Listeners of Under the Tree are well aware of the fact that the US is a Prison Nation, with over 2,000,000 people locked inside cages every day, aware, as well, that we are abolitionists involved in the movement-making and world-building work that will one day make prisons obsolete. But the carceral state is a many-legged monster with dangerous tentacles stretching out in every direction—there are now over 4,000,000 people under state supervision, on parole or probation. It's an enormously expensive enterprise that does nothing to reduce risk to society while creating enormous hazards for anyone coming home or caught in its web. One in four people caged today is locked up for a violation (curfew, association, failure to report, and more). This episode—a conversation with Vinnie Schiraldi, author of Mass Supervision: Probation, Parole, and the Illusion of Safety and Freedom, and friend-of the-pod Renaldo Hudson—was recorded at the intrepid, worker-owned bookstore, Pilsen Community Books, a familiar and favorite haunt of ours.
EPISODE 1767: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Vincent Schiraldi, author of MASS SUPERVISION, about the illusion of safety and freedom in today's American criminal justice systemVincent Schiraldi has extensive experience in public life, founding the policy think tank, the Justice Policy Institute, then moving to government as director of the juvenile corrections in Washington DC, and then as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Probation. Most recently Schiraldi served as Senior Advisor to the New York City Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. Schiraldi gained a national reputation as a fearless reformer who emphasized the humane and decent treatment of the men, women, and children under his correctional supervision. He pioneered efforts at community-based alternatives to incarceration in NYC and Washington DC. Schiraldi received a MSW from New York University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Binghamton University.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.
In the past decade, the problem of mass incarceration has gotten increased attention and thought. But in his new book, Mass Supervision, Vincent Schiraldi argues that in those conversations, people often neglect to think about probation and parole — two of the biggest feeders to the U.S.'s prison population. These systems surveil close to four million Americans, which Schiraldi says is both a huge waste of resources and a massive human rights violation. On this episode, we're talking to Schiraldi about how probation and parole came to be, why they're no longer working as they were once supposed to, and why he thinks they might need to be done away with entirely.

Calvin Schiraldi reached the major leagues on talent and will. But no amount of natural ability or desire could help him defeat alcoholism. His career with the Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, and Padres featured incredible highs and serious lows. Some of the depths on the field led to self-medication and the darkest of times in the grips of alcohol. Today he's winning off the field, helping others with his story of sobriety, and living a life totally fulfilled and free of alcohol.

I was always somewhere in between the two. And I felt [it] clicked for me that [this] was the right career path. And I've been in packaged goods and consumer products ever since.” — Paul Schiraldi [0:18:15]“I give [L'Oreal] credit because whenever I felt like I was getting a little antsy and ready to move, even without [me] saying anything, they were very good at presenting me with another opportunity.” — Paul Schiraldi [0:20:07]“I really didn't expect to be considered for the role. I do hot yoga, which I love — it's just really really great at clearing my mind.” — Paul Schiraldi [0:39:47]“I find, for me, the most satisfying thing is when I can do an activity where it takes my mind off of that constant dialogue, and the constant analysis that is going on in my head.” — Paul Schiraldi [0:40:20]“I think it's always the balance between tenacity and flexibility. It's having the determination to continue with something, [and having] a vision that you believe in, but also knowing when to be flexible [and] pivot.” — Paul Schiraldi [0:49:01]

As social beings, we all compare ourselves to others. However, how can we stop comparing ourselves to others in a way that is destructive. It all comes down to knowing your intrinsic self-worth and building positive self-esteem. In today's episode, I come to this topic as a seeker or explorer myself. I decided to tackle this topic because I've had several requests from readers of my blog and others. It's a common issue that can hold people back from being their best selves and living the life of their dreams. So, I'm diving in. In How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others: Know Your Self-Worth, I draw upon some prior research and I share some key themes from the book, 10 Simple Solutions for Building Self-Esteem: How to End Self-Doubt, Gain Confidence, and Create a Positive Self-Image (Glenn R. Schiraldi, 2007). There are so many gold nuggets in this book. The point that resonated most with me is the importance of Unconditional Worth - a building block to healthy self-esteem. Knowing that you have an intrinsic worth that is equal, immeasurable, and unchanging is a game-changer when comparing yourself to another. Listen in as I share why you compare yourself to others, the good that comes from it, and how you can make reasonable comparisons without going down a downward spiral and damaging your sense of self. When you've finished listening, head over to my private Facebook group, The Aha! Community (join, if you're not a member) or go to IG @tonya.yourahalife.com and we'll continue the conversation. As always, thank you for listening. Please download, leave a review, thumbs up, 5-star rating, and also important, please share with your networks across social media. Today we share Dennis Schiraldi’s Story. He is the founder of the annual DOYO LIVE marketing event and founder of ‘The Icon’s of Youngstown’ Publication. He shares how he got started in the business, what it takes to be an entrepreneur and how he decided to go all in on himself. Dennis has had a great career in both marketing and sales and we ask him how both have changed over the last decade. He says that one of the biggest changes in sales is the inflation of base salaries for sales teams. Part of the reason for this is sales cycles just take longer now and there is a much larger emphasis on the knowledge sharing & information requirements that a sales person needs to have about their product. We are also seeing a lot of churn in sales teams the expectation for closing sales is now so high (due to inflated salaries) and reaching your targets/quotas is almost unattainable in most companies. His solution: Don’t sell S@&! to people that they don’t need.He advises to never put your need for making a sale above what the customers need are. It’s a losing strategy.Dennis believe’s companies should consider incentivizing by teams, meaning both sales and marketing teams reap reward if goal thresholds are met. He also believes the negative perception of sales people has largely been a self-inflicted wound. Most sales people don’t put the customers needs first, they put their own need of having to make a sale first ahead of the customer. He shares how empathy, relationship-building, patience paired with some hustle and hard-work go a long way in building a successful sales career in 2019.

In today's episode, Sam and Abram chat with Vinny Schiraldi, who oversaw radical changes running Juvenile Corrective Services in Washington, DC. Listen to Vinny explain how, guided by his approach of “acting incrementally while dreaming boldly,” he vastly cut down on institutionalization, abuse, and corruption. The story includes a steady stream of trauma and a lot of patient collaboration. Topics of conversation include the advocates and bureaucrats with whom Vinny painstakingly reformed the system; how to work with staff who are traumatized by, but also propagate, a toxic status quo; myths and facts about juvenile justice; and how an institution that is a site of abuse and violence can become a place of healing. Vinnie also shares how he went from working at a group home to running a major juvenile justice system – and how he arrived at his conclusion that “mass incarceration is going to end.” Content warning: This episode may not be suitable for children, and includes some brief descriptions of violence and abuse (including sexual violence) in juvenile justice settings. “Dismantling the System: What Juvenile Decarceration can Teach us About Undoing Mass Incarceration” Keynote address by Vincent Schiraldi, Senior Research Fellow, Criminal Justice Policy and Management at Harvard University Using the Juvenile Justice System as a starting point, Schiraldi will uncover why the number of young people locked up has declined by more than 50% since the beginning of this millennium while adult incarceration has only flattened out. Through this exploration, Schiraldi will share some of the key elements and actions needed to decrease mass incarceration in America, and the significant role that citizens are playing to dismantle the system. Vincent Schiraldi is a Senior Research Fellow directing the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. Schiraldi has served as founder of Justice Policy Institute, director of juvenile corrections in Washington, D.C., and Commissioner of the NYC Department of Probation. Most recently, Schiraldi served as Senior Advisor to the NYC Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. For Schiraldi, making communities safer and reducing crime means improving fairness in the system and developing opportunities in poor communities. He pioneered efforts at community-based alternatives to incarceration with the YouthLink initiative in D.C., and in NYC with the NeON network and the Close to Home program.
Have you ever wondered what it is that enables some people to endure extreme adversity, and then be able bounce back from it? World-renowned author, speaker, and professor, Dr. Glenn Schiraldi, calls that special ingredient “resilience.” The recent movie Unbroken about WWII veteran and Japanese prison camp survivor Louis Zamperini gives us a glimpse of what that resilience looks like. Dr. Schiraldi interviewed Mr. Zamperini a few years ago, along with a number of other WWII veterans and holocaust survivors and has written about much of what he has learned in a number of different books. Photo of Louis Zamperini. “When he thought of his history, what resonated with him now was not all that he had suffered but the divine love that he believed had intervened to save him.” ― Laura Hillenbrand In his recent book, The Resilient Warrior, Dr. Schirali writes, "Resilience is those strengths of mind and character—both inborn and developed—that help us to respond well to adversity. The strengths of resilience help us to: • Perform at our very best, even under pressure • Prevent and recover from combat stress-related problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, problem anger, drug/substance abuse, and difficulty connecting with others • Maintain and improve peak mental fitness throughout life." He is the author of 12 books on stress-related topics that include: The Complete Guide to Resilience; The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Sourcebook; and World War II Survivors: Lessons in Resilience. Recently I had the privilege to attend several of his lectures on the topic of resilience. He was kind enough to sit down and share his time in the following interview.
