On our political radar this week… Canadian officials cut the ribbon today to herald Monday's scheduled opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge. Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford spoke directly of the latest Trump assault on America's number one trading partner, saying “ Ontario will be ready to respond in any new American tariffs, will not back down, and will negotiate from a position of strength as a top trading partner, more than half of the United States.” Because of Trump's latest tariff tantrum no Americans were invited to the event. At recording time the Bridge is set to open for vehicular traffic on Monday. Instead of presiding at a joint ribbon cutting which had been planned for next Monday midway between Detroit and Windsor, Trump will be a few miles north for a campaign rally. His campaign visit: an admission that Michigan Democrats could flip 3 Republican-held seats in Congress. For Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, it could be a political nightmare. He'll have no choice but to join hands with a President whose approval rating is a pathetic 33 percent…and falling. On the Democratic side of the Senate race, Governor Whitmer has endorsed Haley Stevens. Polls show Stevens with a slight lead over Abdul El-Sayed … and El-Sayed drawing large crowds this last week at rallies featuring Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But the endorsement comes with nearly 700-thousand absentee ballots already been received by local clerks, and another 1.2-million absentee ballots have been issued but not yet returned. Early in-person voting begins on tomorrow. Defense Secretary (and former Fox & Friends B-Team talker) Pete Hegseth took a trip to Capitol Hill. The hostile reception he got from the Senate Appropriations Committee was enough to drive a man to drink. Hegseth wants another $90-billion to continue Trump's War of Choice in Iran … and Senators made it clear they weren't buying what he was selling. The normally soft-spoken Senator Gary Peters pulled no punches in lambasting the former Fox News weekend couch talker. Hegseth claims the Iran War has cost around $37-billion so far. Of course, with Trump's massive budget deficit estimated at 2-trillion dollars, the entire cost of the war goes on the federal credit card to be paid by future generations. And Senator Elissa Slotkin says the real cost is more … 200-billion dollars or more.  The State Board of Canvassers voted to put the Money out of Politics proposal on the November ballot. If approved by voters and if it gets past a court challenge, the proposal would ban political spending by regulated utilities and companies with state contracts. Organizers got some major messaging help in the latest campaign finance reports which showed that CMS Energy has spent more than a quarter-million-dollars in a Republican primary targeting the chair of a House subcommittee who opposes construction of new data centers in Michigan. The number is huge. In 2024, there were a total of 13,491 votes cast in the district’s Republican primary (it's a very red district so the primary is the real election). With a similar turnout this year, the spending equals $20 per vote. In our Digging Deep segment, we document the cascading consequences of the FDA's Biden-era decision to allow abortion pills to be shipped through the mail without an in-person doctor visit. We walk through a documented series of cases — a woman trying to secretly give her ex-boyfriend's girlfriend an abortion pill, a man who pretended to be a woman online to obtain the pills and then told his pregnant girlfriend they were supplements, a doctor who tried to feed the pills to his sleeping mistress, and a DOJ employee accused of baking the pills into cookies for his girlfriend. Her baby died two days later. We make the case that in their zeal to make abortion as easy as possible, the left has created a system that makes it easier to force abortions on women who don't want them — which is a direct contradiction of every argument they've ever made. We also cover a Cornell University student who refused a job interview and then told the employer he wasn't interested in working for a Jew — then doubled down when given a chance to walk it back. A crowdfunding campaign raised over $13,000 to reward him. We note that the Maine Democratic Party just nominated a man with an SS tattoo for Senate, endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and connect the dots on where mainstreaming anti-Semitism leads. For our Bright Spot, a high school junior in Charlotte painted Live Like Kirk and a Bible verse on her school's spirit rock with prior permission — and was then treated like a criminal, forced out of class, and made to surrender her phone logs. The Alliance Defending Freedom took the case. The school board adopted a new speech policy, issued a public statement exonerating the student, and paid $95,000 in damages and fees. The Alliance Defending Freedom wins again. And we close with Jim Freeman, a fourth grade teacher at Tully Elementary in Louisville, who isn't even Ryan Neighbors' teacher — but when he heard that Ryan, who has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, would have to miss the school field trip to the Falls of the Ohio State Park, he bought a specialized backpack and carried her through the park himself. Does anyone know what is in this deal?! Sunday evening, the US and Iran signed (?) an agreement that would supposedly open the Strait of Hormuz and end the US naval blockade. The deal supposedly ends hostilities and opens parties up to negotiate on Iran's nuclear future over the 60-day period. What else is in the deal? No one knows! Will the deal hold up? Probably not! Just days after proclaiming “ I don't think about Americans' financial situations,” Trump gave Democrats another campaign commercial saying that “he loves the inflation” … which has hit a 3-year high. Adding to the out-of-touch aura from the White House, he's reaching out to the average American as only an 80-year-old billionaire can do it: first by attending a basketball game where the cheapest tickets cost thousands, and then by offering a UFC 250 gold coin for $11,999.99. The Michigan sales tax on that trinket: $720. Add to that the $2-million or so it costs taxpayers almost every week for Trump's  weekly golf trip to Florida and you've got enough money to gift 6,000 or so Americans with Trump 250 commemorative coins. As Michigan State University looks once again for a new President, retiring U.S. Senator Gary Peters' name moves to the top of the speculation. This comes as retired Senator Debbie Stabenow and Governor Gretchen Whitmer say they're not interested in the job. All 3 are MSU alumni. CMS Energy is adding to the politics of affordability, asking for still another massive rate increase. The utility wants to raise electric rates by $486-million. This rate hike request comes less than three months after the utility received approval for a $217 million increase. Attorney General Nessel and multiple legislators are pushing back – Nessel fighting the increase through the Public Service Commission, lawmakers proposing measures to limit the frequency of rate increase requests. The battle for control of the closely divided Michigan Legislature is well underway. Democrats need to flip 4 seats to regain control of the state House; Republicans need to turn around 2 seats to win control of the state Senate. We'll get into the details with Kyle Melinn, editor of the insider newsletter MIRS News. Governor Whitmer headlined the ribbon cutting for an important bridge this week … just not THE bridge. While the Miller-Rotunda Bridge in Dearborn (important to the Ford Rouge Plant complex) is now open, the Trump administration continues to delay the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The Trump roadblock for Michigan's economy is supported by state House Speaker Matt Hall, who says Michigan needs to renegotiate toll sharing for the bridge – even though Canada paid the full cost of construction. The New York Times is reporting that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is promoting Haley Stevens' campaign for the U.S. Senate. This comes as Abdul El-Sayed surges in internal polls … all of this two weeks before the first primary election ballots go into the mail. Ballots begin going out to Michigan voters on June 25. Every elective state and federal job will be filled in the November election. While the spotlight will be on the races for Governor and U.S. Senate, there's a lot more at stake, including control of the state Legislature. Gun violence prevention. Potentially the most over leverage political ideal in the history of modern politicking. It remains an omnipresent issue within every discussion, debate, and campaign, and certainly can be relied on for every election and midterm that rolls around. Unfortunately, as that time draws near, we here in Michigan are dealing with this once more as Governor Whitmer signed another executive order, to create another task force, to "address" the "ongoing crisis" of gun violence. There's always so much behind the scene that seems to motivate these moves and while it's hard to predict exactly why it's happening right now, you can anticipate that in the end, we'll likely have to endure more hardships as lawful gun owners here in Michigan. Subscribe to our YouTube channel On our political radar this week… Donald Trump says he's getting bored with his war, doesn't care about the mid-terms … but is laser focused on what matters: his reflecting pond renovation, diverting money from national parks for his D.C. cleanup, the Arc ‘d Trump, taking over DC golf courses, the UFC version of the ancient gladiator battles to the death, and reminding us daily that he's passed a dementia screening test four times. His latest middle finger to the nation: suggesting that the Las Vegas-style Fight Club arena on what used to be the White House lawn become a permanent part of the landscape. Vegas has the Dome and Elvis Wedding chapel; the home of Presidents, if Trump has his way, will have its own dome and a massive wedding reception hall. And it's being reported that Trump is looting money from National Parks maintenance to pay for his July 4 fireworks show, the Reflecting Pool, a White House helipad and DC cleanup projects. He'll burn up 1.6-million dollars blowing up stuff on the 4th … even as he burns up billions every week blowing up stuff in Iran. In an administration populated by the absolutely worst cabinet in American history, Trump manages to lower the bar even further with the appointment of Michigander housing developer and certified Trump suck-up Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, a job for which he has absolutely no qualifications. Actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski … a.k.a. Jason Bourne and Jack Ryan … would be more qualified. Adding the the Bad Cabinet Blues: the new director of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullins, says as far as he's concerned following court orders is optional. Michigan Democrats are optimistic after making the case to the national party that Michigan should be in the first tier of 2028 presidential primaries. The state party has also rejected appeals related to vote counting in the April endorsement convention. Will the dispute extend to the official nominating convention in August? The state House has turned down a Republican-drafted constitutional amendment which would make all university boards and the State Board of Education gubernatorial appointed bodies instead of elected. Speaker Matt Hall didn't bother to talk with Democrats before putting the measure up for a vote. With a two-thirds vote needed to pass, it didn't come close to adoption, but could be revived for the November election. We are just 50 days away from the start of early voting in Michigan. The four races to watch: the 3-way Republican contest for the opportunity to battle Jocelyn Benson for Governor; the 3-way Democratic contest to battle Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate; and multi-candidate Democratic primaries for Congressional seats based in Lansing and Macomb County. Speculation has begun over who may be in the running for President of Michigan State University in the wake of last week's departure of Kevin Guskiewicz. Will it be a relatively unknown academic, or a high-powered retired politician? There's precedent for both routes…although the highest profile possibility, Gretchen Whitmer, has already announced she is not interested in the gig. Republicans in Congress are starting to push back on Trump outrages – the House passing a measure to stop Trump's Middle East war, Senators stripping the one-billion-dollar subsidy for his ballroom from the DHS budget, and both chambers primed to outlaw efforts to revive the $1.8-billion slush fund for rewarding January 6 rioters and other Trump fans. It's interesting that congressional Republicans only started to show signs of life after candidate filing deadlines. Michigan Congressman Tom Barrett, who no longer faces the possibility of a primary challenge, was one of four Republicans voting this week to end the Iran War.  The political threat to non-compliant Republicans for pushing back against Great Leader comes as doubts about Trump's mental and physical health grow. His third physical examination since taking office coupled with an incomplete post-exam report on what the doctors learned, his reduced work schedule, the cankles and bruising – have increased the speculation. It sure looks like both his political and mental powers are in decline. This week's best political giggle: an AI doctored photo of Senate candidate Mike Rogers, turning his relatively fit 63-year-old body into a modern-day Charles Atlas. The Trump administration is backing away from a planned $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund after a revolt from Republicans on Capitol Hill. The fund, tied to a settlement and intended to be administered by the Justice Department, had drawn criticism as a potential slush fund that could benefit Trump allies prosecuted under the Biden administration. White House officials told GOP leaders they were retreating from the proposal, at least for now.What stands out to me is that this was never something Trump could simply do by executive order. It would have had to move through Congress, and right now he is running short on political leverage. Collins, Murkowski, and McConnell have already shown they're willing to break with the administration. Add in senators like Tom Tillis, John Cornyn, and Bill Cassidy, who have their own political considerations, and suddenly there are a lot of Republican votes that need convincing. The lawsuit argues that AI contributes to harms including addiction, suicide, and even mass shootings. What makes this interesting is that there are no clean ideological fault lines on AI. In Florida, AI is increasingly being treated as just another version of Big Tech, grouped together with the companies conservatives believe have censored or de-platformed them. Simultaneously, politicians in states like Michigan are celebrating AI investments, data centers, and the jobs that come with them, even as it might leave Gretchen Whitmer on the outside looking in for 2028. As AI becomes a larger part of the economy, states are going to play a much bigger role in determining how it develops.But our biggest story remains Iran. Over the last few days, a targeted IRGC commander killing, an attack on a U.S. airbase in Kuwait, and reports that Iran is ending ceasefire talks have all pushed events away from diplomacy and toward escalation. Iran is threatening to fully shut down the Strait of Hormuz and other export routes. The president of Iran has reportedly tendered his resignation, while the IRGC appears to be tightening its grip on power. At the same time, Hezbollah has reportedly signaled a willingness to accept a ceasefire with Israel, though neither American nor Israeli officials seem convinced it would hold.Everything now revolves around leverage. The Strait of Hormuz is Iran's last major bargaining chip. If it reopens without major concessions, Tehran loses a significant source of pressure. If Iran gives up its nuclear ambitions or loses the ability to project power through regional proxies, the regime risks undermining the very justification it has used for decades. Meanwhile, global oil markets are hanging on every development. Hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough have helped keep prices contained, but each new escalation raises the possibility that the conflict widens and energy markets absorb the shock.One small but important development is that internet access appears to be returning inside Iran after months of restrictions. That means more information is beginning to flow out of the country at a moment when the political situation appears increasingly unstable. Mary and Andrew begin this week by welcoming former Assistant US Attorney Sunita Doddamani. A 20-year civil servant with an impeccable record of service, Sunita is one of the prosecutors who was recently fired as part of the DOJ's report about the prior administration's so-called “bias” against abortion protesters and religious rights in FACE Act cases. She talks openly about the "Article II" termination letter she received from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, with no warning and like many others, seemingly just for doing her job by taking the cases assigned to her. From there, Andrew and Mary look at the administration's moves to vacate the convictions of four Proud Boys who were convicted of multiple felonies related to the attack on January 6th. Then, on to a significant decision from Judge Mehta in a long-running civil lawsuit brought against Trump, finding that the president's January 6th speech was political rather than official in nature, which would rule out immunity for official acts. And before they wrap up, the co-hosts take up the latest ruling on Judge Boasberg's contempt inquiry into whether government officials violated his court orders around those deportation flights in March of 2025.
