PM Modi said, quote, “The Supreme Court has repeatedly discussed a Uniform Civil Code in India. It is true that the civil code that we have is a communal civil code. It is based on discrimination. It is our duty to fulfil the vision of our constitution makers. Unquote.A team of UN experts will visit Bangladesh next week to investigate the killings of protesters before and after Sheikh Hasina's resignation as Prime Minister last week. According to a post by the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh on X, this will be the first UN fact-finding mission to Bangladesh since its independence in 1971 to address widespread human rights abuses. Muhammad Yunus, who assumed office as Chief Adviser on the 8th of August following Hasina's departure to India, confirmed the visit. The mission will focus on atrocities committed during the Student Revolution in July and early August over the government job quota reforms.The Central Bureau of Investigation summoned five doctors today for questioning in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Kolkata police detained nine people following a night of violence and vandalism on the ground floor of the Emergency building at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Nurses have demanded proper security on the premises, with one stating to PTI that such hooliganism inside a hospital is unacceptable.Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar district, a daily wage worker was arrested a week after the body of a nurse working in a private hospital was found. According to police, the accused, identified as Dharmendra Kumar from Bareilly, allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered the woman after intercepting her while she was going home alone after duty at the hospital on the 30th of July. This incident comes in the wake of indefinite nationwide protests against the rape and murder case of a junior doctor in a Kolkata hospital.On the global front, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that he will be stepping down from his position next month and will not contest the upcoming election for a new chief of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Australian merger laws are facing a revamp, amid concerns that the voluntary-notification system was being gamed by global dealmakers. But while there's broad agreement that the voluntary component of the existing regime needs to be scrapped, there are divisions about which model Australia should embrace. The antitrust regulator is campaigning for a formal but speedy model; lawyers are campaigning for a US-style model that would give their clients ready access to the Federal Court of Australia. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1990, and awarded the CBE in 1997, for services to monetary economics. During 1986, he helped to found the Financial Markets Group at LSE. For the previous 17 years he served as a monetary economist at the Bank of England, becoming a Chief Adviser in 1980. Following his advice on overcoming the financial crisis in Hong Kong in 1983, he subsequently served on the HK Exchange Fund Advisory Committee until 1997. Later in 1997 he was appointed for three years, until May 2000, one of the four independent outside members of the newly-formed Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee. He became an economic consultant to Morgan Stanley in 2009, until he resigned, at the age of 80, in 2016. Professor Willem Buiter is an independent economic advisor and speaker. He is Adjunct Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board. He was Global Chief Economist at Citigroup from 2010 to 2018 and a Special Economic Advisor at Citigroup from 2018 to 2019. Previously, he was Chief Economist and Special Counselor to the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. He was the Juan T Trippe Professor of International Economics at Yale University and has also held academic appointments at the London School of Economics, Cambridge University, the University of Bristol, and Princeton University. He is the author of 78 refereed articles in professional journals and seven books. Dr Andrew Hilton OBE is a financial and economic commentator and consultant, based in London. In 1993, he co-founded the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation (CSFI), a non-profit think-tank supported by up to 70 City institutions (including the BofE and the Treasury), and was its Director until March 2021. During that time, the CSFI held over three thousand events, published well over one hundred reports as well as a regular journal, and produced over 400 videos, establishing itself as an international thought-leader in the fields of financial services and macroeconomics. He has worked for the World Bank in Washington and was editor-in-chief of a New York-based financial advisory service owned by the Financial Times . He has written books on LDC debt and edited a UN work on free-trade zones. He is a board member of the Observatoire de la finance in Geneva. He has a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from Wharton and an MA from New College, Oxford. He was appointed OBE in 2006. Dr Shann Turnbull published The Management of Capital in 1965 to promote modern financial analysis in Australia. He became a part time teacher at Australia's first business schools while being a serial entrepreneur founding many enterprises with three becoming traded on the Australian stock exchange. From 1967 to 1974 he was in charge of research for a private equity group that acquired and re-organized a eight publicly traded companies. In 1970 he also became a founding joint CEO/owner of a public mutual fund management company. In 2001 he obtained a PhD from Macquarie University with a thesis that showed how the science of control and communication in the animal and the machine described as cybernetics could be extended to organizations to create a science of governance using bytes as the unit of analysis.

Director of the IPR, Professor Nick Pearce; Professional Doctorate student and Programme Director at the Malala Fund, Javed Ahmed; and Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Bath, Dr Arif Naveed, are joined by Sir Michael Barber to discuss public policy delivery in the UK, Pakistan and beyond. Sir Michael Barber is Founder and Chairman of Delivery Associates, an advisory firm which helps government and other organisations to deliver improved outcomes for citizens. He is a leading authority on education systems and education reform. He is also Chair of the Office for Students, the proposed new regulator for Higher Education. From 2011-15 Sir Michael was DfID's Special Representative on Education in Pakistan. He led a radical education reform with the Chief Minister of Punjab and, in 2013, published The Good News from Pakistan about the programme with Reform, He was Chief Education Adviser at Pearson from September 2011 to March 2017. Prior to this, he was a Partner at McKinsey & Company and Head of McKinsey's global education practice. He co-authored two major McKinsey education reports: How the world's best-performing schools come out on top (2007) and How the world's most improved school systems keep getting better (2010). Sir Michael was Head of the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit from 2001-05, and Chief Adviser to the Secretary of State for Education on School Standards from 1997-2001. Before joining government, he was a professor at the Institute of Education, University of London. He is a consultant to charities and organisations on their safeguarding policies and practices; he trains board members and senior staff in safeguarding; and he carries out statutory and in-house reviews and investigations into child and adult protection issues.From 2007-20012 he chaired the Independent Safeguarding Authority prior to its merger with the Criminal Records Bureau to form the Disclosure and Barring Service. Such freedom could enable the UK to meet its goal of delivering global leadership on the environment and improve standards (as several governments in the UK have expressed their intention to do) but does not prevent a move toward deregulation or the lowering of standards in pursuits of other policy goals.The UK government introduced the UK Internal Market Bill to manage trade between the four countries of the UK from the end of transition which has sparked controversy for a number of reasons. The bill has sparked controversy for a number of reasons, including concerns from the devolved governments that the proposals will infringe on existing devolution settlements and threaten to stall - or even undermine - their development of ambitious standards and regulation.How can the integrity of the UK internal market be balanced with the governments' environmental objectives? On Friday 13th November, Paris became the site of Western Europe's deadliest terrorist attack in over ten years.
