(This newsletter is sponsored by me, alerting you about the three mobile photography video courses I have available: beginning iPhone, iPhone 16 and Google Pixel. http://www.jeffersongraham.com/courses)You gotta love a photography application that calls itself the “Anti-AI” app. Halide has my name written all over it. The app has actually been around for several years, since 2017, but recently added a new feature called “Process Zero,” which lets us photograph things the way we actually see them, as opposed to how we'd like to remember the world. That means no fake blue skies, no artificially enhanced colors, no over-sharpened images. The app, which costs $19.99 yearly or $2.99 monthly, produces “zero computational photography to produce natural, film-like photos,” Halide says. Yay! (Sorry Galaxy and Pixel fans—Halide is only available for the iPhone and iPad.)Top, iPhone 16 Pro Apple fake blue sky, over sharpened. The bottom shot, again on the iPhone 16 Pro, is with the Halide app. All the photos shown here are unedited. My beef on the AI revolution is that it's great for looking up things, transcribing interviews, getting cars to drive automatically and for photo editing—but not for photo taking. I've written about how Google has taken a step towards ruining photography as we know it with the new Pixel 9 series of photos that offers features to add people to the photo, and do things that just aren't there. Google's “Add Me,” lets you take a photo of say, the two of you, and add a third person to the image after the fact, while the really controversial one is called Remagine, which turns ordinary photos into unlabeled generative AI artwork. Yuck. Apple has made a big deal of new AI features coming to the iPhone, but luckily they don't include altering major reality as part of the deal. However, what Apple, Samsung and Google have done is to take a basic camera and turn it into something that never produces an image that's out of focus, rarely too dark or light, with computational skills. The phone cameras take 9 images every time you click the shutter and merges them into one master photo with few flaws. As the Verge noted in an iPhone review about Halide: “If you're one of the many people who think that iPhone photos look overprocessed lately, then this is the feature for you.”The New Yorker, of all places, did a feature on Halide this week that you should check out. When's the last time the New Yorker did a piece on an app? Just wondering. “Process Zero has made me enjoy taking photos with my phone again, because I don't feel like I'm constantly fighting against algorithmic editing that I can't control or predict,” writes the author Kyle Chayka in the New Yorker. Halide notes that turning off the auto features has tradeoffs. It admits that it can't handle low light well and cannot access some features of the iPhone, notably the 2x zoom feature that crops a portion of the 48 megapixel sensor to “zoom” in and get closer. Top, iPhone, with enhanced orange and flag, bottom shot is with Halide. I've included here many examples of Apple vs. Halide, so you can see for yourself. You may prefer the Apple approach, which has its place—in many of these shots, the extra color is nice to have, but as a rule, I'd rather have the option to add those looks myself in editing afterwards, and have a cleaner image to play with. Top: Apple Photos shot, bottom via the Halide app. You can see how the colors are actually crisper in the Halide photo, minus the fake darkened sky. If you have the new iPhone 16, you might have heard about the “Camera Control” button on the side of the phone which lets you click to open the camera, without having to use FaceID. The button can be programmed to make Halide the default camera. Meanwhile, let me tell you more about the Halide app. It's incredibly simple. At the top of the screen you click the drop-down menu to select “Process Zero” or “Apple Processed” photos. Another tool lets you select Auto or Manual exposure, which you can tweak by pressing down on the screen and making the image lighter or darker. At the bottom of the app, you choose which lens you want to use, .5, 1x or 5x, the ability to use the Portrait Mode to blur the background and selfie mode. Hidden after a swipe is the flash, timer, white balance and settings, where you can choose to photograph in the traditional JPG, the HEIC smaller file, or larger RAW. Again, you may prefer the auto features, and that's fine, but if you want to go back to the days where a photo was a photo, without enhancement that can't be tweaked, you should check out Halide. NewsbytesInstafamous: If you want to be seen on Instagram, but don't feel like making a highly produced short Reels video, Instagram announced this week that Carousels and photos with music now can show up in the Reels tab too, which it favors over basic photo posts. Get busy creators!Amazon Stinks: When the company announced that it was adding adverts to its Prime Video offerings, unless we paid a fee, it said it would offer limited ads and not be obnoxious. Well, that didn't last very long. This week Amazon said it will start increasing the ad load in the coming year. Surprise, surprise!Speaking of AI editing: Software giant Adobe announced several new photo editing tools at its MAX conference in Miami, including the ability generate seconds of video footage from a text prompt in its Premiere Pro video editing program, and new tools for Lightroom Mobile. Here you can automatically apply effects for retouching backgrounds, teeth, eyes, skin, and more.Let's go to Japan! On tonight's episode of Photowalks on Scripps, we visit the Kansai region of Japan, including stops to Japan's “Kitchen” of Osaka, the street food capital of the country, and the lively port city of Kobe. The show airs at 8 p.m. ET on Scripps News. Mobile Photography on FlipboardI have a long-standing relationship with the digital social magazine Flipboard, one of the great apps for getting a curated look at things of interest. I'm currently the photographer in residence there for the fall—and the great Mia Q just posted a nice interview with me on Flipboard that you might enjoy!Record Store DaysI got such great response to last Sunday's bonus edition, talking about my days working as a clerk at a used record store in Berkeley at age 20, and all the important life lessons I learned at that time. But I broke the format of this newsletter, with nothing about tech, travel or photography in the story. Should I continue with my tale, I asked readers. “I'm loving learning the back story,” commented Josh. “I love reading about your adventures,” said Brian. “More, more, more Jeff” requested Jolene. Thank you! So by popular demand, I have part 3 of my personal history all cued up and ready for you in tomorrow's edition. Thanks so much for the interest! And as always, thanks again for taking the time to read, watch and listen!Jeff Get full access to Jefferson Graham's PhotowalksTV newsletter - Tech & Travel at www.photowalkstv.com/subscribe

Meet HMD Skyline: Designed for Creation Human Mobile Devices is putting the 'human' back into phone design with its new smartphone: HMD Skyline. With a 108MP hybrid OIS triple rear camera with capture fusion and a 50MP selfie camera with eye-tracking autofocus, your shots are about to take off. Setting a new standard in stunning smartphone repairable design, HMD Skyline strips back to design brilliance with Gen2 repairability for even easier repairs at your friendly service centre. Human Mobile Devices introduces Detox Mode on HMD Skyline, a feature available from August that's designed to help users when they want to step away from that always-on feeling by deactivating a bespoke selection of apps or contacts. Celebrity photographer Rosanna Elettra, test drives HMD Skyline, and the results are stunning. Human Mobile Devices proves once again that great design doesn't have to cost a lot Tech innovator, Human Mobile Devices (HMD), spearheaded the dumbphone trend by reimagining feature phone classics for the modern day as consumers sought to limit their screen time for their own mental wellbeing. The European phone manufacturer then called time on hard-to-maintain and fix technology by introducing smartphones that can easily be repaired. Now, the tech disruptor brings you the affordable HMD Skyline, which marries detox and repairability as well as a camera packed full of tricks - including a 108MP hybrid OIS triple rear camera. With the all-new Capture Fusion, 4 x Zoom and Portrait Mode for stunning 50mm shots with natural bokeh effect. Detox Mode is available from August and brings a dumbphone function to a smartphone - it is designed to help users when they want to step away from that always on feeling by deactivating a bespoke selection of apps or contacts. HMD Skyline also debuts a new era for smartphone design called Gen2 Repairability; your friendly service centre can simply pop off the back cover, remove some screws, and get that screen replaced nice and quickly. In testament to its super-powerful photo capabilities, Human Mobile Devices has turned to Gen Z superstar snapper Rosanna Elettra to test drive the new HMD Skyline, capturing ten striking images shot and edited entirely on HMD Skyline following a group of Gen Z fashionistas on a night out. Celebrity photographer Rosanna Elettra took the HMD Skyline for a test drive, she commented: "I've had the joy of capturing acclaimed artists like Rhianna, Central Lee, Aitch and Cara Delevingne. HMD Skyline is Gen Z's dream device, so I wanted to show the phone in its natural habitat, in scenes dripping in Gen Z culture. I'm used to shooting celebrities, but I loved turning the camera on Human Mobile Device's latest launch and taking its super impressive camera for a test drive. The shots - all taken on the phone - are super cool, stylish and have main character energy - just like Skyline." Lars Silberbauer, Global CMO of Human Mobile Devices, said; "Human Mobile Devices is human by design…and that's what we've done with HMD Skyline, put consumers first. There are so many great functions on this phone to call out. The camera is a creator's dream, a step-changing detox mode too. And it looks absolutely beautiful." Celebrity photographer, Rosanna Elettra, said: "HMD Skyline is Gen Z's dream device, so I wanted to show the phone in its natural habitat, in scenes dripping in Gen Z culture. I'm used to shooting celebrities, but I loved turning the camera on Human Mobile Device's latest launch and taking its super impressive camera for a test drive. The shots - all taken on the phone - are super cool, stylish and have main character energy - just like Skyline." Your shots are about to take off: snap, selfie-check, and socialise (in ultrawide) Skyline has been built with a progressive GenZ audience firmly in mind so the camera capabilities are stand-out and seemingly endless. The 50MP front camera comes with autofocus and eye-tracking to ensure the sharpest of selfies, and with Sk...

Series: King & Countries (week 4)Scripture: Matthew 11 (Main)Title: “How to Overcome Fears, Doubts & Burdens” (Darien Gabriel)Bottom line: Jesus tells us to overcome fears, doubts and burdens by trusting Jesus as promised Messiah, authoritative judge, sovereign son, and gracious master.Discussion questions for group and personal study. 1. How has doubt been a struggle in your own relationship with God? What truths from God's Word were the most difficult to believe in the midst of your doubts?2. How can difficulties, disappointments, and suffering feed into our doubts? How did this play out in the life of John the Baptist?3. Why is it futile to fight doubt apart from the foundation of God's Word?4. How is joyful submission to Jesus an antidote to doubt? Explain.5. Many Christians wish they had lived in the time when Scriptures were recorded. How does this passage correct such a notion?6. How might the expectation of opposition and criticism from the world help you persevere in the faith? What is the danger to your faith of not expecting trials?7. How does Jesus' role as your authoritative Judge affect how you relate to Him? How might it affect your approach to sharing the gospel with others?8. Jesus is presented as the sovereign Son in Matthew 11. How does this portrait of Jesus correct our culture's understanding of Him? How about your own?9. In your own words, explain why Matthew 11:28-30 speaks against the idea of works-righteousness. How does it speak to the notion that the Christian life is burdensome?10. How would you respond to the following questions: "What is my role and responsibility in responding to the gospel? What is God's role in this process?"Final Questions (optional or in place of above)What is God saying to you right now? What are you going to do about it?Find our sermons, podcasts, discussion questions and notes at https://www.gracetoday.net/podcastIntroMy phone takes great pictures. It has this one mode called Portrait Mode. This mode digitally adjusts the photo settings so that the main subject in the picture (usually a person) is brought into sharp focus while the background is slightly blurred creating a sense of depth to the photo. As a result, the main subject stands out as the most important part of the photo. Hence, it is called a portrait. In today's message, we're going to look at four portraits of Jesus Christ. These portraits are there to help us overcome our fears, doubts and burdens in life. They are there to help us remember that he's trustworthy no matter how life feels or is going.Bottom line: Jesus tells us to overcome fears, doubts and burdens by trusting Jesus as promised Messiah, authoritative judge, sovereign son, and gracious master.Q. What do I want you to know? A. 4 portraits of Christ given in ch. 11Q. Why? A. Because they lead us to overcome our fears, doubts and burdens by trusting fully in Jesus Christ.Q. What do I want you to do? A. Exchange your fears, doubts, and burdens for abundant life in Christ Jesus.Q. Why? A. Because I don't want you to flounder in fear, doubt and burdened over your sin.Q. How? A. Four parts:Repent of your sins.Rest in Christ alone.Renounce yourself.Rejoice forever in Christ.FOUR PORTRAITS OF JESUS (David Platt)I. The promised messiah.A. John doubts JesusB. Anatomy of doubt (Platt) Doubt often arisesDuring difficult situationsAccompanying unmet expectationsLimited perceptionC. Answer to doubtBiblical revelationJoyful submissionD. Jesus defends JohnJohn was the greatest prophet. We have a greater privilege.E. Like Jesus and JohnWe will be opposed by this world. We will be criticized by this world. Jesus alone KNOWS the Father.B. Jesus alone REVEALS the Father. We respond Not with un-repentance and indifference, but Through human faith.IV. The gracious master.A. An explanation of ChristianityWe give all we have to Jesus. “To begin with, (come to Jesus) means we give all we have to Jesus. The imagery in this passage is of a ‘yoke' (v. 29), a heavy wooden bar that fits over the neck of an ox so that it can pull a cart or a plow. The yoke could be put on one animal or it could be shared between two animals. In a shared yoke, one of the oxen would often be much stronger (and experienced) than the other. The stronger ox was more schooled in the commands of the master, and so it would guide the other according to the master's commands. By coming into the yoke with the stronger ox, the weaker ox could learn to obey the master's voice.”The people were burdened by the law of the OT and the man made laws pilled on top of them by the priests and rabbi's. But they didn't provide relief through the forgiveness of sins. So the people were burdened by their sins. They couldn't find relief. Jesus calls us to give him the full weight of our sins so that he can fully pardon us and lift off that burden that wearies us.We give him our sins.We give him our inability to obey the commands.Jesus gives all He has to us. He gives us his full pardon. He gives us rest and peace with God.He gives us the ability to obey his commands completely and immediately.B. The invitation (Command, Call) of Christ: When faith is hard and the burden is heavyRepent of sinRenounce yourselfRest in ChristRejoice forever in himSECTION OUTLINE TEN (MATTHEW 11) Outline Bible, WillmingtonJesus reassures the disciples of John the Baptist, rebukes several cities, rejoices in his Father's wisdom, and reveals that he is the only way to the Father.I. You shot a lovely portrait and realized later that the background could benefit from some artistic blur. It used to be that if you didn't get it in camera, you were stuck. But now it's possible to recreate that blur using AI features in software later. Or, if you captured the shot using the iPhone's Portrait Mode, you can edit the effect whenever you want. Week three of our series on the Trinity. This week, using the metaphor of an iPhone's Portrait Mode, we examine the background and context of the Gospel as that of the Trinity. Then we apply this logic as we 'Trinitarianly' think through the Great Commission in Matthew 28.16--20 Text: Matthew 28.16--20 Teacher: Eric Williams
Running it back this Friday at noon with my guy and top NYC cameraman, Tom Justino. He was my wing man for my first ever Facebook Live and we're at it again this week talking the current state of production, what gear you need & his podcast, Toll Switch. No one has given me better advice when it comes to video, audio & photography than Tom over the years.Tune in for this energetic conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Segment 1Jeremiah is broadcasting this week from his restaurant, Della, in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. Tom gives the advice to not get anything more than what you absolutely need when it comes to equipment. Jeremiah and Tom discuss the new iPhone 13, which does not make many improvements to the photography features introduced in iPhone 12. Even though the photography features on newer iPhone models are excellent, post production is generally still needed for a professional-grade photo. Jeremiah and Tom tend to upgrade their iPhones every two years. They recommend Moment lenses to enhance iPhone photography and discuss whether these lenses will work homogeneously with upgraded Portrait Mode features. Jeremiah asks Tom about any pointers for improving videography. Tom says that audio quality makes all the difference in the world for enhancing video, referencing a scene in Taxi Driver as an example. Always save background noise in case you wish to use it in a finished video mix. Software such as Adobe Premiere Plus can be useful for editing video. Jeremiah and Tom will be back after the break. Segment 2Back from the break, Jeremiah asks for Tom's take on how much the industry has changed since the start of the pandemic. Tom notes that we have been more accepting of lower quality standards than we normally would have pre-pandemic - Zoom audio and video quality, for example. As long as you can give the viewer/listener what they're there for, then that's all that matters. They will forgive the audio/visual hiccups. Jeremiah notes that over the last two weeks in Midtown Manhattan, daily activities are as close to normal as they've been in the last year and a half. It may never fully go back to what it was pre-pandemic, but the volume of people has been much higher. Tom says this transition to the new normal means he needs to navigate the grey area between art and commerce. People and brands are going to want to tell stories together, which provides a lot of opportunities for photography, especially on social media. Tom is going to continue focusing on fine art photography while also finding ways for his photography to tell stories for brands. Social media is a great way to prop up brand stories, whether it's sharing a mission, promoting a pop-up location or directing to a detailed website. Jeremiah mentions Google My Business, which is an effective way to integrate all social content into a singular platform. Tom recommends using message boards and forums on brand websites to further your message. More to come after the break. Segment 3 Jeremiah asks Tom, if a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a video worth? Jeremiah says the hardest thing to maintain when scaling a business is intimacy. Video has the potential to scale intimacy much more effectively than a photo can. Sam agrees that it's easier for a viewer to invest in video/film and that it takes a unique type of person to get lost in a photograph in the same way. Jeremiah asks Sam what strategies he employs for growing his business. Right now Tom says that getting back into things is so new, he focused on putting his fine art out and hoping that it attracts customers interested in working with him. He adds that he has had more time during the day to focus on work since his kid is back to in-person school and afterschool activities. Prior to that he was doing a lot of his writing at night and getting outside to shoot whenever he could. He started working with Fort Hamilton Distillery by meeting up with him on numerous occasions in the Windsor Terrace/Kensington area. Tom remarks that of Jeremiah's restaurant businesses were able to prosper through the pandemic because people tend to turn to food for comfort. Jeremiah and Sam will come back for their final segment after the break. Segment 4After the break, Jeremiah asks Tom about his podcast, Toll Switch. Tom was inspired to create a storytelling studio without constraints, where the stories could be translated to different mediums. From this came Toll Switch, a series of one-act teleplays taking place in New York City in the 50s. It's allowed Sam to tell all of the stories he's wanted to tell. The video companion pieces to the show are filmed in black and white to recall the style of noir films of the era. The show can be found on all major podcast platforms. Tom would like to grow the show by connecting more to the NYC theater world, to utilize the top-tier acting talent. The end goal is to eventually be able to work with a major network. Learn more about Tom at his website JustinoPictures.com and on Instagram at @bullfella. This week's episode is about hope versus reality. We want things to be a certain way. More more often than not, they're something else. We prefer to see some things through rose colored glasses. Other topics include: NFL Sunday, the sad story of Gabby Petito and how social media has clouded our vision of real life, the Canadian election results, more Norm Macdonald memories, what Cinematic Mode on the new iPhone 13 actually looks like, people who use auto-pilot mode on their Tesla the wrong way, the single worst radio voice in the history of radio, why watching Clint Eastwood get old sucks worse than actually getting old, and more anti-vaxxer stories.
In this week's show Dave and I look at rumors that the next iPhone will include Portrait mode for video, similar to the photo feature released a few years ago. Previously, I mentioned a part of my life that I still have nightmares about and I hesitate to even go into it now, but I promised I would tell you some of the stories and I figure it’s best to just get it out of the way. To give it a nice name, I was a bill collector. Some called me The Loan Man and others called me things I can’t say in decent company. So, in episode 23, I’m gonna take you from day one, through some stuff in the middle, and all the way to my take this job and shove it moment - a situation you won’t blame me for, I promise. In fact, you’re gonna wish I’d punched the guy. I’m Michael Blackston and you should know that I’ve tried to forget the days I’m getting ready to tell you about, but I guess I owe you some transparency when it comes to my Funny Messy Life. Sometimes when you hear someone say hindsight is twenty-twenty, it’s a cute little lesson you might have learned, like: I shouldn’t have financed that living room set at 85 percent interest, or; What happens in Vegas doesn’t actually stay there, or: Turn off your body mic when you go number one during a live show. But sometimes it’s a much more serious lesson, like: Turn off your body mic when you go number two during a live show and you ate at Taco Bell earlier, or: Never trust the man in the suit with big teeth who tells you going to work as an “Assistant Manager” at a small loans company is basically the same thing as starting a career as a professional banker and before long, you’ll be a bossy pants, bossing people around in your boss pants and driving the classic 1960s Mustang convertible you’ve always wanted. Because he’s lying. A lot’s changed in the collections industry since the time I was imprisoned there, and from what I hear, it’s all good things. I’m not a fan of political correctness, but like a blind squirrel, sometimes political correctness finds a nut and it being against the law to harass people is one of them. A friend who still works for a company like that recently told me some of the things they used to be able to do that have now been outlawed for the good of humanity, like: - Chasing (which is going out to the home or job of somebody -that owes money and demanding payment), - Being anything other than professional on the phone, - Making repossession threats without going through the proper legal channels, - Calling your friends, neighbors, and loved ones when you refuse to communicate and telling them what a scumbag you are and that you probably kick puppies, punch kittens, and voted for Hillary. These are all good things to make illegal, but they weren’t always. Actually, there was always a rule against telling other people your business - it’s called Third Party Disclosure - but we didn’t adhere to it very much. That was when everybody still had a land line and didn’t have a device in their pocket that had the power to crash the energy grid of a small country and record phone calls at the same time. I feel like the advancements in that kind of technology is probably what’s behind a lot of the rule changes. We’ll go back in time, now to the late nineties, not long after I got married and was looking for any job that would keep the bills paid. When we got married, I was working as a Walmart portrait photographer, blowing bubbles and making mouth noises at toddlers and crazy people. This was still when normal people held actual cameras and if they wanted a professional looking photo, they went to a professional photographer. Everyone didn’t have a device in their pockets that had the power to search and immediately play the national anthem of the small country whose energy grid it just crashed and at the same time take an awesome digital pic of you and your dessert in Portrait Mode. I still loaded film into the Walmart cameras with my hands in a portable darkroom bag. I didn’t exactly hate that job, but I hated that job and when my step-dad got me a position at the motorcycle dealership where he worked, I jumped at the chance to quit taking pictures of snotty children and crazy people to sell motorcycles to snotty bikers and crazy people. Unfortunately, I didn’t so much hate that job as I absolutely despised it and the money I barely made because I don’t know anything at all about motorcycles, nor do I care to learn. Customers would ask, “Do you even know how to ride a motorcycle?” And I’d say, “Nope. Nor do I care to learn.” You can imagine how thrilled I was when I opened the classifieds and saw an ad that said ASST. MANAGER NEEDED! EXCITING NEW CAREER OPPORTUNITY IN BANKING! Have you ever wanted to be a BOSSY PANTS, but have never made it past being a LAZY BRITCHES? Call for an appointment and we’ll make ALL your pants bossing dreams come true! Oh, I called the number and I made that appointment. I put on a tie and the pants I thought would scream BOSSY best and I sat in front of a man I trusted immediately. He seemed sincere as the day is long. His office was nice and plush and I thought to myself, This … THIS is the beginning of a solid future. I have to nail this interview. Um, … no I didn’t. It turns out I could have probably walked in there wearing a grimy tee shirt, overalls, and muddy boots. I could have looked the man right in his eyes and said, "I’ll be a dang good’n fer ya, if’n y’all’ll hire me!" I could have then spit on the floor from a mouth chawing down on a world record wad of tobacco and he would have hired me. Why? Because I was breathing and it was the small loans industry in the late nineties. At that time, small loan companies turned over employees faster than a Baptist heads for the banana pudding. If they lost someone, all they had to do was put an ad in the paper promising the opportunity for high-falutin’ bossiness of pants and people like me would come running. The nice office was a facade, just like free Disney World tickets in return for a short presentation turns into some salesman holding you hostage for hours while trying to convince you that the maintenance fees and your first born are a small price to pay for a time share. In other words, it’s a load of hockey. Thaaaat’s right, HOCKEY! He hired me on the spot and when I walked into the branch office I’d be working in for the first time, I had this feeling. It was kind of like that sensation you get when you thought it was gonna be gas, but then realize your body has bigger plans, mixed with the way I imagine state troopers feel when they get assigned to the DMV. The people behind the desks looked like they’d given up on life years ago and simply existed under the florescent lighting. I’d been told that the branch manager had been there for thirty years and would be the best at training me. And she was. She was a no-nonsense old lady who struck fear into the hearts of customers so that they wouldn’t dare be late or suffer the consequences. Consequences doled out by the hand of an old southern lady can be brutal. If you need to identify one, just look for the woman with her hair up in a bun, saying stuff like, I was workin’ here before Spot was a pup, or when you was still knee-high to a grass hoppah! I remember coming in one morning the first week I was there and having her tell me about killing a massive cockroach the night before. Biggest Palmetto bug you evah seen. I squarshed him flat as a flittah! You don’t mess with a woman like that. I think that’s why one customer’s husband tried to come over the counter at me at the end of my very first day. Here’s what happened: My job was to call delinquent customers. An account was considered delinquent after one day being past due. So if your payment was due on the 15th and you didn’t pay it, your account was delinquent on the 16th. I always hated that word … DELINQUENT. It’s the word that comes after Juvenile when you describe some brat who sets the woods on fire messing with fireworks unsupervised - twice, - or goes around collecting money for the functionally illiterate so he and his cousin, who did stupidly stupid things with him, could buy cigarettes. Yet, there you were, only one day past due and considered DELINQUENT. The problem was, there was no grace period. You pay on or before your due date, you’re awwwwwlright. You’re the best - the bee’s knees. But, you dare to be even one day late, you, sir, are DELINQUENT and we’ll call your home, your Nearby (which is a friend, family member, or neighbor you used as a reference when you got the loan), AND your place of work. And I ain’t jokin’! That was the policy and the old southern lady told me I would be expected to do that with every delinquent customer, twice a day, until I communicated with them and set a date that they would come in and pay. I didn’t want to do it, but I was afraid of the old southern lady and I needed the work, so I did it. And the husband of a woman with a very unique name I remember to this day (although, I won’t say it because of the third party disclosure thing and I’m not sure how long the statute of limitations on something like that lasts) cmae into the office just before we closed and said in a slightly perturbed manner, “WHO THE BLEEP IS MICHAEL?!” I don’t know why I didn’t say something like, He’s gone for the day or Michael? What Michael? Who know not this Michael of whom you speak. But I didn’t. I said, “I, good sir, am he. How may I be of assistance?” Mr. Angry Pants then tried to jump over the counter in my direction and would have squarshed my pants that weren’t feeling so bassy as flat as a flittah. That is, if the old southern lady hadn’t been a lot faster than she looked and made it to the counter before he could get over it. She stuck a bony finger in Mr. Angry Pants’s face and gave him down the country - another very southern phrase. By the time she was done with him, he had apologized and paid the loan payment. That was the beginning of a time in my life I refer to as the firey road to actual hell and I can’t blame Mr. Angry Pants. I might have marched into the office too, if it’d been me. I wouldn’t try to start a fight, but my pants would have totally been angry. The old southern lady had a stroke about three months into my working there and never came back. That’s when I really learned the finer points of being a jerk when it came to collecting. The next manager was a spitfire. There hadn’t been any warning about a new manager when I walked into the office on Monday morning and met the young southern man. He was two or three years older than me and wore a huge smile when he came to shake my hand and introduce himself. He nearly crushed my hand. He was wiry, strong and I could tell right away that things were about to get interesting. He’d been ushered into the managerial spot over the weekend almost immediately after the old southern woman had her stroke. In fact, I didn’t even know about the stroke until he told me and then explained to the office that things would be different from now on. Fast paced. We were gonna take butts and kick names, by glory! And things did change. Calling cards, which was what we did first thing every morning and before we closed every afternoon, was the first change I noticed. Calling cards is the harassment I told you about. If your account went delinquent, your information was kept on a yellow card and we had to call all of your numbers to try and contact you and mark down the results of every call. Calling cards with the old southern lady was like listening to somebody’s grandma give ‘em whut fer after they’d done something wrong. Calling cards with the young southern boy was like listening in on a college football tailgate conversation between two rival fans. He loved to tell people he was gonna come take their TV while they were watching it. I even heard him say to an old lady on the other end of the phone that he was gonna come take that box she watches her stories on. It was just plain meanness and I never liked it. I guess that’s why I didn’t make a good assistant manager. I refused to treat people that way and I think it probably drove the young southern man crazy that I wouldn’t do as he asked and use some of the same tactics he did. The crazy part of it was that with the exception of a few people, it seemed to work and most of our customers loved him. He’d get them riled up enough to come barging into the office, madder than hornet and by the time it was over, they were eating out of the palm of his hand. He just had a likable way about him once you got to know him. There was one time he didn’t get a customer to like him after he made her come in to sit in a booth and discuss why her account stayed constantly behind. She came in, sat down, listened to him run her over the coals, then left. But just before she walked out, right as she pulled open the door, she said something that made me laugh and summed up the young southern man. She said, “Mean ass loan man.” After the young southern man left for greener pastures, there were a couple of others that came through. One was a young man fresh out of the military who had more interest in booze than running an office. The other was a whole different cat than the alcoholic or the young southern man. He had a soft voice and a kind heart, except for one time he got into it with a woman on the phone and called her a B-word. He never did stuff like that and it had been a one-time thing. Unfortunately, the woman had been recording the call and there was a price he had to pay. Then it was my turn. Corporate felt like I had been groomed long enough and it was time I took over as manager of the branch. By then, I had been with the company for almost two years and wanted out, but the money was good and the promotion came with a raise and incentives. But like I said, I can’t treat people that way and it showed in the numbers. After a couple of months, there was a surprise visit from the district manager to see about fixing my issue of being a nice person. I couldn’t stand the man. He was arrogant and he shifted from side to side on his feet if he was standing when he talked to you. Earlier, I mentioned the process of sitting in a booth to discuss your account. That’s what we tried to get you to do if you were having trouble paying - come in and sit in a booth across from you. We would try to make you feel bad about it, scold you about how we were good enough to make the loan when you needed it, and try to lock you into a promise to pay on time from now on. And oh yeah, we were also to try and make you pay a payment right then, no matter what. On the day my district manager came for a visit, so did an old lady who had been under the same loan with us for - no joke - 50 YEARS! I’d tried on numerous occasions to convince her to stop renewing the loan and just pay it out so she didn’t owe us any more. She renewed every three months because she got a little back, then payed on it religiously on the third. She came in that day and asked me to sit with her in the booth. She had a problem. She had no idea my district manager was just on the other side of the partition from her in the next booth over, listening to how I would handle it. My check didn’t come in on time this month. There was a mix up at the social security office, she told me, then asked if she could renew it and skip the payment. I told her it wasn’t up for renewal yet. Then she said, I have the money, but if I give it to you today, I won’t have enough for my medicine. This woman had paid us who knows how much in interest over the past few years and she never missed a payment. She was never once … DILENQUENT. She asked if she could skip this month and double up on her payment next month. I told her that would be fine and for her not to worry about it. She’d been a loyal, perfect customer for that long, I didn’t see why we couldn’t trust her to catch it up the next month. The little old lady was as happy and relieved as she could be. My district manager was not as happy and relieved as he could be. He was the exact opposite of happy and relieved. You might say he was quite the Mr. Grumpy Pants about it because as soon as the old lady was out the door, he slid over into the booth and sat across from me where she’d been. And his pants were grumpy. Now there are only a few things in this world that set me off without fail, some of which include pointing your finger at me in a mean way, pinching me for any reason at all, and having no mercy on the elderly, just to name a few. Mr. Grumpy Pants managed to hit on two of those. Had he pinched me, I might be telling you about this from a prison cell. Red faced, he pointed his finger at me and sounding a lot like Foghorn Leghorn, he said something to the effect of, “Now boy - I say, Boy - that’s the problem we’re havin’ with this heyuh braynch! That woman told you she had the money in her pocket.” I explained that she was the perfect customer, that I’d never had to call her once for her payment, and that I was confident she would do as she said. “You should have told her she has a contract and she had to pay that payment right now!” “But she has medicine to buy.” “NOT OUR - I say - NOT OUR PROBLEM!” It gives me such sweet satisfaction to think back on what happened next. I looked him square in his red pie face, locked eyes with him, reached in my pocket for my keys to the branch, and smiled as I slowly slid them across the table to his side. He looked confused and asked me what I was doing. I told him I refused to treat people that way any longer and I quit. Then I told him not to forget to lock up. He told me I couldn’t do that. “You can’t do that, son, I can’t stay all day. I’ve got somewhere to be.” “Not my - I say - not my problem. And yes I can do that.” I packed up my stuff while he huffed over the telephone, desperately trying to find someone who could relieve him for the rest of the day. I was a grinning Mr. Smarty Pants all the way out the door. I savor that memory every time. I guess I should let it go, but I have to try and keep something positive about my experience being a Loan Man. Over twenty years later, I still have nightmares about walking to work and sitting behind an old desk in a dingy office to call cards. I’ve had a couple of small loans since then out of necessity, and after sharing war stories with the people who still work in the industry, I think I could probably do that again if I had to. Things have changed. You have to treat people with respect now, or they’ll hire a Mr. Lawyer Pants to sue your Criminal Pants. I did eventually achieve Bossy Pants status, but it took starting my own business and I’m glad I did. Of course, now I’m about to take my company in a scary new direction and I might need your prayers. Or a loan.
Hi everyone and welcome to episode 10 of Your Social Media Journey. Today’s episode is all about photography. Good photography has never been more crucial for a business, if you are to use social media as a marketing channel. And, for social media to work for you, it is very important that you be switched on all the time as a photographer - because, lets face it, it is impossible to have a professional photographer present at all times! One of the main reasons my own business, Fair Cake, managed to make a big impact online was because I take very good pictures. Not boasting, just casually claiming. I have never claimed to make the best cakes, far from it, but I do take good enough pictures - those that did my products justice. And, I also know how to edit them. Before you accuse me of, well, cheating, know that pretty much every picture you see on social media has been edited. In fact, you probably already know that different cameras give you different results. Some smartphone cameras give you a saturated image even before you tell it to. In this episode, I will break it down - I will tell you the BASICS and some tricks about how to take good pictures. But, if you are already in the know about f-stops and exposure and apertures, maybe give this episode a miss because you are already way ahead of me, my friend! If this is your first time listening to my podcast, my name is Shikhita and I started my business, Fair Cake, in 2007. In the last eleven years or so, I have extensively used social media to promote and market my business. Fair Cake now boats of more than half a million followers across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and is still going strong as London’s best Cake School. In this podcast, I share my experiences of starting and running a business, and, above all, how I use social media to minimise my marketing budget. I also interview other business owners and discuss with them their strategy of how they use social media on a day to day basis. So, lets get back into photography.Smartphones were not around in 2007, so I started my business with a little Canon point and shoot camera that produced images of 8megapixels. I was very happy with that. My current iPhone shoots images of 12mega pixels. I am also happy with that! Back in the day, I used to shoot the images on my camera, then attach the camera to my computer and then download images there. I used a free software called Gimp (or GNU Image Manipulation Program) to edit those images and then would put them on my website. Phew! Now, I mostly take images with my phone, which is currently a slightly damaged iPhone 7+, use apps to edit and post them straight onto social media. Things have moved forward. However, the principles have remained the same.I do have some experience of DSLR (Or Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras) photography and I will can tell you the that image difference between a DSLR camera and an iPhone camera is still HUGE. There is a reason that photographers are MORE in demand, even though most of us have a super computer in our pocket - its because DSLR photography does produce better results. However, having said that, you can still use your smartphone to take equally good pictures. Here are some tips on how to take good pictures, using a camera or a smartphone.1. Tip number one is to use a tripod. You will not believe just how useful a tripod is. You can buy a tripod very inexpensively online and they are even cheaper secondhand. Once you have a tripod, if you are using a smartphone, you need to ensure that you also purchase a mount on which to clip on your phone or camera. Having a tripod made a HUGE difference to my photography. Firstly, I was able to shoot similar images of different products. Second, it helps by eliminating hand jitters and third, you can focus on rearranging the product for multiple images than worrying about the camera. Once it is set, it is set and ready to go. When the camera angle remains the same, and you get multiple images, it is much easier to sort through and choose the best one. So this is a non-negotiable basic requirement, get yourself a tripod!2. Tip number two is to not photograph things in directly sunlight! I know, this is so counterintuitive. Things SEEM so well lit on a lovely sunny day, but actually, they cast really rather strong shadows. The best outdoor light for photography is that where shadows are not strong, so an overcast but bright day is perfect. In my experience, the best place to photograph pretty much anything is next to a large window, but indoors. If the sun is streaming through that window, I hang a light weight white bedsheet as a curtain to keep the light coming in but not the shadows. Even when photographing cakes, no matter how pretty they look in the sunshine, I prefer to photograph them indoors. This is true especially of selfies - and if you are taking pictures of someone. When the sun is bright on your face, you most likely squint your eyes, or if you force them open, then your forehead sort of crinkles. Trust me. I have several of my own wedding pictures to prove - it was a lovely sunny day, thank you very much!3. Tip number three is to use the Portrait Mode. Check the settings on your smartphone. If you have an iPhone7 and above or have bought your phone over the last couple of years, chances are that the phone will have a portrait mode. Portrait mode allows you take professional looking picture with a blurry background. It is great for, well, portraits and product images. Now the reason whey portrait mode works is because it computationally, big word there, fixes the issues that you will face when taking a selfie. Now, ordinarily, when you take a selfie, your camera is usually less than two feet away from your face. It is proven that selfies distort your face by around 30%. I will link to this article in the show notes, if you are a geek like me, check it out. To ensure that your nose does not look rounded or massive, it would be great to have five feet long arms, but we have not evolved that much yet. Instead, use portrait mode and you will see a difference straight away. If someone else is taking a picture of you, ask them to use portrait mode. If you are taking it yourself, get that tripod out. There is a big difference!4. Tip number four is to find a plain background for your images. Not one-colour plain, but plain as in fuss-free. Again, this is because a fussy background detracts from the image itself and our eye is drawn to everything else that is happening in the picture. Most of the very highly successful photography brands on social media tend to have very simple images. Simple does not mean easy, a lot of effort goes into it! For product photography, especially cake photography, the set up in my workshop is very simple. I buy photography paper -if you look this up on google, you will see that you can buy large rolls of different colours and prints. I tend to stick to colours rather than buying prints. This paper is draped on a photography backdrop stand, which is essentially a horizontal bar propped up on two stands. Then I place a table in front of this backdrop and click away. The whole thing can be folded away. Pretty much all cakes that are featured on the Fair Cake website were photographed this way! The focus then becomes the cake rather than anything else.5. Tip number five is to avoid using flash. Using a flash adds a very shiny light to your image, it pretty much never looks good. You can use a flash artfully on proper cameras by making light bounce here there and everywhere, but smartphone flash pretty much never does anyone any good!6. Tip number six to avoid zooming in. Since smartphone cameras do not have a long lens, such as the one you would find in a proper camera, they zoom in computationally. As a result, the final image is not as high a quality. If you must zoom, see if you can get closer to the subject. I’m sure you have seen photographers perched on the boundaries of big football matches and music concerts - with their HUGE camera lenses. Now those are proper zoom lenses. Our smartphones are not quite there yet, not in 2019 anyway!7. Tip number seven is good editing. Sometimes, despite great effort, by the time you got the subject in place, and the tripod all set up, the sun goes behind the clouds! Or, someone calls you on the phone you are taking pictures with or some other bit of life takes over. And before you know it, the cake that you were photographing is slightly tilted, or a bit of a comic book shows up in one corner of the image, or, the light was not quite right. We used to have PhotoShop, which was relatively expensive and, not to mention, technical, or free photo manipulation software that tended to be counterintuitive (at least I found so!) and overly tricky to use. Well, my friends, the good news is that there are so many apps that you can now use to fix your images. Here are some of the things you can now do, without being an IT wizz -a) If an image looks a bit tilted, you can straighten it up. Most iPhones will allow you to do so in their own built in photo editing tools, so will most Android phones. If you wish to do so using an app, look for one that allows you to change Perspective. A free app is SnapSeed. It is by Google and is fairly simple to use on your smartphone.b) If the light was a bit poor when you were taking a picture, you can brighten it up, not just by using brightness and increasing it, but by increasing exposure. Again, on SnapSeed, you can do so fairly simply.c) If your product or subject is looking a bit washed out and you wanted to make it look more colourful, try playing around with saturation settings. Incidentally, you can do a pretty good job of editing pictures on Instagram, including saturating with colour and fixing tilts.d) Finally, if there was a little smudge on the tablecloth or a little mark on the picture that is totally bothering you, you can fix that, too! On SnapSeed, you can fix this by using a feature called Healing. Good name, eh?So I wish that SnapSeed were sponsoring this podcast episode, by they are not. I just like the app. But, if someone in Google is listening, get in touch - I would love to have a you as a sponsor. Back to photography -After you have upped your photography game, you will feel so much more in control of your social media presence. Images play such a big role in representing you and your brand that it is worth investing some time and effort into good photography.Having said all of this, I do still believe that a professionally taken picture can do absolute wonders for your brand. And, if a professional photographer is much too expensive for you to consider, then consider buying a proper DSLR camera and take a photography class. It is easier than you think. But DO take that class! In the last few years, I have met countless people who come to my workshop with super fancy cameras, but use it in the Auto mode! I took the route of taking a one-day photography class and have never ever regretted it. We learned three basics - f-stop, exposure and aperture and it changed my life. So I highly recommend you take a class. It is much easier to learn when someone can tell exactly what you are doing and what you could be doing better.I actually recently got a quote from a photographer to take some pictures of me. I am after those pictures - you know the ones? The ones where I could be laughing perfectly, looking away from the camera, with perfectly white teeth? Or the ones where I am sitting on a desk, behind a laptop, with a coffee in hand and typing effortlessly? Though, how would I type with one hand? I am sure you have seen the kinds of pictures I am talking about, personal branding pictures. Anyway, the quote was around £350 for 10 images. That is £35 per image. I will definitely get those done, because I know that I NEED good images of me, BUT, it is still a high price. But before I hire someone for £350, I want to make certain that I have the entire photoshoot planned, the outfits ready and a venue ready. Before that happens, I will also practise smiling at a camera - in order to do that, I have gone ahead and ordered a bluetooth remote and will take my own pictures with my iPhone. If you want to see what these pictures look like, you can follow me on @yoursocialmediajourney on Instagram, because they will definitely end up there! And when I do end up getting a professional photoshoot done, I will be sure to make a podcast episode all about it.So there you have it, seven tips on how to up your smartphone photography game. As always, I would love to hear from you. The show notes of this episode are available on my website, www.yoursocialmediajourney.com/podcasts/10. Thats yoursocialmediajourney.com/podcasts/10. Here you will find all the tips written out and the names of any apps I have mentioned . If you have not done so already, please subscribe to this podcast. I would love LOVE a good review, especially on Apple Podcasts. And, if you have any questions, please do let me know. you can reach out on Instagram where you can find my on @yoursocialmediajourney or you can send me an email via my website. And I DO mean ANY question - I remember that feeling myself when you feel that your question might be too basic. Well, basics is what I am good at - so send away! And, if you have a contact that works for SnapSeed, send them a link to this podcast. Why not, eh. Until next time, bye for now!

Dave covers High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) HEIF is the new image compression technique used by Apple in iOS 11 to reduce the size of photos you capture on your iPhone in a move to conserve storage space. Suppose you have a JPG photo with a 5 MB file size, it will be reduced to 2.6 – 3 MB, as a result of HEIF compression. With this technique, there’s no sacrifice on image quality at all, and that’s probably why Apple decided to implement this in the latest iOS version. The next big thing in cameras can't be measured in megapixels or lens elements. From now on, the best camera you can buy will be the one with the best algorithms. Whether you're playing with Portrait Mode on the iPhone, stitching together huge 3D images from the Light L16, or goofing off in augmented reality, all the hard work in your pictures now happens after you hit the shutter. For a couple of ex-Instagram employees, this presents an opportunity.
Even if the Portrait mode algorithms improve, I'd like to see some support for touching up problematic depth maps.

On the show this week @erfon / @bst3r / @lkahney iPhone 8’s biggest features could be disabled at launch https://www.cultofmac.com/492358/iphone-8s-biggest-features-disabled-launch/ Some of the iPhone 8’s biggest new features could be disabled when the handset makes its debut this September. According to Fast Company, there is “a sense of panic in the air” at Apple as engineers scramble to iron out software bugs that are affecting wireless charging and 3D facial recognition. For both features, the hardware is ready — but the software that controls the features is “not ready for prime time.” If Apple cannot fix the issues, wireless charging could be disabled when the iPhone 8 goes on sale this September. Users would then have to wait for a future iOS update for it to be enabled — just like Portrait Mode on iPhone 7 Plus, which wasn’t ready for launch last fall. Same goes for facial recognition, but this report says Apple will indeed include a touch ID sensor under the screen, so at least you’ll have that. Apple offers free Beats in latest Back to School promo https://www.cultofmac.com/492362/apple-offers-free-beats-latest-back-school-promo/ Apple is giving away free Beats headphones for its latest Back to School promotion. If you don’t want those, you can upgrade to the Powerbeats3 earphones for $50, or to the Solo3 headphones for $150. Those ballers purchasing a qualifying Mac will receive a free pair of Solo3 wireless headphones worth $299.95. Eligible machines include the MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Pro — but not the more affordable Mac mini, which hasn’t been updated in 1001 days. Designer preps new version of Steve Jobs’ iconic mock turtleneck https://www.cultofmac.com/489890/designer-bringing-new-version-steve-jobss-iconic-mock-turtleneck/ The story behind Steve Jobs mock turtleneck As was revealed in Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography of Jobs, the Apple CEO was first inspired to wear his mock turtleneck uniform following an early 1980s trip to Japan. While there, he asked Sony chairman Akio Morita why everyone in the company’s factories wore uniforms. Jobs learned that this was a way of creating camaraderie between co-workers. Miyake created Sony’s uniforms, which Jobs loved. However, the Jobs could not persuade his colleagues that an Apple uniform was a good idea. As Jobs recalled, “I came back with some samples and told everyone it would be great if we would all wear these vests. Oh man, did I get booed off the stage. Everybody hated the idea.” However, the process led to Jobs becoming good friends with Miyake. When the Apple chief asked the designer to create a one-off uniform he could wear, Miyake created 100 black mock turtlenecks for him. Jobs adopted the unofficial uniform when he returned to Apple in the late 1990s, and was rarely spotted without it from that point on. Fashion designer Issey Miyake, creator of Steve Jobs’ iconic mock turtleneck, is launching a very similar shirt that will go on sale next month for $270. Although not exactly the same, the new creation — referred to as the Semi-Dull T — looks close enough to the now-discontinued original design The magic behind HomePod gets revealed in a new patent https://www.cultofmac.com/491306/magic-behind-homepod-revealed-new-patent/ According to Apple, its upcoming HomePod smart speaker will “reinvent the way we enjoy music” thanks to its seven-tweeter array, 4-inch woofer, and smart “spatial awareness” technology that lets it “read” its environment. HomePod sets out to solve the problem of sound variability caused by a speaker’s physical location in a room. For instance, placing a speaker in the corner can cause a significant increase in radiated acoustic power at low frequencies. That results in muddy, bass-heavy sound. It utilizes a variety of microphones both inside and outside a sealed speaker enclosure. Onboard processing establishes the correct equalization filter, based on internal pressure levels, speaker displacement, external pressure and other data gathered by the microphone array. Comparing readings from its internal and external microphones allows the speaker Apple describes to dynamically alter its own calibration according to match the environment. Apple says its smart speaker will boast an impressive A8 processor and six external microphones iOS 11 makes it far easier to organize Home screen app icons http://www.cultofmac.com/485556/organize-iphone-home-screen-ios-11/ Rather than painstakingly dragging individual app icons across the pages of your Home screen, iOS 11 lets you move multiple icons simultaneously You can also touch an app icon, then use your other hand to swipe to a different page to move the app Built-in Screen recording If you wanted to capture iOS gameplay, or make a funny or informative GIF of on-screen action, you needed to download a third-party app or connect your device to a computer. With iOS 11, Apple baked in sweet functionality that lets you record your iPhone screen effortlessly. Developer Access to iPhone's NFC Chip Coming in iOS 11 https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/07/developer-access-iphone-nfc-chip-ios-11/ Developers coding for iOS 11 will be able to create apps that can read NFC tags! The NFC chip in the iPhone is currently only used to handle contactless Apple Pay transactions and Passbook check-ins, but a new framework called Core NFC allows developers to build apps that can read and write NFC tags (in iPhone 7 and 7 Plus).
