Are you a serial snacker? Is there ALWAYS room for dessert? Do you find yourself feeling hungry throughout the day, despite just eating? Or maybe you notice reaching for a bag of chips whenever you're feeling stressed? Did you know that there are actually different types of hunger that can shape our eating habits? Spoiler: You're NOT broken!Welcome to Salad with a Side of Fries, the podcast where we dig into the surprising truths about how we eat and why. Today, host and health coach Jenn Trepeck is tackling a topic that's far more complex than it seems: hunger. We're going to explore the fascinating world of hedonic hunger, the kind driven by pure pleasure, and how it can often override our natural homeostatic hunger, that biological signal that tells us we actually need fuel. We'll also explore how processed foods significantly impact our hunger signals and strategies for managing each type. Get ready to rethink everything you thought you knew about your cravings and your plate, because by the end of this episode, you'll have a whole new understanding of what it means to truly be hungry. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss in real life, clearing up myths, misinformation, and bad science surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Hedonic hunger, driven by dopamine, can override the biological drive of homeostatic hunger(06:48) Hunger is not a moral failing, and how to identify homeostatic hunger(12:01) Cravings versus hunger, and studies show high nutrient density diets reduce hunger pains and cravings(16:58) Is it hunger, or is it restriction, and hedonic hunger involves eating for pleasure, triggered by ultra-processed foods or stress(22:47) Controlling hedonic hunger(27:35) Emotional hunger is eating to cope with emotions, and recognizing emotional eating is key to managing it(33:50) Conditioned hunger is defined as a learned response to stimuli or situations(37:55) Hidden hunger is defined as cellular micronutrient deficiency, often from processed foods(43:00) Toxic hunger is defined as discomfort from processed food toxins(47:34) Nutrient-dense, whole foods emphasized as key to balancing all hunger typesKEY TAKEAWAYS:Hunger is multifaceted and often extends beyond the need for energy. There are several types of hunger—hedonic, emotional, conditioned, hidden, and toxic—that are distinct from basic physiological (homeostatic) hunger. This indicates that a complex interplay of pleasure can drive eating, emotions, learned responses, and even cellular deficiencies or toxic exposures, rather than just an empty stomach.Understanding the various drivers of hunger is crucial for managing eating behaviors effectively. Recognizing whether hunger is due to a biological need, an emotional state, a learned trigger, or even a cellular deficiency allows individuals to address the root cause more effectively. For example, emotional eating requires different strategies than homeostatic hunger.Food quality has a significant impact on hunger and overall well-being. Eating Nutrient-dense foods can reduce true hunger pains and cravings, while processed foods contribute to "hidden" and "toxic" hunger due to nutrient deficiencies and the presence of toxins. This underscores the importance of whole, unprocessed foods not just for satiety, but also for preventing various forms of discomfort and health issues often mistaken for hunger.QUOTES: (07:13) "The body only has so many ways to communicate with us." - Jenn Trepeck(14:21) “Eating nutrient-dense foods minimizes hunger pains." - Jenn Trepeck(21:06) “Hedonic hunger is when people get into that shame and blame and beat themselves up.” - Jenn Trepeck(31:12) “One of the best questions my therapist ever asked me was, where am I not being fed?" - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: HungerThe Bulls-Eye of Change

In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

Is Your Life Driven by Anxiety, or Do You Walk with the Holy Spirit Who Is Working Out God's Purpose in Your Life? MESSAGE SUMMARY: Where is God's involvement in your life? God's “life interventions”, in your life, can provide either a success or a setback. For example, we lose a job; or we get a job. God can turn our world upside down. It is not that we have done anything wrong; it is the Holy Spirit working out God's purpose in your life. We need to hear what the Angels said in Mathew 1:20: “an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.'”; and we need to hear what Jesus said in Mathew 6:34: “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”. If we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in all aspects and seasons of our lives, we can see the birthing of another miracle in our lives.     TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Procrastination. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Self-Control. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). To Become Jesus Followers: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Every time you lie or cheat or lust or get stoned, you put a barrier between yourself and God because God is Holy. God's Holiness prevents Him from communing with sinners. The author of 1 John tells us in 1 John 3:8: “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.". God brought Jesus, who was both God and man, to live on earth. Therefore, Jesus' blood sacrifice on the cross permitted Him to take on your sins. By His sacrifice, Jesus became the doorway for your personal relationship with God and a path for your Salvation from your sins (1 John 1:9-10): “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.".   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, everything in me resists following you into the garden of Gethsemane to fall on my face to the ground before you. Grant me the courage to follow you all the way to the cross, whatever that might mean for my life. And then, by your grace, lead me to resurrection life and power. In Jesus' name, amen.   Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 100). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. Zarathustra transmits 5th Dimensional Quantum frequencies in each episode with transformational tools while discussing different topics to help you maintain this new frequency in your daily life.Zarathustra has created a practical system of transmitting the truth to his audience allowing transformation and freedom from suffering. Spiritual development requires an open heart. It is virtually impossible for a seeker to advance to higher consciousness if they don't love themselves. The belief system which has been ingrained in our cellular memory from childhood that we are not good enough results in a conditioned mind. The conditioned mind holds the false belief that there is something missing in our lives, that we are incomplete, that we need to gain something in order to become happy and whole, which is not true. After a life time of searching, Zarathustra has blended a practical system of Eastern and Western methods and techniques to help the Academy members to free themselves from anxiety, negative thoughts, lack of self-love and self-acceptance and destructive emotional patterns through a systematic way to raise your vibration to 5D Vibrational Frequency, which enables you to live a vibrant life of freedom and happiness. The Key Elements To Freedom:Zarathustra recognizes continuity and consistency are the key elements to freedom. In order to help you achieve your spiritual goals, it's best to have a highly effective spiritual practice, free of dogmas, false beliefs and superstition that helps you raise your vibration to 5D Vibrational Frequency as well as the ability to maintain this newly found higher level of consciousness. This translates to a life filled with inner peace, self-love and happiness which is the goal of every spiritual seeker.New knowledge and benefits are gained with each replay.
