Heute schmücken ihre Texte u.a. Photographer Sasha Samsonova is generating quite a buzz with her striking images of women who are comfortable in their own skin and unabashedly sexy. A female Helmut Newton, Sasha is all about celebrating the beauty and strength of the women who stand before her lens. Born and raised in Ukraine, Sasha is an autodidact photographer who was already shooting for Harper’s Bazzar by the time she was 17 years old, having picked up a camera after her plans to become a professional ballroom dancer fell by the wayside. But her innate understanding of how the body can express emotion in the way it moves has had a direct impact on both her photography and the films and videos she is now directing in Hollywood. Sasha has worked with celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Lili Reinhart, Khloe Kardashian, Emma Roberts, and Kate Bosworth, her images have been featured in the pages of Vogue, L’Officiel, Elle, and Playboy and she has collaborated with brands such as Google, Fear of God, and Revlon. When you see Sasha’s work it’s all about sensual strength. And when you listen to her speak, you know that her goal in life is to make women feel as powerful as possible. And she has the photos to prove that she is doing exactly that.

Creative director and stylist Sascha Lilic is a fashion month’s fixture. His distinctive look, of a beret and monocle, always makes him easy to spot at a show. You can also always count on Sascha to give you a great sound bite about what he thinks of a presentation, and it’s often something that will make you laugh out loud or blush. Maybe it was all those years working alongside his mentor, the iconic photographer Helmut Newton, who was also known not to mince words, that formed Sascha’s talent for finding the perfect bon mots. But to be fair, Sascha, who was born in Yugoslavia and grew up in Germany, was always fascinated by the world of fashion and its fundamental transformational properties. By the tender age of 16, he was already working as a hairdresser and make-up artist, before he finally got his first break as a stylist. And once he did, he never looked back. Sascha became the fashion & creative director of influential 90s era SPOON magazine before moving on to become the editor-in-chief of ABOVE magazine, which Sascha launched in 2004 and sold for a pretty penny right at the height of excess before the global recession of 2008. And since then, he has been using his talents on all sorts of different fashion fronts, as a stylist, fashion consultant, creative director...you name it...if it has to do with fashion and creativity, Sascha is your man. A claim that is backed up by the laundry list of publications, photographers, and celebrities he has worked with. Which include, but not limited to Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Interview, V Man, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, Glamour, LʼOfficiel, and Grazia. And besides his longtime collaboration with Newton, Sascha has also teamed up with other leading photographers like Ellen von Unwerth, Norman Jean Roy, and William Klein...and I could go on. His visual eye has transformed everyone from Lana del Rey, Jessica Chastain, Sienna Miller, Rihanna, Lily James, Diane Kruger, Keira Knightley, Lea Seydoux and I could go on and on. So let’s just say that Sascha has quite a lot of great fashion stories to tell. Which is why I wanted to jump on a zoom call with him for this podcast. To tell us all about his extraordinary life, lived to the fullest, in fashion.

I recently had the pleasure to connect at the British Hairdressing Awards 2019 with the celebrity, award winning and session hair stylist Louis Byrne. It was here where I first learned of his inspirational empowerment project, I Can, I Am, and I Will. I loved it so much, that I just had to bring him on to todays show. Completing our 3 week instalment series dedicated to mental health and wellbeing awareness within the hairdressing industry, we are to learn today on how Louis's life changing experiences led him through a process of understanding, acceptance, sobriety and self-care. It was during this big shift in his life that Louis says, "The positive mantras replayed over in my head with each beginning with I Can…, I Am… and I Will." Having 20 years of experience working at the top of his industry, Louis seemed to have it all. 4 years assisting Sam McKnight travelling the international fashion week circuit, styling editorials for the likes of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and L’Officiel, working on campaigns from Net-a-Porter to Nike, been the tour stylist for Ellie Goulding, the man behind the ‘quaff’ for Emma Willis, and the go-to hair stylist for an impressive number of actresses, models and musicians. However, the journey to reaching these heights wasn’t always plain sailing! Riding on a rollercoaster of working hard, playing hard and fast living to avoid facing his demons, culminated in a debilitating accident in 2018 when Louis broke his leg in 3 places. Forced to pause and take stock of his situation, Louis began a process of looking inwards. As Louis explains, "I had to face up to issues including the trauma and loss that had been plagued me since childhood, destructive behavioural traits and addiction that had affected me and those close to me deeply." Everyone of us has our own story to tell, including our own versions of the positive mantras beginning I Can, I Am and I Will. For Louis he focused his love for the art and expression of hair styling and considered the power of the connection between stylist and client. He realised the empowering and transformative effect this combination can have which goes beyond appearance alone, and this laid the foundation for the project that connects creativity to wellness, with a driving force of positivity. An ongoing project, todays podcast finishes with how you can become involved by sharing your own version of 'I Can, I Am and I Will' using the hashtag #icaniamandiwill. So lets all do this together as we head off into a new decade and era of self-discovery. Happy and Healthy New Year to you all! A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions. Alexandra Kruse, needs no introduction, but if one were to give her titles it would look something like: writer, stylist, celestial communicator and mother, but if we’re honest, she is much more than that. As she liked to say herself: mother of miracles who radiates an incredible energy and fills the room with magic, light and a good dose of humor. After living in almost all the big cities in Germany she came to Zurich where, after working as fashion editor at Annabelle, she decided to quit her daytime job and go out on her own. You might have seen her texts in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and ICON, her styling work in L’Officiel and Time Magazine and in large advertising campaigns for Credit Suisse and UBS, to simply name a few. Her journey has taken her all over the world and opened her eyes to all kinds of situations, which makes her the queen that she is today. Her heart beats to its own rhythm and being able to talk with her, even for an hour was enlightening to say the least. She has such self confidence that I wish for all of us women to develop and radiate. From sniper (almost!) to international celebrity makeup artist... meet Nigel Stanislaus.Nigel is a makeup artist extraordinaire. He was the Makeup Director for Maybelline New York Australia for over a decade, travelling the world, leading the makeup at local and international Fashion Weeks and working with celebrity clients including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Cindy Crawford, Kendall Jenner, Jess Hart, Ruby ROse, Olivia Newton-John, Melissa George, Sir Bob Geldof and Michael Buble. His work has been published in Elle and L'Officiel, and he's appeared as a judge on Australia’s Next Top Model and Asia’s Next Top Model. But in his early days, he was told he’d never make it as a makeup artist. He’s certainly proved otherwise. As he embarks on his next chapter after finishing with Maybelline earlier this year, we talked about growing up in Singapore, how he almost became a sniper (yes, really!), how he got his break to become Mr Maybelline, all about the jetsetting life (and the reality of it), learning to not let his career define him, his triumphant 'I showed you!' moment, why he thinks we’re in the golden age of makeup, his thoughts on ridiculous beauty trend and Instagram makeup, dealing with trolls, the importance of your self-worth and a lot more. Nigel is so candid and funny and an all-round-beautiful human being - and yes, my first male guest on Beauty Island!A quick note on this episode - we live quite far apart so met in the middle, at a cafe in Collingwood called South of Johnston. As we were talking, the lunch rush came in so there is a bit of background ambience, for the first half of the episode. When it got too noisy, we moved from the cafe to Nigel’s car to finish the conversation. (The glamour of podcasts!) So I do apologise for the background noise for some of it, but hope you don't mind - just lean in and imagine you’re sat at the the table with us, enjoying the conversation over coffee and maybe a little sweet treat. Enjoy. What is Beauty Island? Each episode, beauty journalist Brittany Stewart sits down with a guest to find out about their life, career and the 8 desert island beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them.Follow Nigel:Instagram: @nigelstanislausWebsite: nigelstanislaus.comMore about his 'Be Your Own Makeup Artist' masterclass with Rescu Academy: http://bit.ly/2U1cHf8Follow Brittany Stewart:Instagram: @brittanybeautybtsEmail: beautyislandpodcast@gmail.comSubscribe to It's A Beauty! Fashion illustration is experiencing a renaissance. Fueled by the shareability on social media, talented illustrators can now catch the eye of both consumers and fashion houses on the look out for fresh ideas. Fashion on Film curator James Nolen will host a panel of local expert fashion illustrators about the sketches that happen before a stitch is sewn, and how illustration is leading the fashion world into innovative, uncharted territory. The subjects of this year's program, Yves Saint Laurent and Manolo Blahnik, were both furious sketchers. Yves would create hundreds in preparation for each collection, and Manolo, who has created over 30,000 shoes in a career spanning close to five decades, has a pencil attached to his bed in case of somnolent inspiration. Joining James on the panel will be Melbourne-based fashion illustrator and educator Angie Réhe whose work has appeared in a host of high end mastheads including Vogue, Elle, Harper's BAZAAR, L’Officiel, as well as Jimmy Choo and illustrator Katie Geppert who (amongst many things) has been developing some unique works for one of the hottest designers/labels of the moment, Virgil Abloh's Off-White and rounding out the panel will be Danielle Whitfield, Curator of Fashion and Textiles at the National Gallery of Victoria.
