You'll hear the raw truth about what financial freedom really feels like when you're also battling a life-threatening condition like Dravet Syndrome. I'll walk you through the mindset, systems, and decision-making tools I've used for over a decade—tools that don't just apply to money, but to health, family, fitness, and faith. Whether you're trying to fix your finances or rebuild your life after a crisis, these eight principles will give you a real-world, repeatable playbook for success. In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I take you through the foundational role of Virginia Axline in translating Carl Rogers' person-centered theory into what we now know as Child-Centered Play Therapy. Axline worked closely with Rogers and applied his concepts to children by introducing her Eight Principles of Non-Directive Play Therapy—a philosophy describing how we show up and relate to children in session, not a list of techniques or tools. I briefly walk through each of Axline's eight principles, highlight their connections to Rogers' core conditions, and explain how they continue to shape our model today. This episode is a reminder that CCPT isn't something we do—it's a way of being, requiring trust in the child, a release of control, and an unwavering presence. If you practice CCPT, you're not just using Axline's methods—you're carrying on her legacy. PlayTherapyNow.com is my HUB for everything I do! playtherapynow.com. I'm excited to share with you the second principle of sanity and victory—a concept that can help you feel more free from anxiety, stress, and worrying about what others think. These principles are designed to bring you a sense of peace while empowering you to create the life you want, which is the ultimate victory. In this episode, we dive into the power of surrender. What does it mean to surrender, and how can it become the ultimate life skill for you? I'll explain the meaning behind this principle and how it helps you flow with life, free yourself from unnecessary suffering, and stay calm, even in challenging circumstances. I'll also show you how to avoid the trap of thinking you need everything to go a certain way to feel okay, and how to let go of that need for control. If you're looking to feel less weighed down by life's demands and more empowered, this episode is for you. So, let's explore how surrender can bring you more freedom and joy, and set you up for victory. --------------------------------------------------------------- As a reminder, sanity, in this context, refers to a sense of peace and the ability to flow with life without sabotaging your well-being. Victory, on the other hand, is about breaking through challenges and becoming who you are truly meant to be. These principles are here to guide you towards both. Principle #2: Surrender Is the Ultimate Life Skill "Surrender to the divine flow is the ultimate life skill. Not my will, but thy will. I remember the fundamental error that I need something out there to be exactly a certain way in order to feel okay in here. Peace is available right now. I'm okay either way. All I need is within me now. I accept the current painting as it is and calmly walk into an entirely different room." Unpacking the Principle Surrender vs. Giving Up: When we hear the word "surrender," it's common to associate it with defeat. However, true surrender means submitting to a greater force, allowing life to unfold without forcing our will upon it. It's about trusting the process and recognizing that we don't always need to control every aspect of our lives. The Divine Flow: This principle encourages you to connect with the divine flow—whether that's a spiritual belief, the universe, or simply the natural progression of life. Understanding that life is happening for you, not to you, can alleviate the burden of needing everything to go your way. Accepting Reality: One of the biggest challenges we face is the belief that we need certain outcomes to feel okay. This fundamental error leads to suffering. We often say, “If only this person liked me,” or “If only I had that job,” then I would be happy. This attachment to specific outcomes traps us in a cycle of anxiety. Finding Peace Now: The statement "peace is available right now" reminds us that we can find calm within ourselves regardless of external circumstances. By shifting our focus inward and acknowledging that our worth does not depend on external validation, we can cultivate a sense of peace. Accepting the Current Painting: Imagine your life as a gallery filled with paintings representing different aspects of your existence. Instead of fixating on the ones you dislike, accept them as they are and choose to explore other rooms in your gallery. This metaphor illustrates the importance of recognizing your current circumstances without being bogged down by them. Applying the Principle in Your Life Now that we've unpacked this principle, let's explore how you can integrate it into your daily routine. Time for Action: Embrace Surrender Your action step today is to practice surrender. Here's how you can do this: Reflect on Your Attachments: Identify areas in your life where you feel anxious or stressed. Ask yourself what specific outcomes you're attached to and how they affect your emotional state. Practice Acceptance: Take a moment to sit quietly and breathe deeply. Repeat the mantra, “I am okay either way.” Feel the weight of your attachments lifting as you accept your current circumstances. Engage with the Present: Each day, find a small moment to consciously surrender. This could be letting go of a minor annoyance or frustration. Notice how this shift affects your overall mood and well-being. Utilize Guided Resources: Consider listening to the guided audio exercises mentioned in previous episodes. These resources can help reinforce your practice of surrender and acceptance. As we conclude this episode, remember that surrendering to the divine flow doesn't mean giving up on your goals. It means embracing the journey and allowing life to unfold as it should. By practicing this principle, you can cultivate a deeper sense of peace and freedom, empowering you to navigate life with grace and confidence.Join me next time as we continue our exploration of the Eight Principles of Sanity and Victory. Until then, may you have the courage to surrender and embrace the flow of life, knowing that all you need is within you now. Thank you for being here!

So, whether you're seeking to overcome anxiety, enhance your relationships, or find greater purpose, you're in the right place. The Journey Begins Before we dive into the first principle, I want to take a moment to share the purpose behind this series. My mission—Operation Divine Liberation—is to empower as many people as possible to live fully and authentically. It's about moving beyond survival mode and into a life of thriving, where you don't just survive to the end, but truly experience every moment as rich and fulfilling. A Call for Support Now, I need to ask you for a small favor. If you're finding value in this podcast, I would greatly appreciate it if you could leave a review. Your feedback helps me reach more people and spread this mission further. Thank you for your support! Introducing the Eight Principles Today, we'll kick off our exploration with the first of the Eight Principles of Sanity and Victory. This principle emerged from my journey of self-reflection, especially as I approached 43 years of age. It's a reminder that as we navigate life's challenges, we can choose to steer our own ship rather than be tossed around by the waves of circumstance. Principle #1: I Am the Captain of My Ship "My suffering isn't in my circumstances, but in how I'm steering. I alone am responsible for my state." This principle is foundational for several reasons: Personal Responsibility: It reminds us that we have the power to choose our responses to life's events. Whether you're facing rejection, failure, or feelings of inadequacy, you can control how you navigate those emotions. Perspective Shift: When we claim our role as the captain, we start to see our challenges not as burdens but as opportunities for growth. It allows us to step back and realize that our suffering often comes from our reactions rather than our circumstances. Empowerment: Acknowledging that we are in charge of our lives is liberating. It frees us from the narrative that we are victims of our situations, allowing us to take proactive steps toward change. Navigating the Waves of Life Let's break this down further. When faced with failure or rejection, it's easy to slip into a negative mindset and view ourselves as inadequate. You might find yourself saying, “I'm not enough” or “I'll never succeed.” These thoughts can feel overwhelming, but it's crucial to remember that they are just thoughts—not facts. What to Do Instead: Recognize Your Feelings: Acknowledge the feelings of inadequacy when they arise, but don't let them define you. It's okay to feel this way; what matters is how you respond to those feelings. Take Ownership: Instead of blaming external factors, take a moment to reflect on your actions and choices. Ask yourself: “What can I learn from this experience?” or “How can I steer my ship differently next time?” Set Your Course: Establish a vision for where you want to go. Your goals and aspirations can serve as the guiding stars for your journey. With clarity of purpose, you can navigate through life's storms with greater confidence. Your Action Step: Claim Your Choice To solidify this principle in your life, I encourage you to take action today. Repeat this mantra to yourself: “I am the captain of my ship.” Say it out loud, write it down, and remind yourself daily. This simple act can serve as a powerful reminder of your agency and strength. Closing Thoughts As we wrap up this episode, remember that you have the power to steer your life in the direction you desire. Embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth, and don't hesitate to reach out for support along the way. Together, we can navigate through life's complexities with courage and grace. Join me in the next episode as we continue exploring the Eight Principles of Sanity and Victory. Until then, may you have the courage to be who you are and to know on a deep level that you are enough. Thank you for tuning in!

What does the movie "Inside Out" teach us about leadership? My conversation with Wayland Lum from Copperbox Leadership Advisory, who brought up "fear is the precursor to courage," reminded me of Joy and Sadness in "Inside Out."The movie is all about human emotions. And there's this interesting dynamic between Joy and Sadness in the movie. The big lesson is that you can't really appreciate joy if you've never experienced sadness. I see a similar principle in what you were saying about fear and courage. They are not as separate as we might think. They are two sides of the same coin.In this episode, you'll find out why fear isn't your enemy, but rather your courage's hype man. Wayland also shared his 8 principles of modern leadership. It counters popular parenting advice in order to empower parents to listen to their babies and young children. These early years are critical to the development of trust and empathy, the necessary ingredients for developing a secure attachment,” said co-author Barbara Nicholson, MEd, CEIM. Attached at the Heart is endorsed by parenting experts, pediatricians and luminary moms such as Alanis Morissette and Mayim Bialik, PhD. “When we co-founded Attachment Parenting International, now known as Nurturings, nearly 30 years ago, we knew that new parents needed evidence-informed education and practical information about how best to nurture their babies. That's how Attached at the Heart came about – as a guidebook for new parents to help them lean into their caregiving instincts and set their children up for success,” said co-author Lysa Parker, MS, CFLE, CEIM. Attached at the Heart has been a key resource for the attachment parenting movement, encouraging parents to trust their instincts and provide responsive care for their children. “Research has proven that early nurturing experiences transform lives. The Eight Principles of Parenting that are detailed in our book are supported by research and rooted in attachment theory. Attached at the Heart provides science and evidence-backed recommendations to guide new parents in their loving journey,” said Nicholson. The 3rd edition provides new recommendations regarding infant sleep, how to help children and their parents maintain a secure attachment, and how parents can learn to be more emotionally self-aware in order to teach their children emotional regulation strategies.

Today, I'm talking to Alicia Warren.-Alicia is currently the Product Design Director at Rippling, an all-in-one HR & IT platform. Before Rippling, she was a UX Lead at JPMorgan Chase. In addition, she's an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago teaching experience design and design operations. On top of all these, she's a city co-organizer for Ladies that UX, a welcoming community promoting women in UX.-When I first saw Alicia's profile, what stood out to me was her diverse work experience in an array of industries such as academia, higher education, and more. But, her road to product design was not easy. As you heard in the beginning, in her early days, she was once unemployed for a full year and seeing where she is now as a director of product design, her journey has been nothing but inspirational.-We delved into a variety of topics such as imposter syndrome, the impact of working in different industries, ethical design, and so much more. I really appreciated the vulnerability Alicia showed during this chat, and I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. And also, Alicia told me post-interview that Rippling is planning to hire new grad designers and interns towards the beginning of next year! So definitely check out the job board link in the show notes! Now, without further ado, here's my conversation with Alicia Warren.===Highlights⭐ How to cope with imposter syndrome⭐ Ethical design & real-life examples⭐ Responsibility as a director of product design⭐ Teaching experience design at college⭐ Her early day struggles & how she overcame them===Links
My interview is with Sandy Rees.Sandy is a self-described “do-gooder” but not the intrusive, goody-goody we often associate with that term. As founder of Get Fully Funded she has helped hundreds of small nonprofits go from “spaghetti-on-the-wall, nickel-and-dime” fundraising, to achieving 6 or 7-figure bottom-line results. Her mantra is making fundraising, fast, fun, and productive. We welcome her into the Eight Principles community! When she's not working, Sandy lives on a small farm in rural East Tennessee with 2 dogs, 6 cats, 2 horses and the occasional miniature donkey fosters. She also volunteers for Project Linus, making quilts for kids in need.My conversation with Sandy is like delving into an adventure novel with giving back as the theme.

Building Sustained Giving, Continuous Growth, and an Engaged, Loyal Donor Base: Don't Make It About Money There are hundreds of millions of dollars in philanthropic funds which lie on the sidelines each year. This is over and above all the millions currently in donor-advised holdings. Accessing these funds is possible for any worthy charitable organization. To do so, nonprofit leaders must first adopt the right mindset, as being truly successful in fundraising is 90% thinking and only 10% doing. Larry C. Johnson is an internationally recognized philanthropy and fundraising thought leader, Larry trains the staff and volunteers of worthy causes to achieve real impact through the creation of reliable, growing revenue streams. He emphasizes principles before methods as the key to long-lasting success. He stresses the simple, the practical, and the joyful. Larry is the Founder of The Eight Principles, the premier brand for educational products and services in relational fundraising and philanthropy. The Eight Principles provides digital education, live workshops, and structured coaching to nonprofit organizations. Author of the award-winning book, The Eight Principles of Sustainable Fundraising, AFP named Larry Outstanding Development Executive in 2010. https://youtu.be/ffII6vyE__Q Former NFL lineman Shawn Harper is the owner and operator of American Services and Protection, a security firm based in Columbus, Ohio. He also owns Bridge Builders International, an inter-denominational non-profit helping children in developing countries. We discuss how successful NFL systems can be applied to the business world and how to create a team-based winning culture. --- Leverage NFL Systems with Shawn Harper Our guest is Shawn Harper with me today. And Shawn is the owner and operator of American Services and Protection, a full-service security firm out of Columbus, Ohio. He is also the owner of Bridge Builders International, a non-profit, interdenominational non-profit helping children in developing countries. He played for seven seasons as an offensive NFL lineman with the Coors, the Oilers, the Rams, and NFL Europe. And he is the author of the Winning Edge, Eight Principles that will bring out the winner in you. Welcome Shawn to the show. Hey, thank you for having me. Let's have fun for the time being, and hopefully we can extract some tools, thoughts, and principles to win at this game of life. That's awesome, that's awesome. Well, listen, first of all, I love to have you on the show, and I'm kind of intrigued, how does an NFL linesman becomes an entrepreneur with multiple businesses, how does that work? Well, you know what, it's something that I kind of fell into, but it was a blessing as well. And so what I mean by that is my brother owned a security firm and through some unforeseen circumstances, he had turned the control of the operation over to me. And I promise you at that moment, I was a deer in the headlights. I had no business sense. I didn't understand. And you know what, actually, to be truthful, you know, close to 20 years later, I'm still learning and I'm still growing. I'm still, you know, learning how to win at this game. But what I did understand is I understand winning. And I was able to grab that not only from sports, but from the challenges that were in my life, as far as the learning disabilities and voted most likely to fail, graduating last in my class in academics, barely starting in high school football, overcoming the adversity and the struggle and to push towards the win. And I played with and for probably one of the most successful businesses in the world. That's the National Football League. It is a business. And so the things that I learned from playing in sports, being around amazing players and coaches, styles, techniques, and strategies and methodologies, I begin to infuse them into the business world. And you know what? I started having a lot of wins. Normally I try to stay away from the word success because that to me is a man-made construct. It's all about winning. And it, well, no, no. I mean, it is. I mean, the problem with success is that it's ambiguous, which means, and also it's not static. I can be in Columbus, Ohio. Thank you so much for the skylight right there. That's very awesome. I've never had this happen before, but I can have $4 million living in Columbus, Ohio. And you know what?I'm doing well.I can have, you know, $4 million living in Manhattan and you know, I'm okay. I can have $4 million in Dubai and I'm like, whoa, you're struggling here. Trying to live downtown Dubai with only $4 million. So guess what? It's not static. And so what I've learned is that it is not static by design to always having you push more towards or towards what you probably already are. You're a winner. And so now infusing those concepts in corporate America, you know, everyone that works with me and work for me, you guys are already successful. The fact that you're here, you're successful. Now let's win. Okay, can you imagine trying to tell Mark Cuban to be successful? Of course he's already successful. Well then what's, okay, so then what's driving him? What's driving these billionaires now? Is it success? No, they're the apex. It's the win.

In his book An Extraordinarily Ordinary Life, Tim shows you through his personal story how to continuously reinvent yourself through job loss, family hardship, and a cancer diagnosis to prosper and give back to others. LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS The sooner you go through a tougher time, the more prepared you are fore future difficulties. Put yourself in situations where you will be uncomfortable as a way to improve yourself. Put your ego on the shelf – especially when transitioning to something new. Get yourself to the next level by pushing yourself just a little bit further than you think you need to go. Tim’s Eight Principles for Life: 1. Be in service to others 2. Never stop learning 3. Punch above your weight 4. Never stand still 5. Think long term 6. Reinvent yourself 7. Don’t follow the crowd 8. Give in order to receive 80/20 is OK. It’s hard to get to 100% in anything. QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Knowing that there will be bumps in the road and that you will need to continually reinvent yourself. Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Someone who reinvents themselves, someone in service others, and someone who never stops learning. In our most recent episode of The Rainmaker Fundraising Podcast we sat down with Larry Johnson, author of The Eight Principles of Sustainable Fundraising, and Founder of the training and consulting firm of the same name. During our conversation, Larry shared how and why focusing on the underlying principles of fundraising is so important to fundraising success for any organization:Being effective in fundraising is 90% how and what you think, and only 10% what you're actually doingUnderstanding the underlying principles of fundraising allows you to adapt tactics and techniques to fit any situation, without sacrificing the core elements of successBased on research conducted by Dr. Russell James of Texas Tech, organizations that can tap into asset-based giving (vs. solely cash-based giving) stand to scale revenues much more significantly than those that focus only on cash asks. Using The Eight Principles model allows organizations to successfully expand into asset-based giving opportunities with their donorsWhen we change our mindset and how we think about philanthropy, donors, and the relationships that undergird all philanthropic activities, exponential revenue growth is possibleIf you want more on The Eight Principles, check out The Oracle League, their high-level online training program.

Philanthropy is more than money. It's more than values. It's all the other ideas and time of the things that they bring, and this is becoming more and more critical as we look at the younger generations. We spend a lot of our time in the fundraising world thinking about how we can better connect to donors, how we can make the ask better, how we can engage donors, how we can increase their passion for giving. But we're probably not spending enough time thinking about how we work, how we can work more effectively, and how we behave as leaders. Well, Larry Johnson knows this and he's written a book called The Eight Principles, and has a really great training program and opportunities for fundraisers to really think about how they're developing as leaders. He's actually somebody who knew Stephen Covey himself and I got on the line with them to talk about The Eight Principles and how we can be better leaders in the nonprofit world. Here's link to Larry's great book on Amazon. And here's the 8 Principles web site.

Jesus boldly proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”. In order to be His disciple, one must make Jesus Christ the foundation of life and proclaim His Lordship in every area of life. Much like the rose window in Chartres Cathedral, a well ordered soul revolves around the great center, which is Christ. In this episode, Bishop Robert Barron begins a series called The Eight Principles of the Word on Fire Ethos with this key principle, namely, “Christocentrism”. Bishop explains how we go about making Christ the priority of our lives, and why we must know who Jesus is in order to do so. The listener questions asks why the Sacred Heart of Jesus is so important in Christian devotion.

I first met Lewis Howes back in my days of working with Social Media Examiner. I liked his technique with video interviews, and wrangled up a lot of interviewees for him; he liked my Facebook trainings, and asked me to put together a book. That was not only the beginning of my career in online training courses; it was, as they say in the movies, the beginning of a beautiful friendship. This week, Lewis and I got the chance to reconnect over the topic of "greatness." Sound a little abstract? Let Lewis persuade you otherwise. Lewis is a true expert in lifestyle entrepreneurship--a business coach with a top-rated podcast, a huge online educational program, earnings in seven figures, and a recognition from President Obama as one of the Top 100 Entrepreneurs in the country under age 30. Truly a great example to all of us working on our online businesses! And you'd better believe Lewis didn't get to this level by aiming for "good enough." His recent book School of Greatness is all about the importance of striving for greatness--in our personal lives, our health, our relationships and, of course, in our businesses. What Does "Greatness" Really Mean? As entrepreneurs, we're a little obsessed with the idea of "success." The symbols are always changing--this year it might be making a decent profit, next year maybe it's hitting six figures, and the year after that, it could be landing a book deal or paying off your house or...who knows? This is the danger of becoming too obsessed with success--the target is always moving. Which means we run the risk of never being satisfied, no matter how much we accomplish. But by focusing our sights on greatness, Lewis says, we're able to experience satisfaction with where we are in our business, and so much more besides. "Greatness is discovering what your greatest gifts are, your talents, what you were born to do, maximizing those gifts, and impacting the maximum amount of people in the world with those gifts." 8 Principles of Greatness Lewis' book breaks greatness into eight simple steps: 1. Clarifying Your Vision Before you set out on your personal quest, you have to clearly see the action steps to make it happen. 2. Embracing Adversity Challenge and struggle are a natural part of growth. 3. Cultivating a Champion's Mindset You can't guarantee that you'll win every time, but you can always set yourself up for the opportunity to win. 4. Committing to Hustle A willingness to do whatever it takes will take you where mere talent can't. 5. Mastering Your Health Your health (emotional, mental and physical) can either hold you back or drive you forward--which way do you choose? 6. Practicing Positive Habits Without intentional habits, life turns into a nothing but a series of reactions. 7. Realizing You Can't Achieve Greatness Alone A powerful, reliable team is the key to building something that’s bigger than yourself. 8. Being of Service to Others The crowning moment of greatness is giving your gift to the world. This is just a summary of Lewis' eight principles--you need to hear these in detail! So click here now to listen to the full podcast episode. Going Deeper My chat with Lewis did more than just outline what it means to be great. It illuminated some of the finer points that past experience had "muddied up" for me. For example... The word "hustle" gives me a little bit of shudder, because I remember my corporate job days where I was really diving in, giving it my all, but felt like I lost myself. Fortunately, Lewis' definition of hustle doesn't mean prioritizing one aspect of your life at the expense of everything else important. Even someone as multi-talented as Lewis feels exhausted and overwhelmed sometimes. Greatness requires a careful check-in system with yourself, to monitor your progress and where you're out of balance. Certain aspects of achieving greatness will come easily to you, while other parts of it are going to be harder. Lewis explains how to fine-tune the process by uncovering the deeper roots of where you struggle. You'll never accomplish the final point of greatness--being of service to the world--if you don't take care of one important thing first. There's so much in this interview, I hope you'll take the time to listen to it today. But for now, I want to leave you with one final quote from Lewis that I thought was particularly...well, great: "The biggest impact we can make is when we become a symbol of inspiration because we follow and chase our dreams. It is our greatest gift to follow our dreams...we are robbing ourselves and others around us when we cop out and don’t chase it out of fear."
Are you curious about ways to build intimacy that aren’t about sex or being sexual? Have you had hints of feeling a deep connection with your partner, and are you interested to know how you might be able to deepen that connection even further? My guest today is Patricia Albere of the Evolutionary Collective, an internationally-known organization devoted to mutual awakening between individuals, and the development of a shared consciousness that transcends our individual (separate) consciousnesses. With over 40 years of experience working with individuals on their growth and personal development, Patricia branched out to explore how individuals could connect more deeply with others. Today we discuss her work in the context of romantic partnership, although the exercises that you will be learning could be applied with anyone - not just your significant other. In today’s society, especially with so many of us focused on our personal growth, there’s a danger of our becoming TOO individuated - separated from each other like islands of highly developed people. However, once you get to that point, you have an opportunity to connect with others on a profoundly deep level, by “waking up the space between you” and creating shared consciousness. In relationships, we’ve had a goal of creating an unconditional, accepting love. However, Patricia calls upon us to love in a way that also demands - where we demand that our partner show up fully, where we call them forth to be their biggest and brightest selves. One of Patricia’s practices is to align yourself so that she space opens up between you and your partner. It’s one of her Eight Principles and is called “mutual engagement” - being a total yes to the emerging experience that you’re having with someone in the moment. The basic practice consists of 30 minutes: For the first 10 minutes, one person is the questioner, who asks “What are you experiencing right now?” The other person responds with what they’re experiencing right then, in that moment - if possible tuning in not to stories about what’s happening, but naming the aspects of experience that are occurring right there in that moment. If they get stuck, the questioner asks again, simply “What are you experiencing right now?” After asking the question, the job of the questioner is to “place their consciousness inside their partner”. This is the kind of thing that will make more sense as you try it - like a nascent ability that you may not have even known that you have, but that will evolve and develop as you put it into practice. As the other person says what they’re experiencing right now, can you get into their experience? After 10 minutes of this, switch roles. After another 10 minutes, you enter a “popcorn” round where you each are tuning into what you’re experiencing - at any moment each of you can speak to “we are experiencing…” After that - take a moment to feel through where you’re at! This shared consciousness can happen with people who aren’t lovers and even with pets! You do need a willing partner to conduct the experiment. The practice can be a “big step beyond” the normal relationship and lead to a deepened, ever-expanding intimacy. You and your partner can take on greater responsibility and intimacy as difficulties and traumas arise in life—all because you share consciousness. If you have a strong foundation, for instance, you can try this technique when you are confronting a problem area in your relationship. If you have a problem, see if you can really get inside the experience that your partner is having. What light and understanding does the shared consciousness bring to the situation? Patricia speaks about “loving the truth.” You have to be a “yes” to what IS. Once you are a “yes” to the truth of your experience, there is an enormous dynamic energy available to you in your life. However, the moment you become inauthentic in your relationship, that’s the moment that you’re no longer in relationship. At that point, you have made the decision to stay separate and not let the other person into your consciousness. Hard to share consciousness when you have secrets that you’re hiding away - since you might not want to let someone in under those circumstances! My guests for this episode are Caroline Wallace and Jesse Peterson, pictured here with their mentor Dave Jacke. Caroline and Jesse are the owners of Inside Edge Design, LCC, a permaculture design firm based in Helena, Montana, that applies the social system design framework of Dave Jacke to their municipal scale projects. During this conversation we talk about niche analysis and social system design and how to apply it to our work as permaculture practitioners to make the invisible structures a more visible part of the process. We use the 6th Ward Garden Park as an example of how they work with a local parks department and government in order to gain approval for the installation of a 1 acre food forest. [caption width="600" align="aligncenter"] The same niche analysis applied to a human social system, the Helena Parks and Recreation department.(Click to enlarge)[/caption] Stepping away from this conversation I'm left with the feeling that their work will have a huge impact on our ability to design with the social and economic systems of our communities in mind in a way that insures we are able to use permaculture in the process. We could use the principles that currently exist, but we are trained up to look to the landscape as the metaphor and sometimes that frame of reference gets stuck. Here with the niche analysis, the axises of social system design (PDF), and Elinor Ostrom's Eight Principles of Managing A Commons, we can leverage other tools into our toolbox that break us out of that strictly permaculture mindset, without having to start from scratch, and then expand upon them based on our own interests and abilities and with permaculture in mind. The road ahead for social systems is an incredible one to be a part of and likely to face numerous challenges as we move forward. I say this because of numerous conversations I encounter online where permaculture is still viewed strictly as a means of permanent agriculture, rather than one of permanent culture.
