Inside the VFX of Disclosure Day with Matthew Butler | Episode 560

Steven Spielberg doesn't want you to know his aliens aren't real. That's the standard Matthew Butler had to hit on Disclosure Day: total photographic believability, zero tolerance for anything that reads as fantasy, even when the story is about a supposed decades-long government cover-up of extraterrestrial contact. Butler has been Spielberg's go-to VFX supervisor for grounded, "make it real" work since Ready Player One, and before that, he was Chris's first VFX supervisor ever, on The Day After Tomorrow. Back in Episode 557, Chris and Daniel broke down Disclosure Day as fans, tracing its DNA back through Close Encounters and Sugarland Express. This time they bring on the person who actually built it, for a conversation about matching digitally-replaced train sequences to real-world reference plates, a shot count that came in smaller than planned going in, and why the biggest emotional gut-punch in the movie has almost nothing to do with visual effects at all. Butler walks through how Spielberg directs VFX without ever really discussing VFX, and the two of them dig into what makes his process so different: a shot list that shrank instead of ballooning, something Butler says has never happened on any other project in his career, a director who wants to solve problems himself rather than have them solved for him, and a 30-year veteran realizing mid-conversation that the AI moment VFX is living through right now feels exactly like the unsolved chaos of the 1990s. A conversation about restraint, trust, and knowing when the effects work is actually done when nobody notices it. Mentioned in this episode: Digital Domain, James Cameron, Titanic, Poltergeist, Tobe Hooper, Eric Barba, Doug Roble, Janusz Kamiński, Chris Columbus, Gremlins reboot, The Odyssey, Dune Guest links: Mattew Butler on IMDB > Matthew Butler on LinkedIn > Special thanks to our sponsor: Center Grid Virtual Studio: https://cgvirtualstudio.com/

There are spoilers ahead! For many films I'm afraid. I would especially avoid the episode until you have watched Ex-Machina (which you really really should immediately it really is phenomenal) as Jes does talk directly about the ending between 53:23 till 53:46. I have made a list of the films and books mentioned below. This is another detour episode and perhaps you're thinking I'm trying to avoid the very big task of recording 2001: A Space Odyssey content. And perhaps you're right. But I hope you enjoy this discussion. If you try to think of a futuristic city your mind may be drawn towards a real place but it could just as easily be drawn towards the great science fiction films that render our future on our screens. Films like Blade Runner, Minority Report, Fifth Element and (the granddaddy) Metropolis have all shown us what human futures could look like. Sometimes these visions are intimidating, terrifying or occausionally aspirational. These images in turn can affect and inform own understanding of what an unwritten future should be like. I have two wonderful guests to talk through the somewhat symbiotic relationship of science fiction and architecture Amy Brookes is an architect and an Associate Professor at the University of Reading. Along the way we discuss Michael Jordan, Bill Murray, Looney Tunes chaos, basketball movies, nostalgia, Ready Player One, and why modern studios still don't understand what audiences actually want from family films. We also talk about Demi's incredible career, from the beloved Punch Up The Jam podcast to his live comedy shows, and hear the unbelievable story of how a joke Letterboxd review somehow got him credited on the Space Jam: A New Legacy Wikipedia page.If you grew up with Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny and the Monstars, this one's for you.⭐ Support the show on Patreon for:Episodes 24 hours earlyAd FreeBonus ContentExclusive Polls and Updatespatreon.com/everyonesacriticpod

This week, we herald the return of Steven Spielberg and one more foray into the alien sci-fi genre with Disclosure Day. Those expecting blockbuster thrills might be a little thrown to instead receive a talky, late-style plea for empathy and the transformative power of truth. The question, however, is if it's too late. We discuss Spielberg, his recent oeuvre, and the million things he has on his mind with Disclosure Day.

Movie Mike ranks his Top 10 Steven Spielberg movies he has seen the most. He talks about how Spielberg may be the most influential filmmaker ever, but why this ranking isn't just about "best”…it's about the movies he can't stop rewatching. From Jaws and Jurassic Park to underrated gems like Hook and Ready Player One, Mike breaks down the 10 Spielberg movies that have had the biggest impact on him and on the movies we watch today. In the Movie Review, Mike gives his thoughts on Spielberg’s new movie Disclosure Day. It’s about a meteorologist and a cybersecurity expert who find themselves at the center of a movement to expose the government's cover-up of extraterrestrial secrets. Mike shares why the movie let him down, what he feels Spielberg missed the boat on, and why Emily Blunt was the best part of the movie. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Ridley Scott’s new film The Dog Stars starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley coming out later this summer. The movie tells the story of survivors of a deadly pandemic traversing a post-apocalyptic landscape to find the origin of a mysterious radio transmission. New Episodes Every Monday! James Cameron-Wilson was intrigued but not overly excited by #1 Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's first sci-fi film since Ready Player One. Emily Blunt plays a TV meteorologist dreaming of better things who shows signs of ESP and can suddenly speak foreign languages. A spiritual companion to Close Encounters, it gets ever weirder, taking in AI, religion, quantum physics and more, but is essentially a chase movie. At #12 is Tuner, which is the best and most entertaining that generic cinema can get. Leo Woodall stars as a piano tuner with incredible sensitivity to sound who finds he has another talent. Dustin Hoffman steals every scene he's in. You can see where it's all going, but it's a most engaging film. On Amazon Prime is the horror film Over Your Dead Body about a dysfunctional couple harbouring murderous intentions. It is an 18, deservedly so, but is also very funny. Amartya, Varun, and Cris (re)convene in a divergent manel to tackle Steven Spielberg's association with science fiction. This second in a series of three episodes looks at "Minority Report", "War of the Worlds", and "Ready Player One", and how Spielberg (paired here with cinematographer Janusz Kamiński) uses them to tackle real-world politics. References to Bollywood are a must, so Tom Cruise gets compared to John Abraham at some point, do not ask why. The final part will cover "Disclosure Day" and how it exists in conversation (or not) with these texts. Bonus discussion on our recent (terrible and not so much) excursions to the theatre had to be shared, so do enjoy that as well.MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL 3 MOVIESTIME CODESIntro (& Recent Theatrical Experiences) - [00:00 - 11:37]"Minority Report" - [11:37 - 41:18]"War of the Worlds" - [41:18 - 01:05:04]"Ready Player One" - [01:05:04 - 01:35:55]Outro - [01:35:55 - 01:37:05]Do hit 'Follow' on Spotify if you haven't already to help the podcast reach more people!Follow our Instagram page: https://instagram.com/queenisdead.filmpodcast.You can follow us on Letterboxd at -CRIS: https://letterboxd.com/crislim/.VARUN: https://letterboxd.com/varunoakbhakay/.AMARTYA: https://letterboxd.com/amartya/.

What happens if the game really is better than real life?In this episode I dive into 'Ready Player One' by Ernest Cline and explore whether a virtual paradise can outshine the messy real world. I outline the OASIS, the 80s-saturated Easter egg hunt and the Gunter vs corporate showdown then share why the novel's early gritty realism hooked me but later lost its footing as coincidences piled up and the real world became improbably rosy. While the tech flourishes feel contemporary and the ride is undeniably fun (especially for gaming and 80s pop-culture tragics) the lack of deeper philosophical bite kept it from being more than entertaining sci‑fi for me. I touch on Cline's screenwriter sensibilities and how the book's cinematic qualities likely helped its rapid path to film. Hugonauts: The Best Sci Fi Books of All Time

In this episode of the Hugonauts we're breaking down what truly defines great Young Adult fiction and answering the ultimate question: do these books actually hold up when you read them for the first time as an adult? We look at the core guidelines of YA literature—from exploring the human condition through a young protagonist's eyes to (ideally) teaching profound stuff that resonates beyond teenhood.  We count down the absolute best YA sci-fi books and YA fantasy recommendations. We dive into legendary dystopian hits like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, masterclass sci-fi like Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and Red Rising by Pierce Brown, and classic fantasy staples like Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass, and C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia. But we don't just look at the masterpieces.  We also separate the true YA novels from books that are actually meant for middle-grade kids (like The Giver, Redwall, and The Phantom Tollbooth). Finally, we tackle the controversial "duds" of the genre. Why are massive bestsellers like The Maze Runner, Divergent, and Scythe so incredibly popular, and why did they fall totally flat for us? Grab your reading list and let's find out which books are actually worth your time!  No spoilers anywhere in this episode. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Gabe Rivas Gomez, the writer of the visually stunning and very moving new play Level Up! which is about a trans tween named Desi whose quest to be who she really is takes her into a spectacular and dangerous video game world. Gabe talks about where the original inspiration came from, finding the trans actress to play Desi, Mathias Brinda, several workshop productions ago and watching her grow up before his eyes and the technical challenges of trying to depict a video game on stage. He also talks about producing this show at a time when trans youth are under attack and what the reactions from audiences have been like so far. Other topics include: Gabe's career as a college professor and whether today's kids really are alright, taking inspiration from the book Ready Player One, what his own kids think of the show, his obsession with Lego and why some scenes just have to hurt. https://www.latinotheaterco.org/levelup

In our final entry in our "movies about video games that aren't based on video games" we take a look at the be all and end all entry defined by those very specific parametres, 2018's Ready Player One. In a future bogged down in nostelgia to the detriment of a crumbling society it's up to a group of plucky internet savy individuals to unlock the mystery of the Oasis, a Virtual Reality space where your wildest dreams can come true. If your wildiest dreams are like, walking around and Batman is there or the Delorian or whatever. Probably the most unusual choice for Steven Spielberg to direct but hey, he certainly threw a lot of stuff in it.
