Welcome to another episode of The Story of Rock and Roll Show.  S7E27 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 Jul 2024.  It's traditional on TSORR to celebrate Independence Day in honour of the USA and all that awesome Rock music that has come out of the US, the stuff I, and many other listeners grew up on.   I took the opportunity to use the week's Twisted Triplet to thank the USA with three different songs called 4th of July.  We heard from The Sweet, Soundgarden, and of course Bruce Springsteen.  The final track for the Evolution of the Foo Fighters was ‘Rescued' off their 2023 release dedicated to their friend and drummer Taylor Hawkins But Here We Are.   Immortals this week came from Audience and a track called ‘House on the Hill' off the album of the same name.  Released in 1972 it is a wonderful track.      The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘C'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Coheed & Cambria – No World For TomorrowCinderella – Long Cold WinterCold Chisel – EastChildren of Bodom – Follow the Reaper Bomb Crocodile and Slow Panda's picks of the week were Billy Valentine & The Forest Rangers – Along the Watchtower and David Bowie - I'm Afraid of Americans' We ended heavy with some Indian metal and an Awesome track from Swedens The Halo EffectArtists Featured:  Tom Morello, ACDC, The Lazys, Van Halen, Mammoth WVH, Dee Snider, Elegant Weapons, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, The Angels, The Saints, Dirty Honey, Massive Wagons, Soundgarden, The Sweet, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Foo Fighters, The Color Blew, Jasper Dan, Goodbye June, Audience, Coheed & Cambria, Cinderella, Cold Chisel, Children of Bodom, Sum 41, Exciter, Manowar, Rob Zombie, Billy Valentine & the Forest Rangers, David Bowie, Bloodywood, W.A.S.P., The Halo EffectThe Story of Rock and Roll.

Episode 26 of season 6 went out live at 19h00 on 29 June 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. The show kicked off with Buffalo Springfield and ‘For What Its Worth', a track that Rush's Alex Lifeson says he most wishes he had written. It made sense to then go straight into a song he did write, Rush with Freewill.  There is plenty to get excited about on this show, a good mix of old, new, heavy, and light.  Check the artists featured below to get the playlist, it's in order so you kind find things fairly easily.  The new releases included another track from Jelly Roll off his Whitsitt Chapel album which I predict is going to go straight to the top of the charts, another track off Extreme's latest album Six. and then 'Hearing Voices' off the Foo Fighters latest release But Here We Are.The Immortals featured W.A.S.P. and their magnificent 'Chainsaw Charlie (Murders In the New Morgue)' off The Crimson Idol, one of the finest concept albums ever released by a metal band.   This week's Ultimate Challenge looked at 2018.  The choices were Greta Van Fleet – Anthems of a Peaceful Army, Halestorm – Vicious, Black Label Society – Grimmest Hits, and Judas Priest – Firepower.  We threw in Shinedowns Attention Attention for a bit of fun. Artists Featured:  Buffalo Springfield, Rush, Ted Nugent, Deep Purple, KISS, Kissing Dynamite, Dee Snider & George Lynch, Mr. Big Motörhead, Onslaught, Boom, Korn, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Foghat, The Lazys, Danko Jones, White Zombie, Doomsday outlaw, Jelly roll, Tom petty, Volbeat, U.D.O., Ayron Jones, W.A.S.P., Greta Van Fleet, Halestorm, Black Label Society, Judas Priest, Shinedown, Extreme, Foo Fighters, Butch Walker, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Van HalenThe Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 21 of Season 5 kicked off TSORR at 19h00 on Thursday 26 May 2022 with Chickenfoot's upbeat 'Oh Yeah'.  From there it was Kiss and The Answer out of Ireland with a track called 'Feel the Fear'.  This was one of the most enjoyable episodes I have ever done.  It felt a bit different but I am not sure why.  It had all the usual fare; Punk from The Stranglers and the Clash, classic metal from Iron Maiden and Metallica, Grunge from Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.  With Soundgarden, we went 'Full On Kevin's Mom'.The South African music bit was great thanks to Rebel Rocks' own Tinus Nel who had old recordings that I only had on cassette of The Diamond Dogs.  The Dogs were SA's finest live band back in the late '80s / early '90s and they would have been huge if they were in the US.  The energy from these recordings is palpable, We checked out a new track from The Black Cat Bones off the new album Book of Miriam which is being released slowly.  We also checked up Odyssey and Sacrifist.  My favorite bit was the last hour where we had some rocking heavy stuff from The Lazys and Billy F. Gibbons before having a mellow-ish Jethro Tull into Van Morrison, into Bowie bit.  Moving the show through to a seriously heavy ending took skill and worked like a charm, going via the weirdness of Electric Six and Beastie Boys and using the Kerry King solo as the bridge into Slayer with 'Americon' and then Arch Enemy with their new track 'Sunset Over Empire' and show closer 'Arrows In Words From The Sky' by Machine Head Artists featured:  Chickenfoot, Kiss, The Answer, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Annihilator, Iron Maiden, Texas Hippie Coalition, Hell Yeah, Danko Jones, Buckcherry, Led Zeppelin, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Dream Theatre, Edguy, The Stranglers, The Clash, Transvision Vamp, The Diamond Dogs, Odyssey, Sacrifist, Grave Digger, Metallica, The Lazys, Billy F. Episode 41 of Season 4 contained 40 songs which is probably a record for the show.  It aired at 19h00 on 15 Oct 2021.  It was a fairly joyous affair, we had no load shedding and I got my car back from the garage, I think the mood permeated the show.We kicked off with Black Spiders out of Sheffield and then checked out Craig Goldies, ex Dio's, band Ressurection Kings from their 2016 release of the same name.  We pulled in some big guns in the form of W.A.S.P.  and Skid Row and then took in two in a row with Chris Cornell on vocals. The early stuff was taken care of by Mott the Hoople, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.  There was some commentary around the fact that the Stones have dropped 'Brown Sugar' from their new live set supposedly because of pressure from the politically correct.  I played 'Some Girls' to highlight the Overton Window.  The Who sounded great with '1921' off Tommy. We checked out the new Black Label society track off the new album Doom Crew Inc which will probably be called Doom Squad forever on TSORR.   A highlight for me was the new Joe Bonamassa release called 'Time Clocks'.  I had a bit to say about the amount of hate Joe gets these days and highlighted the fact that this song is an anthem.  Give it time to grow on you, Joe is amazing, I am grateful he keeps giving us an album a year where most artists keep us waiting 5 or more years. We went to the UK for 4 tracks, especially enjoyable was Death of the Clown by Dave Davies.  SA music was taken care of by Blue Scream, L.A. Cobra, and The Color Blew.  Blue Scream, was a Tully McCulley project with Roger Kaye and Robin Gallagher involved.  You can read more about the band and Roger in The Story of Rock and Roll, he was a hell of a character.  We hit the home straight with the two Toms, Petty and Waits, and an almost country and western track from Lynyrd Skynyrd off the God and Guns album.  Special shout out to In Flames and Trivium for bringing the heavy.  The New Trivium In The Court of The Dragon is stellar.  Artists featured:  Black Spiders, Resurrection Kings, Smith / Kotzen, W.A.S.P., Skid Row, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, Jorn, Wolfmother, The White Stripes, Live, King Kobra, Mott the Hoople, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Whitesnake, Baton Rouge, Extreme, The Eagles, L7, The Pretty Reckless, Black Label Society, The L.A. Episode 33 of Season 4 aired on 19 August 2021.  We kicked off with my current favorites Chrome Division and then spent some time in the '70s with Grand Funk Railroad and Kiss.  From there we got right back to the present day with Seether's new EP Wasteland - The Purgatory.   In general, it was a pretty balanced show we checked out John Mellencamp and Kid Rock and got as heavy as Anthrax and King Diamond.  The Punk came from Die Toten Hosen, The Jam, and The Clash.Aussie was represented by ACDC and Airbourne and SA by Wonderboom, Government Car, The Uninvited, and Lithium.  We also risked the wrath of a world of haters by playing Nickelback and we countered the sexism of the song with an equally sexist viewpoint from the ladies in the form of The Donnas and 'Take Me To The Back Seat'.  The highlight of the show for me was back-to-back Led Zeppelin and The Cult with 'Tangerine' and 'Edie (Caio Baby)' respectively as well as Cold Chisel's live long-form version of 'Bow River' featuring the very underrated Ian Moss on guitar and vocals.  Artists featured:  Chrome Division, Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss, Seether, Soundgarden, Airbourne, Trouble, Philip Sayce, The Lazys, Led Zeppelin, The Cult, Nashville Pussy, ACDC, Greta Van Fleet, System of a Down, Blink 182, Shinedown, Cold Chisel, Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Die Toten Hosen, the Jam, the Clash, Anthrax, Coheed & Cambria, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Uninvited, Government Car, Kid Rock, John Mellencamp, Clutch, Judas Priest, Last In Line, Y&T, The Offspring, Wonderboom, Lithium, Nickelback, The Donna's, Hell Fire.

Episode 28 of Season 4 was a strange beastie.  It aired at 7 pm on 15 July 2021 and it marks the fact that South Africa was in the middle of a wave of, I can't say unprecedented violence because it's a violent place, so let's just say precedented violence that we haven't seen for a very long time.  Whole shopping malls have been looted and burnt down, Trucks have been burnt and thousands of people ran riot through the streets in KZN and Gauteng looting and destroying in an orchestrated orgy of violence that got totally out of control.  The result is supply lines cut off and shops that are empty.  It is not a good situation and at this point is not resolved.  While this show cannot but help to comment on the situation,  in many ways, it's a celebration of people coming together to stand against looting and violence and to protect their communities against the inevitable results of years of government policy failure. We kicked off with Godsmack and 'Bulletproof' and then had 'Something For The Pain' courtesy of Bon Jovi.  Next up, a shout-out to the guys and girls who were patrolling on neighbourhood watch and community groups in the form of 'Guardian of the Night' and 'Got Your Six' by Accept and Five Finger Death Punch respectively.  We got positive with Joe Bonamassa's 'Bridge to Better Days' and Queensrÿche with 'Resistance' off the phenomenal Empire album.  I truly believe we are building a bridge to better days and solidified that with 'United' off Judas Priest's British Steel album.  There was a nice little bit talking about the music and how important it is and how special the people who understand and value TSORR are and how the guitar unites us.  Piet Botha's 'Man Met Kitaar' underlined the point.  Things got heavy with Lamb of God and 'Walk With Me in Hell' but then we cooled it down with some Joe Jackson and The Boomtown Rats.  The bluesy stuff was courtesy of Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Tom Petty type stuff came from Tom Petty (surprise, surprise) and The Gaslight Anthem.  With about an hour to go, I saw the sad news that Jeff La Bar, guitarist for 80's metal legends Cinderella had just passed away so we took a listen to him and said RIP and thanks for the music, Jeff.  Anyway check it out, comments, questions, suggestions etc welcome on the TSORR Facebook page.  Artists featured:  Godsmack, Bon Jovi, Buckcherry, Sinner, Accept, Five Finger Death Punch, Megadeth, ACDC, The Pretty Reckless, Joe Bonamassa, Queensrÿche, W.A.S.P., Sammy Hagar, Piet Botha, Neil Young, Judas Priest, Slash feat Lemmy, Lamb of God, Joe Jackson, The Boomtown Rats, System of a Down, Candlebox, Mötley Crüe, Pride & Glory, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tom Petty, The Gaslight Anthem, The Lazys, We Are Harlot, Cinderella, Johnathan Martin, White Zombie, Kid Rock, The Damned Things, The Distillers, The Uninvited, Volbeat, Parkway Drive, Iron Maiden.

Episode 17 of season 4 was recorded while I was away on a Guitar Weekend in Clarans with Dan Patlansky.  there are quite a few references to Dan and to the band I jam with, the amazing Bunk Girls Motorcycle Club as a result.  There wasn't a lot of time for getting things to match up and flow so this show is pretty rough and ready.  It does of course have the sort of tracks you would expect from TSORR.  We started with Korn, which is something different, it just had the right energy.   There was quite a bit of '80s metal, Tesla, slaughter, Y&T, Tokyo Blade, and even Stryper, remember them?  To hell With The Devil  was the top-selling Christian Metal album for about 15 years.  We took a listen to the title track.  We had the usual fare, ACDC, Gun 'n' Roses, Airbourne, Deep Purple, that sort of thing but we also checked out Anto-Nowhere League, The Wildhearts, and Paradox.  Pantera and Parkway Drive took care of the heavy.  SA stuff courtesy of Dan Patlansky, Government Car and 12th Avenue and new stuff courtesy of Greta Van Fleet, Alice Cooper and The Offspring.  Artists featured:  Korn, Y&T, The Cult, Bullets & Octane, Adrenaline Mob, The Lazys, Airbourne, Deep Purple, Guns 'n' Roses, ACDC, Crawl, Paradox, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, ZZ Top, Alice in Chains, My Chemical Romance, Coheed & Cambria, Yngwie Malmsteen, Greta Van Fleet, Alice Cooper, The Offspring, The Wildhearts, Anti-Nowhere League, Stryper, Tokyo Blade, Pop Evil, Kiss, 12th Avenue, Government Car, Pantera, Parkway Drive, Dave Hause, Tesla, Hanoi Rocks, Slaughter, Dan Patlansky, Dire Straits, Nickelback

Min bästa vän fick somna in 30 mars 2021. Episode 7 of Season 4 aired at 7 pm on 18 February 2021.  It kicked off with Badlands and 'High Wire' off their stunning debut album released in 1989,  Jake E. Lee on guitar, and what an amazing job he did.  He should possibly rethink his Red Dragon Cartel and establish a solid blues-rock outfit like Badlands again.  Just my view :-).  We followed that with Whitesnake, Doug Aldrich, and Reb Beach on guitar and Doug Aldrich featured again later when we took a listen to the brand new Dead Daisies with Glenn Hughes on vocals. 2021 is kicking off with some good new releases, other than the Dead Daisies there is a new Michael Schenker Group and a new The Pretty Reckless.  The MSG is getting excellent reviews from the rock press and The Pretty Reckless is getting rave reviews from me.  The track played off the new Pretty Reckless was 'And So It Went' featuring Tom Morello.  We stayed with Tom and caught 'Exploder' by Audioslave. Last week's dabble into prog continued with some more Porcupine Tree and Forty Six & 2 by Tool.  You should find a lot to get your teeth into.  Later in the show, I did alert listeners to the fact that I am on Day 3 of testing positive for Covid as it explained a few glaring balls-ups. I have left the show as it is in the interest of accuracy.  There are one or two long pauses and memory lapses that can only be attributed to what I call Covid brain.  If you have had it you will know.  I found a few instances where the song ended and for a few seconds I couldn't remember how to play the next one.  I am sure that next week's show will be a bit sharper.  Artists featured:  Badlands, Whitesnake, King Kobra, Extreme, Foghat, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, W.A.S.P., Skid Row, Onslaught, U.D.O, The Temperance Movement, Porcupine Tree, Tool, The Pretty Reckless, Audioslave, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Motor Sister, Michael Schenker Group, Rainbow, dead Daisies, The Lazys, Asylum Kids, Sugar Drive  Ruff MajikTom Petty & the Heartbreakers, John Mellencamp, Chickenfoot, Adrenaline Mob, Lita Ford, Kid Rock, Led Zeppelin, Rammstein, Joe Satriani.

The thoroughly enjoyable Episode 3 of season 4 went out live at 7 pm on the 21st of January 2021.  It was great right from the start, there were plenty of people tuned in and from Boston's opening track ‘Don't Look Back' all the way through to Parkway Drive it was a cracker.  A listener highlighted the fact that at 21h21 we would be 21 hours, 21 minutes, 21 seconds of the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.  That created some pressure to find a suitable song to play at the time.  Even more so because before I found this out I had already played Green Day's 21 Guns which would have been good.   We ran through a lot of 80's metal;  Ratt, Mr Big, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Tygers of Pan Tang, Slaughter, and Keel and we checked out 70s giants The Sweet and the inimitable Ted Nugent.  The punk section was covered by the Sex Pistols and The Stranglers and Aussies were represented by Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, and The Lazys.  Special mention here for Cold Chisel, I played Bal-A-Versailles and the feedback was instant, “what a great track”!  Usually, I will get a comment about a song but literally, immediately, 4 comments came in about it.  Another crowd-pleaser was SA's own The Black Cat Bones with ‘Don't Wake the Scarecrow', again, to all-round approval, it's a song that raises goosebumps every time.   Other than that we checked out the remarkable rebranding and rebuilding of the career of Ron Keel and we sorted out the 21 hours, minutes, and seconds thing by being able to say that at the exact time we were listening to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show and being blasted by a suitable bit of metal which was fitting in many ways.   Artists featured:  Boston, ACDC, Godsmack, Ratt, Mr Big, The Sweet, Hinder, Paragon, Green Day, The Rolling Stones, System of a Down, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Halestorm, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, The Lazys, Ted Nugent, Static-X, Seether, Black Star Riders, Mustasch, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Cougar, Metallica, Tygers on Pan Tang, Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Machine Head, Slaughter, Aking, The Diamond Dogs, The Black Cat Bones, Keel, Ron Keel Band, Parkway Drive

Episode 2 of season 4 aired on 14 January 2021.  I really enjoyed this show, it was a breeze, maybe because for the first time ever we didn't start with a bang.  The chilled sounds of Cold Chisel's 'Way Down' off The Last wave of Summer  was long a long pull of a cold beer after a hard day.  After that, it was all guns blazing for a while.  We checked out Texas Hippie Coalition, then some Thundermother, my current favorite all-girl rockers, and then it was off to the classics with deep purple and 'Highway Star'.It felt like a really good mix of lesser-known bands with the megastars, we had big names like Rammstein, Megadeth, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, and ZZ Top along with Newsted, Massive Wagons, Adrenaline Mob, Hatebreed, Phil Campbell, and The Hitchers.  Highlights for me were the bit of reminiscence with Rose Tattoo and Guns 'n' Roses as well as celebrating my current love affair with Parkway drive.  Check out Viva The Underdogs it is a spectacular documentary.  For some reason it was a very Aussie heavy show, we hit 6 Aussie bands, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo, The Screaming Jets (that was fun, I played F.R.C. which I doubt gets a lot of radio play :-) ) The Lazys, Parkway Drive, and of course ACDC.  SA was represented by The Diamond Dogs and the amazing Johnathan Martin off his The Infinite Highway album.  All in all a great show.  Artists Featured:  Cold Chisel, Texas Hippie Coalition, Thundermother, Deep Purple, Mötley Crüe, Halford, Newsted, Massive wagons, Phil Campbell, Mötorhead, Rammstein, Alter Bridge, Badlands, The Hitchers, Sex Pistols, Rose Tattoo, Guns 'n' Roses, The Screaming Jets, the Lazys, Ramones, Hatebreed, Led Zeppelin, Joe Bonamassa, Dan Patlansky, The Diamond Dogs, Johnathan Martin, Parkway Drive, ACDC, ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Adrenaline Mob, Saxon, Megadeth, Mercyful fate, Billy Squier, Chickenfoot & The Uninvited.

Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for the support throughout 2020.  There is no question that it's been tough :-).  The X-mas eve edition of TSORR went on air at 7 pm on 24 Dec 2020.  It wasn't particularly Christmasy as I generally am not overly Christmasy myself and especially when it comes to music.  I wasn't a total grinch though and did play 'Christmas in Hell' by Sixx A.M. The show kicked off with some Whiskey Myers and then hit stuff like Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, and Animal Drive.  My daughter was in the house and she is a big part of why TSORR exists as both a book and a Radio Show so I played a couple of tracks and explained how all of this came about.  Kiss - Destroyer, John Paul Young's Yesterday's Hero, and The Boomtown Rats' masterpiece the Fine Art of Surfacing, all have a special bearing on the show as do Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and The Stranglers. There was a short tribute to Leslie West, a giant of a man both physically and as a guitarist.  He sadly passed away last night (23 Dec) and so, it was fitting that we played 'Legend' off his Unusual Suspects album.  Leslie's tone and feel were indeed extraordinary and he will be missed.  That's Leslie in this episode's thumbnail for those who may not be familiar with the man (perish the thought).Highlights for me included Tom Petty with 'Have Love Will Travel', Machine Head with Bastards, Tom Waits with Mr. Siegal, and Rammstein with Deutschland.  Artists featured:  Whiskey Myers, Slash, Quiet Riot, The Lazys, Animal Drive!, ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, Arapaho, POD, Rammstein, System of a Down, Australian Crawl, Kiss, John Paul Young, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, The Clash, Seether, Clutch, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Leslie West, the Killers, The Longshot, Cold Chisel, the Mayfield Four, Machine Head, Megadeth, Rival Sons, Airbourne, Prime Circle, Bad Company, Tom Waits, Iced Earth, Halestorm, Tesla & Slade.

Andy Nielsen is a musician, a drummer for The Lazys, a band that has exploded in the Canadian rock N roll scene. Growing up in Winmalee, in the Blue Mountains, Andy was first introduced to drumming at the age of 8 by his Dad and continued to hone his skills through his high school years. A strong respect and understanding for music and its pioneers have helped maintain a balanced perspective for Andy. “Even today I really only listen to old music. I was always interested in finding out who influenced them (musicians), and where their influences came from,” Andy said. “I always have a strong respect for musicians from the past, because they've paved the way for what we have today.” Embarking on his first tour straight out of school, then on numerous overseas adventures, Andy has embraced the lifestyle as a touring musician, but has a strong appreciation for what he has given up getting to where he is today. Remember a few months ago when Australia was burning?  We all watched in horror at what was happening to the animals.  Well Leon Harrison of The Lazys (who call Australia home) organized a great show to raise some much needed funds for all the damage that had been done.  The show sold out.  But, now we could be waiting a while for it to happen.  F%$# YOU Covid-19.  He's also got some great stuff going during isolation and is just a dude and a half and fun to talk to. Darryl also talks to Philip Sayce, a Canadian guitar virtuoso who's next album Spirit Rising comes out on April 24th.  He talks about cutting his teeth with Jeff Healey's band and his admiration for him along with some other cool stories
