In a new episode of This Much I Know, Carlos's guest is Dr Melanie Garson, an associate professor at UCL and expert in cyber policy and geopolitics. Together they discuss critical issues in the current geopolitical and defence systems, including the evisceration of the US civil service, reactive politics, and the role of technology companies as geopolitical actors. Dr Garson emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, stress-tested technology rollouts, and the holistic view of future defence strategies. She highlights the information domain as another critical area, where misinformation and disinformation can proliferate and destabilize, underpinning the need for robust measures to counteract these threats. The conversation explores the strategic role of tech in geopolitics, the evolving nature of warfare, and the potential for innovation and international cooperation within the defence industry. Dr Garson also shares her views on the importance of building secure digital economies and engaging meaningfully with emerging technologies for long-term future defence capabilities. Looking to the future, Dr Garson predicts the emergence of new industry players and the potential for existing companies to re-engage with defence manufacturing. She remains optimistic that the industry will recognize the value of entrepreneurs and facilitate environments where innovation can thrive alongside traditional primes. From healthcare technologies to cybersecurity through renewable energies: when it comes to investment, Carlos Espinal, author of "A Field guide to Fundraising", has it covered. As well as being smart and hard-working, Carlos is an outstanding team member and mentor. He is the one person company founders call for advice. Every day at SeedCamp, where he has been a VC partner for the past six years, he embodies this human-centered, community-focused mindset when it comes to choosing a company to invest in. Today, it is leading its sixth round of seed investments, distributing between 500,000 and 1 million euros, sometimes more, for a 5-8% share.

90% of startups fail. For early-stage founders, this can come from both false positives or negatives. Two factors include: bias towards early adopters vs. mainstream customers, that are mostly necessary to scale, or giving up too early on a project that turns out to be a billion-dollar business idea a couple of months later. Tom Eisenmann, Professor at Harvard Business School, discusses this and much more in his recently published book '*The Fail-Safe Startup'*. In this episode of This Much I Know, our hosts Kate McGinn and Carlos Espinal have a chat with Tom to cover topics at the heart of founder journeys.

"Diversity of the leadership... is the number one thing you should be doing as a founder at the early stages. Because that is going to pull in more diversity over time — that's how networks operate." — Hephzi Pemberton, Founder at Equality Group Diversity and inclusion within startups is essential in innovating and adapting in our fast-paced world. Bringing people with distinctive life experiences into the room to make decisions is key, whether in leadership meetings, the board room, or investment discussions. Even if we might agree with this hypothesis, the reality is that most companies are not doing enough to encourage a diverse workforce. Research from the Silicon Valley Bank finds that only 42% of startups (in the UK, US, and Canada) have at least one C-suite executive who is ethnically or racially diverse. 43% have at least on female C-suite executive. Racial and gender, not to mention socio-economic and political, diversity is sadly by many still not seen as a must-have priority. To discuss why diversity is so important for good decision-making and share key tangible ways startups can work on their diversity and inclusion efforts, today's podcast features Hephzi Pemberton, founder of the Equality Group. Joined by our talent manager Alex Lewis, our host Carlos Espinal discusses Hephzi's most recent book launch of The Diversity Playbook. We've said it before and we'll say it again: the world of managing people and organising teams is brimming with changes. COVID-19 and new societal views on working in the 21st century (90% of Generation Z, for instance, want a human element when it comes to their job role and interactions with their coworkers) are changing workplaces of all types. Founders and investors are picking up on these trends and putting their money and time towards solving these issues. HR, a department which we remember looking like a sole office manager equipped with nothing but an Excel sheet and coupons for free drip coffee, has been booming with innovation. Giovanni Luperti, co-founder and CEO of Humaans, is one such innovator. Backed by Moonfire, Y Combinator, and a handful of operators including the CEOs of Figma, LinkedIn, Qubit and Evervault, Humaans is helping managers better onboard and manage their staff. From Delivery Hero and Zendesk, which both IPO’d, to Typeform, Clio, and Vend, the Point Nine team knows how to spot a startup poised for growth. As an early-stage investor at Seedcamp, Cherry, and now as a partner at Point Nine, Ricardo Sequerra Amram spends his days speaking with founders who are at the pre-version 1.1 development stage of a product. In this episode of This Much I Know, Carlos Espinal dives into how Ricardo assesses these bare-bone prototypes and determines their viability to scale. “A magical moment throughout our due-diligence is when we are going through the product with the founder and he is explaining to us why he built such a feature first and why exactly is it that this particular part of the product is important for the prototype, and why he didn’t build the other feature,” Ricardo says. “That’s where the clarity of thought and insight that was generated throughout years of industry experience comes out.” Listen in as Ricardo and Carlos discuss Ricardo’s path into venture capital, and how Point Nine thinks about what makes up a backable prototype and successful B2B entrepreneur.

The mistake many Western tech giants have made is seeing China as just another country where they could easily get a few million users instead of focusing on localising their product offering. Carlos is joined in the studio this week by one of our very own partners, Sia Houchangnia, who has recently returned from a month-long deep dive of exploring the venture landscape in China and south-east Asia. In this episode, Sia unpacks the key differences in approach between VCs in the far East and those in the West - from investment strategy and portfolio construction all the way to the differing perceptions of what investor value-add looks like. He also provides unique insights into the challenges faced by European companies when entering the hyper-competitive Chinese market (and vice-versa), the rise of Chinese ‘super-apps’, how to address the gaps in engineering talent coming out of the region today as well as why the prospect of more EU-Chinese collaboration is one we should be excited about.
