Welcome to Living Well with MS coffee break #37, where we are pleased to welcome OMSer and Ambassador, Dave Jackman, as our guest!  Watch this episode on our YouTube channel here. Keep reading for Dave's bio. Make sure you sign up to our newsletter to hear our latest tips and news about living a full and happy life with MS. And if you're new to Overcoming MS, visit our introductory page to find out more about how we support people with MS. Bio: Dave Jackman is a Scot living in the historical village of Falkland in Fife with his wife, Rae and their Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Dexter (named after the serial killer!) They have three children, two of whom live locally, while one lives in California. Dave was diagnosed with primary progressive MS (PPMS) in October 2011 and started following the Overcoming MS Program shortly afterwards. He is now retired from teaching and has led several Overcoming MS Retreat Reunions and Overcoming MS workshops while running a successful Airbnb studio with his wife. He is also an Overcoming MS Ambassador for Scotland – Fife. Prior to diagnosis, he was a keen runner and played cricket for over 40 years. His interests now include computers, cricket, dogs, music, home exchanging and travel. 3 key things about Dave: Exercise I have always been sporty and loved the exercise involved in playing all the various sports I have participated in. I played cricket for over 40 years and in my youth played a lot of volleyball, culminating in representing Scotland at university level. Pursuing the exercise arm of Overcoming MS for me has not been difficult. After diagnosis, I consulted a physiotherapist who worked out a specific schedule of exercises for me and I also made use of the MS Gym online so that I was constantly exercising, particularly those bits of my body which were starting to deteriorate. These days, even though walking is becoming more tiring, I walk our dog every day and love travelling and exploring new places. Nowadays, even if I can't go out for my exercise, I make use of an exercise bike and can still manage to ‘cycle' 5 miles a day. I feel it is really important that no matter your disability with MS, to manage whatever exercise you are capable of and pursue it regularly. Mindfulness Meditation and mindfulness were areas I really struggled with initially. However, I slowly got to grips with them. I joined Headspace online and have followed that for years. I feel it is really important to do your meditation. It does not have to be a long session, but it does have to be regular. Once a day suits me. I have also become much better at incorporating mindfulness into my day-to-day life. Home Exchanging My wife, Rae, and I have home exchanged for over 25 years. Initially, we saw it as a great, inexpensive and environmentally friendly way to explore the world with our three children. We love meeting the people involved and this has led us to do dog sitting whilst people were on holiday. In the past few years we have converted our garage into an Airbnb studio which has been very successful, so if you fancy a cheap few days break in Scotland... In this episode we discuss the socialisation period, what it is and what it isn't, what to do and what not to do. J.P Scott and Fuller conducted extensive research in over a period of 14 years on generations of 6 breeds of dog; Basenjis, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Shetland Sheepdogs and Fox Terriers and their crossbreeds. J.P. Scott & Fuller were the first to discover what they termed as the critical period for socialisation in 1957. Now more commonly referred to as the sensitive period for socialisation; the knowledge that Scott and Fuller gave the world is that all puppies have a well-defined neonatal, a transitional and a critical (or sensitive) period, and what happens to them during these periods shapes what kinds of dogs they grow up to be. A more recent study in 2015 by Mary Morrow et al., looked at a total of 98 purebred puppies representing 3 breeds, namely Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Yorkshire terriers, and German shepherds. The results of this study support the hypothesis that emotional and behavioural development, as well as the onset of fear-related avoidance behaviour, varies among breeds of domestic dogs. John O'Hurley is Back Co-host of NBC's Thanksgiving Day National Dog Show; actor John O'Hurley (J. Peterman on Seinfeld) is back for the 14th year to share fun stories about the dogs in his life. He'll also take a stab at pronouncing the new breed names in this year's Thanksgiving Day show. At home, John has two dogs, a Cavalier King Charles named Sadie and a Havanese named Lucy. John says that everything he knows about dogs he learned at the National Dog Show from the breeders and from walking up and down the aisles full of dogs. So when he was looking for new family members, he knew what type of dogs he wanted. John states that dogs are not trials. You should learn about the dog you are interested in and shouldn't get a dog to try it out and see if it will work. The shelters are unfortunately full of too many dogs that were trials. Listen Now Country Star Tanya Tucker Guests Musician Tanya Tucker joins the Thanksgiving celebration live from Nashville. She has a menagerie of animals and plenty of anecdotes to go around. This is the first time for her on Animal Radio…we'll be gentle. But this ain't her first rodeo. Years ago, Tanya tells us that she lost one of her Chihuahuas in the hills of Malibu, California, for 9 months. He was eventually found about 60 miles away due to a microchip. She was in Nashville when she got the call and they had an incredible reunion, with both of them going crazy! Listen Now Don't Stuff Your Pet With Thanksgiving Leftovers Thanksgiving is all about enjoying time together - family, friends, and great food. In many households the family pet may also sample a taste from the holiday table; a morsel of turkey breast for Tabby or a side of fixings for Fido. Tuned in to those enticing smells, our pets know how to manipulate us with a flutter of sad puppy dog eyes or incessant meowing. Sharing these Thanksgiving goodies with our pets can put their health in jeopardy, but many of us do it. Over 60-percent of pet owners confess to sharing their holiday meal with their pets, but that doesn't make it wise. Listen Now My Cat from Hell Animal Planet host, Jackson Galaxy is back to yap about his awesome book. Jackson and Kate (his partner in crime) will show you how to make your house cat-friendly without forsaking aesthetics. Listen Now Banning Shock Collars The Scottish government is asking residents there for their opinions on electric shock collars, used to train cats and dogs, and if they believe the collars should be banned. Wales, Sweden, Denmark and Germany have already banned shock collars, but supporters of them say they can be used successfully as a last resort - and have compared the pain inflicted to a static shock. Meanwhile, shock-collars are still legal in the United States; the usefulness is still in question. Sometimes a dog will "take the hit" if his/her drive is high. Sex in space, banning certain dog breeds, whether plants feel pain, ethical xenotransplants, and the unknown science behind curling.FULL SCRIPTLet's talk about sex in space - scientists say we should start getting busy! It's been more than 20 years since we've done experiments on vertebrate reproduction in space flight. If we're going to be doing 3 year missions to Mars, we need to know how spaceflight can affect reproduction. Radiation, gravity and stress could all have adverse side effects on our baby making, but obviously there are ethical and practical obstacles to doing experiments. For the time being, scientists are testing freeze-dried sperm from mice sent to the ISS- and so far, they're going swimmingly!Should we ban certain dog breeds? Norway just banned the breeding of Cavalier King Charles spaniels and English bulldogs. Cavaliers are susceptible to heart mitral valve disease (MVD) while Brachycephalic dog breeds, pretty much any dog with a squashed face, like bulldogs, are prone to breathing issues. Animal Welfare advocates are hoping the decision will raise awareness of quality of life issues in dog breeding in Australia, but will our government also ban these breeds? We're not sure yet, but if it means that our furry companions suffer less, it has to be a good thing, right? Let us know what you think. Can plants feel pain? This is one of the things most vegetarians or vegans get asked at least once in their life. Well don't worry- Peter Singer recently answered the question for us, and his answer may surprise you. He says that it would be foolish to exclude the possibility that plants have some type of consciousness that we don't yet know about. However, from what we know so far, they do not experience pain like vertebrates do. But Peter reasons that even if plants were as sensitive to pain as animals, it would still be better to eat them than to eat meat, purely based on the food value ratio- that is, that animals are poor converters of energy compared to plants. Come chat to Peter about this at our show by grabbing a meet and greet ticket- the link to tickets is in our bio.Curling - do you love it or hate it? It's pretty controversial, but not just for that reason. It's also controversial because physicists can't agree on the science behind it! Tribology is a branch of physics that explains why an upturned glass can slide across a table- the glass deflects to where there is LESS friction. But curling stones behave in exactly the opposite way- they deflect in the direction of STRONGER friction. Why? Scientists don't know, but they have multiple competing theories. In 2020 each theory was tested against each other, but no clear winner emerged. How bizarre!?Is it ethical to take a life to save a life? The first pig-to-human heart transplant just took place in Maryland and was a huge success, but due to Australia's quarantine laws that say we can't import live pigs, it's not going to happen here anytime soon. See, for xenotransplants to be safe, the animal needs to be bred for this purpose. We already breed animals for other reasons, like for meat, but are xenotransplants a more ethical reason for killing? Most would say YES, but would your answer change if you knew the person needing an organ transplant was an innocent child, or on the other hand, someone who had abused substances which resulted in organ failure? Obviously these questions are not that easy to answer, but by studying moral philosophy, we can better rationalise the decisions we make, and can learn to make better decisions. Dog mayor and goat mayor raise money to renovate playground in Vermont town

A dog and a goat have helped raise money to renovate a community playground in the town of Fair Haven, Vermont. What makes this couple different is that the dog is the mayor and the goat is the former mayor. Fair Haven residents elected Lincoln the goat as mayor in 2018. Murfee the Cavalier King Charles spaniel is the current mayor. The couple has raised a total of about $30,000 (¥3.1 million) to rehabilitate the playground and to help get local kids involved in the community. The town chipped in another $20,000 (¥2.1 million). The oddball idea of pet mayor elections to raise money came from a local town manager. The pets serve as honorary mayors. Ironically, Murfee is not welcome on the playground. There is a “No dogs allowed” sign. “Murfee is going to take that up with the town,” said his owner, Linda Barker, with a chuckle. (AP) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

The Cavapoo is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles and the Miniature Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Note: some Cavapoo clubs are working towards making the Cavapoo a purebred dog by multi-generation crossing, while other breeders are sticking to the basic Poodle / Cavalier mix stating they wish to preserve the heterosis effect in the hybrid mix. Overall the CavaPoos were bred to take the personality cuddly traits of the Cavalier and mixing them with the highly intelligent, non-shedding traits of the Miniature Poodle. Together they are a smart cuddly companion! https://www.petlandiowacity.com/ 1851 Lower Muscatine Rd. Iowa City, IA 52240 #petlandiowacity

In a dramatic encounter recorded by surveillance cameras, a Florida man chased an alligator under water and rescued his 3-month-old puppy from the jaws of death.Richard Wilbanks, 74, of Estero ran into his backyard pond, wrestled the gator above surface, and pried its jaws open to free Gunner, his Cavalier King Charles spaniel."We were just out walking by the pond," Wilbanks told CNN, "and it came out of the water like a missile. I never thought an alligator could be that fast. It was so quick."He said adrenaline or instinct kicked in, and "I just automatically jumped into the water."NOT HIS PUP: A Florida dog owner has gone viral after video captured the 74-year-old pry his puppy from the jaws of a small alligator without losing his cigar; the dog suffered just one puncture wound. https://t.co/4gI1114EGB pic.twitter.com/Os1J7Dx69h— World News Tonight (@ABCWorldNews) November 23, 2020Holding the alligator wasn't so tough, but prying open the jaws was "extremely hard," he said.Wilbanks said his hands were "chewed up," and he went to a doctor for a tetanus shot.Gunner had one puncture wound in his belly and did fine after a trip to the veterinarian's office. The rescue south of Fort Myers was caught on camera because of a partnership between the Florida Wildlife Federation and the fSTOP Foundation."We live on a shared landscape," Meredith Budd of the wildlife federation told affiliate WINK. "We don't just want to tolerate wildlife, but, rather, we want to thrive with wildlife on a shared landscape."Wilbanks agrees with that mission and he doesn't want the alligator removed from the pond or destroyed."They're part of nature and part of our lives," he said.He still takes Gunner walking, but he keeps the puppy on a leash -- and 10 feet from the pond's edge. "Our pets, they're just like family to us," he said.text by Jay Croft, CNN
