With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   In This Episode:   Helping and inspiring independent retailers is my passion (and my job!), but I would be remiss if I never shared how inspiring my retailers are to ME. Their inspiration is never more apparent than when we are all together in person: talking shop, ruminating on all the things, and brainstorming through big ideas.   In this episode, I'm sharing some of my takeaways from my Level Up Mastermind Retreat in early April in Thomasville, Georgia. I'm always learning from my retailers and amazed by their ideas and this retreat was no different. There is something very inspiring about getting a group of like-minded people together who are working toward a similar goal: running a successful independent retail shop. I hope these takeaways inspire you to try something new to move the needle in your retail business.   Takeaways for Independent Retailers:   Bravery is contagious: It's important to surround yourself with people who are on your side.    Making a decision and being brave enough to stick to it when you see the needle starting to move and/or having the courage to course correct if it's not working   Collaborations & community are super hot right now: Everyone in your community has the same goal: growing and thriving in a community that supports them.   Look to your community for inspiring people: Annie Jones of The Bookshelf in Thomasville showed us that building multiple revenue streams and marketing differently works. (You can follow along with her Instagram at @bookshelftville)   Lean into others: You cannot do this alone!   I also wanted to give a quick shoutout to YOU! Thanks to your support, the podcast has reached 100,000+ downloads!    Need more? Join me and our supportive community of retailers in my Retailer's Inner Circle! There is so much to love about the Inner Circle: access to countless masterclasses on everything from inventory management to money matters, a supportive community of like-minded retailers to bounce ideas off of, a monthly playbook to track your progress and help you plan your events and promotions, and so much more. My signature private coaching community, The Retailer's Inner Circle, has helped retailers around the world build their retail business skill sets and confidence.  I am proud to have been featured in several major publications, including my own business column in What Women Create magazine. I have been privileged to be a guest on top-ranked podcasts and sought-after as a guest speaker and teacher for several brands, associations, and communities that are passionate about the success of independent retailers. According to Gartner, only 6% of Chief Sales Officers (CSOs) are extremely confident about their team's ability to meet or exceed revenue goals. This lack of confidence has a ripple effect throughout an organization, especially between the RevOps and sales teams who each believe they hold the best strategy to meet quota. Because of this, RevOps and sales teams often interact like vinegar and oil – they don't mix well and struggle to see eye-to-eye. How can we repair this relationship and encourage collaboration between the two departments? Today we're going to talk about strengthening (and in some cases repairing) the relationship between RevOps and sales teams to drive revenue and re-energize sales teams. **// Quellen & Shownotes //** - Barnum, P. T.; THE LIFE OF P.T. BARNUM; New York 1855 - Barnum, P. Okay, this episode of the Robcast is an indulgence. The Robs grabbed themselves some fish and chips and a beer and settled down for the final episode of Neighbours. Neither had watched the show in years and years and years. So they decided to record themselves watching it and talking to see if it would be at all useable. The jury is still out on that, but what the hell, we're publishing it anyway. Mainly because the audio of Mike and Jane's scenes are so lovely. Calling it a bonus episode might be stretching it though. So, take a listen if only for the pilot errors – e.g. Annie Jones plays Jane, Rob D, not Annie Harris. Also, the woman next to Holly Valance was Natalie Imbruglia… And hear Robs Daniel and Wallis react with astonishment when learning how old Ian Smith (aka Harold Bishop) is. It must be those strong antipodean genes… Normal service will be resumed with the next episode, when the Robs will board the Bullet Train and also reveal their thoughts on The Gray Man. Christine Blackburn is not only the guest for this episode, but also the gracious host as we recorded at her kitchen table in Los Feliz, California. Christine is the host of the long-running and much-loved podcast, Story Worthy - and it's live show counterpart, Story Smash. 00:01:53 - Thanks for being here. We've shared a joint… you're holding a cat. No two women have been more prepared. Dawn introduces  Christine. Her podcast, Story Worthy has had over 725 episodes, running 12 years. 00:04:04 - Dawn and Christine commence fucking the history of FREAKS! Dawn asks Christine why the subject interests her and she said that it is the combination from the performers themselves of joy and laughter (sometimes) along with their deformities and apparent suffering. 00:06:04 - Dawn presents her primary source of information regarding Joseph Merrick and much of the Freak Show culture in Europe in the 1880's. The True History of the Elephant Man by Michael Howells and Peter Ford00:06:43 - We take a moment to discuss the word, “Freak”.  It's modern usage appears to arise in 1847 in reference to a ‘freak of nature' a malformed member of a species. Annie Jones - an early and famous 'bearded lady' - did take vocal objection to the word but seems to be an outlier. 00:08:32 - Dawn commences The Story of The Elephant man, Joseph Merrick. How he came to meet Dr. Treeves and how he became more than just a 'freak' but a cultural icon featured in theater, film, and music over many decades.00:13:57 - Dawn asks Christine: Do you think Freak Shows are good or bad? Dawn compares it as 'a living' to sex work and child labor (in so far as we discuss it today with minor athletes and artists). We can't really evaluate how 'good or bad' it is until we know how emancipated the individual who is doing it is. Are they empowered or exploited? Are they making this choice freely and being compensated fairly? ...then we may not need to worry how 'happy' they are with their work any more than we do with anyone else. 00:19:13 - There were several so-called 'freaks' who made good as freak show performers over the years leading up to Joseph Merrick, and he would have been aware that displaying himself was a fair alternative to poverty. For example:00:19:40 - Lazarus and Joannes Baptista Colloredo: Conjoined twins from 17th Century Europe.00:21:21 - Matthew Buckinger. No hands, no feet - he's known for his micograhy. 4 marriages, 14 children (at least) by 8 different women... probably because he was an excellent listener.00:22:48 - They come back to Joseph Merrick. Not only his life up to meeting Dr. Treeves (spoiler alert, there is an honest-to-goodness wicked step mother) but up to his death.  A beautiful death, if ever such a thing were possible. 00:34:49 - Having heard his story, Christine has some questions: Did they ever pitch him as psychic? No, Dawn says, what was amazing about him was his normalcy. The dichotomy of his look to his being. Tom Norman sold him as amazing to look at, and more amazing because he's just like us. BREAK00:39:53 - Dawn thanks Christine for sharing her dope and providing the 'OPP' that was so celebrated at the top of the show. She also introduces our modern-day freaks like some of the cast of American Horror Story - season 4.00:42:38 - Christine shares a story from her time at a ski resort in Colorado "back in the day." The premise is that wealth is great... but sometimes you get a perfect day for free.00:43:14 - Dawn begins her list of  FILF'S - Freaks I'd Like to Fuck (with consent, of course). The first - a featured performer from the classic 1932 film FEAKS: Schlitzie Surtese. The Pinhead. 00:46:00 - The 'Siamese' Twins. Chang and Eng Bunker.00:48:16 - Frank Lentini, the 3-legged man. He has 3 fully-functioning legs. Full set of fully-functioning genitals. “Very well-liked. Dawn and Christine discuss how that act would go. Christine is against it, Dawn thinks it could have its advantages.00:49:51 - Ella Harper, The Camel Girl. The first Merch Success Story.00:52:37 - Prince Randian - The Living Torso. No arms, no legs - he could roll a cigarette, could play virtually every instrument, spoke 5 languages, had 5 kids and was brought to the circus by PT Barnum, and made a fortune. Died a very old, wealthy man. Christine and Dawn discuss a variety of tangents before signing off, including what our particular act would be in our own sideshow...THANK YOU - listener - for tuning in and reading this far. We appreciate you and thank you and can't wait to see you next time. When we do it will be for COLONIAL COCKTAILS with RASHID GREEN one of the hosts of THE BARLESS TENDER.In the meantime...Please leave us a review! And follow us on Instagram!

I wanted to finish my last interview for season two with a strong finish. You all know me by now, I love meeting people, I love the energy a new mind can bring to any conversation, and I love seeing where that energy can go. But in today’s world, not all of us want that anymore. Not everyone wants to meet someone new, and more importantly in today’s new world, of isolation and fear, most of us have lost that special feeling, that comes with meeting someone new, and we have replaced it with a self conscious fear of that special moment.Collectively and individually we have become social pariah’s and I think that for that to change it will take someone truly special to break that mold. Someone who accepts everyone for who they are, and loves them unconditionally whether they want to participate in the occasion or not. Now you know I am that person, but as it turns out, I am not alone, and not only is there someone else, someone truly special, they have made it their life mission to break down the barriers that we have built to connect with everyone on a very different level..Today I welcome my last interview of the year, and I have saved the very best for last. Sometimes tough discussions need to be made so that we can all connect with the meaning that is buried deep within. This was first prevalent in my chat with Annie Jones, a remarkable young women who shared her story about being sexually abused by her step father and how it has empowered her to find and follow her path of helping others. But there are always different perspectives, different life lessons and different stories to be shared from the same event.Today I welcome Tracey Morris, Annie’s mother, just as brave and remarkable as her own daughter is, to tell her story. This is as difficult a conversation to listen to as it was to have, but raw it must be, because only through real dialogue can we feel the true essence of the emotional journey someone has been on, so we can get the real lesson that we need to take from it. Send us your Ask Us Anything questions via email, Direct Message, or as a comment on show notes, and we’ll feature them in a future episode! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: each of them this week centers on reading with the kiddos. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We have an eclectic mix of titles from middle grade to adult, fiction and non-, humor and serious. A bit of everything! For our deep dive this week, we are chatting about the fifth category in our 2019 Reading Challenge: a book pressed into your hands by a librarian, bookseller, or podcaster. And we’ve got a trove of resources for you if you’re stuck on this one! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week has us pressing favorites that we’ve loved for a long time but were out of sight/out of mind until someone brought them back to our attention. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down!  .  .  .  .  .  3:18 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. In Episode 14, Lindsey J. Palmer (author of Otherwise Engaged) joins me to talk about her book and her reading and writing life. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Lindsey’s interviews with Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton (from Friday Night Lights). Authors pulling from real life for their fiction…and how that impacts their real life friends and family. Lindsey’s experience writing a novel (her second, If We Lived Here) that pulled parts from her own marriage. If Lindsey is able to choose a favorite of her own books. How Lindsey manages to write novels with a full-time job and a two year old child. When Lindsey fits in reading time. Lindsey’s Go-To Authors. As an English major and Benjamin Franklin Honors Scholar, I continued devouring every book and magazine I could get my hands on and dreaming up stories (most of which didn’t take place along the Oregon Trail). Post-college, I shipped out to bucolic Vermont to teach creative writing and Pilates to high school kids at a summer arts camp. There, I picked blueberries, ran across rolling hills, and realized I was not nearly mature enough to be teaching anyone much of anything. And so I moved to Manhattan and broke into magazine publishing, starting at Glamour and then moving on to Redbook and next Self, where I was Features Editor. I worked on stories about relationships and sex, parenting, social activism, career and finances, and well-being; I interviewed the occasional V.I.P. (including Michelle Obama and both Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, a.k.a. Coach and Mrs. Taylor for Friday Night Lights fans); and I gathered material for what would eventually become my debut novel, PRETTY IN INK. After nearly a decade in publishing, I decided I was finally ready to try my hand at teaching again. So I waved goodbye to magazines and began my Master’s of English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. I took classes on Shakespeare and adolescent literature, and talked books with teenagers. I then joined the faculty of NEST+m, a Manhattan public high school, as the A.P. Literature and Creative Writing teacher, plus advisor of the literary magazine, the yearbook, and National Honor Society. During my three years of teaching, I aspired to be a slightly more down-to-earth reincarnation of my favorite fictional teacher, Miss Jean Brody. These days, I work as a scriptwriter at BrainPOP, an animated educational site for kids. I spend my days researching topics as diverse as Nuclear Fusion, Emily Dickinson, and the Tuskegee Airmen, and then translating what I’ve learned into an engaging, narrative format. My scripts get made into short films to be shown in classrooms grades 4-10, nationwide and around the world. I live in Brooklyn, NY with my husband and 1-year-old daughter. Almost a year ago now I chatted with Annie Jones, an independent bookshop owner — she owns The Bookshelf, in right in the heart of beautiful Thomasville, Georgia. In our chat, Annie shares what it was like to start off as a bookshop owner with zero business background, and the things she had to learn on the sales floor about things like managing a team, and deciding what her community liked — and didn’t like — to read. At the end of the day, Annie's focus is about how to keep the lights on doing something that she confesses is more work than she ever imagined, but wouldn’t trade for the world. I know you’ll love her. Links From This Episode:

It's been two years since my arrival here at what Annie has dubbed "The Vortex" and I seem to be moving in place. Going nowhere fast. My original intent was maybe based on my dismal outlook on things, I had decided to stay for an undetermined period and pour my money and time into fixing up this rotting husk of a trailer. In the last six weeks I have given serious thought to my situation. Friends have made an effort to get through to me, trying to raise my spirits and at the same time enlighten me as to the reality of where I stand. My friends say the things that are expected of them, like a routine that has been rehearsed many times over. I respond in like, always giving assurances that I appreciate what they are saying and that I will think about things. Then, as per the unwritten script, nothing changes.Enter Annie - she also knows her lines and is a supporting role in my theatre of life. But Annie doesn't follow the script.. She pushes me and when I respond with my worn out lines that have always worked in the past, she does not smile and leave me be like the others...Featured Artist: FOECourtesy of GarageBand.comSpecial thanks to Curtis Cross & Annie Jones for lending their voices to this show!
