The film is a documentary Doug and the Slugs and Me. The Me is Teresa. The doc is working its way through film festivals and will eventually appear on CBC Gem. It's been said if there was no Doug and the Slugs there would have been no BareNaked Ladies. Led by the charming and clever writer/artist man Doug Bennett, The Slugs cut a swath through a sea of really average 80's bands to become the darlings of Canada's music charts. Lots of hits. One after the other. They sold out all 40 of their Commodore Ballroom gigs. So....what happened to The Slugs and Doug Bennett? That's the bittersweet and complex story of this film. Doug Bennett died at age 52 in 2004. The music lives on. Appearing in the doc are: Sir Bob Geldof Ed the Sock Bif Naked Ron Sexsmith Steven Paige And yours truly.

I chilled out backstage at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom with Taylor Rice and Kelcey Ayer from Silver Lake, Los Angeles, indie rock band Local Natives. It was the first night of their Spiral Choir Tour 2019 and they were on the road to promote the new record, Violet Street. It's always great to hang out with bands on the first night of a tour. I hung out with both members of electronic dream pop band AQUILO, Ben Fletcher and Tom Higham, backstage at the Commodore Ballroom right after they walked off stage. They were opening for their friend UK singer-songwriter electronic artist Låpsley. (In fact you can hear Låpsley in the background backstage warming up her singing voice while we chat.) Generally I don't like to do interviews after the band's set because the band is distracted by many other more fun things to do like beer. But Ben and Tom were game to try an interview and half the fun of this hang sesh is all of the crazy interruptions. How do the band react when I pronounce the band's name wrong? How did Tom and Ben meet? What it was like to work with performer and record producer SOHN on some songs? What strange skills do Ben and Tom especially admire about each other? Which AQUILO song got Tom's Dire Straits fan Dad to take notice of his songwriting? What was it like traveling to Iceland to work with producer Ólafur Arnalds (the producer who did the music for the UK version of the Broadchurch television show)? Who interrupts our interview? How many interruptions are there? What are Ben and Tom like after a few beers? You'll have to listen to find out! Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) AQUILO, Aquilo EP (2014) "You There" 2) AQUILO, Silhouettes (2017) "Human" 3) AQUILO, Silhouettes (2017) "I Gave It All" 4) AQUILO, Silhouettes (2017) "Silhouette" NO songs CANCON

Even if you don't know alternative rock band Jimmy Eat World, you have heard the band's music. Their 2001 breakthrough hit "The Middle" is a classic--and it's played everywhere. I got a chance to hang out with Jim and Tom from the band backstage at the Commodore Ballroom while they were in Vancouver touring their latest record, Integrity Blues--their ninth studio album. Integrity Blues is a little different in that the music was written after the band agreed to take a year away from the band. How do Jim and Tom make the adorable story behind the band's name edgy? How does Jimmy Eat World decide on set lists after putting out a new record? What did the band get up to over the year long break? What does the band have in common with how 80s metal band Warrant wrote "Cherry Pie"? What do Jim and Tom think about the latest study that says people stop listening to new music at age 33? Do Jim and Tom listen to new music--and what are they enjoying these days? Listen to find out! Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Jimmy Eat World, Integrity Blues (2017) "You With Me" 2) Jimmy Eat World, Integrity Blues (2017) "Sure and Certain" 3) Jimmy Eat World, Integrity Blues (2017) "Get Right" 4) Jimmy Eat World, Integrity Blues (2017) "You Are Free" NO songs CANCON

Prozzäk is a late 90s pop band that tells the tales of two animated characters, Simon and Milo, who are also best friends. Most of the music revolves around Simon's attempts to find true love. This band is the first record that most of my friends--who are now in their late 20s and early 30s--bought as a kid. The idea of Prozzäk was born while creators Jay Levine (Simon) and James Bryan McCollum (Milo) were touring in their other band--jazzy poppy soul act The Philosopher Kings--and feeling creatively unsatisfied. Prozzäk enjoyed success with catchy singles like "Sucks to Be You" and "Strange Disease" but eventually Jay and James went their separate ways and became music producers working behind the scenes with other musicians. In 2015 Prozzäk was brought back together to play a reunion concert at Toronto's Atomic Lollipop Festival, a cosplay event. Witnessing fan reaction to the show, Jay and James realized the time was right to revive Prozzäk! I hung out with Jay and James before their sold out Vancouver show at the Commodore Ballroom. What was the first record that Jay and James bought as a kid? Did Prozzäk really start with a fist fight? Which Prozzäk song was originally pitched to (and rejected by) Swedish pop group Ace of Base? What real life situation inspired the song "Sucks to Be You"? Will Jay and James take my amazing suggestion for the next Prozzäk song? Why don't Jay and James play the characters in interviews? Which esteemed actors would Jay and James cast to play Simon and Milo? Can I get Jay and James to do the voices? What surprising places will you see Prozzäk next? You'll have to listen for all the answers. Tracks played on podcast edition of the show... 1) Prozzäk, Forever 1999 (2016) "Love Me Tinder" 2) The Philosopher Kings, Famous, Rich and Beautiful (1997) "You Don't Love Me (Like You Used To Do)" (partial/background) 3) Prozzäk, Hot Show (1998) "Europa" 4) Prozzäk, Hot Show (1998) "Sucks to Be You" 5) Prozzäk, Hot Show (1998) "Strange Disease" 6) Prozzäk, Cruel Cruel World (2005) "Starting Over" 7) Prozzäk, Forever 1999 (2016) "Love Fools Anonymous" ALL songs CANCON

The Top Guys are back with a very special show this week, as we get hyped for ECCW's Ballroom Brawl 8 set to take place on July 15th, 2017, at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC. Joining us this week to discuss their plans for the show are: 4:15 - Scotty Mac & Christina Von Eerie, on their pending wrestling wedding, what it means to sell out the Commodore, Buddy Wayne, and the growth of ECCW and pro wrestling in the Pacific Northwest. (@smacwrestling & @CVEvil_138) 18:48 - Nicole Matthews, on the dynamics of inter-gender wrestling, being beloved in her hometown and loathed on the road, and wrestling Asuka in NXT and SHIMMER. (@nmatthewsninja) 39:22 - Xavier Galaxy, on what it takes to take Andy Bird's Canadian championship, having Nick Pesky by his side, and why Justin is a trash interviewer. (@akaXavierGalaxy) 52:16 - ShreddZ, on where he fits on the BB8 card, how he broke into the business, and why Andy Bird has been such a phenomenal ECCW Canadian champion. (@TheRealShreddZ) 1:03:23 - Mike Everest, on how tag team betrayals change everything -- in-ring, creativity, business, everything -- meeting Harley Race, and rising through the ranks in ECCW developmental. (@ohmyedwardteach) A huge thank you to ECCW to having us out to their training facility, and all of our guests for their incredible insights into the business. We can't even tell you to buy tickets at this point, because the show's already sold out! Hopefully we'll see you there. Follow us on Twitter: @TopMarksPod
Vancouver's Yukon Blonde are the perfect music for a sunny summer evening at the lake. I've been wanting to talk to the band for a while now, but I think this interview was cursed. I was sick and we had to move locations a couple of times to avoid 1) soundcheck at the Commodore Ballroom, 2) a rainy Vancouver night, 3) a security guard on his smoke break, and finally 4) a loud alley air conditioning fan. Still I got some funny stuff from the guys in Yukon Blonde. (The origin of the band name is hilarious!) Listen to our chat. Tracks played on the show... 1) Yukon Blonde, Tiger Talk “My Girl” 2) Yukon Blonde, Tiger Talk “Stairway” 3) Yukon Blonde, Yukon Blonde “Babies Don't Like Blue Anymore” 4) Yukon Blonde, Tiger Talk “Guns” ALL songs CANCON
Austra started as a bedroom project by Toronto's Katie Stelmanis, but with Austra‘s second record Olympia, the project has blossomed into a full blown band collaboration and travelling family! When I caught up with Katie backstage at the Commodore Ballroom, we were both a bit sick, but we still managed to have an excellent chat about everything from writing increasingly personal lyrics to female objectification in the music industry to bathhouses. Yes, Austra–the entire band–has been to a bathhouse together. You'll have to listen to the interview for the entire story! Tracks played on the show... 1) Austra Olympia “Home” 2) Austra Olympia “Painful Like” 3) Austra Feel It Break “Lose It” 4) Austra Olympia “Hurt Me Now” ALL songs CANCON
When I arrived to chat with Lowell Sostomi from Great Bloomers, I had to break up an afternoon beer session involving members of Yukon Blonde, Library Voices and Great Bloomers. But Lowell was perfectly happy to take a break from the backstage shenanigans at The Commodore Ballroom to talk to me about the band lineup changes, Trans-Canada Highway tour van accidents and hardcore dental surgery! Listen to our chat… Tracks played on the show... 1) Great Bloomers, Distant Fires “Something More” 2) Great Bloomers, Speak of Trouble “The Young Ones Slept” 3) Great Bloomers, Distant Fires “Sunday Clothes” ALL songs CANCON
Band of Skulls is Matt Hayward (drums), Emma Richardson (bass/vocals) and Russell Marsden (guitar/vocals). They are an alternative rock band from the UK with an undeniable bluesey classic rock flavour. I sat down with Emma and Russell in a booth at the Commodore Ballroom while their crew set up for the show. We talked about how the two guys met Emma at art school, playing for big venues, their favourite songs on their latest release Sweet Sour and much more. Take a listen. Tracks played on the show... 1) Band of Skulls, Sweet Sour (2012) "Sweet Sour" 2) Band of Skulls, Sweet Sour (2012) "Bruises" 3) Band of Skulls, Sweet Sour (2012) "Navigate" 4) Band of Skulls, Sweet Sour (2012) "The Devil Takes Care of His Own" NO songs CANCON

We stop to give you some subtle updates of what has gone on since the last, “real” episode, and there are a handful of more artists that have granted permission to play their music on our podcast. Since we’re on the go in this entire episode, we don’t talk about the music as much as we explore the park. We even try to suck it up and actually walk out onto Lions Gate Bridge, the fear of heights being fairly strong for both of us. We end the day with some Vancouver Trivia back at home. Also, if you dig the tracks by The Dandy Warhols, check out their show at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver if you in the area on June 1st, 2007. Uncle Weed and Bread the Producer start at the New Amsterdam Cafe and choogle on over reading Gord Downie poetry, talking Barenaked Ladies along the way and spark a huge doobie at High Dough while results in dicey music analysis. … Continue reading Hip Night in Vancouver – Choogle On! #31 →
