Ed Solomon began his career in college as a joke writer, stand-up comedian, and playwright. While still in college, he was a staff writer for Laverne & Shirley – making him (at the time) the youngest member of the Writers Guild of America. He then spent three years writing the cult Showtime TV series, It's Garry Shandling's Show, before venturing into feature films in the 1980s. He helped create and co-write the critically acclaimed comedies Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (with Chris Matheson). Solomon also worked on a number of hit franchise films, including Men in Black, Charlie's Angels, and then writing the Now You See Me films. Solomon worked on an early version of a Universal The Invisible Man remake, with Johnny Depp. In March 2016 he completed production on Mosaic, a 12-hour long-form TV project for HBO in collaboration with director Steven Soderbergh, This production would mark the first in a series of collaborations with Soderbergh, including the neo-noir film No Sudden Move in 2021, and more recently, the crime series Full Circle, which premiered July 13, 2023. @ed_solomon twitter.com/ed_solomon https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004412/ Connect with your host Kaia Alexander: https://entertainmentbusinessleague.com/ https://twitter.com/thisiskaia Produced by Stuart W. https://www.tangoti.com/ (There Are No Girls on The Internet) is an award-winning podcast about people who have always been at the forefront of technology, but whose stories are often ignored or misrepresented. That's a big and sometimes contentious field, and TANGOTI host Bridget Todd says it's important to make space for everyone to work through difficult conversations about inclusion, rather than expecting everyone to "get it" right away. "I've been in social change movements for a long time and I do think we have this expectation that we expect people to show up with the right ethos and the right language and the right perspective," Bridget says. "And I get that, but I also feel like it doesn't leave room to hear the messy conversations of how people become smarter, better, more nuanced, and more thoughtful." Today on Follow Friday, she explains how to use social media when disinformation is circulating after a tragedy, how she has evolved her thinking about politics online, why she's optimistic about a new online platform for the first time in a while, and much more. She also shares four great follow recommendations: Early podcaster and co-host of https://uhhyeahdude.com/ (Uhh Yeah Dude) Jonathan Larroquette (@jonathanlarroquette on Instagram); political pundit and former The View co-host Meaghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain on https://twitter.com/MeghanMcCain (Twitter) and https://www.instagram.com/meghanmccain/ (Instagram)); comedy writer and Showtime TV star Ziwe (https://twitter.com/ziwe (@Ziwe) on Twitter); and Somewhere Good CEO Naj Austin (https://www.instagram.com/najaustin/ (@najaustin) on Instagram and https://twitter.com/najjmahal (@najjmahal) on Twitter). Follow us on Twitter and support us on Patreon. For our second review, we discuss the Showtime TV movie DC 9/11: Time of Crisis (2003). An unwatchable docudrama cum hagiography, which accentuates the role of George W. Bush in setting policy and introduces the viewer to the basics of the Wolfowitz Doctrine. It spars the arguments for invading Iraq and confronting former client Saddam Hussein. We spent over two hours suffering through this to deliver only the most nauseating parts on this week's episode. Michael James Scott is an actor and singer who originated the role of Genie in the Australian production of Disney's musical Aladdin, which opened in Sydney in August 2016. He received a Helpmann Award in 2017 for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his work in this production. Michael reprised his role as the Genie on the North American tour, The West End, and most recently, Broadway (where he will return when theaters reopen). He also originated the role of The Minstrel on Broadway in Something Rotten!, as well as Dr. Gostwana in the original Broadway company of The Book of Mormon. Other Broadway credits include Mamma Mia, Tarzan, All Shook Up, The Pirate Queen, Elf, and Hair. Off-Broadway, he co-starred in Here’s to the Public! opposite Donna McKechnie and was also part of the concert cast of Jerry Springer: The Opera at Carnegie Hall. Michael can be seen in the new Showtime TV series Black Monday, and recently released his first studio album, A Fierce Christmas, available now on all music platforms. Michael was born in Baltimore, MD, but moved to Orlando, FL with his family when he was five years old. As a child he “just wanted to sing and dance” no matter where he was - the grocery store, the doctors office, etc, and according to his mom, Michael sang before he spoke. Recognizing his creative energy and talent, one of Michael’s elementary school teachers helped guide him towards the world of auditioning for TV and commercials, and participating in children's singing groups, and he “was hooked”. Michael later earned his BFA from The Conservatory of Theatre Arts program at Webster University in St. Louis, MO; and while in college, he went on to be the standby for Ben Vereen on the international tour of Fosse. While Michael might now be well known for his role as the Genie, in our conversation he admits that the role was never even on his radar. He opens up about the preconceived notions that came along with the role, the pressure - and shares that once the creative team behind Aladdin gave him permission to just be himself, he was able to bring his inner singing and dancing child from youth onto the stage with him. Michael also talks to us about the inspiration behind his brand new debut studio album, A Fierce Christmas, which is out now. Citing the current pandemic, as well as the “racial awakening” in the country, Michael says of his album, “this was my protest… I’m gonna protest with joy.” In this episode, we talk about: The year 2020 being the year of the “pivot” The impact of the theater community on society as a whole Having parents who just said “yes” The inspiration behind and production of his album, A Fierce Christmas His “Ah ha” moment while playing the Genie The advice Ben Vereen once gave him Connect with MJS: Get his album and visit him online: https://www.michaeljamesscott.com/ Twitter: @iammjscott Instagram: @iammjscott Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. EP35: Today's guest is Sunny Megatron, an expert in the sexuality and relationship field. She's one of the most recognized sexologists in North America, host and executive producer of a Showtime TV series, founder of the American Sex podcast, and has been recognized by Cosmo, Playboy, Buzzfeed, Playgirl Magazine for her work. The story on how she managed to find her grand purpose and calling has been a tough road and is nothing but heartbreaks and abuse. It started when she lost her job of 17 years due to recession, followed by a break up of a long term relationship from an abusive partner. Those challenges opened her eyes to the taboo subjects that everybody seem to avoid and be uncomfortable talking about, which led her to follow her true calling and pursue an unusual path as both an explorer and educator, opening up candid conversations about sex. This interview is unlike any other I've done, because it exposes a very unusual career, but it definitely fits the bill as a Not Your Average Lives story. It may be uncomfortable for some due to the taboo nature of sex in this country - I know I was quite a bit squirmy in my seat while talking to her, not knowing where the conversation was going to go! But it goes to show you that any career is possible. If it's a topic that fascinates you, figure out how to make it into something you can do every day! Russell Hornsby is known for his roles as Edward "Eddie" Sutton on ABC Family's "Lincoln Heights," as Luke on the HBO drama "In Treatment," as Lyons in the movie "Fences" and as Carl Gatewood in the Showtime TV series "The Affair." At the time of this interview, he was starring as Detective Hank Griffin on the NBC critical acclaimed series "Grimm." Tune in to this rebroadcast interview with actor Russell Hornsby at 1pm ET on https://www.blogtalkradio.com/tammyjones-gibbs/2020/03/06/rebroadcast-actor-russell-hornsby and don't forget to check him out on his new NBC series "Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt For The Bone Collector." From 2004 to 2009, the Showtime TV drama The L Word examined the lives of a group of queer women in L.A. The show was uneven, but it also marked an important milestone for queer representation on television. Now, the series has a sequel called The L Word: Generation Q. It's moved to a different L.A. neighborhood, it's added a diverse cast of new young stars, and it catches us up on the lives of Bette, Alice, and Shane, among others.

Kris Fair caught his first glimpse of a gay relationship watching "Queer as Folk" through his family's home TV. It was the early 2000s and Fair, then a student at Linganore High School, didn't know anyone who was "out" as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ): none of his classmates, his teachers or community members. Fair himself was unsure of his sexual orientation; he thought he liked men, but was somewhat convinced by the systemic mantra that it was "just a phase." A chance perusal through the Sunday night TV options led him to the Showtime TV series, which he could only view through a scrambled picture because his family did not subscribe to that channel. Fast forward almost two decades, and Fair's then-concealed and uncertain identity as a gay man has become an integral part of his life and advocacy for LGBTQ rights, including as president of the board of directors for The Frederick Center. On the latest episode of Frederick Uncut, Fair sat down with host Colin McGuire and News-Post reporter Nancy Lavin to detail the journey of acceptance, both personally and community-wide, that has occurred with regard to the LGBTQ community. Among the many signs of progress is the expansion of Frederick Pride, which will hold its 7th annual event Saturday in downtown Frederick. What began as a small community picnic in Ballenger Creek — not even titled a "Pride" event to avoid some controversy, according to Fair — has blossomed into a full celebration along Carroll Creek Linear Park. Fair also shares his own "coming out" story, reflections on his recent bid for political office, and his favorite TV show ... which, surprisingly, is not "Queer as Folk."
Playwright David Henry Hwang and composer Jeanine Tesori discuss their latest project, an original musical titled “Soft Power,” at the Curran Theatre June 20-July 8, 2018, with host Richard Wolinsky. “Soft Power” starts with a play and turns into a musical, about a reverse “King and I” created in China and produced fifty years in the future, concerning the relationship between a Chinese envoy and Hillary Clinton, which brings up questions regarding cultural appropriation and what is called “soft power,” the power of culture to influence society. David Henry Hwang is a Tony winning playwright, the author of, among other works, “M. Butterfly”, “Chinglish” and “Yellow Face,” along with a recently reworked “Flower Drum Song.” He is also on the writing staff of the Showtime TV show “The Affair.” Jeanine Tesori is a Tony winning composer. Among her works are “Caroline, or Change,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Violet” (to be seen in a Bay Area Musicals production next season) and “Fun Home.” Curran theatre website The post Interview: David Henry Hwang & Jeanine Tesori, “Soft Power” at the Curran appeared first on KPFA.
