Hosted by Andrew Quinn, Darren Mooney and Jess Dunne, this week with special guest Peter McGann, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This week, Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant. The colony ship Covenant is on its way to a new home world when a freak accident knocks the ship off course. However, while conducting repairs, the crew pick up a strange distress call from an alien planet that seems too good to be true. Seeing a potential opportunity, the crew decide to explore this strange new world. There, they find horrors beyond imagining. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
We explore the wild universe of the Alien franchise as we confront its latest installment Alien: Romulus (2024) directed by Fede Alvarez. We briefly talk about Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), Alien Resurrection (1997), AVP (2004), AVP:R (2007), Prometheus (2012), and Alien: Covenant (2017) before we ascend the sacred Burbank 16 steps to watch this movie in IMAX. We were pleasantly surprised at this interquel, which takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). It stars a younger group of actors this time including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Facehuggers and chestbursters abound! But let Ian Holm rest in peace!
Today on the 5: In a recent interview in The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott suggested that Alien: Covenant would be a prime candidate for a sequel. Based on the wonderful fanedit I've seen that blends that film and Prometheus together, I'm all for it!
This week - excitement at the return of Ridley Scott as our Alien adventure takes us up to 2012's origin story, Prometheus. Can it live up to Scott's spectacular original? Or is it actually quite a lot like Alien Vs Predator? To paraphrase Lawrence of Arabia, "Certainly it's bad... the trick is not minding that it's bad".Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! We have finally arrived at the primary reason we chose to march through the Alien franchise this spooky season (AHHHHH). As we've made our way through #halloweylanyutani, we've had the 2024 release of the latest installment in our minds. So now, after all the facehugging, chestbursting, and j-j-j-j-jaw-dropping conversations, we have finally arrived at ALIEN: ROMULUS.We sit down with two old friends, Blake Collier and Andy Whitfield, while all nestled together in a cabin in the California mountains to discuss why this film seems to have successfully reinvigorated the franchise 7 years after Alien: Covenant, what works and doesn't about this return to form, and the compelling way this particular entry explores our relationship with our technological and artificial companions. It's an earnest and thoughtful conversation and we really hope you enjoy it!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Join us as we continue our journey through the Alien series with Alien 3. David Fincher's 1992 film is dark and divisive. Following a difficult production, the film reviewed badly and disappointed fans of the more cohesive Alien and Aliens. Prometheus was released in Summer of 2012 and sparked both box office revenue and feverous debate. What once was thought to be a single Alien prequel was then on the track to being a "trilogy" of installments. It took five years and almost as many screenwriters before we would return to the world established in 1979. Ridley Scott was back in the director's chair for Alien: Covenant, but it was an underachiever with audiences and seemingly failed to bring in viewers the same way it's predecessor had. Some people, one of who appears on this podcast, even swore he'd never watch it again. Has time fared any better to an installment that seemingly won't be followed upon? For those answers and our review of Alien: Romulus next week, stick around for our retrospective!

This week we feature our second Redux episode in the Alien Franchise run for Spooky Season (AHHHHH) #Halloweylanyutani. Redux episodes feature films we've covered on the show before but with fresh takes, new voices, and lots of renewed perspectives. This time around we're joined by friends of the show Vera Goudie and Matt Ruff to unpack the often frustrating specifics of ALIEN: COVENANT. Following the more polarizing response to Prometheus, Alien: Covenant feels like a deliberate correction -- perhaps an overcorrection -- away from the more thematic, existential questions the franchise was posing to get back to more xenomorphic carnage. The result is a film that abounds in wasted potential, though not without its moments. Also featuring a Patron only segment with our final Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode for this year, this is a hearty, lively, and thoughtful discussion we really hope you enjoy!Patron Only Segment: The Simpsons, Treehouse of Horror XV5:48 - ALIEN: COVENANTSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Nearing the end of our Alien franchise coverage! This week is a polarizing one, even within the pod family.
After taking a detour into Beetlejuice land, The Three Men And A Retrospective Podcast returns to the Alien franchise discussing a film that, well, needs to be discussed. Director Ridley Scott had always wanted to return to the franchise that put him on the map. But after Fox decided to move forward with the Alien vs Predator films, it would seem he was permanently soured on it. Five years after Aliens vs Predator Requiem, Scott's desire was reinvigorated. Bringing together a cast that included Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender, among others, Scott put Prometheus out in the summer of 2012. At least one member of this podcast was really looking forward to it, and while the film ended up making a lot of money, it seemed to be lost amongst a ton of mixed reviews and discussions of what Scott actually wanted to make. Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they add to that discussion recording a review Garrett has wanted to do since they started this podcast. And be sure to return next week, as Adam returns to territory he swore he would never return to. That of Alien Covenant. Also, keep a lookout for a special Halloween review that returns to territory the boys have covered before. What is it? Stay tuned

What's New: Kon: I Saw The TV Glow (Max) Tyler: XCOM 2 (iPad), Communion (Tubi, Prime Video, Peacock)
Dave, Devan and Michael head to the land down under, where they enter a mysterious lab and use the black goo to create all sorts of friendly death machines such as the Koalahugger, the Xenoroo, and the Proto-Huntsman Spiderpede while they interview the legendary Australian concept artist, creature designer, and filmmaker Dane Hallett. Dane talks about how he got started in the industry and the experiences he's had working on such films as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Mad Max: Fury Road, Alien: Covenant, and Alien: Romulus. He also talks about what inspires his work and the gratitude he feels getting to work with some of the best filmmakers in the industry, including George Miller, Ridley Scott, and Fede Alvarez. We really hope you enjoy this special episode with Dane Hallett. Thank you as always for listening! Stay frosty!
Kelsi and Trey discuss Ridley Scott's final (?) installment in the Alien franchise with 'Alien: Covenant.' This movie expands on the human hubris throughline of 'Prometheus' and is led by the very-great Michael Fassbender as David and Walter. The rest of the cast and crew help deliver this multi-genre nightmare with one of the great gore set pieces of the past decade. Kelsi and Trey explore one of the great 21st century sci-fi epics in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus.' We discuss the divisive fandom of Prometheus and 'Alien: Covenant,' the recent reclaiming of Prometheus and Covenant due to the 'Alien: Romulus' financial success, how Scott's vision of a legacy prequel actually sets a blueprint for future franchises, the power of Michael Fassbender's theater kid performance as David, the parallel of corporate and religious zealotry between Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) and Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), and, of course, we explore the existential questions of life. Be prepared for a ~4 hour podcast with lots of heavy conversations and fun 'Alien' lore debates! The familiar threats of the Alien franchise — namely xenomorphs and the Weyland-Yutani Corporation — take on new forms in Alien: Romulus. Josh, JR., and Sarah discuss how this installment fits with the other films, as well as what it might have to say about sin — both original and chosen. Oh, and JR. defends THAT choice involving a “new” synthetic.

Kelsi and Trey discuss the legacy of the 'Alien' franchise while exploring Fede Álvarez's disappointing 'Alien: Romulus.' Outside of a few notable set pieces, and the Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson performances, we're left surprised by this unoriginal, fan-service-heavy, mutation of Romulus' other Alien predecessors, such as Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant (which are much, much more conceptually interesting and deeply angry horror movies).
