Our 1950's podcast has a bit of everything. The 1950s can be called the decade of conformity. There is tremendous growth. Population is BOOMING, hence the term "Baby Boomers" came into vogue. The roles of women changed, going from aspirations of Rosie the Riviter in the work force to stay at home mother and homemaker. Television, movies, and other media, all showcased the idealized images of what family life should be. Pop culture gave us rock n roll, "The King", Chuck Berry, and others. Toys like The Barbie Doll, Mr Potato Head, and PlayDoh became very popular. President Eisenhower championed projects related to infrastructure. If we did a word association game with the words "San Francisco," well, two things that might come up very quickly would be Golden Gate Bridge and earthquakes. Actually, both of those subjects came up a lot when we were in San Francisco for some youth outreaches and to tape some special editions of a youth broadcast. We didn't arrange for a quake while we were there, but we did do a program based on them. And we actually did originate parts of other programs from near the Golden Gate Bridge and even on it. According to some local friends of mine there, and they could just be Californians pulling the leg of an East Coast boy, but they said that the bridge might be one of the safer places to be during an earthquake. No, it's not the one that folded during the last big quake, you might have seen pictures of that. They say one reason the Golden Gate could withstand a quake is this surprising fact - it's built in such a way, that it's flexible. In other words, when the earth under it starts moving, it doesn't just stand there rigid and break. It's built to flex when things are shaking. So, apparently a quake might shake it, but probably not break it. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Flexible Doesn't Break." The question is how do you react when things start shaking all around you? The answer may be the difference between cracking under the stress and holding together through it. There's a synergy between the plans we make and God's plans that calls for some of that Golden Gate flexibility. Our word for today from the Word of God, Proverbs 16:9 - "In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." The Bible acknowledges that we will make plans, the question is whether those plans are rigid - if we're rigid about having it our way. That "but" after the part about our plans tells me that God has the right to pre-empt my plan, or delay my plan, or redirect my plan. After all, that's what "Lord" means. Often He leads us toward a certain outcome, only to surprise us with an interruption, or with the realization that He did want us on this road, but for a destination other than the one we expected. But God's idea is always a better idea. What looks like Plan B to me may well have been God's Plan A all along. "But the Lord determines his steps." Notice how James teaches us to make our plans. James 4:15 - "You ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'" See I'm a planner by nature. I work hard on those plans, I pray about those plans. I seek God's direction. But once the plan is set, whether it's for the next few hours or the next few years, I don't like change. But change is built into the system, folks, and those who meet changes with rigidity will eventually crack like an unmoving structure in an earthquake. This recovering "rigidaholic," is that a word?, is slowly but surely learning to enjoy the surprises of God even when they don't appear to be, at least at first, pleasant surprises. And even if it's something Satan has thrown in, my Bible tells me that even that had to be cleared first with my Heavenly Father. If God said it was OK for me, why don't I just try to roll with the quake? For the sooner I embrace His purpose for what's happening, the sooner I'll experience His peace. I should point out that the Golden Gate Bridge, while flexible, is not made out of Play-Doh. It has solid structure and so should your life and your days. This is no excuse for laziness or lack of planning. But it is an encouragement to folks who like control to loosen up a little bit and make room for God to do His very dynamic thing. It's the ones who are flexible that survive the shaking.

Patrick Madrid tackled a great question that could make you scratch your head a bit! How is it logical for God to create everything out of nothing? Our buddy Anonymous Andy from Rhode Island wrote in with a serious theological puzzle. He gets that God is logical and cannot create contradictions (like a four-sided triangle or a married bachelor). Then Andy hits us with the question: "If God created everything out of nothing, isn’t that a contradiction too?" Patrick’s Breakdown: Why This Isn’t a Contradiction 1. A Contradiction = Two Opposing Truths at the Same Time A four-sided triangle is actually impossible because "triangle" means "three-sided figure." If you try to add a fourth side, it's no longer a triangle. That’s a logical contradiction. Creating something out of nothing, however, is not. 2. God IS Existence Itself (Remember the Burning Bush?) Patrick takes us to Exodus 3, where Moses asks God, “Who should I say sent me?” and God replies: "I AM WHO AM." Not "I have being" but "I AM being." Unlike us, who received existence from something before us (our parents), God didn’t get existence from anything: He IS existence. 3. Everything in Creation Had a Beginning Everything we see: planets, people, Patrick Madrid’s radio show, came into existence because something caused it to exist. Here’s the important thing: there has to be a first cause, something that always existed and started it all. That "something" is God: the uncaused cause, the prime mover, the reason anything exists at all. 4. "Before" Creation? There Was No "Before"! We’re stuck thinking in terms of time, but time itself is part of creation. Saying, "What happened before creation?" is like asking, "What’s north of the North Pole?" (Nothing.) When God created, it wasn’t like He was sitting around twiddling His divine thumbs. There was no "before": only God, eternally existing. 5. It’s About God’s Power, Not a Magic Trick Creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) doesn’t mean "poof!" in a magician sort of way. It means that God, who IS existence, shares existence with created things. He isn’t reshaping pre-existing stuff like some cosmic Play-Doh; He gives being itself. Final Takeaway: It's All About God’s Nature Patrick wraps it up by emphasizing: Creating out of nothing isn’t a contradiction; it’s the logical result of who God is. If God wasn't the uncaused cause, nothing else could exist. He created not because He needed to, but out of love. God creating out of nothing isn’t like a square circle; it's the only way anything could exist at all.

That way, you're training your brain to associate progress with pleasure. And who doesn't love a good reward system? Focus and Flow: Your Brain's Sweet Spot Let's talk about flow. You know, that magical state where you're so immersed in what you're doing that time seems to disappear. It's like being in the zone, only better. Athletes, artists, and high performers live for this stuff. But here's the thing: flow doesn't just happen. It's not some mystical force…it's neuroscience. To get into flow, your brain needs two things: a clear goal and a challenge that's just hard enough to keep you engaged, but not so hard that it fries your circuits. Picture it like surfing. If the waves are too small, you're bored. Too big, you're drowning. But when they're just right? You're riding high, baby. The trick is to set yourself up for success. Eliminate distractions. Turn off your phone, lock the door, and tell Netflix you'll see it later. Give your brain the space to focus, and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Why Your Emotions Matter More Than You Think Let me guess. When you hear “personal mastery,” you think of discipline, grit, and willpower, right? And yeah, those are important. But here's the surprise: emotional regulation is the real MVP of personal mastery. If you can't manage your emotions, you're gonna have a hard time mastering much of anything. Your brain's emotional command center is called the amygdala.

Follow Hayden on Instagram @haydendelishaasFeatured RecipesThis pickle soup recipe is from Hayden's Food Blog where he has other delicious recipes including the Cranberry Tortellini recipe we talked about from the book.Pickle SoupServes 6Ingredients:* 3 russet potatoes or 3c (2-3pounds) diced (this also works with frozen potatoes) (300- 420g)* 3 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil (13g)* 2 carrots roughly chopped (130g)* 2 stalks of celery roughly chopped (120g)* 1 yellow onion, diced (150g)* 6 cloves of garlic, minced (60g)* 2 tbsp butter (14g)* 4 tbsp ap flour (30g)* Salt and pepper to preference * 4- 6 cups of vegetable or chicken broth (940-1410g)* 1 heaping cup of dill pickles chopped (about 5-6 pickles)* 1/2c pickle brine (127g)* 1 bunch of fresh dill, divided (100g)* 2 bay leaves (less than a gram) * 1 tsp fresh thyme (10g)* 1c freshly grated havarti cheese (83-100g)* 1/2c heavy cream (119g)* For garnish* Heavy cream for drizzling, sriracha for drizzling and remaining fresh dill If you'd like an addition I grew up eating this with garlic bread! * In a large pot over high heat begin boiling about 6cups of salted water. Once boiling add in potatoes, boil and drain. ( you can make this all in one pot or two separate ones!* cook for 20 minutes and drain. If using a second, over medium heat add olive oil, onion, celery, carrot and garlic. * Cook until translucent about 8-10 minutes . Season with salt and pepper to preference (I use about 1tsp of each) * Once translucent, add in butter and melt then flour and mix until coated. Slowly start to incorporate the broth (you'll see it change to a light creamy color) add in the potatoes, pickles, pickle brine, fresh herbs and simmer for 20-30 minutes over medium heat. Add in the cheese and heavy cream and mix until combined! You can enjoy from here or dress a bowl! To a bowl add your soup, a drizzle of heavy cream, sriracha and fresh dill! Enjoy!Pickle PopcornThis Pickle Popcorn recipe is from Hayden's Food Blog He calls is Netflix and (Chi)DillIngredients:3 tbsp Oil of choice (see tips)1/2c Popcorn kernels (a heaping 1/2c)5 tbsp (or more) Good quality butter (I like to use Kerrygold) ½ bunch Dill fresh or dried, chopped½ tsp Italian seasoning ½ tsp Garlic powder ½ tsp Onion powder 1 tsp cheese powder (optional) 3 tsp Pickle juice (brine) from a jar of picklesSalt ( i would recommend fine salt for this)-optional hot sauce for serving if youre Selena GomezTips: you can use avocado oil, refined coconut oil, vegetable oil, or even olive oil! I would recommend using a dutch oven or your favorite soup pot for this recipe (something with a lid)InstructionsTo a large pot over medium to high heat, add the oil, when the oil is hot add 2 or 3 kernels to test to see if its ready, then add the rest of the kernels and cover, leave a little crack to let some steam escape if needed. Another helpful tip when making popcorn over the stove, is to gently wiggle the pot while holding the lid and handles to jiggle the kernels around. Listen to the kernels, when it has mostly stopped popping, removed from the heat then add to a large bowl.In the meantime begin melting the butter on the stove or microwave in 15 second intervals. Add the seasonings to the butter along with the pickle juice, stir to combine, slowly incorporate over the popcorn and give it a light shake to distribute the pickley butter. Serve immediately! It's so funny.Hayden Haas [00:00:39]:Thank you so much, and thank you for having me on.Stephanie Hansen [00:00:41]:Oh, it's a blast. So let us talk about your cookbook and, like, use you somehow have not been on my radar. And then I, like, found your Instagram, and I was like, oh my gosh. This guy's from the Midwest. He has almost 500,000 followers. He's friends with Molly Yeh. I mean, how would how tell us about how you got started in the cookbook world because you must have been a food stylist. Your book is incredible.Hayden Haas [00:01:06]:Thank you so much. I appreciate that. Yes. I did have a little bit experience, with, food styling. I got my start on Food Network surprisingly as a dishwasher and sort of led me, on an unexpected path into the food world where I was then met with Molly and then, you know, the pandemic happened one thing or another. And then I was her personal assistant and then got to see all everything that's involved with that whole world. And Molly was such a joy and kinda taught me how to write my own recipes. And I'm so thankful for all the time that I did spend with her, learning behind the scenes.Hayden Haas [00:01:51]:The most important part was obviously the recipe development but also kind of, when I was working behind the scenes I kind of learned how to film and direct my own videos as well as, edit them at the same time too. So it was kind of just a full package deal. I still to this day don't even really realize that I'm doing so many people's jobs, and I'm so thankful that I had that opportunity.Stephanie Hansen [00:02:18]:Yeah. Your your book is well, it's beautifully shot, and you can tell, there's a lot of lifestyle to it and, yes, we're looking at recipes, but many times we're looking at, not completed recipes, like the ingredients of making it. There's a lot of color in the book. Whoever did the design, it has a real rainbow flare, which I think is really cute. Yes. I just loved it. I really got the book, and it feels really like, if I knew you, I feel like this is really a reflection of you.Hayden Haas [00:02:54]:Thank you so much. I that was something that was really important to me. I kind of think of this as, like, my debut album. And I it's so so special to me because one of my best friends actually took all of the photography for me, and there's so much, family and friends and everything tied into it. And my designer's name was Lindsey Dobbs from Penguin Random House. So I I really wanted to include a lot of color. That was something that was really important to me and kind of all seasons. Even though,You know, it is based mostly in the Midwest, and we have winter here maybe, like, 6 to 9 months of the year. So, trying to cover all of those bases and get pictures was probably the hardest part.Stephanie Hansen [00:03:42]:Yeah. And people I mean, just the shooting of a book and having the seasonality to it, it is hard. Like, I'm working on a book that's a sort of cozy winter cooking book, but we haven't had snow for over a year. So I'm trying to find snowy pictures.Hayden Haas [00:04:01]:Yes. Yes. You're also a published author, and I was just checking out your books as well.Stephanie Hansen [00:04:07]:I am a published author, but I think I'm in a different vein than you. Because while I do like developing recipes, my point of view is usually typically from, like, someone's inspired from a grandma or a friend or and then I kinda take it and make it my own. I am getting a little more confident in just being like, oh, I'm just gonna make this and kinda knowing how things come together.Hayden Haas [00:04:33]:Yeah. And that's, something that's super important in my cookbook too because that was inspired by all the important women in my life, like my mom and my grandmas and, you know, of course, like Molly, there's so many people who have contributed to me at this point that I couldn't not also include them and all these people who have motivated me and supported me, including all of my followers and stuff. Like, this wasn't originally my intended career path, but I am so thankful that it is.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:04]:What was your intended career path?Hayden Haas [00:05:06]:I went to school for architecture and drafting. I had dreams of becoming an architect, and then I decided that that wasn't really where my heart was, but it was a very good paying job.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:18]:And you live in North Dakota. Is that correct?Hayden Haas [00:05:21]:No. I actually recently just relocated to Minneapolis.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:25]:Oh, so you're probably like a neighbor somewhere.Hayden Haas [00:05:28]:Yeah. I'm freshly here for a couple of months, so I'm still kind of catching my bearings and, making my little space home, but Minneapolis has been so welcoming, and I have literally no complaints. It's a really great place to be.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:45]:Yeah. So now are you here for a short time? OrHayden Haas [00:05:49]:No. I'm here to stay until further notice.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:53]:Okay. So I need to I'm gonna connect with you, and we'll have a cup of coffee, and maybe I could help because do you need do you need this sounds so weird. Do you need friends?Hayden Haas [00:06:05]:I do need friends. Yes. Been so actively looking for friends. I need more foodie friends. You know, I'm kind of like I don't wanna say I'm a shut in, but since I work from home, I just cook all this food, and I get to share it with all my friends and neighbors. So it's just a great little opportunity and kind of like a howdy neighbor to Minneapolis.Stephanie Hansen [00:06:29]:Yeah. I love it. And same. So I'm always cooking tons of food. I'm also, like, because of the radio show, we go out a lot, but I'm always looking for people to eat with. I know that seems weird, but, like, not everyone loves to go out.Hayden Haas [00:06:46]:I'm also in that category. I also love having people over because, you know, you make a ton of cozy recipes. So it's like when you provide that environment of home and, just being able to host somebody in your home is just so wonderful, and that really fills my cup.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:04]:Yeah. Alright. Well, we've got a mission to get you introduced because we're getting into what I think could be the long winter months. I don't know. It's 80 degrees out, and it's practically Halloween, so it's very weird.Hayden Haas [00:07:17]:Wow. So strange how that's happening. I always knew Minneapolis was slightly warmer than where I'm from in North Dakota by at least 20 degrees. So I'm like, oh, if this is really what it's like, I'm all on board.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:29]:No. It's not at all. It's usually cold as hell. Alright. So I first found out about you from my friend Paul Folger from channel 5.Hayden Haas [00:07:41]:Oh.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:41]:And he was telling me about when you were on Twin Cities Live with him and Elizabeth and that you brought this pickle popcorn.Hayden Haas [00:07:52]:Yes.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:53]:Okay. And I'm obsessed with popcorn so much so that I really am not supposed to eat it because I used to eat so much of it. I had, like, stomach problems.Hayden Haas [00:08:03]:Oh, no.Stephanie Hansen [00:08:05]:But he brings me in this ziplock bag full of this pickle popcorn, and pickles are like, I'm obsessed with pickles, and I love popcorn. How did you think of the pickle popcorn recipe? Because it's a great recipe.Hayden Haas [00:08:19]:Thank you. I am in the same category as you as popcorn was literally my favorite snack when I was growing up. I just made a video talking about this slightly. Like, I was such a little weirdo with my popcorn. I mean, after school, we lived pretty close to a movie theater, so you could, like, pop in and grab some movie theater popcorn as a great little snack. So popcorn's always been one of my favorite things, along with pickles. So combining the 2 just kind of felt great. I love using pickle brine as an ingredient, and any opportunity to use fresh dill.Hayden Haas [00:08:55]:And we all know and love butter, so I kinda just fell hand in hand.Stephanie Hansen [00:09:00]:This is funny because I really am obsessed with dill too just because I grow it and it's like it volunteers in your garden where you don't want it, and then you're like, oh, I have dill, and you just have so much of it. You just end up using it all over.Hayden Haas [00:09:14]:And I think that's such a great problem to have too. I I don't know. It's either dill either because I'm also a little bit of a gardener myself. You can either grow it, and then it'll have, like, a bunch of abundance, or you're just done for it and you're not gonna have dill that year.Stephanie Hansen [00:09:28]:Yeah. I've had those years too. And then, like, the years you have it, you're like, wow. What I thought was so fascinating about the popcorn recipe was that you used the brine with the butter and it it didn't completely sog out the popcorn. Like, it did have kind of a, day after taste a little bit, but I love that about popcorn.Hayden Haas [00:09:50]:Me too. I, not to go back to movie theater popcorn, but I always loved it more the second day.Stephanie Hansen [00:09:58]:Yeah.Hayden Haas [00:09:58]:So when when you kind of combine those together and you coat them kind of gradually, it, you know, you don't want it to be, like, soggy from all of the butter and whatnot. So kind of figuring out how that works is, you know, you kind of figure it out the more often you make popcorn.Stephanie Hansen [00:10:14]:Well, Paul said that you were considering putting it in your next book.Hayden Haas [00:10:19]:Yes. I haven't announced that I'm doing the next book or anything like that, but I am so happy to share it. And so that is one of the next, recipes that I do plan on sharing. But it is already available to share on my blog, and I would happily make a video for everyone to follow along with.Stephanie Hansen [00:10:38]:Yeah. I really loved, he brought it in. I am not supposed to eat popcorn. I ate a handful. I loved it. And he was like, oh, no. You can just keep the bag. I was like, Paul, I can't because I have no self control, and I will end up eating this entire bag either by the time the show's over or on the way homeHayden Haas [00:10:58]:in the car. Totally delightful.Stephanie Hansen [00:10:59]:We laughed about that. When you your book has everything. Like, you have desserts, you have cozy casseroles and hot dishes, you have drinks, which I also really enjoy. I have a lot of drinks in my book too. You've got a lot of soups. We're in the Midwest. Right? Soups are great. How did you decide? You have a lot of recipes in here too.Stephanie Hansen [00:11:22]:Like, they must have been cutting you off.Hayden Haas [00:11:24]:I we had kind of a tricky time deciding on we did originally have more recipes that we wanted to do, but we kind of decided on, you know, the photography that was really important to include and any, like, follow along steps. But there's over a 125 recipes. I tried to make it, kind of accessible, for everybody to be able to shop because I came from a really small town where, you know, some of the largest stores you had were probably like a Walmart or something along those lines, Target, Walmart. So you should be able to shop most of these ingredients from places like those wherever you are in the world. So I took a lot of thought into that. So you based on things that you have in your pantry and or fridge that are just like staples to always keep on hand. I it was really important to me to, share with the reader that you can make all these delicious things with things that you probably already have. A lot of my personal favorites, I'm a big breakfast and brunch kinda guy.Hayden Haas [00:12:28]:I also love, like, the meat and potatoes of things. I think that's kind of very Midwest. If you know my dad, he's, like, always more protein, always more protein. Just can't get enough of that meat. And soups are kind of like my favorite thing in the entire I think it should have its own food group because it's just the best, and I love just alwaysStephanie Hansen [00:12:52]:You and I are gonna be fast friends, dude. I can just tell.Hayden Haas [00:12:55]:No. We need to have you over for a fine bowl of soup. And then, of course, I'm not much of a sweet tooth, but I love making them for other people. And then same with, the adult beverages, there's mocktail options in there too. So I really wanted to cover all of the bases, things that I regularly enjoy or that were from my childhood and nostalgic, but slightly modernized and from foods of all kinds of cultures that I really wanted to share and also put my own little fusion or twist on.Stephanie Hansen [00:13:24]:You seem very excited about your food life. Do you ever feel, like, taxed by it? I mean, with so many followers, you gotta be spending a lot of time on social media. Does it ever feel like you're giving up too much or just like you're burned out?Hayden Haas [00:13:39]:I I that's a great question. Thank you so much for asking. I definitely experience burnout, on those days. I would say that I film maybe like 3 or 4 days of the week, and sometimes it can be 2 recipes, sometimes it can be 3. So it kind of just depends, weighing on my schedule and then other projects that I have going on, trying to make that all work. It's so much fun and stressful at the same time. I love it so much that it doesn't always feel like work, but that doesn't mean that I don't get emotionally or physically taxed from it. So sometimes where I'm like, today is not a filming day or, like, let's say I get, like, a zit or something like that.Hayden Haas [00:14:20]:You know? Because we all have everyday problems and stuff like that too. I, that's also really important where it's like, I don't, like, edit any of my videos where it's, like, lighting them different or even when I'm food styling, it's not like I'm doing anything crazy. So I want people to when they see a video or recipe of mine where it's like, how you see it is probably how it's gonna show up. That's, you know, how I intended it. And I tested that recipe 10 times or a 100 times. So it's like, I want you to have that result because I know the person at home, whether they're living on a budget or, you know, just trying to get more experience in the kitchen, that they have that confidence and they can pretty much jump into any recipe in the book that you know, it's anybody from any walk of life would be able to. So that was super important. And but sorry to get back to your original question, being taxed by the or tax or burnout.Hayden Haas [00:15:19]:I definitely experienced burnout, but those are the days where I'm like, it's more of a work on my computer type of day and Right. Let's order some takeout.Stephanie Hansen [00:15:28]:Yeah. I, when I looked at your book too, because I'm in the final like, I'm just in the final edits of my book. Yeah. That's due December 31st for my second one. We have a couple of, like, similar recipes. They're different, but they're similar. So it'll be fun to see when we when mine's out, we can kinda compare notes on some of the recipes.Hayden Haas [00:15:53]:I would love that. And that's something that I also value so much about the community and followers that I've built is a lot of these people do try the recipes, whether they post it or share it or whatever. People are making it for their families, and it's bringing so many people together, which is what makes me so happy. Or I love when somebody makes, like, a soup or a dessert recipe for, like, their friends and stuff because that's what I love to do. Yeah. It just feels full circle and it really makes my day.Stephanie Hansen [00:16:24]:So what is the first dish that you remember, like, making yourself? Can you remember? Did you cook as a kid?Hayden Haas [00:16:32]:There's so many things. My mom always had us in the kitchen. So we were always doing, like, baking and fun stuff like that. A recipe I guess this the one I can remember the most is not actually, like, an eating type recipe, but my mom and I used to make our own Play Doh.Stephanie Hansen [00:16:49]:Yes.Hayden Haas [00:16:50]:Yes. And, I mean, occasionally, I'm sure I you know, kids eat Play Doh, so I would taste it and be like, oh, that's salty. And so, like, not quite a recipe that's supposed to be edible, but that's the one that I think about and I wanna share all the time, but I don't have any kids to play Play Doh with.Stephanie Hansen [00:17:05]:That's funny. No. I think, yeah, we made that a lot as kids. And, also, I don't even know why we ever made this, but we used to make our own, like, homemade tootsie rolls.Hayden Haas [00:17:15]:Oh my gosh. I bet that was so special.Stephanie Hansen [00:17:17]:Yeah. And I don't know where we got the recipe or why we would make those, but I had sisters and so that's what we would do.Hayden Haas [00:17:24]:You have a mother's sweet little treat like that.Stephanie Hansen [00:17:26]:Yeah. Are you a freezer hoarder because you're cooking so much?Hayden Haas [00:17:30]:Oh, yeah. There's a lot of, disorganization that happens in but at the same time, I'm pretty good about, not having food waste. I kind of like auction things off to my neighbors and, you know, people that I meet that are kind of like within the vicinity where I'll say like, hey. For example, I just made, my breakfast pizza recipe and so I can kinda just auction it off to my friends who are all super busy and whatnot. And, oh, it's just great because I kinda get to feed my own little community and get their feedback at the same time where it's like, yeah. Don't add onions to this or that was too salty or something like that. So it's so helpful to get that here.Stephanie Hansen [00:18:12]:I'm creeping my neighbors out actually because I'm always like I just this morning, I did a TV segment. I had all these rice crispy bars. I didn't want them in the house because I'll eat them. So I just loaded up paper plates and kinda went door to door. And people are just like my neigh my next door neighbor, I know. She's just like because I this in this week alone, I've brought them a chicken pasta dish. I brought them apple muffins, and then I brought them rice crispy bars. And that's, like, within the last 3 days.Hayden Haas [00:18:46]:Yeah. I don't hear the problem in any of this. I think you're probably the favorite neighbor.Stephanie Hansen [00:18:51]:I hope.Hayden Haas [00:18:52]:I'm sure of it because I do the same thing. I was dropping off tiramisu, cheesecake, and some pizza and brownie. So we're in the same category. And if they don't want those leftovers, I'll take them.Stephanie Hansen [00:19:05]:That's so funny. Yeah. I need to I just I feel like, oh my gosh. And I have a brand new neighbor that's literally right next to me that I haven't met yet. And they looked like they moved in over the weekend and then maybe were are doing some painting. So I left some of the muffins on their, like, door. And I my friend said, she goes, do you real do these people realize who you are and, like, what a gift it's gonna be living next to you? I'm like, I don't know.Hayden Haas [00:19:42]:No. I, 100% support all of that. Spread the love. I always say it's like, Nesquik, don't come for me, like, legally, but I always say share the wealth. And if your wealth is baked goods, share them. People are gonna love it. Exactly.Stephanie Hansen [00:19:55]:And thenHayden Haas [00:19:55]:it's not like you're gonna give them anything terrible or anything. Yeah. We only weigh our best creations. Right?Stephanie Hansen [00:20:01]:Yes. Exactly. So when you were at Food Network, you did you directly work on Molly's show or did you work on some other shows too?Hayden Haas [00:20:10]:I worked on Molly did a couple of things with HGTV, so that was fun to see what that was like. But I did, I started off as a dishwasher and then moved up to a food stylist. And then, at the same time, I was also Molly's assistant. And I've also had my own little touch of reality television because I was on Food Network's Chopped.Stephanie Hansen [00:20:35]:Oh, you were.Hayden Haas [00:20:37]:It was love.Stephanie Hansen [00:20:37]:Hear about that.Hayden Haas [00:20:39]:It was really fun. I did a blind date episode where yeah. It was so much fun. I was matched with somebody that I had never met before. And so you kinda go on a blind date. And then, you know, you get the basket with all of the mystery ingredients. And I think my ingredients were, like, like a cranberry kiss cocktail and, like, a red tail snapper and some heart shaped ravioli. And we I my partner and I, when we went into it, we initially kind of had, like, a situation where I was like, do you wanna take the lead, or do you want me to be sous chef or whatever? And he decided he wanted to be the lead, then I was like, I'll support you whatever you wanna do through the way.Hayden Haas [00:21:25]:So I was happy to do that. I wouldn't have, necessarily made the dish that we ended up making. Spoiler alert, I didn't end up winning, but it is still a really great episode, and I'm still friends with all the women on that show. SoStephanie Hansen [00:21:38]:So what did you end up making? Because I was listening to your ingredients and thinking, oh, well, the cranberry's gotta be a sauce.Hayden Haas [00:21:45]:Sure. If you're familiar with, like, kind of like a pate situation, it was kinda like that but with fish. So not not always a big winner. If I could have made what I wanted to, you since you have the cookbook right there, I won I would have made or leaned in towards my cranberry tortellini recipe.Stephanie Hansen [00:22:04]:Yeah.Hayden Haas [00:22:05]:And I think that would have, like, surprising people. But it also might have been, like, kinda boring because it's, like, pasta and Alfredo cranberry sauce or whatever. You know?Stephanie Hansen [00:22:15]:No. Alfredo sauce is never boring. I don't care. I feel like I eat noodles 62 times a week.Hayden Haas [00:22:22]:Yeah. I'm always a huge advocate of pasta myself.Stephanie Hansen [00:22:26]:Yeah. That's I'm gonna just go to that recipe right now, and we're gonna talk about it. Because, I love pasta. I eat pasta all the time. And I made spaghetti for a friend this weekend, and she came over and she goes, no offense, but can we just order takeout? I really hate noodles. What? I was like, who are you?Hayden Haas [00:22:48]:Interesting.Stephanie Hansen [00:22:49]:Yeah. I thought it was. Okay. So for cranberry sauce, let's see what we have in there. Here we are. Yep. Oh, I went on the wrong page.Hayden Haas [00:23:03]:Puerto Rican Alfredo sauce that we make from scratch, and then I do have my grandma's cranberry recipe. It it is like a I like I guess I like my cranberry sauce a touch sweeter, but, you know, you can make it as bitter as you want to.Stephanie Hansen [00:23:21]:Okay. This looks really good. It's got it's the sauce is kinda pink. It's got a sun dried tomato, mushrooms, artichoke hearts. Looks delicious.Hayden Haas [00:23:29]:Yeah. Big fan. When I was in college, there was this little restaurant, not not Olive Garden. But when when I was waiting when I was waiting tables in college, that was one of the more popular dishes from that restaurant.Stephanie Hansen [00:23:46]:Let's talk about all the, like, plates and the dishes in your book. Are these all things you own, or did you guys rent things?Hayden Haas [00:23:53]:No. I did not rent things. All of those were things that I do own because I am kind of a mix match person. So none of my plates match. None of my cups match. I, maybe a bit of a maximalist, if you will. So I love selection. I also kind of display them in my dining room.Hayden Haas [00:24:14]:So then whenever I have somebody over, I'm, like, grab any glass. So then that person kind of gets to pick whatever fun glass or fork or plate, whatever theyStephanie Hansen [00:24:23]:Phew. I love that idea.Hayden Haas [00:24:25]:So much fun. And then, you know, you always get really fun pictures at the same time.Stephanie Hansen [00:24:30]:Yeah. For sure. And I am feeling a little bit like and and I'm getting to the end of this book, so I'm feeling a little horny at this point. And, like, oh, I need to, like, maybe get rid of some of this stuff or repurpose it to the next house. Goodwill is my friend, but sometimes the things go back to the Goodwill too. Right?Hayden Haas [00:24:48]:Hey. You just don't have to tell me. I'm a avid thrifter myself, so I love, finding, like, a plate or 2 every time you visit or something where you're like, I have a vision for this particular plate, and it's gonna have some delicious pasta on it. And or here's this old pillowcase that I could sew into a napkin or something. So it's like, repurpose those things, make them beautiful, and share them with everyone.Stephanie Hansen [00:25:14]:Okay. I love that you would actually repurpose a pillowcase into a napkin.Hayden Haas [00:25:17]:Oh, and I've turned an old tablecloth into something els Shoot. It's all mix-and-match. I tell you, I love it. I have a whole cabinet ' whole cabinet just for my linens.Stephanie Hansen [00:25:29]:Can you think of something, like, where you got a real score at a thrift store? Like, do you have a favorite thing you thrifted?Hayden Haas [00:25:37]:Good question. I do, but I don't have, I really would love to provide, like, a image for you. But I since I am such an avid thrifter, I have a whole collection on my living room wall of mirrors. Cool. So it's kind of like you know how people have those, like, picture collages and stuff inStephanie Hansen [00:25:59]:the house?Hayden Haas [00:26:00]:It's kinda like that, but for mirrors. So it's like the whole and they're all different kinds. Like, some are new and nice. Like, I'm sure some are from, like, a Target or whatever. Sure. Got a cute one. But they're all different kinds and, some have little stands on them. I've my favorite one is, like, this vintage cover girl mirror.Hayden Haas [00:26:21]:Oh, it's so it's, like, tiny and cute. I everybody loves it when they come and check it out.Stephanie Hansen [00:26:26]:Oh, that's fun.Hayden Haas [00:26:27]:Yeah. And I don't know if a mirror is probably the greatest example because I really don't even look at myself in the mirror that much, but it's just such a fun little, addition to home and calling it cozy, and it's always a conversation starter when somebody walks in the door. Please enjoy.Stephanie Hansen [00:26:52]:So when you think about, a cookbook that you wish you had written, can you think of 1?Hayden Haas [00:27:02]:A cookbook I wish I would have written.Stephanie Hansen [00:27:04]:Yeah. Like, you just find it so inspiring.Hayden Haas [00:27:07]:I there's so many people that I'm inspired by. That's so tough. I would say somebody who I am always inspired by what is Molly Ye, of course.Stephanie Hansen [00:27:19]:Yeah.Hayden Haas [00:27:20]:I learned so much from my time with her. There's a couple of other people who are kind of influential. So going back a little bit when I was kind of burnt out in between architecture and whatnot, also very Minnesota of me, I went to go work for Target, like, part time, but then they ended up wanting me as a manager, which is great. I loved my time with them. In that time shift, that's when I started cooking for myself, and I really didn't have, like, social media before that. So it, like, started out fresh at, like, the age of 27 and started posting, like, food, blogs, pictures, like, kind of starting out, my own little food photography or food journey. And I started my mom had gifted me Chrissy Teigen's cookbook. And I was, so thankful for that, and I cooked my way through it.Hayden Haas [00:28:10]:And I started sharing some recipes, and she started commenting and liking on some of my things. And that inspired me to do more, which kinda led me on my way to meet Molly Ye. But there's so many other people like Anthony Bourdain and, you know, most of the people on Food Network. So that was, like, so funny that in my small little town that I was given, like, an opportunity for something I didn't think I would ever have.Stephanie Hansen [00:28:34]:Yeah. So And Chrissy Teigen's cravings book, I thought that that was a good cookbook. She's gotHayden Haas [00:28:41]:about 3 or 4 in her series. I've haven't done as much investigating into the newer books, but the first couple were so great and, like, everything, you know, you can pretty much make from home.Stephanie Hansen [00:28:55]:Yeah. Follow Hayden on Instagram @haydendelishaasFeatured RecipesThis pickle soup recipe is from Hayden's Food Blog where he has other delicious recipes including the Cranberry Tortellini recipe we talked about from the book.Pickle SoupServes 6Ingredients:* 3 russet potatoes or 3c (2-3pounds) diced (this also works with frozen potatoes) (300- 420g)* 3 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil (13g)* 2 carrots roughly chopped (130g)* 2 stalks of celery roughly chopped (120g)* 1 yellow onion, diced (150g)* 6 cloves of garlic, minced (60g)* 2 tbsp butter (14g)* 4 tbsp ap flour (30g)* Salt and pepper to preference * 4- 6 cups of vegetable or chicken broth (940-1410g)* 1 heaping cup of dill pickles chopped (about 5-6 pickles)* 1/2c pickle brine (127g)* 1 bunch of fresh dill, divided (100g)* 2 bay leaves (less than a gram) * 1 tsp fresh thyme (10g)* 1c freshly grated havarti cheese (83-100g)* 1/2c heavy cream (119g)* For garnish* Heavy cream for drizzling, sriracha for drizzling and remaining fresh dill If you'd like an addition I grew up eating this with garlic bread! * In a large pot over high heat begin boiling about 6cups of salted water. Once boiling add in potatoes, boil and drain. ( you can make this all in one pot or two separate ones!* cook for 20 minutes and drain. If using a second, over medium heat add olive oil, onion, celery, carrot and garlic. * Cook until translucent about 8-10 minutes . Season with salt and pepper to preference (I use about 1tsp of each) * Once translucent, add in butter and melt then flour and mix until coated. Slowly start to incorporate the broth (you'll see it change to a light creamy color) add in the potatoes, pickles, pickle brine, fresh herbs and simmer for 20-30 minutes over medium heat. Add in the cheese and heavy cream and mix until combined! You can enjoy from here or dress a bowl! To a bowl add your soup, a drizzle of heavy cream, sriracha and fresh dill! Enjoy!Pickle PopcornThis Pickle Popcorn recipe is from Hayden's Food Blog He calls is Netflix and (Chi)DillIngredients:3 tbsp Oil of choice (see tips)1/2c Popcorn kernels (a heaping 1/2c)5 tbsp (or more) Good quality butter (I like to use Kerrygold) ½ bunch Dill fresh or dried, chopped½ tsp Italian seasoning ½ tsp Garlic powder ½ tsp Onion powder 1 tsp cheese powder (optional) 3 tsp Pickle juice (brine) from a jar of picklesSalt ( i would recommend fine salt for this)-optional hot sauce for serving if youre Selena GomezTips: you can use avocado oil, refined coconut oil, vegetable oil, or even olive oil! I would recommend using a dutch oven or your favorite soup pot for this recipe (something with a lid)InstructionsTo a large pot over medium to high heat, add the oil, when the oil is hot add 2 or 3 kernels to test to see if its ready, then add the rest of the kernels and cover, leave a little crack to let some steam escape if needed. Another helpful tip when making popcorn over the stove, is to gently wiggle the pot while holding the lid and handles to jiggle the kernels around. Listen to the kernels, when it has mostly stopped popping, removed from the heat then add to a large bowl.In the meantime begin melting the butter on the stove or microwave in 15 second intervals. Add the seasonings to the butter along with the pickle juice, stir to combine, slowly incorporate over the popcorn and give it a light shake to distribute the pickley butter. Serve immediately! So let us talk about your cookbook and, like, use you somehow have not been on my radar. And then I, like, found your Instagram, and I was like, oh my gosh. This guy's from the Midwest. He has almost 500,000 followers. He's friends with Molly Yeh. I mean, how would how tell us about how you got started in the cookbook world because you must have been a food stylist. Your book is incredible.Hayden Haas [00:01:06]:Thank you so much. I appreciate that. Yes. I did have a little bit experience, with, food styling. I got my start on Food Network surprisingly as a dishwasher and sort of led me, on an unexpected path into the food world where I was then met with Molly and then, you know, the pandemic happened one thing or another. And then I was her personal assistant and then got to see all everything that's involved with that whole world. And Molly was such a joy and kinda taught me how to write my own recipes. And I'm so thankful for all the time that I did spend with her, learning behind the scenes.Hayden Haas [00:01:51]:The most important part was obviously the recipe development but also kind of, when I was working behind the scenes I kind of learned how to film and direct my own videos as well as, edit them at the same time too. So it was kind of just a full package deal. I still to this day don't even really realize that I'm doing so many people's jobs, and I'm so thankful that I had that opportunity.Stephanie Hansen [00:02:18]:Yeah. Your your book is well, it's beautifully shot, and you can tell, there's a lot of lifestyle to it and, yes, we're looking at recipes, but many times we're looking at, not completed recipes, like the ingredients of making it. There's a lot of color in the book. Whoever did the design, it has a real rainbow flare, which I think is really cute. Yes. I just loved it. I really got the book, and it feels really like, if I knew you, I feel like this is really a reflection of you.Hayden Haas [00:02:54]:Thank you so much. I that was something that was really important to me. I kind of think of this as, like, my debut album. And I it's so so special to me because one of my best friends actually took all of the photography for me, and there's so much, family and friends and everything tied into it. And my designer's name was Lindsey Dobbs from Penguin Random House. So I I really wanted to include a lot of color. That was something that was really important to me and kind of all seasons. Even though,You know, it is based mostly in the Midwest, and we have winter here maybe, like, 6 to 9 months of the year. So, trying to cover all of those bases and get pictures was probably the hardest part.Stephanie Hansen [00:03:42]:Yeah. And people I mean, just the shooting of a book and having the seasonality to it, it is hard. Like, I'm working on a book that's a sort of cozy winter cooking book, but we haven't had snow for over a year. So I'm trying to find snowy pictures.Hayden Haas [00:04:01]:Yes. Yes. You're also a published author, and I was just checking out your books as well.Stephanie Hansen [00:04:07]:I am a published author, but I think I'm in a different vein than you. Because while I do like developing recipes, my point of view is usually typically from, like, someone's inspired from a grandma or a friend or and then I kinda take it and make it my own. I am getting a little more confident in just being like, oh, I'm just gonna make this and kinda knowing how things come together.Hayden Haas [00:04:33]:Yeah. And that's, something that's super important in my cookbook too because that was inspired by all the important women in my life, like my mom and my grandmas and, you know, of course, like Molly, there's so many people who have contributed to me at this point that I couldn't not also include them and all these people who have motivated me and supported me, including all of my followers and stuff. Like, this wasn't originally my intended career path, but I am so thankful that it is.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:04]:What was your intended career path?Hayden Haas [00:05:06]:I went to school for architecture and drafting. I had dreams of becoming an architect, and then I decided that that wasn't really where my heart was, but it was a very good paying job.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:18]:And you live in North Dakota. Is that correct?Hayden Haas [00:05:21]:No. I actually recently just relocated to Minneapolis.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:25]:Oh, so you're probably like a neighbor somewhere.Hayden Haas [00:05:28]:Yeah. I'm freshly here for a couple of months, so I'm still kind of catching my bearings and, making my little space home, but Minneapolis has been so welcoming, and I have literally no complaints. It's a really great place to be.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:45]:Yeah. So now are you here for a short time? OrHayden Haas [00:05:49]:No. I'm here to stay until further notice.Stephanie Hansen [00:05:53]:Okay. So I need to I'm gonna connect with you, and we'll have a cup of coffee, and maybe I could help because do you need do you need this sounds so weird. Do you need friends?Hayden Haas [00:06:05]:I do need friends. Yes. Been so actively looking for friends. I need more foodie friends. You know, I'm kind of like I don't wanna say I'm a shut in, but since I work from home, I just cook all this food, and I get to share it with all my friends and neighbors. So it's just a great little opportunity and kind of like a howdy neighbor to Minneapolis.Stephanie Hansen [00:06:29]:Yeah. I love it. And same. So I'm always cooking tons of food. I'm also, like, because of the radio show, we go out a lot, but I'm always looking for people to eat with. I know that seems weird, but, like, not everyone loves to go out.Hayden Haas [00:06:46]:I'm also in that category. I also love having people over because, you know, you make a ton of cozy recipes. So it's like when you provide that environment of home and, just being able to host somebody in your home is just so wonderful, and that really fills my cup.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:04]:Yeah. Alright. Well, we've got a mission to get you introduced because we're getting into what I think could be the long winter months. I don't know. It's 80 degrees out, and it's practically Halloween, so it's very weird.Hayden Haas [00:07:17]:Wow. So strange how that's happening. I always knew Minneapolis was slightly warmer than where I'm from in North Dakota by at least 20 degrees. So I'm like, oh, if this is really what it's like, I'm all on board.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:29]:No. It's not at all. It's usually cold as hell. Alright. So I first found out about you from my friend Paul Folger from channel 5.Hayden Haas [00:07:41]:Oh.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:41]:And he was telling me about when you were on Twin Cities Live with him and Elizabeth and that you brought this pickle popcorn.Hayden Haas [00:07:52]:Yes.Stephanie Hansen [00:07:53]:Okay. And I'm obsessed with popcorn so much so that I really am not supposed to eat it because I used to eat so much of it. I had, like, stomach problems.Hayden Haas [00:08:03]:Oh, no.Stephanie Hansen [00:08:05]:But he brings me in this ziplock bag full of this pickle popcorn, and pickles are like, I'm obsessed with pickles, and I love popcorn. How did you think of the pickle popcorn recipe? Because it's a great recipe.Hayden Haas [00:08:19]:Thank you. I am in the same category as you as popcorn was literally my favorite snack when I was growing up. I just made a video talking about this slightly. Like, I was such a little weirdo with my popcorn. I mean, after school, we lived pretty close to a movie theater, so you could, like, pop in and grab some movie theater popcorn as a great little snack. So popcorn's always been one of my favorite things, along with pickles. So combining the 2 just kind of felt great. I love using pickle brine as an ingredient, and any opportunity to use fresh dill.Hayden Haas [00:08:55]:And we all know and love butter, so I kinda just fell hand in hand.Stephanie Hansen [00:09:00]:This is funny because I really am obsessed with dill too just because I grow it and it's like it volunteers in your garden where you don't want it, and then you're like, oh, I have dill, and you just have so much of it. You just end up using it all over.Hayden Haas [00:09:14]:And I think that's such a great problem to have too. I I don't know. It's either dill either because I'm also a little bit of a gardener myself. You can either grow it, and then it'll have, like, a bunch of abundance, or you're just done for it and you're not gonna have dill that year.Stephanie Hansen [00:09:28]:Yeah. I've had those years too. And then, like, the years you have it, you're like, wow. What I thought was so fascinating about the popcorn recipe was that you used the brine with the butter and it it didn't completely sog out the popcorn. Like, it did have kind of a, day after taste a little bit, but I love that about popcorn.Hayden Haas [00:09:50]:Me too. I, not to go back to movie theater popcorn, but I always loved it more the second day.Stephanie Hansen [00:09:58]:Yeah.Hayden Haas [00:09:58]:So when when you kind of combine those together and you coat them kind of gradually, it, you know, you don't want it to be, like, soggy from all of the butter and whatnot. So kind of figuring out how that works is, you know, you kind of figure it out the more often you make popcorn.Stephanie Hansen [00:10:14]:Well, Paul said that you were considering putting it in your next book.Hayden Haas [00:10:19]:Yes. I haven't announced that I'm doing the next book or anything like that, but I am so happy to share it. And so that is one of the next, recipes that I do plan on sharing. But it is already available to share on my blog, and I would happily make a video for everyone to follow along with.Stephanie Hansen [00:10:38]:Yeah. I really loved, he brought it in. I am not supposed to eat popcorn. I ate a handful. I loved it. And he was like, oh, no. You can just keep the bag. Like, you have desserts, you have cozy casseroles and hot dishes, you have drinks, which I also really enjoy. I have a lot of drinks in my book too. You've got a lot of soups. We're in the Midwest. Right? Soups are great. How did you decide? You have a lot of recipes in here too.Stephanie Hansen [00:11:22]:Like, they must have been cutting you off.Hayden Haas [00:11:24]:I we had kind of a tricky time deciding on we did originally have more recipes that we wanted to do, but we kind of decided on, you know, the photography that was really important to include and any, like, follow along steps. But there's over a 125 recipes. I tried to make it, kind of accessible, for everybody to be able to shop because I came from a really small town where, you know, some of the largest stores you had were probably like a Walmart or something along those lines, Target, Walmart. So you should be able to shop most of these ingredients from places like those wherever you are in the world. So I took a lot of thought into that. So you based on things that you have in your pantry and or fridge that are just like staples to always keep on hand. I it was really important to me to, share with the reader that you can make all these delicious things with things that you probably already have. A lot of my personal favorites, I'm a big breakfast and brunch kinda guy.Hayden Haas [00:12:28]:I also love, like, the meat and potatoes of things. I think that's kind of very Midwest. If you know my dad, he's, like, always more protein, always more protein. Just can't get enough of that meat. And soups are kind of like my favorite thing in the entire I think it should have its own food group because it's just the best, and I love just alwaysStephanie Hansen [00:12:52]:You and I are gonna be fast friends, dude. I can just tell.Hayden Haas [00:12:55]:No. We need to have you over for a fine bowl of soup. And then, of course, I'm not much of a sweet tooth, but I love making them for other people. And then same with, the adult beverages, there's mocktail options in there too. So I really wanted to cover all of the bases, things that I regularly enjoy or that were from my childhood and nostalgic, but slightly modernized and from foods of all kinds of cultures that I really wanted to share and also put my own little fusion or twist on.Stephanie Hansen [00:13:24]:You seem very excited about your food life. Do you ever feel, like, taxed by it? I mean, with so many followers, you gotta be spending a lot of time on social media. Does it ever feel like you're giving up too much or just like you're burned out?Hayden Haas [00:13:39]:I I that's a great question. Thank you so much for asking. I definitely experience burnout, on those days. I would say that I film maybe like 3 or 4 days of the week, and sometimes it can be 2 recipes, sometimes it can be 3. So it kind of just depends, weighing on my schedule and then other projects that I have going on, trying to make that all work. It's so much fun and stressful at the same time. I love it so much that it doesn't always feel like work, but that doesn't mean that I don't get emotionally or physically taxed from it. So sometimes where I'm like, today is not a filming day or, like, let's say I get, like, a zit or something like that.Hayden Haas [00:14:20]:You know? Because we all have everyday problems and stuff like that too. I, that's also really important where it's like, I don't, like, edit any of my videos where it's, like, lighting them different or even when I'm food styling, it's not like I'm doing anything crazy. So I want people to when they see a video or recipe of mine where it's like, how you see it is probably how it's gonna show up. That's, you know, how I intended it. And I tested that recipe 10 times or a 100 times. So it's like, I want you to have that result because I know the person at home, whether they're living on a budget or, you know, just trying to get more experience in the kitchen, that they have that confidence and they can pretty much jump into any recipe in the book that you know, it's anybody from any walk of life would be able to. So that was super important. And but sorry to get back to your original question, being taxed by the or tax or burnout.Hayden Haas [00:15:19]:I definitely experienced burnout, but those are the days where I'm like, it's more of a work on my computer type of day and Right. Let's order some takeout.Stephanie Hansen [00:15:28]:Yeah. I, when I looked at your book too, because I'm in the final like, I'm just in the final edits of my book. Yeah. That's due December 31st for my second one. We have a couple of, like, similar recipes. They're different, but they're similar. So it'll be fun to see when we when mine's out, we can kinda compare notes on some of the recipes.Hayden Haas [00:15:53]:I would love that. And that's something that I also value so much about the community and followers that I've built is a lot of these people do try the recipes, whether they post it or share it or whatever. People are making it for their families, and it's bringing so many people together, which is what makes me so happy. Or I love when somebody makes, like, a soup or a dessert recipe for, like, their friends and stuff because that's what I love to do. Yeah. It just feels full circle and it really makes my day.Stephanie Hansen [00:16:24]:So what is the first dish that you remember, like, making yourself? Can you remember? Did you cook as a kid?Hayden Haas [00:16:32]:There's so many things. My mom always had us in the kitchen. So we were always doing, like, baking and fun stuff like that. A recipe I guess this the one I can remember the most is not actually, like, an eating type recipe, but my mom and I used to make our own Play Doh.Stephanie Hansen [00:16:49]:Yes.Hayden Haas [00:16:50]:Yes. And, I mean, occasionally, I'm sure I you know, kids eat Play Doh, so I would taste it and be like, oh, that's salty. And so, like, not quite a recipe that's supposed to be edible, but that's the one that I think about and I wanna share all the time, but I don't have any kids to play Play Doh with.Stephanie Hansen [00:17:05]:That's funny. No. I think, yeah, we made that a lot as kids. And, also, I don't even know why we ever made this, but we used to make our own, like, homemade tootsie rolls.Hayden Haas [00:17:15]:Oh my gosh. I bet that was so special.Stephanie Hansen [00:17:17]:Yeah. And I don't know where we got the recipe or why we would make those, but I had sisters and so that's what we would do.Hayden Haas [00:17:24]:You have a mother's sweet little treat like that.Stephanie Hansen [00:17:26]:Yeah. Are you a freezer hoarder because you're cooking so much?Hayden Haas [00:17:30]:Oh, yeah. There's a lot of, disorganization that happens in but at the same time, I'm pretty good about, not having food waste. I kind of like auction things off to my neighbors and, you know, people that I meet that are kind of like within the vicinity where I'll say like, hey. For example, I just made, my breakfast pizza recipe and so I can kinda just auction it off to my friends who are all super busy and whatnot. And, oh, it's just great because I kinda get to feed my own little community and get their feedback at the same time where it's like, yeah. Don't add onions to this or that was too salty or something like that. So it's so helpful to get that here.Stephanie Hansen [00:18:12]:I'm creeping my neighbors out actually because I'm always like I just this morning, I did a TV segment. I had all these rice crispy bars. I didn't want them in the house because I'll eat them. So I just loaded up paper plates and kinda went door to door. And people are just like my neigh my next door neighbor, I know. She's just like because I this in this week alone, I've brought them a chicken pasta dish. I brought them apple muffins, and then I brought them rice crispy bars. And that's, like, within the last 3 days.Hayden Haas [00:18:46]:Yeah. I don't hear the problem in any of this. I think you're probably the favorite neighbor.Stephanie Hansen [00:18:51]:I hope.Hayden Haas [00:18:52]:I'm sure of it because I do the same thing. I was dropping off tiramisu, cheesecake, and some pizza and brownie. So we're in the same category. And if they don't want those leftovers, I'll take them.Stephanie Hansen [00:19:05]:That's so funny. Yeah. I need to I just I feel like, oh my gosh. These people probably think I'm so crazy because I'm always justHayden Haas [00:19:12]:Oh.Stephanie Hansen [00:19:13]:Walking door to door with piles of food. And I have a brand new neighbor that's literally right next to me that I haven't met yet. And they looked like they moved in over the weekend and then maybe were are doing some painting. So I left some of the muffins on their, like, door. And I my friend said, she goes, do you real do these people realize who you are and, like, what a gift it's gonna be living next to you? I'm like, I don't know.Hayden Haas [00:19:42]:No. I, 100% support all of that. Spread the love. I always say it's like, Nesquik, don't come for me, like, legally, but I always say share the wealth. And if your wealth is baked goods, share them. People are gonna love it. Exactly.Stephanie Hansen [00:19:55]:And thenHayden Haas [00:19:55]:it's not like you're gonna give them anything terrible or anything. Yeah. We only weigh our best creations. Right?Stephanie Hansen [00:20:01]:Yes. Exactly. So when you were at Food Network, you did you directly work on Molly's show or did you work on some other shows too?Hayden Haas [00:20:10]:I worked on Molly did a couple of things with HGTV, so that was fun to see what that was like. But I did, I started off as a dishwasher and then moved up to a food stylist. And then, at the same time, I was also Molly's assistant. And I've also had my own little touch of reality television because I was on Food Network's Chopped.Stephanie Hansen [00:20:35]:Oh, you were.Hayden Haas [00:20:37]:It was love.Stephanie Hansen [00:20:37]:Hear about that.Hayden Haas [00:20:39]:It was really fun. I did a blind date episode where yeah. It was so much fun. I was matched with somebody that I had never met before. And so you kinda go on a blind date. And then, you know, you get the basket with all of the mystery ingredients. And I think my ingredients were, like, like a cranberry kiss cocktail and, like, a red tail snapper and some heart shaped ravioli. And we I my partner and I, when we went into it, we initially kind of had, like, a situation where I was like, do you wanna take the lead, or do you want me to be sous chef or whatever? And he decided he wanted to be the lead, then I was like, I'll support you whatever you wanna do through the way.Hayden Haas [00:21:25]:So I was happy to do that. I wouldn't have, necessarily made the dish that we ended up making. Spoiler alert, I didn't end up winning, but it is still a really great episode, and I'm still friends with all the women on that show. SoStephanie Hansen [00:21:38]:So what did you end up making? Because I was listening to your ingredients and thinking, oh, well, the cranberry's gotta be a sauce.Hayden Haas [00:21:45]:Sure. If you're familiar with, like, kind of like a pate situation, it was kinda like that but with fish. So not not always a big winner. If I could have made what I wanted to, you since you have the cookbook right there, I won I would have made or leaned in towards my cranberry tortellini recipe.Stephanie Hansen [00:22:04]:Yeah.Hayden Haas [00:22:05]:And I think that would have, like, surprising people. But it also might have been, like, kinda boring because it's, like, pasta and Alfredo cranberry sauce or whatever. You know?Stephanie Hansen [00:22:15]:No. Alfredo sauce is never boring. I don't care. I feel like I eat noodles 62 times a week.Hayden Haas [00:22:22]:Yeah. I'm always a huge advocate of pasta myself.Stephanie Hansen [00:22:26]:Yeah. That's I'm gonna just go to that recipe right now, and we're gonna talk about it. Because, I love pasta. I eat pasta all the time. And I made spaghetti for a friend this weekend, and she came over and she goes, no offense, but can we just order takeout? I really hate noodles. What? I was like, who are you?Hayden Haas [00:22:48]:Interesting.Stephanie Hansen [00:22:49]:Yeah. I thought it was. Okay. So for cranberry sauce, let's see what we have in there. Here we are. Yep. Oh, I went on the wrong page.Hayden Haas [00:23:03]:Puerto Rican Alfredo sauce that we make from scratch, and then I do have my grandma's cranberry recipe. It it is like a I like I guess I like my cranberry sauce a touch sweeter, but, you know, you can make it as bitter as you want to.Stephanie Hansen [00:23:21]:Okay. This looks really good. It's got it's the sauce is kinda pink. It's got a sun dried tomato, mushrooms, artichoke hearts. Looks delicious.Hayden Haas [00:23:29]:Yeah. Big fan. When I was in college, there was this little restaurant, not not Olive Garden. But when when I was waiting when I was waiting tables in college, that was one of the more popular dishes from that restaurant.Stephanie Hansen [00:23:46]:Let's talk about all the, like, plates and the dishes in your book. Are these all things you own, or did you guys rent things?Hayden Haas [00:23:53]:No. I did not rent things. All of those were things that I do own because I am kind of a mix match person. So none of my plates match. None of my cups match. I, maybe a bit of a maximalist, if you will. So I love selection. I also kind of display them in my dining room.Hayden Haas [00:24:14]:So then whenever I have somebody over, I'm, like, grab any glass. So then that person kind of gets to pick whatever fun glass or fork or plate, whatever theyStephanie Hansen [00:24:23]:Phew. I love that idea.Hayden Haas [00:24:25]:So much fun. And then, you know, you always get really fun pictures at the same time.Stephanie Hansen [00:24:30]:Yeah. For sure. And I am feeling a little bit like and and I'm getting to the end of this book, so I'm feeling a little horny at this point. And, like, oh, I need to, like, maybe get rid of some of this stuff or repurpose it to the next house. Goodwill is my friend, but sometimes the things go back to the Goodwill too. Right?Hayden Haas [00:24:48]:Hey. You just don't have to tell me. I'm a avid thrifter myself, so I love, finding, like, a plate or 2 every time you visit or something where you're like, I have a vision for this particular plate, and it's gonna have some delicious pasta on it. And or here's this old pillowcase that I could sew into a napkin or something. So it's like, repurpose those things, make them beautiful, and share them with everyone.Stephanie Hansen [00:25:14]:Okay. I love that you would actually repurpose a pillowcase into a napkin.Hayden Haas [00:25:17]:Oh, and I've turned an old tablecloth into something els Shoot. It's all mix-and-match. I tell you, I love it. I have a whole cabinet ' whole cabinet just for my linens.Stephanie Hansen [00:25:29]:Can you think of something, like, where you got a real score at a thrift store? Like, do you have a favorite thing you thrifted?Hayden Haas [00:25:37]:Good question. I do, but I don't have, I really would love to provide, like, a image for you. But I since I am such an avid thrifter, I have a whole collection on my living room wall of mirrors. Cool. So it's kind of like you know how people have those, like, picture collages and stuff inStephanie Hansen [00:25:59]:the house?Hayden Haas [00:26:00]:It's kinda like that, but for mirrors. So it's like the whole and they're all different kinds. Like, some are new and nice. Like, I'm sure some are from, like, a Target or whatever. Sure. Got a cute one. But they're all different kinds and, some have little stands on them. I've my favorite one is, like, this vintage cover girl mirror.Hayden Haas [00:26:21]:Oh, it's so it's, like, tiny and cute. I everybody loves it when they come and check it out.Stephanie Hansen [00:26:26]:Oh, that's fun.Hayden Haas [00:26:27]:Yeah. And I don't know if a mirror is probably the greatest example because I really don't even look at myself in the mirror that much, but it's just such a fun little, addition to home and calling it cozy, and it's always a conversation starter when somebody walks in the door. And I Yeah.Stephanie Hansen [00:26:46]:It sure sounds like it.Hayden Haas [00:26:48]:Say that they wanna copy it. I'm like, it's all yours. Please enjoy.Stephanie Hansen [00:26:52]:So when you think about, a cookbook that you wish you had written, can you think of 1?Hayden Haas [00:27:02]:A cookbook I wish I would have written.Stephanie Hansen [00:27:04]:Yeah. Like, you just find it so inspiring.Hayden Haas [00:27:07]:I there's so many people that I'm inspired by. That's so tough. I would say somebody who I am always inspired by what is Molly Ye, of course.Stephanie Hansen [00:27:19]:Yeah.Hayden Haas [00:27:20]:I learned so much from my time with her. There's a couple of other people who are kind of influential. So going back a little bit when I was kind of burnt out in between architecture and whatnot, also very Minnesota of me, I went to go work for Target, like, part time, but then they ended up wanting me as a manager, which is great. I loved my time with them. In that time shift, that's when I started cooking for myself, and I really didn't have, like, social media before that. So it, like, started out fresh at, like, the age of 27 and started posting, like, food, blogs, pictures, like, kind of starting out, my own little food photography or food journey. And I started my mom had gifted me Chrissy Teigen's cookbook. And I was, so thankful for that, and I cooked my way through it.Hayden Haas [00:28:10]:And I started sharing some recipes, and she started commenting and liking on some of my things. And that inspired me to do more, which kinda led me on my way to meet Molly Ye. But there's so many other people like Anthony Bourdain and, you know, most of the people on Food Network. So that was, like, so funny that in my small little town that I was given, like, an opportunity for something I didn't think I would ever have.Stephanie Hansen [00:28:34]:Yeah. So And Chrissy Teigen's cravings book, I thought that that was a good cookbook. She's gotHayden Haas [00:28:41]:about 3 or 4 in her series. I've haven't done as much investigating into the newer books, but the first couple were so great and, like, everything, you know, you can pretty much make from home.Stephanie Hansen [00:28:55]:Yeah. Sarah Gienke ** 02:03 Thank you so much for having me, Michael, Michael Hingson ** 02:06 and I'd like to ask if you'd just tell us a little bit about kind of the early Sarah, growing up, and whatever you want to tell us, Sarah Gienke ** 02:12 sure. So I was born in Bay View, Milwaukee, and lived there for about five or six years, and then we moved to Muskego. Grew up there with my two older brothers, my mom and dad, we had a beautiful backyard with some woods and the pool. So it's very natural for me to be nature inclined. So I love all things being naturey. And of course, as you can imagine, potentially growing up with two brothers, kind of a little bit of a tomboy, so wasn't afraid. Michael Hingson ** 02:45 And then, of course, washed out for sister. Yeah, exactly, exactly. Sarah Gienke ** 02:51 And so yeah, wasn't afraid to pick up frogs or search for salamanders. And, you know, just enjoy nature before screens were invented. Geez. You know, I identify as a zillennial. So I'm a, I'm a late millennial, very early Gen Z, kind of in this, like overlap area of a couple years. And so I wasn't born with screens. You know, in my hand, we obviously had TVs and would watch VHS, and then we moved to CDs and learned how to write cursive and and also type at the same time. And I think that is a key component into my identity, because I grew up with technology, very comfortable with it, but also I feel like I'm straddling both sides, kind of that old world and the new New World, which I don't think we're going back so got a very unique perspective. Michael Hingson ** 03:50 I hear that more people are learning cursive again than did for quite a while. Sarah Gienke ** 04:00 I have heard that. And I've also heard quite the opposite, that some schools are completely eliminating it. Yeah, I've heard that too. Yeah, it's kind of a, it's kind of a wild, wild scene right now, when it comes, yeah, Michael Hingson ** 04:15 it is, I think that there's, there's value in learning how to read and write, and people should learn to do that. And I don't know whether it's totally equivalent. In some ways it is, but there's a big argument that for blind people, well, you don't need Braille anymore because you can read books by listening to them, and you you don't need Braille because there's so much available and audio and an unlimited vocabulary, text to speech on your computer. The only problem with all of that is, if you buy into that, you don't learn to read to spell, you don't learn good grammar and sentence structure. And I would think that to a degree, there is some truth to. Fact that cursive is different than just typing on a keyboard. You're learning a little bit more about your main way of communicating, which is with characters, whether they're printed or written or typed. It's value to have all of that. Oh, absolutely. Sarah Gienke ** 05:15 I honestly have never heard anyone say that we don't need Braille. I would, I don't think I would ever say that. I think people learn different styles. So why would we eliminate that? You know, like that doesn't make sense, because, Michael Hingson ** 05:29 unfortunately, a lot of the so called experts in the field say, Well, you got all these other means you don't need braille, and that's why Braille is only right now covering about 10% of all blind people, and it used to be over 50% literacy rate. It has dropped a significant amount. It may be coming back up a bit, but they're really mistaken, if they sell us short, and the value of learning Braille is the same as for the value of learning print and you being able to read, there are just things that you're not going to get from audio books or anything else that you will get from truly being able to read, which is what Braille permits. Sarah Gienke ** 06:10 Yeah, and also, like the use of your imagination, right? When we read, especially non fiction, we're imagining this whole narrative and story going on in our brain. So I feel like that's a huge aspect that people would miss out on as well Michael Hingson ** 06:24 they would, and you can get some of it from audio, but it isn't the same. You're still a little bit more limited, because you are somewhat drawn in by the reader, the narrator, as opposed to truly looking at it yourself. I spent a weekend very recently in Seattle with the radio enthusiasts of Puget Sound, which is an organization that that does a lot to preserve old time radio. And what we did was we created 18 radio shows, so I was one of the actors in some of the shows, and had a lot of really neat discussions about the concept of radio and what radio was in the 40s and 30s and 50s, until TV came along and really invaded people's imaginations, because now you really didn't get To imagine it. It's what the director and the casting people decided Matt Dillon should look like as a marshal, as opposed to what you heard when you heard William Conrad, who was the radio voice of Matt Dillon, and it was a totally different kind of image that came about. And that's true with a lot of radio versus television that you you don't get the same thing from television, because now it's what you see on the screen rather than what you imagine in your mind. So, yeah, it's interesting. That's super Sarah Gienke ** 07:54 interesting. I did not know that you had a radio background. I That's fascinating. I mean, it makes sense. You've got such a great voice, so might as well use it Michael Hingson ** 08:04 well. I did radio in college too, so it was a lot of fun to to do that, and didn't do a lot with it, other than using it to communicate when I did sales and other things like that after college. But it's a lot of fun and and you So you grew up chasing frogs and salamanders and all that, and did, where did you go to college? Or did you do that? Sarah Gienke ** 08:25 Yeah, of course, I did. Well, I shouldn't say of course, because not everyone goes to college, but I did. And I actually went to UW Waukesha. So I went there, I got my associate's degree and all my gen Ed's done, partially because I wasn't ready to leave yet and be on my own, but also financially, I just didn't know going and it just made more sense. And very grateful for that experience, because it led me actually out to Madison, Wisconsin, which is where I am now. I've been out here for nine years or so, and I finished my bachelor's degree at Edgewood, Edgewood College, and that was a liberal arts degree, a liberal arts school of the Dominican branch. Not that that really matters, but it's, you know, a differentiator, I guess, for some. And I studied interpersonal, organizational communications, which really means being able to connect with people and build really great relationships when it comes to organizations Michael Hingson ** 09:28 Cool, well, and what did you do with that? Then, when you, when you got out of college, well, Sarah Gienke ** 09:34 I, let's see, I kind of got into the tech world. I just started going to a lot of different networking events and things, and found someone who was running a startup, and they were like, Hey, come join our team. And so I had a short stint at that organization, and then moved, and I was doing sales there, and then I moved to curate, which is another gov Tech. Company, and did sales for them for quite some time, and had another brief role at a L and D firm, kind of getting into the culture realm. And then when I was there, I really decided I wanted to pursue my certification for Tre. And I was like, You know what? I really like this, and I'm going to finish my certification and then launched my company. So here I am fully stepped into my own business and also doing some other side contracting work in the HR realm. Michael Hingson ** 10:30 So and how do you like being an entrepreneur? Oh, Sarah Gienke ** 10:33 gosh, you know, I feel like I've always been of entrepreneurial spirit. You know, the the term being an intra intrapreneur, and it's hard. It is not for everyone, and still, still kind of fitting into my britches, if you will, figuring out how do you maneuver being an entrepreneur. But I ultimately love it for the flexibility being able to represent myself and to pick and choose the kinds of things that I want to work on Michael Hingson ** 11:05 well, and I think that's that's valuable and important, that you can really decide what exactly you want to do. The other thing about being an entrepreneur that I find fascinating, and I think it's one of the reasons a lot of people don't necessarily succeed at it as well as they could, is you've got to really be disciplined, especially when you're the one that is the captain of the ship. You've got to learn what a captain has to do, and you may find innovative ways to bury that, but there are still processes and procedures that you have to do as the entrepreneur in charge, if you will, and that that is something that not everyone is able to do. The whole discipline concept, yeah, Sarah Gienke ** 11:51 for sure, it's something I'm still settling into and re redefining every day or every week, figuring out where to put my time and my energy, and how do I balance it all? And yeah, so it's definitely, definitely a change, Michael Hingson ** 12:06 and that's okay. It's something that you'll always be doing, and it's good that you question it, and it's good that you look at it, and maybe every day, at the end of the day, kind of think, how did this go? How did that go? Was this as good as it could be? And so you will always, if you're doing it right, be looking at how you can improve the process. Or you decide this worked out really well, I'm going to stick with it and look for ways to improve it as we go forward, whatever it is, yes, Sarah Gienke ** 12:33 exactly, exactly. And creating that path, seeing the need, and then creating something to fill that need that's there, I think is really exciting. And collaboration with others as well who are doing the work that's been something I've been recently exploring quite a bit. Michael Hingson ** 12:51 Well, tell me a little bit more about what you do. And you said you wanted to do a grounding session, and we should do that, whatever that is all involved. So I'm going to leave that all up to you. Sarah Gienke ** 13:00 Okay, well, um, you know, maybe we'll, we can. We'll put all Michael Hingson ** 13:04 the responsibility on you. Sarah Gienke ** 13:08 I'm used to it. Um, so actually, let's continue with the conversation, and sure you can close out with a grounding. I think that would be good. Well, Michael Hingson ** 13:17 tell so tell me about tre you mentioned that, and I know it's a registered item, but tell me about Tre. What does tre stand for, and and what is it? Sarah Gienke ** 13:30 Yeah, so tre stands for attention and trauma releasing exercises. It's essentially, very much akin to yoga. And what did? It consists of a series of intro exercises, which lightly stretch and then fatigue muscles so that we can then tap into this innate shaking modality. Its technical name is called neurogenic tremoring, which all mammals can do. If you have a dog at home, which my God, all if you do, I have a Michael Hingson ** 14:01 guide dog who's over here, very comfy on his bed. Sarah Gienke ** 14:05 There you go. Well, he must be very relaxed. He is. I assume you've probably seen him scared, right? Yeah. Like, what does he get scared at? Like, what are some of his triggers? Michael Hingson ** 14:20 Well, he has a couple things. The most recent thing, he's not generally afraid of thunder and lightning and so on. But last week, we had one cloud storm cell come through that dumped a bunch of rain for about a half hour. But more important, there was an incredible amount of thunder and lightning, and I didn't really hear the thunder and lightning, so I opened the door. It was about 730 night to let him out, and he just backed up from the door and was panting very heavily and just would not go out. And I'm not going to force him, because I then heard all the thunder, and I went, Oh, I cannot. Understand that, but still that bothered him. Another thing that bothers him is we do have some smoke detectors in the house, and I'm don't know whether you have a smoke detector, but when the battery starts to run out, they chirp at you, and he doesn't and he doesn't like that either. Sarah Gienke ** 15:14 Okay, okay, well, I don't know if at either of those stimulus or stimuli, if that makes him shake. But a lot of dogs do shake at lightning or thunder the Veiled person, and so that is the dog's natural way of discharging the stress from that trigger, right? But what has happened in humans is we have learned to suppress it. We've conditioned ourselves not to shake because we label it at it as weak or weird or vulnerable. You know, for example, when you see someone talking up on stage or even doing a podcast and they get nervous, what do we think about them? What do we label them? Michael Hingson ** 16:00 Yeah, I hear you. We we say, well, what's wrong with you? Exactly? Sarah Gienke ** 16:03 And so it's actually nothing that's wrong with them, no natural way of trying to rid themselves of the rush of the chemicals of adrenaline and cortisol that go through the body when we have that physiological reaction. And so what tre does is helps us come out of those states. It helps us get back to a state of safety and groundedness, which I hope to get into in a little bit perhaps now Michael Hingson ** 16:33 we'll see. If you'd like to I will comment coincidentally, at the beginning of the pandemic, I realized, and it's been a while since we've chatted, but you may remember, I worked in the World Trade Center on September 11 and escaped with a previous guide dog who was afraid of thunder and lightning, but nothing bothered her on September 11, because it wasn't thunder and lightning, and in the building, when the plane hit 18 floors above us. It wasn't a very loud explosion, anyway. But the point of saying that is that I had spent a lot of time learning what to do in an emergency situation at the World Trade Center, and just learning all about the complex reason being, I ran an office for a company, and so it was important for me to know what to do in the case of an emergency or any any, any unexpected situation, because I might very well either be the only one in our office or there might be other people. But they rely on as sighted people looking at signs and so on, which may or may not even be available to you in an emergency situation. So it's important to really know what to do, rather than figuring, oh, I can just use the signs. And so I learned all of that, and what I discovered about me later, well, after September 11, is that, because I learned all of that, I had developed a mindset that says, You know what to do in an emergency. And so when there was one, I immediately had this mindset kick in, and other things started to happen where I observed what was going on around me. For example, someone in my office was yelling, we got to get out of here. The building's on fire. I could see fire and smoke, and there are millions of pieces of burning paper falling outside our window, and I could hear debris falling outside our window. So I believed him when he said there were burning pieces of paper falling outside the window. But I was also observing something else, namely, a dog sitting next to me, wagging her tail, yawning, going, who woke me up? I was sleeping real good here, and you guys are disturbing my rest. What's going on? And what that told me, because I was focused and had learned to focus, what that told me was, whatever's going on isn't such an immediate emergency that we can't try to evacuate in an orderly way. Didn't mean we shouldn't evacuate, but we could evacuate in an orderly way. Another way of saying, not to say, I'm not afraid, but rather to say, you can control fear. You can learn how to deal with the fear that you have and use it as a very powerful, supportive, positive tool, rather than, as I put it, blinding you or overwhelming you. Sarah Gienke ** 19:32 Wow. What an example. I knew, of course, that you had been in the the Twin Towers when 911 happened. But yeah, you had not shared that tidbit with me before. That's that is an incredibly powerful story and skill to have, and thank goodness for your calm and collectiveness like amidst you know, one of the worst. First disasters our nation has ever faced, you made calm and you helped people get down the stairwell like that is, wow. Michael Hingson ** 20:09 Well, and now we've written a book about it. And then the book is entitled, it'll be published in August. It's from Tyndale house, and the book is entitled, live like a guide dog. True Stories from a blind man and his dogs about being brave, overcoming adversity and moving forward in faith. And the idea is that I really learned a lot of those skills by observing and working with eight guide dogs and then also my wife's service dog when they were both alive. Fantasia. But the the idea is that dogs, for example, have a lot to teach us about teamwork, being brave and being supportive, and the very fact that we can be a lot more able to deal with fear if we are in a teaming environment and support and allow ourselves to be supported by teammates. Sarah Gienke ** 21:03 Yeah, I love that. It's the that collective, collective mentality, instead of the individualistic one we sell off choose, Michael Hingson ** 21:13 yeah, so same way. It's coming out in in August. It's available for pre order, and I'm looking forward to seeing how well it's received. I hope it's received well, and that lots of people will be interested in it, because I think we need to recognize that fear doesn't need to blind us, or fear doesn't need to overwhelm us. We can deal with it like with anything in our lives, if we choose to, but that's a matter of choice, and learning how to be able to make that choice work. Sarah Gienke ** 21:47 Yeah, and well, you can count me in for a copy, because I definitely, I definitely want to read your book. But what I think you're really talking about here, Michael, is resilience. You know, making that choice to not get overwhelmed, which can easily happen, and is totally okay if it happens, but the harm of it is when we are stuck in that heightened state for long periods of time, that's when we're going to experience some adverse effects or or when we experience it over and over and over and over again, what we call a theory our window of tolerance, that's going to keep getting shorter and shorter so you're going to get more triggered and triggered and not be able to move through that situation. So the work with tre is helping you increase that window of tolerance so that you can withstand more adversity without getting as triggered or triggered at all, and really remaining in control over your emotions, Michael Hingson ** 23:09 which makes perfect sense, and it's kind of what we've been talking about. And the fact is, you can do that. What's the difference between stress and trauma? You make a distinction between the two, yeah, and talk about how they can both be stuck in our bodies and so on which, which is, of course, getting back again to what you're talking about with tre but yeah, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. Sarah Gienke ** 23:29 So I think of stress and trauma as kind of a continuum. On one side we have stress, and on the other side we have trauma, and as things increase in intensity, or over time, we're going to experience trauma. But to kind of give the listeners here a very concrete explanation, I actually, I actually Googled this, and this is what chat generative AI came up with, with which I thought was really interesting. Stress is a natural human response to the mental or physical tension caused by a difficult situation. It can be a one time occurrence or happen repeatedly over a period of time. Stress, though, this is the key differentiator, is that it can be positive or negative. It can motivate you to achieve those goals and get out of your bed and light a fire under your butt in the morning, or it can cause you to lose sleep. That what we would call the eustress, which is good stress, versus distress, which is bad stress. And we really want to teeter right in the middle there, where we're not dipping too far into one way or the other, because if we don't have enough stress, we're going to just kind of lay around and not do much. But if we have too much, we're going to go completely overwhelmed and most likely shut down on on the other side of the spectrum. So trauma is defined as a distressing or disturbing event that increases our lack of personal. Control. So, like we were talking about before losing control over emotions, it can and most, most definitely leaves an impression on us, kind of like if you were to put your hand into some Play Doh and then take your hand back, that impression is still there. And so it can be, really any experience that overwhelms one's normal coping mechanisms, and it leaves the person feeling helpless. And one key differentiator for me is when someone is talking and they talk about their life as like a pre or a post, that's a huge different. That's a huge key indicator that they've experienced some trauma, which obviously, with you going through 911 that's a huge trauma that you've experienced. And I don't know if you want to get into that on this call, but I would personally be curious to learn, like, what was that experience like, and what did you do to heal yourself? Michael Hingson ** 25:59 What's really funny about your question is my answer. Ironically. You know, we always hear about the media and how obnoxious they could be and all that, but soon after September 11, the media heard about my story, and I started getting phone calls and asked to be interviewed and so on, and I talked with my wife about it, and she was probably a little bit more skeptical than I, but I'm the guy who was professionally selling in the family, so I thought I could deal with it. We agreed that if it would help people move on from September 11 at the time, if it would help people learn more about blindness and guide dogs, and if it would help people maybe understand that they could deal with these kinds of things, and I would allow the interviews to happen. The other part about that was that it also then led to people beginning to call me and asking me to come and talk about September 11, and not only that, but to talk about other topics that I have expertise in, and I still do that today. So I'm always looking for speaking opportunities. So anybody out there who is listening, who needs a speaker, love to chat with you. But for me, like with anyone, I think when you have something happen to you, or you're facing some situation, there's always value in talking about it. And for me, getting so many interviews, literally hundreds, with the most intelligent questions to the most asinine, inane questions that you can imagine, and having to answer all of them without getting upset, that was probably the thing that helped me the most, because I allowed myself, and I put myself in a position to talk about it, Sarah Gienke ** 27:50 yeah, like externally, externally processing it, yeah. That makes total sense. Michael Hingson ** 27:55 Yeah. Because I think anyone who is in a in any kind of a situation, or even if you're looking for a solution to a problem, there's a lot of value in collaboration and not taking the position well, only I can solve this, nobody else can. You don't know that. But more important collaboration, teamwork, trust or just talking it out never hurts. Sarah Gienke ** 28:25 Yeah, that's so true, and that's what I mentioned earlier, is collaborating with others, right? Seeing it in perspective, I I kind of want to, like, bring your question and something that you just said now together. So okay, you were asked earlier, like, how does trauma get or stress get stuck and stored in our body? Well, when we don't process it, it stays within us. So we have something called the stress response cycle, where, if you think of a circle at the top, we're calm, or what we call homeostasis, maybe you're in like the state, the formal state called ventral vagal, which is ease and calm, and you're experiencing joy. And then if you move to, you know, one side of the circle, you're going to encounter the trigger, or that external stimulus that's got you kind of little bit riled up. And then you continue along the circle to the bottom, where then you're going to experience one of the the stress or trauma responses. We've got fight, flight, freeze or fun. And then if you continue to close the loop, we would move back to calm, you know, letting the body settle down. But as I had alluded to earlier, lots of us get stuck in that response state. So I'd be curious, did you feel any like physical ailments or anything kind of develop as a result of your experience in 911 or with 911 Michael Hingson ** 29:53 No, actually, I did not. The only thing that happened to me, really was walking down. And basically mathematically, we calculated roughly 1400 63 stairs at least going down the next day. I was as stiff as a board, and was really stiff for a week. So I was glad that we had built an accessible home for my wife, because she was always using a wheelchair. She was born with scar tissue on her spinal cord. So she was paralyzed from like right below the breasts on down so she could drive and so on. But she used a chair, and so we put an elevator in the home, because it had to be where we were building. Had to be a two story home. I used that elevator for a week, a lot more than she did. So because I couldn't go up, I couldn't walk upstairs or downstairs, and my office was in our basement. My home office was in our basement. So that that was a, I think it was that the adrenaline wore off, and the next day, as I said, I was stiff. And was stiff for about a week. She said, you walk like an old man. So, Sarah Gienke ** 30:57 geez, I could only imagine. I mean, yes, obviously, like the physical exercise of going down that many stairs like, you know, after a gym session, gym session, even, you know, we're a little little tight or or sore the next day or two, but, but what I'm almost, I'm speculating here is that could have have happened to you, or, you know, many others, is when you experience that we tense up like our entire body, and so that is actually what inhibits us from being able to tremor, to release it. So, you know, there's like this unthawing process that happens with clients and people that explore this modality so that we can actually get to the place where we experience the tremoring. That's why we stretch and do these light exercises, so you can tap into it. Otherwise, we're just going to tighten up and forget about it. Well, the Michael Hingson ** 31:54 other thing is, and people have asked me, Did you feel survivor's guilt or anything like that, a remorse? And the answer is, I have to say no. And the reason I didn't was because I realized pretty early on that, like with the media starting to be interested, and people started to call and saying, Would you come and speak? And then we made the decision for me that speaking was a whole lot more fun, and selling life and philosophy was a whole lot more rewarding than selling computer hardware. And so I chose to do that starting at the beginning of 2002 although I did a speech or two before even then. But the bottom line is that I realized that there's something that I should do with my life because of what happened. And I think it's important that in anything that we do, in any situation that we face, the reality is that we may not have had control over that situation happening. And I'm not convinced today that we could have predicted September 11, I'm not sure that there was enough data ever produced that would have allowed us to figure it out. I don't know, but that's my thought. But we always have control over how we deal with what happens to us, and that's the issue, Sarah Gienke ** 33:16 yeah, well, I gotta say I think you're one heck of a resilient guy. I mean, I don't know, I haven't interacted with a lot of 911 survivors, but I will say, and I will bet, that a lot of them probably are not as resilient as you, as you are, and maybe it is due to your blindness and having having to be resilient already that you were just, you know, more capable to handle that experience. I don't know, but, yeah, it's sure an inspiration. That's for sure. Well, I Michael Hingson ** 33:52 hope that that it helps people. And one of the reasons that we wrote live like a guide dog that'll be coming out is hopefully even during this election year, people will read it and take a step back and think about what's going on and not let those who want to promote fear blind us to making more intelligent decisions, whatever that happens to be. We don't take enough time at the end of the day, or at the beginning of the day to analyze our own lives, and I'll take at the end of the day. We don't take enough time to just even while we're lying down getting ready to fall asleep, going How did it go today? What worked? What didn't work? Why did I react this way to this or that, could I have done it differently? And self analysis is something that can help lead to learning a lot more about controlling the fear reactions of the other things that we face and how we deal with them. Sarah Gienke ** 34:58 Yeah, absolutely. Self awareness. Progress. And through self awareness, we explore things to help us self regulate meaning, regulating over our emotions and how we're reacting to things, and then ultimately getting to a place of self agency, you know, having that discipline and and regaining that back, which often gets lost when we experience hardships. Yeah, Michael Hingson ** 35:25 what can people do to relieve stress? What are the kinds of things that the body needs? Really? I think we've talked about that a little bit, but yeah, Sarah Gienke ** 35:32 there are so many different ways to relieve stress for your body, or AKA, self regulate your nervous system. Some of my favorite things to do, even since being a little girl, is being in nature. I just feel so connected to the earth when I step outside. And whether that's going for a stroll locally here or going up north and being surrounded in the in the woods, people can dance. Dancing is a huge way to release stress from the body and also have a creative outlet to express what you might be experiencing. Others might rely on adjacent techniques to tre such as like tapping or the EFT Emotional Freedom Technique where people tap in different areas to release. I am excited to explore that more myself. I haven't quite yet. Michael Hingson ** 36:29 We did a podcast on that a few weeks ago. Oh, Sarah Gienke ** 36:32 well, then perfect. I'll have to give a lesson. And so, yeah, like I said, there's a there's so many different ways to regulate yourself and to kind of continue on that list, breath work, also singing. I think people don't know this, but singing or humming is an excellent way to stimulate what we call the vagus nerve. So that's a bundle of nerves in our nervous system that really controls a lot of things. And so when we hum or we sing, that vibration touches on that bundle of nerves and brings us down into states of groundedness, connection, etc. So I don't know if you've ever been in choir, but I'm also a huge, huge choir fan or choir nerd, and so I always wondered, how did I get through school? School is extremely stressful, whether it's high school or college, and I was singing. I was singing for like, almost two hours every day, and so I think that was a huge way for me to come back down and to also feel connected to others. So yeah, Michael Hingson ** 37:35 yeah. Well, I like, I like to sing, and I've always enjoyed karaoke, no less. But by the same token, just singing for myself, whether anyone else is around or not, it is a good way, and we do need to do things to take our minds off of the things that we think are stressful, which may or may not really be stressful at all. I think it was Mark Twain who said, or one of the people who said, The problem with most of the things that we're afraid of is they're never going to come through and come true anyway. Yeah, Sarah Gienke ** 38:08 well, that sounds like that's a nervous system that's heightened, that's in hypervigilant state, looking for all the possible outcomes and mostly negative things, if we're being transparent of how things could turn out, which is just such an icky way to live, and I know exactly what that's like. Michael Hingson ** 38:28 Well, one of the lessons that we talk about and live like a guide dog comes from Roselle, who was the guide dog who was with me in the World Trade Center, and after September 11, like a day or two later, I called the veterinarian department at guide dogs, and I said, is any of this? Because they, by that time, had learned that I was in the complex we let them know. But I asked, How will all this affect Rozelle? And the response was, did anything threaten or hurt her specifically, like did a brick come at her and hit her or anything like that? And I said, No, absolutely not. They said, well, then nothing. When we got home that night, I took her harness off and I was going to take her outside, but she would have none of it. She went to her toy box, got her favorite tug bone, and started playing tug of war with our retired guy dog, Lenny, and the two of them just played for a while. Roselle didn't even need to go outside. But the point was, it was over for her, and what the veterinarian said was, it's over. Dogs don't do what if? When something like that happens, they may react if something directly affects them, but it still is, they don't do, what if it's a particular situation. But in rose L's case, there was nothing. So dogs don't do what if, and we spend so much time, what if, in. That it drives us crazy. Sarah Gienke ** 40:03 It really does. I feel called out here, but it's true, and I think that's that's really has to do with their prefrontal cortex. So like the front of their of their brain, humans have different prefrontal cortexes we've evolved to have it be much more complex. And so yeah, dogs kind of, they're just in the present moment. They're like, alright, yeah, like you said, it's over, and now I'm here playing with my with my bestie, yeah, yeah, you Michael Hingson ** 40:38 you sound like though you've experienced some of these things that have been, what if creators and so on. Oh, Sarah Gienke ** 40:44 totally. I mean, I think that's part of the human experience. And through, through nervous system regulation and through techniques like meditation and mindfulness, we can really rewire our brains and our bodies to not live in that fear state, to live in a live and work from a place of groundedness, centeredness, openness, curiosity, and I think ultimately, when you're in that type of energy, you're attracting, you're attracting things to You, instead of being more negative and being fearful and like pushing things away, yeah, Michael Hingson ** 41:24 what kinds of things would you suggest to recommend to help regulate our nervous system and deal with some of these issues that we are talking about? Sarah Gienke ** 41:34 Yeah, so as I had mentioned before, you know, getting out in nature and walking, um, exercise can be good for for that meditation, breath work, tapping and then, you know, obviously, I'm a huge advocate for Tre. I think tre gets to the root of things quite quickly, and it has a tremendous impact, not just from your first time on, but compounding. Just like any kind of self care ritual that we would do, when we do it over time and continuously, we're going to see exponential growth, especially if we layer it with other things. So if you're going to therapy or things like that, and you're layering it with tre or breath work or tapping, I think that there's a magic combination for all of us that we have to kind of explore and discover the different things that work for our bodies. Because I tell you, I say to people, you know, tremoring, everyone can tremor but tremoring is not for everyone. And what I mean by that is not everyone's ready to do this deeper work, you have to be ready to meet yourself at those deeper levels. So if you're just kind of getting on that healing journey or self regulation nervous system journey, I'd say start with something a little lighter, like try, try mindfulness techniques or meditation, something like that. Dip your big toe in. Don't you jump right into the bath right away. Michael Hingson ** 43:03 Yeah, there's no need to do that. But you know, what do you say to the person who says, Oh, I don't have time to do any of that. I'm too busy. I've got too much stuff to do. I've got to get these projects done, and so on and so on and so on. Yeah, Sarah Gienke ** 43:19 gosh, I get it, because I even struggle with that, with my own self sometimes, you know, we're human. We've got a lot on our plates, and I think it's a couple things. One, it's knowing that in order to go fast, we kind of need to slow down. It's just like when we were in college and you pulled an all, all nighter to study for your exam, and then you show up to the exam and you're exhausted and you don't remember anything, versus, you know, at midnight or whenever you went to bed, just closing the book and saying, You know what, I did the best that I could, and I'm going to go to sleep, and you're going to wake up much more refreshed. And so that same kind of concept applies to this work, is knowing that we need to slow down so that we can show up and be fully our best selves, for ourselves, for our partner partners, for our our kids, our employees, our workplace. So it's, it's that, and then also on the flip side is, if you just keep going and going, you're gonna, you're gonna hit a wall at some point and potentially reach burnout. So the analogy that I like to give that's very common in this world is that our nervous systems are like a car, and so what we're trying to do is find the optimal speed for ourselves, for our bodies. So what kind of pace Are we moving at internally? And so our sympathetic nervous system, which is one side, is the gas pedal. And if we're on that gas pedal, you know, pedal to the metal all the way, we're going to run out of gas. That car is going to start to run. Down, and eventually you're going to be on the side of the road asking for help. So basically, it's really about prevent, preventing that and and bringing in some of the other side, which is the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the rest and digest. That's the the brake pedal. We don't want to be fully on break, because then we'll just be going nowhere. But we want to, we want to find that optimal range where it feels really good. Michael Hingson ** 45:28 And the reality is, each of us have our own gifts, and the gifts that you have are not necessarily the gifts that I have, which are not necessarily the same as someone else has, and no one should be criticized for the gifts that they have or don't have. Sarah Gienke ** 45:48 Absolutely, absolutely, Michael Hingson ** 45:52 yeah, and it happens too often. Sarah Gienke ** 45:54 It does, and also knowing that no one's perfect and that if that's a skill you want to work on, great, you've acknowledged that, and now you can take a step forward to work on the skill that you want to work on. In this example, it's regulating your nervous system. Michael Hingson ** 46:16 What is CO regulation? And why is that an important concept? Sarah Gienke ** 46:19 Oh, that's a great question. So when we are babies and we fall down and we scrape our knee, and our parents pick us up and they coddle us, and they soothe us from crying and screaming out in pain, they are co regulating with us. They are helping us calm down, get back to that centered state Petrova once again. And so we keep doing that over and over and over again. And through that, we learn to be able to self regulate on our own. And that's the work that that I do with clients, is helping them through co regulation with me learn how to get to self regulation. Because, unfortunately, even though that's how we're supposed to learn self regulation through our parents, a lot of us have not learned that, and that's, I think, just partially a generational thing. I think there's a whole change and shift, as I was mentioning earlier with Gen Z prior to pressing record, that is really taking accountability for how we're showing up and how we're interacting and so a huge part of that is that self regulation. So both are essential to create safety, especially in groups, in communities, in workplaces. You know, for example, our, you know, our nervous systems are, always, are, always are tuning to one another, like when a boss comes into a meeting and they're all fostered and uptight and just huffing and puffing. You can feel that that is tangible energy, and they are not in a regulated state. And so when our nervous systems can kind of talk to one another and one's remaining, remaining grounded, not also getting heightened, then we can calm, we can help calm each other down. So it's kind of like this concept of taking care of one another in a community context. Michael Hingson ** 48:22 You know, one of the things I hear a lot, and I think I've said it myself, is that today, we seem to have so many more people who have no boundaries, and they just think they they own the road or whatever the case happens to be. I don't know whether that is really true, but it seems like it is all too often today, more the case that things that we would never have thought of doing and would never do years ago, people do all the time. Now. Do you think that's really true, that people have less boundaries, or they haven't learned how to regulate or look at different points of view. Is that a gender or not gender, but a generation issue or anything like that? 49:10 Well, that's Michael Hingson ** 49:11 is that a very open question? Yeah, Sarah Gienke ** 49:13 yeah. It's a very nuanced question, because, like anytime we talk about a population of people, we don't want to just generalize because one fits into that box. You know, there may be some overlapping or overarching, I should say, characteristics or similarities that you find, but, yeah, we want to be careful when we're talking about groups in general. So I I would actually say that people are getting more boundaries. I think that there's some generations before us that necessarily didn't have boundaries. It was self impression too, that was taught. You know, boundaries were more porous. But. Younger generation as much as they want to, as much as they are seen, sometimes as challenging or X, Y and Z. I think they're really resetting, not to plug the name of my business, but they're resetting the threshold in which how we show up in the world, what our boundaries are, regulating our emotions, being able to then have an important conversation with people, um, instead of just avoiding or brushing it under the rug. So that's kind of my take on it. What do you what do you see? That's Michael Hingson ** 50:34 my impression, too, and that's what I've actually heard from from people that younger people maybe have really started to realize and are catching on to having boundaries, having values, being a little bit more methodical about what they do and that they're and that older people and people will classify me as that arena, since I'm 74 probably had boundaries. But there's that middle ground, or that middle set of people that that didn't really and haven't really dealt with boundaries, maybe as appropriately as they should, and how that will affect things other than the younger generation is catching on and seeing it and doesn't like it, but, but I agree with Sarah Gienke ** 51:24 you, yeah, and I think we could substitute the word boundaries and for trauma, because ultimately, what it really comes down to is that self inner work, because what's happened prior is Just passing on trauma through behaviors, but also genetically. And so it finally has come to a point in the time where we're like, No, we're not going to continue these behaviors. We're not going to continue to pass this on. We're going to face it and we're going to process it through the work that I do with clients or and other other modalities that I mentioned, so that we can then ultimately move forward coming from our authentic selves, instead of coming from a trauma response, such as being a people pleaser or being angry all the time, because that's not really who we are. That's coming from a place of that fright, of having to protect ourselves, and like I can only imagine a world where we are all regulated and showing up as our authentic selves. I can't even imagine, like, what greatness would come from it, collaboration and invention and, yeah, just all those awesome things that we're constantly trying to strive for. Michael Hingson ** 52:39 And someday, maybe we'll get there, Sarah Gienke ** 52:42 maybe. And that's okay that we're not there yet, because my mission is to help reduce that suffering one person at a time by helping co regulate with them. So Well, Michael Hingson ** 52:55 tell us more about your business reset and what it is, and how you do, what you do, and so on. Sarah Gienke ** 53:02 Yeah, so reset, resiliency, wellness, consultancy, and what I do is I help people reconnect back to their bodies, back to their nervous systems, teaching them about their nervous system, giving them very essential information that I think we should be learning in schools, but we are not. And also really providing them with trauma, informed knowledge and a somatic embodiment tool that we mentioned before called Tre. So really that's what I do, is I teach people, I educate them, and then provide them with something which I guide them through over several weeks, and then I kind of set them free, because my goal is not to work with people forever, which is kind of contrary to a lot of business ideas. However, because of my my history and my path and my story, I know the importance of, kind of like going through that graduation piece, of getting that self agency back so that you don't have to rely on anybody to do this work. You have this tool in your toolbox for the rest of your life, and it's quite transformative to say to say it in a small way. So Michael Hingson ** 54:14 where do your clients come from? Sarah Gienke ** 54:18 My clients come from referrals, a lot of word of mouth, and they come from me, messaging people on LinkedIn and posting on social media, and working on having I'm working on having a better SEO as well, but I getting website visits and, um, also just really providing people information and showing them the importance of this work, and then being attracted to me, Michael Hingson ** 54:53 you do a lot of the work virtually. Sarah Gienke ** 54:56 Yes, I do virtual work, and I also do in person work as well. So. I currently teach in person classes at home yoga in Madison, and I do my in person sessions there as well. And then, yeah, anyone that's not in that vicinity, we meet virtually, Michael Hingson ** 55:16 that's cool. So that if people want to reach out to you, they certainly can do that. And I would assume that you can interact with people virtually, that you don't need to necessarily have them right there on the spot with you. Sarah Gienke ** 55:30 Yes, you certainly can do this work virtually. I've worked with handfuls of clients virtually. I also like in person as well. But it really just boils down to location and where you're at. And either way, we're going to have a great program together and get you this tool and teach you this tool Michael Hingson ** 55:53 so you've been doing this business. So first of all, reset is spelled, how, R, i, Sarah Gienke ** 55:59 s, e, t, so just check I actually thought of it when I was meditating one day. I was thinking about the words rise and set, and then they kind of just overlapped. And I was like, wow, that is clever e to the i and b, rise and set. And so that is a nod to polyvagal theory, which is really the theory that all my work is based off of, which is how our nervous system we get triggered, the sympathetic comes on, we rise up and then helping people settle back down. So that's why the the logo is in kind of an arch, or kind of like a curve. It's also mimicking that what Michael Hingson ** 56:41 kind of people typically would come to you? Maybe another way to put that is what who are? Who is Tre, really, for Sarah Gienke ** 56:52 my teacher of Tre, always joke tre for anyone who's stressed tends to traumatized. Oh, there we Michael Hingson ** 56:59 go. That's a few people on the planet. Yeah, right, Sarah Gienke ** 57:02 but I will say who I tend to work with is, I do work with men, but I tend to work with more women than men, but it's really those people who are in transition in their lives. So I've, for example, worked with a woman who was in a sales job, she just wanted to absolutely, you know, just not do that. It wasn't, it wasn't fulfilling her. And so she was in a huge transition, and she ended up through our work, it helped. It helped her create time and space, and allowed her to then launch her own business and go after her own dreams. I've also worked with a another male who was working at a coffee shop, and he decided, You know what, I think I want to be the next owner. And so he was going through some huge transition there, and while we were working together, you know, decided to move forward with the sale. And now he's full owner of that coffee shop, stepping into his dream. So I think it's kind of tapping onto that, tapping into that authenticity and not being scared and letting our hindrances hold us back, but rather feeling coming from a place of calm and ease and authenticity and moving through that Michael Hingson ** 58:23 and really thinking about it and recognizing that sometimes it's okay to step out and take a chance, but do it wisely. Don't just do it arbitrarily. Sarah Gienke ** 58:33 Yeah, definitely, you definitely want to have some thought put into it. And, yeah, that's that can take some time. But I do ultimately think that it's worth a chance. Um, it's worth a opportunity. You have one life, and you might as well step out and try. I'd rather say, Oh, well, that didn't work then. Well, I don't know if that ever would have worked. That's the kind of camp that I'm pet. I'm in so Michael Hingson ** 59:01 well you don't know until you try or study on it. Yeah, exactly. Sarah Gienke ** 59:07 And then I also just wanted to mention too that I will be coming out with some courses soon as well. And so those aren't really aimed for leaders and organizations to become more trauma informed, and so you don't have to have experienced trauma to go through this. I think that this is work. This is literally what I think is the future of our workplaces, pretty much leadership, 2.0 if you will, and helping leaders understand and have more self awareness of themselves and how they come across and how they might have some conditioning around their past experiences and how they show up, but also understanding for their employees and what might be coming up from them or or how we're interpreting things. You know, for example, someone showing up late, well like. Get curious around that instead of just jumping into conclusions. Michael Hingson ** 1:00:04 Yeah, all too many people probably don't take enough time to necessarily understand the people around them, especially those that they lead, and really get to know them and recognize them for who they are and what they can do. But that doesn't work unless you really take the time to to learn about them Sarah Gienke ** 1:00:26 exactly. It's all about really relationships. So a lot of trauma is relational. It's on that one to one context. So understanding those dynamics and understanding all the pieces that come into play is going to make you such a better leader. Um, Michael Hingson ** 1:00:48 yeah, yeah, by by any definition. Sarah Wilson (00:02) Thank you so much for having me. I am so excited. I just really can't get enough of sharing all of the information that women need about reproductive health and empowerment. So thank you for having me. Michelle (00:14) Love it. So I'd love for you to share your background and how you got into the work with reproductive health. Sarah Wilson (00:21) It's such a huge conversation, I think such an important one because for so many of us, we get into it because we needed the medicine, right? And we explored that. So my story I always say is a really winding one. I was in and out of hospital my whole life until I was 18 and I was diagnosed with celiac disease, but I didn't fit the bill. And it was a naturopathic doctor that really pushed for that initial diagnosis. And so then, as we all do, Michelle (00:28) Mm -hmm, yeah. Mm -hmm. Sarah Wilson (00:49) I avoided my calling and was trying to figure out how to recover and how to work within this and lost my period for almost five years. And so during this time, I was a researcher and I was seeing different naturopathic doctors. I was seeing different conventional doctors and specialists and people just kept saying they didn't know what was going on and they couldn't figure out why I was, like I wasn't exceptionally lean during much of that period of time. Like they just couldn't piece it together. Michelle (00:58) wow. Sarah Wilson (01:18) I had a doctor, think it was 21, 22, that was like, you might never have kids on your own. If you wanna get pregnant, come back to me, I'll give you a pill, we'll wish you the best. Michelle (01:28) So nonchalant. Sarah Wilson (01:31) And I just, I always say there's a few breakdown to breakthrough moments in my life and that was a big one where I was just like, absolutely not. I have the world available to me. I have all of this research. There must be something I can figure out. So that proceeded to really get me to push to work and find the research and piece things together. And I did bring back my period. And then when it came back, it was exceptionally painful. I was passing out. I had been on birth control. Michelle (01:37) Mm -hmm. Yeah, good. Mm -hmm. Sarah Wilson (02:00) since I was 13 because of the amount of pain and heaviness. And so that's what it was like, okay, now we have to navigate this world of endometriosis and what that means. so yeah, now fast all the way forward, I became an astrophysicist doctor. I have two babies with two tries. I do not live in chronic pain and I'm just so passionate about taking all that research. I had to figure out myself and... Michelle (02:09) Mm Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (02:26) had to bring into practice and navigate how to bring into practice to now be able to give that to patients across advanced women's health clinics in Canada. it's just, it's a very empowering end to a really challenging journey, which I think so many people listening have. Michelle (02:44) Yeah, for sure. What I love about what you were saying is that knowing that inner knowing you're like, no, absolutely not. Like you knew it in your heart. Because a lot of people hear that. And then they're like, okay, I guess that's just my fate. And I love, you know, I love when people are like, no, I'm gonna take no for an answer. I'm gonna figure it out. and it's also an intuition. It's like your own intelligence within you telling you, no, there's more to look into. I had a similar thing a little different, but similar. so what was it, let's kind of go back just because people might be in similar situations with their period, listening to this. What was it that really caused the five years without period? was it being on a pill for a long time? What was it that caused that? Sarah Wilson (03:29) So I was actually, my presentation of celiac disease was very different. I was 100 pounds heavier than I am now. I perfectly, I exercised and I was obese. And so what, the brain is such a beautiful thing. And what I believe happened is that being obese, going through puberty programmed my brain for what body fatness, quote unquote, I needed to have in order to be safe to have a baby. Michelle (03:36) Mm Mm Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm. Sarah Wilson (03:59) And so for most people, they lose their periods around 16, 18 % body fat. I tend to hover around 23, 24. If I dip below that, then my period starts to go as long, it goes wonky. It's much better now, but the research suggests that when you have inflammation interacting with your brain, when you have cortisol interacting with your brain, what happens is we actually change how sensitive we are to the signals between the brain and the ovaries. Michelle (04:08) Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (04:28) And so I think that in combination with all these set point theories, there's so many things happening now in the world of set points, that combination is what it was. So for me, getting my inflammation under control, which we'll talk about, getting an understanding that I had stress, but it was physiological stress. I had nutrient deficiencies, I had bacterial overgrows, I had inflammation, like I had all of those pieces. that were interacting with my brain and my hormones. And so I just needed to go through step by step. I needed to work on my gut microbiome. I needed to work on the nervous system component. But fundamentally, I needed to understand that my body, the way it works and its sensitivity is set at a slightly different point than other people's. Michelle (05:18) Yeah, well, for sure. I mean, I think that that's really at the crux of everything is that everybody has their own different set point and different like, you know, responses, their bodies respond to different foods, different environments, different stress factors, just so many things. And I think that that's the key. I often see a lot of people sometimes come in to see me and they're well, I'm taking this kind of like, combination herbs that I saw online or, you know, so, that's, that's one of the things that I really try to stress to people is that everybody's so different. And so when you were going through that, you were uncovering it. Obviously you had a natural path that you were working with. Yeah, multiple. So they, you had a team. Sarah Wilson (05:58) And multiple. Yeah, absolutely. And I think I always say I'm the most energetic scientist you'll ever meet in your whole life. Like data informs every single decision. And then you sit in front of the person in front of you and you say, OK, what's their energy? Right. Like what? How do you need to to build those things together? And so, yeah, I had a team I had. Michelle (06:09) Mm Mm right. Totally. Sarah Wilson (06:23) And I had multiple naturopathic doctors try to work their way through it. I had OB -GYNs and my family healthcare team trying to help navigate it. And it was just, I was in the typical situation. I was in the situation that 90 % of my patients are in. Everyone's like, you're fine. It's fine. Your blood work is fine. Right? And that's, think, even for me doing research, one of the projects I was on was we were studying metabolically healthy people, metabolically unhealthy people. Michelle (06:41) Right, exactly. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (06:52) We were studying them in lean and obese categories. And so the labs going through and they're pulling all this data. And it was the first time that I'm sitting there going, huh, okay. So we can have people that are metabolically very healthy and overweight. And we can have people that are very lean and extremely metabolically unhealthy. And this was, it was such a formative experience because I remember sitting there going. Michelle (06:55) Mm Mm -hmm, right. Sarah Wilson (07:20) The blood work, the way we're reading it right now means nothing. Right? Like we need to be rude. Michelle (07:25) There's so much more. It's just a snapshot. It's like a small, it's a small little slice. And I think that's something that I often see too, is that we make such generalized assumptions based on such a small little snapshot. And while that snapshot is very important, it's, it's kind of a piece to the puzzle. It's not the end all be all it's part of the whole picture. Sarah Wilson (07:28) Exactly. Exactly, and if we use a conventional reference range that's defined based on disease, like I think in North America, we've really lost the understanding that there's a line between health and disease. Like you don't just jump from one to the other like long jump, right? It's not like I'm healthy today and tomorrow I have a disease. Like there's this spectrum of dis -ease as we make our way to a condition. And I think identifying patterns in labs. and identifying tendencies is arguably more important than the snapshot itself, you're 100 % correct. And so we have to look at that data holistically and say, how is that changing? How is that modifying over time? But also I think there's so much research now where we can give people back the keys to the castle with that basic blood work, right? Even for example, everyone has had what we call a complete blood count. We've had multiple of them. So that's... A complete blood count is when we're looking at your red blood cells and your white blood cells. We're looking at the breakdown of those things. It's the thing you get when you walk into the doctor's office, when you get when you walk into the hospital, et cetera. They're always just saying, what's your white blood cells? What's your red blood cells doing, et cetera. And there's two white blood cells called neutrophils and lymphocytes. They are just representing two aspects of our immune system that are fighting bacteria and viruses and they're helping to support the system. But there is a ton of research coming out to show that the ratio between neutrophil and lymphocytes can tell us about the inflammatory status of the body. So if your NLR, as we call it, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, is higher than 2 .5 or 3, chances are you've got an immunological underpinning to what's going on. And so for me with endometriosis, I was in the hospital a while ago now, and I was having a flare, and I was worried about ovarian torsion, because at one point I had had a 10 centimeter endometrial. Michelle (09:30) Mm -hmm. Sarah Wilson (09:40) like it was very, very large and it's not there now, but I just wanted to go in and make sure that there wasn't something happening because it felt different. And my NLR was six, but outside of that, it was one or two. So this is something I always say to patients, you can even empower yourself just looking at that number and being like, if that number is jumping high and it's correlating with my symptoms, if I have worse menstrual pain or worse mood challenges or Michelle (09:42) Mm -hmm. Mm Mm Mm -hmm. Sarah Wilson (10:08) I get pregnant and these things jump and then I have a loss, what could that be telling you about your immune system? And I think there's such simple things. Of course, we can run super comprehensive panels of labs and get all of the autoimmune tests. And like I've heard you talk about them on the podcast before, right? You can get really comprehensive panels and that's wonderful. And I love that as a doctor and a researcher, I love data. But what I love even more is saying, let's look at the past two or three years. Michelle (10:26) Mm Mm Right. Sarah Wilson (10:37) What are these basic blood markers telling us about your tendencies and how much we need to dig into different components of health, like your immune system, your blood sugar, those types of things? Michelle (10:48) So you could see this basically on just general blood work. Sarah Wilson (10:53) Exactly. And so that's where I think for me. Michelle (10:55) And do people often look like, do doctors even know to look for that specific thing? So it's kind of one of those things that people don't really look for, but you can kind of dig up your own stuff and just look at the ratio yourself. Sarah Wilson (11:07) Exactly. Exactly. And that's why I think I come on these podcasts and I do these things because not everyone has access to a naturopathic doctor. Not everyone can be a researcher. Exactly. So to be able to look at that and start to question, even when I was in the hospital, I was like, are you concerned about that? And they're like, maybe you have a bacterial infection. It's not a big deal. Okay. Okay. Right? But it's... Michelle (11:16) Yeah, that's very empowering. Mm -hmm. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (11:30) It's those things that I want people to be able to grab onto and access for themselves because what I know to be true in my practice, seeing so many people, is when you give women access to information about their bodies, they change communities, households, everything. Like it is the most empowering thing for me to come on a podcast and talk about something and then... Michelle (11:46) Mm Yeah. Sarah Wilson (11:57) get someone message me and be like, my friend of a friend of a friend told me to look at this and now I'm concerned about it. And I'm like, yeah, you should probably get that investigated. And then it's ovarian cancer. You know what I mean? Like this is how powerful just these conversations are. Michelle (12:08) my God, yeah. Yeah, it's very powerful. mean, obviously when you do see that something's off, it'll get you at least to take the next steps or to investigate it more because you can't really make, you know that something's going on, but you have to like really move further and see what it is. But at least it's going to be an alarm to let you know something's going on. Sarah Wilson (12:35) Mmm. And a direction, right? I, every day, pretty much at this point, I'm talking to someone who's like, everything I was told was unexplained, right? And in the fertility world, if you're unexplained infertility, you either have a baby or you don't, right? So there's clarity in that, no one's saying, your infertility is in your head. But in every other aspect, there's not those clear end points. And so, Michelle (12:40) Mm Mm -hmm. Mm Sarah Wilson (13:07) if someone's dealing with chronic pain and they aren't getting investigated for endometriosis or some other condition, they can be told it's all in their head. So even if they can see on basic blood work, one or two things that are off, it's like, there, go there, let's do this. And I think that's what's so exciting to me. Michelle (13:24) Mm -hmm. Right, right. Yeah, definitely huge. So talk about the immune system. this is one of the things that you can look at, I know that there is a lot of a connection with autoimmune conditions and the gut health and, high inflammation and leaky gut. So talk about that, how people can look into it and how they can address it. Sarah Wilson (13:53) Absolutely. So I actually also was a microbiome researcher at one point in my profession. It's so important. And even now, like post pandemic, we've seen it so much more important because historically, what do we always say? Is 60 to 80 % of your immune system lives in your gut. Okay. So there is within your gut, there is, it's so interesting. Picture a PVC pipe, right? On the inside, if there's Play -Doh. Michelle (13:59) awesome. Amazing, though, but it's so important. Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (14:23) that's where the bacteria live, right? But that's actually outside of your body. And so that play -doh is either poop, in those of us who are lovingly chronically constipated, or it's the mucosal lining that the bacteria live within. So that's where the immune system is really, really critical, is within that putty lining. And so what happens is that immune system's job, because it's technically outside of your body, mouth. Michelle (14:26) Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (14:51) all the way down to your anus is outside of your body. Its whole job is to say, are you a food and you're safe? Are you a bacteria and you're safe? Are you a virus and you're not safe? Are you a bacteria and you're not safe? And the whole job of that immune system is to sample and navigate. Do I need to kick off an inflammatory response or do I not? Am I safe or am I not? And so what we're looking at is when we start to have allergies. and we start to have food responses and all these food sensitivities when we start to have bloating and gas changes in bowel movements. That's all telling us that our immune system either one has identified a bacteria or virus that needs to go and it's kicking off a response to it or two, it has what we call lost oral tolerance. It has lost the ability to know between what's good and what's bad. Michelle (15:46) Mm. Sarah Wilson (15:47) And so in both of those situations, that is going to result in inflammation, not just local to our gut, but throughout what we call our peritoneal cavity, right? So that's gonna be your ovaries. I always say, your bowel and your ovaries and your uterus are friends. Like for those of you who can't see it, they're touching, they're friends. So we have that inflammation in our reproductive system. We have that inflammation affecting our liver. then it goes into our bloodstream. It affects our joints, it affects our brain. That's why we talk so much about the gut brain connection, because there's that inflammation there. But as a practitioner, my job is to sit here and say, is it that we have so much inflammation? There is this absence of an ability to regulate, should I fight this or should I not? Is it that there's so much damage being caused by inflammation that now we have leaky gut or impermeability, right? Because the immune system will cause damage and it's trying to fight something and there's collateral damage. So is it that or is it that there's bacteria that need to be modified? And so I think it's really helpful, even like thought experiment to think about it in that way, because so much of the time when it comes to the gut, we Michelle (16:43) Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (17:05) are assuming that our symptoms are wrong. Like, what's wrong with my gut? Right? Like, we're a victim to it. Like, our immune system is doing something bad. But nine times out of 10, it's trying its best to protect us. And so our job is to say, what is it protecting you against? Michelle (17:08) Mm -hmm. Right. Mm Mm Right. Sarah Wilson (17:25) So when we're navigating and we're going through then, we hear all about probiotics and we hear all about these different things and all of them can be helpful and have their place, right? We hear about armor colostrum all the time these days on different podcasts, right? We hear about all these things. And so I always say, think about them and put them in the context of what I just said. So if we don't have enough good bugs and we add probiotics, which are good bugs, Michelle (17:36) Mm Mm right, yeah. Sarah Wilson (17:52) then that will take us so far. for, again, for those of you who can't see, I've got my hands up, right? Picture it like a bar graph. So if you don't have enough good bugs and that bar is low and you have too many bad bugs, then the dominant state is bad bugs. So if you add a whole bunch of good bugs, then eventually you can turn that dominant state into good bugs. But probiotics are transient, they leave the system. So you still have that low grade bad bug situation. Michelle (18:06) Mm Sarah Wilson (18:21) So this is where we hear about berberine, right? We hear about oregano, we hear about black cumin seed, we're hearing so much about all of these herbs now, because what they're doing is they're breaking down the bad bugs to allow the good bugs to grow, to repair the lining. it's, there's such a huge dance with the bugs in the gut and the immune system and how that affects the rest of your body, but what we know for darn sure is that Michelle (18:23) Mm Right. Right. Sarah Wilson (18:49) There are overgrowths that are happening more than they ever have been before of bad bugs. We know that. Michelle (18:55) Right. So we're talking about things like SIBO, you know, just that, because that ultimately it starts to kind of go from like the bowels all the way up. Sarah Wilson (19:04) Yeah, exactly. So SIBO is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. So it's overgrowth of good bugs in the small intestine. We also have what we call CFO or overgrowth of yeast in the small intestine because the immune system can't defend against the yeast. Then we have bad bugs and parasites, right? So this is where we hear an overgrowth of, I'll throw some names, like Pseudomonas, C. difficile, Clostridium species, E. coli. We have an overgrowth of bad bugs in that situation. And those can be Michelle (19:11) Mm Mm Mm Mm -hmm. Bye. Mm Sarah Wilson (19:34) upper but they can also be lower down. And so that's always what we're navigating is saying, okay, is there, if you have an overgrowth of good bacteria and you add more good bacteria, you're gonna be the person who feels awful on probiotics. You take them, you're gassy, you're distended, okay, in that, yeah. Michelle (19:49) Right. Unless, unless they're spore based. Sarah Wilson (19:56) The SBOs are such an interesting conversation. They're such an interesting conversation because most of the research is coming out of two labs. And so I agree to some extent and I'm pensive. Yeah. Michelle (19:59) Yeah. Mm -hmm. Okay. No, tell me, tell me. I want to hear it because, because I've always been told and I've always learned that spore -based probiotics, because, they, they bypass the small intestine, they go all the way down to, you know, the colon that, and then they, and then they flourish and they change the pH and they, they make it so that it's more hospitable for the good bacteria to grow and not the bad bacteria. A lot of times there's like die -off symptoms and it Sarah Wilson (20:32) Exactly. Michelle (20:36) kind of shifts, even though it's transient, it does shift the pH to create it where it's better for a healthier environment. Sarah Wilson (20:47) Absolutely. So it's just like that bar graph, right? I always say if you give the environment for the good bugs to grow and there's not too many bad ones, then they will grow and take over. If you ever, I always tell people picture like an octopus or a cuttlefish, you know they change colors really rapidly? Our bacteria do the same thing. It's called quorum sensing. And so essentially if you create a hospitalable environment, you have enough mucus. This is the other thing, right? Bacteria need mucus. Michelle (20:49) Mm Yeah. Yeah. Mm -hmm. Yeah. Mm -hmm. Mm The mucosal lining. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (21:13) Exactly. So if you have that integrity, you add probiotics, and then you can change from a red environment, inflamed, the pH is off, there's bad bugs growing to a good environment. If you don't have that mucosal lining, if your immune system is too grumpy, or if you're in a situation where there's too many bad bugs, then you can't fix it by adding more. Michelle (21:17) Mm -hmm. Mm Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (21:40) And so that's where we're using antibiotics and antimicrobial herbs and things like that to get that down. Going back to the SBOs, the thing I find really interesting is there's so many, I could like nerd out on this stuff all day long as you can tell, but there's so many factors, right? So when we talk about it bypasses the small intestine, what they mean in that situation is that all bugs are either acid sensitive, temperature sensitive, Michelle (21:54) It's great stuff though. Sarah Wilson (22:09) oxygen sensitive or yeah, I went through acid. Those are honestly the main ones. There's nitrogen sensitive, things like that, but those are the main ones. So what they're saying is the acid sensitivity means that they will get, and the temperature and oxygen sensitivity means they're gonna get lower down. But what we're seeing more and more and more is that people's stomach acid is off, their pH is off throughout their whole system. They have all kinds of, Michelle (22:32) Mm Sarah Wilson (22:37) you know, temperature sensitivity changes. And we have all kinds of changes in the hydrogen, methane and oxygen levels within our gastrointestinal tract. So what happens is we're not actually controlling where it's going. We're controlling at what environment it takes hold. And because there's so much dysfunction within the gastrointestinal tract in so many of our patients, I'm concerned that it actually could take hold. and be present at higher levels of the gastrointestinal tract contributing to issues. And I've seen some... Yeah, that's BOs. Yeah. Michelle (23:10) You mean the spore based ones, the spore based? you, because from what I understand, looking into it is that it won't activate until it gets to the large intestine. Sarah Wilson (23:23) And that's based on the pH, the oxygen level and the temperature and all of those pieces. Michelle (23:29) Okay, I see. So you're saying that it could be a different pH and everything will shift if things are so off, up, you know, higher. Got it. Sarah Wilson (23:36) Exactly. Exactly. And I've seen severe constipation in patients that take SBOs. It's like the only side effect I see, because you're right, there is a lot less bloating gas, those like three to five day battle between the good and the bad bugs. There's less of that for sure. But I have seen like enough patients that got me saying, okay, what's going on there that take it. Michelle (23:47) Mm Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm. Yeah. Mm Sarah Wilson (24:04) and immediately they're super constipated. So we actually use them a lot in diarrhea because of the benefit of that. But it's definitely a space I'm watching the research. It's super interesting. I think just like, so I was, my God, how many years ago now was I a probiotic researcher? least 10. It's a different world, right? Like how exactly, so. Michelle (24:10) Mm -hmm. Yeah. Mm -hmm. yeah, they're learning so much so fast. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (24:30) Exactly. So that's where I always say, you know, you're a good practitioner when you want to refund everyone every five years. You're like, what was I doing? So I think it's just an evolving conversation, but they definitely do have utility for sure. I think there's just, for me, just having been in a research environment, I know how controlled all of those situations are. And so then when they come out into our patient situations, Michelle (24:35) Yeah. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (24:56) We just need to apply different lenses of thought to it. Michelle (25:01) Or I mean, you can also add something like Trifola while they're doing that so that you're kind of like counteracting the constipation aspect or maybe some more fiber eventually when they're ready, you know, because sometimes too much of that when things are not great can exacerbate. Sarah Wilson (25:17) Absolutely. And like we have studies now that are coming out to show that it's alarming. Over 50 % of people have what we call retained fecal matter, which is like constipation when they don't know constipation. And so I think there's so much that we're finding out and there's so much that's going on within the gut microbiome world that will be. Again, I'm just always so curious to see where it goes and to see what happens with it. Because even I wrote a book in 2018, I guess. So I was writing in 2017 on insulin resistance and how that worked. And like I talked about in Cretins in a big section of that book. This was like pre -Ozempic days. And people at that point were like, what is she talking about? And now it's so accepted. And that's what six years later, right? They're just like, of course. Michelle (26:08) Yeah. Sarah Wilson (26:11) So, so much changes so quickly. And I think just staying on top of it is something I value so much. Like even today, I'm teaching an intensive on post -viral immunology for other practitioners, right? So, I'm always trying to navigate what do I see in practice? Because we see thousands of people in advanced women's health. And how is that showing up in the research? And how do we mesh those things and adapt with those things? Because things change so quickly. Michelle (26:14) Yeah, for sure. Mm yeah, definitely. No, I agree. mean, everything just kind of out does itself. Something new comes along. what I find really fascinating is the gut brain relationship and the enteric nervous system and also the vagus nerve and how that impacts. It's kind of like the go between our brain and our gut. And, and also Sarah Wilson (26:50) Yeah. Michelle (27:01) the research on that where they've done like studies on meditators and like people in Tibet, Tibetan Buddhists, compared to people that are neighbors that eat the same food, they live in the same environment, but the gut microbiome of the meditators is so much more enriched. So it's kind of like a buy between, yes, we could work from the gut to the brain, then we can also work from the brain to the gut. And it's pretty fascinating. Sarah Wilson (27:12) Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely, and even to see the amount of research on people's levels and how that is directly related to yeast infections. We know that that whole gastrointestinal tract, vaginal microbiome, they are so, so, so closely tied to our nervous system and stress response. There's so much, I do. Michelle (27:34) Mm Mm That's interesting. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (27:52) stool testing on myself pretty frequently. I would say even more so than patients, I do it on my family. And it's so interesting to see how it shifts because again, diet and lifestyle can stay very similar. So it's like interesting what caused that shift, what caused that shift, how was stress involved with these things. it's, yeah, it's so fun. It's so fun. Michelle (27:58) Yeah. Mm -hmm. Yeah, it's fascinating for sure. And then also, think about the gut microbiome, I think about the changes, I think about inflammation. I think about the additives we're eating and we're exposed to. mean, those are the biggest things because it feels like it's outside of our control. I mean, it kind of is until we know about it. It's, know, we go eat some places, we have no idea what they're adding and we know that Sarah Wilson (28:33) Mm Michelle (28:40) thickeners, I mean, there's so many things that can be added. We know that they can really throw off the gut microbiome and that throws off inflammation. So it's kind of like an unintended consequence because you're not, most of us don't know that unless we're doing what we're doing and learn about it. Sarah Wilson (29:00) And then you're looking, is there SLS in this? Is this disrupting my microbiome? Michelle (29:04) Yeah, but that's what it is. And that's why when people say, I guess, to simplify it is just don't eat processed food as much as, try to avoid it as much as possible. Because even like the good kind can impact your gut. mean, like good processed food, because of all of the excess ingredients that they add in there, that could really throw off your microbiome. That's why when people say just, I guess, like, if you want to say something that's more generalized, is more whole foods, foods that come from the earth and also foods that are not sprayed with toxins, know, I mean, to try to avoid it. It does feel like an uphill battle. Sarah Wilson (29:44) Patients are so overwhelmed, right? It's you're trying to eat whole foods and then you look and they're like, okay, well, what about genetically modified agents? And then what about what's being sprayed on them? And I always say that in of itself is a stress response, right? So we talk about stress and then we make food such a stress. And so I always say to people, the reality is that you could probably do better than you're doing right now. Michelle (29:45) Yeah. Sarah Wilson (30:12) and what feels reasonable, what doesn't feel overwhelming, right? And we'll actually sit there and go through and say, okay, I need you to eat a low insulin demand approach, because insulin is such a huge inflammatory compound. Insulin is the hormone that controls blood sugar, but it's like 75 plus percent of us are insulin resistant in today's day and age. So it's a huge, it's an epidemic. So I'm like, okay, don't eat a ton of carbohydrates, Michelle (30:14) Mm Yeah. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (30:43) I hate good carbs, bad carbs, but berries, all of those highly colorful fruits and vegetables, don't count them. Eat away, enjoy your life. I'm not talking about that. We all know we shouldn't eat as much bread. Deep fried foods are not helping anyone, right? The starchy carbohydrates, rice, like that. We have to watch those things. We built a culture on creating addiction to carbohydrates. So we have to be careful of those things. But it's like, how can you add two servings of vegetables? If you can... Michelle (30:52) Yeah. Nope. True. Sarah Wilson (31:12) buy local and you know where they're coming from, rock on. Like it's summer here right now. There's farms that I know do not spray anything, but they cannot certify organic because they can't afford it. Okay, wonderful. I can go there, right? Buy frozen organic. It is pretty much the same price to buy frozen organic as it is to buy broccoli right now, right? And saves my life prepping it. It is picked right. Michelle (31:26) Yeah. Mm -hmm. 100%. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (31:41) It is frozen right away. There's benefits to it. So it's like, do that. Okay, then we look at our meat. How, or if you're eating meat or not, How is it being raised? Would you want to go visit that farm? Because if you would not feel good around that, then energetically that has an impact, right? What hormones are going into it? We look at those things. And the reality is, if you can't... afford to make those choices wonderful. That happens. What do we do to feel the best about the options that we have in front of us? Fundamentally, I always say balance blood sugar and a nervous system that is stable and you're not having anxiety every time you put food in your mouth because you don't know what's in it. That is going to take us almost just as far as micromanaging every piece and every ingredient. Whole foods more often eaten away that fills you up, that makes you feel good. And everything else from there is customizable. But I think I hear so many patients, they get so caught up in fresh, organic, grass fed, grass finished, researching the farm, and then they end up in McDonald's. Michelle (32:57) Yeah, that's not good. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (32:59) because they're so overwhelmed, right? They're like, I'm just hungry. And so I always say like a happy balance is always gonna be the goal. Michelle (33:08) Yeah, no doubt, for sure. Sarah Wilson (33:10) And your microbiome loves colors and there's not many of those at McDonald's, so. Exactly. Michelle (33:14) Yeah, variety for sure. Yes, totally. And then you were talking about like symptoms even without a diagnosis, Sarah Wilson (33:24) So the blood work is one piece, right? So even without a diagnosis, you can do complete blood count. You can do something called a C -reactive protein, which is a marker of gut inflammation, liver inflammation. You can do an arethrocytes sedimentation rate. These are blood markers. But I also say, if you are struggling with joint aches and pains, if you feel like you're just getting older, if you are dealing with brain fog, if you... Michelle (33:26) Mm Mm Sarah Wilson (33:53) have pain with your periods that we have normalized so much as a society. If you have period poops, if you have PMS that is affecting your quality of life, like we have so many of these symptoms that we've been told, I'm just getting older, I have aches and pains, I'm just bloated and gassy, it's not a big deal, I just have brain fog, I'm losing my memory, right? I can't remember where I put my keys. I'm dealing with like menstrual challenge. That is all inflammation based, all of it. And as someone I think who lives in this world all the time, it's so easy to forget what it feels like to feel crappy until you get hit. And I have two small children. I have a two and a five year old. And so we're sick all the time, right? Like it's just the reality, daycare, school, people get sick. And It's so easy to just again, lose track of what good actually feels like. And it doesn't include those things, right? You should wake up in the morning feeling rested, unless you have a child who has nightmares about monkeys, which happened to me. Right? But you should be able to sustain that energy throughout the day without eating food. You shouldn't have to compromise your activity and your work schedule based on pain. Michelle (35:05) Right. Sarah Wilson (35:17) and energy levels and your menstrual cycle or your digestion. And so many people are living in that state where they are. Michelle (35:22) Yeah. And so when you do have people that come in with inflammation, what are some of the ways that you address that Sarah Wilson (35:33) absolutely. So my belief structures, there's only five to seven causes of disease, right? So we go through blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance, the gut microbiome, immune dysregulation, we've got liver issues, we have nutrient deficiencies, the nervous system, and then we have the components of cellular energy production, or what we call our mitochondria, right? So these are the components of health. And at the end of every piece of that, you're going to have a stress response and an inflammatory response, which is what most people are dealing with in today's day and age is they're struggling between that balance of stress response and inflammation. So my job is always going through those components and saying, which are the top two or three for you, right? If we're talking about microbiome issues and the immune system as two key pieces. And then we say, okay, let's compliment that with the nervous system because we just talked about that. If those are someone's top three pieces, then first and foremost, we have to go through and say, what are the biggest obstacles? What are your gut symptoms? Does that suggest that you might have an overgrowth of methane species? Right? Does that, that tends to be constipation, lots of gas that doesn't smell great. Is it suggesting that you have hydrogen overgrowth? Right? that's lots of gas that doesn't necessarily have a smell. We can go through, pick those apart. Do you have a history of parasites? Right, do you camp a lot? Those pieces, we're using antimicrobials in those situations to try to create some stability. We're trying to understand how that's gonna relate to blood sugar, et cetera. When it comes to looking at the immune system, there are key nutrients like vitamin D. If you don't have vitamin D, at the right level, which most of us do not, that's a master controller of your immune system. So we need to have that in place. We also need to look at your viral history. So we know right now, research is showing that you can retain components of viruses for years. We've seen that people have reactivation of chronic viruses and those are directly affecting the lining of their uterus, they're directly affecting their ovaries. Michelle (37:44) Mm Sarah Wilson (37:55) and their whole pelvic health. So in that situation, we're saying, okay, what antivirals need to come into the mix? And what do we need, again, to look at from a holistic perspective? I know you've had so many people on here that talk about NAC and N -acetylcysteine and alpha -lipoic acid and CoQ10. And oftentimes what they're doing is just helping with those inflammatory cycles. Michelle (38:22) Mm Sarah Wilson (38:22) right, they're helping to restore balance to that inflammatory pathway. And then the nervous system comes in because that affects blood flow that affects your immune system's ability to do its job. And we say what works for you? Is that nerve nerves, right? That's where our valerian our passionflower, our zycephos come into the mix and are so beautiful. Is that going to be something where it's we're looking at meditation and walking? and all of those pieces. that's really the approach I take, is I say, in those five to seven different causes that someone could have, what are the most important pieces for them? And then we dig into it at depth to say what components, whether that's using blood work, whether that's using functional testing, honestly, at this point, having seen as many patients as I've seen, sometimes it's insane. You're like, okay, I think we need anti -microbials. some valerian and passion flower, and we need to correct the nutrient deficiencies that are present with respect to vitamin D and some of those antioxidants. We need to get enough protein, more colors, Bob's your uncle. But it's, I always say, health is so simple, and we have so much time and energy dedicated to making it really hard. And... Michelle (39:31) Right. Sarah Wilson (39:42) the more sophisticated I get, the more sophisticated the research gets, the more I go down rabbit holes, the more I come back to the same things. And I think there's so much peace in that too, to know that, yes, I have a lot of patients with very chronic health issues, with very significant imbalances, but the body wants to come back to those places and we just need to figure out which levers to pull to get it back to health. Michelle (39:49) Right. I love how you put that. It's true. It's just like, are the levers to pull, to try to help it do its job. what it wants to do really, it's like its purpose. Sarah Wilson (40:24) Exactly. it's so, like sometimes you're pulling the same levers in rotation, right? You're like, okay, blood sugar, stress response, liver. And then you're like, inflammation, gut microbiome, stress response, blood sugar, liver. It's, you sometimes have to cycle back to those pieces. There's like the layers of the healing onion. So as we always say, but it's, there's so much simplicity that can be had within all of it. And I really want people to feel that because I think, Michelle (40:28) Mm -hmm. Right. Yeah. Sarah Wilson (40:50) There's a lot of energy now being dedicated to feeling like health is gate kept and it's not, right? This is why we come on these podcasts. This is why we do these things. If anyone today says, I feel empowered, I can take action here. I'm gonna add more vegetables. I'm gonna add more colors. I'm gonna go for a walk after my meals, ideally in nature. I'm gonna look at what brings me joy. Michelle (40:57) Yeah. Sarah Wilson (41:17) and include more of that. I'm gonna work on my boundaries, I'm gonna correct my nutrient deficiencies, and I'm gonna look at my microbiome. You will get so far, so far in your health. And that to me is just, it's so beautiful. Michelle (41:26) Yeah. yeah, for sure. mean, it's really empowerment. So, well, this is great. You shared so much amazing information. I could definitely keep talking to you because there's just so much that we can keep unpacking. Well, thank you. know I was, these are always such loaded conversations because we start and it's like, do we go here? Do we go here? So exactly. Michelle (42:00) I know. There's just a, a, branches out and it has, it starts to take a life of its own. And then I'm like, okay, well, we still can't keep going, going, going. at one point. Sarah Wilson (42:11) I know totally. Yeah, so I, as I said, for anyone listening in Canada, I own Advanced Women's Health. So we have clinics across Ontario and BC and we're expanding.
