Welcome to How To Start Up — the podcast that dives into the real stories behind the startups, side hustles & self-made successes. Jamila Brown is an American-German powerhouse who moved to London at 21 and after being told her life was “over” when she became a single mum at 24 — proved everyone wrong. From running Soho House's global ESG programme to discovering her knack for freelancing during a sabbatical Jamila's journey to founding her own impact agency is anything but linear — and that's exactly why it's inspiring.Today, she's a business owner, a mum of two, a wife and a sustainability and social impact champion. This is an honest, motivating chat about reinvention, resilience, and knowing your worth.Jamila's advice: Self-confidence helps! As does a sense of purpose/serviceBeing vocal makes you visibleIn my case, being a single parent helped concentrate my mind and made me use my time wellHaving good people skills, being outspoken and having drive are all importantRemember ESG matters, there is a point to itI had an idea and a smile - not a websiteEvery challenge is an opportunityDon't procrastinate, just do it and you will learn as you goFF&M enables you to own your own PR & produces podcasts.Recorded, edited & published by Juliet Fallowfield, 2024 MD & Founder of PR & Communications consultancy for startups Fallow, Field & Mason. Send us a textWe tried something new in this podcast. Bryan popped into "the studio" randomly to share some thoughts he had while he was studying and reviewing the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18. Because of the dollar amount (not really in dollars though), Bryan saw connections between the story of Esther and Matthew 18. When you overlay the characters from Esther onto Jesus' parable it adds a new twist to the end of the parable that hits closer to home. Join us as we discuss forgiveness and add another level to the depths we are called to forgive. We're rolling into June with another episode of Good, but not the best... a Dancing Gnome podcast. We knew we had a pretty loaded episode for this month, so to kick things off, we take a quick Look Ahead at what's to come in the world of Dancing Gnome before taking a Look Back at a busy May. First, Andrew recaps "Lustra Day" weekend, including a discussion on Barrel Lustra, the different casks variants, Lustra water, and more. Then we talk about the MBCC festival in Copenhagen, which was attended by DG family members Matt and Brett. That discussion rolls into the start of our second segment as Matt talks about his experience in Copenhagen. Next, we talk with Aaron about his trip to the Czech Republic! This was the same trip that Matt and Andrew took last year to learn about Czech brewing, service, etc. (Check out the May 2024 episode if you missed it.) We finish out the show by playing a round of Lager vs Logger and a quick Watch, Listen, Learn. Thanks for listening!Intro/Outro music by: Kabbalistic VillageBreak music by: Kevin MacLeod
There's an easy way to find out what Facebook knows about you—you just have to ask.In 2020, the social media giant launched an online portal that allows all users to access their historical data and to request specific types of information for download across custom time frames. Want to know how many posts you've made, ever? You can find that. What about every photo you've uploaded? You can find that, too. Or what about every video you've watched, every “recognized” device you've used to log in, every major settings change you made, every time someone tagged you to wish you “Happy birthday,” and every Friend Request you ever received, sent, accepted, or ignored? Yes, all that information is available for you to find, as well. But knowing what Facebook knows about you from Facebook is, if anything, a little stale. You made your own account, you know who your Facebook friends (mostly) are, and you were in control of the keyboard when you sent those comments. What's far more interesting is learning what Facebook knows about you from everywhere else on the web and in the real world. While it may sound preposterous, Facebook actually collects a great deal of information about you even when you're not using Facebook, and even if you don't have the app downloaded on your smartphone. As Geoffrey Fowler, reporter for The Washington Post, wrote when he first started digging into his own data:“Even with Facebook closed on my phone, the social network gets notified when I use the Peet's Coffee app. It knows when I read the website of presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg or view articles from The Atlantic. Facebook knows when I click on my Home Depot shopping cart and when I open the Ring app to answer my video doorbell. It uses all this information from my not-on-Facebook, real-world life to shape the messages I see from businesses and politicians alike.”Today, on the Lock and Code podcast, host David Ruiz takes a look at his own Facebook data to understand what the social media company has been collecting about him from other companies. In his investigation, he sees that his Washington Post article views, the cars added to his online “wishlist,” and his purchases from PlayStation, APC, Freda Salvador, and the paint company Backdrop have all trickled their way into Facebook's database.Tune in today. You can also find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and whatever preferred podcast platform you use.For all our cybersecurity coverage, visit Malwarebytes Labs at malwarebytes.com/blog.Show notes and credits:Intro Music: “Spellbound” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Outro Music: “Good God” by Wowa (unminus.com)Listen up—Malwarebytes doesn't just talk cybersecurity, we provide it.Protect yourself from online attacks that threaten your identity, your files, your system, and your financial well-being with our exclusive offer for Malwarebytes Premium for Lock and Code listeners.
We are in the thick of it now. Aliens attacking the planet, student heroes pretending to be all that and a bag of chips, dogs and cats living together....end of the world type stuff. So, the question is, in the middle of this chaos....who acts, and who folds? Let's start with a normal day for most of us. We just had pleasant evening with a charming individual, sorting socks or organizing star charts...whatever. And now, in the early morning we are leaving their room and walking back to ours. Completely innocent. Normal activities only lead towards normal events. When we are doing nothing out of the ordinary like walking back to our room or taking a giant elevator underground, we do not expect anything to occur that will cause panic or adventure. You might not, but I do, cause I live a fascinating life. And that is usually when death, destruction, mayhem, and property damage occur. Stupid sky villains! So there you are, face to face with something that wants to rip you apart and play with your squishy bits. It does not matter if you are still using them, that thing wants to eat them. "But my brain pan!" you squeak....it does not matter, they do not care about your feelings or your headache or your lack of adequate health care. They just care about pain....and Twinkies. Aliens love Twinkies. At least there are some heroes left on Earth that do not mind getting their claws dirty or their fists bruised. In fact, some are a little too eager. But still, claws in the skull are not fun. You should never punch down, unless you are a giant in a fight. Then you can punch down as much as you like. But, at the end of the day, never forget that you really are nothing more than a potential red smear on a wall.....What, too soon? We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. We have a couple of nifty shirts for sale. https://www.redbubble.com/people/jeffrickpresent/?asc=u Check out the art for this episode at: https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2025/05/15/infinity-the-hunt-2-schools-outforever/ You can also subscribe and listen to us on YouTube! Spring is the season when gardeners throw off the hibernation and slumber of months of wet feet, many layers and waterproofs and are reborn anew! The stirring of life in the garden is one of the years great experiences, and makes a gardening life such a worthwhile pursuit, not only is it good for the planet to see the earth greening up, it is also good for the gardeners soul. But there is still lots of hard work to get on with - seeds have to be sown, mulch laid, supports erected and lawns mown. So join Lucy and Saul as they continue their professional gardening lives in the pure heaven that is Spring!Well, dear listener, we apologise for a man down this week - then a woman down, too. Elizabeth Barrett (1806-1861) was one of the most prolific and accomplished poets of the Victorian age, an inspiration to Emily Dickinson, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, and countless others. And yet, her life was full of cloistered misery, as her father insisted that she should never marry. And then, the clouds lifted, and a letter arrived. It was from the poet Robert Browning (1812-1889), admiring her from afar, declaring his love. How did these two poets find each other? What kind of life did they share afterwards? And what dark secrets had led to her father's restrictions…and how might that have affected his daughter's poetry? Host Jacke Wilson takes a look at the story of the Brownings. This episode originally ran as episode 95 on May 29, 2017. It is presented here without commercial interruption. In this solo episode, host Nik Fialka reflects on the perseverance, purpose, and the long journey to becoming a professional pilot. Drawing inspiration from the grueling 21-day stage races of professional cycling like the Tour de France, Nik dives deep into what it means to keep going, even when the finish line feels out of reach. Whether you're buried in flight school, grinding it out at the regionals, or facing setbacks that make your goals seem distant, this is the reminder you didn't know you needed. Success in aviation, like in cycling, is about showing up daily, staying consistent, and investing in yourself—especially when it's hard. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why the pilot journey is a marathon, not a sprint—and why that's okay How to navigate the feeling of being “stuck” in your aviation progress The importance of trusting your process and pacing your progress How to manage fatigue and mental burnout during long aviation seasons Why real relationships—not just transactional ones—can shape your career The value of rest, refueling, and staying mentally and physically healthy How daily incremental effort pays off in the long haul CONNECT WITH US Are you ready to take your preparation to the next level? On Ron's Amazing Stories! Imagine standing at the mythical "Lake of Wisdom," only to find that even shallow waters can reflect the sky. This episode is a quirky dive into unexpected connections, featuring two stories that seem worlds apart—but are they really? Take on Ron's challenge: Can you figure out the twisted thread tying them together? Story 1: Like Man, Somebody Dig Me Series: Suspense Aired: May 25, 1958 Synopsis: A tale straight from the Beatnik era—cool cats, existential dread, and a man determined to exhaust everyone he meets. It's a wild ride through history's most dramatically unimpressed generation. Story 2: The Outer Limit Series: X Minus One Aired: November 11, 1955 Synopsis: Fasten your seatbelts for a leap into the "future"—1965, that is—where experimental rocket tests set the stage for humanity's triumphs and cautionary tales. Spoiler: Things don't go exactly as planned. Did you spot the connection between these two tales? Was it delusion, inspiration, or something more? Share your thoughts—we'd love to hear from you. Carla Sosenko changed her attitude about online dating. In her twenties, there was so much angst about whether or not he was going to like her. Now, as a grown-ass woman, Carla knows who she is and isn't afraid of scaring off the little boys — sorry.
