Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Seftel joins the Chuck Toddcast to discuss All the Empty Rooms, his devastating Netflix documentary short that chronicles the untouched bedrooms of children killed in school shootings since Sandy Hook. Seftel describes a country that has grown numb to over 100 school shootings just this year — where the reporting cycle moves on before victims' stories can truly be told — and explains how the simple, visceral act of standing in a dead child's bedroom forces viewers to feel something that statistics never could. He reveals that many parents have kept these rooms exactly as their children left them, preserving even the smell, creating what amounts to sacred spaces frozen in time.Chuck draws the parallel to the decision to show Emmett Till's open casket, and Seftel argues these painful stories must be told regardless of how uncomfortable they make us, because imagery can be more powerful than the spoken word. What makes the film's approach so striking — and so strategically effective — is what it leaves out. The word "gun" is never mentioned, a deliberate choice to avoid triggering the political reflexes that shut down conversation before it starts. And it's working: Seftel shares that a Second Amendment enthusiast changed his mind after seeing the photos of empty rooms, and even a Sandy Hook denier reached out after watching. The film's funders didn't want to make money — they wanted to make change — and Netflix's global distribution has given it a massive reach. Seftel says the conversation has to start with one simple question — "How do we keep kids safe at school?" — and that the film intentionally got better as it got shorter, stripping away prescription and polemic to let the silence of those rooms do the work. Chuck Todd breaks down the Texas primary results and finds a political landscape that should terrify the Republican establishment. Ken Paxton and John Cornyn are headed to a runoff on the GOP side, but the headline number is stunning: Democrats posted a higher overall vote total than Republicans in the Texas primary, a seismic signal in what has long been the country's biggest red state. He credits Talarico's viral Colbert moment with giving him a massive boost, notes that Latino voters broke decisively for Talarico over Jasmine Crockett — who ran an unconventional campaign and is unlikely to concede quickly — and argues that a Paxton vs. Talarico general election would genuinely put Texas in play. He walks through the strategic calculus: history favors Paxton in a runoff, Cornyn has outperformed polling but a Cornyn nomination would draw less national Democratic investment in the race, and Democrats should have the budget to compete in Texas regardless — because Texas is "nice to have" for Democrats but "must have" for Republicans, and if Democrats win even once there, it opens the floodgates. He also flags Dan Crenshaw losing after failing to secure Trump's endorsement, the razor-thin two-vote margin for the state senate campaign in North Carolina, and a broader pattern of bad developments piling up for the GOP — capped by Trump stoking voter skepticism with an unpopular Iran war. His verdict: this is the worst possible start to an election cycle for Republicans, because it's easy to start a war and very hard to end one. Then, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Seftel joins the Chuck Toddcast to discuss All the Empty Rooms, his devastating Netflix documentary short that chronicles the untouched bedrooms of children killed in school shootings since Sandy Hook. Seftel describes a country that has grown numb to over 100 school shootings just this year — where the reporting cycle moves on before victims' stories can truly be told — and explains how the simple, visceral act of standing in a dead child's bedroom forces viewers to feel something that statistics never could. “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalm 46:10 In our bustling lives, it's easy to overlook the power of silence. Picture an empty hall where even the softest whisper can resonate, creating a symphony of echoes. Just like the prophet Elijah experienced in 1 Kings 19:11-13, this stillness allows us to hear the voice of God, often more profound than any spoken word. "Be still, and know that I am God," declares Psalm 46:10, urging us to quiet our hearts and minds to invite His presence. Setting aside just five to ten minutes for silence each day can lead to remarkable clarity and insight. It's in these quiet moments that we can reflect on our thoughts, hopes, and dreams as we navigate the landscape of our hearts. When we intentionally embrace the stillness, we create room for profound wisdom to surface — much like how an empty canvas invites the artist's brush to create a masterpiece. 1 Kings 19:11-13 says, "...After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” As Revelation 3:20 reminds us, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Our willingness to pause and listen opens the door for His grace to flood our lives. In silence, we learn to recognize those gentle nudges of inspiration and reassurance from God, just as St. John of the Cross suggests that silence is "God's first language."  Moreover, Dallas Willard once said, “Stillness is strength incubating.” It is in these serene moments that our inner strength is nurtured, allowing us to grow spiritually and emotionally. Encourage yourself to take that time today; let your thoughts flow onto paper after five to ten precious minutes of quiet. You may be surprised by the richness of what you discover as you open your heart in your quietness. Amen. Revelation 3:20 says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me." Amen. Prayer for the Day!Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of silence, for in it we find Your presence. Brethren, I pray that in your busy schedules, may the Holy Spirit help you to hear God's still and small voices — amid the noise of life. May He teach you to pause, to be still, and to recognize His gentle leading. May your hearts be tender, your minds attentive, and your steps aligned with His perfect will. When confusion rises, may His Word be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. When weariness presses in, may His presence be your rest and His joy your strength. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Everyone loves the idea of a packed event that fuels connections, drives referrals, and elevates your brand. But if we're honest, most real estate events flop.  The vibe is off, the wrong people are in the room, and the whole thing feels like a desperate networking contest instead of a place where top producers actually want to be. Here's the truth: it's not about the headcount, the flashy theme, or how many business cards you collect. It's about the energy you bring, the quality of the people in the room, and the intentionality before, during, and after the event.  When you master that, events stop being a gamble and become your most powerful business development tool. Is your event being too self-centered the reason no one's attending? What other mistakes are agents and organizations making with their events?  In this episode, Orlando Real Producers and branding expert, Aaron Ludin, returns.  Aaron's built one of the top five franchises in the entire company, not just by publishing, but by throwing some of the most impactful real estate events in the country. He has cracked the code on why people show up, what makes them stay, and how to make sure your events never fall flat. Today, we dig into Aaron's event formula, before, during, and after, and uncover the mindset shifts and tactical strategies that separate events people remember from events they regret.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  Stop chasing the wrong crowd Too many vendors waste time nurturing “someday” agents. Why should you stop offering free consulting to people who won't move the needle and instead double down on the ones already doing business? Stack the deck A successful event doesn't happen by chance. How do you build in guaranteed attendance? Is hoping people show up the fastest path to empty rooms?  Connection > performance Your job as the event host isn't to be the star of the party. It's to work the room like a puppeteer. What should you be doing during the event?  Follow-up is the forgotten superpower The real ROI of an event often happens afterward. How do you capture feedback, synthesize lessons, and turn one event into a stepping stone for the next?   Guest Bio Aaron Ludin is a speaker, author, coach, and owner of Orlando Branding Agency, and Publisher of Orlando Real Producers. Original Release Date: 08/29/2022   On today's show we'll discuss a classic empty room – an opportunity ignored by most investors. In this case, we dive into the investment case for Venezuela, a non-starter for pretty much every institution because of the country's autocratic political regime, sanctions, and headline risk. But alongside those known risks are the potential for significant rewards. Rodrigo Bitar is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 3B1 Partners, the leading private equity fund making growth investments in Venezuela. 3B1 invests in high-quality companies with leading positions in basic industries, while looking to capture a change in macroeconomic conditions in the country. Our conversation covers Rodrigo's upbringing in Chile, professional background, and investment opportunity in Venezuela. We discuss Venezuela's sanctions, economic contraction, and dollarization of the economy. We then turn to investing in the country, including sourcing, due diligence, and an example of a recent transaction. We close with a discussion of the upside and risks to investing in Venezuela. On today's show, we'll discuss another empty room – an opportunity ignored by most investors because they either don't want to or can't participate. We've shared conversations under this theme about a range of forgotten opportunities from specific emerging markets to biotech. Previous episodes are available under the mini-series or topic search at capitalallocators.com. This time around, we discuss a room that was overflowing two years ago, has been abandoned since, and might be coming back once again - crypto and blockchain technologies.   My guest is Chris Dixon, a general partner at a16z and one of the leading voices and investors in the space. Chris recently published a book entitled Read Write Own, which explains the history, thesis, features, and importance of blockchain technology in his classic framework-driven, non-technical style.   Our conversation covers aspects of the book, including the history of the internet, rationale for blockchains, and tokenomics. We then turn to what's happened in the ignored space since the fall of FTX across stablecoins, NFTs, DeFi, Bitcoin ETFs, regulation, and the devotees still involved in the space. On today's show we'll discuss another empty room – an opportunity ignored by most investors because they either don't want to or can't participate. Andy Acker is a Portfolio Manager at our anchor sponsor, Janus Henderson Investors, where he manages the firm's healthcare strategies. Janus Henderson is a global asset manager with $300B in assets under management, and Andy oversees the firm's Global Life Sciences strategy and its Biotechnology strategy. Biotech stocks have been crushed despite significant advances in drug development, making it a proverbial empty room with only specialists and contrarians left standing. Our conversation starts with Andy's path to becoming a healthcare investor, scientific innovation over his time at Janus Henderson, translation of science into commercial success for businesses, and the 90/90 rule for how stocks behave. We then turn to his investment process across filtering ideas, research, assessment of management teams and commercial success, portfolio construction, trading around names, and private crossover investing. We close with Andy's perspective on opportunities and risks to the space from here, and green shoots he sees that might fill seats in the empty room.
