The Shining (1980) a Halloween RetrospectiveThe Shining is 37 years old and is an absolute classic. But it wasn't always regarded as such. When it was released in 1980 it was met with mixed reviews and was not a financial success in the least. However, Father Time has been good to this Stanley Kubrick film. It's on many "best horror" lists including that of AFI's. John Mills, Shawn Eastridge, and Tristan Riddell meet up on this Filibuster to discuss this movie right in time for Halloween. Shawn and Tristan regard it as the masterpiece many believe it to be but John definitely has a differing opinion. What do you guys think of The Shining?

What Made Voyager a Family. In the beginning, stranded in the middle of uncharted space was a divided crew against a slew of enemy aliens. It's a miracle Voyager got home at all, much less in seven years. But Voyager was the little ship that could, and one of the biggest reasons why was due to its crew. The transition of uniting Starfleet and Maquis crews into one had its initial hiccups (Seska and Jonas, anyone?), but eventually the people running Voyager became more than just a crew. They became a family. In this last episode of To The Journey hosted by Charlynn Schmiedt and Tristan Riddell, they discuss everything that made Voyager a family. They parallel how real-life circumstances might have united the actors that portrayed the crew, how a family atmosphere was portrayed on the show (or in some cases, maybe not enough), and how that cemented the show's place as a unique entity in the Star Trek universe. To all of our Trek family, we thank you for joining us for our four glorious years of talking Voyager. "Author, Author" Commentary. Just about any episode centered around The Doctor is likely to be entertaining. What's better than that? Well, what about an episode that's as entertaining as it is thought-provoking? Cue Voyager's "Author, Author," which aired in the last third of the seventh season. Motivated by the knowledge that EMH Mark I holograms like himself have been relegated to menial jobs, The Doctor has written "Photons Be Free," a holonovel that is loosely based on his experience aboard Voyager. But when the crew sees thinly-veiled exaggerations of themselves being portrayed in the program, they're not exactly happy. Join Tristan and Char in this episode of To The Journey as they break out the quills, the smoking jackets and the Netflix as they comment on the shenanigans that ensue as The Doctor fights for his intellectual property rights. "Fury" in the Mirror Universe. In the previous episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan set the stage for the next installment of the mirror universe series, so why not keep going? It's time for Kes' revenge! Three years have passed between the story written in the last TTJ and this one, which means some serious shenanigans have gone down aboard the ISS Intrepid. With the balance of power always in flux in the mirror universe, who's controlling what — and whom? And meanwhile, what has Kes been doing since she fled the Intrepid? She returns, just as she promised to Tuvok and B'Elanna, but what tricks does she have up her sleeve? Tune in and find out how Char and Tristan wrap up their Voyager mirror universe. That's right, this is the last episode that will feature the mirror universe because Char and Tristan have an important announcement: They will end their four-year tenure on To The Journey with episode 190, set for release on Nov. 10. Voyager Mirror Universe, Part 5. In the same way that little kids will repeat an action if it makes an adult laugh, Char and Tristan are here to give the listeners what they want. And what they want is more adventures aboard the ISS Intrepid, better known as the Voyager mirror universe. Char and Tristan started creating their interpretation of the mirror Voyager crew in the Delta Quadrant back in TTJ 114, and in this fifth installment written on-the-fly, the story's focus centers on Kes and Neelix. They have both been indentured servants in exchange for being rescued by the Kazon shortly after the Intrepid found itself in the Delta Quadrant. After three years of serving the crew, Neelix thinks it's time he and Kes moved on, but Janeway doesn't think they have repaid their debt in full. What now? Origin of the Borg. Ask a Star Trek fan about the how the Borg collective got started, and you might hear a few different theories. One is that the collective was started after V'ger joined with Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Others point to stories in Star Trek literature that reveal the Borg Queen's rise to power over countless millions. But the truth is, nothing in canon states how the Borg came to be. Therefore, as promised at the end of the last show, Char and Tristan put their collective heads together and come up with their own version of how the Borg originated in this episode of To The Journey. Voyager as an Animated Series. Star Trek's animated series is an often overlooked edition in the show's extensive catalogue. Yes, it was short-lived and yes, it wasn't always good, but it also made the most of telling Star Trek stories in an animated format — especially on a ridiculously low budget. But when we say that The Animated Series has an important place in Trek lore, don't take our word for it; instead, tune into Trek.fm's Saturday Morning Trek, which explores all facets of Star Trek in the 1970s. In this episode of To the Journey, Char and Tristan ponder an animated version of Voyager. How would it be developed and distributed if it were being produced today? What sort of stories would it tell? How would animation lend itself to new things that couldn't have been done on the live action series? They think through these questions and more, so tune in and let us know what you think of the idea of an animated Voyager series. This week's show art by Gary Anderson. The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan's redefinition of comic book movies did not stop with Batman Begins, so when the studio asked him to continue the series, he, David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan began mining Batman comics such as The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke for inspiration and continue to elevate the genre. In this 100th episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing welcomes John Mills and Tristan Riddell to talk about The Dark Knight. "Resolutions" Commentary. Sometimes when things in life get tough, you've got to indulge in a little bit of comfort. For Char and Tristan, that comfort is a heaping serving of Janeway and Chakotay goodness. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan indulge in "Resolutions," the episode that drove the J/C shippers wild 20 years ago...and still does. It's got the implausible romance setup of a man and a woman alone together on a planet, a bathtub, headboards, ancient legends, and of course, a primate. All the makings of a perfect love story for two people coming from vastly different backgrounds, but slowly coming together...until Tuvok and the Voyager crew come racing back to New Earth and rip them away from all that could have been. Le sigh. Hosts Tristan Riddell and Charlynn Schmiedt Editor Tristan Riddell Producer Charlynn Schmiedt Executive Producers Charlynn Schmiedt, Norman C. Lao, Matthew Rushing, and C. Create a New Character. With all the untapped potential Voyager had, it's not much of a surprise that "what if" speculations are a regular component of To The Journey. And guess what — this week is yet another scenario where Char and Tristan let their imaginations do the talking. This week, they add a member to the crew, describe his or her role on the ship, and explain how this character integrates with the other regulars. And before you ask, no, this isn't a "replace Seven of Nine with another character" discussion; in fact, that was already done on TTJ 135! This character is someone new who isn't replacing anybody. But wait — aren't there plenty of people already in this large ensemble cast? Yes. Is there really a void another character could fill? Absolutely, yes. Listen and find out how Char and Tristan made their scenarios work. Career Paths in the Future. You're 18 years old and a fresh graduate of Zefram Cochrane High School. The whole galaxy is your oyster. What do you do with your life? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about the sort of life they would lead if money wasn't a factor in the workforce. While it's unfortunate that most of us don't have such a luxury in the 21st century, people in the 24th century do; in fact, one of Star Trek's biggest messages of hope is that some of our greatest problems (often connected to money) will be gone in the future. With basic life needs met and a social mentality of bettering humanity, what sort of things do Char and Tristan think they would do if they lived in the 24th century? Would factors such as education affect their attainment goals? Would their callings be the same? Listen on, find out, and ponder your own ideal self in the future. Rewrite of "The Disease." Love hurts, and no one on Voyager knows that better than Harry Kim. He left behind his fiancee back on Earth and he's been down on his luck since, having unsuccessfully fallen for a hologram, an ex-Borg, and the wrong Delaney sister. When he falls madly in love Derran Tal in "The Disease," it's really not a surprise that something went wrong. Not only must Harry answer to an angry Mama Bear Janeway when she finds out Harry didn't file his "I wanna make love with an alien" paperwork, but he also gets a raging case of space herpes. Poor Harry doesn't ever catch a break. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the elements of "The Disease" they did like and transform the rest into their own episode rewrites. Does Harry still glow when they're finished with him? Listen and find out. A Chakotay/B'Elanna Prequel. Before finding peace at Janeway's side aboard Voyager, Chakotay was a self-described "angry warrior." A former Starfleet officer, he joined the Maquis to fight for his home planet against the Cardassians, and we unfortunately know little else. A recent listener email suggested that Char and Tristan write a pre-"Caretaker" story about the "angry warrior," so in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do just that. They write an episode on the spot that starts with Chakotay telling a story to the senior staff during Ancestor's Eve, which takes us all back to Chakotay and B'Elanna's Maquis days. The story reveals several things, such as how Chakotay recruited B'Elanna into becoming his chief engineer about the Val Jean, but also a detail about Chakotay's life that few know. It shocked Janeway and it might shock you, so tune in and find out what it is. Fan Reactions to Non-Traditional Casting and WhitewashingMatt Hansen and Tristan Riddell touch on a very important yet sensitive issue this week. We've all seen how fans react when production companies change what some view as important qualities of a beloved character. Some show excitement, others with indifference, or some with pure hate and vile racism. We've seen Non-Traditional Casting more and more recently with comic book movies. Deadshot, Perry White, Heimdall, and now (possibly) Mary Jane Watson. Sadly, we've also have been seeing Whitewashing with movies like Exodus, Ghost in the Shell, and countless others. This week they ask what does it matter to the characters and why do fans react the way that they do. They also direct these questions inward and discuss how they would react to Non-Traditional Casting with the characters who are most important to them personally. What do you think of Non-Traditional Casting and Whitewashing in films and TV?

"Bride of Chaotica! Commentary. One of the most incredible parts of the convention experience is the cosplay, whether putting a costume together yourself or simply admiring the craftiness of others. With Star Trek Las Vegas still on their brains, Char and Tristan thought it was finally time they tackled a commentary of "Bride of Chaotica!" That way, they could talk about some of the incredible cosplay they saw at STLV that was inspired by this episode, and discuss which character(s) from Captain Proton they'd choose if they were dressing up. And, in the midst of Captain Janeway burying herself in the part of Queen Arachnia, Char and Tristan could justify talking incessantly about Kate Mulgrew's prowess — not that they need a reason for that, but a convenient segue doesn't hurt. So queue up this Voyager fan favorite and listen as Char and Tristan talk about why they appreciate this episode so much. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Super BridgeMates STLV. Star Trek. 50th Anniversary. Las Vegas. A once-in-a-lifetime gathering. Phillip, Daniel, and Darren share their experiences of meeting each other for the first time -- in real life! -- and what it was like to celebrate Trek's 50th Birthday with several thousand fellow fans at the Rio Hotel/Casino/Convention Center, off the Las Vegas Strip. The trio talks about meeting other trek.fm cohosts, Earl Grey listeners, celebrities, and even R2-D2. They describe how their hotel suite served as a "Ten Forward" (their room number was literally 17001) for the week, hosting a meetup for all Trek.fm hosts and listeners, as well as providing the ultimate gaming experience with "Star Trek: Scene-It?" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation Interactive VCR Board Game: A Klingon Challenge." Las Vegas is the ultimate place to experience Biij ... and Darren even gets the official endorsement from not-Gowron himself. Their STLV experience also includes attending TNG-themed celebrity panels - Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan), in her first Star Trek convention appearance, as well as Jonathan Frakes (Willam T. Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi, a previous Earl Grey special guest star!), and Michael Dorn (Worf). The Earl Grey team took up many photo opportunities dressed in their Next Gen uniforms, Daniel met Q, and Darren was excited to find a copy of a certain TNG novel, "Ship of the Line." The highlight of the Earl Grey STLV experience is, of course, Super BridgeMates - recorded live at the #Roddenberry Stage at Quark's Bar. Phillip hosted the three teams of Free Enterprise (Daniel and Darren), Team Lizard Babies (Charlynn Schmiedt and Tristan Riddell) and the Council of Mistresses (Andi Vanderkolk and Jarrah Hodge). Listeners get to experience what happens when three teams must answer random Trek trivia questions, guess episodes/movies as they are acted out by audience members, and stumble around with cosplayers. Phillip does warn listeners that there was a hiccup on his part that may leave the answer of who won this epic showdown entirely up to the listeners' decisions. Earl Grey thanks everyone who made this fun-filled panel possible. Join Earl Grey as they drink a James Tea Kirk from the Rio Masquarade Bar, drop a few coins in the penny slot machines, and sing their hearts out at Klingon Karaoke, as they share their experience at Star Trek Las Vegas. ---- Phillip, Darren, and Daniel wish to announce that this is their penultimate episode of Earl Grey - this bridge crew has decided now is the time to move on to another continuing mission. The next episode of Earl Grey will be their last episode - listeners are encouraged to share their favorite EG moments with the crew before the trio sits down for their last poker game. Earl Grey will soon continue with a new crew and new adventures, celebrating all things Star Trek: The Next Generation. ----- CHAPTERS Star Trek Las Vegas (00:00:41) Super Bridgemates (00:41:03) Closing (01:07:42) HOSTS Daniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren Moser PRODUCTION Darren Moser (Editor and Producer) C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer) Norman C. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Enduring Popularity of TNG. Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered on television in 1987 - almost 30 years later, the second live incarnation of Star Trek on television remains a vital part of the franchise and an enduring pop culture icon. Phillip, Daniel, and Darren have taken apart TNG for over three years on this podcast - discussing characters, story lines, technical aspects, themes, and everything else in between. This has led to one great question: What is behind the enduring popularity of Next Gen? Earl Grey conducts a roundtable discussion that focuses on how TNG remains relevant, what characters and storylines fit in with today's world, and how new fans are "re-discovering" a thirty-year-old television show. They examine the reputation of Next Gen compared to the other Trek series, what the stereotypes are, and what the "popular opinion" is of Captain Picard and the crew of the 24th Century starship Enterprise. Join Earl Grey as they compress their 3 years worth of discussions into one retrospective episode about the enduring popularity of Star Trek: The Next Generation.  A SPECIAL TREK.FM EARL GREY EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR STAR TREK LAS VEGAS Listeners know #BridgeMates from Earl Grey episodes 82 (“When in Doubt Choose Data”), 109 (“He Hasn't Watched That One”), and 141 (“The Council of Mistresses”), as well as To the Journey 117 (“BridgeMates Rematch”) and Standard Orbit 102 (“Trying to Kill Zoolander”). Timescape Commentary. Time is a funny thing - especially when you draw an emoticon on a temporally-frozen warp core breach. Captain Jean Luc Picard reminds Data in a deleted scene in Star Trek: Nemesis that the presence of time is a chance for humans to perform certain rituals. In keeping with that tradition, Darren, Daniel, and Phillip celebrate their 150th episode of talking all things The Next Generation by providing a commentary to their favorite series' 150th episode. In this season six, 25th episode - Timescape - the crew of the Enterprise-D find themselves more-or-less frozen in time while aiding a damaged Romulan warbird. Picard, Data, Troi, and Geordi, after perfecting some comedic impersonation skills, must find a way to fix this unique time travel puzzle, all while encountering a new alien species. Join the crew of Earl Grey as they beam aboard a high-definition Starfleet runabout, explore the interiors of a Romulan warbird, and find they have problems with the fast forward/reverse button on their time controllers in this commentary episode of "Timescape."      A SPECIAL TREK.FM EARL GREY EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR STAR TREK LAS VEGAS Listeners know #BridgeMates from Earl Grey episodes 82 (“When in Doubt Choose Data”), 109 (“He Hasn't Watched That One”), and 141 (“The Council of Mistresses”), as well as To the Journey 117 (“BridgeMates Rematch”) and Standard Orbit 102 (“Trying to Kill Zoolander”). Working in the Writer's Room. From the very beginning Voyager was loaded with potential, which was sadly not used to the fullest extent onscreen. On the bright side, it left fans like Char and Tristan a plethora of untapped possibilities to explore. In fact, episode rewrites and original stories that resolve loose threads have become To the Journey staples! In this episode, Char and Tristan transport themselves to the writer's room at Paramount Studios in 1996, when Jeri Taylor was in charge of Voyager. As wunderkinds who managed to finagle their way into the writer's room, Char and Tristan have some influence in guiding the direction of the show during the third season. What sort of things do they pitch to the staff, who is likeliest to shoot them down, and just how much do they suck up to Jeri Taylor? Tune in and find out. Writing TNG's "The Game" into Voyager. Addiction is a powerful and potentially destructive thing. We saw just how quickly the cycle can start (and spread) in The Next Generation's "The Game," where a seemingly innocent game from Risa turned into a mind control ploy as a way of taking over the Enterprise. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the story from "The Game" and rewrite it into the Voyager paradigm. Without a Starfleet Academy cadet and a young Ashley Judd aboard, who will save the ship? Tune in and find out. Bryan Fuller. When the news broke that Bryan Fuller was named the showrunner for the new Star Trek series set to debut in 2017, fan reaction was highly positive. Not only do Trek fans know of Fuller as someone who broke into Hollywood with a spec script for Deep Space Nine, but he wrote several episodes of Voyager and worked his way up to becoming a co-producer by the seventh season. Since then, Fuller has only continued to build a positive reputation as a producer with shows such as Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss Fuller's contribution to Voyager as a writer and how those episodes might provide hints as to what we can expect from Fuller as the showrunner of the newest Trek series. "Endgame" Commentary. After 172 episodes over the course of seven years, Voyager finished its journey and made it home. For To The Journey, it's been three and a half years and also 172 episodes. To commemorate this milestone, Char and Tristan deemed an "Endgame" commentary as an appropriate celebration. They start out drinking tea, but promptly switch to coffee when they realize how wrong it was that they were drinking tea in the first place (that's Earl Grey's territory). Char and Tristan consider many topics during this commentary, such as the awesome prospect of how certain Voyager characters could make it on the new series set to debut in 2017. Just who do they believe really should have died in "Endgame?" Also, they discuss how the cast and crew felt as the show they worked on for seven years came to a close. Episodes that Exceeded Their Potential. Have you ever cringed at those one-sentence episode summaries on Memory Alpha or Netflix? You are not alone. Sometimes they break down the plot so simplistically that the summary makes the episode sound boring, cliche, or downright bad. Sometimes they barely describe the plot at all. The lesson to be learned here is that one should not judge an episode based on these descriptions. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take that lesson to heart and list their top five episodes that exceed their potential. On paper, the plots of these episodes might not sound enticing, but they shined on screen. Some that made the list are fan favorites. Others are highly overlooked. All of them excelled as episodes of Voyager. Hosts Tristan Riddell and Charlynn Schmiedt Editor Tristan Riddell Producer Charlynn Schmiedt Executive Producers Charlynn Schmiedt, Norman C. Voyager Mirror Universe Story. Gather around everyone, it is time for another round of Voyager story time. In this episode of To the Journey, Char and Tristan return to the Voyager Mirror Universe they created. It is a crazy world where Ensign Kim feels entitled to power as a descendant of Empress Sato, and Captain Janeway shamelessly plays with the emotions of her first officer in the name of reaching the Alpha Quadrant just a second sooner. Interview with Garrett Wang. When Voyager first began, Ensign Harry Kim was a fresh Starfleet Academy graduate with a promising future. Young and gullible, he was often labeled the "green ensign" by fans. The actor behind the character, Garrett Wang, was also young when he landed the role in his mid-twenties. Beyond that similarity, however, Harry Kim is a far cry from the man who played him. Wang's seemingly endless supply of enthusiasm is something fans often note when they meet him at conventions. He speaks honestly about his experience working on Voyager, giving equal footing to positive and negative aspects of it during panels. He does the same in this episode of To The Journey, where for the first time in TTJ history Char and Tristan talk with a main Voyager cast member. They discuss the untapped comedic talent Voyager had among its cast, Wang's Voyager movie pitch, reprising the role of Harry Kim for Star Trek Online, and much more. Episode Comparison. It has been awhile since Char and Tristan have compared an episode of Voyager to another episode of a Trek series. In this episode of To The Journey, they are doing it in full force. Not only do they compare plot points of Voyager's "Coda" to The Next Generation's "Cause and Effect," but they throw TNG's "The Next Phase" into the mix as well. It is a three-for-two bargain that examines the intricacies of recurring time loops and discusses what officers should do if others mistake them for dead. We hope this will prevent listeners from entering distortions in the space-time continuum, blowing up their ships every day for 80 years and being none the wiser. Voyager's Impact and Legacy. As The Next Generation ended its TV run and set sail for the silver screen in 1994, The Powers That Be™ Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor announced that a new incarnation of the Star Trek franchise would debut early in the following year. The show would take place in uncharted space and feature a starship NOT named Enterprise. And, most notably, the ship would be captained by a woman. Now, more than 20 years after the show's debut, opinions about Voyager's place in the Star Trek legacy remain mixed, just as they were when the show aired. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan examine aspects of where Voyager thrived and failed as a Star Trek series, why these things happened the way they did, and how these examples might serve as lessons for the team developing the next series set to debut in 2017. Top five Janeway/Seven Moments. One of the most complicated relationships on Voyager was the constant struggle between Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine. Janeway, always in need of a reform project, almost bit off more than she could chew with the former Borg drone who struggled with her separation from the collective and forming an individual identity. The process put the two constantly at odds and was a heavy point of focus in the last half of Voyager's run. Rewriting DS9's "Fascination" into Voyager. Tristan and Char have been on a creative streak lately. Two episodes ago, they conducted a session in the writer's room and improvised an episode live during the recording. Then, they explored what Voyager might look like in the JJ-verse. For this episode, they are still feeling the creative vibes, so Char and Tristan are back in the writer's room for a rewrite of Deep Space Nine's "Fascination." In this Season Three episode, a Bajoran holiday ritual mixes with telepathy and the crew starts forming unlikely infatuations with one another. Since Voyager never got its version of this "Naked Now"/"Naked Time"-esque storytelling, Char and Tristan take the premise from "Fascination" and rework it into Voyager. Who pursues whom and do they make out? You will have to listen to the episode and find out. Voyager in the JJ-Verse. Star Trek loves playing with timelines. We have seen every incarnation of the franchise play with possibilities outside of what we consider "our" timeline, from Edith Keeler in the 1930s to Captain Janeway on in the 29th century. Aside from the "prime" universe and the Mirror Universe, we now have the Abramsverse. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan envision what Voyager and her crew would be like in the timeline created in the JJ Abrams-produced films. They discuss the likelihood of a Vulcan on the ship, a CGI alien as a regular cast member, the aesthetics of key areas of the ship, and much more. And yes, lens flares are still a thing in the 24th century. Season Six Essential Voyager. Popular opinion among Voyager fans states that the show hit its peak in seasons four and five. If that is true, then where do the last two seasons stand in comparison to Voyager's heyday? In an effort to answer that question in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan return to their Essential Voyager series. They examine each episode for its importance to the characters, Voyager's journey home, the series as a whole, and condense the season down to mandatory viewing. Listen and find out if Season Six measures up to totals from previous seasons, or if it falls short of expectations...much like a malfunctioning holographic boyfriend. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In 1997 a new book was released in Britain about a young boy who finds out that he is a wizard and his life changes forever. Like Harry, the literature world was turned upside down as people fell in love with the story, characters and world that J.K. Rowling created which in turn became a film in 2001. In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Andrea Coffman and Tristan Riddell to talk about Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. "Worst Case Scenario" Commentary.  If you could go back to the start of Voyager's mission and join the crew, would you sign on as a Starfleet officer or a member of the Maquis? Would you lead in a mutiny or fight back? The crew played around with this idea when they uncovered a holonovel Tuvok created at the start of Voyager's journey home as a way of preparing for such a scenario. Now, three years later, the holonovel is less of a preparation for a real situation and more of an entertaining story for the crew. Naturally, in the midst of all the fun, the crew hits some bumps along the way thanks to Seska, the Bajoran-turned-Cardassian spy who defected to the Kazon. In this episode of To The Journey, Tristan Riddell and guest host Phillip Gilfus from Earl Grey dress into their Maquis garb and deliver a commentary on "Worst Case Scenario." Coda. Jeri Taylor wrote the book on Janeway. Literally. Two of them in fact! So it was no surprise that a third-season story about Janeway's death came from her pen. "Coda" pulls together a number of familiar Star Trek themes to explore issues of death, how it affects both the survivors and the deceased, and even throws in a Dying Swan for good measure. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Tristan Riddell, and Suzanne Abbott to discuss Janeway's brush with death, Chakotay's outpouring of emotion, what Jeri Taylor brings to Janeway that other writers can't, and whether or not this mishmash of ideas comes together to create a satisfying whole. In our news segments we find out where the next Destination Star Trek with land, take a peek at Patrick Stewart's new TV series, learn about the latest honor for William Shatner—this time from NASA—and find out what decision almost made in 1966 could have changed the course of Star Trek.

Relativity. Time travel has always been a mainstay of Star Trek storytelling. Starting with “The Naked Time” on TOS all the way to “Storm Front” on Enterprise, our crews have brought us no fewer than 50 flavors of temporal treats. Voyager is tied with TNG for the most time travel outings, and half of these were named to Star Trek 101's list of Ten Essential Voyager Episodes. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Tristan Riddell, and John Mills to discuss one of the most fun—and perhaps most confusing—of these, “Relativity.” From the episode's start as a “Caretaker” prequel to the Minority Report twist, we debate the pacing, the writing, and revel in the fun of the 29th century. In news we take a look at some new Voyager fine art prints from Generation Gallery, explore the 8-bit galaxy with Star Trek: Trexels, and discuss LeVar Burton's support for AIDS research and the We-Care.com contest that lets you win lunch with LeVar. Thirty Days. Tom Paris started his life on Voyager as the carefree badboy. But over the course of seven seasons he grew more than perhaps any other character. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Tristan Riddell and Daniel Proulx to discuss “Thirty Days” and how, though it meant a demotion for Tom, it showed he had learned to care about things bigger than himself. In our news segment we look at the Saturn Award win for the TNG remastered team, the TNG Season Five Blu-ray trailer, a Star Trek t-shirt design contest, and Chris finally gets to talk a bit about his impressions of Star Trek Into Darkness. Fair Haven and Spirit Folk. Being stranded 70,000 light years from the Federation, with just a small ship to call home, meant that the crew of Voyager really loved their holodecks. Tom enjoyed creating new locales for his shipmates, and sooner or later he was bound to go Irish. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Matthew Rushing and To The Journey's Charlynn Schmiedt and Tristan Riddell to discuss Voyager's Irish duology “Fair Haven” and “Spirit Folk.” They're episodes fans love to hate, but there are some important questions asked amidst the cows and barfights—particularly about Janeway. In news we remember actor Malachi Throne, who passed away on March 13, and we gather the latest on other Star Trek actors including Chris Pine being named Male Star of the Year, Patrick Stewart calling for an end to violence against women, plus new projects for Scott Bakula, Karl Urban, John Billingsley, and John Cho. We also examine the beautiful packaging and menu screens for the Enterprise Season One Blu-ray set, and speculate on the likelihood of the third J.J. film dropping in 2016. Far Beyond the Stars. In 1998, during Black History Month, Deep Space Nine aired what is one of the most creative stories in the franchise's history. “Far Beyond the Stars” brought us the tale of a black SF writer struggling to make it in 1950s America. At the same time, the writers wove this period tale together with Sisko's journey as the Emissary of the Prophets, making a standalone piece serve equally well as a part of the overall story of DS9. Twilight. The reset button is one of Star Trek's favorite—and most despised—devices; but sometimes it's just what a storyline is calling for. For the third season of Enterprise the studio decided to take us on a season-long journey into the unknown, into a region known as The Expanse. The Earth-Xindi conflict was a big risk for Star Trek. Creating such an extensive story in Star Trek's past, involving a race no one had ever heard of, could be considered thumbing one's nose at canon. Getting fans invested in the outcome of the conflict was no easy task. The solution? An intentional reset button early in the arc that allowed us to see how high the stakes were. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Hyperchannel host Tristan Riddell to discuss this reset button and the episode “Twilight.” In news we cover the American debut of Star Trek Catan, new Star Trek toys and collectibles from Diamond Select, and we look at IDW's “The Truth About Tribbles” as well as some Movie News and Rumours—including Benedict Cumberbatch's boredom over the Khan question and Chris Pine's decision to really do his job on the Star Trek sequel. Indiscretion. The intricacies of Deep Space Nine are astonishing. By the fourth season, many relationships between members of the crew, residents of the station, and even old enemies had evolved into the rich tapestry that both kept fans engaged and made DS9 less accessible to newcomers. One of the most interesting relationships was the one between Kira and Dukat. Despite having been on opposite sides of a battle, the two found themselves forced to cooperate on more than one occasion. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Ben McCormick of Dork Trek and Tristan Riddell of Hyperchannel to discuss the episode “Indiscretion” and how it evolved the Kira-Dukat relationship. The Circle Trilogy. When Deep Space Nine kicked off its second season, it did so with a Star Trek first: a three-part story. It was essentially a proof of concept for what DS9 would become. It added some much-needed depth to the series and explored the underlying issues facing Sisko as he carried out his mission of preparing Bajor for admission into the Federation. With a mix of religion, government infighting, corruption, and isolationism, the Circle Trilogy—comprised of “The Homecoming,” “The Circle,” and “The Siege”—is an early preview of the greatness to come for Deep Space Nine. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Tristan Riddell to discuss this three-parter and its place within the Star Trek universe. In news we cover new Star Trek artwork from Bye Bye Robot and Jeff Foster, a joint KRE-O stop-motion animation project between Hasbro and Bad Robot, an extra-special featurette on the TNG Season One Blu-ray, the sale of the original Shuttle Galileo, and your chance to buy—yes buy—Armin Shimmerman. Plus we examine Greg's iMessage stream of consciousness while watching Star Trek Generations.

Cause and Effect. We've all been there. Something happens and we are overcome with nIb'poH, the feeling that we've done the same thing before; and we don't mean last Tuesday. It's what we humans calls déjà vu. Only with déjà vu it only seems that events have happened before. This was not the case when the Enterprise-D became trapped in a temporal causality loop while exploring the Typhon Expanse. For Picard and his crew, they really were experiencing the same events over and over. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Tristan Riddell and Michael Fisher as we discuss the thin script that became one of TNG's most classic tales: “Cause and Effect.” In news we cover big changes at the Nashville and Philly cons, TNG theatrical screenings and Blu-ray bonus material details, the ultimate release of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack, an illustrated history of the Federation, new Trek jewelry from Vulcan Tourism, Star Trek 2013 shooting in Iceland, and action figures flying through space.

Q-Less. When DS9 premiered in 1993 the writers wasted no time in bringing one of TNG's favorite characters to the show. Q makes his first—and only—appearance in the sixth episode of the series, and the pairing with Sisko did not necessarily work as well as the pairing with Picard. Couched within this unusual Q story is an interesting commentary by one Star Trek series about its predecessor. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Brian Finifter and Tristan Riddell as we discuss the episode “Q-Less” as well as Q in general and the nature of the society portrayed in Star Trek. In news we cover the TNG EXPOsed panel scheduled for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, IDW's Star Trek/Dr. Who Crossover Comic, IDW's other May 2012 Star Trek titles, Hasbro's KRE-O bricks and KREON figures, and movie news and rumors including Chris Pine's battle with his former agency, Quinto's comments about the next film's story, Cumberbatch's intensity, and Greenwood's contentment. Plus we reveal another of our rejected Star Trek IV plots and Greg channels Simon Pegg.
