Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2022 4:01

East West Hurricane

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2020 3:30

Welcome to East West Hurricane! 🌪We update you on the most essential news from Asia in tech, media, and business—the things you need to know that you probably haven’t heard in Western media.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram! ⚡️India’s Ban of Chinese Apps Goes One Step FurtherAfter banning 59 Chinese Mobile apps last month, the Indian government has gone one step further by announcing a new list of Chinese mobile apps to be banned. This week, China’s largest search engine Baidu and social media platform Weibo were blocked and removed from app stores in India. This brings the total number of banned Chinese apps to 106. The first list of 59 banned Chinese apps came out on June 29, then a second list of 47 Chinese apps came out on July 27. The actual delisting and blocking of apps has been staggered over the last two months. We can expect this kind of government policy to continue so long as political tensions remain high between China and India.East West Trends = Mukbang 🍲Have you heard of Mukbang? It’s a popular online trend where people record videos of themselves eating large quantities of food. Mukbang first began in Korea, where the word translates into ‘eating broadcast’ and has grown into a huge global phenomenon over the last few years. The most viewed ‘Mukbang’ video on Youtube has over 400 Million views and is of two young Korean girls eating a variety of food dishes.Mukbang performers are a new type of food influencer. They’re geared towards a modern need - the videos generally target young, single people who live alone and are looking for companionship. Mukbangers use livestreams to showcase their eating and often promote food products during their shows. This mini-documentary from Technode shows the life of a professional Mukbang influencer in China who has ten million fans and several partnerships with major food brands. While Mukbang is now more widespread in the West amongst food influencers, the trend was definitely born in the East. And whenever you have a type of content that generates an audience of millions, people can always find ways to monetise the millions of eyeballs. Tencent to Create New Streaming Giant Through Merger 🎞Tencent is leading discussions to merge Huya and Douyu, two of China’s largest video game streaming platforms. Tencent currently owns a 37% stake in Huya and 38% of Douyu. Combining Huya and Douyu would create a streaming company with 300 million combined users and $10 Billion in market value. So having a Huya-Douyu merger, which is the equivalent of creating a Chinese Twitch, would allow Tencent to strengthen their position in the world of video.Tencent is the leading Chinese company when it comes to entertainment, with the largest investment in gaming (Riot Games, Epic Games, Supercell, etc.), social media (WeChat), and music (Warner, Universal, Spotify, etc.). One of their biggest competitors is Bytedance, the company that owns Douyin (TikTok’s Chinese equivalent). In the quest for the attention of Chinese consumers looking for entertainment, Bytedance apps are Tencent’s biggest competitor. A merger to create a streaming giant between Huya and Douyu would be a chance for Tencent to fight back against their rival Bytedance. This is a public episode. Reflexión diaria del Evangelio por el P. Luis Zazano

Santa Marta. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/misioneros-digitales-catlicos/support

Welcome to East West Hurricane! 🌪We update you on the most essential news from Asia in tech, media, and business—the things you need to know that you probably haven’t heard in Western media.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram! ⚡️Kuaishou and Tencent are Latest Livestreaming Darlings 👾Kuaishou, the Chinese short-form mobile video app, has revealed their latest data around active users and engagement. They announced that they gained 70 Million more daily active users in the first half of 2020. At the end of last year, Kauishou only had 100 Million users, meaning the company has grown 70% over six months. One of the main reasons people use Kuaishou is for livestreaming, which furthers the narrative that livestreaming is truly exploding this year because of the coronavirus. Kuaishou’s biggest rival is likely Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok owned by same parent company Bytedance. Douyin and other rivals like Douyu, Huya, and Joyy also experienced strong growth this year.Tencent, the Chinese tech giant that is technically the world’s largest gaming company, has been beta testing a gaming livestreaming platform called Trovo Live. This is seen as a direct competitor to the Amazon-owned livestreaming platform Twitch. Trovo also announced a $30 Million partnership fund this month to help support creators on their platform. It’s an interesting investment for Tencent, as they are also investors in Douyu and Huya. In recent weeks, Microsoft has shut down their gaming livestreaming platform Mixer and Twitch has been hit by several sexual harassment allegations. Facebook Gaming has benefitted the most from these developments with creators migrating to their platform instead. So Livestreaming, whether for e-commerce, gaming or anything else, continues to grow.Premier League Matches Taken Down in China ⚽️The final match of the English Premier League on July 22 between Liverpool and Chelsea was taken off CCTV, China’s largest state-run broadcaster. The match was demoted to a lesser known channel and it’s unclear whether future Premier League matches will still be shown on CCTV. This likely results from the UK government’s recent decision to ban Huawei from building 5G infrastructure as part of the ongoing trade war.In terms of media rights, China is the Premier League’s second largest international market and a major strategic priority. The deal between the Premier League and their Chinese broadcast partner is worth $700 Million over a three-year period. There is a lot of hype for all sports leagues, especially European football leagues, to see China as their most valuable, under-tapped market. While foreign leagues can put together detailed and ambitious plans for China, political machination always have to be considered. Just ask the NBA. The Opportunity for Indian Family Offices 🏦After the Indian government’s recent bans of Chinese apps and new regulations on foreign investment, many Chinese investors are unsure how to proceed in the Indian market. In this vacuum, Indian family offices will play a key role. A report found that India had 150,000 ultra-high net worth (UHNW) families in 2018 with a cumulative net worth of $2 Trillion. That number is expected to rise to 400,000 families with a cumulative net worth of $5 Trillion by 2025. Family offices are usually professionally run investment funds set up to manage a family’s wealth. Across the world, family offices have been getting more interested in tech startup investments and this KrAsia article interviews several Indian investors for their first hand perspective on the topic. Family offices have historically stuck to more traditional investments like real estate until a 2012 regulation allowed Indian private equity and venture capital to raise funds more easily from Indian investors. This paired with the maturing Indian tech ecosystem and now the tensions with China leaves a major opportunity for family offices to make more direct investments into the new high-risk/high-reward ‘asset class’ of tech startups. No matter where the money is coming from, this is good news for any Indian startup knowing that their pool of potential investors is increasing. This is a public episode. Following high school Andrew moved to Melbourne to study business and media at Swinburne University where he completed his Bachelors degree.  While at Swinburne he completed a semester abroad at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. At university Andrew was very active, leading international student excursions, working at the University gym, playing Football, tennis and in his final year setting up a small, yet profitable import and retail business. Andrew finished his studies with the Swinburne Chancellor Award for most outstanding entrepreneur with a $10,000 award and participated in a global technology summit in Singapore and Shanghai. It was on this trip which transformed Andrew's view on the world and inspired the passion to build a career in Asia. With studies complete, Andrew began working part time for a global experiential marketing company Jack Morton. Worldwide, where Andrew supported on business development while also continuing to manage the retail business. In 2005 Andrew sold the retail business, gave notice at Jack Morton and headed on a solo back-packing adventure around the world. He visited North America, Europe and Asia and developed a passion for travel. Upon returning to Australia, no job, no business - Andrew decided he would explore setting up a company in Shanghai in media and publishing. After 18 months of travel to China, 100's of meetings with senior business owners and expatriates in the region he agreed to purchase a small little known media consulting business Mailman Ltd. In 2007, as the new CEO of Mailman, Andrew moved to Shanghai to begin his next chapter. The company had 4 staff, was losing money, yet Andrew was optimistic he could turn it around. After several years of trial and error, as Andrew and his new team developed capabilities in digital marketing with a focus on sports. Andrew repositioned the company, refined the brand and began a years long strategy to build credibility with the world's leading sports organisations. By 2016, Mailman was considered the leader across China, serving many of the worlds most iconic sports organisations including the NFL, UFC, Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronalda, Manchester United and more. In early 2017 the company raised over US$25m from leading Chinese investors Yao Captial, Kaixin Capital, and WeCapital. With this capital the group continued to grow services, product lines and expansion geographically. In 2018, Mailman acquired Seven League, at the time Europes leading sports digital consultancy. With this acquisition the group had a strong footprint across Asia and Europe.  Now, in 2020 Mailman is the world's leading sports digital consultancy and agency. With over 200 staff across Europe, China, USA and Asia, the group serves over 100 international sporting organisations, athletes and teams across 54 global markets now including Chelsea FC, FIFA, NBA, Los Angeles Lakers, Juventus FC and more. Andrew is considered one of the top 40 digital people in Asia, won multiple awards in entrepreneurship and innovation. He has appeared in Bloomberg, Fox, CNN, Fast Company, and Forbes and is widely recognised as a pioneer in the sports and digital industries in China and APAC. ----------------------------------------------- If you are enjoying the Sports Entrepreneurs Podcast (SEP) series, check out our Sports Entrepreneurs Mastermind (SEM) sessions too. Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. It's a good week here at Equity HQ because our two co-hosts are both back at the same time! Kate Clark and Alex Wilhelm, after each of them taking some time off, led the show today, digging into a wealth of news and happenings. Here's a quick rundown of what happened on the show this week! Postmates is still working on its IPO! Despite some reports indicating that the popular on-demand delivery company was talking to rival players about a possible sale, the company's CEO said this week that his firm is still looking to go public. (It's also picking up money this year, and talent.) Selfishly we love this, as we want to read its S-1 and see its numbers, something that wouldn't happen if it wound up subsumed into a larger company. Say, Uber for example. DouYu priced its IPO at the low-end of its range, but the offering did add lots of new capital to its coffers. Not every IPO raises its range and prices above the heightened interval, DouYu reminds us. But the company's debut is yet another China-based unicorn going public on the U.S. markets, so we had no choice but to pay attention to the streaming and esports-themed company. Recall that Huya, a similar company, went public previously (more here). CrowdStrike's first earnings report was a success. The cybersecurity business focused on endpoint protection posted revenues of $96.1 million on GAAP net losses of $26 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2020. The company, if you remember, completed a $612 million NASDAQ initial public offering in June. The next unicorn list contains some obvious companies (Rothy's, Next Trucking, etc.) and some surprise entries (Lattice?). 100 Thieves has lots of new money, and esports is cool. That's a quick summary, but in detail, the firm added a $35 million Series B to its accounts less than a year after it raised a $25 million Series A. When a firm raises an extra round that quickly, it usually means things are going well. Patreon raised a big new round. You're all familiar with Patreon, a platform that supports creators. Can a pivot toward SaaS accelerate its path toward a billion-dollar valuation? We think so. Substack, a plucky favorite of the journalist scene, has fresh capital! Because both Alex and Kate are authors of their very own newsletters (yes, they have a podcast too, sorry), they had plenty of thoughts about this one. Next week Kate and Alex are back and we may even have a special guest back with us. So make sure you are subscribed, and we'll be right back in just seven days.

In Episode 43 of TechBuzz China, co-hosts Ying-Ying Lu and Rui Ma dive into the world of gaming livestreaming, which is a pretty big industry in China. Specifically, our co-hosts focus primarily on two companies: Douyu and Panda.TV, the former of which has just filed to go public on the NYSE at a valuation of $500 million; and the latter of which officially shut down on March 30 of this year. Notably, these and several other players mentioned in today's episode all share(d) Tencent as a shareholder-- not a surprise, since gaming is in Tencent's lifeblood. Our co-hosts, while not both gamers, both acknowledge that the topic of today's episode is interesting because it is one of the most global ones out there, with plenty of opportunities for cross-border capital. Rui and Ying-Ying begin by launching into the history of the industry, and by giving some topline stats about the current game-centric livestreaming platforms in China. They share that while Douyu claims to be #1, and while it has more users than Huya, Huya is about 25 percent larger by revenue-- and was profitable last year, unlike the loss-making Douyu. They continue by explaining the critical roles that platforms YY and ACFun have played; and tell the founding story of Douyu. Listen to find out: Why was 2014 considered a good year for Chinese esports in general? What are the synergies between the US-based Twitch and some of these domestic platforms? What has been the role of Wang Sicong, known in China as the People's Husband due to his status as the country's most eligible bachelor, in pushing the industry forward? What are the core competencies of any gaming livestreaming platform, and how well has each of these players performed in these areas? On which of these competencies was Panda.TV beat out by Huya and Douyu? What strategies are existing platforms experimenting with going forward, and which of these strategies do Rui and Ying-Ying think are sustainable? As a reminder, listeners unfamiliar with livestreaming in China should check out our Episode 7, How to Win Fans and Influence Losers. As always, you can find these stories and more at pandaily.com. Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This week Kate Clark and Alex Wilhelm dug into the latest, namely big news on the fund front from folks you know, two China-based companies going public on domestic exchanges, and what's next in the long-running sagas of getting Uber and Slack public.First up Kate talked us through the latest at Kleiner Perkins and Mary Meeker's new growth fund, called Bond Capital. Alex has some more great context on that here, for interested parties, Kate has more here.Next, we turned to the F-1 filings of Luckin Coffee and DouYu, two China-based companies joining the list of firms from the country that have chosen to go public here in the United States. With Luckin's filing, we have a fascinating look into the costs of building a hyper-growth company; as you can imagine, Luckin running pretty steep deficits, but adding revenue incredibly quickly on a year-over-year basis. DouYo is fascinating for a different reason, namely that it only recently began generating gross profit. And in 2018, when it did begin to create some margin to cover its operating costs, it didn't make much.DouYu works in the live streaming and esports worlds, places where Twitch and Huya (another China-based company that went public in the States) have found success. Finally, we had two domestic public offerings to dig into. Slack, an exit we've long anticipated, is supposed to drop its S-1 today. If that's the case Alex and Kate will be back at their mics to bring you the highlights from that filing. And then there's Uber.To cap off a fun show, we chatted through the impending Uber debut. We expect the company to set a price range tomorrow, but if early reports are correct, the firm could be sandbagging a bit in hopes of raising its price next week. Lyft reports earnings on May 7, giving Uber a somewhat tight window to jump through if it wants to control its own narrative. (If Lyft's earnings fall short, for example, and Uber hasn't gone public by that point, it could be forced to lower its own pricing.)That's all we got for now. We'll probably be back later today with an Equity shot. Stay cool!

Listen to find out: Why was 2014 considered a good year for Chinese esports in general? What are the synergies between the U.S.-based Twitch and some of these domestic platforms? What has been the role of Wang Sicong, known in China as the People’s Husband due to his status as the country’s most eligible bachelor, in pushing the industry forward? What are the core competencies of any gaming live-streaming platform, and how well has each of these players performed in these areas? On which of these competencies was Panda.TV beaten by Huya and Douyu? What strategies are existing platforms experimenting with going forward, and which of these strategies do Rui and Ying-Ying think are sustainable? 8: Future of Twitch & the Importance of Streamer Tools w/ Peter Yang, Sr Product Manager at Twitch

Today my guest is Peter Yang, Senior Product Manager at Twitch. Peter has been in the Western live streaming industry for more than four years, starting out at Facebook working on Facebook live, then jumping over to Twitter where he helped develop Periscope after Twitter had acquired it. Most recently he has joined Twitch, where he works specifically to develop tools for streamers (or creators as he calls them) to improve their streaming experience, help them grow their followings, and monetize better. We start out our conversation talking about some of Peter’s opinions on the Western live streaming industry, it’s differences with China, the future of the Twitch IRL category and the potential for the audio only live streaming vertical. Then we dive into his role at Twitch and discuss some of the specific products that he has worked on including Raids, Achievements, and Squad Streaming. There are a couple terms that Peter uses quite a bit that you may not be familiar with. The first one is IRL, which stands for “in real life”. Video game live streaming is the main type of streaming content on Twitch and anything outside of that such as painting, dancing, a talk show, etc. is referred to as IRL content. The second is Subs, which is simply an abbreviation for subscriptions. As we discuss in the interview, subscriptions are one of the ways that Twitch streamers can monetize their streams. viewers are able to pay a small fee to Subscribe to a Twitch streamer’s channel. This unlocks special privileges for them and the streamer earns money from each subscription. The last one is Emotes, which are essentially emojis, stickers, and gifs used in the Twitch viewer chats. As Peter explains in the interview, the vast majority of Twitch emotes are what's known as subscription emotes. Fans of a particular broadcaster can unlock a bespoke set of emotes when they subscribe to that particular broadcaster. And broadcasters earn the ability to have a greater number of their own emotes by racking up more subscribers. If you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about Peter, you can find him on: Twitter @petergyang And on Medium at: https://medium.com/@peteryang About Stream Wars: This bi-weekly podcast will explore everything there is to know about the global live streaming industry, covering the latest trends from the top platforms both in China and the West (including YY, Huya, Inke, MeetMe, Twitch, Live.me, Bigo and Younow) while also addressing basic questions such as “what is livestreaming and why would anyone watch it?” Stream Wars will feature interviews with top streamers who share their tips and tricks for hosting a popular stream, what motivates them to stream, and how live streaming has impacted their lives. We’ll also talk to engineers and product developers to learn what it takes to build a popular livestreaming platform. Learn more about live streaming at: www.themeetgroup.com/blog

On today's Commexis Cast we kick off Influencer Marketing Week Day 4 with a look into brands using meme accounts in place of human influencer marketing tactics, and some are finding a better ROI than expected. For more, visit our blog: https://goo.gl/Y37haj -------------------------------------------- Sources: Lucinda Southern on Digiday: https://digiday.com/uk/better-roi-influencers-meme-accounts-attract-growing-interest-instagram/ -------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media for more! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Commexis1/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/commexis1 Twitter: https://twitter.com/Commexis --------------------------------------- Digiday's Lucinda Southern spoke to social media agency Cult LDN about campaigns their running for clients using meme accounts, in particular a campaign for streaming service Huya. Cult LDN is using meme accounts centered around "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" to push Huya's brand, labeling each meme with a Huya logo at the bottom and copy encouraging using the site. Southern spoke to CEO of influencer platform Fanbytes, Tim Armoo, who said, “For 1 million followers, you could be paying $15,000 to a human influencer, and for 1 million followers on a meme account you'd be paying about $1,000." Some of the benefits of using a meme account as opposed to a human influencer is the flexibility of messaging. After all, most influencers have a particular style or voice to their content, while meme accounts can be much more freeform. However, that also opens up potential brand safety issues. It's easier to tell what a particular influencer might do or talk about, but a meme account could share an unexpectedly controversial meme. In addition, Rebekah, Josh, and I aren't 100% certain on how much better using a meme account is, particularly when building trust and authenticity with an audience. While the content meme pages post are often highly engaging and relatable, without an individual as the "face" of the account it becomes difficult for users to relate to. Furthermore, the increased ROI isn't surprising. When a meme account only costs $1,000 for a million followers, the requirements for a return is much lower than when spending $15,000 for a human influencer. Like I wrote about on Tuesday, meme accounts could be helpful for small businesses in the same way micro-influencers are, but I wouldn't go all in just yet. Ultimately, it's up to your marketing team to do the due diligence of ensuring a quality influencer, whether that be a human or a meme account. Today's cast: Rebekah Milsted (Commexis Social Media Manager), Josh Lyons (Commexis Social Media Intern), and Matthew McGrorty (Commexis Videographer/Podcaster).
