Is AI the latest chapter in our long history of creating an all-knowing God? AI ethicist Christopher DiCarlo certainly suspects it is. In his new book "Building a God: The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and the Race to Control It, DiCarlo argues that we are creating AI systems with godlike capabilities that will eventually exceed all human intelligence through their ability to make unprecedented inferences and connections. Like so many other self-styled ethicists, DiCarlo emphasizes the urgent need to establish ethical guardrails and principles for AI development. He expresses both hope for AI's potential benefits, particularly in medicine, while warning about the risks of losing control of super intelligent systems that might, one day, develop their own ethical frameworks. Given that AI development is currently largely controlled by profit-driven companies and shaped by geopolitical competition rather than ethical considerations, DiCarlo advocates for raising public awareness and establishing robust international oversight bodies (similar to the IAEA for nuclear weapons) to govern AI development. He argues that AI's potential for systemic manipulation and control makes it potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons, as it wouldn't require human intervention for the technology to destroy humanity. Christopher is a Senior Researcher at Convergence Analysis, an AI consultancy. He teaches in the Department of Biology at the University of Toronto and The Life Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University and is a past Visiting Research Scholar at Harvard University. He is the founder of Critical Thinking Solutions, the Ethics Chair for the Canadian Mental Health Association, a lifetime member of Humanist Canada, and an Expert Advisor for the Centre for Inquiry Canada. Christopher has published three books, including an international best-seller. He has won several awards including TV Ontario's Big Ideas Best Lecturer in Ontario Award and Canada's Humanist of the Year.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. About the speaker: Dr. Sandhya Aneja is a researcher, inventor, and computer scientist with a strong passion for teaching. She is an Assistant Professor at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY,and was a Visiting Research Scholar at the Department of Computer Science, Purdue University. She has over 15 years of experience teaching computer science to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Delhi and the University of Brunei.As a researcher, she contributed to developing a mobile application to facilitate the matching of interests on available mobile devices and allow exchanging of messages and files. The application allows broadcasting names and a limited number of keywords representing users' interests without any connection in a nearby region. The broadcasting region creates a mobile wireless network limited by the Wi-Fi region that is around 200 meters. She also received a US Patent on this technology.As a computer scientist, she has received project funding from the University of Delhi as PI and the Universityof Brunei as co-PI. She has extensively worked on Brunei government-funded projects with IBM Researchers. She is also a contributor to Sandia and DARPA-funded projects at Purdue University.

Armin Langer is a DAAD Visiting Assistant Professor at the Center for European Studies. Prior to joining CES, he was a Visiting Research Scholar at Brandeis University's Schusterman Center for Israel Studies in Waltham, MA, a Transatlantic Partnership on Memory & Democracy Fellow at the Center for German Studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and worked for the Center for Jewish Ethics at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, PA. His research interests are migration, identity politics and populism in Europe and the US. He is author of a monograph on German-Jewish integration, co-edited an anthology on Jewish-Muslim entanglements and published several articles in edited volumes and peer-reviewed journals, including the German Studies Review (SSCI, AHCI), Studi Irlandesi. A Journal of Irish Studies (ESCI) and Journal of Jewish Ethics (ESCI). He has received various prizes and grants, such as the Western Jewish Studies Association's Baron Award or the University of Notre Dame's Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism Grant. Armin holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the Humboldt University of Berlin. He also studied philosophy and Jewish studies in Budapest, Jerusalem, Potsdam, and Washington, D.C., and graduated with two M.A.'s and two B.A.'s. He was ordained as a rabbi by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and has had teaching and pulpit positions in Jewish communities in the US, Mexico, Sweden, Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Some support solutions which would aim to reduce police use of force overall while others believe we must begin by holding those officers who use force improperly accountable for their actions. He discusses the consensus building project of the core elites and knowledge network or "empire of the mind," the U.S.-China relationship, how U.S. Empire has viewed China as a great asset to the Western world since the 1950s and how Beijing has emerged as a major power under the auspices of the West. Ruling classes of different countries get together as cartels due to shared interests. Multipolarity is messy but has had a democratizing effect. His book entitled: How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass: A Critical Thinker’s Guide to Asking the Right Questions is currently in its fifth printing and is a best-seller in Canada and the U.S. His latest book: Six Steps to Better Thinking: How to Disagree and Get Along was released by Friesen Press and is available world-wide.   He is a past Visiting Research Scholar at Harvard University in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences: Department of Anthropology and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Here, he conducted research for two major papers entitled The Comparative Brain: The Evolution of Human Reasoning and The Evolution of Religion: Why Many Need to Believe in Deities, Demons, and the Unseen.   He is currently engaged in writing his latest book, So You Think You Can Think? Tools for Intelligent Conversations and Getting Along. ​ In April 2008 he was awarded TV Ontario’s Big Ideas Best Lecturer in Ontario Award. In August 2008 he was honored with the Canadian Humanist of the Year Award from the Humanist Association of Canada. In September 2008 he was awarded the UOIT Complementary Faculty Teaching Award. ​ Dr. DiCarlo is the Principal and Founder of Critical Thinking Solutions, a consulting business for individuals, corporations, and not-for-profits in both the private and public sectors. He is also the developer of the first Pilot Project in Canada to introduce Universal Critical Thinking skills into the Ontario Public High School curriculum which has begun in the Upper Grand District School Board. This has led to other Ontario School Boards adopting Dr. DiCarlo’s Critical Thinking program for their High School curricula.  

This episode of Is This It? features a conversation with Mark Shrime. Mark G. Dr Ziv Bohrer, assistant professor at Bar-Ilan University Faculty of Law, gives a talk for the Public International Law Discussion Group. What international law corpus applies to border-crossing fights between non-State and State forces (transnational conflicts): peacetime-general international law, the Law of International Armed Conflict, the Law of Non-International Armed Conflict, or a new wartime international law altogether? This issue is widely disputed, because transnational conflicts fail to neatly fit into any recognised legal category of collective violence. The 'goofiness' of transnational conflicts is commonly attributed to their novelty. But, nearly two decades already passed since 9/11 (the event marking their rise) without reaching an accepted classification. This classification dispute is not alone. Since the early 2000s, international lawyers have been perpetually debating numerous war-related classifications. Transnational conflicts are considered a primary cause for the present classification crisis: wars of a new kind that is eroding the longstanding distinctions of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The talk questions the historical accuracy of the accepted assumption that the attributes of transnational conflicts are novel and of the related premise that IHL regulation of transnational conflicts is novel. The talk suggests an alternative explanation for the current strong sense of a classification crisis. Bio Dr. Ziv Bohrer is an assistant professor at Bar-Ilan University, Faculty of Law. His main areas of interest are International Criminal Law and International Humanitarian Law. He is currently researching the long (forgotten) pre-WWII history of International Criminal Law. Prior to that he was a Fulbright fellow and a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Michigan (2011-12), and a Research Fellow at the Sacher Institute Sacher Institute for Legislative Research and Comparative Law (2012-13). Ziv received his Ph.D. (2011) and LL.M. (2007) from Tel-Aviv University-Faculty of Law, magna cum laude and his LL.B and B.A. (in psychology) from Haifa University. Irritable Bowel Syndrome http://learntruehealth.com/irritable-bowel-syndrome/ Understanding Irritable Bowel Syndrome Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that is very curable. Most people often experience this because of bad diet, wrong lifestyle and stress. There are conventional medicines to cure irritable bowel syndrome, but my guest, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg, is a staunch advocate of healing IBS through a natural approach. Conventional Background Like a lot of Naturopathic Doctors who came from a Conventional Medicine background, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg is no different. He describes himself as a science-minded student who initially planned to get a Ph.D. degree and become a researcher. Dr. Joshua Goldenberg acquired his undergraduate degree in Biology and Genetics from the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he eventually found work outside Pennsylvania doing molecular work in a laboratory. Soul-searching However, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg wasn’t happy being cooped up in a basement laboratory most of the time. Much as he was fascinated by the science of it all, he felt an intense yearning to do something that allowed him to interact with people. Hence, after deciding not to pursue a Ph.D. degree, he saved enough money and flew to Mexico instead. Travelling around Central America for a year, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg took advantage of this time to figure out what he wanted to do. Ending up in Guatemala, Dr. Goldenberg met this one person who he considered his oracle. He confided in this person that he was passionate about science, but the art was missing. Because of this, that person told him that he should look into going to Bastyr University and become a Naturopath. “I found an internet cafe and researched. It was a marriage of science and the heart,” recalls Dr. Joshua Goldenberg. “So I booked a flight home, and within months after touring several other schools, I did end up studying at Bastyr University.” Career Shift Dr. Joshua Goldenberg admits that the first year at Bastyr University was hard but challenging. After graduating from Bastyr University, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg eventually found work as a Naturopath Doctor at a family practice clinic. During his tenure at the clinic, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg noticed that majority of the patients who were treated for healing their gut health had massive changes. Because the response to natural healing was very positive, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg eventually established his clinic which focused on gut health. Probiotics Research Dr. Joshua Goldenberg is likewise a researcher. His papers primarily focus on evidence-based practice, irritable bowel syndrome, probiotics, and research methodology. “We statistically combine research studies and find the truth. What blew me away was the findings on Pediatric Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea,” said Dr. Joshua Goldenberg. “Twenty percent of kids develop diarrhea. And we studied how to protect the kids’ guts through probiotics. It cuts the risk in half.” He believes that not everyone needs to be taking probiotics since there is a risk to develop blood infection. According to Dr. Joshua Goldenberg, taking probiotics depends on the health situation of the individual. “I saw how powerful natural medicine could be. Personally, I don’t feel we need pills to stay well,” Dr. Goldenberg said. “The goal should be getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, good diet and strengthen spiritual mindset.” Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), is a condition wherein a bacteria stays longer and multiplies in the small intestine. Typically, the stomach muscle and small intestine should be able to push the food from your stomach through the small intestine and into your colon. When this muscle action happens, bacteria are usually swept out of the small intestine. However, when SIBO occurs, we tend to experience symptoms like gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and cramping. There are some health conditions associated with SIBO, one of them being Crohn’s disease. According to studies, 60 to 70% of patients have SIBO, and contrasting studies are looking into whether antibiotics or probiotics should be used as treatment. However, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg says it can be cured naturally. One way is to avoid fermented foods. Other treatments include taking herbal tinctures or supplements and being conscious of what time you eat. FODMAP Diet FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. It is a collection of short-chain carbohydrates found in certain foods that contribute to the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal disorders. A low FODMAP diet is usually recommended to those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. What we eat really does play a big part in healing from IBS naturally. “A low-FODMAP diet comprises specific foods healthy for you. GI doctors are beginning to use it for everything. It is most effective for SIBO and IBS,” said Dr. Joshua Goldenberg. “It is also used for many GI complaints. It is a hard diet to do, and it is best to do it with the guidance of a medical professional.” Ongoing Research And Training Researching more about irritable bowel syndrome and gut health is Dr. Joshua Goldenberg’s biggest passion. He believes there’s a massive amount of medical research out there. Hence, it is difficult for doctors to stay updated with the latest stuff. Consequently, educating health care providers, coaches and doctors is the primary reason why Dr. Joshua Goldenberg put up his website. He says his site aims to serve as a vehicle for medical professionals, coaches and healthcare practitioners stay up to date on the best available research. Furthermore, Dr. Joshua Goldenberg says that a lot of research done by outstanding scientists are total garbage. This is because there is a bias between Conventional and Natural medicine. Consequently, there is a need to help providers find studies they can trust. “It is important to find the right studies especially for Integrated Medicine,” said Dr. Joshua Goldenberg. “There is a need to be better at evidence-based medicine than their conventional peers. That is why I created this website. It teaches them how to evaluate the research themselves.” Dr. Journal Club Dr. Joshua Goldenberg is a researcher, teacher, registered naturopathic doctor and founder of Dr. Journal Club, LLC. He is most passionate about the interplay of evidence and clinical practice. Dr. Goldenberg is an active researcher with numerous publications in high impact scientific journals such as JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and The Cochrane Library. He is currently Research Investigator at the Bastyr University Research Institute and Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Technology Sydney. He is past adjunct faculty at Bastyr University, his alma mater, in which he enrolled after receiving honors and distinction in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania. This month Laura reaches back into the Sacred Stream archives for an interview she did with Thupten Jinpa when he was on his book tour for A Fearless Heart. The interview was impromptu and took place at Laura’s kitchen table, where she talked to Jinpa about his work with H.H. Dalai Lama, CCare, the Compassion Studies, and his perspective on generating more compassion in the world. This episode also contains a talk Jinpa gave at the Sacred Stream Center on Language and Reality. Thupten Jinpa is the primary English translator to H.H. the Dalai Lama has translated and edited more than 10 books by the Dalai Lama. His latest works are Songs of Spiritual Experience: Tibetan Buddhist Poems of Insight and Awakening (co-edited with Jas Elsner), and Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy: Tsongkhapa’s Quest for the Middle Way. At present he is the president of the Institute of Tibetan Classics in Montréal, Canada, and the editor-in-chief of the translation project The Library of Tibetan Classics, being developed by the Institute. He is on the advisory board of various educational and cultural organizations such as the Mind and Life Institute (USA), The Orient Foundation (UK & India), The Meridien Trust (UK), Global Ethics and Religion (USA), and Manjushri Buddhist Online Community. He is also a Visiting Research Scholar at the Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neurosciences at Stanford University.
