“DREW” LAT * OTR * RTDK * LOD * XMEN * APCAfter joining The World Famous LA BREAKERS in 1983 as one of LA's poppin' phenoms, DREW went on to co-found one of LA's original graffiti crews called "LA'S TOP” in 1984 alongside his writing partner, REED.That same year, he quite possibly became the first writer to ever hit a rooftop in Los Angeles and the first to bomb two billboards in the city's graffiti history. But, life took a turn. After losing his best friend to the streets at just 17, DREW fell into Gang Life—leading to crime, addiction and a long stretch in State Prison.Even behind bars, Graffiti remained in his soul becoming the first person to ever rock an illegal blockbuster with a spray can inside a California state prison. When he came home, he returned to his true love: graffiti art. DREW became a pioneer in the slap sticker game collaborating with some of the most influential graffiti artists worldwide and building his brand, ONLY THE REAL, into one of LA's most recognizable graff merch brands. Today, DREW dedicates himself with helping and rebuilding lives. He works as a counselor and caseworker to help others fight addiction and find their way back. From gang banger to peace maker—DREW has blessed the Classic Burners stage with one of the dopest redemption stories in graffiti history!

#258: Los Angeles is spending nearly $4 million to clean up and fence off the Oceanwide Towers after the three abandoned buildings were covered with graffiti. Some people are glad to see the graffiti go, but others say they like what the murals represent, arguing that their removal is a bad use of tax dollars. Meanwhile, LAist reporting shows the company who owns the Oceanwide towers has been linked to bribery and money laundering investigations. With all this drama on our mind, we wanted to talk with someone with deep knowledge of LA's graffiti writing scene. We meet up with Red Ortiz, a graffiti writer turned barber and film director. He'll tell us how painting illegal murals changed his life, and why he thinks graffiti is so important to LA's culture. Ever feel like you're putting in the hours practicing, but not making the progress you feel you should be? I've definitely experienced this a lot over my life. The reason is most likely not a lack of commitment, but it lies in the way you're practicing. I first came across the concept of “deliberate practice” from a book called 'The Talent Code'. Deliberate practice is a more purposeful approach to developing skills using focused, repetitive practice rather than simply putting in the hours. With deliberate practice, you're hyper-focused on what you're doing, you have a specific goal in mind, and you're out of your comfort zone. With this level of intentionality, it helps your brain wire and strengthen transmitters faster than something like practicing casually while watching TV. I can remember back when I was trying to get better at graffiti letters in the early '90s. I spent a couple of years fiddling around with different things, but in 1993, I was given some letters by one of my mentors, Eklipse, and told to practice those letters exactly. Without knowing it, I was in a deep state of deliberate practice. I would draw those letters over and over, hyper-focused on every detail, trying to get it all right. I made more progress in two months than I had in the previous two years. This can be applied to any skill you want to get better at. Definitely something I find harder and harder to do in this era of distraction we are currently in. - Find Bus on various platforms linked here: https://bus.graffitimachine.com/

In Rocco's case, art was the catalyst helping him heal from childhood trauma, getting him sober (35+ years and counting), propelling him into college and into his successful professional career. During our freewheeling conversation we discuss how "unplanned moments" highlight Rocco's path through both dark times and light, including a chance encounter with Jane Golden, an American muralist and art educator, who became a significant influence in Rocco's life. The graffiti piece on Camden Lock Railway Bridge is considered to be the oldest surviving pieces of street art in Camden, having been created by John Bulley in 1989. Whilst working on a number of new shop signs in the area, Bulley was asked if he could come up with an idea for the Camden Lock Railway Bridge as it was about to be refurbished and repainted by British Rail. Knowing that he wanted the design to be visible from a distance and have some humour in it, Bulley used a bold typeface and photographed two men he was working with to include in his design. The resulting work features the two men who appear to be constantly painting the bridge.  The work has been repainted in recent years to freshen up the paint but using the same iconic design. Having lasted for over thirty years, the piece is considered an icon of London's oldest pieces of street art.

Welcome to Greensburg, IN, know for a tree which grows from the top of the courthouse tower, giving the town its nickname, "Tree City". There have been trees growing continually since the first tree was noticed in the 1870s. The town was laid out in 1822 and the post office was opened in 1823. Greensburg had the unfortunate distinction of being a "sundown town" for decades after race riots against African Americans in 1906 and 1907. Sundown towns did not allow people of color within the town limits after sundown, and was a common practice in many states at least through the early 1960s. Greensburg has several notable residents including Gilbert Van Camp, founder of G. C. Van Camp & Son, and Carl Fisher, entrepreneur involved in the development of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Miami Beach. We hope you enjoy your time in Greensburg!

Warum mit einem Galeristen sprechen? Ganz einfach, weil es mittlerweile sehr viele Graffiti Writer gibt, die mit ihren Arbeiten bereits ausstellen oder es irgendwann vorhaben. Doch was zeigt man in einer Ausstellung? Mohammed Ali is an award winning artist, curator and creative producer. He is regarded as a pioneer in the Islamic street-art movement, fusing street art with Islamic script and patterns. He has been awarded an MBE for services to Art. Mohammed began as a graffiti artist, painting Islamic inspired street art. He has since evolved his work towards combining street art with live performances, installations, digital projections and moving soundscapes. He has created truly immersive experiences for audiences throughout the world, from street canvases in New York,  Amsterdam, London and Melbourne, to intimate performances in the Vatican. His work serves as a bridge, bringing together communities divided by culture, faith and ethnicity. In 2008, Mohammed founded ‘Soul City Arts’, a global arts movement bringing together artists, activists and communities with the goal of transforming society. In 2013, Mohammed was invited to the Vatican to present at a TedX entitled “Religious Freedom Today” where he painted a street art mural live on stage. On the show today, we discuss his journey as a graffiti artist and becoming a role model to future Islam-inspired artists, the state of the Islamic arts scene today and learning from past experiences, the future of the Islamic Arts and the inspiration behind his Vatican performance. We had an insightful conversation with the pioneer, exploring an area which does not get much media coverage and learning more about the Islamic Arts space. Philanthropist and previous Detroit Tiger Attorney Amy Peterson sits down with Mother Honestly COO Nicole Bopp and discusses the conception of her passion project Rebel Nell.  Landing a job in the MLB Amy became a Detroit resident through some of Detroit's darkest times of bankruptcy.  During those early days Amy got to know many of the homeless men and women in the city through  her daily walks with her dog and recognized the needs of its residents.  Wanting to give back to the city that took a chance on her when every other MLB team rejected her, Amy took the fallen graffiti from the walls of Detroit. She coupled this with her passion for women and created a brand that gives back in more ways than one. Learn more about Amy Peterson, her organization Rebel Nell and Non-Profit TEA at rebelnell.com

I don’t know, because I ain’t in it.” “I just don’t know. I’m not gonna say it didn’t happen, I’m not gonna say it did happen. I’m not sure… I know there’s God. What does a creative journey that starts with graffiti art then moves to video game work and then ends up on a smaller scale working with acrylics look like? What lessons and tips can other artists learn from such a journey? My guest, Greg Simkins opens up about all these various transitions in his life and how he has been able to build a thriving art business with his wife. Greg’s story is fascinating and unique and I hope you can catch the lively and infectious passion that he exudes for his work. Don’t forget to catch some images of Greg’s artwork located at the end of this post! Encouragement Along the way How did you get started as an artist? Was it a gradual progression? Did you know from a young age? Or did you come to the realization later in life? Who helped you along your creative journey? Did you have mentors, friends, or family members who encouraged you along the way? My guest, Greg Simkins describes the wonderfully supportive relationship he shares with his father who was vital in encouraging and nurturing his creative impulses early in his journey. What can you learn from Greg’s story? Does the impact that other people have had on your journey as an artist inspire you to do the same for others? Graffiti Art How does a mild mannered and shy AP student find himself involved with the skating and punk rock crowd? How does this association and engagement translate to a career as a successful and respected artist? My guest Greg Simkins shares the story of how some students in high school noticed his drawings and introduced him to the world of graffiti art. From there, the encouragement of his friends and his father led to greater confidence in his artistic abilities. Greg’s story is an interesting and non-traditional one that will leave you intrigued and curious to how many other paths exist out there for artists to find their way. Working With Acrylics Do you remember the first piece you completed in a new medium? Can you remember what you learned through that process? Was it frustrating or rewarding? My guest, Greg Simkins described to me his first experience completing a piece of art using acrylics. This experience also happened to be Greg’s first foray into being commissioned for his artwork. Greg recalls the experience as being difficult and not absent of errors he had to correct along the way but ultimately, this encounter led Greg on a path to begin working with acrylics more and more. Now Greg works predominately with acrylics and looks back fondly on this moment as one of the first steps of his journey. Struggling With Time Management What do you do to structure your time as an artist? Do you try to spend some time each day in your creative flow or do you designate whole days that you can dedicate to projects? Artist Greg Simkins explained to me his struggles with navigating the complexities of raising a family and balancing his time in the studio working on his projects. At the end of the day, Greg had to get to a place where he could really learn to slow down and structure his time. He had taken his time for creative endeavors for granted when he had his father close by to assist him, but when his father moved away he found himself in a state of chaos. What lessons can you learn from Greg’s story? How will you ensure that you have time to complete the work you are passionate about? Outline of This Episode [1:35] I introduce my guest, Greg Simkins. Many cities are starting to recognise that street art has both a cultural and economic value. SalTheColourGeek/Flickr, CC BY-SAIs graffiti art or crime? The modern form of graffiti made its way to Australia from the US in the 1980s, and it quickly was characterised as a blight on our urban landscapes. Classified as vandalism, many cities adopted tough legal measures to deter graffiti artists from tagging walls and trains. Today, the situation largely remains the same. Graffiti is still illegal. The city of Hobart recently “declared a war” on graffiti, as have many other cities and councils. Even US film director David Lynch is reported to have said that graffiti “has pretty much ruined the world” at a recent speech at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. But at the same time, cities have also begun to value and promote street art - effectively a legal form of graffiti. Street art is now recognised as having both cultural and economic value, and many graffiti artists have transitioned to take advantage of this legal recognition of their practice. Dallas Rogers speaks with Cameron McAuliffe about the relationship between graffiti and street art, and the value of these art forms to the urban environment and the economies of our cities. Some people see graffiti as vandalism, a crime or a sign of urban decay. Others see graffiti as art, self-expression and a testament of neighborhood pride.  On This Week’s Fordham Conversations we examine the topic of graffiti art. First we examine graffiti and the law with Leila Amineddoleh, Counsel to Lombard & Geliebter.  Then we discuss the evolution and impact of graffiti art with David Storey, an artist, Fordham University professor and Visual arts Program co-director at Rose Hill, along with Patrick Verel, whose research paper,  “New York City Graffiti Murals: Signs of Hope, marks of Distinction,” examines the usefulness of graffiti.

Like the sketches and murals that clutter his brain and blaze through his fingertips, David Choe confounds predictability. The South Bay graffiti artist is celebrated for startling visual intensity crossed with streetwise vision. He paints fast and furious -- using aerosol, acrylic and watercolors -- able to nimbly capture the slightest emotional serration. His works bridge two worlds and mindsets -- the street and the gallery.
