The Book Leads – Episode 47: Andrew Beamon & From Promises To Progress: A Leadership Guide To Help Organizations Avoid Common Mishaps And Bring Their Racial Equity Aspirations To Life I recently sat down with Andrew, a Corporate Social Responsibility Professional, Author, and fellow University of Hartford Alum, to discuss his career and experiences leading up to his new book. Beyond continuing the conversation that seems to fade back into discomfort between major racist tragedies and murders, he's pushing it further so ompanies understand what they can do beyond instinctively grabbing for the low-hanging fruit of launching surface-level campaigns and reworking public perceptions. He wants them to dive deeper. These open, honest, and learning conversations are what I would love to see more of – where each person is sharing their experience and understanding. We're not always going to get it perfect, but the conversations should be equal parts honesty and patience. As for companies operating in today's society: No more lip service and facades. Do right by your people and community. Episode Highlights Examples of companies called out for racist practices and missteps; How companies can take their anti-racist responsibility seriously; His experience going to an HBCU; The difficulty he found in expressing what he was feeling after various senseless high-profile murders of black men; and The difficulty that exists in having these conversations in society. The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Andrew is, What steps are you and/or your company taking in the fight against racism? Andrew's Bio Andrew Beamon is an experienced professional in Corporate Social Responsibility, Racial Equity, Human Resource Strategy, and Economic Development.  Prior to joining a global financial institution to lead the U.S. Corporate Citizenship Colleague Engagement Programs, he worked as the Director of Field Operations for the SCORE Association, and as a Human Capital Consultant with The Gallup Organization. Andrew earned his bachelor's degree in business with a concentration in hospitality and tourism administration from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, and his master's degree in organizational psychology from the University of Hartford in Hartford, Connecticut. He completed Georgetown's Strategic Diversity & Inclusion Management Executive Certification and Boston College's Certification in Strategic Corporate Citizenship Management. Currently resides back in his hometown, Waterbury, Connecticut. Kergejõustikuteemalises taskuhäälingusaates "Staadionijutud" on sedapuhku külas kaugushüppelegend Tõnu Lepik, kes võitis tiitlivõistlustel kolm medalit ja tuli ajaloolisel Mehhiko olümpia finaalvõistlusel viiendaks. Üheks saate põhiteemaks kujunebki just too 1968. aasta olümpia, kus ameeriklane, Lepiku eakaaslane Bob Beamon parandas maailmarekordit uskumatuna näiva 55 sentimeetri võrra. Just minu viimased sammud - neid loeti maailma parimaks. Saadet juhib Karl Rinaldo.

Very often you hear this saying in the fitness world and athletic arena, “No pain, no gain”. It’s as if pain should be expected when you do exercise or undergo training for a sport and if you don’t, whatever you’re doing isn’t going to be effective. This kind of misinformation that exists in this field is one of the main reasons why injuries, particularly on the back, are prevalent among athletes. Because the truth is, the most you should feel while training is a little soreness or muscular discomfort. Today’s guest on Back Talk Doc is Jake Beamon, a physical therapy assistant at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates and avid CrossFit enthusiast. He discusses the many causes of back injuries among athletes, with one of the main reasons is a lack of understanding of the importance of core strengthening. Another is muscle asymmetry, which is often in the case in those who play golf, baseball and basketball. Injuries also occur when there is lack of warm-up or excessive non-essential training. Jake is a believer of adopting functional sports-specific training and working your body out as a whole unit, and not separating certain muscle groups. Jake also dives into how you can protect your back if you’re into athletics, or even as an ordinary person who’s into fitness programs like CrossFit. Besides strengthening your core and improving mobility, you must maintain functional body movements of hip hinging, squatting and jumping/walking/running regardless of age and fitness level. Always consult your doctor or expert before embarking on any sport or training regimen. Additionally, putting good nutrition in your body should be of priority as well. The benefits will only be seen when you incorporate a healthy balanced diet in your everyday routine. Key moments in the episodeReasons athletes tend to injure their back 06:05 The body's core muscle system 07:56 Pelvic muscles in healthy spinal movements 09:34 Characteristics of a strong core 10:26 Breathing and core stability 11:49 Effects of yoga 14:28 Sports that create the most muscle asymmetry 15:07 Excessive non-essential training 17:34 Kettlebell swings as alternatives to deadlifts 19:17 Weight training for sports 20:18 Increasing muscle bulk from weight training to prevent back injuries 21:49 Ideal exercise program for people with varying levels of fitness 31:41 Back injury prevention for golfers 32:50 How to tell you're physically fit for CrossFit 35:15 Health habits to follow 38:31 Favorite apps, books or other tools 39:20 Every episode of Back Talk Doc includes a Health Matters segment intended to provide actionable health information you can immediately put into practice in your life. In this episode of Tales from the PROS, I chat with Dewayne Beamon, who is a super flyweight professional boxer with a record of 16-1-1,11 knockouts, 6 titles, and two international titles, he is also voted twice for 2018 prospect of the year, and has recently signed with highly respected promotional group known as Zanfer Promotions who is run by highly respected Fernando Beltran. He has defeated all odds against him by joining the boxing game at age 23 and easily beating well known boxing contenders. We discuss Dewayne's journey on how he became a hugely talked about boxing prospect in the game, his struggles, and some of his achievements. Dewayne also dives into the business of boxing, his training, being a leader in his niche, and much more.    Questions Asked: So, Dewayne I have known you now for over 4 years as me and you used to train in the same boxing gyms in Raleigh. Tell everyone your story of how you joined the boxing game and came into it in your early to mid-20s? I know you had a boxing promotional company known as Stop Running Promotions when you were boxing in North Carolina, but you have made huge career switch last year, so tell me what happened before you made the transition to head to the west coast? Tell me more about your opinion of North Carolina boxing and how it's different from other states? Based on all your experience fighting and in business at the same time, do you feel that the business of boxing is corrupted? Would you ever want to jump back into the business of boxing down the road or just focus on fighting? What do you do to really prepare for some of the tough fights and how difficult is the training? What is Dewayne Beamon's plan to fight on HBO and what will it take to get there? Because it seems you are getting very close to achieving this goal and fighting for a world title. What does the future look like for Dewayne Beamon? Do you have any tips to give future boxers and entrepreneurs joining the sports industry? From initially joining the boxing game until now, what were some of your toughest struggles you had to go through and how did you overcome them?   Three How's: How do you define failure? How do you define entrepreneurship? How do you define success?   Follow Dewayne Beamon: YouTube  - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ1rn5mZW6UE3PWcRUjQ0lQ Follow Me: Podcast Website - https://www.talesfromthepros.com  Company Website - https://www.imaginovation.net  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TalesfromthePROS/  Twitter - https://twitter.com/MGeorgiou22   Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/the_mgeorgiou/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJv9pbImovknEluSLzAPTpg/featured

The monkeys are white-faced capuchins. Small things, their lean, black-furred bodies stand in stark contrast to the white tufts of their faces and shoulders. The Russians have cannons that can blast an airship apart in ten minutes and armored steam knights called kolotar, but of the many dangers I face on a warship a mile above the Black Sea, I fear the monkeys I tend most. “Do not tarry,” a man whispers behind me. “They eat meat as well, boy.” | Copyright 2018 by James Beamon. Flash Fiction: “The Banshee Behind Beamon's Bakery” by Khalidaah Muhammad-Ali (Originally published in Diabolical Plots #21.) Most nights the alley behind Beamon’s Bakery is just an alley. The street lamp bleeds piss yellow light, casting jagged shadows around the overflowing dumpster and discarded boxes. The walls are tagged with gang signs, claiming territory that was never theirs, yardage, bodies, souls, rights. Some nights a transient clears away the broken glass, the random detritus, to squat for the night. Setting up camp here has its own rewards. The warmth that seeps through the bakery walls and through brick facing chases away the chill, but not the ghosts. This is the drawback, you see. The alley is never as vacant as it may seem at first, never as lonely as one may wish. The price of physical warmth is the chilling of your soul. Khalidaah Muhammad-Ali lives in Houston, Texas, with her family. By day she works as a breast oncology nurse. At all other times, she juggles, none too successfully, the multiple other facets of her very busy life. Khaalidah has been published at or has publications upcoming in Strange Horizons, Fiyah Magazine, Diabolical Plots, and others. You can also hear her narrations at any of the four Escape Artists podcasts, Far Fetched Fables, and Strange Horizons. Khaalidah is also co-editor at PodCastle audio magazine, where she is on a mission to encourage more women and POC to submit fantasy stories. Of her alter ego, K from the planet Vega, it is rumored that she owns a time machine and knows the secret to immortality. She can be found online at khaalidah.com and on Twitter as @khaalidah. Author's note: The unjust violent death of Michael Brown at the hands of a police officer was the specific impetus for this story. I tried to imagine what his mother must’ve been feeling upon learning about her son’s death. This wasn’t difficult because I have a son as well. I tried to impart the feeling of rage and horror I, any mother, would feel upon learning that her son was taken away in such a violent horrific way. Main Story: “Gust of Wind Made by a Swinging Blade” by Molly N. Moss (Originally published in Weirdbook #32.) Again, Kinnori strained against the ropes binding him, his muscles already throbbing from exertion. Once again, the cords sliced his flesh and yielded not at all. It was dark in the hold of the guard-ship Murakumo, and a gathering chill numbed his fingers. Rolling waves conspired with exhaustion to make Kinnori's eyelids grow heavy. He shook himself and growled, “Escape or die, Shoji Kinnori.” Molly N. Moss is the pen name of a tuxedo housecat named Marlene who lives in Athens, Georgia. When Marlene got bored with being left alone all day every day, she taught herself to read fiction as a hobby. After a while she decided to try writing fiction of her own. Marlene's fiction has appeared in numerous publications, including Weird Tales, Bards & Sages Quarterly, and the anthology Dark Magic: Witches, Hackers, & Robots. About the Narrator: "The Banshee" is read by the author; see bio above. Eric Luke is the screenwriter of the Joe Dante film Explorers, which is currently in development as a remake; has written for the comic books Ghost and Wonder Woman; and wrote and directed the Not Quite Human films for Disney TV.  His current project, Interference (a meta horror audiobook about an audiobook... that kills), is a bestseller on Audible.com. His website for creative projects is Quillhammer.com.
