A brilliant and classic song, overshadowed by a perfectly serviceable, but odd, cover of a cover, and a little help from James Gunn. Hooked on a Feeling, originally by BJ Thomas, covered by Blue Swede. Outro music is Listen to Your Heart, by Roxette.

They're the most popular episodes on The Bridge: the weekly songfest that drops the needle on the universal language, music. Heyang starts the show with a powerful song by Tan Weiwe that focuses on domestic violence called "Xiao Juan" from 2020. In a major switching of gears, John loads up "Running Down A Dream" from the late, great Tom Petty. From there you'll hear music and more from Linkin Park, Blue Swede, J-Lo, Pink and Chicago.

Some of these songs...I can't even find the years they were released. Drink Your Wine - Free Reign (1968?) Pop/Rock group from Evansville, Indiana. Originally known as The Corvettes. Josef Laufer and the Golem Group - Ďábel diskoték (Disco Duck) (1977) A Czech version of the Rick Dees American hit. Frantz - Exhibition Tonight (1983) Freddy Cannon with Ron Dante - Down On Beale Street (2019) I have featured both of these guys from time to time. Not always in a flattering light. So it goes. Ennio Morricone - Here's To You (1971) (feat. Joan Baez) This song, from the movie Sacco and Vanzetti, has its own Wikipedia page. You should read about Sacco and Vanzetti. James Luther Dickinson - John Brown (1972) Linda Sexton - Unborn (197?) Lyn Todd - Devil Woman (1980) Claude Peloquin/Jean Sauvageau - Monsieur l'Indien (Quebec 1974) "Recorded in one take, “Monsieur L’Indien’s” haunting loops were created using an analog/mechanical hybrid: small motors rotated an arm equipped with magnets which triggered pre-programmed sensors featuring snares and bass sounds, like the Wurlitzer Sound Man. Péloquin’s contribution was a haunting spoken-word piece about civilization slowly taking over First Nations by building high voltage electric lines around Monsieur l’Indien’s house. It was a slap in the face of Québec’s government, which had nationalized hydroelectricity some ten years earlier. “Frontiers are the hemorrhoids around a nationalist rash,” says Péloquin." The instrument was called a "Sauvageau machine". The Emporium - I'm So Glad/Rain/I Dig Rock and Roll Music (1970) The Tremeloes - Yellow River (1970) Traffic - Paper Sun (1967) I love this song. Always did. Steve Winwood was and is amazing. This was Traffic's first single. Waiting For The Sun - Waiting For the Sun (1978) Golden Half (ゴールデン・ハーフ) - 24,000 Kisses (1972) Wikipedia: Golden Half (Gōruden Hāfu) was an early 1970s J-pop band made up of 5 hafu members including Maria Mori, Eva Mary and Luna Takamura. Golden Half was promoted by Watanabe Productions and was composed in September 1970 to sing and go-go dance on the Fuji TV show BEAT POP. They often sang western pop songs in Japanese and split in 1974. The band appeared in the nightclub scenes in Yasuharu Hasebe's Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter where they performed their hit song Kiiroi Sakuranbo ("Yellow Cherry"). WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEIR PERFORMANCE???? As my son would say, this song slaps. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE TRAILER???? Trust me. You both do. Coalkitchen - Keep On Pushin (1977) Listen to the "pushin'" and you'll know it instantly as the hook in the Salt-n-Pepa song to come out years later. Those rap producers were no fools. Thieves. But not fools. Love - Walk Right In (1974) Yes, this is the same Arthur Lee band from psychedelia's heyday. Well, the same brand. Just totally different musicians. Charles Wilp - Werbung als Kunst - Afri Cola Werbung (1968) Another video you HAVE to see. "Sexy-mini-super-flower-pop-op-cola - everything is in Afri-Cola... " Famous models from the 1960s such as Marianne Faithfull, Amanda Lear, Donna Summer, Marsha Hunt [Ed: whom I have featured on this show many times - she had Mick Jagger's baby...] were depicted behind a pane of glass with ice crystals on advertising motifs for the rap-like slogan. According to Wilps, the idea for this arose during a visit to the Marshall Space Center in Huntsville (Alabama), where the Saturn V rocket was built at the time: The frozen, liquid oxygen stored in the workshop led to the formation of ice flowers on the windows of the moving cabins, behind the employees had hung pin-up photos of the 1960s beauties. Project 122 Featuring Charlie Green - Bus Stop (Electric Slide) (1990) Odyssey 5 – Everybody's Complaining (1974) Speed Glue Shinki - Calm Down (1972) Springbok - Night Fever (1978) A South African recording in the spirit of "Now That's What I Call Music", but it predated it. Except none of these recordings are by the original artists. They're cheap knockoffs. The Christopher Hayes Movement - Tribute To Jimi (1970) Marsha Hunt's 22 - Medusa (1973) The Equals - Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys (1970) Written by Eddie Grant, who, as POACA recall, had a hit with "Electric Avenue". The Piglets - Johnny Reggae (1971) Written, produced, and directed by Jonathan King, a relatively big deal in the UK (he came up with the "Ooga Chacka" intro to "Hooked On A Feeling" which was the hook for the US hit by Blue Swede) but in the US his only hit was "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" in 1967. He was another version of Kim Fowley, ever-teetering on the edge of an entire era without actually making any sort of big artistic difference. The Surfers - Windsurfin' (1978) It takes about 16 years for a trend to make it from the US to Sweden, I guess. The Wildweeds - I'm Dreaming (1968) Cadet Concept was the same label that featured Rotary Connection. Tony Fabbri - Tony The Cool Casanova (197?) I can find very little information on this guy, but I like this song for some reason. C.W. McCall - Kidnap America (1980) C.W. McCall was a character created by musician Billy Dale, for his advertising agency. The character was created for and first appeared in a commercial for Old Home Bread. Then, with producer Chip Davis, later to be famous for Mannheim Steamroller, he recorded a smash hit in the '70s with their CB/Trucker song, Convoy. This particular song was recorded in response to the hostage crisis in Iran from the previous year. Its effect remains to be fully measured. Moon Blood - Come Out Of Her (1970) Patrice Manget/Blue Gene Tyranny - Condom Sense (1981) Title song to a safe sex education film from 1981. The Residents - Loss of Innocence (1980) My second favorite Residents song. This album featured 40 minute-long songs. The album featured guest singers like Andy Partridge of XTC, Lene Lovich, and David Byrne of Talking Heads. Yes, THAT David Byrne. Amusement parks are caked with sounds A solid hunk of meat A barker's sweat flings from his tongue His tattoo shines with heat A wary stranger stands and sways Enraptured by his stance Two-headed goats come stumbling by And give a troubled glance The barker looks into the eyes The stranger tries to bend The barker swears to more delights For all who seek within The stranger enters canvas doors And smells the fresh-cut hay The barker points to Siamese twins The stranger looks away The eyes of horse-faced women Watch the few who wander through They sense the tension in the air And smell the sweet taboo A heart beats fast against a chest The stranger leaves the tent The waves of people drown the sounds Of loss of innocence
By the time the ninth studio album was put out, The Beatles had achieved astounding critical and popular success. Their only double-album was self-titled. However it has become known as The White Album because, unlike the color and art of the prior Sargent Peppers album, this one was entirely without color, white, with simply the name "The Beatles" on the cover. Much of the songs on the album were created while the band was on a Transcendental Meditation retreat in India, and that influence can be felt in the scaled down, often acoustic feel of the songs. The band was also beginning to fragment, and arguments or hurt feelings would cause some of the songs to be recorded by just part of the group. Yoko Ono would become a constant presence with Lennon in the studio, contributing to the tension. Despite the iconic status the album achieved virtually from its release, there were still detractors. Some criticized songs like ”Back in the U.S.S.R.” to be too sympathetic of communism and accused the group of trying to brainwash American youth. Those on the left found the non-activist message of songs like “Revolution” to be a betrayal of leftist ideology during a period of intense social upheaval. And perhaps most famously, Charles Manson claimed inspiration for his violence in many songs from the album.Today, The White Album is rightfully considered one of the greatest albums of the rock era. We hope this podcast will encourage you to explore the album more fully. Back In the U.S.S.R.Mike Love of The Beach Boys was one of the participants in the Transcendental Meditation retreat. McCartney was encouraged by Mike Love to create a Soviet version of "California Girls." with this song. The name of the song was inspired by Chuck Berry's "Back In The U.S.A." McCartney plays drums on this single, as Ringo Starr briefly quit during this time.Dear PrudenceThe inspiration for this Lennon-penned song is Prudence Farrow, Mia Farrow's sister, who was also at the TM retreat. Prudence took the meditation so seriously that she fell into a catatonic state, which obviously worried the entire group. The song was written to lift her spirits. McCartney also played drums on this song in Starr's absence. While My Guitar Gently WeepsGeorge Harrison matured greatly as a songwriter on this album, and this is one of his more famous contributions. Lennon and McCartney were not enthusiastic about including this song, but relented when Harrison brought his friend Eric Clapton in to play (uncredited) on this song. The members of the Beatles were at each others throats at the time, and Clapton's presence exerted a calming influence on the band. This was also the first song in which Ringo Starr played drums after his return to the group.Helter SkelterAfter reading an interview of Pete Townshend in which he described a Who track, Paul McCartney was inspired to write the "loudest, nastiest, sweatiest rock number we could." This track is infamously associated with Charles Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Baby What You Want Me to Do” by Elvis PresleyThis month saw the release of Elvis's TV Comeback Special, "If I Can Dream." It was the highest rated show for the year of 1968. STAFF PICKS:“Hooked on a Feeling” by B.J. ThomasBruce gets the staff picks started this week with a song made famous by the motion picture "Guardians of the Galaxy." Written by Mark James, B.J. Thomas did the original in 1968. The track would be covered by Jonathan King in 1971, and then by Blue Swede in 1974, the Blue Swede cover being the one with which most are familiar.“Cinnamon” by DerekRob's upbeat staff pick was designed so that singer Johnny Cymbal could avoid being pigeonholed as a novelty singer. As a result, he went by the name, “Derek” for this release — which was his brother's name, Derek Cymbal. “I Got a Line on You” by SpiritWayne's pick is another upbeat track, this one from the Spirit album "The Family That Plays Together." The album got its name because lead guitarist was playing with his stepfather as drummer. Jay Ferguson was also in this band, who wrote the score for the American version of the television series "The Office." This track peaked at number 25.“Kentucky Woman” by Deep PurpleBrian features an unusual cover of Neil Diamond's 1967 original in a style that some call the first heavy metal song. The song was on the psychedelic and Arthurian album entitled "The Book of Taliesyn." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Joy of a Toy” by Soft MachineThis prog rock/psychedelic instrumental takes us out this week.

I ramble about my stressful day and a six-year-olds birthday party. Then I get into the good stuff, the Heart Guardian and loving yourself and why love spells can be no good - because they work, just not necessarily the way you planned. I also read an original poem I wrote called Marching Orders. If you’d like to schedule a reading, please send me a message on Instagram or through my website: http://adventuresofponyboy.com When I asked the angels to play me some music this morning they came back with Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling. Seemed appropriate. Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Happy Valentine’s Day!

For the final episode of this run of "Reel to Reel," Will and Nina look at the intersection of music and film: soundtracks. Whether it's an original score or an already popular hit, directors from Dennis Hopper to David Lynch have found ways to inventively include music within the worlds of their films. With that, the first edition of "Reel to Reel" is a wrap — thanks for listening, and we'll be back! Legendary songwriter Mark James is best known for writing the perennial standards “Always On My Mind” and “Suspicious Minds,” the latter earning induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Greatest Songs of All Time. Both compositions were originally hits for Elvis Presley, who recorded additional charting singles by James, including “Moody Blue,” “Raised on Rock,” and “It’s Only Love.” Mark’s initial success came with B.J. Thomas, who hit the charts with his songs “The Eyes of a New York Woman,” “Everybody Loves a Rain Song,” and the Top 5 single “Hooked on a Feeling,” which was revived as a #1 hit by Blue Swede in 1974 and was prominently featured in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy. Additional hits from the Mark James songbook include Brenda Lee’s Top 10 country single “Sunday Sunrise” and previous Songcraft guest Mac Davis’s Top 10 pop single, “One Hell of a Woman.” Mark found his greatest success with Willie Nelson’s revival of “Always On My Mind” in 1982. The record hit #1 on the country chart, became a Top 5 pop single, won BMI Song of the Year, earned CMA Song of the Year two years in a row, and was awarded a Grammy for both Best Country Song and Song of the Year. Other artists who’ve recorded Mark’s material include The Box Tops, Percy Sledge, Lou Rawls, Pet Shop Boys, Julio Iglesias, Helen Reddy, Waylon Jennings, Fine Young Cannibals, Dwight Yoakam, Phish, and Martina McBride. In 2000, BMI named Mark one of the top Songwriters of the Century. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.
If anyone knows how to use music to maximum effect on screen it's James Gunn. For James is the man behind both Guardians Of The Galaxy volumes, which are as celebrated for their hugely successful Awesome Mixes as his sharp, fun and witty interpretation of the Marvel franchise. In the movies, Star Lord Peter Quill listens to mixtapes given to him by his mother, which are laden with music from 1970's Earth. The songs often play during the action on screen, providing energy and drive to the narrative. As well as the joyous array of source cues, there's Tyler Bates' score, which you'll hear extracts from throughout the course of the conversation. Unfortunately, we weren't afforded as long with James as we'd have liked, so there was barely time to deal with all the tunes in the Guardians films, let alone anything else. But he's tremendous value and we still managed to cover plenty of ground. We also play loads of the Awesome Mixes, including tracks by the likes of Redbone, The Runaways, Raspberries and Blue Swede ...
We’ll start off with a random trivia question: Which actors played the character of Jay Gatsby in the 1949, 1974, and 2013 film versions of “The Great Gatsby”? We’ll have the answer later in the show. Today is International Landmine Awareness Day, Children’s Day in Hong Kong and Taiwan; Independence Day in Senegal. It’s unofficially World Rat Day, National Tell a Lie Day, and International Carrot Day. It’s the birthday of musician Muddy Waters, who was born in 1915; writer Maya Angelou, who was born in 1928; and actor Robert Downey Jr., who is 52. Now, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1974, the top song in the U.S. was “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede. The No. 1 movie was “The Great Gatsby,” while the novel “Burr” by Gore Vidal topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Weekly question: What is the second fastest land mammal? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. We'll have the correct answer on Friday’s episode. Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website. Sorry for the delay, but on the plus side it's a shorter episode this round. If it wasn't one thing it was another that kept on deterring me from completing this on time. As such I start things off with my review of Guardians of the Galaxy, followed by the Box Office Report. The Trailer Spot this week is the newest trailer of Interstellar. The news was admittedly lame this week, I mean there is like one juicy bit but otherwise it was weak sauce. And to finish things off, surprisingly, is my review of The Purge: Anarchy. What also might be surprising is what score I decided to give it. Enjoy the show! Opening and Closing Song- Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede
