Nach ZACK (ILG PODCAST EP:11) und RAUB ist WISH von der AK.47 CREW der nächste Graffiti-Writer aus Frankfurt, der mit einem Buch kommt: POWER OF LOVE! Eine Reise in die 1990er und 2000er Jahre mit autobiografischen Erzählungen, Interviews mit Kollegen und einer geöffneten Schatztruhe seltener, unveröffentlichter Fotografien. WISH steigt Mitte der Neunziger Jahre als Punk in die Graffiti-Szene ein und stößt wenig später zur AK.47 CREW. Mit seinem Graffiti-Partner RISE gehört er zu einer Generation, die die Stilistik der Frankfurter Graffiti-Szene entscheidend mitgeprägt haben. WISH´s eigenwilliger und freigeistiger Stil sowie seine Attitude könnte man heute als eine Vorstufe des “Anti-Style” bezeichnen, denn er sprühte schon in den ersten Jahren anders als der Rest und bricht schnell mit den damals so wichtigen Proportionen in Buchstaben und der gewohnten Ästhetik des klassischen Stylewritings. Eine spannende Perspektive, die im Buch dokumentiert ist und in dieser Podcast Episode ausführlich besprochen wird. Die beschreibt die Hamburger Affenfaust Galerie vor zwei Jahren noch so: “Moritz Green aka Golden Green lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg. Er ist international für seine unverwechselbare Graffitiästhetik bekannt und ist Mitglied der er europäischen Crew Ultraboyz. Von 2004 bis 2008 studierte Green Grafikdesign. Golden Green verschlüsselt die genretypischen Stilelemente zu einer eigenen Ausdrucksform – ein retro-futuristisches Universum voller surrealer Gestalten, clever konstruierten Buchstaben und flackernde Formen in leuchtenden Pastelfarben. Neben seiner Leidenschaft für's bomben arbeitet er auch in den Bereichen Print, Malerei und Papierschnitt. Die MUNICH GRAFFITI LIBRARY hat im Rahmen von “40 Jahre Graffiti in München” den Graffiti Writer NEON zu einer weiteren Geschichtsstunde in seine alte Heimat eingeladen, moderiert wurde das Gespräch am Abend des 25.02.2023 wieder von unserem Podcast Host René Der Name NEON fällt seit Mitte der Achtziger Jahre immer wieder wenn es um Münchner Stylewriting geht. Jahrzehnte lang in Berlin lebend, war »The Stone Age Kid« mitbeteiligt an einigen heute noch legendären Aktionen. Beispielsweise mit JACK (CES53) aus Holland, mit dem er mehrere Wholetrains und Wholecars in der Hauptstadt gemalt hat. NEON war auch derjenige welcher mit Don M Zaza – eher aus einem Zufall heraus – 1986 die erste Berliner U-Bahn besprüht hat. Und er war der erste Deutsche, der 1988 in New York Subways gemalt hat. Über all diese spannenden kultur-historischen Punkte und seine ersten Jahre in München hat NEON an diesem Abend einen 45minütigen Vortrag mit Begleitmaterial wie Fotos und Videos gehalten, an dem dieses einstündige Gespräch für unsere ILG Podcast Episode 079 anknüpft. Endlich, denn die vier Herausgeber haben sich Zeit gelassen, länger als es ursprünglich geplant war. Das Warten hat sich aber richtig gelohnt! Die vier Herausgeber sind selbst seit mehr als 30 Jahren in der Graffiti-Szene beheimatet und schaffen so einen authentischen Blick auf die Anfänge unserer Kultur, aus der sich mittlerweile eine weltumspannende Kunstform entwickelt hat. In über fünf Jahren Recherchezeit wurden größtenteils noch unveröffentlichte Fotos, Skizzen, Materialien und Zitate von damals aktiven Graffiti-Writern und deren angrenzenden Wirkungsfeldern sowie zahlreichen weiteren Archiven zusammengetragen. You're eating bugs, trying to stay alive, trying to escape, trying to get to the water where we got on a boat. And we floated with a bunch of other people, really not knowing where you're floating. And there's no food because we can't carry any food hardly with us. So you've got people that are dying around you and they're sick, right? And there's not much, you have to make some hard decisions.So I've lived through an overdose emergency before, and I saw these posts and I heard these two guys that I kind of knew of who used to hang around there, had both died off the same batch. And I got this feeling like in my stomach and in my feet, like this really deep sense of deja VU. You know, it's like in The Matrix where the black cat walks past you and you know the program's glitching and I'm like, this is going to happen again. This is happening again. There's an overdose crisis. This whole thing is going to happen again. And then I thought I can't sit out.I would say that I was running around for a full 10 minutes and it felt like 12 hours. It was scary because I didn't know what they were going to do. If they were going to like grab me and call the cops or they were going to beat me up. And I see this fence leading to freedom and I climbed over it, and then there was another Fence! That was like 15 feet high, about five feet behind it that I just didn't even know was there. And I was like "shit"!

Todays ep is with my cuz from sydney, Jurnan Amy Ayerest AKA Thorn, MC and graffiti artist. She grew up in Sydneys inner city and became involved in Graffiti and hip hop culture in her youth. She discusses her upbringing and being apart of a graffiti crew. Which led to her living on the streets and being in and out of juvie. Also experiencing domestic violence and being housed in adult mens detention at only 15. She now owns a production company, last minute productions, and has travelled the world as an MC, and a graffiti artist. We speak about, but not too much detail about the legendary beefs there were and what inspired him to grab a can of paint. If you know anything about NYC graffiti culture, then you already know about the rivalries. Some of them have been ongoing for close to three decades now. From the late 80's to the late 90's, retiring in 2000... you most likely have seen "JD BTW" thrown up all over New York City alongside JA, SET and a bunch of other graff legends. JD definitely made a mark in the city during his decade long run throwing his name up alongside highways, billboards, trains, trucks and wherever else he can get to. He invited me to his house in Forest Hills to talk about graffiti amongst a bunch of other things. His love of traveling and flying drones. Definitely a cool experience.
