Guest: Zac Bookman, CEO and Co-Founder of OpenGovThirteen years after co-founding the government transparency startup OpenGov, Zac Bookman is still finding ways to surprise people. In 2023, Cox Enterprises bought the company for $1.8 billion — but as far as Zac is concerned, “we're just getting started.”“ I left the vast majority of my net worth in the company,” he says. “So I'm a believer. I'm all in.”The mission of powering “more effective and accountable government” has been stable since OpenGov's earliest days, and that mission has informed everything from hiring to M&A to the decision to sell. “These people buy and don't sell,” Zac said of Cox. “They're all in on the mission. And they're all in on taking care of employees. So I see a triple win: A win for employees, win for the investors, win for the customers, maybe a quadruple win for me and the management.”Chapters:(01:46) - OpenGov's mission (04:34) - Shrinking the product-market fit (07:34) - Super misson driven (08:59) - Why OpenGov almost shut down (13:08) - Zac's early career (16:16) - Picking (and losing) a CTO (22:50) - Growing upside-down (25:29) - The SPAC backstabber (31:26) - Why Zac didn't get fired (33:24) - Selling in 2024 (37:04) - Growth by acquisition (42:31) - John Chambers and PMF (49:32) - Zac's cross-country bike ride (56:25) - Expectations vs. reality (58:57) - The coup attempt (01:01:59) - Tiring work (01:05:47) - Going to the White House (01:09:40) - DOGE & disrespect (01:12:54) - “We're just getting started” (01:14:18) - Who OpenGov is hiring (and where) (01:15:13) - What “grit” means to Zac Mentioned in this episode: Joe Lonsdale, Cox Enterprises, OpenAI, the Department of Government Efficiency, Workday, H.R. What is the Waverley Street Foundation? The Waverley Street Foundation, founded by Laurene Powell Jobs in 2016, aims to attack climate related issues through funding community-led programs, leading to community action against climate change. The Waverley Street Foundation specifically funds programs related to renewable energy and regenerative agriculture, as these sectors have an immense impact on the environment and vulnerable communities. The Foundation's approach to achieving climate-related goals is unique, as their solutions revolve around investing in prominent community institutions in order to benefit the entire community, showing people that we all benefit from a healthy planet.Regenerative Agriculture as a Climate SolutionRegenerative agriculture is the practice of using farming and agricultural techniques to help reverse climate change, including some techniques that date back to Native American cropping systems and the way in which they interact with the soil. According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the goals of the practice include helping to “mitigate climate change, improve soil health, restore biodiversity, enhance ecosystems, and contribute to human health.” By focusing on the larger community impacts of sustainable farming practices, the Waverley Street Foundation promotes a close connection between people and their food systems. As an example, the Foundation established agreements with local school districts to support fresh and nutritious lunches, bringing local regenerative farmers into the supply chain, thereby improving farmers' economics, and allowing them to decide to continue planting regenerative crops. Other Community-Based Climate InitiativesThe Waverley Street Foundation is also currently working on converting health clinics from being run on diesel fuel to solar in India. This not only reduces pollution and carbon emissions, but can also help make healthcare more affordable for residents, while providing new local jobs installing, fixing, and financing the panels. In order to evade the most devastating climate change impacts, emissions need to be reduced by almost half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. The ultimate goal of the Waverley Street Foundation is to approach climate change with a new outlook: “Cultivating Health, Justice and Joy,” emphasizing the role that climate change has in harming vulnerable communities' everyday lives rather than solely focusing on technical solutions. Jared Blumenfeld, the president of the Waverley Street Foundation, argues that “unless we can make the case to them, that climate action is going to support and make their communities stronger, I don't think we win many of the other arguments.”About Our GuestJared Blumenfeld is the former Secretary of CalEPA and current President of Waverley Street Foundation, the climate philanthropy funded by Laurene Powell Jobs. Blumenfeld also served as Director of San Francisco's Department of Environment. Jared Blumenfeld, President of the Waverley Street Foundation, discusses the foundation's bold mission to deploy $3.5 billion over ten years to tackle climate change. The foundation was created and funded by Laurene Powell Jobs. Blumenfeld explains that unlike traditional foundations with perpetual funding models, Waverley Street's "spend-down" approach reflects the time-sensitive nature of the climate crisis, seeking to galvanize action that can yield transformative results within the short window left to mitigate severe environmental impacts. Blumenfeld highlights the foundation's core focus areas: regenerative agriculture and renewable energy. He stresses that these are not arbitrary selections but fundamental systems that underpin resilience in communities and can foster economic stability while addressing environmental challenges. By focusing on community-driven solutions, the foundation aims to empower local actors who are vital to generating the political will and corporate accountability necessary to drive large-scale change. One of the foundation's defining characteristics is its "bottom-up" strategy, where solutions emerge from local communities rather than being imposed by top-down mandates. Blumenfeld explains that communities must see tangible improvements in their lives from climate interventions. This is especially important to create a groundswell of public support for climate policies, which often stall due to a lack of localized relevance. The foundation has grown significantly in its first two years, evolving from a startup-like team of four to a robust organization with 27 staff members, all aligned with this grassroots ethos. Geographically, the foundation's efforts are concentrated in G20 countries, including the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and South Africa. Blumenfeld emphasizes that the challenge is global, but the foundation has strategically narrowed its focus to these key regions to maximize impact. By prioritizing regenerative agriculture and renewable energy, Waverley Street aims to transform food and energy systems, thereby strengthening both ecological and economic resilience in the face of increasing climate shocks. Blumenfeld also delves into the complexities of deploying such a vast corpus of philanthropic funding. He reflects on the difficulty in identifying high-impact grantmaking opportunities and how the foundation has used a "success mapping" approach to identify promising initiatives that can be scaled globally. Looking ahead, Blumenfeld is optimistic about the momentum building in the climate space, particularly the growing intersection of climate with other philanthropic areas such as education, healthcare, and agriculture. He calls for a broader definition of climate philanthropy, one that engages with a diverse range of sectors and funders who may not traditionally see themselves as part of the climate movement but are crucial to achieving systemic change. It's Monday, August 12th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims shot two Christian men On August 4th, Islamic Fulani militants shot two Christian men in the Bokkos area of the Plateau State in Nigeria, reports International Christian Concern. The men, whose names are being withheld for their protection, are thankful to be alive. One of them said, “To the glory of God, we both survived.” David John, the medical director of the hospital where the men are currently receiving treatment, said the hospital's staff would provide them with the best medical care. Bokkos was one of three Plateau communities targeted by Muslim Fulani militants during the Christmas Eve massacre in 2023. In those attacks, more than 200 Christians were killed, including 148 people in Bokkos. According to Open Doors, Nigeria is the sixth most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Pray for God's justice in Nigeria. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” Ukrainian navy takes out Russian gas rig Ukraine blasted a Russian gas rig in the Black Sea near the Dnipro River, killing 40 Russian soldiers, reports The U.S. Sun. Dramatic footage shows a giant fireball erupting from the Russian headquarters after it was targeted by the Ukrainian Navy. The decimated rig was packed with “reconnaissance equipment” to help with Russia's war effort. Ukrainian officials claimed the gas rig used to be controlled by their military, but had become occupied by Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces in recent years. Harris leads Trump in 3 battleground states Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump in three crucial battleground states, according to new surveys by The New York Times and Siena College. This is the latest indication of a dramatic reversal in standing for Democrats after President Biden's departure from the presidential race. Harris is ahead of Trump by four percentage points in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, 50 percent to 46 percent among likely voters in each state. The surveys were conducted from Aug. 5 to 9. Trump: Kamala Harris not smart enough to hold news conference Despite her rise in the polls, Donald Trump does not think Kamala Harris is smart enough to hold a news conference. TRUMP: “She can't do a news conference. She doesn't know how to do a news conference. She's not smart enough to do a news conference. I'm sorry. We need smart people to lead this country because our country has never been in this danger before, both economically and from an outside perspective.” Kamala Harris: “Everybody needs to be woke!” A video of Vice President Kamala Harris declaring that “everybody needs to be woke” in 2017 has resurfaced and gone viral on social media, reports Media Research Center. Appearing with philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple Founder Steve Jobs, Harris spoke at the 2017 Recode Code Conference. Listen. HARRIS: "We have to stay woke. Like everybody needs to be woke. You can talk about if you're the woke-est or woke-er, but just stay more woke than less woke." Send letters to 6 imprisoned pro-lifers Pro-life rescuers either in or awaiting prison have made – and are making – gigantic sacrifices for practicing non-violent civil disobedience at abortion mills on behalf of their pre-born brothers and sisters. By giving up their emotional support networks of family, friends, and colleagues, these pro-life heroes are in danger of a loneliness that can be felt even – or especially – in a crowded prison cafeteria or yard. Some of them have been handed years-long sentences, reports LifeSiteNews.com. You can send letters to six of these imprisoned pro-life heroes through addresses you can access through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. You can send letters to Jonathan Darnel, Will Goodman, Lauren Handy, Heather Idoni, Jean Marshall, and Bevelyn Williams at their respective prisons. Even a 2-3 sentence letter, which would take no time at all, especially from your children, would lift their spirits. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “ Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up.” Please read the 10 tips for writing them and sign the prayer pledge for the pro-life rescuers facing a decade in prison. MacGyver-minded officer saves toddler And finally, from Kansas comes the story of a quick-thinking rescue that hauled a 14-month-old toddler from a would-be tomb at the bottom of a drain pipe, reports Good News Network. The terrifying ordeal was caught on camera and saw a Moundridge Police Department officer build on the spot a makeshift catchpole typically used for pulling varmints out of hard-to-reach places. Secured under his shoulders, the loop of rope at the end of the catchpole was able to lift the boy, named Bently, out from where he was trapped 10 feet down a section of 12-inch-wide PVC pipe that had been buried vertically. The parents said they called 9-1-1 just before 2:00 p.m. when they realized Bently had fallen into the PVC hole. Blake, the father's boy, described his emotions before the rescue to the local news station. BLAKE: “Looking down at him as he was screaming, he wanted out of there, he wanted help and you can't do anything. It's complete helplessness. It's horrifying, it's haunting, to feel so helpless, knowing that your child is in serious need of help.” When police, fire department, and EMS arrived at the family's home about 40 miles northwest of Wichita, Officer Ronnie Wagner had an idea. WAGNER: “I threaded some rope through a PVC pipe, tied a knot at the end of it so that it would slip, and we used it to wrap around under his shoulders here and lift him out of the hole.” Watch a video of the dramatic rescue through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. The toddler's father was deeply grateful. BLAKE: “It's a blessing and a miracle to have a First Responder that lives right behind us. There aren't words to express our gratitude.” Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you … and will rejoice over you with singing.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, August 12th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Harry's guest this week is Raffi Krikorian, chief technology officer and managing director at Emerson Collective, the social change organization founded by Laurene Powell Jobs. Krikorian is the former vice president of engineering at Twitter (now X), where he was responsible for getting rid of the Fail Whale and making the company's backend infrastructure more reliable; the former director of Uber's Advanced Technology Center in Pittsburgh, where he oversaw the launch of the world's first fleet of self-driving cars; and then the chief technology officer at the Democratic National Committee, where he helped rebuild the party's technology infrastructure after the Russian hacking debacle of 2016. At Emerson Collective, Krikorian built the technology organization, leads the development of data products, and works to upgrade the back offices of the non-profits Emerson works with. On top of all that, he recently launched a podcast called Technically Optimistic, where he's taking a deep dive into the way AI is challenging us all to think differently about the future of work, education, policy, regulation, creativity, copyright, and many other areas. The show is a must-listen for anyone who cares about how we can build on AI to transform society for the better while minimizing the collateral damage. Harry talked with Krikorian about why he moved to Emerson Collective, why and how he started the podcast, and what he really thinks about what government should be doing to prepare for the waves of social change AI will bring. For a full transcript of this episode, please visit our episode page at http://www.glorikian.com/podcast Please rate and review The Harry Glorikian Show on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! It's no surprise that Anne Marie Burgoyne, managing director of Emerson Collective, had a long line of people forming to meet with her following her session at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas Wednesday. Burgoyne leads philanthropy for this social change organization started by Laurene Powell Jobs. Devex's Kate Warren spoke with Burgoyne about Emerson Collective's unique approach, its growing work on climate through the Waverley Street Foundation, and how Emerson Collective looks at the role of artificial intelligence in social change. In high school, Reed Jobs was a summer intern in oncology labs while his dad, the late Apple co-founder and tech icon Steve Jobs, was battling pancreatic cancer. In his biography, Steve is quoted as calling his son's interest in biotech the “silver lining” of his illness – and making cancer “non-lethal” has become Reed's life mission. In 2023, he spun off the venture capital firm Yosemite from Emerson Collective (the philanthropy and family office founded by his mother, Laurene Powell Jobs) to focus on cancer research and biotech. Kara and Reed talk about the research-to-start up pipeline, how he's been influenced by both of his parents, and whether AI, mRNA or CRISPR will be game changers for cancer patients. Questions? Today, our guest is acclaimed director and screenwriter Ava DuVernay, known for the Oscar-nominated films “Selma” and “13th.” Her latest film “Origin” is an adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson's 2020 bestseller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” We explore how she adapted the ideas of a nonfiction book into a gripping narrative film and why – instead of major Hollywood studios – DuVernay secured funding for “Origin” from philanthropists, including the Ford Foundation, Melinda Gates, Laurene Powell Jobs and Anne Wojcicki. From family offices and institutional LPs to private equity, government funding, and more, we take a deep dive into the world of capital and its critical role in driving innovation and progress. Michael Bruce serves as the Senior Director of Venture Investing, Environment and Energy at Emerson Collective. Emerson Collective, founded by Laurene Powell Jobs, is a game-changer in education, immigration reform, the environment, media and journalism, and health. We were excited for this one because Emerson Collective is an interesting organization operating holistically across these areas. They also happen to be doing a lot in climate at a surprising scale, but they have not spoken too frequently about what they're up to publicly. So this was a special opportunity, and Michael does not disappoint. In this episode, we cover: [2:14] An overview of Emerson Collective [4:08] Michael's journey and what led him to work in climate[11:08] His thoughts on energy vs. climate change [16:56] Emerson's early climate efforts [19:26] The firm's dedicated pool of capital and team structure[22:29] Emerson's approach within climate and how it's evolved over time [25:41] Thoughts on philanthrocapitalism [27:15] Types of risk Emerson is comfortable taking [32:11] Emerson's criteria for selecting climate investments [37:31] Michael's thoughts on the future of oil and gas [40:21] His views on the carbon market[45:28] Why market sources alone aren't enough to address the climate crisisGet connected: Jason Jacobs X / LinkedInMichael Bruce LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on Oct 26, 2023 (Published on Nov 29, 2023)

For years, Solano County residents wondered who was secretly spending hundreds of millions of dollars to buy up family farms in their community. The rumors swirled: was Disney planning a new theme park? Was it some sort of Chinese government land-grab? In August, the mystery was solved: the New York Times reported that a group of tech moguls including billionaire venture capitalist Michael Moritz, philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and were making the purchases as part of a plan to build a city from scratch, on 50,000 acres of agricultural land. They've now gone public, under the name California Forever, and are promising to bring benefits like good paying local jobs, solar farms, and open space. But many questions remain. In this hour of Forum, we'll talk to the group's CEO as well as one of the local lawmakers raising concerns about the plan. Guests: J.K. Dineen, Bay Area housing reporter, San Francisco Chronicle Jan Sramek, Founder and CEO, California Forever Catherine Moy, Mayor, Fairfield

Listening to this young school and community leader will give you hope for a tomorrow that can so often be difficult to find. Erin Whalen, born and raised in Santa Monica, California is co-founder and Executive Director of Da Vinci RISE High School. We're sharing Kara's September 2022 conversation with Tim Cook, Sir Jony Ive and Laurene Powell Jobs on the life and legacy of Steve Jobs. It's one of Kara's favorite conversations of the year, and one in which she cried (though she denies it). Kara handpicked this trio to join her for her final Code interview. Cook, the CEO of Apple, worked with Jobs for decades and succeeded him as CEO. Ive, now co-founder of the creative collective LoveFrom, collaborated with Jobs on the design many of Apple's game-changing products, like the iPod and the iPhone. And Powell Jobs, the founder and president of Emerson Collective, was married to Jobs for 20 years. In this wide-ranging conversation, they cover design, ethics and, of course, Kara's favorite topic: death. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard made headlines recently when he announced that he and his family had transferred their $3 billion stake in the storied outdoor gear company to a special purpose trust and nonprofit that would give away $100 million a year, specifically to environmental causes. Patagonia has a long history of donating at least one percent of its profits – and 100% of profits made on Black Friday – to grassroots environmental non-profits. Yet even with this massive gift, and Laurene Powell Jobs' own recent $3.5 billion pledge, climate philanthropy still only accounts for a small fraction of all charitable giving. This Thanksgiving weekend, we look back to our 2016 interview with Yvon Chouinard and bring the story up to date with Inside Philanthropy's Michael Kavate. The Atlantic, which is owned by billionaire Laurene Powell Jobs and run by neoconservative war propagandist Jeffrey Goldberg, has published a pair of articles that are appalling even by its own standards. Reading by Tim Foley.
On today's Breitbart News Daily podcast, we begin with some details about Alex's Halloween with young children and how some masked freaks tried to ruin it for everyone. Meanwhile, Laurene Powell Jobs' "The Atlantic" magazine has called for an amnesty for all of the totalitarians who gave terrible recommendations that caused you and your children to suffer during the COVID pandemic. Enraging! Alex then connects the dishonest virtue signaling by the Left to their inevitable political failings this election season. Plus, much more in the opening, including the latest details of the Paul Pelosi attack. Is this apparently pro-BLM/pro-LGBTQ/pro-hemp nudist advocate from Berkeley the new face of MAGA? No. Then, Tina Descovich and Tiffany Justice, the co-founders of ‘Moms for Liberty' (momsforliberty.org) join us to discuss the new teachers' union report from Peter Schweizer's Government Accountability Institute (GAI) that reveals an overwhelming amount of union dues going to left-wing causes despite a surprising number of non-Democrats among their membership.
On today's Breitbart News Daily podcast, we run down the latest polls that indicate a red wave might be turning into a red tsunami. We play a fair bit of audio of Pres. Joe Biden this morning. He was in rare form - actually he was his usual self - on Laurene Powell Jobs's "NowThis News" network. We learned that he really likes trans surgeries for children, he wants more of your money to pay foreign governments to fight for environmental justice, and he can't remember the big abortion decision that shaped the issue in America for the last 50 years, and so much more. We run down a lot of horrifying crime from over the weekend and illegal immigration news. These are deeply connected and we explain. Former OH Secretary of State and current Chair of the Center for Election Integrity at the America First Policy Institute, Ken Blackwell, joins us. He is a good man with an important new initiative to fight for election integrity that might make our voting system a little more fair.
Tim Cook, Sir Jony Ive, and Laurene Powell Jobs unpack the life and work of Steve Jobs, the legendary Apple co-founder who changed consumer technology forever. Jobs was a regular guest at Code conferences, appearing at the first All Things D in 2003. Over the years on the Code stage, he predicted the end of the PC era, bantered with his arch-rival Bill Gates, and famously denied— and later teased— plans for the iPhone. Now, he's remembered by three luminaries who knew him best: Cook, his protege and successor; Ives, who translated his ideas into iconic designs; and Powell Jobs, founder of Emerson Collective and Jobs' wife of 20 years, until his death in 2011.
