Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals splitting the doubleheader against the Phillies in Philadelphia on Wednesday.Game 1 was a tightly played contest that had a playoff atmosphere to it, and the Cardinals simply came a play or two short from finding a way to come out on top. So, the winning streak ended. But in Game 2, the Cardinals were resilient, overcoming an early 5-1 deficit with Sonny Gray not having very good stuff, and finding a way to score a bunch of runs off Aaron Nola and the Philly bullpen in a 14-7 onslaught victory. Masyn Winn and Alec Burleson starred in the nightcap as the Cardinals kept the good vibes rolling into Kansas City.Follow this podcast feed for Cardinals coverage all year long!

Harvard University has declared that enough is enough, and it's now openly refusing to buckle to Trump's command for subservience on multiple fronts. In response, Trump erupted on Truth Social like a petty tinpot dictator, raging that Harvard should lose its tax exempt status and worse. We think this reveals a hidden weakness: Trump and MAGA know that if institutions don't capitulate to them, and band together to overcome their collective action problem, the Trump-MAGA assault could very well falter. If there's some way out of our disastrous mess, it partly involves major institutions doing exactly this, in a concerted, sustained way. We talked to Jonathan Friedman, the managing director of the free expression program at PEN America, about the real nature of Harvard's pushback, the prospects for more institutions following suit, and the potential for a real united front of resistance to disarm MAGA. One expert has warned Aucklanders should be prepared for the chance of a volcanic eruption. Civil Defence estimates there's a 10 percent risk it could happen in the next 50 years. It could cost $65 billion in building damage alone. Victoria University's Dr Finn Illsley Kemp says we'd get a decent warning before an eruption - but every aspect will be expensive, including evacuating the city. "We do think we'll get a warning when it is on the way, because this magma has to come from quite deep - we should be able to see it when it's on its' way, but when it's on the move, it doesn't hang around." In the last 50 or so years the number of independent first-time political candidates elected to office in Canada could fit in a car. Five candidates have made it to, albeit a very small portion of political power, without party support. That covers both provincial and federal elections. As Canadian elections become increasingly presidential affairs, focusing on the personality at the top of the ticket, the quality that seems most necessary in an aspiring MP is fealty to the Party, the leader, the mantra. The pressures of social media, political parties' reliance on marketing data, and the 24-hour news cycle all play a part in the clamping down on new or maverick voices. What is the cost of canceling out the independent voice in our MPs? And how did we get here?Alex Marland, author of No I in Team: Party Loyalty in Canadian Politics and Whipped: Party Discipline in Canada has interviewed hundreds of politicians trying to answer those questions.Host: Jesse BrownCredits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor & Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Editor and Publisher)Fact checking by Julian AbrahamAdditional music by Audio NetworkFurther Reading:Alex Marland — Acadia UniversitySponsors: PolicyMe: Get Covered in Minutes—No Hassle, No Hidden Fees. One of the greatest shows on Earth has been going on now for several months in Hawaii, where the Kīlauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been erupting since late December. The Kīlauea volcano is the most active volcano on Earth. It's also a relatively safe volcano in that it spends most of its time simmering and bubbling without any spectacularly explosive eruptions. But lately it has been putting on some incredible shows of lava fountains, with one glowing string of magma soaring about 1,000 feet in the air, a truly spectacular sight to see. To understand what's going on with Kīlauea and what danger it poses, we're joined today by Matt Patrick, a research geologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
On this bonus ERUPTION episode of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with John Erickson and Mike Beard who covered the first eruption of Mount St. Helens for radio station KGW in Portland, Oregon on March 27, 1980. Erickson was news director and Beard was a reporter who just happened to be airborne over the mountain on the day of that first eruption 45 years ago. The two worked together to get Beard on the air and spread the news to Portland and the world that Mount St. Helens had awakened from a century or more of slumber. The more destructive - and deadly - eruption would come less than two months later. CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streaming everywhere via space101fm.org. The radio station is located at historic Magnuson Park - formerly Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. Subscribe to the CASCADE OF HISTORY podcast via most podcast platforms.

Farming in the wake of the Mt Tarawera eruption has tested the Ford family for nearly a century. But dam-building and a lighter footprint on the land in the sensitive Rotorua Lakes area has earned them environmental accolades. You can read more here.Go to this episode on rnz.co.nz for more details
Back in July 1984, Guitar Player magazine featured Eddie Van Halen on the cover. Since staff editor Jas Obrecht had already interviewed Eddie multiple times, the team asked him to create a crash course in Eddie's playing style. Eddie agreed, and music editor Jim Ferguson was sent to LA for the “My Tips for Beginners” section. For more advanced players, Eruption—Van Halen's legendary guitar-and-drums instrumental from 1978—was the obvious choice. But who could accurately transcribe such a groundbreaking piece? The answer: a young Steve Vai, fresh off recording his Flex-Able solo album. At just 23, Vai was a Berklee College of Music graduate and a member of Frank Zappa's band. His meticulous handwritten transcription of Eruption—complete with detailed performance notes—was nothing short of a work of art. Fast-forward 40 years: In January 2025, Jas posted a podcast interview with Vai from his Skyscraper era with David Lee Roth. The response was overwhelming, so we knew fans would love to see this historic transcription. Steve graciously gave his permission, joking that he might question its accuracy today after so many years and notes played! This original 1984 transcription is now archived in the University of North Carolina's Southern Folklife Collection, thanks to the efforts of Shaw Lentz and the SFC team. Now, we're bringing it to you in high-resolution detail!
Are you enjoying this? Are you not? Tell us what to do more of, and what you'd like to hear less of. The Reykjavík Grapevine's Iceland Roundup brings you the top news with a healthy dash of local views. In this episode, Grapevine publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson is joined by Heimildin journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson, and Grapevine friend and contributor Sindri Eldon to roundup the stories making headlines in recent weeks. On the docket this week are: ✨ Bobby Fischer thought The Reykjavík Grapevine was funded by the CIA. Or was it USAID? We discuss a recent update on the multiple conspiracy theories about The Reykjavík Grapevine's funding. ✨Iceland just got bigger. Or so to say. The UN Continental Shelf Commission has decided that Iceland holds sovereignty over the continental shelf of the Reykjanes Ridge. We "celebrate" this as far as we understand what it means. Mostly we just fear that this will make Trump notice us, something we're happy not to happen.✨A tourist was rescued Thursday by SARS after being lost for five days. The tourist had walked, alone, without any equipment or food to a remote uninhabited fjord in East Iceland and survived by eating grass and old berries. Again we ask: Why?✨ Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd fame was quoted in Japan Today as saying "Our ongoing campaign is to stop illegal whaling activities this summer. We will be intervening against Icelandic whaling. That'll start in June". We discuss Mr. Watson's previous adventures in Iceland, some dating back to 1986.✨ Icelandic Minister of Educations talks shit about our justice system after having lost a court case. We discuss both how this is not cool, yet far from unusual.✨ A man was murdered on Tuesday. At least 6 people have been arrested, some of them detained. Details are sparse. We discuss this tragedy.✨ Those still interested in the Reykjanes Eruptions are waiting for the next eruption to start. We aren't really waiting, but thought we'd mention it.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SHOW SUPPORTSupport the Grapevine's reporting by becoming a member of our High Five Club: https://steadyhq.com/en/rvkgrapevine/You can also support the Grapevine by shopping in our online store: https://shop.grapevine.is------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a Reykjavík Grapevine podcast. The Reykjavík Grapevine is a free alternative magazine in English published 18 times per year, biweekly during the spring and summer, and monthly during the autumn and winter. Today on Line Noise, something of a Krautrock special as we speak to Wolfgang Seidel, the former drummer in Eruption, a group founded by (former Tangerine Dream and Kluster member) Conrad Schnitzler, that was once described as “a thinktank for the then explosive Krautrock scene”. Seidel is also the author of a new book: Krautrock Eruption – An Introduction To German Electronic Music 1970-1980, which I thoroughly recommend. Obviously, we spoke about Krautrock, its influences today, about alternative histories, Kraftwerk, capitalism and more. Enjoy it and just remember - Line Noise comes to you with the support of Cupra.

Just months after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, Syria has been rocked by an eruption of violence. Coastal towns have turned into killing fields, with forces aligned with the government accused of massacring hundreds of civilians from religious minorities. The Syrian online space is also littered with misinformation - part of an information war that is inciting sectarian fear and deepening divisions, in a country still raw from years of civil war and decades under a brutal regime. Lead contributors: Zaina Erhaim – Journalist Ahmad Primo – Founder, Verify Syria Ola Suliman – Campaigns lead, The Syria Campaign Rim Turkmani – Syria research programme director, LSE On our radar: The Trump White House is waging an unprecedented crackdown on pro-Palestine activism on university campuses. Meenakshi Ravi reports on Mahmoud Khalil - a Columbia graduate and, in theory, permanent US resident, who now faces deportation. ICE's PR blitz: Immigration raids as entertainment In Trump's America, immigration enforcement isn't just policy - it's a spectacle. With ICE raids increasingly staged for the cameras, and journalists given front-row access to capture dramatic arrests, is it law and order or a made-for-TV performance? The Listening Post's Tariq Nafi explores the media's role in shaping the immigration debate. Featuring: Patrick Bet-David – Host, PBD podcast Michelle Garcia – Journalist and author Abraham Paulos – Deputy director, Black Alliance for Just Immigration
