However, are we doomed to make the same mistakes for the rest of our lives? Thankfully, Dr. Catherine Sanderson reassures us that we aren't! In this episode, we discuss how we can improve our attachment patterns with Dr. Sanderson, the Poler family professor of psychology at Amherst College and an expert on close relationships. She shares insights and tips from the latest research on attachment patterns. SOBERISDOPE.COM Tim Lodgen grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he signed a skateboard contract that had him riding with Bucky Lasek and Brandon Novak. Playing sports kept him away from drugs and alcohol until he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Senior in High School. He thought he'd let off some steam before he had to enter the highly regimented life of a soldier, and during that time, he did every drug he could get his hands on. Soon he was deployed to Somalia, where massive amounts of alcohol took the place of the drugs. When he finally returned home, he was happy to be out of the military but quickly fell into a deep depression that had him sitting with a gun in his lap and thinking about suicide. He finally admitted his depression and was diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder. Still, without ever admitting to his drug and alcohol use, he spent the next 20 years with incorrect doses that did little for his mental health. Tim then began a career as an MMA fighter. An eventual injury led him to introduce opiates into his use, which sent his addiction to another level and caused a second suicide attempt. He finally found help 27 years into his addiction after his wife discovered him preparing to take his own life. He has since become the healthiest version of himself, even coming in 3rd place in a Muscle and Fitness bodybuilding contest. Tim now uses his platform to help others by telling his story, working with the homeless, and offering addiction and health advice through his Instagram account. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soberisdope/message

Kharma Vella is the Brand Product Director at Poler. Kharma was an original co-founder of the brand, and the creative mastermind behind some of Poler's most notable products. He was ousted from the company by his partner, but rejoined in October of last year - post brand bankruptcy - as Poler prepared to relaunch under new ownership. Originally founded in 2010, Poler is an outdoor brand that aims to fill the void between action sports and outdoor wear; they have been described as a lovechild of Volcom and Patagonia. Poler grew rapidly to high 7-figure revenues in 2016, then took a nosedive before filing for Bankruptcy in 2019. Now they are back. This is their story and the lessons they've learned. Kharma is passing them along in hopes that other brands avoid making the same mistakes. Today you'll learn what Poler did wrong. What happened at the peak of their growth in 2015-2016 (changes in leadership, operation, and marketing) that set them on the downward spiral towards bankruptcy? Most importantly, you'll learn what they're doing differently today to scale back up. “It's a warning story around trying to run a wholesale business along with a direct consumer online business and the importance of operations, logistics, and maintaining wholesale relationships.” - Kharma Vella Some topics that were discussed include: What is Poler? How do they position themselves? Why their initial success was lucky - and how they leveraged Instagram to scale. The source of the majority of sales (retailers/wholesale business) How they built brand equity with Instagram, then used that branding to get into retail stores - their main sales channel. The downfall of Poler - why wholesale demand declined (and why retailers stopped buying) How operations/logistics issues killed the wholesale business, and the decline of sales that followed. Moving Forward: How Poler is recovering after bankruptcy with their focus on product, sustainability and rebuilding the wholesale business ------ Subscribe to The Commerce Lab premium newsletter: We recently launched our *NEW* weekly premium newsletter, The Commerce Lab: https://bluestout.com/thecommercelab The newsletter is an extension of this podcast that deconstructs the operations and strategies that have worked for today's top brands (that have grown to where you want to be), into actionable guides you and your team can implement. FounderLine host Joe Beninato and guest Ariel Poler answer listener questions including: How do angel investors find investments? What about launching a company into a space where there have been multiple entrants but no successes? What about some of the online services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo? Are those a viable way to launch a product? At the very early stages of our company, should we do a convertible note or an equity round? What target IRR do investors look for when looking at an opportunity to invest? Does that number differ inversely with the assessed likelihood of the company being successful? In the "Ask The Lawyer" segment, Mitch Zuklie of Orrick discusses corporate structures.
