Show Notes: Bonni Theriault initially went to business school and worked as a business analyst at McKinsey for a few years, where she worked with consumer products for companies and marketing. After working at Pepperidge Farm for a couple of years, she decided to build her own company and joined forces with a woman who was the head of advertising at Campbell Soup, and together they launched a brand strategy company where they worked for companies like Cadbury Schweppes, Johnson and Johnson, and Stryker. From Marketing to Coaching to Global Emergency Care After 13 years at the company, Bonni found herself tired of constantly pitching to employers and sought coaching roles. She had previously worked closely with the McKinsey assessment team, coaching candidates and helping them improve their interview skills. And so, with the experience under her belt, she returned to McKinsey as a professional development manager. When her oldest son turned 14, she took two years off to spend more time with her children and also volunteered with Global Emergency Care, an organization that trains emergency medicine nurses in Uganda. She worked with Global Emergency Care's marketing and fundraising for two years on a volunteer basis. The Role of Chief Partnerships Officer at Generation When Bonni decided to return to work, she wanted to stay in the social sector but was offered a position at McKinsey. She worked there until an opportunity at Generation was presented. Generation is an independent non-profit that works with unemployed individuals. Bonni has now worked there for seven years. Bonni explains that her responsibility as chief partnerships officer includes global fundraising and employer partnerships for Generation, a company operating in 17 countries worldwide. They train across 40 different professions, based on labor dynamics in each country. They conduct extensive research before starting a training program to identify job vacancies and bring learners from historically underrepresented groups, and they focus on employment in five different industries: tech, green jobs, customer service and sales, skilled trades, and healthcare. They also teach behavioral skills and the importance of having a growth mindset.  The Impact of AI in Job Forecasting and Training AI has been a topic of interest for Generation, as it impacts the skills needed to train learners in specific roles. Bonni explains that they have analyzed various roles, including entry-level roles, which may go away entirely or be significantly impacted by AI, and roles that might have a different set of skills. Jobs such as solar panel installation or healthcare, are likely to be more resilient over time in the face of AI. They are also considering more jobs in the data center technician category, where tech roles are more hands-on and dealing with equipment than providing coding or IT support. How Generation Is Using AI The organization is using AI to deliver training to learners and alumni, ensuring they have the necessary skills for their jobs. They have created AI modules for learners and alumni to help them upskill and remain relevant in their work. AI is also used to help develop the curriculum, with chat bots helping learners answer first-line questions and focusing on more complex material. This helps streamline the curriculum creation process, as it often involves research and talking to subject matter experts. Operational efficiencies are also being used to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Working as a Professional Development Manager  The conversation turns back to Bonni's as a professional development manager at McKinsey. She mentions that a lot of time was spent negotiating with partners and consultants to find the right balance between professional growth and client needs. She built relationships of trust between consultants and partners to influence decisions in a way that was best for everyone involved. She also focused on performance evaluation, helping people understand their strengths and areas for improvement, and helping them find ways to build skills through studies, formalized training, coaching, or mentorship.  Marketing Goldfish and Chocolate Bonni shares her experience working on marketing Goldfish, a product that was initially marketed as a snack for adults drinking beer in bars but later was marketed to moms as an appealing snack for children. She also discusses her experience working with Cadbury, a chocolate brand that had over 150 chocolate brands worldwide. She worked on a brand architecture project to help consolidate these brands and increase their advertising dollars. She was sent boxes of chocolate bars from around the world to analyze packaging and brand identity and helped create seven mega brands for Cadbury, which led to a significant increase in their chocolate market share. Influential Harvard Courses and Professors Bonni mentions a course taught by Professor Dominguez where he focused on critical thinking. He presented different perspectives on events, presenting different sides as the truth. This skill has been passed down through her life and has become essential in today's world. Bonni wishes more classes would take this approach, as it helps students analyze and think critically about various situations and perspectives. Bonni's experiences with Professor Dominguez's course and her critical thinking skills have shaped her life and career. I recorded this episode around 8pm on December 12, right before sitting in the breaker's chair to do an at cost break of a case of 2023-24 Panini Hoops Premium Stock NBA Blasters (20 total boxes). I talk about feeling nervous about doing this break, even if it was an at cost break ($25/team for 30 teams roughly = $32/blaster for 20 blasters). I talk about the origins of breaking, just a rudimentary history based on my past experience, nothing super in depth. Shout out to Chris Justice of Cards Infinity/The Hobby Box for being my first ever breaker back in the early 2010's! I also touch on the potential for shill bidding in streaming platforms when it comes to auction prices for group box breaks (or anything on these streaming platforms such as repacks aka mystery packs and single cards). Finally, Pepperidge Farms remembers back when everyone domed packs and boxes, but alas such is the evolution of language. #thehobby #tradingcards #sportscardhobby #hobbypodcast #hobbyboxopening #collectiblecards #collector #basketball #basketballcards #basketballbreaks #breaking #breakingcards #nba #thecarddiary #hobbysthompson #cardhobby #cardcollector #cardcollecting --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hobbysthompson/support

Remember when the FBI fabricated "evidence," government prosecutors ran with it, and their propaganda mouthpieces amplified it without fact checking or "holding power accountable?" Pepperidge Farms remembers. As it turns out, those explosive pictures of "top secret" and "classified" documents the FBI seized during the raid on Mar-a-Lago last year, which were intended to convict in the court of public opinion before the case against Trump even started, was completely staged for salacious headlines. Shocking that the FBI would do such a thing, it's been a whole 24 hours since they did something similar. Also, this past week, both Trump and later RFK, Jr. accepted invitations from Libertarian Party leadership to attend and speak at the Libertarian Party Convention. The perpetually irrelevancy obsessed "libertarians" are all up in arms about having more than their mothers tune in to the convention to hear what libertarians have to say, but we think this is a brilliant outside-the-box strategy by LP leadership to turn the proverbial microphone up on issues real libertarians care about (war, the Fed, growth of the surveillance state, etc.) by getting big names to come to the LP Convention and address libertarians' concerns. Let's see how it goes. Remember Those Shocking "Top Secret" Evidence Photos from the Mar-a-Lago Raid? Close your eyes and imagine this: a world without stuffed crust pizza. We know!—but that was the dismal state of the Italian flatbread scene before 1985, when Anthony Mongiello, aka The Big Cheese, came up with an innovation that loaded even more cheese onto pizza, while saving crusts nationwide from the trashcan. It was a multi-million dollar idea, Mongiello was sure—if only he could figure out how to protect his intellectual property and license it. But can you copyright the recipe for stuffing the crust? Could that puffy, cheese-filled rim be trademarked, or the technique for making it qualify as a trade secret? Can you patent a pizza? And did Pizza Hut, which unveiled their own stuffed crust pie in 1995, steal his idea—or does the concept of a cheesy crust belong to humanity as a whole? This episode, we're diving deep into the weird and wonderful world of food IP, via the legendary legal battles to defend Pepperidge Farm's Goldfish, Smucker's Uncrustables, and that futuristic mall treat of the 90s, Dippin' Dots ice cream. Legacy brands are hard to replace. Consumers trust these products, often because flavor, texture and mouthfeel are known and reliable. And, yet, they've also shown an increasing willingness to swap familiar snacks and libations with those that are lower in calories or sugar and promoted as better-for-you. That dynamic is becoming even more significant among natural and organic brands that have developed products that taste remarkably similar to – and, in some cases, better than – the familiar items that have become refrigerator and pantry staples. In this episode, the hosts highlight several entrepreneurial brands that are winning over consumers and retail buyers with healthier ingredients and comparable taste to that of traditional counterparts. They also discuss Liquid Death's Death Dust, a new line of drink powders that (surprise, surprise!) have generated some controversy. Show notes: 0:35: John Isn't A Star Wars Guy. Blue Damn Raspberry. While struggling in the great depression, Margaret Rudkin was brave enough to offer her healthy bread, made for her son, to the local baker. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Armadura Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple talking about empire building. Stephen Semple: We have another remarkable female entrepreneur that we're highlighting. Dave Young: Oh, cool. So I don't know much about this one other than I've seen a lot of their marketing over the years and they've become a meme. There's a meme called Pepperidge Farms Remembers. And so we're going to talk about Pepperidge Farms, probably not the meme, but that was a throwback to their marketing campaign. How did they start, Stephen? Stephen Semple: Well, when you become a meme, you know you're a big deal. Dave Young: Oh, yeah. Stephen Semple: Pepperidge Farm was founded in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin in Fairfield, Connecticut, and she went on to sell the business to Campbell's Soup in 1961 for $28 million in 1961 money and became the first woman to sit on the board of directors of Campbell's Soup. She also later wrote a cookbook, The Margaret Pepperidge Farm Cookbook in 1963, and it was the first cookbook to make the New York Times bestsellers list. Dave Young: Wow. All right. Stephen Semple: So she's a big deal. She's a big, big, big deal. And Pepperidge Farm, they lived on this 123 acre farm and it was named for the Pepperidge tree that was on the property. Margaret was a mother of three, smart lady. She was valedictorian of her high school and had a career and worked as a bookkeeper for nine years, and we're talking in the early 1920s before marrying Henry Rudkin. So took a very different path. And Henry was a stockbroker and they went on to have three children, and in 1929, they moved to this farm in Connecticut right when the crash happened. Now, her husband's a stockbroker, and while they were not wiped out by many, times were still tight for them. Now, her son, John, had developed asthma and a number of allergies, and their doctor who was way ahead of his time recommended staying away from processed food. So again, this is like 1930. And one of the things that she realized that she needed to do was make a better bread for her son, John. She wanted to make this whole wheat bread and she had never baked before. So she pulled out these recipes from her Irish grandmother and it took time and their early results were not great. In Margaret's words, the first loaf should have been sent to the Smithsonian Institute as a sample of Stone Age bread. It was hard as a rock and about one inch thick. Dave Young: I like her sense of humor, Stone Age bread. Stephen Semple: Stone Age bread. So after trying a few recipes, she finds one that is nutritional and her son likes. The doctor also liked it and saw the results, and so he wanted to buy it for other patients. And since they could use some extra cash, market crash, husband is a stockbroker, they decide to sell it to Dr. Donaldson, and he recommends it to his patients and other doctors. Margaret also decides to see if she can sell it to a local grocer. So here was the challenge. Dave Young: We go from Stone Age bread to prescription-strength bread. Stephen Semple: I didn't think about it that way, but here's an interesting challenge and here's where I give Margaret a lot of chops. A lot of chops on that.

One of the most successful self-made women in America (according to Forbes) Cordia Harrington joins Tim to talk about her journey and how it exemplifies the American Dream. Cordia is the founder of The Bakery Companies. It's a Nashville-based group of companies that have made baked goods for restaurants and food companies like McDonald's, Five Guys, and Pepperidge Farm. Last year, Forbes Magazine ranked Cordia among America's top 100 Self-Made Women. This episode was first released February 8, 2021. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Cordia_Harrington.mp3 If I were to ask you to define the term, the “American Dream,” your answer may be different than the next person, but there is something that both definitions will have in common. It's the assumption that thanks to the freedoms we enjoy in the United States, thanks to the Constitution that protects our freedoms, we can achieve our dreams so long as we have the right ideas and are willing to do the work. Most people see the American Dream as a set of principles or aspirational ideals that give us the platform to achieve our own individual goals. Democracy, rights, liberty. Through the exercise of these rights, we have the chance to change our place in society and in life. We can be upwardly mobile. We can become more prosperous and successful. And with that, we can provide for our families, our communities and live the life we want. People who study the American Dream say its origins can be traced to the Declaration of Independence, where it says that “all men are created equal,” and that each of us has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” But to better understand the American Dream, it is sometimes good to hear the story of someone who has lived it in a way that few have done. Cordia Harrington is one of those people.
