“It started out by doing a kind of a white paper that we called Imperatives for Quality Cancer Care. Ellen Stovall, our CEO [of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship] at the time, gave this report to Dr. Richard Klausner, who was the head of National Cancer Institute at the time. He called Ellen immediately and said, ‘Why are we not doing something about this?' Within one year, we had the Office of Cancer Survivorship at NCI,” ONS member Susan Leigh, BSN, RN, told ONS member Ruth Van Gerpen, MS, RN-BC, APRN-CNS, AOCNS®, PMGT-BC, member of the ONS 50th anniversary committee, during a conversation about her involvement in cancer survivorship advocacy. Van Gerpen also spoke with ONS members Deborah Mayer, PhD, RN, AOCN®, FAAN, and Timiya S. Nolan, PhD, APRN-CNP, ANP-BC, about the history and future of cancer survivorship. Highlights From This Episode Leigh: “Another way that [National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship] got very involved with looking at how we keep this information coming and how we really share care with our outside physicians is the development of survivorship care plans. And then we also hoped that we would see more survivorship clinics by now. But between trying to get people to develop care plans and clinics, it's been like pulling teeth. It has been very difficult. And a lot of this struggle to get this going has been, first of all, there isn't enough money to do this. There isn't enough time for immediate staff to take these on, and we just don't have enough staff as it is now. And survivorship is not a moneymaker, so it's just something that has to be done kind of on the side.” TS 11:54 Mayer: “When I became ONS president in the '80s—I was the fourth ONS president—we were given a cancer grant to do something with our presidency. And that was when I really wanted to bring attention to rehabilitation as a means to address cancer survivorship issues because we had a very ‘treat 'em and street 'em' attitude. We gave you your treatment, and we sent you home, and you had to figure out the rest. And there wasn't a lot of knowledge or support to help you put your life back together again afterwards. And so in that process, it was an interdisciplinary group of professionals that tried to come up with what was an appropriate position statement because ONS was just starting to do position statements. And so we developed a first position statement on cancer rehabilitation to address survivorship issues in like 1987 to '89.” TS 17:15 Mayer: “When I went back to school for my PhD, I did my dissertation on health behaviors of cancer survivors and realizing the huge gap in the care that they were getting for anything other than their cancer. We were still focused on their tumor and on treating their tumor. But we were missing the picture that if the cancer didn't kill them, their heart disease would, and they would develop diabetes and other things. … But as people started living longer and longer, we were missing all these other chronic illnesses that would contribute to their quality of life and overall lifespan. So my dissertation put me on a different path, and I think the second part of my career was really focusing on instead of just relieving suffering and the quality of life issues, really looking at cancer care delivery and how we could do a better job of doing the team of teams that people needed to have their issues addressed.” TS 19:34 Nolan: “I ended up having my first permanent role on a hematology-oncology unit at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. And there, I literally saw patients who were fighting for their lives. And despite the severity of their illness, they wanted more than just survival. They wanted to have meaning. They wanted to have dignity. They wanted to have impact with the time that they had left, whatever it was. And so those experiences planted a seed in me. And that seed was that cancer care must extend beyond treatment and we need to embrace, really, quality of life.” TS 23:31 Leigh: “I was not the researcher. I was not the major writer. I was not the identifier of a lot of the risk factors. But I spread the seed. I took all that information from different sources and shared that with all of the audiences that I spoke to. So I was called a seed spreader, kind of the Johnny Appleseed of oncology nursing at that particular time. And then once we saw academia step in and say, ‘We need to get good data about what's going on here,' … then my stories and stories from survivors started decreasing and the presentations were given more from the academic standpoint.” TS 34:41 Nolan: “I really believe in community, academic, government, and industry approaches to survivorship as well. We can no longer operate in silos. We really need to learn how to walk across the aisle, build bridges as we can so that we can do this work together because we know that communities bring lived wisdom and context. And academicians bring the research and the ability to create the evidence. The government brings policy and public health infrastructure, and certainly industry brings innovation and scalability. But also in this new paradigm that we find ourselves in, the industry may also bring the dollars to be able to help us to do even more work.” TS 43:45

In the woods just east of Louisville, Kentucky, an old railway bridge cuts through the treeline. To many, it would appear no different to any other trestle found in the rural US. But locals believe that this particular overpass is guarded by a goat-like beast so disturbing that it causes those who see it to instantly run for their lives, or, in some cases, their deaths. For more than half a century, the bodies have continued to pile up with no end in sight, leaving people to wonder, what truly lurks in the shadows of Pope Lick Creek. After nearly two decades in development hell, the long-awaited continuation of the 28 Days Later saga finally chewed its way into cinemas. Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. In this episode, Emily Wilson interviews artist Julio Cesar Morales. Julio discusses his journey from Tijuana to San Francisco, his influences from social movements, music, and literature, and his interdisciplinary approach to art. The conversation explores his exhibitions "My America" at Gallery Wendy Norris and "Ojo" at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, both focusing on themes of migration, borders, and immigrant experiences.Julio shares stories behind his watercolor series inspired by real-life attempts to cross the US-Mexico border, and reflects on the symbolism of twins and portals in his work. He also talks about his collaborations in sound art, the importance of music in his creative process, and the impact of community and social justice on his art. Tune in for an inspiring conversation about art, migration, and the power of storytelling.About Artist Julio Cesar Morales:Julio César Morales employs a range of media and visual strategies to explore issues of migration, underground economies, and labor, on personal and global scales. He works by whatever means necessary: in a series of watercolor illustrations, Morales diagramed means of human trafficking in passenger vehicles, while in other projects he employed the DJ turntable, neon signs, the historical reenactment of a famous meal, or the conventions of an artist-run gallery to explore social interaction and political perspectives.Julio's artwork has been shown at venues internationally, including; the Lyon Biennale, France; Istanbul Biennale, Turkey; Los Angeles County Art Museum, Los Angeles; Singapore Biennale, Singapore; Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt, Germany; Prospect 3, New Orleans; SFMOMA, San Francisco; Perez Art Museum, Miami; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Museo del Barrio, New York City; The UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, Davis; and Gallery Wendi Norris, San Francisco, amongst others. Mark has a personal conversation with Malorie Cooper. In this episode they talk about: The reason she and her family moved from Boston, MA and back to Canada The uniqueness of New England compared to the rest of the United States How Canada is one of the hardest countries to emigrate into Not having ever gotten American citizenship The oppression and fear of being a queer transgender person, particularly in the US How it's virtually impossible for people who aren't oppressed to understand what it's like Losing half her fan base and friends when she transitioned into the person she was always born to be How when you life authentically and vulnerably, people will actually be attracted to you Living in a judgement-free zone/bubble Feeling unsafe for the first time after she came out as Malorie How coming out as trans is likely the hardest thing a person will ever do -- but, in addition to having a child, one of the most rewarding things Mal ever did The recurring theme of "found family" in Mal's novels And more... After the conversation Mark reflects on the idea of priviledge he has in not having to be fearful when walking alone outside after dark (for example) about "found family" and the importance of connecting with others who understand you where you are. Dwarves, gargantuan evil and much too tiny tunnels - we're covering The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, by Alan Garner! Cheshire visitors Susan and Colin have come to stay with farmers Gowther and Bess and tromp around Alderley Edge. Said tromping unearths a centuries-long battle between good and evil - all connected to the mysterious teardrop gem in Susan's family heirloom bracelet. Tolkien inspiration is on full display but Garner creates a world utterly his own, replete with a heady brew of Norse, Welsh, Celtic and Arthurian mythology plus a little Lovecraftian unspeakable horror. In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Kisha Reynolds, certified clinical hypnotherapist, certified life coach, and author. Kisha shares her personal journey with body focused repetitive behaviors (BRFBs) and how that led her to hypnotherapy and becoming a certified clinical hypnotherapist. Kisha describes why hypnotherapy is, as well as some common misconceptions about hypnotherapy. We discussed conditions which hypnotherapy can be beneficial for, as well as hypnotherapy can be an adjunctive treatment to traditional mental health therapy. Kisha defines for listeners what BRFBs are and how they impact one's daily life. She also describes how hypnotherapy can be used in the treatment of BRFBs. We end the episode by discussing how individuals can become certified in hypnotherapy or seek out hypnotherapy for themselves.Connect with Kisha:www.321deepsleep.comkisha@321deepsleep.com IG: @321deepsleepFacebook: 321 Deep SleepBook: Beyond the Habit: Understanding the development, triggers, and treatment for body focused repetitive behaviors (BRFBs)Resources mentioned in this episode:Hypnosis Motivational InstituteFifty Shades of Purple Against BullyingThe TLC Foundation for BFRBsThe Lyder FoundationConnect with Me:Follow me on IG @jessicaleighphdFollow the podcast on IG @psych.talk.podcastFollow me on TikTok @jessicaleighphdFollow me on Youtube Follow me on Threads @jessicaleighphdWelcome to Group Therapy PodcastJoin my Facebook community: Grow Through What You Go ThroughWays to Work With Me:Mind Over MatterLGBTQ+ Affirming MasterclassBe a guest on my podcastResources:Anti-Racism ResourcesLGBTQ+ Affirming ResourcesThe Helping Professional's Guide to Boundary SettingIntro/Outro MusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodMusic License
