How many messages can Apache Kafka® process per second? At Honeycomb, it's easily over one million messages. In this episode, get a taste of how Honeycomb uses Kafka on massive scale. Liz Fong-Jones (Principal Developer Advocate, Honeycomb) explains how Honeycomb manages Kafka-based telemetry ingestion pipelines and scales Kafka clusters. And what is Honeycomb? Honeycomb is an observability platform that helps you visualize, analyze, and improve cloud application quality and performance. Their data volume has grown by a factor of 10 throughout the pandemic, while the total cost of ownership has only gone up by 20%. But how, you ask? As a developer advocate for site reliability engineering (SRE) and observability, Liz works alongside the platform engineering team on optimizing infrastructure for reliability and cost. Two years ago, the team was facing the prospect of growing from 20 Kafka brokers to 200 Kafka brokers as data volume increased. The challenge was to scale and shuffle data between the number of brokers while maintaining cost efficiency. The Honeycomb engineering team has experimented with using sc1 or st1 EBS hard disks to store the majority of longer-term archives and keep only the latest hours of data on NVMe instance storage. However, this approach to cost reduction was not ideal, which resulted in needing to keep data that is older than 24 hours on SSD. The team began to explore and adopt Zstandard compression to decrease bandwidth and disk size; however, the clusters were still struggling to keep up. When Confluent Platform 6.0 rolled out Tiered Storage, the team saw it as a feature to help them break away from being storage bound. Before bringing the feature into production, the team did a proof of concept, which helped them gain confidence as they watched Kafka tolerate broker death and reduce latencies in fetching historical data. Tiered Storage now shrinks their clusters significantly so that they can hold on to local NVMe SSD and the tiered data is only stored once on Amazon S3, rather than consuming SSD on all replicas. In combination with the AWS Im4gn instance, Tiered Storage allows the team to scale for long-term growth. Honeycomb also saved 87% on the cost per megabyte of Kafka throughput by optimizing their Kafka clusters.EPISODE LINKSTiered StorageIntroducing Confluent Platform 6.0Scaling Kafka at HoneycombWatch the video version of this podcastJoin the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Intro to Event-Driven Microservices with ConfluentUse PODCAST100 to get an additional $100 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)

The atom consists of a nucleus, containing neutrons and protons, and electrons revolving around it. The smallest components of the atom are two types of quarks, and the electrons. All the matter in the universe, all odors, all tastes, all colors, hardness, softness and everything else is created out of these three tiny components. Electrons are extraordinarily minute compared to the nucleus. An electron is just one 2000th of the protons that make up the nucleus. If we put a dot on a piece of paper and take this as the nucleus of the atom, the electron revolving around it would be 50 meters away. If we think of the nucleus as an apple, the electron orbiting it would be 50 kilometers away. It would be impossible for a human being standing there to see the electron. No blow, impact or explosion that could take place in this world can displace either the atom, the nucleus or the electrons. Even when a living thing made up of atoms dies, the atoms that constitute it will keep on turning. The atoms that constitute a burning tree do not burn up and cease to exist with it; they continue revolving in the air and combine with different atoms to produce new substances. The nucleus inside the atom is constantly revolving. Electrons revolve both around the nucleus, and around their own axes. The quarks inside the nucleus also revolve endlessly in the same way. Each one revolves at a specific speed. They never make a mistake and never impair the order set out for them. The electron revolves both around its own axis and around the nucleus at an extraordinary speed ranging from 2000 to 100,000 kilometers PER SECOND. Not a single electron has ever collided with another electron throughout the 15 billion years since they were first created. No such collision could ever happen. Electrons revolve around the nucleus in seven different orbits, and the number of electrons circling the nucleus may sometimes exceed 100. Electrons jump into one another's orbits and change places at a very high rate of speed. But despite their stupendous speeds and movements they still never collide with one another. Electron exchanges between two atoms takes place with a very low energy. This is a great blessing to us in terms of the continuation of life, as this is one of the reasons behind the existence of everything, from the cells in our bodies to the objects we use, from the stars in the skies to the Earth itself. In a single moment, there is as much electrical transmission in our brains as the number of stars in an average-size galaxy. This electrical transmission is made possible by electrons. Electrons also revolve around their own axes. This is known as “spin”. Were it not for that, all electrons would combine in a single orbit, no electron exchange would ever take place, and matter could never form. While we think we are sitting quietly at home, the Earth is revolving around its own axis at 500 meters per second . And we are revolving with it. The Earth revolves around the Sun at 30 kilometers per second. And we again revolve with it. The Solar System revolves within the Milky Way at a speed of 250 kilometers per second. And we revolve with it. And every one of the atoms in our bodies, all around us and where we live also constantly revolve. Everything, from giant galaxies down to the tiniest quark, is under the knowledge and control of Almighty Allah, Creator and Lord of all the worlds. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. He knows what you are engaged upon. On the Day when they are returned to Him, He will inform them of what they did. Allah has knowledge of all things. (Surat an-Nur, 64)

I love Makato Shinkai. But like every person who ever saw 5 centimetres per second, I hated him when the movie ended because of its morose and depressing theme. The shock of such a realistically sad film from such an unexpected source has probably made many hate the film. This podcast is in contrast in support of this great film. I believe that the film is an excellent example of how films should be. Here is my attempt to defend morose artworks through the example of 5 Centimetres per Second. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adwitiya-dixit/message

According to the Northwestern website, a spacecraft leaving earth needs a speed of 7 miles per second or about 25,000 miles an hour to leave earth's atmosphere without falling back. I formed the habit of using metaphors and hyperbolic language to convey ideas in business. Early in my career, while leading and managing sales teams I intended to make things easy to understand and relatable. I started in sales so I suppose I did it because I sat through too many "sales meetings" where technical details, product details, and all the other dry, boring stuff was presented with all the panache of a cardboard box. When the Eagle landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, I was 12. Maybe that had something to do with it. Business success, I learned, relied on having a successful launch (take off). But what does that mean? Well, it means you don't crash. And in order to avoid crashing, you have to keep flying. If you're flying high, like a spacecraft, then you have to get to orbit where you can safely fly without fear of crashing. That means you have to escape gravity. Technically, it's escape velocity - the speed required to get beyond the earth's atmosphere. Thanks to the brainiac physicists and other scientists we know the speed required - 7 miles per second. Similar comparisons have been made to other forms of flight. Like regular planes. In business, we often talk about runways. Planes need runways. The bigger the plane, the longer the required runway. The visual is easy for anybody to understand. If a big plane is going to achieve lift-off, it needs a longer runway than some little lightweight single-engine plane. A business enterprise needs runway - cash and capital - to get lift-off. It's all about getting a lift. Going higher. Getting up in the air. Getting off the ground. But we're not talking about business. We're talking about leaning toward wisdom. We're thinking about our lives, which very well may include business and careers, but it's more than that. It's the total thing - every aspect of our lives. The complete person that is who we are. And perhaps more importantly, the complete person that is who we want to become. Our ideal self. We're all trying to escape something. "I won't feel sorry for myself," said Elizabeth the character in Poldark, an Amazon Prime TV series about who lost everything including house and status. It's a powerful declaration of a character determined to escape the misfortune that had befallen her. "We'll find economy and rebuild." Without knowing the end of the story, we believe her because she seems determined to build enough momentum to escape her present reality. She's headed toward escape velocity. History teaches valuable lessons. Recently I revisited the 13 subjects crafted by Benjamin Franklin. He created a list of 13 things he wanted to work on to escape his status quo and go to new heights of achievement. Franklin formed the list while he was a printer in Philadelphia swimming in debt. His idea was simple but brilliant. He'd devote one full week to each subject. After 13 weeks he'd start over again. By the end of a full year, he would have spent four full weeks on each item. Little doubt Franklin thought by concentrating on these things he'd be able to escape the mediocrity and failure of his current life. Here’s what Franklin wrote about these 13 subjects…and in this order: Temperance – Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation Silence – Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation Order – Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time Resolution – resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve Frugality – Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e. waste nothing Industry – Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions Sincerity – Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly,

Epicenter - Learn about Blockchain, Ethereum, Bitcoin and Distributed Technologies
One of the key innovations of Bitcoin is the ability to easily implement payment channels. A number of use cases have been discussed or demonstrated, among which is the idea of pay-per-use. This is particularly useful when charging for things like WiFi or streaming video by the second. With this in mind, one could imagine a line of communication between two peers, where data flows in one direction and payments flow in the other. This is the idea behind Streamium, a free and open-source service which allows content creators to stream live video directly to viewers, and get paid instantly. We’re joined by Manuel Aráoz and , the two brilliant software engineers from Argentina who created Streamium. They have worked together on numerous Bitcoin projects these past few years, including ProofOfExistence.com, Faradam, Decentraland, RelayStore, and actively contributed to the BitCore javascript library. Topics covered in this episode: The current state of Bitcoin in Argentina The general idea behind Streamium, how it works and its technical components How payment channels are implemented in Streamium and its various use cases The Faradam project The prospect of alternative content funding models made possible by Bitcoin micropayments Proof-of-existence and what innovations blockchain technologies brings to data notarization The Decentraland project and the vision for a blockchain-based virtual reality Episode links: Streamium Faradam Decentraland Proof of Existence The Mental Accounting Barrier to Micropayments by Nick Szabo Manuel Aráoz's About.me profile Esteban Ordano's personal website This episode is hosted by Meher Roy and Sébastien Couture.
