Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

We all have a problem with self-control. You can't be circumspect without coming to the end of a day and looking back and saying, “Why did I say that? Why did I follow that impulse?”  The Greek word used here for self-control translates to self-command. It's a synonym for being free, because if you're not self-controlled, then you're out of control. If you're out of control, then you're a slave to some other forces.  Paul knew a lot about self-discipline and self-control, and here's what he tells us: 1) what it is, 2) how it's born in you, and 3) how it can grow. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 30, 2010. Series: The Real Signs of the Spirit. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:23-10:13. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. What is gluttony really? If you’ve ever worried about overeating, obsessing about food, or wondered whether enjoying that extra slice of cake is a spiritual failure, this episode is for you. Best-selling author and host Heather Creekmore dives deep into the true heart behind gluttony—exploring why our modern definitions miss the mark and how diet culture and church culture have distorted our understanding. Heather reframes gluttony, drawing on biblical insight, church history, and thought-provoking examples from C.S. Lewis and Tim Keller. She challenges the idea that gluttony is simply about having seconds or what’s on your plate and asks powerful questions about cravings, control, and where we derive our satisfaction. Plus, Heather explores how misplaced fears about food can keep us stuck and why true freedom comes from surrender—not self-denial. Whether food has become a source of stress or you’re striving for perfect control, this conversation will open your eyes to new ways of understanding your desires and finding satisfaction. Ready to rethink gluttony and experience food freedom? Listen now for practical encouragement, spiritual wisdom, and a fresh take you won’t want to miss! This powerful message brings us to the culmination of the fruit of the Spirit series with a deep dive into self-control—perhaps the most challenging fruit for us to cultivate. Drawing from Galatians 5 and Romans 7, we're reminded that everyone produces fruit in their lives, but the critical question is: what type? The sermon confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: self-control isn't about having a stronger will, but about submitting our will to God's.  Notes for this Sermon:  https://lifechurchww.cls.co/dRPT  Website | https://lifechurchww.com Facebook | https://facebook.com/lifechurchww     Instagram | https://instagram.com/lifechurchww     Vida Music | https://vidamsc.com

Speaker: Pastor Tom VanAntwerp, Wilmington Campus Pastor Series: Cultivate – The Fruit of the Spirit-Filled Life Text: Romans 7:18–25, Galatians 5:22–23, Romans 8:5–6, Matthew 27:51 Self-control is one of the most misunderstood fruits of the Spirit. It sounds like something we produce through sheer effort — but Scripture tells a very different story. In this message, Pastor Tom VanAntwerp explores the tension Paul exposes in Romans 7, the paradox of enkrateia (inner strength), and the cultural swing between self-indulgence and extreme self-discipline. Through biblical insight, spiritual formation wisdom, and memorable images (including Odysseus, the Sirens, and a better song), Pastor Tom shows us: Self-control isn't willpower. Self-control comes from giving the Spirit control. This Cultivate series finale invites us to open more of our inner lives to God's Spirit — the One who rearranges our desires, grows all the fruit together, and leads us into a life with God.

In a world full of fake smiles, quick tempers, and shallow love, we are all producing something. Every word, every choice, every action plants a seed in someone else's life—either life-giving or toxic. And everywhere we look, we see the results of a world disconnected from God: anger boiling over, families fracturing, violence becoming routine, and hearts growing numb.   But what if that isn't the only option? What if God's Spirit could grow something different in us—something that doesn't match the chaos around us? Love when hate is easier. Joy when life is heavy. Peace in the middle of the storm. Patience when everyone else snaps. A kind of strength and goodness that isn't manufactured by willpower, but produced by the Spirit of God working within us.   That's the tension. Left unchecked, rot will take over. But if something greater takes root, it could change everything—not just in you, but in your family, your relationships, even your city. The question for you is… which fruit is growing? Today on Karl and Crew, we had Alex Nsengimana join us to share with us about Operation Christmas Child, a ministry through Samaritan’s Purse that provides children with simple shoebox gifts and the love of Christ. He also shared how the ministry impacted his life as a child while he was in an orphanage after escaping a gunman and losing his family. Alex currently serves with Operation Christmas Child, paying forward the hope and love he received through a shoebox gift. We also turned to the phone lines and texts to ask our listeners the question, “What have you discovered about the character of God that you didn’t get at first, but now you understand?” Then we had Drew Dyck join us to discuss how to navigate a midlife crisis in the context of faith. Drew is an acquisitions editor with Moody Publishers and a contributing editor for Christianity Today for Pastors. He has also authored several books, including “Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science.” You can listen to the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Twisted Passions: Should we Preach Against Homosexuality?

Ryan launches a multi-part series, Twisted Passions, addressing homosexuality and same-sex attraction from a biblical framework. He establishes why pastors should clearly preach what Scripture says while also equipping the church to counsel and care for strugglers, and he outlines upcoming topics: Is this sin “different,” are people “born this way,” and how do we raise kids in a sexualized culture? The aim is clarity, compassion, and confident hope in Christ for real victory.Topics DiscussedWhy churches must preach plainly on homosexuality (OT & NT texts)Common progressive rebuttals and why they don't hold up biblically (e.g., “love = affirmation,” misuse of John 8)Word study: ἀρσενοκοίτης and Paul's clarity in 1 Cor 6 / 1 Tim 1Beyond the pulpit: moving from denunciation to discipleship and counseling in the local churchShepherding kids in a perverted culture; building a proactive family planInviting listener questions/testimonies for future episodesKey TakeawaysScripture speaks clearly; pastors should, too—without hatred or compromise.“Love the sinner; hate the sin” isn't a cliché—Jesus says, “Go and sin no more.”Paul's terminology intentionally names male-with-male practice; it isn't vague.Churches must pair clear preaching with hands-on help for real people.Parents need an intentional, early plan to disciple children amid cultural lies.Ready to download the Cord App? Allie dismantles “feminist” smears on X over her Turning Point LSU speech, boldly affirming women's biblical roles: prioritizing home, submitting in marriage, serving in church, and speaking truth publicly.
