"I do believe that literature is a very important source of knowledge complementary to history, epigraphy and archaeology. It is not easy to read drama at the best of times. It is even more difficult to read Sanskrit drama because it is quite out of the ordinary! But there is a lot of timelessness in these plays, however strange they may seem with their tigers, elephants and tantriks! The human elements are the ones we still completely recognize - love, jealousy and ambition. We haven't changed; we are laughing at the same things that people 2000 years ago were laughing at! One of the criteria for choosing the plays was that all the great playwrights had to be represented. And I didn't want to use plays based on the Ramayana and the Mahabharata because we already know those stories. This is a book about introducing different narratives to a lay public. Also, I wanted people to be aware that the millennium of classical Sanskrit drama does not come out of a Hindu universe alone. It comes out of a universe of political diversity, cultural diversity, religious diversity. But it's true that it is also a common universe however much people might have different ideologies and different religions; there are social mores that hold them all together" - Arshia Sattar, author, Vasanta; Stories from Sanskrit Plays talks to Manjula Narayan on the Books & Authors podcast about ancient plays like Shudraka's Mricchakatika ( The Little Clay Cart), Mahendravarman's The Holy Man and the Courtesan, and Harsha's Nagananda, among others, that continue to appeal to us

Sacred Substances: Superstition or Revelation?

Sometimes at Tibetan Buddhist teachings or Tantric Initiations, attendees receive an envelop filled with sacred substances. Today we are joined by Dr. James Gentry to discuss the history, function and efficacy of one of the most famous substances—Mani pills. These pills are made through the process of meditation by special Buddhist Yogis and Yoginis, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So what are they and why should we care?   James Gentry is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University's School of Humanities and Sciences. He specializes in Tibetan Buddhism, with particular focus on the literature and history of its Tantric traditions. He is the author of Power Objects in Tibetan Buddhism: The Life, Writings, and Legacy of Sokdokpa Lodrö Gyeltsen, which examines the roles of Tantric material and sensory objects in the lives and institutions of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhists. James's research ranges across Tibetan and Himalayan intellectual history, material culture, contemplative and ritual practice, and scriptural translation, revelation, and canonicity, from the Tibetan imperial period to the present. His current projects include a study of the reception in Tibet from the 9th century to the present of the “Five Protectors” (Pañcarakṣā)—a set of five Indian Tantric Buddhist texts that have been among the most popular scriptures used for pragmatic purposes throughout the Buddhist world. James is also doing a study of a comprehensive literary treatment of Himalayan religious material culture: a 20th century compilation entitled A Treatise on the Paraphernalia and Musical Instruments of the Old School of Secret Mantra. His work on this compilation is directed toward the creation of a multimedia encyclopedia of Tibetan Buddhist material culture for use among scholars, teachers, and students of Asian religions.   Before joining Stanford, James was on the faculty of the University of Virginia. He has also taught at Rangjung Yeshe Institute's Centre for Buddhist Studies at Kathmandu University, where he served as director of its Master of Arts program in Translation, Textual Interpretation, and Philology. He has also served as editor-in-chief of the project 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha, which aims to commission English translations of the Buddhist sūtras, tantras, and commentaries preserved in Tibetan translation and publish them in an online open-access forum 84000.com.

Yoginis having tea in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Defining self-realization can help one know how to attain and sustain higher consciousness. The difference between a self-realized teacher who can take one into unity consciousness and an inspired spiritual teacher or sage. Samadhi is a spiritual state, a union with the divine. People are fortunate if they have one taste of Samadhi. Is it possible to sustain this enlightenment and sustain it? How do we transcend the small self and merge with the True Self? Why humanity is so destructive, and is it possible to change? Is there Hope for humanity?

16 Jnana Siddha Yoginis Yoga Nidra In this Feminine Empowered Yoga Nidra we invite the 16 Jnana Siddha Yoginis into our sphere of meditation. These Yoginis are from the Shaiva Tantra Tradition of Northern India where they were a popular practice over a 1000 years ago in the Swat Valley, high in their Himalayan Mountains of Kashmir. The Yoginis are messengers of a transitional primal power, the goddess, fierce compassion for change and upliftment and actually beyond the grasp of the conceptual mind. They are related to the elements and all the guises of our being. The Jnana Siddha Yoginis Practice help us recognize our own energies to push us through our blockages, samsara's, patterns, or issues. They are a source of our ability to love ourselves more deeply and feel the preciousness of our lives. Intriguing temples dedicated to the worship of #yoginis  , group #deities  symbolising the sacred feminine force, are scattered all over Central and Eastern India, but remained largely unknown and unstudied by scholars till mid-20th century. Even today the beliefs and practices of those who worshiped in these temples remain steeped in mystery. Who built these temples? Why were they hidden away in forests and deserted areas? Why do they diverge so drastically from the Indian architectural norms? For what sort of powers were the Yoginis worshipped? Is it true that the  rituals involved alcohol, blood, and corpses? How prevalent were such beliefs? Were lower caste and tribal people allowed inside these temples? And finally when and why were they abandoned? To answer these and many related questions about the Yoginis we have with us one of the best scholars on this subject. Explore More at - www.argumentativeindians.comDISCLAIMER:We invite thought leaders from across the ideological spectrum.

É ambivalente nossa existência e dialética a compreensão do processo.
