Is it possible - merely possible - that Ringo Starr's 1973 album, “Ringo” is the best solo Beatles album of that incredible year of classic solo Beatles albums? And while we're at it, does Ringo's 1978 entry “Bad Boy” still run circles - from a sheer rock & roll perspective - around the flaccid, weak-ass “Some Girls”? To be discussed on our final episode, stay tuned! Because, today's episode is dedicated to 50 years of the closest thing to a Beatles reunion album this side of the Threetles, and maybe even The Ladders. Tony and T.J., with a little help from our friends, Producer Casey and P3Z-Nutz, deep dish Side 1 of the greatest album (sorry, Liverpool 8) from the greatest drummer (sorry, Andy White) of the greatest band (sorry, Korn) of all time. All four solo Fabs released legendary albums in their lives. But among the critical darlings (“Gone Troppo”), chart topping smash hits (“Ringo Rama”, 5.1 edition) and absolutely despised, forgotten about, piles of doggie poo poo doo doo (“Band On The Run”), there are some solo albums that remain quite difficult to categorize. Like this week's Deep Dish Part 1 (CALORIE ALERT!) on the ever-controversial John & Yoko “Some Time In New York City”. Is this a terrible record? Is it actually brilliant? Has it aged better than expected in the 50 years since its release? What do you think this is, pal, “Sound Opinions?” Sure, you come here for us to answer those fab questions, but you also may be wondering:

With football season fast approaching, we go back to the 2021 Hispanic Heritage Foundation archives to our Tertulia with the only Latino head coach of the NFL - the head coach of the Washington Commanders, Coach Ron Rivera.Of proud Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, Coach Rivera has been a difference-maker for the Commanders since he took over in 2020. Despite facing challenges like name changes, ownership changes, and quarterback shifts, Coach Rivera has established a culture of determination, resilience, and diversity within the organization. In his first year with the team, Coach Rivera took the Commanders to the playoffs, won the division, and won NFC Coach of the Year - all while surviving his battle with cancer. Before coming to DC, he was the Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers, where he reached the Super Bowl and was a two-time Coach of the Year. Prior to becoming a coach, Rivera attended the University of California, Berkeley in the early 1980s, where he played college football for the Golden Bears and was recognized as an All-American linebacker. Following graduation, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft and was a part of their 1985 team that won Super Bowl XX. Rivera spent nine years playing for the Bears and retired after the 1992 season. In 2021, we honored Coach Rivera with the Hispanic Heritage Sports Award for representing our Latine community in what has become America's game. So, sit back, grab a cafecito, and enjoy this inspiring conversation with Coach Ron Rivera!Episode Resources:- Watch Coach Ron Rivera's 2021 Hispanic Heritage Sports Award Honoree Video here. - Watch our 2021 Tertulia with Coach Rivera on YouTube here.

Adam debates who would qualify for a NFL Mount Rushmore before learning about the creatures he saw wash up on shore outside his house. Comedian Mark Normand joins him as they discuss garbage man arrival times and the death of the phrase “what's the meaning of this?”. They play a round of ‘Mr. Brightside' where Adam helps cheer up a caller who was hit by a drunk driver. Next, Chris reports the news. Hearing about Arnold Schwarzenegger filling up an LA pothole causes Adam to wonder why LA has the worst roads despite the good weather and high taxes people pay. They get into a Florida teacher running a middle school fight club, a 911 dispatcher getting caught sexting officers, and McDonald's testing a fully automated restaurant. Finally, former NFL player and coach, Mike Singletary, joins Adam and Mark and talks about playing for the Chicago Bears, beating the Patriots at Super Bowl XX, playing with William “the Refrigerator” Perry, the future of the Pro Bowl Games, the time the Dolphins ended the Bear's undefeated season, and the origin of “The Super Bowl Shuffle”. Stacey Dales NFL network gets this hour started, She is covering Eagles for the NFL Network. Plus Fridge was going to throw a pass in Super Bowl XX ?
La NFL puede explicarse por medio un montón de lugares comunes: "las defensivas ganan campeonatos", "hay que establecer el juego terrestre", "nunca hay que darse por vencido", etc. Los Bers de 1985 personifican todos esos clichés.
In the final hour, Mike Mulligan and David Haugh took a trip down memory lane by looking back at the Bears' blowout win against the Patriots in Super Bowl XX. Was coach Mike Ditka's role overrated? Could defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan have led the Bears to a Super Bowl win as a head coach?
Vintage Tribune Kori Rumore reminds the Steve Cochran Show how unlucky the Chicago Bears are... They travel back in time to talk about why the '85 Bears didn't get invited to the White House & Disney World after Super Bowl XX, and what caused the Bears to lose the Super Bowl in 2007. Richard Dent grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and went on to pursue his football career at Tennessee State University. After being drafted by the Bears in 1983, he accelerated at his position, defensive end, and had a list of accolades throughout his career. In 2011, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his efforts. In the episode, our hosts, Matt Butkus and Matt Amendola sit down with Richard to talk about his experience as a rookie once he joined the Chicago Bears, Richard being awarded MVP in the 1985 Super Bowl, and his current thoughts and opinions on what the Chicago Bears need to do this off-season. When the Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX, Richard was selected as the game's MVP. He recorded 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a blocked pass in that game. He was also a featured soloist of the “Shuffling Crew” in the Super Bowl Shuffle Video in 1985. This podcast is brought to you by Americaneagle.com Studios. Far Middle episode 85 marks the series start to 2023. As The Far Middle enters its third calendar year, Nick once again connects issues spanning the past, present, and future.Dedicated to the iconic 1985 Chicago Bears, Nick looks back on the epic season of a team that was truly “must-see TV.” While not a dynasty, the Super Bowl XX champs had it all; boasting personalities like Jim McMahon and Walter Payton on offense, the "Monsters of the Midway" on defense, and Coaches Ditka and Ryan on the sideline.Nick moves from the “Windy City” to the hot air blowing from the medical journal, The Lancet, which in a March 2020 editorial made bold proclamations touting China’s success in handling Covid-19.Next, Nick examines a recent editorial by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, titled, “Biden Has the Economy Back on Track.” Nick counters Ms. Yellen’s hollow policy proclamations, in particular her accomplishments on energy being “a key focus of the administration’s work.”Staying on energy and the economy, Nick looks under the hood of Stellantis’ announcement that it would be idling its Belvidere, Illinois, plant that produces Jeep Cherokee SUVs. The company is looking to cut costs, and 1,300 jobs, to invest in electric vehicles. Nick says this is the real-world collateral damage of the energy transition that’s falling upon our middle class and middle America.Shifting gears from the auto industry to power sector, Nick reflects on Siemens Energy and the challenges its renewable business is facing. Nick reiterates the supply chain issues/sourcing for renewable sources, as well as the material required per unit of power derived from sources like wind and solar juxtaposed to sources such as natural gas.Turning to academia, Nick discusses Harvard and Yale’s decision to stop participating in U.S. News & World Report law-school rankings. He says our elite colleges can make quite the hollow pronouncements at times, and so too can the G20 (aka the master of the obvious) who issued a recent declaration stating, “Today’s era must not be of war.”Nick wraps this episode’s policy discussion by highlighting total factor productivity (TFP), a metric that measures how much innovation contributes to growth, particularly economic growth. And as 2023 gets underway, Nick goes back 78 years to 1944 and the Battle of Anzio to demonstrate the lessons and importance of strong leadership. Nick concludes: “If America and the West do not get better leadership, do not drop the ideology and embrace the reality, and if we continue to move sluggishly and inefficiently, we’re going to lose the current confrontation with our adversaries. It’s not Anzio and it’s not bullets yet, but there is a war and its largely being waged economically and via policy. Let’s wake up and win this thing.”
The long, illustrious list of teams the Bears have beaten in the Super Bowl begins and ends with the mighty New England Patriots. But there's so much more to know about them. For instance, why did Matt Millen punch out their general manager on the field after a playoff game? How did the Sullivan family go bankrupt just a year after Super Bowl XX? They sold the team to a guy who sold it in disgrace just three years later, but what savvy guy bought their stadium out from under them in bankruptcy court? Who was James Ornstein and why did he only own the team for two years? What does Bob Kraft like to do to unwind before big playoff games--wait, let's not talk about that. Who almost drafted Tom Brady before the Patriots could get him? Why did Bill Parcells quit after taking them to a Super Bowl and why didn't Bill Belichick take over then? Why am I typing in all questions? We unearth a rare Bears win this series and neither of us could remember that it ever happened. We also re-live the first of two humiliating defeats in the final days of the Marc Trestman era that bookended a bye week. Yikes. We talk about Belichick tying Papa Bear George Halas' all-time wins mark, and Bill nerding out with Ed Reed about what Belichick insists is the greatest play he's ever seen a free safety make. And, we come to the definitive answer on who was more instrumental in the Patriots' dynasty, Belichick or Tom Brady. Plus, why Michigan could never just make Tom their starting quarterback. All that, and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
We're as sick of thinking about Bears-Commanders as you are hearing about it so we keep it brief, outside of bringing you deeeeep inside our tailgate. Monday night football looms and a visit to New England may remind us all of how far we have to go to be relevant in the NFL once again. Dan talks Bill out of pivoting to an all-Illini podcast as the memory of U of I beating down Dan's Gophers still lives fresh in Bill's pea-sized brain. Plus tons more, including curiosity about an old nursery rhyme that seems quite creepy at the moment. Special visits from Rick Feelsmen (live-ish from Switzerland) and Greasetank Frank keeps us all informed about autosports. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zerodoinks/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/zerodoinks/support
Rob and Terry discuss Aaron Judge, the Chicago Bears, fantasy football, how a bill becomes a law, and hero dogs. They also do a Retro Review of Super Bowl 20, and all it's Shufflin' greatness.
Willie Gault is a former football wide receiver and Olympic athlete. Gault played in the NFL for 11 seasons for the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Raiders. He is now the ultimate Texas high school football insider, breaking the majority of coaching changes throughout the state every offseason, and appearing at countless football-related events year-round. His passion for the sport and the people that make it possible is unmatched. His deep ties to the coaching community and knack for spotting teams on the rise make his columns and Twitter account must-follows, whether it's football season or not. EPISODE SUMMARY In professional sports, we have experienced a wide spectrum of clearly memorable nicknames. For example, in baseball, we instantly recognize nicknames like the Babe, Mick, Yogi, and Moose. Moose? Of course, that would be “Moose” Skowron who played for the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox among other teams. But what about pro football? As with baseball, we can often mention one word and it will translate into an image of a well-known player. Try this one: the Refrigerator! We can easily visualize William Perry, the sterling, and rather large, lineman for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears in the 1980s. The Refrigerator was known for his immoveable status in the center of the Bears' defensive line and he also scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl XX victory over the Patriots in January of 1986. So where did Perry earn his infamous nickname? Apparently, while he was a student at Clemson in 1981 Perry was taking his laundry down to the washing machine. When another student had difficulty sliding into the elevator with Perry, the student said: "Man, you're about as big as a refrigerator." The name stuck! WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL BACKGROUND Each episode takes the listener back to the very early days of the National Football League. Author Joe Ziemba will share a forgotten or lost story from one of the NFL's two oldest teams: The Bears and the Cardinals. Team championships, individual exploits, or long-buried items of interest from the earliest years of the NFL will be dusted off and resurrected for the listener. Not for the football faint-of-heart since these programs will document when the struggling Bears nearly went out of business or when Cardinals' players earned $15 a game and were proud of it! Singer/Song Writer Kevin Chalfant, former Patriots Pro Bowl RB Tony Collins, Yale Head Coach Tony Reno, and Steelers Legend Rocky Bleier join us. Kevin Chalfant is the former Lead Singer of the Journey spin-off band The Storm. Kevin is currently touring with The Voices of Rock Radio and took time from that to join us. Kevin is a Chicago native and we get his thoughts on the Bears season, his admiration for Tom Brady, and the Cubs who broke his heart growing up. We also learn about his relationship with several members of Journey and my hope that one day he's fronting the band. Tony Collins shares memories from his experience playing in Super Bowl XX against the Bears plus leads us through our picks for the Super Bowl. Yale Head Coach Tony Reno shares his thoughts on last season and what it will take to win the Ivy League title in '22. We hear his thoughts on the privilege of not only playing for Yale but going to school there as well. We also hear how he recruits athletes with a passion for football who also meet the school's educational qualifications. Finally, we discuss how he teaches his players to represent the University and themselves when they're away from the football field. Rocky Bleier talks about rekindling the Super Bowl memories every year at this time. We hear about the miserable weather conditions when they beat the Houston Oilers in the 1979 AFC Championship. We talk about how the Rams in '79 were actually the first team to have a Super Bowl home game. They played in the LA Colisseum which was 30 minutes from the Rose Bowl, the site of Super Bowl XIV. In that game, the Rams not only had home-field advantage, they also had 3 former Steelers coaches on their staff. Rocky talks about having to face the coaches that knew them. We also hear about the TD he scored in Super Bowl XIII that came on a broken play, plus Bradshaw's disdain for short passes.
This week on It Was a Thing on TV we're going back to school while getting ready for the Super Bowl as we sneak in a game of Wordle. First, it's 2006 and How I Met Your Mother was CBS' sophomore hit featuring 20- and 30-somethings. Why not follow that with a series with people around the same age who all went to school together decades earlier? It can't miss! It did. But at least most of the cast of this show went on to bigger and better things. Next, the game Wordle has taken the internet by storm. Many people don't realize that the game Wordle is similar to the Game Show Network show Lingo. Even fewer people realize that Lingo got its start as a Canadian production in 1987. Also, Greg makes a big declaration at the end of the minisode! Finally, it's time for our annual look at different happenings related to the game. First up is a halftime show so bad and disjointed, Pete Rozelle said he never wanted to see Up With People again. He got his wish and Up With People never did another halftime show after 1986. The 1985 Chicago Bears were larger than life. They had in-your-face personalities. They boasted Hall of Fame-caliber players. But most importantly, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Chicago dominated opponents like few others. The Bears offense was a reflection of their hard-nosed head coach, Mike Ditka. First and foremost, Ditka liked to establish the run, with Walter Payton rushing for 1,551 yards on 324 carries. Still, the coach could be creative, too. He occasionally used a 300-pound rookie named William "Refrigerator" Perry at the goal line, to the delight of teammates and fans alike. Perry was also a part of Chicago's "46 Defense", which is widely considered the best in league history. The scheme -- designed by defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan -- so overwhelmed opponents a world title seemed inevitable. And it was. Chicago lost just one game prior to reaching Super Bowl XX, where it whipped the New England Patriots for their first NFL championship since 1963.
Iona College Radio Hour with Willie O'Ree and Chelsea Cabarcas
He led the Bears to a 15-1 season in 1985. The "46" defense invented by Buddy Ryan allowed Singletary to be unblocked on virtually every play. That season, he recorded 109 solo tackles (52 assists), 3 sacks, 1 interception, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumble, and 10 defended passes. He won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year,[7] and led a defense that was ranked 1st overall (1st against the rush; 3rd against the pass). Throughout the 1985 playoffs, Singletary provided stellar efforts in all 3 games. In the divisional game against the New York Giants at home, Singletary recovered a fumble early in the 1st quarter and a sack of quarterback Phil Simms on a 3rd down early in the 3rd quarter. The Bears went on to win 21–0. In the NFC Championship Game vs. the Los Angeles Rams, Singletary and the Bears dominated again. Coach Mike Ditka said that the day before the game, he was talking to the offense while Singletary was in the next room giving the defense a motivational speech. While it started out quiet, within minutes, Samurai Mike was screaming at the top of his lungs and the defensive players were throwing chairs and knocking over tables. The next day, he provided a memorable play where he stopped Eric Dickerson behind the line of scrimmage on third-and-short early in the 2nd quarter. The Bears would eventually go to win Super Bowl XX by beating the New England Patriots 46–10. In the game, Singletary broke up a pass that would have gone for a touchdown, delivered jarring hits to New England running back Craig James all game, and tied a Super Bowl record with 2 fumble recoveries.
Episode 538 Jim McMahon is a First Class Father and 2x Super Bowl Champion Quarterback. He quarterbacked one of the greatest teams in NFL history, the 1985 Chicago Bears, which dominated the NFL regular season and destroyed the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX. Jim was drafted with the 5th overall pick in the first round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Bears after playing his college football at BYU. He would go on to play for several other NFL teams including the Green Bay Packers who won Super Bowl XXXI with Jim as a backup quarterback. In this Episode, Jim shares his Fatherhood journey which includes four children. He discusses why he taught his kids the fundamentals of sports but was never the coach of any of their teams. He describes his feelings on young kids playing tackle football. He talks about his experience using CBD for his post football injuries. Bears and Beers previews Da Bears wild card playoff matchup vs the Saints. New Orleans was 12-4 this season and is favored by 10 points in this game. For the first time since earlier this season, Brees, Thomas and Kamara will be together. The Bears will be missing Roquan, Mooney and Skrine. Can the offense control the ball again while not turning it over? Can the D eliminate chunk plays? We highlight Abita Brewery and their Bourbon Street line, along with the Jackamo and Wrought Iron IPA. This brewery is much more that Purple Haze! Our stories run through memorable New Orleans/Saints games including Super Bowl XX, the 2006 NFC Title Game, the Zack Miller game and Ditka's Soldier Field pre-season return. Go Bears!
Sunday's game will be the third time the Bears and Saints have met in the playoffs and the Bears have won the first two. You remember the 2007 NFC Championship game and Andy and Mike D. talk about that, but you probably don't remember much about the 1991 Mike Tomczak-Steve Walsh-John Fourcade barage a tois, so we go deep into that one. It's the leftover players from the Super Bowl XX champions mixed with the lovable duds that we rooted for in the '90s against an up and coming Saints team. The game is a little rough, but CBS' broadcast was amazingly entertaining, Mike Ditka wore an awesome jacket, Neal Anderson threw a pass, Bears fans threw snowballs at Saints fans. It was the final Bears home games for Jim Covert, Dan Hampton and Tomczak and fans actually missed two of them when they were gone. We also talk a little bit about our plans for this podcast starting next week when either the Bears season is over or it's Packers Week Three and we've already done them to death. So stay tuned. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
In this episode we look at the 1985 Bears Super Bowl XX victory, and how bittersweet a moment was was for arguably the best running back in the NFL. We dive into the question of ... Is YOUR success more important than the TEAM's success? ... Consider Walter Payton. When the Bears beat the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX "Sweetness" didn't celebrate with his team in the locker room. Instead, Payton locked himself in a broom closet, angry because he didn't have a TD.
Before Tom Brady, and before Drew Bledsoe, the New England Patriots were a hard luck franchise personified by a tough, sometimes overachieving quarterback, whose tenacity and competitiveness endeared him to a beleaguered, but loyal fan base. Join Bernie in welcoming Patriots Hall of Famer, Steve Grogan, to the program to discuss his coming of age in a multi-sport environment in Ottawa, KS, the growing pains he experienced as a two-year starter at Kansas State and the circumstances that led to him grabbing the starting quarterback job as a rookie with the Patriots. You'll hear Steve present the New England side of the controversial 1976 divisional round playoff loss in Oakland* as well as his memories of the team's magical run to Super Bowl XX. Plus: the great John Hannah; underrated Stanley Morgan; the Snow Plow Game, and who Steve picks as the greatest quarterback of all-time. Finally, Steve reflects on the recent success of the Patriots and how it has trickled down to former players and the seemingly endless list of injuries he dealt with during his 16-year career. *for the Oakland side, listen to Phil Villapiano in Episode 22 of GPP
It's Saints week and man do Andy and Mike D. have crap to remember. There's the 2006 NFC Championship Game, which is easily the greatest moment in Bears history since Super Bowl XX (well, that or the time they ruined the Brett Favre jersey retirement by beating the Packers in Lambeau), and there are many more. What do you remember about Leon Johnson? Yes, THAT. They also talk about the Reuschel Brothers and George Brett and Bo Jackson. It fits, you'll see. And, do you remember how involved in the Ricky Williams for the entire Saints draft in 1999 the Bears were? You don't do you? Well, you'll just have to listen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Kevin Butler had a dazzling football career that began at the University of Georgia. He then played for 13 seasons as a place kicker in the NFL from 1985-1998. In his rookie season, he was part of Chicago Bears that won Super Bowl XX. But he always regretted not graduating from the university. And he told his three children, that he'd get his degree "when you are all done." On May 5, 2018, some 33 years after leaving the University of Georgia, he finally made that happen.
