Breeders' Cup handicapping, a controversial column and even the presidential election are the topics on this week's seventh-anniversary episode of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Steve Kornacki from NBC Sports and NBC News is not only providing analysis from his big board for the championships next week, but he also discusses his day job that has him absorbed in the Nov. 4 election. Battleground states and battleground horse races get the once over, especially his thoughts about Thorpedo Anna vs. Idiomatic in the Distaff. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen offers insights about his five Breeders' Cup entrants, including Turf Sprint standout Cogburn and how he will do against leading Europe contender Bradsell. Super Screener creator Mike Shutty not only handicaps Saturday's Mother Goose Stakes at Aqueduct, he has some angles he will be pursuing next Friday and Saturday when the two big days will unfold at Del Mar. Feedback is about the column last Friday calling out over-the-line criticism of jockey Luan Machado's finish line mistake last week at Keeneland and the idea that it could be the start of a more troublesome trend that has mushroomed in sports gambling. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.

In today's Summer School episode from the IBI Archive is episode 4 with psychologist, Dr. Courtney Cogburn. Hailing from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Doctor Cogburn's research focuses on how racism contributes to health disparities amongst Black Americans and in particular how over time, blatant and subtle racism in media stresses and literally wears down Black bodies—a phenomenon also known as “weathering”—something we have all witnessed to during the current outbreak of Covid-19 in the United States, and its devastating effects on communities of color.An associate professor at Columbia's School of Social Work, Dr. Cogburn's racial immersion VR experience, 1000-Cut Journey, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. Developed in collaboration with the Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford University, It allows for the viewer to experience life as a Black man, from adolescence through adulthood, and has been featured on TEDx, CBS, and Forbes.In this conversation we discuss when she first began to notice the correlation between race and academic achievement (5:00), the effects of "breathing racism" (13:00), how watching videos of police brutality is bad for our health (18:46), how reason rarely works as well empathy (22:00), a step-by-step explanation of her racial VR experience (28:04), how her lack of experience with virtual reality didn't keep her from pursuing her goals (34:22), her biggest failure as a researcher (41:40), how her own son changed the way she works (43:18), why higher education has health benefits for every demographic, except for those of African decent (46:48), and the ways in which VR is being used to help Black people begin to heal from a lifetime of racial stress (59:26). Given where we are as a country and a people, I found this conversation to be right on time.Links we mention in the episode:Courtney's Twitter Account: @courtneycogburnHer Racial VR Experience: 1,000-Cut JourneyHyphen Labs: Neurospeculative AfrofeminismThank you for tuning in! This July marks 33 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed — a landmark law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, communications, and government resources. The ADA is meant to protect people with disabilities from discrimination in everyday life, and the law's signing made the US the first country in the world to adopt a declaration of equality for persons with disabilities. The legacy of the ADA has included increased activism and policy gains for persons with disabilities worldwide. In this episode of Big World, SIS and Kogod professor Derrick Cogburn joins us to discuss the ongoing legacy of the ADA (2:12), noting that disability policy was once a bipartisan issue in the United States but is no longer. He also describes disability policy as emanating from three imperatives: moral, economic, and legal (4:37). Cogburn explains the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) (6:28), explaining that the US is not among the more than 180 countries who have ratified the convention, despite then-President Barack Obama signing the CRPD (8:28). He also describes global disability movements (9:42) and discusses frameworks like the New Urban Agenda, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the Sendai Framework, all of which incorporate disability policy. What are some policy shifts in the realm of online accessibility over the last decade (20:23)? What are the ramifications of untapped potential when spaces, either physical or online, are not accessible to people with disabilities (29:32)? Cogburn answers these questions and discusses shifts in activists' approach to creating disability policy goals in recent years. The podcast concludes with Cogburn's comments about how the inclusion of persons with disabilities can have many positive impacts on our world (33:29). During our “Take Five” segment, Cogburn shares the five disability policies he would want to see instituted globally (16:39).
Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.Please share with a friend and leave a review!

In Indexicalism: The Metaphysics of Paradox (Edinburgh UP, 2021), Hilan Bensusan clarifies the logic and structure of an essentially situated and indexical metaphysics that is paradoxical and can also be regarded as a chapter in the critique of metaphysics. Bensusan articulates a metaphysical view of the other – both human and non-human, in what Meillassoux calls 'the great outdoors' – that can never be totalised into a single or univocal whole. He develops an innovative account of perception, as a matter of our irreducibly situated relationship to this non-totalisable outdoors. In the book's coda, Bensusan underscores the social-political implications of this radical metaphysics in a postcolonial context in a meditation on the sites of Potosi in the Andes and Yasuni National Park in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Equally at home with analytic and continental philosophy, Bensusan enlists Levinas, Whitehead, Heidegger, Kripke, Deleuze, Derrida, Benso, Harman, Garcia, Cogburn, McDowell and Haraway. He does so in a way that proves to be transformative for crucial aspects of their work, for contemporary approaches to thinking about what it means to be in our world, and for reckoning with the responsibilities that press upon us from the outside. Adam Bobeck is a PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Leipzig. His PhD is entitled “Object-Oriented Azadari: Shi'i Muslim Rituals and Ontology”. The next frontier of the internet is the metaverse. That's why Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his company from Facebook to Meta, and just sold $10 billion in corporate bonds to raise money for metaverse-related projects.How might we learn from our experience with social media, and anticipate the harms of the metaverse before they arise? What would it look like to design a humane metaverse — that respects our attention, improves our well-being, and strengthens our democracy?This week on Your Undivided Attention, we talk with two pioneers who are thinking critically about the development of the metaverse. Professor Jeremy Bailenson is the Founding director of Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab, where he studies how virtual experiences lead to changes in perceptions of self and others. Dr. Courtney Cogburn is an Associate Professor at Columbia's School of Social Work, where she examines associations between racism and stress-related disease. Jeremy and Courtney collaborated on 1000 Cut Journey, a virtual reality experience about systemic racism.CORRECTIONS: In the episode, Jeremy says that Facebook bought Oculus for $3 billion, but the actual price was $2.1 billion.Courtney says that the average US adult consumes 9 hours of media per day, but the actual number in 2022 is closer to 13 hours.Jeremy estimated that in 2021, between 15-20 million VR headsets were sold in the US, but the number of headsets sold worldwide that year was 11.2 million, which means that the US number was significantly lower.Finally, Aza mentions the "pockets of 4.6 billion people" — implying that there are 4.6 billion smartphone users. The global number of social media users is 4.7 billion, and the number of smartphone users is actually 6.6 billion.RECOMMENDED MEDIA: Experience on Demand: What Virtual Reality Is, How It Works, and What It Can Dohttps://www.amazon.com/Experience-Demand-Virtual-Reality-Works/dp/0393253694Jeremy Bailenson's 2018 book exploring how virtual reality can be harnessed to improve our everyday livesExperiencing Racism in VRhttps://www.ted.com/talks/courtney_cogburn_experiencing_racism_in_vr_courtney_d_cogburn_phd_tedxrvaCourtney Cogburn's 2017 TEDx talk about how using virtual reality to help people experience the complexities of racismDo Artifacts Have Politics?https://faculty.cc.gatech.edu/~beki/cs4001/Winner.pdf Technology philosopher Langdon Winner's seminal 1980 article, in which he writes, "by far the greatest latitude of choice exists the very first time a particular instrument, system, or technique is introduced."RECOMMENDED YUA EPISODES: Do You Want To Become A Vampire? with LA Paulhttps://www.humanetech.com/podcast/39-do-you-want-to-become-a-vampirePardon the Interruptions with Gloria Markhttps://www.humanetech.com/podcast/7-pardon-the-interruptionsBonus - What Is Humane Technology?https://www.humanetech.com/podcast/bonus-what-is-humane-technologyYour Undivided Attention is produced by the Center for Humane Technology. Hey, Everyone! Here we are again with another LOOOONG episode! But, "Purity in Death" is so dense and there's so much happens in this book, we really needed 2hrs to go through it all. In this one, there is a vigilante group that is targeting criminals who have committed crimes against young kids, and use a computer virus to give these people an actual virus that causes their brains to explode. The unfortunate thing is that these people take some innocent people out with them, and that's not okay. The story opens with Eve getting a call from Trueheart who had answered a distress call and found Louie K Cogburn beating a couple of his neighbors with a baseball bat. Trueheart stunned Cogburn, and even though the stunner was on a low setting, Cogburn dies. When Eve enters the scene, she sees that on Cogburn's computer, there is a message that says: "Absolute Purity Achieved." Later, Morris tells Eve that Cogburn had some sort of virus in his brain that caused his brain to explode. It was the virus that killed Cogburn, not Trueheart stunning him. During the course of her investigation, Eve finds out that a vigilante group calling themselves "The Purity Seekers" is responsible for a computer virus that is somehow transferring to humans, and they are sending it to people they consider trash humans. The "Purity" theme is played out in many ways here in this book. "The Purity Seekers" is taking out their vengeance on people who they feel took away the "Purity" of their children. But also, someone like Trueheart has some of his own purity taken away by having Cogburn's death on his conscience. But the other underlying theme in this book is the theme of "family." Again, "The Purity Seekers" are avenging their family members by killing the people who hurt them. But also, in this book, Eve realizes that she has created her own family with Roarke and her squad. Also, Mavis seems to be starting a family as she announces to Eve that she is pregnant. Eve and Roarke are a bit at odds in this book because Roarke personally knew one of the murder victims, Chadwick Fitzhugh, and Roarke is not sorry at all that Fitzhugh is dead. Roarke, as we know from Vengeance, Roarke has also dispensed his own form of justice out to the men who killed Summerset's daughter. He does recognize on some level that what "The Purity Seekers" have done is not right, but it's not as black and white to him as it is to Eve. Eve's position on this whole thing is that while she understands wanting to get revenge on trash humans who prey on kids, she is more worried about the innocent people who have lost their lives in the process. She also wonders where the line will be drawn. If left unchecked, would these people decide to go after people for more minor crimes or just because they dislike them? That possibility is unacceptable to Eve, and she can't let that stand. A couple of the innocent people who suffer because of this computer virus are Kevin Halloway, who contracts the virus after trying to troubleshoot Cogburn's computer system, and McNab, who Halloway stuns as he suffers the effects of the virus. Halloway also takes Feeney hostage in a very intense scene. Halloway ends up dead, and McNab ends up paralyzed on his right side. Eve feels so bad about McNab, she convinces Roarke to pull some strings and get McNab released early so that he can recover at Eve and Roarke's mansion. Proving to all observant readers that she really is, as Roarke puts it, "Lieutenant Softie." We get to see Jamie Lingstrom again in this episode when Roarke brings Jamie in to help them try to neutralize the computer virus on the infected computer. We get a really amazing button moment with Roarke when he decides to test the infected machine, risking getting the infection himself. Dumbass. He understands the risks and takes the button out of his pocket to rub it for luck before he goes ahead with the test. Later, Eve finds out he risked his life in that way, and is pissed. Eve is very annoyed in this book also because she's having to deal with New York Deputy Mayor Jenna Franco and also with the Mayor's media liason, Lee Chang. Eve is annoyed by having to do media appearances anyway, but both of these people are really annoying, wanting Eve to do more media appearances than she has time for. There's also a couple of good scenes with Webster, who, even though he is in Internal Affairs, he is really very much on Eve's side. Later, Eve puts together an op in order to try and save someone from the virus, and in the midst of that, Peabody gets hurt, and now Eve is really pissed, and decides she needs to take down this group hard. BUT...there's a bit of a twist at the end, and it's amazing. Commendations: Jen gives her commendation to Baxter, being his first time on Eve's "Team," and he takes on Trueheart. Tara gives her commendation to Whitney, because he trusts Eve and has her six. AJ gives her commendation to Jamie, because as Jamie says: "Genius has no age."

How do you, as an athlete, combine your understanding of sport science and your training and racing experience to most effectively map out your training? That question is the basis for today’s episode, one in which we drift between the philosophical and the practical. Essentially, we’ll dissect the different ways science and experience can influence how we train. Where does the science shine? Where does experience come into play? How do we best balance the two? And how can we use so-called scientific thinking to improve how we digest and analyze each and every experience we have in our training and races to become a better athlete? Remember that even when we’re talking about your experience as a rider, you are essentiallyJame experimenting on yourself – it's just an N of 1. We’ll talk about all that and much more, on today’s episode. Our primary guest today is former pro racer turned Ph.D. student Cameron Cogburn. After years of racing for teams including Smart Stop and Jelly Belly, Cameron took an academic turn. He’s now a Ph.D. candidate in theoretical physics at Boston University. We also hear from physician Dr. James Hull, who appeared in our last episode on breathing; pro racer Erica Clevenger; and our friends from The Pro’s Closet, Spencer Powlison and Bruce Lin. The Embarrassment & Big Dipper special with Bill Goffrier in conversation with David Eastaugh Although some people considered the band punk rock, the band itself liked to describe themselves as "Blister Pop." The Village Voice's long-time chief music critic, Robert Christgau, called them a "great lost American band."[1] Along with bands like Get Smart!, and the Mortal Micronotz, the Embarrassment were prominent in the Lawrence punk scene of the early '80s and they would regularly play at venues like the Lawrence Opera House (now called "Liberty Hall") and the Off The Wall Hall (later called "Cogburn's", now called "The Bottleneck"). The Embarrassment stopped performing when two of the members moved to Boston. Giessmann drummed for The Del Fuegos, and Goffrier formed the band Big Dipper with former members of the Volcano Suns. Several of The Embarrassment's unreleased songs were recorded by Big Dipper, including "Faith Healer," which was later covered by Japanese all-girl group Shonen Knife. The "Embos," as fans call them, have played several reunion concerts in the years since, the latest being in August 2008, when they played an acoustic show in Wichita.

We're joined by Mike Cogburn, Head of Digital Consulting and Innovation at SS&C Technologies, to discuss the future of marketing in a post-Covid-19 world. Together, we explore how companies are transitioning from physical outreach to digital marketing, why timeliness matters in content marketing, and how to communicate effectively during times of market volatility.
In today’s episode we chat with psychologist, Dr. Courtney Cogburn. Hailing from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Doctor Cogburn’s research focuses on how racism contributes to health disparities amongst Black Americans and in particular how over time, blatant and subtle racism in media stresses and literally wears down Black bodies—a phenomenon also known as “weathering”—something we have all witnessed to during the current outbreak of Covid-19 in the United States, and its devastating effects on communities of color. An associate professor at Columbia’s School of Social Work, Dr. Cogburn’s racial immersion VR experience, 1000-Cut Journey, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. Developed in collaboration with the https://vhil.stanford.edu/projects/2016/examining-racism-with-virtual-reality/ (Virtual Human Interaction Lab) at Stanford University, It allows for the viewer to experience life as a Black man, from adolescence through adulthood, and has been featured on TEDx, CBS, and Forbes. In this conversation we discuss when she first began to notice the correlation between race and academic achievement (5:00), the effects of "breathing racism" (13:00), how watching videos of police brutality is bad for our health (18:46), how reason rarely works as well empathy (22:00), a step-by-step explanation of her racial VR experience (28:04), how her lack of experience with virtual reality didn't keep her from pursuing her goals (34:22), her biggest failure as a researcher (41:40), how her own son changed the way she works (43:18), why higher education has health benefits for every demographic, except for those of African decent (46:48), and the ways in which VR is being used to help Black people begin to heal from a lifetime of racial stress (59:26). Given where we are as a country and a people, I found this conversation to be right on time. Podcast Description “There’s a disconnect between beliefs and behavior. And there’s an investment in the symbolism of one’s beliefs and translating that as if it represents behavior when it doesn’t.” Dr. Courtney D. Cogburn is an associate professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work and faculty of the Columbia Population Research Center. She employs a transdisciplinary research strategy to improve the characterization and measurement of racism and in examining the role of racism in the production of racial inequities in health. Dr. Cogburn’s work also explores the potential of media and technology in eradicating racism and eliminating racial inequities in health. She is the lead creator of 1000 Cut Journey, an immersive virtual reality experience of racism that premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival developed in collaboration with Jeremy Bailenson at Stanford University. Dr. Cogburn is developing additional projects attempting to leverage emerging technologies to tackle issues of structural and cultural racism. Dr. Cogburn completed postdoctoral training at Harvard University in the Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholar Program and at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in Education and Psychology, and MSW from the University of Michigan and her BA in Psychology from the University of Virginia. Transcription 00:30 Kim Crayton: Hello, everyone. And welcome to today's episode of the #CauseAScene Podcast. I have someone on that I do not know. I actually saw some tweets about a talk they did at All Tech is Human, and I immediately reached out to Dr. Courtney Cogburn to come on the show and talk about what she was disrupting that audience with. So, Dr. Cogburn could you please introduce yourself to the audience? Dr. Courtney D. Cogburn: Hi, I'm Dr. Courtney Cockburn. I'm an associate professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work. KC: We always start with two questions: Why is it important to cause a scene? And how are you causing a scene? 01:16 CDC: I think it's important to cause a scene, because it suggests that you're awake and paying attention and that there's meaning to your voice and presence in the world. So, are you paying attention? Do you see any of the problems before our eyes? And do you find value in yourself enough to do something about it? And so I think inherently bad intersection results in causing a scene. How am I causing a scene? You know, I'm a little bit irreverent in general. I do what I want to do. And that's not common for a tenure-track professor at, you know, an elite white institution. But it's absolutely the way that I approach my work. A phrase I've been using more and more lately that I like—because I got it from Game of Thrones—there's a line—I don't know if you watch Game of Thrones—but there's a line where one of the characters says, "We don't have time for this. The world is ending and we need to make some choices or some decisions." And so I used it a lot lately because we don't have time for pontificating and dancing around issues, or really even selfishly focusing only on our own careers and whether we get tenure or not, or whether we get promoted or not. And while those things are important, I think what we're doing for the world and for people and communities around us and how we're leaving the world, given these really existential pressing issues is part of what's important to me. So, for me specifically, that focuses on issues of racism and the various spaces in which racism shows up, which is every space. 03:13 KC: All right, So, can you tell us...let's just start where I started. What was your talk at All Tech is Human about? CDC: So in that talk—it was a lightning talk—I had five minutes to make a point. KC: Wow! OK, so... wow! CDC: And I'm thinking, just like, we don't have time for this. KC: Exactly! 03:37 CDC: And so my talk was about being antiracist in tech.
Courtney Cogburn is a professor at the Columbia School of Social Work and the co-creator of 1000 Cut Journey.

Courtney Cogburn: Virtual Reality to Improve Race Relations (Ep. 132) Columbia University School of Social Work Professor Courtney Cogburn joined Joe Miller to discuss her work with virtual reality to improve race relations. Bio Courtney Cogburn (@CourtneyCogburn) is an assistant professor at the Columbia School of Social Work and a Faculty Affiliate of the Columbia Population Research Center. Her research integrates principles and methodologies across psychology, stress physiology and social epidemiology to investigate relationships between racism-related stress and racial health disparities across the life course. Her work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Her current research projects examine: the effects of cultural racism in the media on physiological, psychological and behavioral stress reactivity and moderating effects of cognitive appraisal processes; the role of structural racism in producing disease risk; and chronic psychosocial stress exposure and related implications for understanding Black/White disparities in cardiovascular health and disease between early and late adulthood. At the end of 2014, Dr. Cogburn received an award from the Provost’s Grants Program for Junior Faculty Who Contribute to the Diversity Goals of the University for a project titled “Black Face to Ferguson: A Mixed Methodological Examination of Media Racism, Media Activism and Health.” In addition to her academic research, Dr. Cogburn works with the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and is a senior advisor at the International Center Advocates Against Discrimination in NYC to educate and build community activism around issues of racism and health. The company announced that it will now fact-check political photos and videos, allow you to see the personal data they have on you, and limit the sharing of your personal information with data brokers. Meanwhile, on the legal front, Missouri’s Republican Attorney General has opened an investigation into Facebook’s data collection practices. Attorney General Josh Hawley wants to know about every instance in which Facebook shared user data with political entities, the rates they paid and whether users were notified. In addition, Facebook will not provide evidence or testify before a U.K. parliamentary committee investigating Facebook’s use of user data. However, he will testify before Congress, and Sunny Bonnell reports in Inc. that it could happen as soon as April 10th. In addition, housing groups are suing Facebook for allowing real estate advertisers to discriminate against mothers, the disabled and minorities, according to Jordan Pearson in Motherboard. And Ali Breland reported on a memo leaked from 2016 written by Facebook executive Andrew Bosworth suggesting the company’s expansion is justified even if it costs lives from bullying or a terrorist attack. Sinclair, which is in the process of buying Tribune Media, has anchors read same script Sinclair Broadcasting, the little-known media company that’s in the process of buying Tribune Media for $3.9 billion, has been accused of being a mouthpiece for conservative viewpoints. Republican FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has been seen by many to have paved the way for Sinclair by relaxing longstanding media ownership rules. Now, Deadspin has put together a video showing dozens of anchors on tv stations owned by Sinclair reciting the exact same script making the same claims about fake news that the Trump administration has been making. Sinclair now reaches 2 out of every 5 American homes, with 193 stations concentrated in midsize markets. The merger with Tribune Media would bring that number up to 236, including stations in New York City and Chicago, if Sinclair doesn’t divest some of the stations. Emily Stewart reports in Vox. In a Tweet, President Trump defended Sinclair. The parent company of the two department stores, Hudson’s Bay Company, said in a statement that the company has identified the issue, is taking steps to contain it, and will keep the public informed. Trump attacks Amazon Trump attacked Amazon on twitter last week, saying the company should be regulated, which led to a dip in the company’s stock prices. But policy experts say that antitrust action against Amazon is a long shot. Laura Stevens reports in the Wall Street Journal. City of Atlanta hit by cyberattack Eight thousand employees of the City of Atlanta had to shut down their computers last week. The reason? A ransomware attack. The attackers demanded $51,000 to unscramble government processes usually handled online. While the attack did not affect major systems like wastewater treatment and 911 calls, police officers had to write tickets by hand, none of Atlanta’s 6 million residents could apply for city jobs, and the courts could not validate warrants. This week the Federal Trade Commission confirmed it is investigating Facebook over its handling of user data. The U.S. Department of Homeland security also published a report revealing that Russia hacked the U.S. electricity grid. And a cyber attack shut down the city of Atlanta for over a week. Unbeknownst to many, American University professor Derrick Cogburn says there is actually a system for governing the internet, which enables things like cyber attacks and data breaches. It just doesn’t revolve around government actors. “There are a whole range of organizations that contribute to internet governance,” Cogburn said. “Governments play a role but they're not at the center of it.” Since the internet’s inception in 1990, governments have been given a voice through the annual Internet Governance Forum . “This is where we have these debates that take place and where you have a convergence of expectations,” Cogburn said. “No decisions are being taken within the Internet Governance Forum

This week we’re taking another trip back to the Old West with The Coen Brothers’ 2010 remake of True Grit. This story follows 14 year old Mattie Ross as she sets out to see her father’s killer brought to justice. With the aid of Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, Mattie tracks the killer and his gang across the Indian Territory of Arkansas and to their mountain hideout. In the end, Mattie gets her revenge but is bitten by a venomous snake and has to be quickly carried back to civilization by Rooster Cogburn. This is a wonderful film that was released to much critical acclaim. The back and forth between Cogburn and LaBoeuf sets the tone for their relationship throughout the film. Who played a better Rooster Cogburn, Jeff Bridges or John Wayne? How spectacular is Hailee Steinfeld in this film? Can you believe this was her first major film role, at age 13? What are the chances the Coens will make a remake of Rooster Cogburn? This movie is great and if you haven’t watched the 1969 original make sure you check that out as well.

It's been a busy summer, having (a) taught an exciting (and sadly timely) new course on Employment Discrimination Law. As a result, Hearsay Culture has taken a bit of a summer hiatus; but, I have a few more shows from the past two months to post. Here's the first, show # 256, May 20, my interview with Francesca Musiani of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, Profs. Derrick L. Cogburn of American University's School of International Service (SIS), and Laura DeNardis of American University's School of Communication, co-editors of The Turn to Infrastructure in Internet Governance. Francesca, Derrick and returning guest Laura, along with co-editor Nanette Levinson, have gathered leading scholars and thinkers on the state of Internet operations. This area is critically important as the Internet moves into governance by international, rather than American, organizations. Particularly given the chaotic state of our public discourse, it is essential for policymakers to understand the various forces that operate to expand and constrain the Internet. In our discussion, we covered a range of topics, from Internet governance politics to whether international bodies can take on this complex task. I greatly enjoyed this wide-ranging discussion! {Hearsay Culture is a talk show on KZSU-FM, Stanford, 90.1 FM, hosted by Center for Internet & Society Resident Fellow David S. Levine. The show includes guests and focuses on the intersection of technology and society. How is our world impacted by the great technological changes taking place? Each week, a different sphere is explored. For more information, please go to http://hearsayculture.com.}
Jack speaks to director, writer, producer and audio enthusiast MJ Cogburn from Darker Projects and Colonial Radio Theatre.
Proxy Cogburn, leader of the Firewall presence on exoplanet Minerva 4, is personally leading a team of agents to explore a possible X-threat on Wormwood, an infamous gatecrashing site. Wormwood is nothing but a massive tunnel network stretching out for hundreds of kilometers in all directions from its gate. It is believed to be an asteroid, but no one has found a way out yet and the tunnels have yet to be fully mapped. Several weeks ago, a Firewall sentinel and gatecrasher stationed on Wormwood detected a rogue team of explorers who breached a wall and disappeared. Given that Wormwood was built by an alien civilization, Firewall needs to make sure the explorers haven't unleashed some hellish alien technology that could pose a threat to transhumanity. Little do the other agents realize that Cogburn (formerly known as Gerard) might have a hidden agenda.
