In this illuminating episode of Parallax, Dr Ankur Kalra engages with Dr Jonathan Drezner, Director of Sports Cardiology at the University of Washington, who explores the complex world of cardiovascular risk in competitive athletes. Dr Drezner traces the evolution of sports cardiology from watershed moments involving high-profile athletes like Hank Gathers and Reggie Lewis to today's sophisticated screening protocols. The conversation reveals startling statistics about sudden cardiac death—particularly among specific athlete populations where risks are significantly higher than previously thought. The discussion delves into the limitations of traditional screening questionnaires versus the enhanced detection capabilities of ECG testing, highlighting how proper interpretation has dramatically reduced false positives. Dr Drezner articulates the shift from universal disqualification to personalized risk assessment for athletes with cardiac conditions, emphasizing the critical elements of effective emergency action plans that can mean the difference between life and death on the playing field. Listeners will gain valuable insights into both common and rare cardiac conditions affecting athletes, from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy to anomalous coronary arteries, while understanding the three pillars of modern sports cardiology: epidemiology, screening, and management. This episode offers essential knowledge for cardiologists, sports medicine physicians, and other healthcare professionals involved in athlete cardiac care. Questions and comments can be sent to “podcast@radcliffe-group.com” and may be answered by Ankur in the next episode. EPISODE 105: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Taliban Caucus lights the Republican Party and the House of Representatives on fire, while on his first day, the New Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries perfectly whips his members to do literally do nothing more than bring their popcorn and watch everybody from Gaetz to McCarthy burn, baby, burn. It was a beautiful thing, and it left the full range of fascists from Tucker Carlson to Rep. Byron Donalds having to cobble together the nonsensical sophistry that their self-defenestration was actually democracy in action. If Jeffries can manage to keep the Democrats from reverting to their natural desire to do ill-timed good on behalf of the institution rather than let the Republicans shoot themselves again today, he will have won the 118th Congress no matter which Liz Truss the GOP eventually settles on in place of the wounded McCarthy. B-Block (15:15) SPECIAL COMMENT No. 2: There is the tragedy of Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills, and then there is the disgusting reality that the National Football League is now trying to gaslight us. OF COURSE the league intended to resume Monday night's game even after the stricken player fell. And now the NFL has lied about it and sleazily blamed Joe Buck, Suzy Kolber and all of ESPN, to cover up its own insensitivity and callousness. This is, of course, the history of the NFL, which did the wrong thing after JFK was assassinated, and after Mayor George Moscone and Councilman Harvey Milk were assassinated hours before a Monday Night Football game in San Francisco, and after it was told flights could not be guaranteed to get its players and media to games the weekend after 9/11. But this lie makes the Hamlin nightmare even worse - as does the rank exploitation of it by the anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, who spit on the memories of Chuck Hughes and J.V. Cain and Hank Gathers and so many athletes who died on the field, from cardiac distress. (30:54) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Trump and Michael Flynn are no match for Congressman-Elect George Santos. C-Block (36:09) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In 1973, Charles Crawford was interviewing me for his TV news story from one of the earliest baseball card shows. In 1983, he was sitting next to me on the anchor desk at CNN. He introduced himself and I said "we've met before." His reaction when I told him how and when is worth your time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We surf waves, climb mountains, and dive into odorous media mixed zones with Elliott Almond. He has earned a reputation as one of the top Olympic writers and sports investigative reporters during his adventurous career of nearly 50 years. Elliott explains how Edwin Moses led him to break a major story about steroids before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games. He recalls the bunker mentality needed to report on the tragic death of Hank Gathers. Why did Marion Jones talk to Elliott after a failed relay despite despising him? Hear about the craziness of writing about figure skating on deadline, how surfing with quarterback Todd Marinovich led to Elliott taking the Wonderlic test, and how climber Alex Honnold paused to provide a unique perspective. And there's the time a Secret Service agent pointed a gun at Elliott when he was chasing Richard Nixon . . . For nearly 50 years, Almond has been a sports journalist on the West Coast, noted for his enterprise work and Olympic coverage at the Los Angeles Times (1974-1996), the Seattle Times (1996-98), and the San Jose Mercury News (1998-2021). He has been recognized by such organizations as the Associated Press Sports Editors, Best American Sports Writing, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and the Society of Professional Journalists. Elliott has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times. He is currently an outdoor columnist for the Cascadia Daily News in the Pacific Northwest.   Elliott covered 14 Summer and Winter Olympics, as well as the 1999 and 2007 Pan American Games. His investigative work includes reporting on the BALCO drug scandal, steroids in international track and field, Gathers' death, Magic Johnson and the issue of HIV, and cheating in college sports at Washington, USC, UCLA, and UNLV. He wrote about such diverse subjects as the Tour de France, social issues in sports such as abuse in women's sports, crime in college and professional sports, and concussions and the consequences of traumatic brain injuries.   A life-long surfer, Almond spent much of his youth traveling the Southern California and Baja California coastlines. He is the author of the book “Surfing: Mastering Waves from Basic to Intermediate.”   From 2009-13, Elliott was an instructor for San Jose State University, where he served as an editor overseeing the production of a broadsheet newspaper by teenagers participating in a high school journalism workshop.   Elliott graduated from California State-Fullerton in 1975 with bachelor's degrees in communications and political science. For Episode 19 of the Underdogs Podcast, we sat down with and interviewed the 4th overall pick of the 2001 NBA Draft, Eddy Curry. Eddy Curry was quickly labeled "a bust" by many fans, who didn't know the full story. In a short time span, Eddy went through more hard times than most people do in an entire lifetime, and he prevailed. This is a story of overcoming adversities to succeed. Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Eddy spent most of his early years wanting to be a gymnast. In the 7th grade, Eddy picked up a basketball for the first time and very quickly found success. He was very quickly introduced to the AAU circuits and skyrocketed up the scouting boards. After dominating high school basketball, he was invited to numerous high-end basketball camps, which he credits with bringing his name into the mix. With only 6 years of basketball experience, Eddy entered the draft straight out of high school knowing he'd be a top 5 pick. He ends up being drafted by his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls, with the 4th pick in the infamous "Kwame Brown" draft. After a slow rookie year due to a lot of positional competition, he bursts out in his second year, leading the NBA in field goal percentage. He became the first Bull since Michael Jordan to lead the NBA in a major statistical category. We then fast forward to the 2004-05 NBA Season. Eddy starts noticing an irregular heartbeat. He reports this to the team doctors, which lead to him being hospitalized. With Doctors worried he may have the same heart issue that lead to Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers' deaths, the Bulls bench him. The Bulls offer him $400K a year for the rest of his life if he would agree to take a DNA test to see if he was predisposed to heart issues. After talking with his agent, he declines, since a positive test would instantly end his career. (We chose not to discuss this next chapter of Eddy's life during the podcast out of respect, but we want you to be well informed.) While dealing with these heart issues, Eddy's family is robbed at gunpoint. In a separate instance, Eddy's ex-girlfriend and newborn daughter are murdered in front of his son's eyes. Doctors are worried that Eddy's heart may be too large, so they tell him to sit out and not exercise so his heart can shrink down to normal size. This is where he gained that weight that fans so often ridiculed him for. We discuss the mental approach he had the be able to continue on while dealing with all of these things. It's extremely incredible that he was able to deal with these things while being a professional athlete in the public eye. On a lighter note, Eddy also tells us some never before heard stories about Jay-Z and Fat Joe during his time in New York with the Knicks. Put some respect on his name. Sometimes coaches dream up the best basketball schemes in the most unlikely locations, like when Steve Kerr and Bruce Fraser plotted out the Golden State Warriors' motion-driven system at an airport wine bar. In the case of Paul Westhead's speed game - a devastating combo of continual fast break offense and pressing defense - it all came together when he coached Puerto Rico players during summers off from his main role at LaSalle University in the 70s. Westhead was later named head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after his friend Jack McKinney fell off his bike and sustained a TBI. After making some inspired adjustments following Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Finals injury, Westhead guided the Lakers to the NBA title in six games against Dr. J's Sixers, with Magic Johnson winning MVP in his rookie season. Westhead went on to perfect his “shoot in 5 seconds or less” approach - aka “The System”  at Loyola Marymount University, where the duo of Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble hung 122 points per game on their opponents. In this episode, Paul shares: How his college coach Dr. Jack Ramsay helped him get into coachingWhy he played Magic at center in the Finals How Puerto Rico basketball and Old Dominion coach Sonny Allen shaped The SystemWhy he's always promised to blow his new team's socks offWhat legacy Hank Gathers left and why he still remembers the free throw Bo Kimble took in his honorLearn more about Paul's basketball journey in his book Speed Game: My Fast Times in Basketball and follow him on Twitter.

The Chronicles of Jeff Fryer is now available at https://www.theshadowspodcast.com/ March 4, 1990, the Loyola Marymount men's basketball team was competing in the WCC Conference Tournament and preparing for their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Hank Gathers connected on a thunderous alley-oop. Thirteen seconds later, he collapsed and was later pronounced dead at the age of 23. Jeff Fryer was a starting guard on that Loyola Marymount team. Twelve days later that team had to come together and would go on to capture the hearts of the nation in one of the most memorable runs in the history of the NCAA Tournament, playing in honor of their fallen teammate. Jeff also talks about his upbringing, being recruited by the legendary Paul Westhead, his career at Loyola Marymount, the 1990 NCAA Tournament, his professional basketball career, and stories about Hank Gathers. What better way to start off our list of guests for season 2 than this one?! We got a piece of basketball history and hoops nostalgia in the house today. Jeff Fryer joins us to share his basketball journey and we are blessed to have him.Loyola Marymount University brought so much excitement to the college hoops scene from 1986-1990. Jeff Fryer was a huge part their success playing alongside Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers in that legendary, fast-paced offense of Paul Westhead where they put up an NCAA record of 122.4 points per game. Fryer could light it up in hurry. In fact, he still holds the NCAA tournament record for most 3-point field goals in a game (11) against the defending champ Michigan Wolverines. He is also the former NCAA All-Time career leader in 3-point field goals made (363). Any basketball junkie remembers his playing days at LMU, but we also got to learn about the draft process, playing overseas, coaching, remembering Hank Gathers, and the important role that his faith has played up to this point.BIG thanks to Jeff Fryer. We are so honored to have this opportunity to pick his brain, hear his story, and learn more about this college team that had one of the most impressive and emotional tournament runs of all time. Faith can take you far in life and we love to see that it has continued to take Jeff down a path where he can give back. A long time athlete, Gelber examines several athletes through the prism of the “Cobra Effect, ”a phenomenon that occurs when an attempted solution to a problem results in an unintended consequence. And sometimes, that solution might even make the original problem worse. Drawing on his vast medical background, Gelber looks at athletes such as Len Bias, Hank Gathers, Magic Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Lyle Alzado and more. And, of course, Tiger Woods and Tommy John. The situation of every athlete Gelber examines, he asserts, usually has two effects: the obvious one, and a secondary outcome that was unexpected. The flawed evangelism of Alzado, who used steroids and later had brain cancer, or the death of Bias, which resulted in a change in drug laws in the United States, are two pieces of a fascinating narrative that is certain to provoke more discussion about athletes, sports and society. Gelber is an orthopedic surgeon with the Olmstead Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota. Paul Westhead (@CoachWesthead), the only Head Coach to win both a NBA Title (Los Angeles Lakers, 1980) and WNBA Title (Phoenix Mercury, 2007) joins us for a wide-ranging conversation that covers his incredible basketball career. Westhead invented “The System”, which has led to record-breaking scoring including his 1989-90 Loyola Marymount team setting an all-time single season scoring record of 122 points per game. Westhead shares incredible stories from coaching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Diana Taurasi, Bo Kimble and the late Hank Gathers. He also reflects on his Philadelphia upbringing (where he attended St. Joseph’s University and coached at Lasalle University), the hotbed of Philly coaches (Jack Ramsey, Jack McKinney, Jim Lynam, Matt Guokas and Westhead) and winning the 1980 NBA Championship with the Lakers in his hometown of Philadelphia against the 76ers. Westhead discusses his time at Loyola Marymount University where he coached the Lions to a Great Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after the tragic death of LMU star Hank Gathers. For old school basketball fans and for those who are interested in the original blueprint for the high scoring NBA offenses that exist today, this conversation is full of stories and incredible insight. Former St. Joseph’s & Binghamton University guard Derrick “D.J.” Rivera joins us to tell his story. He opens up about expectations growing up as the nephew of the late great Hank Gathers. He talks about growing up in the Lawncrest section of Philadelphia. D.J. decides to attend budding powerhouse Neumann High School, where he would have to adjust to his teammates and the environment around him. D.J. would lead Neumann to back to back Catholic League Championships. He would go on to attend St Joseph’s University. At St. Joes he would face issues over playing time, which would eventually spill over into his off the court life. After an up and down two year stretch at St. Joes, D.J. would decide to transfer to Binghamton University. At Binghamton he would join one of his close friends, fellow Philadelphia hooper Malik Alvin. D.J. would explode from the moment he took the floor at Binghamton, leading the Bearcats to a conference title and a NCAA Tournament berth. Despite leading the conference in scoring (20ppg), he wouldn’t receive any votes for conference player of the year. D.J. opens up about the issues that led to his dismissal from Binghamton, and his subsequent transfer to Montevallo University. Once again D.J. would shine as he usually does once he touches the floor, leading his team to D-II National Championship and earning All American honors. After college he would embark on his pro career overseas. D.J. drops gems about his family life and why he represents “Can’t Be Denied”. Poway Councilman Dave Grosch joined me Friday afternoon October 12th for a conversation about important Poway issues, his family history in Poway and a little bit about the MLB playoffs and college sports.  Dave is well known and takes great pride in being an approachable and available councilperson that will meet with constituents, listen to their concerns, respond to their emails and take their phone calls.  He wants to be responsive to the people of Poway to help them solve problems, represent their concerns and share information about issues involving city council. Councilman Grosch shared his thoughts about the Poway Road Corridor Plan.  He believes the new Outpost project will be a strong showcase of the potential of the redevelopment plan.  Once people start seeing something real, then many concerns and unfounded rumors will lessen.  He did make it clear that property owners still need to gain approval from city council on their plans.  In one specific case, a property owner shared plans for a mixed use development, but it only had 10% commercial and ultimately was rejected by the city council.  Dave is particularly concerned about parking issues.  He sees the overflow parking on Oak Knoll, Community and other streets today.  It is important to him that each new development on Poway Rd has the necessary parking set aside to ensure there is no additional overflow on to side streets that are already impacted. Dave Grosch is also proud of the city's fiscally conservative policies.  Balanced budgets, prioritization of special projects and prudent management of tax dollars are key principles for Councilman Grosch.  But he warned that expenses are increasing at a higher rate than revenues, so new revenue sources will be necessary.  Because many long time residents choose to remain in their homes and retire in Poway, there is less turnover of homes and thus the property tax base grows very slowly.  Part of the reason for the Poway Rd Corridor Plan is the opportunity to generate more sales tax and property tax revenue which will allow the city to continue to fund the growing needs of public safety, parks, infrastructure and more. Dave Grosch did speak to the issue of term limits.  This was an issue he felt passionately about when he first ran for office in 2010.  However, he realized it took him time to come up to speed as a councilman to understand the city staff and how processes worked.  He also felt he had unfinished business to address (Community/Senior Center, Espola project, getting Poway Rd Corridor project started, etc.).  After consultation with his supporters he decided to run for a 3rd 4-year term. We covered many other issues including Stoneridge, synchronizing street lights, expanding the left turn lane at Pomerado and Poway Rd, Poway Girls Softball, Poway National Little League, SAIC, TRW, raising a family in Poway, losing 8 pounds walking neighborhoods meeting with voters, Potato Chip Rock, Starridge Park, Silverset Park, Poway Road traffic, big rocks underground in Poway, the big dig at the Outpost, Loyola Marymount, Hank Gathers, Bo Kimble, Torrance, the huge Mira Mesa apartment complex off the 15 freeway, the new Poway Community Center/Senior Center, cleaning up the eucalyptus trees on Twin Peaks Rd, LMDs (Landscape Maintenance Districts), Torrey Powers, John Carson, Phil Spear (RIP), VFW, Kiwanis, water rates, taking an hour to get a gallon of milk at the grocery store because he talks freely with constituents, figuring out the weird TV channels for Aztec football and basketball, Padres constant rebuilding mode, Rocky Long, a possible Brewer/Astros World Series and his inaccurate prediction that this evening's Aztec/Air Force game wouldn't be played in a rain storm. Rives is back trying to come to grips with no upsets, drama and all of the excitement of March. And he’s got two special guests to help him. First, Brian Edwards of Vegas Insider and MajorWager.com is back, even though there are no games. T.J. and Brian discuss who might have been a very attractive potential title Underdog in this year’s “Big Dance.” Also, they reminisce about the exciting and dramatic 1990 64 team tourney that saw the heart warming story of Loyola Marymount overcoming the death of teammate Hank Gathers to pull three shockers before being beaten by eventual champ UNLV. And numerous crazy last second finishes. Brian also has some thoughts on what NFL Free Agency means for some of the teams Super Bowl odds for the upcoming 2020 season.
