In this empowering episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik welcomes Bernice McDonald, coach, speaker, and author of Brave Enough to Be Myself. Together, they explore the often-unspoken fears that hold us back from becoming who we truly are. Bernice shares insights from her transformative book, highlighting the concept of taking “tiny brave steps” and the power of befriending fear. She introduces listeners to the "hot air balloon" perspective—a way to rise above life's struggles and see the bigger picture—and the idea of embracing our "strange jewels," the unique gifts we often hide. This soulful conversation is a gentle yet powerful reminder that courage is about showing up every day, one small step at a time. About the Guest:Bernice McDonald is a transformational coach, speaker, and author passionate about helping women in the second half of life rediscover their courage and self-worth. With over two decades of coaching experience, she guides women through life's hardest challenges, one tiny brave step at a time. Her book Brave Enough to Be Myself is the first in her Little Books of Courage series, offering a four-week journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance. Key Takeaways: Courage is built on small, consistent actions, not grand gestures. Fear can be befriended, not battled—Bernice calls hers “Fred.” The “hot air balloon” perspective helps you rise above immediate struggles and view your life journey with clarity. “Strange jewels” are the unique traits we hide but can become our greatest strengths. Self-compassion is essential in balancing bravery without adding pressure to “fix” yourself. She has two Olympic golds and four podium finishes at the World Championships. But Caster Semenya can no longer compete in elite competition, all because of what's long defined the middle distance runner more than her athletic achievement: her gender. Semenya has higher testosterone levels than average women, which has made her a lightning rod in conversations around gender in sports for years. Now, she's telling her own story in a memoir called The Race to Be Myself. She joins Piya Chattopadhyay to talk about being the subject of debate in public and how she's keeping up her fight for all women to be respected and included in sports.

This month we hear about five recent nonfiction books about nature or our culture's unfortunate responses to some aspects of nature. Christiann Gibeau, head of Troy Library's adult & reference services, suggests these items: "Bird Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Avian Lives" (Hauber, 2023); "Sins of the Shovel: Looting, Murder, and the Evolution of American Archaeology" (Morgan, 2023); "The Race to Be Myself" (Semenya, 2023); "Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia" (Manne, 2024); and "The Cancer Factory: Industrial Chemicals, Corporate Deception, and the Hidden Deaths of American Workers" (Morris, 2024). Christiann also explains how to find new books at the main branch, notes that the library is closed Saturday 5/25 and Monday 5/27 for Memorial Day weekend, announces new Saturday hours starting in June, and invites everyone to take a library survey. For more details, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. To find other libraries in New York State, see https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/#Find. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
Send us a Text Message. The Race to Be Myself is a 4 part memoire where Caster talks about:The beginning: how she grew up, how she liked to hang out with boys and play sports, and what happened in puberty. The rise: How she got into running and eventually decided to be more serious about training. She also talks about getting more serious about school because she wanted to sun with for a university where she could have access to coaches and other resources that would help her be a better runner. The awakening: Her struggles during the years of high level running and all the tests and treatments she ended up doing (and in some cases not doing) in order to be able to continue running. The redemption: The ban from competing in the female category for events from 400m to 1 mile, and what Caster did next.Mokgadi Caster Semenya, OIB, is a South African middle-distance runner and winner of two Olympic gold medals and three World Championships in the women's 800 meters. She first won gold at the World Championships in 2009 and went on to win at the 2016 Olympics and the 2017 World Championships, where she also won a bronze medal in the 1500 meters. After the doping disqualification of Mariya Savinova, she was also awarded gold medals for the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympics. Since being banned from competing in her favorite race distance (the 800 meters) due to naturally high testosterone levels, Caster ran a 5000m, got married to her wife Violet, and started a family of her own.Support the Show.Any feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. This week, we talked a bit about George's takes on Caster Semenya's book, The Race to Be Myself. We also reviewed how George ran at the Disneyland Half Marathon, and we discussed why Michelle was forced to pull out of the Houston Marathon at the last minute. Finally, building on our conversation from the last episode, we had a bit more to say about influencers.
When she was only a teenager, South African runner Caster Semenya won gold at the 2009 World Championships. But she was soon faced with intense scrutiny over her gender and testosterone levels and forced to endure intrusive questions and tests about her eligibility to compete. In her new memoir, The Race to Be Myself, Semenya opens up about having her skill and merit challenged on a global stage and choosing self-love over it all. She speaks with Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes about breaking down expectations for women athletes, and raising her own daughters with that experience in mind.
Caster Semenya was just 18-years-old when she won gold in the 800 metres at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. Her victory was controversial because the South African runner was facing questions over her gender. So much so, that she was made to take a gender test on the eve of the final. The test revealed that the teenager had been born with internal testes and no womb. It meant she had higher levels of testosterone; a hormone that increases muscle mass and strength. She has been speaking to Matt Pintus after the launch of her memoir, The Race to Be Myself.(Photo: Caster Semenya at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. Who gets to compete as a woman? And who decides whether someone is “woman enough”? When it comes to South African runner Caster Semenya, it could be the European Court of Human Rights. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been in a legal battle since 2019 with World Athletics, the global governing body for track and field, after it banned her from competing because of her naturally-occurring higher levels of testosterone. She discusses her experience, what labels get wrong and her new book A Race to Be Myself. Questions? Comments? Email us at on@voxmedia.com or find us on social media. Special Episode: This episode offers a slightly different format. We begin with an interview of a very talented young lady, Montana Tucker who, it turns out, hails from Boca Raton. Montana has an impressive list of artistic accomplishments including a career that began at 8, appearing in national commercials, as a dancer (where she won "World Hip Hop Championships") and several hit singles. She is currently promoting a "Concert 4 Kindness" presented by Marilyn & Jay Weinberg and set to be held at FAU's Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium in Boca Raton on Sunday January 15th. The proceeds from the concert will directed to the "Make a Difference Fund" to support scholarships and programs within the FAU's future Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Holocaust & Jewish Studies building. Along with College of Arts and Letters Dean Michael Horswell, we have a lively conversation about Montana's motivation for doing this concert. As a special treat, with her permission, we offer her hit, "Be Myself" at the end of our interview! I hope you enjoy this special episode.

Gabor Maté says that we choose belonging 100% of the time, over authenticity. Our self-critic keeps us ‘in check' and ‘likeable'. The part of us that feels criticised, ‘different', or struggles to connect, is the part that turns to something outside ourselves, in order to cope. So, here, I talk about the road to becoming more authentic and empowered, as a route to recovery of confidence, as well as from compulsion or codependency. If you want help with getting your confidence back, and to recover from comfort eating, join my next group: Next Comfort Eating Recovery 6-week programme - Only a couple of spaces left!Join my mailing list hereGet Control Back! At thirty-three, comedian and educator Jake Jabbour found himself living alone after a breakup with his girlfriend and burying his grandpa. His most impactful relationships ended, stripping from him his identities as a roommate, boyfriend, and grandson. Hoping to discover who he was when he wasn't himself, Jake boarded an Amtrak train with his comedy partner to perform live improv across the country, from Los Angeles to New York, examining the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of his past that landed him alone in the most crowded cities in the country. In the lineage of Chuck Klosterman's Killing Yourself to Live and John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, Training to Be Myself chronicles Jabbour's cross-country travels with an eye trained towards relationships and culture, searching for clues and connections with others that might shine a light on his own identity. Along the way, Jake lays bare his thoughts on grief, nostalgia, family, failure, comedy, education, relationships, culture, and self-acceptance. _______________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo, Lance Morgan, Natalie Freeman, & Michael Kowaleski. We had the pleasure of interviewing Montana Tucker over Zoom video! Recognized for sharing the stage with the likes of Ciara, Lil Wayne, Flo Rida to JLo, Montana is taking the industry by storm with hits of her own. Following the success of her recent singles like “Hola” & “Sunday Funday,” Montana recently dropped “DooWop' via Universal Music Group, which will be followed by “Be Myself” featuring social media mega-star Todrick Hall on May 17th! It will also be Zumba's anthem for their Pride Campaign, with each video made to the song with hashtag, #Zumba to donate $1 to It Gets Better organization. Renowned social media star & recording artist, Montana Tucker is adored not only for her music but for creating viral dances on TikTok with well-known stars, as a beauty and fashion inspiration, and as a highly respected philanthropist who uses her platform for good. Widely recognized as JLo's protégé… (even getting love from the queen herself!) Montana Tucker is no stranger to pushing the limits. Last year the social media mega-star used her platform to pave her way into the music industry – her skill in social media marketing and entrepreneurial success alone set her apart from the millions of other talented musicians out there – and drove international megastar Pitbull himself to sign her to his record label to back her music. She took 2020 to release new music, regroup, and reinvent ways to give back to a cause that is near to her heart. This year, she signed with UMG and will be releasing new music through them! #TPOS: What a year it has been. We have all struggled with something of importance over this last year... With the entire world experiencing a pandemic, social injustices, wild fires, & just unprecedented times this has been a time to reflect on life. We are consuming so much negativity on a daily basis through the internet & it’s not healthy for any of us. Especially those of us going through so much more.On top of everything, something that I’ve experienced my whole life but has been amplified this year that I’d like to discuss today. Being a person of color in a world that puts the odds against you. At a young age I realized what was important to me as a human being and that was giving back to my community. When I started TPOS @thepeopleofsacramento in 2014 as a teen with a dream of making my city, people, & self better I had to work 30x harder every day for it to actually become something of substance.Over the last nearly 7 years, we have not only built one of Northern California’s most giving organizations but one of Sacramento’s most prominent organizations. And with this comes great influence. We launched our flagship store February 22nd 2020. Shortly after this incredible day, the harassment & racist attacks began on me & everyone close to me. A women began attacking me because it was so hard for her to come to the reality that a young, brown, man was becoming an ambassador for the City but also helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local organizations. It’s to “good to be true” that I would dedicate my life to giving back because I’m brown? Or is it because I like to wear nikes? This ignorant women dedicated her entire life since February to produce lies, accusations, & fabricate this version of me to the public. Through these months I have continued to BE MYSELF, receive awards, recognition, and give back even though someone was constantly trying to bring me down on a daily basis. I’ve had a enough. I’ve had enough of the harassment, I’ve had a enough of the hate, I’ve had enough of the blatant defamation & jealously. I finally decided to speak up for myself. On this episode of TPOS. Bare with me as you hear the raw emotion of someone who has been a target of racism and hate for far too long. We are an open book & nothing will stop us from continuing to be great. In today’s rebroadcast I share the biggest lesson of my biggest gig to date – I taught a three day class at CreativeLive, about creating your best marketing plan. I completely forgot to mention how to GET that class, so here’s the link! Oh, and the lesson I learned: How to be myself. In today's episode, I'll share how the heck I figured out how to Be Myself, and how it totally changed the way I think about things. How to Be Yourself (even when you're a nervous wreck.) Get clear on what you love. Show up and be present. Decide connection matters. How are you being yourself in your business (and life?) How are you hiding yourself? The only difference between Sheryl Crow and most of us is that her life’s path took her into the rarefied air of celebrity. Along the way, the veteran singer and musician has released ten studio albums, earned nine GRAMMY Awards, and has sold an estimated 50 million albums worldwide. Following the release of her latest album Be Myself, Crow sat with host Scott Goldman to reflect on her commitment to looking at life without illusion and responding to what she finds with honesty and artistry. Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode, we are rejoined by Boston emcee Iyadonna. Artist Biography: Iyadonna is from Roxbury, MA. Starting as early as 2000, Iyadonna was writing and recording with DJ Clinton Sparks and receiving radio play across the nation. What You Think/What Did You Say produced by Clinton Sparks was a college radio success and even got some mainstream recognition. A few years later Iyadonna teamed up with another producer in California and began to write for his artist. He was so impressed he then offered Iyadonna a chance to record some music of her own. Iyadonna excepted but was soon accepted to Norfolk State University in Virginia. She would attend and stay in Virginia working as a radio personality on Hot 91FM for the next four years until she graduated in 2009. Iyadonna then moved to New York city to concentrate on her music full time. Releasing Respect in 2009, it was picked up by Music Choice, gaining fans all around the country. The Iyadonna buzz was spiking in the right direction. Iyadonna decided to stop using her writing talents for other artists but to start branching out and incorporating vocals into her music. By 2009 Iyadonna wrote and recorded Dance Floor and soon after in 2010 the very successful up tempo dance track titled Be Myself. The remix to Be Myself featured the 2 time Grammy nominated party king Fatman Scoop, again igniting Iyadonna's name even more. The song continues to be a huge success, not just the remix but the original, receiving commercial spins across the country and going strong on itunes, Amazon, and more. Since then Iyadonna has released numerous singles on itunes & Amazon, including Antidote (produced by the BAR Group), and most recently Emotions produced by Hott Scott Music. Iyadonna continues to light up stages everywhere and has performed at SOBs New York for the Zulu Nation 38th anniversary party, House Of Blues, Bum Squad Dj retreat Las Vegas, UCONN and more. IYADONNA has a NEW EP called Occupy The Industry available now! Also, the latest mixtape The SheMixes is available on-line and in hard copy if ordered. Iyadonna has worked with such artists as: Akrobatik, Reks, Dutch Rebelle, Fatman Scoop, Chubby Chub, Tashawn King, Lady Luck, Mark Merren, JV the Rap-singer, Reggie Hills, DJ Roy Barboza, E!'s Clinton Sparks and more. Now Iyadonna is preparing to release her first LP titled The Melnea Cass Project due out this fall. She is now working with DJ Power of the Zulu Nation/Cold Crush Bro's and continuing to ignite stages. Big things are in the works for Iyadonna aka Melnea Cass so please keep your ear to the streets! This is a movement hunny!
