In this episode of Beautiful People at the Florist's Table, Val McNichols sits down with Pennylyn Woosley, founder of Blossom and Bee Floral in New Jersey. Pennylyn shares how growing up in her family's garden center shaped her path — even as she tried to escape it — and how a degree in business and finance ultimately became one of her greatest assets as a floral designer. She opens up about the rare intersection of creativity and financial literacy, and why she's passionate about helping other florists understand the business behind the blooms. They also dig into her work with the AIFD design team, taking gold at the Philadelphia Flower Show, and what it takes to push creative boundaries on one of the industry's biggest stages. It's a conversation about passion, perseverance, and building a floral career that's as smart as it is beautiful. Flags over Solva / Fflagiau Dros Solfach is a 1992 film by Tim Davies, duration 3 minutes 16 seconds. This black and white film documents a site-specific event from the hills above Solva, Pembrokeshire, across the quay from The Gribin. In the centre of the windy overcast scene are five metal and wood flag poles, each a monumental 15 feet high, positioned next to each other in a group. The view of the village Solva in the background across the quay. The flags tussling and rippling in the wind and crashing into one another with each gust. Each flag is a long thin symmetrical triangle shape, with two central light-coloured flags surrounded by darker flags on either side. The flag poles are secured to the ground just under halfway down with supporting rope that creates a tripod like form, attached to the ground with white pegs. In the making of Flags over Solva, Davies had created the flag poles in parts so that they would be ready to assemble as needed and spent a week introducing them into the Solva landscape in a variety of configurations. Having spent part of his childhood in Solva, staying with his grandfather, it is a place well known to him. Using flags as monument, he explored the notion of land ownership as temporary, claiming a site for the duration of each intervention. From the innocent connotation of flags as a plaything for children marking sandcastles, reclaimed by the tide, to the implications of the moon landings; to lamenting the loss and disempowerment of local ownership in relation to Welsh cultural identity, the work references contested land ownership and the object as a signifier of site. The core of Davies' work is rooted in working time- and site-specifically, using 2- and 3-dimensional and performative media. His practice also explores the written, spoken and visualised word. Born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire in 1960, Davies studied Fine Art at Norwich School of Art and completed an MA in Issues in Art & Architecture at the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury. He has worked in a range of media over the last 30 years, exhibiting and making work in Wales, the UK and internationally. He has received many awards, including the Mostyn Open prize, the Gold Medal in Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod and a major Creative Wales Award. He was the first European artist shortlisted for the Artes Mundi Visual Arts Prize and represented Wales in a solo show at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Flags over Solva was acquired in 2005 through the Wakelin Award, an annual award given to an artist living and working in Wales, whose work is purchased for the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery's permanent collection.
Colonel John Blashford-Snell (JBS), one of the world's most renowned and respected explorers, has organised and led over one hundred expeditions including an exploration and first navigation of the Ethiopian Blue Nile. In 1972, using the first Range Rovers and a Landrover, he led the first vehicle crossing of the Darien Gap including the infamous Atrato Swamp. In 1971/72 this team was the first to complete the drive from Alaska to Cape Horn. In 1974 he navigated almost all 2700 miles of the Zaire (Congo) River. Most of his expeditions have environmental, medical and scientific objectives. In 1969, he and his colleagues formed the Scientific Exploration Society, which became the parent body for several worldwide ventures launched by HRH the Prince of Wales. JBS then raised funds and selected a team to run Operation Drake involving 400 young explorers from 27 countries on a 2-year circumnavigation. Ultimately a much larger global youth programme was organised and by 1992 Operation Raleigh had enabled 10,000 young people from 50 countries to take part in challenges and expeditions around the world. Now, as Raleigh International, over 580,000 young men and women have benefitted from this unique programme. Many of them, like Major Tim Peake have become explorers in their own right.Retiring from the Army and as Director-General of Operation Raleigh in 1991, his commitment to young people continues. In 1993, he became Chairman of a £2.5 million appeal to establish a centre to provide vocational training and guidance for the young of Merseyside. This Centre now known as “The Door” has helped over 40,000 less privileged young people. Later he chaired The Liverpool Constructions Craft Guild to promote the training of skilled craftsmen in Liverpool. In 2000 he delivered a Grand Piano to the Wai Wai people of Guyana. A BBC film of this helped to raise $2 million to conserve the tribal area. In 2017 he took an ambulance boat to a remote tribe on the Amazon. The Colonel's work has been recognized by the award of the CBE, and in 1974 of the Segrave Trophy, the Livingstone Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (1975), the Patrons Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (1993) and the Gold Medal of the Institute of Royal Engineers (1994). He has also received medals from Bolivia, Colombia, Mongolia and the Explorers Club (USA).His expeditions are acknowledged for developing inflatable boats for white water rafting, paramotoring on scientific expeditions and other technical advances.JBS has written 16 books, broadcasts and lectures whilst leading expeditions worldwide with the Scientific Exploration Society and projects with the Just A Drop water charity. The founders of South New Jersey's Wander Back Beerworks are no strangers to the beer world, but the industry veterans had modest expectations for the young project—barely two years old—when they submitted entries to the 2026 World Beer Cup. Winning a medal in one of the top-five categories, Munich-Style Helles, with over 150 entries, would be an uphill battle. But as the awards were announced, they found themselves on stage accepting a gold sash for the core beer named after the brewery itself, and a beer that they'd envisioned from the start as an expression of their passion for beer making and a celebration of local agriculture and malting. The beer, Wander Back Lager, is brewed with 100% locally-grown and floor-malted pils malt from Rabbit Hill Malt, and cofounder and head brewer Brian Hink is convinced that this malt—often kilned just days before they brew with it—is responsible for the fresh and vibrant malt flavor that defines the helles. In this episode, recorded the day after their win, Hink discusses: being inspired by local ingredients to start the brewery exploring the idea of freshness in malt and the brightness that it contributes to pale lager nibbling at the margins to improve recipes and process closely monitoring pH through the sparge to avoid over-extracted tannins stepping up dry 34/70 pitches with IPA before harvesting and pitching into lager, for optimal generation flavor mash-out decoction for body without sweetness West coast pils dry hop approach with Krush and Motueka And more. Carol Shelton brings her latest Gold Medal winners to California Wine Country with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. She produces Zinfandel and other varietals under her own label, Carol Shelton Wines. She has been on the show several times and her very first episode was this one in December of 2017. Dan explains that Carol always does extremely well in wine competitions. “Gold medal, gold medal…” says Dan, and he says it’s because she uses fruit that she knows and elevates it every single vintage. The Wild Thing Zinfandel is the wine she is most known for. She started making it back when she was at Windsor Vineyards. It is a wild yeast fermentation, and it is organically grown. Without pesticides, the wild yeast grow on the skins of the grapes without any damage or weakness, so she can count on them to do the fermentation all the way through. The wine is “smooth and polished and long and slurpy,” she says. CWC is brought to you by Deodora Estate Vineyards. Visit Deodora to discover 72 acres in the Petaluma Gap that are producing exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Sip the difference! Wild Thing Zinfandel Dan calls it silky and elegant, with good acidity and perfectly balanced. It has a little Carignane (14%) blended in, and a little Petit Syrah (7 or 8 %). This wine just got 94 points and a Gold Medal at the North Coast Wine Challenge. She won a total of 8 gold medals and two double golds, and one was a best in class. The half bottles are 375 ml. During the first decades of Carol’s career she worked for Windsor Winery and produced a lot of excellent wines. Dan got to know here when he was writing about the winery’s direct-to-consumer program, which was a new process then. She produced 200,000 cases a year of 48 different wines. “Everything was exemplary,” says Dan. Carol is one of the first women to get an Enology degree at UC Davis. In the early years she remembers there were about ten or fifteen women winemakers. She noticed more and more until today there are about sixty or eighty. She belongs to a roundtable of women in wine that meets monthly. Albini Zinfandel The second wine they taste is the 2023 Albini Zin, grown in Windsor. The vineyard is not old vines, it is only about 35 years old. She and her assistant winemaker taste every barrel. The first year they got that fruit, they both agreed that “the new Albini” was the best. Dan explains why Russian River Zinfandel is hard to find, because a lot of vineyards were converted to Pinot Noir. She also makes some other Zins from old vines and both styles are in demand. There is an undefinable spice component in Russian River Zin that you don’t find anywhere else, says Dan. This wine got 97 points and a double gold medal. Dan explains that a lot of Zinfandel suffers from having too much alcohol. He actually put a small amount of water in the glass to balance it and free the flavors. All of Carol’s wines are under 15% alcohol, usually about 14.5. She used to use Clark Smith’s process for removing some alcohol from wine. Dan remembers a clinical tasting session with Clark Smith. The “sweet spot” for flavor was more apparent at different alcohol levels, and his favorite was the lowest. Then they taste the third and fourth wines. Third is an old vine Carignane called Wireless because the vines are not growing on trellis wires. Fourth is an Alicante Bouschet. That is a grape named after the botanist who created it. For a consumer looking for something “off the beaten path” this is a good choice. It has a dark red color. It is unusual and makes a great gift. Dan would give it 10 years but with really good storage.

A story of dreams, nightmares, anguish and redemption... Koby Stevens played 91 AFL games spanning the West Coast Eagles, Western Bulldogs and St Kilda... his career came to a premature end after a 15th concussion. The way he details the moment his childhood dreams were ripped from him, and the fear of an invisible injury for a professional athlete is admirable, inspiring and bloody scary, all in one. His drive to re-find his own purpose, uncover his brain injury, commit to his rehabilitation and recovery is as moving as anything we have heard on the show. Not to mention his passion of story telling and film making... This story will change and save lives. You don't always need a Premiership or a Gold Medal to show how powerful you are.

When Christopher Morales Williams ran his personal best in the indoor 400m in 2024 he became the first–and only–man in history to dip under 44.5 seconds. Due to a faulty sensor in his starting blocks however, what should be the official world record was never ratified. Two years later, and Morales Williams has finally gotten his shot at redemption, removing any doubt as to who the best indoor 400m runner in history really is. Two weeks ago in Poland he capped an undefeated indoor season with Gold at the world indoor championships, setting a new championship record in the process. Still just 21 years old, Morales Williams has racked up a resume that is the envy of pros far more seasoned than he is, yet while this World championship title has been two years in the making, it's far from the limits of where he believes his career can take him. This week on The Shakeout Podcast, Christopher joins us to recap his record-setting run, the training that got him the gold, and some of the secrets to his success that have made him the man to beat in the one-lap race. This week, it's a conversation with Todd Malloy and Robin Reed of the Glenwood Canyon Brewpub in Colorado. It's celebrating 30 years, and in the previous two years has taken gold for festbier at the Great American Beer Festival. They brewed a fresh batch for this year's World Beer Cup, which is currently holding its first round of judging. The brewing duo talk about getting a beer ready for competition, and how to build an award winning festbier. The enzyme converts the precursors in barley to free thiols that smell and taste like passionfruit and grapefruit. It's super clean. No off-flavors like burnt rubber or other sulfurous notes. Just tropical aromatics. You don't have to do anything unusual either, like mash hopping. Just pitch dry Tropics and supercharge your hazy IPA.Dogfish Head Craft BreweryCalling all hop heads! Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA is a fantastically hoppy India Pale Ale that's beautifully balanced thanks to their unique continual hopping method. Delivering a pungent hop flavor that isn't crushingly bitter, 60 Minute is continually hopped throughout the boil for a full 60 minutes … starting to see where the name comes from?! Teresa Mullen, now 75 years old, is a long time athlete with a passion for playing, coaching, officiating, and watching women's sports. Teresa started playing softball with her cousins at a very young age in a farm field with a wooden bat and 12 inch mush ball. When she was growing up there were very few opportunities for females to participate in any sports. For example, at her small high school only basketball and track were offered for girls. After going to a two-year college, she played on a competitive, company softball league and later played in volleyball leagues. Soon she knew she also wanted to coach in order to pass on all her technical and training knowledge to young ladies eager to learn. She began by coaching softball, then added basketball and volleyball. Next Teresa passed her officiating exams for basketball, softball, and volleyball at the high school level. Teresa still coaches, officiates, and still plays softball and volleyball in the National Senior Games held every two years. She finally won the elusive gold medal several years ago in both softball and volleyball! In the episode Teresa and host Elizabeth Emery talk about her history as a long-time athlete, Title IX, coaching and officiating, why she prefers to play on women's teams, changes she has seen in women's sports, flag football, half-court basketball, managing the limitations of getting older, and the joy of watching young female athletes take advantages of all the opportunities now available. Teresa loves watching her daughter (a former college softball player) coach her twins in basketball and softball. Marathoner Emma Bates went viral after sharing that her sponsor, UCan, dropped her once they learned she was pregnant. While UCan denied the allegation, it still reminded us of an unfortunate reality for women athletes – that the “pregnancy penalty” still exists. We break down what the penalty is, why some women athletes view pregnancy as a “death sentence” to their career, and how athletes like Allyson Felix have fought to stop it. In this episode, we also cover: Naomi Osaka retirement rumors swirling after her comments around motherhood and her tennis career Shaq addressing the AI-generated texts between him and Sabrina Carpenter NWSL smashing record attendance (again) – and the Denver Summit player who proved representation does matter Which teams made it to the Final Four, and how Blake and Caroline's brackets are doing Send Its: Carson Pickett's heartwarming moment with young fan: https://www.instagram.com/reels/DWcSRqXEjN_/ Shaq's AI-generated texts: https://youtu.be/rOxlgU75f7w?si=D7XQPSA24hqA5wqz&t=18 The Stewart-Brunson fracture: https://people.com/martha-stewart-said-nba-player-broke-her-toe-courtside-11871039 Miss Thailand contestant breaks it down: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWeaQ_PDRRM/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Learn more about your ad choices. In 2026, USA Hockey accomplished something no other nation has ever done, winning Olympic gold medals for Mens, Women's and Paralympic Ice Hockey. Yet this was not something that happened overnight, and in fact was the culmination of nearly two decades of growing the game and modifying rules and game formats in order to develop more skillful players and a much larger player base to choose from. And who better to discuss this journey than one of its architects, Ken Martel. Ken Martel was named senior director of player and coach development in November 2022. He is charged with helping provide a framework for associations nationwide to follow for optimal athlete development. From 2009-22 Martel served as the technical director of USA Hockey's American Development Model after spending two years (2006-08) at USA Hockey's national office in Colorado Springs, Colo., working on coaching education and player development initiatives. For his efforts using science to advance sport, Martel received the USOC "Doc" Councilman Award for Ice Hockey in 2004. Prior to arriving in Colorado Springs, Martel was a part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program staff as an assistant coach for eight years (1998-2006), including a dual role with responsibilities for player personnel his final five seasons. Martel has made appearances behind the bench of nine U.S. teams that have competed in International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships, including four times with the U.S. National Under-18 Team (2000-04), four times with the U.S. National Junior Team (2004, 2006, 2008-09) and once with the U.S. Women's National Team (2007). He has been part of two gold medal-winning teams, including the first-ever U.S. gold medals in the IIHF Men's World Under-18 Championship (2002) and the IIHF World Junior Championship (2004). Among his additional coaching stops, Martel served one season (1997-98) as an assistant coach for the men's ice hockey program at the U.S. Air Force Academy and seven seasons (1990-97) as an assistant men's ice hockey coach at Michigan Tech University. He also spent one year (1990-91) as a graduate assistant for the men's ice hockey program at St. Cloud State University. A four-year (1985-89) letter-winner as a defenseman at Lake Superior State University, Martel helped the Lakers to the school's first-ever NCAA national title in 1988. Andy and Randy discuss some of today's top stories in the National Football League.
What does it look like to balance Olympic competition, motherhood, and the unexpected realities of parenting? In this episode, I sit down with Olympic gold medalist Elana Meyers Taylor to talk about raising two children with disabilities, leaning on support, and how motherhood changed the way she thinks about success, identity, and resilience. We also talk about representation in sport, using ASL as a family, and the mental health side of chasing big goals. It is an honest conversation about what it takes to keep showing up as both an elite athlete and a mom. In this episode, we cover: What it felt like to finally win Olympic gold after years of coming close Why the right village matters in motherhood and elite sport Parenting two children with disabilities and using ASL as a family How representation can help other families feel less alone What sport taught her about parenting through uncertainty How motherhood changed her identity, perspective, and relationship to winning The realities of being a Black athlete in winter sports Why access and inclusion in sports still matter What she hopes her children take away from watching her story How she prepares for the post-Olympics emotional crash and protects her mental health To connect with Elana Meyers Taylor follow her on Instagram @elanameyerstaylor, check out all her resources at https://www.elanameyersusa.com. SEASON 4 EPISODE 63: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENTS: Trump should be in prison JUST for his new role in the new covering-up of the part of the Epstein files that are about him. Trump. The accusations are against Trump. The memos are about Trump. The investigations are OF Trump. They are missing. There is a law saying Trump must produce them. He has not. That is, by definition, a cover-up. A conspiracy to BURY evidence. Even if somehow it CLEARED him. SPECIAL COMMENT No. 2: As the Kash Patel Olympic Scandal expands exponentially, we have buried the lede. Patel claims he was at the Olympics, working, running American security. Let's suspend our disbelief and say he's NOT lying. If he really was at the Olympics to run American security - WHY WAS HE DRINKING ON THE JOB? Why was he out-of-control drinking with the people he was there to protect? The experts like my old MSNBC pal Juliette Kayyem are stunned: Security is not allowed to DRINK, during an event, during an Olympics. Not until the entire Olympics were over. ESPECIALLY if you are IN CHARGE of security! If you are hired for security, they put "no drinking" in your contract. SPECIAL COMMENT No. 3: Why are the US Olympic men's hockey players not only still digging but digging new additional holes? Now it's not just drinking with Patel and laughing at terrible misogynistic jokes by Trump, but all but five of them were used as political props by Trump at the State of the Union, one (Tage Thompson) was photographed in a complete MAGA hat with the Press Secretary, the winning goal scorer is complaining everybody else made it political - and Auston Matthews (a Mexican-American who captains Canada's team and has thus had two of his three countries threatened by Trump) is standing there grinning behind Trump in the Oval Office, disgracing his team and its fans and his mother and his own relatives. B-Block (47:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Fox's Jesse Watters doesn't want a president who struggles to read (prefers one who can't read at all). The popular internet delusion that the president the last time the Americans won Olympic hockey gold was Reagan (it wasn't). And MAGA internet disease victim Senator Mike Lee says ICE dresses like Mexican Cartels. C-Block (58:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: As CBS continues to dissolve before our eyes, the sad truth that network news has been collapsing since at least the night in September 1997 when I was summoned by the president of NBC to have dinner with the chief of the MS part of MSNBC with instructions to humor and ignore him because all we wanted was his money. - Trump delivers what Gerry calls his strongest State of the Union ever — defiant, unapologetic, and relentlessly pro-American. - Democrats sit stone-faced through tributes to crime victims, wounded veterans, and Gold Medal heroes, refusing to stand for core principles. - A single challenge — “Protect Americans over illegal aliens” — leaves every Democrat seated, creating the night's most powerful visual. - Trump torches sanctuary cities, insider trading in Congress, and Somali fraud schemes. - Outside the chamber, progressive protests spiral into spectacle as Trump's 108-minute speech dominates the political battlefield. The U.S. wins their first gold medal in Men's hockey since the Miracle On Ice in 1980Exactly 46 years after the "Miracle on Ice" Lake Placid Games, the U.S. men's hockey team brought home another Olympic gold medal.Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime on Sunday to secure the third gold medal in American history at the Olympics.“I hope this will inspire kids to put this jersey on someday, as it's the best feeling in the world," Dylan Larkin said after the win. "What we just did, nothing will ever match this.”Matt Boldy got on the board for Team USA just six minutes into the game to give the United States an early lead.Canadian defenseman Cale Makar scored the equalizer with 1:44 left in second period to tie the game at one apiece going into the second intermission. But it was Connor Hellebuyck, who played out of his mind the entire game, who would prove to the deciding factor in the final. The Winnipeg Jets goalie put on a highlight-reel performance that will go down in hockey history. "It was an all-time performance from a superstar at his position," Matthew Tkachuk said. "It's going to go down as one of the best performances of all time. It has to. All the great United States goaltending performances you want to talk about, that's right up there. If we don't have him, we don't win.” Hellebuyck saved 41 shots in the game and made it virtually impossible for Canada to break through to the back of the net."It's a dream come true," Hellebuyck said after the game. "I love this group, we've had so much fun over here, we've grinded, we've battled, this is some of the best and most fun hockey I've ever played."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 62: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: In case you somehow missed it, Kash Patel's enablers at the FBI (Fan Boys International) were busily denying he went to Italy for the Olympics just to see the hockey game and jock-sniff the victorious U.S. team when all sorts of video leaked out of the dressing room showing him doing exactly that - dancing, drinking, cringing. And then Patel himself couldn't resist Supposedly we sent 100 agents to help with security and he just had to be there. Guesstimated cost just for his latest stage of his perpetual vacation on our dime? $400,000. It would be bad - a future administration will probably address it as misappropriation of funds. But what makes it worse is there's a piece by Patel from 2022 complaining about previous FBI directors wasting money on vacation, and a clip about his FBI predecessor Christopher Wray's vacation travel. Simply impeaching him is insufficient. He needs to go to prison. NOT THAT TRUMP WOULD DO THAT; THIS IS THE BEHAVIOR TRUMP TEACHES: Trump is a thief and he owes you and me at least 293 billion dollars - and we want it back. The worst thief in American history - and 270 billion of that is in tariffs. Because on tariffs, the Supreme Court has given him his COMEUPPANCE. Well – it’s given him A comeuppance. Because his new argument for the new REPLACEMENT Monday tariffs was his old argument AGAINST overturning the old Friday tariffs. But the key thing the Court actually did was give his cult a mortal shock. It is the first official body to give the Trump-Town Guyana Death Cult the message: that he is making this crap up, as he goes ALONG. -- Plus: an actual good idea from Boris Johnson: to send peacekeepers to Ukraine – NOW. And I’M the guy who thinks the Hockey Gold Medal is a BAD THING. And no, the John Barron who called into C-SPAN wasn’t Trump – he was too coherent. B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mark Zuckerberg manages to lose a lawsuit before the trial starts, Kid Rock proves he's not charging $5000 for front row tickets by confessing he IS charging $5000 for front row tickets, and Stephen Miller's wife has another one of those Freudian slips that may be desperate pleas for help from inside a bad situation. C-Block (50:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Baseball has already started so time for my annual explanation: why I don't work for baseball's TV network even though they offered me my own show and I accepted it. It has to do with a big league club threatening them if they didn't renege.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
