Mental health professionals and twin founders of Unearth + Bloom, Khadijah & Zakiyyah Abdul-Mateen join host JP Reynolds for a conversation about intergenerational healing, meaningful liberation, and ancestral rhythms. About Unearth + Bloom: Khadijah and Zakiyyah are a twin sister team and founders of Unearth and Bloom. They have created a business, which focuses on the many ways trauma affects the mental, emotional and physical well-being amongst people of African descent. Zakiyyah is an EMDR-Trained Child, Adolescent and Young Adult Psychotherapist, who uses child-centered meditative practices to reduce anxiety associated with traumatic memory. In her private practice, she is intentional about normalizing mental health in black and brown communities and using a culturally sensitive approach. She is also a part of a team who engages in international work, which includes providing mental health trainings to adults and community leaders in Haiti. Khadijah is a Mental Health Professional and International Yoga instructor who uses yoga and meditative practices, which centers movement and connections to the body, as a way to respond and release, stored trauma--much of which is intergenerational. Khadijah is the Founder of the "OM in Africa" project, which centers intergenerational healing throughout Africa. She has collaborated with yoga instructors in Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, and Botswana to provide yoga and healing circles to women in prison, juvenile centers (boy and girls), schools, and local communities. Together they use a holistic approach to illuminate health and wellness by conducting talk therapy groups and yoga to address trauma in the mind and the body. Our belief is that Trauma mustn’t only be released in the mind through talk therapy but also in the body through breathing and movement. This provides access to achieve total healing of our traumatic past. About JP Reynolds: Called “remarkably special” by AllHipHop, JP Reynolds is an innovative artist, rapper and songwriter with an eclectic sound. The creator of “rap gumbo,” his music is a powerful blend of jazz, funk, gospel and soul. In addition to music JP is an entrepreneur, coach, activist, and minister. Hope you made room for an all-new FANTI! This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are discussing the complicated relationship we have with Charlamagne Tha God and the rest of the team over at "The Breakfast Club." The NYC-based syndicated radio show has been on the air since 2010 and has seen everyone from bestie in our head Mo'Nique to presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton come through. Guests can expect to have a candid conversation about hot topics and be grilled by hosts Charlamagne, DJ Envy and Angela Yee. There's no denying the show is a hit but sometimes in an effort to be provocative the show can let down its audience. It often traffics in misogyny, transphobia, ignorance and shenanigans. Not to mention the fact that it's received somewhat of a reputation as being the place for White politicians to go when they want to pander to Back voters. We love that this platform exists and that Black voices have a place where we can talk about our triumphs and failures but we feel it necessary to hold the show's feet to the fire and call it like we see it. But first…Pass the PopcornThis week, we're celebrating the decision by BET to move forward with the 2020 BET Awards. Host, Amanda Seales did what needed to be done! Hat tip to everyone working hard behind the scenes to make the virtual event a success! The show deals with the aftermath of an assault and stars Coel as well. It's funny. It's chaotic. It's powerful. It's just damn good. Catch up here. Speaking of Black women doing their thing, a postumus honorable mention is in order for aerospace engineer Mary W. Jackson. You may be familiar with the name from the film "Hidden Figures" which was based, in part, on her life. NASA's DC Headquarters will be renamed after the great mathematician. Tre'vell has an honorable mention for Ms. Marsai Martin who recently took on the haters who had a problem with her hair for the BET Awards. Apparently, the library is open during lockdown. Salute!Another honorable mention goes out to Imara Jones and their doc, The Future of Trans. You can check it out here. What would happen if we threw out the boundaries between academic disciplines? How would our collective histories, conflicts, and corporealities change if we stopped assuming that art, science, and politics have ever been separate projects? Today's guest, Zakiyyah Iman Jackson, argues that the complexity of blackness and gender reveal the deep imbrications of all of these projects at the bedrock of what it means to be human. In episode 112 of the Imagine Otherwise podcast, host Cathy Hannabach interviews feminist scholar Zakiyyah Iman Jackson about her new book and the role of blackness in defining the human both historically and in our current world, how black feminist interdisciplinarity offers tools for resisting complex social violences, and why helping art and scholarship foment minor revolutions is how Zakiyyah imagines otherwise. Zakiyyah and Cooper hear from Reverend James Lawson at Church of the Advocate, hosted by the Saturday Free School.Reverend James Lawson - Scholar and ActivistA third-generation Methodist minister, the Reverend James M. Lawson, Jr., who was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, earned his local pastor’s license in 1949. Soon after being graduated from high school, he was drafted into the U.S. military, refused to enlist, and as a conscientious objector received a three-year prison sentence, of which he served 13 months. Following his prison term, Lawson served as a missionary in India for three years, where he studied nonviolent resistance and embraced the practices of Mohandas K. Gandhi, whom he had first begun to study in 1947. In his long and storied history, Lawson orchestrated the lunch counter sit-in campaign in Nashville, Tennessee, the largest and most influential of the southern student sit-in campaigns; developed strategy for the Freedom Riders; and taught the theory and practice of nonviolent direct action to students, activists, future civil rights leaders, and politicians, including U.S. Representative John R. Lewis. The Reverend Lawson has been active in many campaigns and in the instruction of emergent leaders. Often referred to as “the mind of the movement,” the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., called him "the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world." This episode got super heated as Bianca has a lil drama, Joseline confronts her about it, then Balistic goes ballistic. It all started during a couple's exercise that was suppose to test their individual loyalty to their partners. Half of their partners attended a pool party full of attractive people while the other half watched on monitors. It's safe to say Balistic did not like what he saw! Granted, Joseline was feeding fruit to another man, but Balistic really through a tantrum. On a more positive note “Bootcamp is working!” Make sure to leave a comment with your reactions to the episode and hosts Byron K, Shayna, and Zakiyyah will break it all down! In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with Zakiyyah. Long before being introduced to the awe-inspiring world of Opera, Zakiyyah was singing along to the mesmerizing sounds of Patti Labelle, New Birth, and Smokey Robinson that beamed from her parents’ stereos. In that Boston-home, she inherited the bold, socially-conscious values that cultivated her into the profound, luring artist and activist that she is today. After graduating from Wellesley College with a Political Science and Sociology degree in 2012, Zakiyyah continued her vocal studies at New England Conservatory and landed the lead role in an original musical entitled “This is Treatment” soon after. In 2016, she spent a year pursuing her artistic and scholastic ambitions in Czech Republic, Thailand, South Africa, and Colombia, where she learned about music from around the world, and worked with local artists—including Grammy-nominated group Explosión Negra. Her debut album, African Import, promises to be a continuation of the distinctive excellence that propelled her artistry into the ground-breaking force that the world will soon cherish.

Currently, her research interests have an overarching goal of improving science teacher education towards ambitious equitable classroom practices. The research program she developed during her early career years has two lines. The first line involves using the discourse analysis method to look at sociocultural dynamics of learning and teaching practice. Drawn from the fields of sociolinguistics, epistemology and climate change education research, Dr. Sezen-Barrie examines students’ and teachers’ construction of and learning from evidence-based explanations on climate change topics. The second line of research lies at the intersection of anthropology and learning progression studies. She uses the concept of “professional vision” while developing a sustainable support system to improve preservice and novice teachers’ teaching of climate science and effectively assess students’ learning in a meaningful progression. Previously, Dr. Sezen-Barrie was involved in projects to develop a framework for analyzing preservice teachers’ learning to teach science and an extensive international review of learning progression studies. Friday's show on LSN was dedicated to co-host Zee, Author of her forthcoming book, Jamaica A Memoir of Miracles, Manifestations, Love. Zakiyyah Ameedah (affectionately known as Zee) read excerpts from her book and shared her reason for writing her memoir and some of her travel experiences while on the beautiful island of Jamaica. We also heard excerpts from Jamaica A Memoir read by Lady Love, Janine Ingram as Janine opens up conversations about Zee's experiences with substance abuse, childhood molestation and other challenges Zee experienced in her life. What was intended to be a short introduction of Jamaica A Memoir, turned into an hour and a half of thought provoking conversation revealing to the audience and to Zee how her memoir has impacted readers as they delve into this amazing story of surrender, triumph, victory, and the manifestations of her childhood dream coming true...to live on a Caribbean Island. If you missed the live broadcast, listen to the playback. You will be inspired, as we all were, and waiting with anticipation of Jamaica A Memoir having its first release in December 2016 for those who pre-order. The official launch in January, 2017 is in honor of Zee's birthday and the birth of her book baby. You can send comments, about tonight's show to Zee at jamaicamemoir@gmail.com and/or via her website at www.jamaicamemoir.com where you can pre-order your book. Give Thanks, One Love! Our apologies to the family who were also expecting LSN to share information about LDR's (Long Distance Relationships). Due to the overwhelming response to Zee's book, we had to postpone "Intimacy and LDR's" to our next show, December 2, 2017. We look forward to having you join us.
