Ever wondered how the resilience of the human neck could be the unsung hero in the battle against sports-related concussions and CTE? That's the revelation Mike Jolly brings to the table with the Iron Neck, a device designed with the well-being of athletes in mind. As a former UCLA football and wrestling enthusiast, Mike shares his compelling journey and the aha-moment that led to the invention that's shaking up strength training. We unravel the science behind neck strength as a critical factor for reducing concussion risk, challenging traditional perspectives on athletic preparation, and revealing how Mike's innovation is carving out space in gyms across the globe for a safer future in sports.Navigating the intense world of youth sports, we take a sobering look at the long-term impact of underreported concussions and the cultural hurdles that keep young athletes from speaking up. It's a candid discussion, sprinkled with heartfelt anecdotes, that uncovers the widespread implications of head injuries beyond the professional arena. Learn how strengthening often-neglected muscle groups like the neck can offer an armor of protection, and why introducing this regimen is vital across all genders and sports disciplines. The conversation takes a turn towards the kinetic chain connecting neck and core strength, shedding light on societal issues like 'tech neck' and the importance of postural health in our tech-dominated world. For anyone questioning the relevance of neck strength outside the realm of contact sports, the Iron Neck's story of skepticism to acclaim is a testament to its broader applications. From alleviating pain to improving mobility, Mike and I discuss how embracing a proactive approach to fitness can mitigate the health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles. Parents, coaches, and anyone with a stake in the sports community will find value in this episode, as we highlight the critical nature of protecting the brain and the role of neck strength in a holistic approach to athlete welfare. Welcome to a transformative session where we dive deep into the significance of honoring our commitments to ourselves. Here, you'll learn that true discipline doesn't emerge overnight; rather, it's a product of 10,000 commitments, consistently kept. As the old saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day." Similarly, an unwavering sense of self-worth is constructed brick by brick, with every commitment we uphold. Why is it crucial to keep the promises we make to ourselves? Each time you stick to a commitment, you send a clear message to your psyche: “I matter. I respect myself enough to follow through.” Over time, these repeated actions lay the foundation for genuine self-respect. Moreover, when you consistently make and maintain these personal commitments, you develop an internal sense of reliability. You become your own rock. Our health is a primary area where these commitments manifest. You'll possess actionable steps, ready to be implemented, ensuring that you consistently honor the promises you make to yourself. More importantly, you'll come to recognize the monumental shift that arises in self-perception when you become a person who follows through, consistently and unerringly. In conclusion, respecting oneself isn't merely about positive affirmations or self-care routines. It's deeply rooted in the way we treat our personal commitments. Just as we wouldn't break promises made to loved ones, we must grant ourselves the same courtesy. After all, the relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship in your life. So, as you journey with us through this video, remember: to truly respect yourself is to uphold each commitment, to see each promise through, and to build a life where discipline and self-confidence intertwine seamlessly.Join us on this enlightening journey and discover the unparalleled power of commitments. Ever wondered how understanding your body can unlock your health potential? In an enlightening conversation with martial artist and former classmate Tom Richards, we explore the fascinating world of fascia, the connective tissue in our bodies. Tom draws on centuries-old Eastern wisdom on breath and its validation through modern science. We assess the transformative potential of breath as a point of leverage in changing our state of being. From there, we examine how an overdeveloped neck can limit your breath and how understanding back breathing can help mitigate tension in the upper back. Our discussion also addresses how to appropriately confront shoulder impingement and maintain pelvic mobility. We conclude our enlightening conversation by revisiting the concept of Rolfing, while also considering other holistic approaches to health and fitness. Tom elucidates how these techniques can address chronic injuries and advance overall health and wellbeing. He also discusses the importance of "Making Music" and not just playing the notes on the page (a metaphor for how to workout or spend quality time with loved ones). I love the self improvement, piece of working out and aspiring to be better in sports and in performance. When I became a certified personal trainer, I fell in love with helping other people, find that same passion and enthusiasm for improving themselves through fitness. The same goes with public speaking. The opportunity to get on stage and speak to hundreds of people about how they can prove themselves one little habit at a time through physical activity, lifestyle, change, habits, etc. is the culmination of 48 years of personal growth, helping others, and traveling the world, learning about people, cultures, and things that hold us back.""My purpose with this podcast is the help men between 40 - 60 maximize this chapter of their life so they can be strong, healthy, disciplined, and purposeful with how they live each day" Use this link to get a 30 minute discovery call scheduled with Barton if you're interested in his 12 week coaching course. https://calendly.com/bartbryan/30minFor more information about Iron Neck products and to receive a 15% discount on your order, use this link -> https://bit.ly/46ZmUhKTo get the Free weekly workout PDF, just email Barton: Barton@bartonguybryan.comTo hire Barton for a Speaking Event, Click here: https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fcalendly.com%2Fbartbryan%2F30-minute-meeting-clone&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AOvVaw2a_wCbF6yDMtR_5pNdIg4PBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Become a Patreon Sponsor of the podcast for extra cool stuff including a Free weekly workout program by clicking here - https://themindsetforge.supercast.com/v1?
Barton sits down with David to talk about his path as an athlete, father, and fitness instructor. David has completed 17 Ironman Triathlons including the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. They have taught David about discipline, mindset, focusing on the "controllables" and much more. He is also 5 ½ years sober and so much of who he is and what he prioritized today comes from his sobriety and being the best father he can be for his two teenage kids. Behind his exterior of muscles and a big smile, Austin local David Garza is just as compassionate at heart as he lets on. As one of Austin's most motivated fitness instructors, Garza gladly admits to spending time surfing Pinterest for motivating quotes to share with others. Referred to as the “Tony Robbins of spin” by some of his clients, Garza cherishes being able to make others feel special, whether that's by playing someone's favorite song during a class or sitting down with someone for coffee to help them tackle the obstacles in their way to a healthier lifestyle. “I have been pretty blessed to have found this career, where I can use music and fitness and really talk in a deep way of how we are doing,” Garza says. “And, because I have gone through some ridiculously challenging things in my life, I am able to look at somebody and say ‘Hey man, I get it. Let's try and figure out what's going wrong, pinpoint it and see what we can do in a positive way to figure out what we need to get done to get you out of this funk.'”When Garza came out of college, his lifestyle included smoking and drinking, and at one point, he even weighed close to 300 pounds. Coming up on four years of being sober, Garza says he can consider his past experiences struggling with nutrition and unhealthy habits as a blessing, because they make it easy for him to be able to discuss topics that can typically be hard to talk about. “I get to share with a lot of people who are struggling, and I have been down that path, and I feel like I can truly relate to somebody struggling with lots of different things,” Garza says. “While I know there are a lot of challenges out there, I also know that you can overcome those challenges, because you want to be a little bit better than you were yesterday.”Garza is heading to Nice, France in September to compete in another Ironman Triathlon World Championships. To contact David, find him on Instagram @davidgarza1He is currently teaching classes at HIT Athletic in North Central AuUse this link to get a 30 minute discovery call scheduled with Barton if you're interested in his 12 week coaching course. https://calendly.com/bartbryan/30minFor more information about Iron Neck products and to receive a 15% discount on your order, use this link -> https://bit.ly/46ZmUhKTo get the Free weekly workout PDF, just email Barton: Barton@bartonguybryan.comTo hire Barton for a Speaking Event, Click here: https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fcalendly.com%2Fbartbryan%2F30-minute-meeting-clone&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AOvVaw2a_wCbF6yDMtR_5pNdIg4PBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Become a Patreon Sponsor of the podcast for extra cool stuff including a Free weekly workout program by clicking here - https://themindsetforge.supercast.com/v1?

Neck Training Solutions with Iron NeckFAKTR Podcast Episode 43Featuring: Jacob Nelson, CSCSEPISODE SUMMARYIf you're like most MSK practitioners, neck pain is a common complaint you see in your office. Many providers treat whiplash injuries and "text neck" along with more serious issues like chronic migraines, cervicogenic headaches and concussion, all of which can stem from dysfunction, trauma or weakness in the cervical spine. And if you treat neck pain in your office, you've more than likely heard of Iron Neck.Iron Neck started with a controversial idea: What if neck strength could help reduce whiplash and in turn reduce concussion risk in athletes? So their initial goal was to get Iron Neck devices into NFL and NCAA weight rooms. What started with a focus on athlete safety has evolved into a modern approach to fixing the crippling posture of modern society. And now these wearable neck training devices are utilized in private healthcare clinics, hospitals and by the sports medicine staffs of 40+ NFL and NCAA programs. In this two part training we will answer the question: What does it take to have a strong neck and why is this important for your patients? In this course, we'll be taking a practical look at evaluating, training and finding possible solutions for strengthening and rehabilitation of the neck and its support system. And who better to speak to this than Jacob Nelson, Director of Education for Iron Neck.ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:Jacob Nelson is a Kinesiologist, Strength & Conditioning Coach, and Athlete holding a lifetime obsession with strength and learning. He currently works with The Iron Neck as Director of Education, Programming and Regional Manager as well as the Head of Strength & Conditioning for the American Raptors Rugby team. In both positions the goal is to blend functional neurology with standards of practice in order to make a performance based training program that enhances all biological systems. Jacob began his career as a Strength & Conditioning Assistant at Humboldt State University where he received a degree in Kinesiology with a Teaching/Coaching emphasis. In 2009, he received Strength & Conditioning All-American and CSCS designations from the NSCA, as well as an internship at NSCA Headquarters. In over 10 years in the field, he has worked with youth, high school, college, professional, and Olympic athletes as a strength and sport coach. Dr. Tom Teter aims to change this dynamic and break down the barriers practitioners face when deciding if incorporating fitness is right for their practice. In this two-part episode, we will discuss the body of evidence and research that supports fitness as an adjunct to therapy, defining fitness, rehabilitation and the grey area between the two along with the reasons that rehab systems fail and the six stages of care.We will discuss how fitness isn't just about improving capacity, but about improving overall health and how to develop a continuum of care from rehab to fitness and how to determine where your patient falls in the spectrum.Have a question that wasn't covered? It’s that time again for another Ask Me Anything episode. And we must say, listeners sent us a wealth of excellent questions for this round of Ask Me Anything. In today’s podcast, Ken and Dawn answer questions that range from blood-flow restriction to swimming induced pulmonary edema to intermittent fasting to methylene blue to low-carb diets, and much, much more. If you have questions you want to send to Ken and Dawn for an Ask Me Anything episode, email your question to STEM-Talk Producer Randy Hammer at rhammer@ihmc.org. Show notes: [00:02:24] In light of Ken’s former experience in wrestling, a listener asks about wrestlers who perform neck bridges to strengthen their neck. The listener wonders if Ken thinks neck exercises are important and, if so, what does he does in that regard. In his response, Ken mentions a neck-strengthening device, Iron Neck. [00:06:12] A listener asks Ken and Dawn about their morning routines and what scientific journals they read and if they could each give a few book recommendations. [00:08:16] A listener asks Dawn, in light of her accepting a position at the University of North Carolina, if she will continue working with IHMC and co-hosting STEM-Talk. [00:09:13] A listener asks if and how Dawn sees crossover between the research on humans in extreme environments that she did at IHMC, and the clinically oriented work she is doing now. [00:10:37] A listener mentions that they have recently started using blood-flow restriction training in their workouts thanks to STEM-Talk and have enjoyed the experience. The listener goes on to mention, however, that they are noticing they feel light headed when going for a run after a blood-flow restriction resistance workout. The listener asks Ken if he has any knowledge of this phenomenon, or other side effects of blood flow restriction exercise. [00:12:56] A listener mentions that they have just finished reading Denise Minger’s “Death by Food Pyramid” which explains that no nutrition-oriented classes are required for a Harvard medical degree, which is also true of about 70% of medical schools in the nation. The listener goes on to mention, from their own experience, that people are often told to consult their doctor when thinking about the potential benefits of new diets. Doctors and even nutritionists, however, generally prescribe the Mediterranean diet and do not seem to know much about low-carb diets. The listener asks Ken who one should consult when wanting to start a ketogenic diet. In his response, Ken mentions several resources, including the websites Virta Health and Diet Doctor; and the books “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living” as well as “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance.” [00:15:22] A listener, who is a triathlete, asks Dawn for advice about performance in extreme environments, particularly in regards to swimming induced pulmonary edema. They also go on to ask about Dawn’s thoughts on Sildenafil, also known as Viagra. In her response, Dawn mentions a paper by Dr. Richard Moon of Duke University, “Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema: Pathophysiology and Risk Reduction with Sildenafil.” [00:20:08] A listener asks Ken a question about an article they read about a study out of the University of Glasgow that was published in Nature Scientific Reports. The listener highlights a quote from the press release announcing the publication of the article: “There is no magic diet, or magic food, for weight control. Instead, people have to find the best way to eat fewer calories. Low-carb diets have had a lot of hype from media and celebrities, but they are no better than high-carb diets. Their evidence is generally poor, and our earlier research found low-carb diets are associated with some vitamin deficiencies, with more diabetes, not less. We can't stop people cutting carbohydrate, and it may suit some people at least in the short-term, but there should be a health warning.

I have been researching anything and everything that has to do with concussions since suffering my own career-ending head injury ten years ago. That being said, most of the "new" breakthroughs seen on the news are usually old news for me. I have heard of the association between neck strength and concussion risk though my research over the years. And while myself and all of the other athletes who attended West Morris Central High School were blessed to have an amazing strength and conditioning coach, I don't recall ever doing neck strengthening exercises. Therefore, I had very little personal knowledge about neck strength and its role in concussion prevention until talking with Mike Jolly (pictured above) and Robert Sherman (right) from Iron Neck. The Iron Neck was invented by Mike Jolly in 2012 in response to seeing the impact of CTE on former UCLA Football teammates and the rise in concussions in young athletes. As a high school and college football coach, Mike began researching ways to prevent concussions and focused on two growing areas of research: Neck training as a proactive measure to reduce concussion risk. The increased threat of rotational forces on the brain. Below is a video on how the Iron Neck is used and how it is innovating neck strengthening in the world of strength and conditioning: There is no silver bullet when it comes to concussion prevention, but as Robert said in episode 104, "you're only as strong as your weakest link." Below are other topics we touch on in our conversation: The inspiration behind the creation of the first Iron Neck. The neck's role in dissipating forces to the head. The anatomy of neck muscles and how to achieve maximum contraction. Mike's concussion story. Why Mike credits wrestling for staying healthy on the football field. Why helmets aren’t the answer to preventing concussions, especially in sports other than football. What Joey Batson, Head Strength and Conditioning coach at Clemson is doing to prevent concussions. Why females should be prioritizing neck strength. Evolution of neck strengthening (Below). Why neck range of motion + flexibility are also important. Motorsports crumple zone comparison. How strength and conditioning coaches are using the Iron Neck to save time and space. How the Iron Neck allows for transferability to the field and positional strength. Why the biggest impacts come from the ones you don’t see coming. Research on the Iron Neck: In 2014, the Journal of Primary Prevention published a study that tracked 6700 high school athletes in boys' and girls' soccer, basketball, and lacrosse over a 2.5 year period. Researchers captured anthropometric measurements, concussion incidents and athletic exposure data and found "for every one pound increase in neck strength, odds of concussion decreased by 5%." How Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers are using the Iron Neck. Vestibular and vision training, text neck, postural. WHERE CAN YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT The Iron NEck? Below is a video on how the Iron Neck is used and how it is innovating neck strengthening in the world of strength and conditioning:
Join host Amy Zellmer as she chats with Robert Sherman of Iron Neck. Robert Sherman is co-owner of Iron Neck, a company that makes a neck training device used by high school, college and pro teams of almost every sport to reduce concussion risk associated with whiplash. While an increased amount of attention is being paid to neck strength as a critical component to concussion management, it pales in comparison to that paid to helmets and post-concussion protocols. Robert is an advocate for preventive concussion management and travels the country educating professionals on the importance of neck training and the latest research on concussions. Through his interactions with leading strength & conditioning coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, neurologists, athletes and concussion survivors, Robert has gained a comprehensive perspective on the issues all individuals face from concussions to chronic neck pain. Robert, along with two close friends from business school at University of Texas, met Mike Jolly, inventor of the Iron Neck in 2015. A former collegiate football player, Mike developed the Iron Neck in 2012 after seeing some of his UCLA football teammates develop CTE after their NFL careers. In 2011, Mike discovered research associating increased neck strength with reduced concussion risk as well as the increased threat of rotational forces on the brain that contribute to CTE. Since launching a redesigned version of the Iron Neck in 2016, hundreds of teams have incorporated it into their concussion management efforts. Sponsored by: Minnesota Functional Neurology DC
