Jonathan Drake shifts gears into chapter three of Spooner's Science of Justice, trading the tight logical if then structure for a narrative history lesson on how despotic government actually got started. Spoiler, it was not a noble experiment gone wrong. Spooner traces a direct line from ancient bands of robbers plundering agrarian farmers, to slaveholders realizing chains were bad optics, to the modern representative government that convinces everyone to vote for their own subjection. Expect Vikings compared unfavorably to senatorial candidates, a breakdown of how legislation has always just been the paperwork criminals use to divide their spoils, and a preview of Spooner's next essay on poverty and debt, which ties directly into his surprisingly Bitcoin adjacent monetary theory. Jon also weighs in on a current Supreme Court case and gives a candid nod to his own dip experiment gone wrong in Sudan.

On the eve of D-Day, the fate of the world hangs not on the beaches of Normandy, but deep within a secret Nazi facility in occupied France. Here, in a claustrophobic, slave-driven mine codenamed Noball 109, German scientists are racing to perfect a terror weapon that would render the Allied invasion obsolete: atomic-tipped V-2 rockets aimed at the heart of London Enter Miriam Maduro, a ghost haunted by her past. A brilliant and courageous Dutch-Jewish SOE agent, she has already been captured, tortured, and escaped the Nazis once. Now, the British pull her from the shadows for an offer she can't refuse: undertake a suicide mission to infiltrate and destroy the rocket facility, and they will guarantee safe passage for her young son and sister from Palestine to England. John Winn Miller is an award-winning investigative reporter, foreign correspondent, editor, newspaper publisher, screenwriter, movie producer, and novelist. This is the second stop on our five-part audio guide to Asheville, North Carolina, and it reaches back a lot further than you might expect. In this episode of Unpacked by Afar, host Aislyn Greene unpacks the long, strange story of Asheville wellness, and why doctors have been sending patients to these mountains for more than a century and a half. To understand where Asheville wellness began, Aislyn talks with David Freedman, an infectious disease physician and travel medicine expert who retired to the city. He explains the era of climatotherapy, when clean mountain air and a just-right altitude were prescribed for the respiratory illnesses of the Industrial Revolution, and for the deadliest disease of the 19th century, tuberculosis. It's a history written into the architecture itself, from buildings angled toward the prevailing wind to the once-ubiquitous sleeping porch, and even into the phrase “health resort,” which Asheville helped invent. Then Aislyn brings the story to the present, where Asheville wellness has grown into one of the most diverse scenes in the country. She heads into the Asheville Salt Cave and Spa, surrounded by 30 tons of ancient Himalayan salt, and hears from owner Jodie Appel about the surprising family story that started it all. She also sits in on a sound bath with sound therapist Kristin Hillegas, and gathers the full, wonderfully weird range of what you can try here, from hydrotherapy and aura photography to a practitioner known as the Breath Nurse. It all adds up to a rich piece of cultural travel and a portrait of a place locals call the Happy City. Whatever draws you to these mountains, it's a reminder that the best travel experiences often start with simply feeling better, and that knowing where to go can be its own kind of medicine. Unpacked by Afar is a travel podcast that unpacks one destination at a time. This Asheville audio guide continues across three more episodes, so look for the rest of the series waiting in the feed. From the desk of Pete: Summertime tent-pole movies were a staple of the 90s and few films were more tent-poling than Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Robin Hood didn't start the trend but rather it defined what a summer blockbuster should be: hire a star-studded cast, dress them all in incredible costuming, film in stunning set locations, don't write an overcomplicated script, and pepper in enough humor so as not to take yourself too seriously. This movie was so much in the public zeitgeist that kids were playing Merry Men and Sheriffs instead of Cops and Robbers... well maybe not but I like to think so. Grab your kids and a big bowl of popcorn, this one should be on the watchlist.

They stopped an armed robbery, held a suspect for police, and protected their coworkers — then got fired for it. Kim St. Onge uncovers the infuriating story of two St. Louis Starbucks employees who fought back against armed robbers at a campus-area location in December 2023, only to be terminated for violating company policy. Surveillance video just surfaced after years of litigation, and the details will make your blood boil. These workers were pistol-whipped, attacked, and staring down what they believed were loaded guns — and Starbucks said they should have just complied. The lawsuit is back in St. Louis circuit court and the outcome could send a massive message to corporate America about whose side they're really on. When companies value liability over the lives of the people who work for them, something has gone deeply wrong in this country. You need to hear every detail of this one.
