In this episode, Simone Stolzoff explores why the need for certainty is holding you back and how learning to live with uncertainty can lead to greater resilience, better decisions, deeper relationships, and a more meaningful life. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and his own deeply personal experiences, Simone explains why our brains crave certainty, why that instinct often fuels anxiety and overthinking, and how embracing the unknown can become a source of growth rather than fear. There is something directing your life. You’re not doing this on your own. You’re either under the influence of the world and the flesh, or you’re under the influence of the Holy Spirit. One of these guides your thoughts, your attitude, your perspective and your actions – and your life looks radically different depending on your influencing factors. Look around my friend – if you aren’t pleased with what’s growing in your life, it may be a result of what you’re attached to – because whatever you’re attached to is drastically influencing every area of your life. Paul writes in Galatians and tells us of what is naturally produced in our lives when we’re attached to Jesus. Growing in Jesus means God’s Holy Spirit is influencing you. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit, you are different than you would be on your own. Different things grow in your life. You are given a different perspective with different priorities. And the beautiful thing is, it happens so naturally. This isn’t something you will or force, it just grows. We’re given a list of 9 fruits that grow in our lives as a result of the direction of the Holy Spirit and it’s inner influence: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control. These are the fruits of the Holy Spirit, meaning what grows from connection. And really think about the real life circumstances and struggles you woke up to today – what you need to face this is right here within the list of things that grow from within you when you’re connected to Jesus. Your answer … CONNECT TO JESUS! You don’t have to force this. You don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not. The Holy Spirit will work within you to produce precisely what is needed and it will come from inside you, naturally producing in your life. Now maybe you’ve heard of the Fruits of the Spirit before. Maybe you even have them memorized and can ramble them off. Maybe this is brand new to you. Awesome. This is for you. Exactly where you are, in this season of life, with what you’re facing. Love for you. Joy for you. Peace for you. Patience for you. Kindness for you. Goodness for you. Faithfulness for you. Gentleness for you. Self-Control for you. I bet you can identify someone in your life who needs this too, huh? Someone who is lacking joy. Someone lacking peace. Someone living without kindness or faithfulness or self-control. What is happening in their life? Maybe that was you at one time. Or maybe that is a current struggle. Why is that? Scripture is actually quite clear. We don’t have to guess and wonder. When you lack the things that grow in our lives under the direction of the Holy Spirit it’s because you’re NOT under the direction of the Holy Spirit. You’re not connected to Jesus. You’re connected to the world and you’re under the influence of your flesh. We don’t have to hate the person who is without kindness and goodness, we have to see it for what it is. This is a hurting soul who either has never connected to Jesus or has become disconnected. We must love them enough to point them back to Jesus and back to his life-giving connection. Back to the direction of the Holy Spirit. It’s not our responsibility to change them. That’s the job of God’s Holy Spirit. YOU ARE NOT THEIR HOLY SPIRIT. Before we jump into the Fruits of the Spirit and this list of beauty that naturally begins to grow in our lives through connection with Jesus, we have to know about the other side of the list. You see there are two very clear lists. A list of what your life looks like WITHOUT the direction of the Holy Spirit and WITH the direction of the Holy Spirit. If you were to take a piece of paper and draw a line down the center, you would have two columns. On the left you could label that column “Without the Holy Spirit”. On the right you could label that column “With the Holy Spirit”. The column on the left is described in Galatians 5: 19-21. The column on the right is described in Galatians 5: 22-23. Let’s begin with making the list in the left column. Galatians 5: 19-21, When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: • Sexual immorality • Impurity • Lustful pleasures • Idolatry • Sorcery • Hostility • Quarreling • Jealousy • Outbursts of Anger • Selfish Ambition • Dissension • Division • Envy • Drunkenness • Wild Parties • Other Sins Like These Well that was yucky, wasn’t it? Yip, that’s what our lives become without the influence of God’s Holy Spirit. This is what we naturally get ourselves into. Our nature is sinful and leads us into some absolutely yucky things in our lives. Look around … there it is. We can see it in our own life or in the life of someone we love. Why has this happened, why do they act that way, why do they continue to do these things … because as verse 19 says, they have “followed the desires of their sinful nature and the results are very clear.” You’ve been asking why. That’s why, my friend. This is a matter of influence. The wrong influence creates the wrong results. The wrong direction grows the wrong fruit. For anyone with the wrong fruit growing in their lives, this is a matter of the wrong influence coming through the wrong connection. Maybe not a bad person, a bad connection. Have you ever traveled internationally and tried to plug your electrical device into a foreign outlet? It doesn’t fit. If you force it, you’ll blow something up. You could burn the whole building down! Some of us have lives burning down around us because we’ve plugged into the wrong thing. We’re connecting to things we simply weren’t created to be connected to. Over the next few weeks we’re going to do a deep dive on the divinely beautiful things that grow in our lives when we’re connected to Jesus and abiding in him. We’re going to grow in this process. It’s going to be so good for us to see the works of the Holy Spirit that happen so naturally in our connection. But first, we’re going to look at the column on the left. The yuck. The consequences. This is where you life will be without Jesus. Very clearly, this is what happens. Verse 19 in the NLT says “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature …” NIV says, “These are the acts of the flesh …” MSG puts it like this, “It’s obvious what type of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time …” There it is – when we try to do this on our own, when we do what we want, follow our own feelings, focused on self, letting our flesh lead the way, these are the messes we create for ourselves and others. Maybe you’re in one of those messes right now, either self-created or created by someone else. You’re living in that left hand column all while the Holy Spirit is inviting you to jump to the other side of the page and get on the right side. Is that possible? Absolutely! That change can begin today. Looking at our column on the left listed in verses 19-21, there are a few words we may not fully understand. So, let’s not skim over them, let’s understand. The first 3 are all sexual sins: Sexual immorality, Impurity, Lustful pleasures. These are things we all fall into without the direction of God’s Holy Spirit within us. It’s natural. We get all twisted up. We seek love in the wrong places and boy do we find it in all the wrong ways. There, we get stuck in tangled webs and suck others into that web of destruction. The next word on the left side are may be a little more unclear: Idolatry. It’s easy to assume that’s not us, nor is it anyone we love … but often it is. Idolatry is putting anything or anyone above God. Anything that gets God’s place becomes our idol. Anything we value more, anything we trust more, anything we seek first. Our spouses can become our idol. Our jobs can become our idol. Our image, our money, our hobbies can become our idols. And guess what – that happens so naturally in this world. Without the direct influence of the Holy Spirit, we are making stars our guide, we’re allowing horoscopes make our decisions, and putting flawed humans on pedestals thinking they hold our answers. Jesus is calling us back. Back to connection with him. Our lives naturally change when we connect with him. Recognize what is growing in your life – if it’s on the left side realize you’re on the wrong side, connecting to the wrong thing that is threatening to burn your whole life down. Your answer, CONNECT WITH JESUS. Let the Holy Spirit become your guide and influence. In week eight of Above All Else, a series on the heart and the seven deadly sins, Grant Clark explores gluttony. Drawing on Proverbs, John 6, and the unforgettable image of Augustus Gloop tumbling into Willy Wonka's chocolate river, Grant argues that gluttony is not fundamentally about food but about a disordered appetite in the heart that cannot say "enough." He then points us to Jesus, the Bread of Life, as the only one who truly and lastingly satisfies."Gluttony is a third car when one will do, a third drink when one is best, a third hobby when the other two you started aren't satisfying enough. Alcoholics and drug users are gluttons, but so are some web surfers, card players, and businesspeople. In other words, '-aholic' is the suffix attached to the glutton's meal of choice, for gluttony is immoderation, and immoderation is not about having body fat; it's about having a gaunt soul." - Jeff Cook, SevenWhat gluttony is (and isn't):- Gluttony is not simply eating too much; it is any appetite that refuses to say no, not yet, or enough- Thomas Aquinas: gluttons eat "too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, or with too much finicky fussing about... food"- The Desert Fathers: gluttony is not fundamentally about food; it is about the heart. Food simply reveals the deeper issue- Gluttony is about MORE: the pattern that shows up in our spending, our shopping, our screens, our stuffGluttony in our culture:- 26% of Americans spend more than they earn (highest level ever recorded)- 90 million Americans use buy-now-pay-later services; 40% of purchases are regretted within days- People buy 60% more clothing than 15 years ago and wear each item only 7-10 times before discarding it- Global viewers consumed over 2.43 billion hours of YouTube every single day in 2025- Humanity now consumes the equivalent of 1.7 Earths' worth of resources every yearGluttony and the heart - John 6:- The crowd who followed Jesus across the sea came to him not because of who he is, but because of what he gave them: "you are looking for me... because you ate the loaves and were filled"- "They were moved not by full hearts, but by full bellies." - Leon Morris- "The young man who rings the bell at the brothel is unconsciously looking for God." - Bruce Marshall- "The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the table of the world. It is not the X-rated video, but the prime-time dribble of triviality we drink in every night." - John Piper- Jesus's response: "I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again." (John 6:35)From gluttony to self-control - fasting:- Fasting is abstaining from food so that we might pray; when hunger pangs come, we turn to God rather than the fridge- "Fasting reveals the things that control us." - Richard Foster- Dallas Willard: "Very little of our being lies under the direction of our conscious minds and very little of our action runs from our thoughts and consciously chosen intentions. Our mind on its own is an extremely feeble instrument... If we are to be transformed, the body must be transformed."- Fasting disrupts our automatic habits and retrains us to hunger for God, not the table of the world- Challenge: practice 24 hours of fasting this week (sundown to supper), using meal times to pray and read ScriptureVerses referenced:Proverbs 4:23Proverbs 21:17, 20 (CSB)John 6:24-26John 6:27John 6:33-35Philippians 3:18-19Mark 8:34Matthew 6:161 Corinthians 10:31

Paul, Jon, and Liz continue their conversation about Jesus and how he loves. In the podcast, they reference a chart on the four ways Jesus loves that you can view here. "When Jesus sets up a boundary, it's because people want him to do something that, in the world's eyes, would be way more glorious or easy. He'll put up boundaries to keep to his mission that's actually much harder and more painful. The boundaries he sets up keep him on track to not what the world wants, or even what his friends want, but what his Father wants." "We talk sometimes about having our loves rightly ordered, but we also need our fears rightly ordered." "The act of gentle intrusion is fading away. People are so fearful of triggering someone. What keeps them from loving is their risk assessment, with the result that people's lives are narrowing around the self."

The 5D Academy with Zarathustra explores universal wisdom to foster total freedom from suffering in all areas of your life; health, wealth, love, and self. Each Academy podcast contains valuable insights and takeaways to become the best version of yourself and create an authentic, fulfilling life. Zarathustra transmits 5th Dimensional Quantum frequencies in each episode with transformational tools while discussing different topics to help you maintain this new frequency in your daily life. Zarathustra has created a practical system of transmitting the truth to his audience allowing transformation and freedom from suffering. Spiritual development requires an open heart. It is virtually impossible for a seeker to advance to higher consciousness if they don't love themselves. The belief system which has been ingrained in our cellular memory from childhood that we are not good enough results in a conditioned mind. The conditioned mind holds the false belief that there is something missing in our lives, that we are incomplete, that we need to gain something in order to become happy and whole, which is not true. After a life time of searching, Zarathustra has blended a practical system of Eastern and Western methods and techniques to help the Academy members to free themselves from anxiety, negative thoughts, lack of self-love and self-acceptance and destructive emotional patterns through a systematic way to raise your vibration to 5D Vibrational Frequency, which enables you to live a vibrant life of freedom and happiness. The Key Elements To Freedom: Zarathustra recognizes continuity and consistency are the key elements to freedom. In order to help you achieve your spiritual goals, it's best to have a highly effective spiritual practice, free of dogmas, false beliefs and superstition that helps you raise your vibration to 5D Vibrational Frequency as well as the ability to maintain this newly found higher level of consciousness. This translates to a life filled with inner peace, self-love and happiness which is the goal of every spiritual seeker. New knowledge and benefits are gained with each replay. Action with self-control under the Spirit's guidance. Transcript
Do adults have a right to decide what goes into their own bodies, even when experts believe they're making a mistake?Jessica Flanigan returns to defend a radical idea: competent adults should have the freedom to access pharmaceuticals without needing permission from doctors or government regulators. Flanigan argues that the same principles underlying informed consent also support a right to self-medicate.The conversation explores medical paternalism through debates over prescription requirements, addiction, public health, gender-affirming care, and assisted dying. We scrutinize the limits of state authority and whether doctors are ever truly better judges of our interests than we are ourselves.Chapters:[00:00] Introduction to Jessica Flanigan[00:21] The Case for Pharmaceutical Freedom[04:08] Medical Paternalism and Informed Consent[07:06] Are Doctors Better Judges of Our Interests?[14:33] When Is Paternalism Justified?[17:27] Addiction, Autonomy, and Self-Control[21:43] Socialized Healthcare and Personal Risk[28:06] Third-Party Harms: Antibiotics and Public Health[34:22] Vaccine Mandates and Individual Liberty[38:37] Adderall, Neuroenhancement, and Fairness[43:51] Gender-Affirming Care and Medical Autonomy[57:20] The Right to Die and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID)[01:01:33] Closing ThoughtsSubscribe on Substack: https://braininavat.substack.com/

When the Bible uses the word 'grace' to describe how God deals with our sin, what does that really mean? In "Self-Control" Pastor John describes how we should view God's grace and how that doesn't include using it as a license to continue in our former ways.Support the show
We may wish maturity came instantly, but the truth is simple: growth takes work—and it requires patience, persistence, and sacrifice. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef compares spiritual formation to athletic training: no champion wins by coasting, and no believer grows into Christlikeness without intentional discipline. Paul described his own commitment clearly—he refused to run aimlessly or fight without purpose. Instead, he practiced self-control so he would not be disqualified from the prize (1 Corinthians 9:26–27). Dr. Youssef warns that when we stop stretching, we don't stay neutral—we stagnate. And when we choose deliberate disobedience, it reveals pride. But choosing obedience is the mark of humility, and God promises real fruit from that posture—riches, honor, and life (Proverbs 22:4). This devotional also reassures you that submission is not weakness. When you humble yourself under God's mighty hand, He will lift you up in His timing—and you can cast every anxiety on Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:6–7). As you trust His plan, even when it seems impossible, God will grow you to heights only He knew you could reach. Prayer: Lord, help me resist the temptation to do what looks easiest and instead always obey Your voice. Strengthen me that I may fulfill Your work. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:38). Learn more in Dr. Michael A. Youssef's sermon series Joseph: Portrait of a Winner: LISTEN NOW The voice you hear on the MY Devotional podcast is digitally generated with Dr. Youssef's permission. If today's devotional stirred a question, burden, or need for prayer, you don't have to walk through it alone.

Professor Michael Casey on Playful Learning, Trust, Breath, and Real-World Jiu-Jitsu Host Pete Deeley interviews Professor Michael Casey on why jiu-jitsu learning should start relaxed and playful, noting that fun and visible improvement keep both kids and adults training. Casey describes how he introduced his son Declan through play, community support, and avoiding "nagging dad" behavior, later adding hands-on coaching and emphasizing position before submission. They discuss building trust in a gym, safety culture, and how breathing and conscious pauses expand the space between emotion and reaction, improving self-control and maturity. Casey contrasts sport and self-defense approaches, arguing honesty about goals matters and that positional control often outweighs submissions in real-world contexts like healthcare or law enforcement. He critiques "flip the switch" self-defense claims, discourages enforcing gym culture by beating up "jerks," and advises older beginners to shop for supportive communities and advocate for themselves. 00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro 01:34 Playful Learning in Jiu Jitsu 03:49 Kids vs Adults Training Paths 06:17 Raising a Jiu Jitsu Kid 19:13 Position Before Submission 25:40 Emotions and Self Control 31:54 Breath as a Training Tool 35:52 Teaching Self Defense Framework 39:47 Mapping Fight Feelings 40:29 Fear Isn't Weakness 42:09 Rational vs Irrational Fear 44:29 Incremental Safety and Trust 48:19 Instructor Builds Support 52:35 Relaxation as a Symptom 55:05 Lessons Off the Mats 01:06:30 Commit Without Attachment 01:14:43 Resilience Through Failure 01:19:27 Jiu-Jitsu Then vs Now 01:22:02 Street Ready Jiu Jitsu 01:22:36 Sport Vs Self Defense 01:23:11 Honesty In Training 01:25:18 Why The Grind Matters 01:27:54 Jiu Jitsu As Lifestyle 01:31:21 Preserve Or Evolve 01:32:29 Culture Bowing And Gis 01:35:35 Innovation With Relson Rickson 01:45:25 Finding Your Right School 01:47:48 Starting At 55 01:49:50 Shopping Schools Smart 01:53:53 Responsibility Teaching Violence 01:56:04 Gym Enforcers And Jerks 01:57:10 When Violence Backfires 01:57:52 Reforming the Rough Student 01:59:01 Ego vs Instructor Duty 02:00:05 Helsan Beach Fight Story 02:01:20 Rickson vs Relson Street Logic 02:06:04 Gracie Culture and Upbringing 02:09:12 Training Deescalation Scripts 02:16:27 Snowstorm Deescalation Win 02:17:59 Protecting Your Daughter 02:23:57 Wrap Up and Training Connections

In this sermon, Pastor Rick teaches that real freedom is not doing whatever we want, but living the life God designed through self-control, purpose, fruitfulness, and continual progress. Drawing from God’s original design for humanity and Jesus’ call to discipleship, he challenges believers to take responsibility for their lives, overcome what keeps them stuck, and build a future that lasts according to God’s plan.

Continuing our series called Juicy Fruit, Pastor Adam teaches on self-control.
A screaming, fist-swinging baby who wants the whole world to know he's unhappy — it's a picture that's easy to laugh at, until we recognize ourselves in it. In this honest and relatable episode, Vivian Bricker reflects on how many of us feel that same urge to cry, kick, and lash out — and how the fruit of self-control is one of the hardest, most necessary gifts the Holy Spirit grows in us. From childhood tantrums to adult struggles with anger, impulse spending, peer pressure, and addiction, the battle for self-control is one every believer knows well. Vivian shares the story of a friend whose struggle to say "no" to alcohol grew quietly and steadily until it became something he could no longer manage on his own — and whose eventual freedom came not through willpower, but through the work of God and the Holy Spirit's cultivation of egkrateia: Spirit-enabled mastery over desires, impulses, and habits so that they serve rather than rule us. That same Spirit is available to every one of us today. Self-control is the last fruit listed in Galatians 5:22-23 — but it may be the one we need to pray for most urgently. The road is long, but God walks every step of it with us. Today's Bible Verse "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." — Galatians 5:22-23, NIV Ponder Today Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit, not a product of willpower. You cannot manufacture it through discipline alone. It is cultivated by the Holy Spirit working in and through you — which means the starting point is always surrender, not striving. The Greek word egkrateia reframes everything. Self-control is not white-knuckled restraint — it is Spirit-enabled mastery of desires, impulses, and habits so that they serve rather than rule you. That changes how we pray for it. Walking in the flesh leaves us empty; walking in the Spirit brings life. Whatever area of self-control you're struggling with today, the path toward freedom runs through the Holy Spirit — not around Him. A Prayer for You Today Dear Holy Spirit, I confess that I do not do well with self-control. I get angry over small things, give in to impulses, and struggle to master the desires of the flesh. Please help me begin cultivating self-control today. Bless me with the ability to have mastery over my desires, impulses, and habits. The only thing that truly brings me joy is walking in alignment with You — and I trust that You can produce in me what I cannot produce in myself. In Jesus' name, Amen. Don't Miss an Episode If today's prayer stirred a desire to walk in greater freedom and self-mastery, we'd love to stay connected. Zachary Wagner, author of "Men of Virtue," shares about the great outline that Galatians 5 provides for Christians and the willingness to embrace suffering and even weakness, seeing how Jesus modeled this perfectly. What if the fire you've been trying to manage… is actually meant to be mastered? In this powerful episode of The VIBE , we dive deep into the tension between humility and self-control—and how together they produce a fire that can either refine your life or consume it depending on how you handle it. Inspired by Proverbs 30, we explore a rare picture of humility in action, and uncover the practical tools that turn inner awareness into disciplined living.Humility is the thought process.Self-control is the action. And together, they create a fire that doesn't destroy—it transforms. We break down how this fire shows up in leadership, relationships, creativity, and personal growth, and why most people don't fail because they lack passion—but because they lack structure around it.This is where the Inchstones concept comes alive:Not massive leaps. Not overwhelming change. But small, intentional steps that build a life of consistency, clarity, and control over time. Inch by inch, your fire becomes focused. We also explore The VIBE Method™ as a practical framework:Heart (Beliefs): What you believe about yourself determines how you carry your fireMind (Intentions): What you choose to focus on shapes the temperature of your lifeSkills (Actions): What you practice daily becomes the discipline that holds it all togetherThis episode challenges you to stop asking, “How do I get more fire?”And start asking, “Can I handle the fire I already have?”If you've ever felt driven but undisciplined, passionate but scattered, or called but inconsistent—this conversation will reframe everything.
