Inside this Episode with host, Mitch Hampton I seem to never tire of saying that among my many missions on this podcast is to have guests that are quite different than myself. Although Christine and I are both musicians and in the music world, I can't carry a tune to save my life and my truly awful singing voice is one of the main reasons I decided to purely instrumental music in terms of my own performance. Not only does our guest have one of the best singing voices in her for any field or genre of music but she also speaks five plus languages and is well versed in a remarkably diverse repertoire of music Indeed her newest release is representative of just the kind of eclecticism I always champion. I always love having guests on my show who have been in the "classical music" world as it is a genre most misunderstood at times by the public and always worthy of continuation and celebration. I sincerely hope you enjoy watching this episode as much as we did recording it. If you always wished you could see Lady Macbeth take on Don Juan… consider this reimagining of the Don Juan myth from a celebrated Ukrainian author. Donna Anna is looking to transcend her position in society, and an ineffectual Don Juan might just be her ticket out – inciting an impassioned game of cat and mouse. Told in the Spanish Golden Age tradition, this play's masquerade balls, moody cemeteries, and sword fights will keep an audience in joyful suspense until its surprising conclusion. With complexity, romance, and modern-sounding verse, Ukrainka examines the power struggles that still hold sway in our relationships today.Hosted by Gagarin and Skye PagonSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/this-is-a-classic-the-expand-the-canon-theatre-podcast/donations

Sonya Baker is an accomplished singer and gifted educator who shared her journey so eloquently. Please listen through the end, where you will hear from Sonya about what it meant to her to sing "Ride the Chariot" as part of her time in the Glee Club. Thanks to the Yale Glee Club we have a a recording of Sonya singing her powerful solo of that spiritual, which is a real treat. Here is a bit more about Sonya: Dr. Sonya Gabrielle Baker, soprano, made her Carnegie Hall debut with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, singing music of Aaron Copland. Noted for her performances of American music, Baker has been heard in concert both nationally and internationally, including performances in Havana, Cuba with the Yale Alumni Chorus and at the World Equestrian Games opening ceremonies with the American Spiritual Ensemble. Baker has toured regularly as a soloist with the American Spiritual Ensemble, a professional ensemble whose mission is to keep the American Spiritual alive. She appears on their recording entitled The Spirituals and in the PBS documentary by the same name. Baker's debut solo recording, SHE SAYS, featuring art songs of American Women composers, was released in 2004, a year after she appeared as soloist on the Yale Alumni Chorus tour to Moscow singing at the Kremlin. Baker's scholarly agenda is focused on crossing boundaries and disciplines, perhaps best exemplified by her solo recording and her lecture recital on Marian Anderson's 1939 Easter Concert. Baker has presented this lecture recital nationwide and is currently working on a second recording in tribute to Marian Anderson featuring Lieder and spiritual arrangements. Highlights of Baker's operatic roles include Elisabetta in Verdi's Don Carlo, Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Monisha in Joplin's Treemonisha, and the title role in the U.S. premiere of Mascagni's Pinotta. A former fellow with the American Council on Education, Baker has held leadership positions in higher education, serving as Associate Dean at JMU and Murray State University, and with various professional organizations: as board member for the Kentucky Arts Council, Kentucky Governor for the National Association of Teachers of Singing and currently a board member for the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) and the Yale Alumni Chorus. A graduate of Leadership Kentucky, LEAD Virginia and the Society for College and University Planning Institute, Baker is fully committed to advocating for diverse communities and environments that embrace multiple peoples and perspectives. To this end, she has served on multiple university committees and has been a mentor both formally and informally throughout her career. Baker holds degrees from Yale, Indiana and Florida State Universities.

This time, Rebecca takes her turn as interviewer. She speaks to the exceptional Lauren McQuistin about her journey through alcoholism and into recovery, and how it has impacted her musical and personal life. Alcohol is such a mainstay of the music industry, classical and otherwise, and Lauren speaks with such honesty and eloquence on this historically taboo subject. The line between what can be seemingly 'harmless' social drinking and potentially devastating alcoholism is extremely fine, and hearing about Lauren's own struggles and subsequent determination to recover was inspirational to say the least. Scottish soprano, Lauren McQuistin, completed her undergraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland before moving to America to pursue a Master of Music at Indiana University. In Scotland she featured as a soloist with BBC Choir of the Year Les Sirenes, as well as performing as Donna Anna in scenes performances. A keen interpreter of Russian music, McQuistin made her Scottish Opera/McOpera Collective debut as Marfa in Shostakovich's Rotschild's Violin, as well as competing in and winning the Art Song class in the Sergei Leiferkus Competition for Voice in Moscow. Upon moving to America, she performed as Alice Ford and Adriana Lecouvreur in Vaness' Opera workshop, and she made her IU principal debut in 2016 as the title role of Florencia in the Jacob's School of Music production of Florencia en el Amazonas. She then went on to perform Countess Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro with Bloomingvoce, in Bloomington. During this time she was awarded district winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions in St Louis and Nashville. Lauren was additionally the recipient of the Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Prize, whose purpose is to assist in launching the career of a graduating voice student who demonstrates exceptional talent as an artist and promise for professional success.

Today I am talking to Marrianne Town Smith, a dramatic soprano who found her voice much later than what is the usual trajectory for classical singers. Having had a highly successful career, Marrianne's life in marketing was halted due to changes in her personal circumstances. And then she found singing. In our conversation Marrianne tells about her experiences of stepping into the daunting realm of a music conservatoire in her early forties, she explains of what makes communication a primary skill both in business and in music, and highlights the importance of living life to the full.Marrianne Town Smith started to sing in 2007 as a hobby and distraction from a fast-paced Marketing Management role. Since then she has been on an adventure into opera and classical music, doing as much to learn and grow with a full time job as was possible. In 2015, she successfully auditioned for a Postgraduate Vocal Studies programme at Trinity Laban and graduated with distinction in 2017. She has performed many roles in operas and staged scenes at Blackheath Halls Community Opera, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, AIMS international Singing School and City Lit Opera, as well as regularly performing recitals in venues around London and the south east. She has sung in masterclasses with Susan Bullock, David Gowland and Christa Ludwig. In 2018 she sang her first opera role with Opera in the Meantime, singing the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel. In 2019 she covered the roles of Maddalena in Andrea Chenier, and Madeleine Lidoine in Les Dialogues des Carmélites with Midsummer Opera. She performed her first role with orchestra singing Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in Sicily at the Mediterannean Opera Studio and Festival in July 2019. In December last year she sang both the Witch and debuted the role of Getrude with Opera in the Meantime's revival production of Hänsel und Gretel. 2020 started with two Requiems and the opportunity to add oratorio roles to her resume, with Verdi's Requiem and the Brahms's Requiem, both conducted by Peter Fender. And then sadly Covid-19 took over and all other plans for this year have been postponed. However, she remains optimistic—she has been working away in her garden “She Shack” learning new roles and repertoire. She is also having online coaching with amazing International singers and stage directors as well as continuing to work with her wonderful teacher Raymond Connell. Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It debuted in Prague in 1787. Its based on the legend of Don Juan, a Spanish lothario who was obsessed with the conquest of women. The opera tells the story of Don Giovanni, his man-servant Leporello, Donna Elvira his scorned lover, Donna Anna and Don Ottavio - a young engaged couple, and the Commendatore - Donna Anna's father who is slain by Don Giovanni. Mozart's incredible score paired with a lively libretto by Lorenzo di Ponte make Don Giovanni one of the most performed operas in the world.
This is soprano Ellie Dehn's third appearance with our company, now making her role debut as Alice Ford in Verdi's Falstaff. In this interview with Nicolas Reveles she spends a little time talking about her career, as well as the role and the current rehearsal process. After Mimi and Donna Anna this is a role with rather different challenges! Enjoy.

Rita Hunter sings arias from Aida,Macbeth, Forza, Gioconda,Tosca, Fidelio, Idomeneo,Cavalleria, Schicchi (in English), and "My Hero" (from the Chocolate Soldier), and " Tosti's "Goodbye." Rita Hunter CBE (15 August 1933 – 29 April 2001) was a British operatic dramatic soprano. Rita Hunter was born in Wallasey, Merseyside and lived in Limekiln Lane. During her childhood, her parents, both fans ofmusic-hall, would take Rita to many of the final tours of the last music-hall artists.[1] She studied singing in Liverpool with Edwin Francis and later in London with Redvers Llewellyn and Clive Carey. She joined the Sadler's Wells Opera Company in 1957, and sang in the chorus with them for two years before touring with the Carl Rosa Opera Company. She then obtained a grant from the Countess of Munster Trust, which made it possible for her to study for a year with Dame Eva Turner. After this she went back to the Company as a principal, where her roles included Senta in The Flying Dutchman, Musetta in La bohème, Odabella in Attila, Fata Morgana in The Love for Three Oranges, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Amelia in A Masked Ball, Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, Elizabeth in Don Carlos and Leonora in Il trovatore. Rita Hunter will be remembered as one of the major Wagnerian sopranos of the later 20th century, especially for her performances as all three of the Brünnhildes in the Ring cycle, conducted by Reginald Goodall at the English National Opera.[2] In this production she was partnered by Alberto Remedios (who had studied singing at the same time as Hunter inLiverpool with Edwin Francis) as Siegfried, and Norman Bailey as Wotan. The recordings based on this production, with the same artists, are regarded as amongst the finest available, even though they are sung, in accordance with ENO practice, in English. In an interview in 1979 Hunter expressed her dissatisfaction with having to sing the same part in both English and the original languages. "I find it very difficult learning a role in different languages. The phrasing is different - one has to take breath in a different place." She also recalled having to know "Santuzza in three different English translations as well as in Italian". She found Italian easier to learn and memorize than German.[1] In the Glen Byam Shaw Ring production, the quality of Hunter's singing and interpretation enabled audiences to set aside her outsize stature (which conformed to all prejudices about Wagnerian sopranos), and few have matched her conviction as Brünnhilde. She made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera on December 19, 1972, in Die Walküre, with great success (conductor Erich Leinsdorf and Dame Gwyneth Jones as Sieglinde). She performed the GötterdämmerungBrünnhilde at Covent Garden, and also sang the part of Senta there at short notice. Hunter's later Metropolitan Opera performances of Die Walküre in 1975 featured Birgit Nilsson as Sieglinde and were conducted by Sixten Ehrling. She also performed in Wagner and other operas in Munich, Seattle, New Orleans, San Francisco, and with the Welsh National Opera. In a memorable San Francisco season, she played the roles of Norma and Sieglinde in the same week. Among conductors with whom she worked whom she found sympathetic to the singer, she cited Carlo Felice Cillario andRichard Bonynge.[1] In 1980 she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 1981 she moved to Sydney and joined the Australian Opera. In 1986 she published her memoirs, Wait till the sun shines, Nellie. She died in Sydney in 2001, aged 67.
