Owen is the world record holder for the longest hang gliding flight out-and-return of 222 miles in Owens Valley, CA.  He has been selected to be a member of the US Men's hang gliding team to compete in the World Championships this July in Ager, Spain. Owen is also member of the comedy juggling duo The Passing Zone with his partner Jon Wee. They began their professional journey by winning the Gold Medal at the International Jugglers' Association Championships. This lead to their television debut on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and and appearance in The Addams Family Movie, where they doubled for Raul Julia and Christopher Lloyd.  They have performed at the Royal Variety Performance in London for Prince Charles, on the Miss America Pageant, and at The White House. They were finalists on America's Got Talent, made appearances on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Hell's Kitchen, and regular spots on NBC's Today, as well as providing on-air commentary for ESPN's World Juggling Federation Competitions.

On todays podcast, I speak with Ben Hosking. Ben worked for 11 years with the Northern Territory Police Force. Ben started his career as a general duties officer before specialising as a Tactical Police Officer in the TRG. In 2015, Ben completed the highest level national qualification in the Australian Police curriculum for Dignitary Protection, to enable him to plan operations supporting internationally recognised dignitaries, as well as train specialist law enforcement officers in dignitary protection. Throughout his career, he has earned several accolades, including the prestigious Commissioners Commendation for demonstrating exceptional conduct. This recognition was bestowed upon him for his decisive actions in employing lethal force to apprehend an offender who had attempted to murder a fellow police officer in the line of duty. In 2017, he moved from Policing into the private sector to work with a range of Executive Protection clients who are categorised as Ultra High Net Worth individuals before moving into the private sector, Ben has since worked across the industry providing Executive Protection in locations throughout the Asia Pacific region, including: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia and managed operations in the Philippines, Singapore, and Brunei. Ben works in the executive protection field and currently works for Panoptic Solutions. During his free time, Ben dedicates himself to mastering Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As a blue belt practitioner, he achieved the Gold Medal in the ultra-heavyweight division at the Australian Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu National Open competition. He currently holds a Blue Belt. Beyond his athletic pursuits, Ben delves into the teachings of Stoicism and finds inspiration in William Ernest Henleys poem "Invictus". He is a dedicated husband and father. Our event speaker was a well-coiffed and well appointed senior executive in one of the world's biggest corporations.  The topic was on building your personal brand. A good crowd had turned out to pick up some pointers.  Anticipation gradually turned to disappointment though, as the talk unfolded.  The slant taken was how to project your brand “within” this gargantuan monster. How to climb their thousand foot high greasy pole.  As with other luncheon speaker events, you had a chance to meet people beforehand and then engage with your table mates over the meal.  I reflected that I had “worked the room” pretty thoroughly, combing the ranks of the assembled professionals for any potential clients.  I noted that none of them worked for a mega beast even close to the size of this colossus, so the speaker's sage advice didn't quite hit the mark.  How could that be, I thought to myself? Who Is In The Room? One of the big mistakes for a presenter is not understanding who is going to be in the room.  At what level should you pitch your content?  Are they experts, amateurs, dilettantes?  These days it may be hard to get the full list of who is coming, because of privacy concerns, but usually you can at least get the company name and their positions. If our speaker had done that, then hopefully the speech may have taken a different direction and would have become more relevant to those who took the trouble to attend.  Our Purpose Is? We need to make a decision about what is the purpose of our talk.  Are we here to inform, entertain, inspire or persuade?  Responding to the organisers request for a talk on a certain topic doesn't determine the purpose.  We are given the overall theme and analysing our audience, we know now what angle we should select.  In this previous case, it would have been to “inform” and in that sense the speaker got it right.  The relevancy bit was completely missing though, but at least the purpose was correct.  An inspire speech will be totally different to a persuade or entertain speech.  Think back to the presentations you have attended. Could you recognise the event speaker's approach or was it just a jumble, a catch all effort?  I am putting my money on “jumble”. First Three Seconds We have three seconds to grab our audiences' attention and create a positive first impression. It has to be powerful enough that they don't seize their phones and escape from us to the siren calls of the internet.  Why three seconds?  Over the last five years I have been asking participants in our presentation classes, how long does it take you to form a first impression of someone new.  The answers used to range from five minutes to thirty minutes.  When I ask that same question today, they tell me three seconds, five seconds, fifteen seconds.  It is shocking how little time we actually have, so our opening has to be well planned and well executed or we will have lost the room. The Age of Distraction and The Era of Cynicism.  Audiences are quick to judge, slow to trust and fast to flee from our presentation. We need to have a blockbuster opening. Something that will stop them in their tracks. However, what do we see presenters doing with those first few vital moments?  They are not actively engaging their audience because they are head down, hunched over their laptop, fumbling with their slide deck to get it up on screen. They are doing other amateur things like pounding the microphone asking “can you hear me down the back?” At the next presentation you attend, count the number of first impression killers the presenter is exhibiting.  Have they managed to capture your total attention from the very first few seconds or are you reaching for your phone? How To Begin Rules number one and two of presenting are rehearse before you give the talk and never practice on your audience.  Rehearsal is such an obvious point, but it almost never happens with business presenters.  This one thing will change everything about how the talk is received and how you will be perceived.  Get there early and check all the equipment. No microphone thumping please!  Also have someone else load your slide deck for you, if it can't be primed ready to go.  We need to be 100% present with our audience, so reduce all friction impeding that result.  Begin by picking out someone in your audience half way back and around the middle of the venue.  Make direct eye contact with that person and for the next six seconds speak to them, as if you were the only two people in the room.  Then at random, move to the next person and just keep repeating this six second process for the entire presentation.  Why six seconds?  Anything less and it doesn't give you enough time to engage that person one on one.  However, continuously staring at someone burns into their retina and becomes too intrusive.  We want to directly engage as many people as possible in the time we have, so our engagement time split is important. Wrap Your Information In Stories We want our message to be fondly recalled, savoured like a fine wine and fully imbibed by our audience.  Many speakers, particularly technical presenters, have deluded themselves into thinking the data is all. They believe they get a free pass on needing to be a proficient and professional presenter, because the quality of their information trumps everything else.  Not true. The audience will remember two things – you and the stories you told.  Sadly none of that cool data you have cavalierly tossed up on screen is retained.  They will remember you as someone they would like to hear from again or not.  The data wrapped up in stories is the way to make sure your key points are heard and remembered.  Today, we have to overcome all the other competing things going on in audience minds, while they are sitting there listening to us.  Even if they are enjoying your talk, some in the audience have no shame about flourishing their phones to do some multi-tasking, surfing the internet, while taking in your points.  Stories stop them in their tracks and they will switch back to us.  Here is the snapper though, how many speakers have you heard use stories well or at all?  If it is so effective, why are speakers just droning on about the details?  They just don't know and it shows. The good news is that the speaker proficiency bar is so low, we can easily shine by just avoiding some of these simple mistakes.  We make it hard for ourselves unnecessarily. We want to be a gold medal winner, but finish up being a prize dud.   The choice is yours, so which will you choose for your next presentation?  Why not go for being a winner, a presentations Olympian, every time you speak.

James Thompson joined the U.S. Army in 1948, in part to avoid the consequences for his troubled behavior. Soon he was off to segregated training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. Within a few months, Thompson was deployed to Europe, where he and the other troops were able to gain valuable training experience.The deployment was cut short, forces were brought home, and then they were shipped off to Japan. It was there that Thompson was assigned to the Buffalo Soldiers, all-Black service members in the 24th regiment of the 25th infantry division.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Thompson reflects on entering a segregated Army and how he didn't even know about President Truman's orders to desegregate the Armed Forces until years later because so little had changed. He also takes us inside his first combat experience at Ushon in Korea and how important it was to be a quick learner in combat. Thompson also tells about how he was wounded in 1951 and forced to go home because of his injuries. Finally, he recounts the impressive record of the Buffalo Soldiers in Korea and explains why he's still working hard for his unit to receive a Congressional Gold Medal.

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Argentina clinched their spot at the World Cup before they even took the field last night, due to Bolivia's draw at home with Uruguay. The Albiceleste celebrated with a historic 4-1 in Buenos Aires over their rivals Brazil. The trash talking from Raphinha ahead of the match did not go over well and Argentina humbled their eternal rivals, earning the sweep against them in World Cup qualifying for the first time ever. Media in Brazil are speculating about the future of manager Dorival Junior now as Carlo Ancelotti's name has resurfaced. Nestor Lorenzo's time as manager of Colombia is also in jeopardy after Los Cafeteros blew a 2-0 lead at home to Paraguay to draw 2-2 after a golazo from Julio Enciso. Colombia should be fine to qualify, three of their remaining four matches come against teams below them in the table. Venezuela's home win over Peru could be the biggest win ever for the program as it gives them the lead in the race for the inter-confederation playoff spot and keeps their hopes alive of even jumping Colombia for the last automatic qualifying spot. Their next match at home against Bolivia will be one to watch for sure. Those two are separated by one point for the playoff spot. Iran clinched their qualification with a home draw over Uzbekistan, who now have to face the United Arab Emirates in June to try to earn their first ever World Cup ticket. Plenty of updates from Africa in the video, but the headline is Nigeria conceding late and now are in serious danger of qualifying for the World Cup. Many of the other expected teams are in good spots now to qualify, but Nigeria is looking less likely to make it. The Gold Cup field is set with the biggest surprise last night seeing Guatemala overturn a first leg deficit to defeat Guyana. Jay Fortune's Trinidad and Tobago earned another trip to the Gold Cup alongside Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, Suriname, and Guadeloupe. Trinity Rodman is back with the USWNT for the first time since winning the Gold Medal at the Olympics for two upcoming friendlies against Brazil in California in April. Big UEFA Women's Champions League second leg of the quarterfinal today in London as Real Madrid tries to qualify for their first semifinal appearances as they carry a 2-0 lead into a match with Arsenal. A sad note to end this edition, US Soccer legend Hank Steinbrecher passed away yesterday at the age of 77. He helped modernize the federation into what it has become, overseeing it as the General Secretary from 1990-2000 and being part of incredible growth of the game in this country. While he professionalized so many aspects of the sport in this country, he never lost the personal touch to building relationships and helping grow the grassroots side of the game either. Paralympic gold medal winner Matt Stutzman talks about his impressive archery career. The Iowa native, born without arms, was the first Paralympian to use his legs and feet to compete in the sport. Stutzman debuted in the 2012 London games winning a silver medal and has continued to blaze a trail, inspiring the next generation of para archers to compete at the highest level. This week, he was recognized as one of six finalists for the prestigious World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability at the 2025 Laureous Sports Awards. You can meet Stutzman on Saturday, March 8 at the Iowa Deer Classic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. inside the EMC Expo Center.
