EPISODE 683 - Anson Joaquin - Author of Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction and Epic Fantasy - The Infernal Age seriesAnson Joaquin joins the show from Roanoke, Virginia, a mountain town he describes with both affection and humor. While the location may have been jokingly dismissed by others, it provides the peaceful setting where Anson balances family life, a full time job, and his work as a novelist.Anson shares how his love of storytelling began early. As a child he was introduced to fantasy and science fiction through books like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. That early exposure sparked a lifelong interest in imaginative worlds and planted the idea that one day he would write a book of his own.The turning point came after a vivid dream about a man on fire wielding an axe while fighting demons in the real world. The imagery stayed with him so strongly that he began writing down everything he could remember the next morning. What started as notes about the dream quickly expanded into ten pages of world building and eventually became the foundation for his series.Anson quickly learned that having a great idea is only the first step. Early in the process he discovered the difference between writers who “pants” their stories and those who outline them in advance. Although he initially believed he was someone who could simply sit down and write, he realized outlining the plot and character arcs gave him the structure he needed to make steady progress. With a demanding schedule and four children at home, his writing routine happens early in the morning before the rest of the day begins. Each session is guided by a clear goal. Knowing what he wants to accomplish in each chapter allows him to make the most of limited writing time and continue building the story step by step. The series blends science fiction, fantasy, and horror within a post apocalyptic setting. The story begins with a failed secret experiment that tears open a breach between worlds, unleashing terrifying creatures often described as demons. The narrative follows three central human characters and occasionally shifts perspective to one of the demons, a storytelling choice inspired by feedback from early beta readers who wanted to see more of that character.Key takeaway: A compelling story may begin with a spark of inspiration, but turning that idea into a finished book requires structure, persistence, openness to feedback, and a commitment to learning every part of the creative and publishing process. The Infernal Age series is a post-apocalyptic genre blend of science-fiction, fantasy, and horror that explores the themes of humanity, metamorphosis, alienation, masculinity (both toxic and ideal), willpower, duty, friendship, love, predation, magic, science, philosophy, and pithy quips. The series gradually becomes more fantasy as it progresses, as the world adjusts to its new reality. While the series is anchored in the traditions of The Mist and Dies the Fire, among others, it is also for people whose favorite part of Cabin in the Woods was the banter between the scientists in the lab, or whose favorite scene in Kill Bill Vol 2 was Bill's soliloquy about Superman's implicit contempt for the human race.https://www.ansonjoaquin.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Actor David Carradine, renowned for Kung Fu and Kill Bill, died at 72 in a Bangkok hotel on June 4, 2009, under bizarre circumstances. Found naked in a closet with cords tied around his neck and genitals, police suspected accidental death by autoerotic asphyxiation rather than suicide. Key details surrounding his life and death include:The Incident: Carradine was found by a hotel maid in the Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel, hanging in a closet with curtains.Cause of Death: While initially reported as a potential suicide, forensic experts and police indicated the death was likely an accidental result of dangerous sexual practices.Controversy: There were no signs of a struggle in the room, but the peculiar, bound nature of the body led to widespread speculation and tabloid coverage.Final Days: Witnesses reported that Carradine appeared to be in good spirits, playing piano in the hotel lobby just days before his death while in Thailand to film the movie Stretch.Unusual Life: Known for a tumultuous personal life, he had previously spoken about his struggles with suicidal thoughts and had a history of erratic behavior, including a 1974 incident where he was arrested for breaking into a neighbor's home while naked.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

We went in expecting a messy anthology and came out with a genuinely original love letter to Oakland, 1987 — four stories that start as separate vibes and then click together in the final act like a mixtape that suddenly makes sense. The setup is pure mood: people spilling out of a cinema after The Lost Boys, a bright green “something in the air” glow hanging over the city, and a pulpy, comic-book style that flirts with Sin City / Scott Pilgrim energy. It's stylish, funny, and—when it wants to be—ferociously violent. What we cover in the episodeThe anthology structure: four chapters that interconnect and payoff later, with Oakland culture (music, venues, street energy) doing most of the heavy lifting.Chapter 1: “Strength in Numbers – The Gilman Strikes Back” A straight-edge punk club gets terrorised by Nazi skinheads… and the punks decide they're not taking it anymore. We talk wish-fulfilment retribution, the myth-making tone, and the film's “300-style” brawl choreography.Chapter 2: “Don't Fight the Feeling” Two women from rap group Danger Zone get their shot at a battle with Too $hort — and turn it into an 80s feminist mic-drop. The ice-cream shop scene with a vile, racist cop is one of the most uncomfortable (and effective) bits in the whole film.Chapter 3: “Born to Mack” (Pedro Pascal) A one-last-job crime thread that flips into tragedy and revenge. We dig into how this segment links the others, and why it feels like the “spine” of the film.Chapter 4: “The Sleepy Floyd Story” A real NBA legend (29 points in a quarter) gets turned into a Kill Bill-style revenge myth — samurai swords, home-invasion carnage, and a final twist that goes full pulpy sci-fi.The big theme: modern, direct, and not subtle — Nazis can get in the bin. The film turns that into catharsis, and it lands. The verdictThis is a labour-of-love movie: inventive, ridiculously well-styled, packed with music, and shot so you can actually see what's happening in dark scenes (rare these days). It does get very bloody—especially the final stretch—but it's never boring. If you want an episode with hype, plot breakdown, and us arguing where the film crosses from “clever urban legend” into “absolute madness,” this one's for you.You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Jay GlennieTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know author Jay Glennie. Jay is the author of MANY, MANY large format books covering the making of certain films. In this episode, Jay and I chat about how he came to this very specific niche writing. Jay has written several books on the behind the scenes and making of some of the greatest films in history. We begin with his goal to interview British Oscar winners, and what he intended to do with those interviews and notes. Then we jump into how he turned his passion into a real job. Jay has written books on Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter, Trainspotting, as others. His newest book is called "The Making of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It is an in depth look into what it took to bring Tarantino's vision to fruition. Jay flew all over the world, interviewing the actors, producers, costumers, set designers, and just about everyone who worked on the film. He brings to life the intensity and tirelessness that was the journey to get this film made. This 170,000+ word tome dives deep; with interviews and stories from just about everyone involved and brings to life some of the most amazing photographs, props, and set pieces of this cinematic masterpiece. Jay shares stories of his road to get some of these interviews, and how he even came into contact with some of the greatest actors, producers, and directors of the last century. We cover his journey of making his first couple of books and carry Jay's journey right on through to his NEXT two books and are slated to be released this year and the next. Great tales of meeting and getting to know some of the greats; Like Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Spencer Garrett, and so many more. Jay also explains HOW to talk to some of these icons, who are approached every day. The Making of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is 8 pounds of AWESOME! It is available EVERYWHERE you get good books and just happens to be on sale (50% off) at the time of this episode's release (Amazon), so go get it for the movie lover in your life or get it for yourself. I guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed!
This week, Darragh, Cian and Kev are back with an episode that swings wildly across sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and franchise fatigue. We kick things off with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, debating whether Trek's new lighter, younger tone is a bold evolution or a step too far into whimsy. Is this the future of Star Trek—or the point of no return? From there, Kev brings unexpected praise for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Game of Thrones spin-off that trades dragons and doom for hopeful knights, low stakes, and surprisingly effective toilet humour. Then things go fully nuclear as we dive into Jujutsu Kaisen, with Kev arguing it's delivered one of the greatest anime episodes of all time — a brutal, stylish, Kill Bill-inspired explosion of violence that sparks a wider conversation about why anime keeps running laps around Western franchises. We wrap up with a big-picture discussion on the future of major franchises — Marvel, Star Wars, Doctor Who, and whether audiences are finally rejecting safe, recycled storytelling.
Jujutsu Kaisen was primed for a massive comeback when it returned for its third season earlier this January, and now that its first four episodes have aired, it's clear that Gege Akutami's beloved franchise has set a new bar for the shonen anime genre. Maki Zenin has pushed JJK into bloody new territory, putting the entire anime world on notice in the process.
Santo, Myles, and the crew are back for another Open Dojo! This week we're breaking down one of the most insane anime episodes of 2026 — Maki's complete demolition of the Zenin Clan in Jujutsu Kaisen. Was it a 10/10? We debate the animation quality, the Kill Bill vibes, and whether this tops everything we've seen this year. But first, we settle the score on the Random vs. Lani debate: Is Apothecary Diaries underappreciated? We dig into why romance anime struggles to break through with casual fans, even when Crunchyroll is pushing it hard. Plus, we put some respect on Uma Musume (Pretty Derby) — trust us, it hits different. The football talk gets a little out of hand (Miami vs. Indiana, Notre Dame slander, the Mendoza brothers), but we always bring it back to the anime.Topics Covered:JJK Maki vs. Zenin Clan episode breakdownApothecary Diaries: Underrated or properly appreciated? Why romance anime doesn't move numbersUma Musume recommendationCollege Football Playoff chaosJoin the conversation: Hit up our Discord, follow us on all platforms, and support us on Patreon!#JujutsuKaisen #MakiZenin #ApothecaryDiaries #AnimeReview #BlackSenseiSociety #OpenDojo #AnimePodcasthttps://linktr.ee/blacksenseisociety

Kill Bill was originally intended to be one movie and after many years of speculation, the film was finally given a wide release with the title Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. This is one of Kevin's all-time favorites, and he was able to catch the nearly five-hour presentation during its limited release last month. Danny gave Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 rewatches, so Kevin filled him in on the changes made for this release. The two reminisce over this classic, which is driven by a perfect performance by Uma Thurman and the brilliant imagination of the most annoying human being on earth, Quentin Tarantino.
