Tonight's guest, Rick, had his Dogman encounter one night, in 1990, around dusk. He was sitting in church with his wife, at the time, when he realized he had heard the sermon the pastor was just starting to give. When he realized he had already heard it, he told his wife that he was going to take a ride in his 85 Chevy pickup truck to kill some time. Not long after he had left the church, he turned down a secluded road that hadn't been used in a very long time. It was around 8 PM, so it was dusky/dark outside. To help him see better, he turned the overhead lights on, on his truck's rollbar. Seconds after he did that, he saw a huge creature, that wasn't supposed to exist, start climbing down the trunk of a tree that was about 50 yards from the side of the road. As the monstrosity was climbing down the trunk, Rick could hear its claws tearing the bark. At that point, Rick was rapidly approaching the part of the road that was closest to where the creature was. Curiosity got the best of him, so he stopped his truck and got out. Author Perrin Pring joins me to talk about her recently-released book, “Cash and Gravity” (Diversion Books), set in a world where everyone's trying to get off it as quickly as possible. In this book, Chevy Cole is a female Launch Tech Marine who lives in a world where mega corporations battle each other for Earthly metals in the pursuit of one day getting humans permanently off planet. During a battle, Chevy comes across a crash site containing a super soldier, an Ace, who has the world's first mobile fusion device. Chevy knows her corporation stole it from their rival. She is forced to partner with Dolon, a phantom, a man so analogue he can use cash and navigate by paper map, to get them to a safe house, thrusting them on a low-tech, high-stakes road trip across the American West.  We're going to talk all about the worldbuilding and character creation that went into this as well as the many re-writes and how this changed the story. In this episode, Brian welcomes Doug from Oregon for an intense and deeply detailed account of a roadside Sasquatch encounter that took place in February 2006 along Highway 199 between Grants Pass, Oregon, and Crescent City, California.Doug explains how a late-night drive home through the dark, winding canyon near the Collier Tunnel and The Narrows turned into one of the most unforgettable moments of his life when his headlights and orange truck lights revealed a massive upright figure walking along the road.Doug describes the creature as unlike the classic bulky depictions many people imagine. Instead, he saw something towering, lean, powerful, and athletic, with the build of an enormous basketball player.He estimates it stood somewhere around ten feet tall or more, with long arms, massive shoulders, a narrow waist, pronounced musculature, pale gray skin, dark charcoal-gray hair, and orange-red eyes that appeared to catch the light as Doug passed in his 1995 Chevy dually. The creature did not run, panic, or react aggressively. It simply kept walking, calm and natural, as Doug drove by close enough to see its face, body structure, stride, hands, feet, and skin in startling detail.The conversation moves beyond the sighting itself into the emotional aftermath of seeing something so rare and impossible to easily explain. Doug talks about the shock, excitement, fear, and frustration that followed, especially after sharing the story with people who dismissed him or made him feel ridiculed. Over time, encouragement from his wife and conversations with Native friends, outdoorsmen, hunters, and other witnesses helped him become more open about what he saw.He also shares related local accounts from the same region, including sightings near Siskiyou Forks Road, Bluff Creek, Bald Hills Road, the Klamath River, Monkey Creek, and other deeply remote parts of Northern California and Southern Oregon.Brian and Doug also dig into one of the biggest questions surrounding roadside Sasquatch encounters: why would such an elusive creature be seen walking near or on a road? Brian offers the possibility that, like other animals, Sasquatch may sometimes use roads as the path of least resistance while moving from one area to another.Doug adds his own thoughts about the rugged terrain, river corridors, steep granite slopes, and hidden access points in the area where his encounter occurred. The systems remove the factory wiper motor from the firewall and tuck it into the vehicle’s airbox or underneath the dash. Cleaner firewall, more room under the dash, and a more reliable system than what came stock on a 1957 Chevy. That last part matters. Original wiper systems on classic cars were often cable-driven and unreliable. This isn’t just about looks. People actually drive these cars in the rain. Pat ships kits to customers as far as Australia. Over 90 SKUs covering everything from C1 Corvettes to Tri-Five Chevys, Ford and Chevy trucks, and 1964-1968 Mustangs. Kits run from around $500 to $800 depending on the vehicle. The Only One in the World Pat says Rain Gear has no competition. He spent 42 years competing in the appliance installation business. Now he’s in a category of one. When customers need a wiper system for a car Rain Gear doesn’t have a kit for, they provide dimensions and Pat works with them to find the closest fit. Rain Gear Wiper Systems Wiper Kit Two Weeks Pat was looking to buy a 1965 Mustang fastback for his wife. The seller mentioned he’d only purchased the car to design a wiper system for it, and that he was also selling the company. Within two weeks Pat bought Rain Gear Wiper Systems in November 2024. His philosophy on purchasing: do the research upfront, know what you want, and when the right thing appears, don’t hesitate. “It’s always the first one. It’s not the second one, not the third one. It’s always the first one you should buy.” His wife puts it differently: “You’re bending over picking up pennies while the dollars are flying over your head.” The Founder is Still at It The original engineer, Tom Jensen, a Vietnam veteran, designed the systems and sold the company to Pat. He didn’t walk away. Jensen emailed Pat recently saying he was heading to the junkyard to buy parts to design a new kit for a 1973-1987 Chevy square body truck. Pat already has customers waiting for it. The pipeline is open. Building a Shop When Pat bought Rain Gear all parts were outsourced. He’s bringing production in-house. He’s already purchased a fiber laser, is looking for a 32mm CNC Swiss machine, and is adding a CNC brake and a high-end compressor, around five to six machines total. His brother-in-law, who installs industrial robotics professionally, is helping with setup, and a programmer he knows will handle the CAD files and machine programming remotely. Pat’s reasoning: spending $200,000 on equipment that generates revenue long-term beats spending the same on parts sitting on a shelf. One Business Fading, One Growing Pat still has two employees running the appliance installation business. The plan isn’t a hard cutoff. Rain Gear has to outgrow it first, and then he’ll let the appliance side fade naturally. He’s managed over 20 employees, multiple trucks, and two warehouses before. The organizational side doesn’t intimidate him. He’s done it.
