Morgan, Chris and Darren discuss how mental relaxation has unexpectedly led to improved race performances in their OCR careers. They explore why being less focused on results and more present in the training process can be transformative for athletes.• Relaxed racing mindset produces better results than forcing performance• Mo's shift from pressure-filled racing to enjoying training has improved her competitive outcomes• Mental calmness during races allows for better tactical decisions and obstacle execution• UK racers tend to start races too aggressively compared to more strategically measured European competitors• World Championships course in Sweden alternates between technical woodland and flat pathways• Appropriate shoe selection depends on terrain and weather conditions - versatile trail shoes recommended• Training philosophy evolution: master obstacles first, focus on running fitness, then combine both elements• Experimenting with different sports and movement patterns may prevent injuries and enhance OCR performanceThis is our classic unstructured format where we dive deep into OCR topics without a set agenda - exactly what started the Accountability Corner journey!Support the show
Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is a sport that challenges you on all fronts and one that's pretty popular among those who seek variety in their fitness endeavor. Reality TV shows like Ninja Warrior and Sasuke have increased its visibility to a wider audience, while organisations like Spartan Race and Viper Challenge have elevated OCR's visibility and participation here. Joining us on the show to unpack the appeal of the sport is Andrew Chiu, the Secretary General of the Malaysia Obstacle Race Sports Association (MORSA). He also shares MORSA's attempt at creating a more accessible IP called Pahlawan Malaysia for the Malaysian audience, as well as how OCR is different from fitness races, despite being governed under the same association. Ginny Maccoll, 73, has an unusual hobby. She competes in Ninja Warrior competitions. Last year, the Guinness World Book of Records named her the oldest female to compete. Though physically quite active from the time she was born, and a proficient dancer, it wasn't until her daughter became a Ninja competitor that Ginny started believing that she might be able to do that, too. She also competes nationally at the Sr. Olympics swim team. Ginny started dancing in 3rd grade and moved from Tennessee to New York City to embark on a professional career in dance culminating in performing in the hit Broadway Show, Pippin, in 1974. This led her to roles on TV commercials, having her own radio show and appearing in a film with Diane Keaton. Ginny's view of aging is to keep trying to do more. Keep challenging your body and your brain." You get one obstacle after another and you can't let it surprise you. We have to keep moving so our moving parts don't rust."Connect with Ginny:Instagram: @ginnymaccollFacebook: ginnymaccoll
When a devastating knee injury threatened to end Thibaut Debuchet's decade-long reign as one of obstacle course racing's elite competitors, many wondered if we'd ever see the Belgian champion on course again. His triumphant return not only defied medical expectations but revealed the extraordinary mental fortitude that's made him a fixture on podiums across the globe. From the moment Thibaut discovered OCR in 2013, his natural strength and athleticism made him a formidable competitor. A remarkable 11th place finish at his first OCR World Championship in Cincinnati announced his arrival, but it was his consistency over the years that cemented his legacy. Through this conversation, he provides a fascinating window into how the sport has transformed – from the technically demanding courses of Denmark and Poland that rewarded raw strength, to today's more running-focused formats that require different training approaches. What truly sets Thibaut apart is his relentless adaptability. While maintaining a full-time job for much of his career, he managed to train 100+ kilometers weekly, constantly adjusting his approach as the sport evolved. "Every year I was cutting down training for obstacles and running more and more," he explains, noting how his annual mileage increased by 1,000 kilometers year after year to keep pace with the sport's direction. This willingness to evolve, combined with his natural obstacle proficiency and tactical race awareness, explains his remarkable podium consistency. The conversation takes a particularly inspiring turn when discussing his rehabilitation journey. After surgery that left him unable to run for three months, Thibaut dedicated 20-25 hours weekly to recovery work, tackling exercises he'd previously neglected. The result? He's returned with improved physiological markers and renewed perspective. "I have a better VO2 max than in 2020. My lactate threshold is higher than before," he shares, demonstrating that setbacks can become opportunities when approached with determination.Whether you're an elite athlete, weekend warrior, or someone contemplating your first OCR, Thibaut's journey offers valuable lessons about balancing passion with purpose, addressing weaknesses rather than just enhancing strengths, and above all, as he emphasizes repeatedly – keeping the fun alive. Follow his continuing comeback story on Instagram @tibo_ocr and watch for his appearances at upcoming international events!Support the show

Send us a textWitness history in the making as the World Strength Games returns to St. George on May 23-24 2025, transforming the Dixie Convention Center into an arena where human potential collides with physical impossibility. Since its humble beginnings in 2017 with just 11 athletes, this event has exploded into an international phenomenon, officially documenting 121 world records and counting. What makes the World Strength Games unique isn't just the superhuman feats of strength—it's the strategic format where athletes must choose their weights wisely, getting just two attempts to etch their names in history. Think of it as high-stakes poker where competitors must decide: play it safe or risk everything for glory. This creates an electric atmosphere as athletes from Australia, Sweden, and across America push the boundaries of human capability. The crowd favorite remains the iconic 402-pound basalt stone carry, modeled after Iceland's famous Husafell Stone but deliberately made more challenging. Last year, spectators erupted as competitors who seemed physically incapable hoisted this massive stone and carried it distances no one thought possible. This year, local hero Miles Kinikini will attempt to shatter the Farmer's Walk world record by carrying a mind-boggling 460 pounds in each hand.Beyond strongman, this evolved fitness expo now features USA Wrestling tournaments, Ninja Warrior courses, CrossFit challenges through the Summit Games, and an NFL-style combine for aspiring athletes. Legendary figures in strength sports will be present, including four-time World's Strongest Man Magnus Ver Magnusson and potentially current reigning World's Strongest Man Tom Stoltman.Perhaps most fascinating is how this event showcases human potential across all demographics. From 73-year-old grandmothers carrying refrigerator-sized weights to discussions on regenerative medicine with stem cell pioneer Dr. Greg Smith, the World Strength Games illustrates that strength isn't just about muscle—it's about pushing limits in every aspect of human performance.Guest Russell Anderson, Founder of the World Strength Games. Step into the beating heart of British obstacle course racing with the Nuts Challenge 3K – a course that has defined the essence of OCR in the United Kingdom since 2010. Unlike any ordinary race, this woodland technical masterpiece delivers approximately 35 obstacles within just 3 kilometers, creating what seasoned racers describe as "relentless" – a perfect descriptor for this iconic event at Camelot Events. What makes the Nuts 3K extraordinary is its remarkable balance of challenge and accessibility. The course winds through technical forest trails where you'll encounter everything from suspension obstacles and hanging rigs to water crossings and natural terrain challenges. Your heart rate will spike within minutes as you tackle the infamous Monty's hurdles, Valkyrie rings, and various technical rigs, with barely enough recovery time between obstacles to catch your breath.Team Nuts member Khani, who has trained at this venue for eight years and earned numerous international podiums, reveals that success here doesn't necessarily come from outright speed. Rather, it rewards consistent energy management and technical efficiency – knowing when to conserve and when to push. The course's unique layout forces racers to utilize every OCR skill: upper body strength, agility, push strength, compromise running, and the mental fortitude to maintain focus when fatigue sets in.For first-timers, the Nuts 3K offers a comprehensive introduction to what makes obstacle course racing special – the perfect venue to experience the sport's original spirit. For veterans, it's a technical playground that tests your ability to execute obstacles efficiently while managing your energy through varied terrain. Either way, you'll leave with muddy trainers, possibly bruised arms from chicken-winging through obstacles, and the satisfaction of conquering one of Britain's most authentic OCR experiences.Don't miss this opportunity to race at the spiritual home of UK obstacle course racing on April 27th. Sign up now and discover why the Nuts Challenge continues to set the standard for technical obstacle racing excellence in the 3K Series.Support the show

This unique background led her to Toughest, one of Sweden's first OCR series, where she immediately competed in the elite division and found her calling. After her groundbreaking OCR World Championship win, Siri's path took an unexpected turn toward military pentathlon. For eight years, she focused on this discipline, developing exceptional technical skills and an unmatched understanding of obstacle flow. Her military training emphasized precision, memorization, and fluid movement through obstacles – creating a mantra she still follows today: "in, through, and out" – approaching obstacles at speed, executing efficiently, and immediately transitioning back to running. The military career culminated in a world championship victory in 2023, but years of repetitive training had taken a severe toll on her body. Plagued by Achilles injuries that threatened to end her athletic career entirely, Siri made the difficult decision to step away from pentathlon and return to her OCR roots with a more balanced approach to training. What followed was remarkable – by incorporating more cycling, varied strength work, and technical obstacle training, she's now running pain-free for the first time in eight years. This physical rehabilitation has sparked a competitive renaissance, allowing her to set ambitious goals for upcoming championships in Portugal and Sweden.Throughout our conversation, Siri offers invaluable insights into training philosophy, the evolution of OCR in Sweden as an officially recognized sport, and finding balance between technical proficiency and running capacity. Her perspective bridges the gap between military precision and the creative challenge of modern obstacle racing.Have you found your perfect training balance? Join us at Accountability Corner as we explore what makes champions tick and how everyday athletes can apply these lessons to their own OCR journeys.Support the show

In this episode of The ManKind Podcast, host Boysen Hodgson sits down with Brandon Clift to unpack five profound lessons he learned from his experience on Australian Ninja Warrior—where he set the record for the fastest elimination in history.Brandon shares how his ego, overconfidence, and underestimation of the challenge ahead led to an unexpected (and humbling) failure. The first one is self-discipline… Number two would be tenacity.Success in business and athletics often comes after facing and overcoming challenges. It takes a special kind of resilience to keep going when things get tough. Troy Helming, CEO of EarthGrid PBC, has that resilience in spades. He's a successful entrepreneur and athlete who has won numerous competitions.Troy shared his story on today's episode of Superpowers for Good. I was impressed by how he didn't let age or setbacks hold him back. In his early fifties, he was competing with 20-year-olds in the Ninja Warrior competition. He didn't win the whole thing, but he did win some of the regional events.Troy's entrepreneurial journey has been just as impressive. He's the founder and CEO of EarthGrid, a company that is developing a new technology for tunneling and excavating. EarthGrid has raised millions of dollars in funding from investors, including $4.5 million from regulated investment crowdfunding.Troy's success is a testament to the power of perseverance. He's not afraid of hard work or challenges. In fact, he seems to thrive on them. When asked about his fundraising efforts, Troy said, "I had to put in a lot of work... I had to give over 2,400 pitches."Troy's story is an inspiration to us all. It shows that we can achieve our goals if we are willing to put in the hard work and never give up.Having raised so much from the crowd, I asked Troy for some tips:Have a compelling hook. Your message needs to grab attention amidst the constant bombardment of information people receive. A unique hook, like a science fiction analogy, can intrigue potential investors.Reinvest capital in advertising. Helming suggests reinvesting 10-20% of raised funds back into advertising to boost the campaign's reach.Simplify your message. Potential investors should quickly understand your company, its traction, achievements, potential upside, and expected timeline for returns.Build a strong network. Start with your network and gradually expand by investing in marketing and creating compelling content.Be sure to bookmark this article so you can find them when you need them!Disclaimer: I am an investor in EarthGrid.tl;dr:* Troy Helming, CEO of EarthGrid, discusses his company's innovative plasma tunneling technology.* EarthGrid's technology offers significant cost and time savings compared to traditional tunneling methods.* Helming shares his experience in raising capital, including the challenges and successes of crowdfunding.* He emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and tenacity in overcoming obstacles and achieving goals.* Helming's journey highlights the power of perseverance and innovation in making a positive impact. How to Develop Self-Discipline and Tenacity As a SuperpowerOn this episode of Superpowers for Good, Troy discussed the importance of cultivating self-discipline and tenacity. He believes these two characteristics are essential for navigating the challenges and setbacks that inevitably arise in life.Illustrative Story:Troy shared how he had to give over 2,400 pitches to potential investors to raise capital for EarthGrid. Despite facing rejection after rejection, he never gave up. He knew it was a numbers game and that eventually, he would find the right investors.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Start with small, achievable goals.* Embrace challenges and view setbacks as opportunities for growth.* Practice delayed gratification.* Surround yourself with supportive people.* Celebrate your successes along the way.By following Troy's example and advice, you can make self-discipline and tenacity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileTroy Helming (he/him):CEO, EarthGrid PBCAbout EarthGrid PBC: EarthGrid invented plasma tunnel boring robots (think Star Wars light sabers) that consume no water, have no emissions & bore tunnels 100x faster at 1/10th the cost. Leon, Chris Worthington, Michiel and guest Bog Hog stomp and slice their way through the arcade original, the Super Famicom/SNES ground-up reimagining and the contemporary remake of that: The Ninja Warriors. The Ninja Warriors Again and The Ninja Warriors Once Again (AKA Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors) all get the usual analysis, including some passionate paeans contributed by the community. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_626.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1.
