Since ChatGPT came on the scene, numerous incidents have surfaced involving attorneys submitting court filings riddled with AI-generated hallucinations—plausible-sounding case citations that purport to support key legal propositions but are, in fact, entirely fictitious. As sanctions against attorneys mount, it seems clear there are a few kinks in the tech. Even AI tools designed specifically for lawyers can be prone to hallucinations. In this episode, we look at the potential and risks of AI-assisted tech in law and policy with two Stanford Law researchers at the forefront of this issue: RegLab Director Professor Daniel Ho and JD/PhD student and computer science researcher Mirac Suzgun. Together with several co-authors, they examine the emerging risks in two recent papers, “Profiling Legal Hallucinations in Large Language Models” (Oxford Journal of Legal Analysis, 2024) and the forthcoming “Hallucination-Free?” in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies. Ho and Suzgun offer new insights into how legal AI is working, where it's failing, and what's at stake.Links:Daniel Ho >>> Stanford Law pageStanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) >>> Stanford University pageRegulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab) >>> Stanford University pageConnect:Episode Transcripts >>> Stanford Legal Podcast WebsiteStanford Legal Podcast >>> LinkedIn PageRich Ford >>> Twitter/XPam Karlan >>> Stanford Law School PageStanford Law School >>> Twitter/XStanford Lawyer Magazine >>> Twitter/X (00:00:00) Introduction to AI in Legal Education (00:05:01) AI Tools in Legal Research and Writing(00:12:01) Challenges of AI-Generated Content (00:20:0) Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback(00:30:01) Audience Q&A

Especially when you're new in your paralegal career - or juggling a dozen high-priority tasks at once. We all make mistakes. What matters most is how we react to them. In this episode, Ann shares real-world stories of paralegal mistakes (including her own!) and more importantly, how to recover, rebuild trust, and grow stronger from them. Key quote from Ann: One mistake doesn't define you. And if you did get fired for a single mistake? That says more about the firm than it does about you! Key Takeaways: Why learning from your mistakes can be a career accelerator rather than a career-ender. What NOT to do when you make a mistake is just as important as what to do. Ragunath (Raghu) Ramanathan, President of Legal Professionals at Thomson Reuters speaks with Esther Bowers, Chief Practice Innovation Officer at Honigman, to discuss how the firm is handling enterprise-wide adoption of AI, practice area by practice area, as well as how the firm is analyzing lawyer workflow, and how AI is being used in the firm's summer associate program.
This week we welcome Raghu Ramanathan, President of Legal Professionals at Thomson Reuters, for an insightful discussion on the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the legal industry. Raghu shares why he believes the legal sector, alongside healthcare, stands at the forefront of the AI revolution. His journey into the legal tech world, driven by the transformative potential of AI, sets the stage for a deep dive into current trends, future predictions, and the strategic initiatives shaping the future of law.Central to the conversation is Raghu's updated perspective on the evolution of law firms, revisiting predictions he first made in 2017. He outlines a compelling framework describing "three waves" of AI adoption currently underway. The first wave, "Optimization," which many firms are experiencing now, focuses on using AI to enhance existing workflows, making tasks faster and more efficient. The second wave, "Re-engineering," involves fundamentally rethinking processes, staffing models (including the traditional pyramid structure), pricing strategies, and the very nature of legal work to leverage AI's capabilities more deeply. Looking further ahead, the third wave anticipates the emergence of entirely "New Business Models."Thomson Reuters is actively navigating and shaping this transformation, particularly through its AI platform, CoCounsel. Raghu highlights the rapid evolution of CoCounsel, emphasizing the continuous development of new "skills"—capabilities ranging from summarization and research to drafting and complex analysis like the innovative "Claims Explorer." He explains TR's strategy involves integrating proprietary data (like Westlaw), client-provided documents, and public information, leveraging advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) from various providers to deliver comprehensive and powerful AI assistance. Prioritizing new skill development involves balancing significant client value with technical feasibility, constantly informed by close collaboration with innovation-focused customers.Beyond law firms, the conversation explores the crucial role and adoption of AI within the court system. Raghu notes a surprising enthusiasm among courts, driven by the urgent need to address growing case backlogs and enhance access to justice within tight budgets. He points to Thomson Reuters' significant partnerships, including a major agreement to deploy AI tools across the US federal courts and ongoing collaboration with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC), which is fostering education and policy discussions among judges and court staff nationwide. Complementing product innovation, TR's expanded "Customer Success" initiative underscores the importance of user adoption, providing dedicated resources and best practices to help lawyers and legal professionals effectively integrate AI tools into their daily workflows, ensuring technology translates into tangible value.Raghu anticipates that smaller and mid-sized law firms may initially leverage AI more aggressively as a competitive equalizer, pushing larger firms to make bolder, more strategic moves beyond simple optimization. He stresses that the ultimate differentiator for success in the AI era will likely be less about the technology itself and more about effective change management. The rapid pace of AI adoption already witnessed in the legal sector signals that this transformation is not a distant prospect but a present reality reshaping the industry at an unprecedented speed.Listen on mobile platforms: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript

This has been a notable year for BriefCatch, a legal technology company devoted to helping legal professionals improve their legal writing. It started nine months ago, with the company's raise of a $3.5 million seed round, continued with its roll outs of new products and features, and then to its formation of a legal writing advisory panel of judges, advocates and academics. All of that culminated in BriefCatch's announcement last week of its hires of three legal tech veterans into key executive roles in marketing, sales and product management, all to help lead it into its next stage of growth and development: Lydia Flocchini as chief marketing officer, Darren Schleicher as chief sales officer, and Kyle Bahr as product manager of AI and other new products. Ross Guberman, the founder and CEO of BriefCatch, is our guest today to discuss the company's history, growth, recent news, and future plans – which will include the launch of a suite of AI-enabled products. A former practicing lawyer, he was a legal writing coach and speaker when he conceived of BriefCatch, which he formally launched in 2018. In episode 001 of Careers and The Business of Law: Legal Data Intelligence Series, Ashley Chistakis talks with David about her path from Law firm marketing to paralegal to legal operations at Siemens, “the art of the possible” in elevating the role of legal ops and eDiscovery, the three legal superpowers-- technology curiosity, relationship building, and a service mindset--that all nextGen legal data intelligence workers will need. (0:24) The Evolution of Legal Roles. Ashley Christakis introduces her role at CrowdStrike and her dual responsibilities in legal operations and eDiscovery, highlighting her efforts to elevate the legal department by enhancing internal workflows in collaboration with her team and the tech department. (1:35) Facing Challenges in LegalOps. Discussing the biggest challenges in her role, Ashley points to the need for reimagination and innovation in legal processes, along with the hurdles of technology implementation and workforce management. She emphasizes the broad scope and the inherent difficulties of making decisive choices in her field. "I would say it's the reimagination... it's really hard, at least for me individually, to make a decision.” (3:05) From Childhood Dreams to Legal Innovator. Ashley recounts her unexpected career trajectory from dreaming of being a musician or ballerina to pioneering legal technology and eDiscovery. She draws an engaging analogy between musical roles and departmental functions within a company, illustrating her creative approach to organizational dynamics. And that's LDI.” (10:19) The Superpowers of Legal Professionals. In this episode of The Geek in Review podcast, hosts Marlene Gebauer and Greg Lambert welcome Jeroen Thierens, Strategic Account Advisor, and Jorn Vanysacker, co-founder of Henchman, a Belgian legal tech company that focuses on building an intelligent drafting assistant for lawyers working on complex transactional contracts based on precedents in the firm's DMS. Vanysacker shares the story behind Henchman's founding, emphasizing the importance of solving a clear problem with a focused product strategy. The company's mission is to unlock the collective knowledge within law firms and legal departments by connecting to their document management systems, recognizing contracts and clauses, and making this information easily accessible within Microsoft Word and Outlook. Henchman serves both in-house legal teams and law firms, with a customer base spanning from boutique firms to AmLaw 200 firms. The platform addresses two main use cases: drafting transactions and assisting knowledge management teams in gaining data-driven insights to prioritize their work and boost relevant knowledge in search results. The discussion also touches on Henchman's integration with Microsoft Copilot, which aims to provide more accurate results when drafting contracts by leveraging the structured data and metadata within the platform. The company's European perspective is reflected in its language-agnostic system, which works seamlessly with multiple languages, making it an attractive solution for global law firms. Looking ahead, Vanysacker and Thierens discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI in the legal industry. While acknowledging the potential of large language models, they emphasize the importance of context and accuracy in transactional work. Henchman's approach is to use AI as a tool to enhance their product, focusing on providing the next best options rather than just the next best words, ultimately aiming to become the "Chief of Staff" for each legal professional. With the tagline “Making Knowledge Work,” the document management company iManage is enormously successful within the legal industry, with more than 4,000 customers across six continents, including 80% of the Am Law 100 and more than 40% of Fortune 100 companies. Just last year, it recently reported, it added more than 300 new law firms and companies as customers. But over the 30 years since its founding, it hit some speed bumps, of sorts, after it went through a series of acquisitions that led to its ownership by Autonomy and then by Hewlett Packard after HP acquired Autonomy in 2011. The HP-Autonomy deal famously turned into a fiasco when HP claimed Autonomy had fraudulently inflated its value, causing it to write off nearly $8.8 billion of the $11.1 billion purchase price, and the repercussions of that deal continue to reverberate, with Autonomy's founder currently on trial in San Francisco for criminal fraud charges. With iManage, through no fault of its own, caught up in that morass, its original founding management team, led by Neil Araujo, swooped in and bought back the company in 2015. It was, Araujo now says, an opportunity to reboot and apply everything they had learned about what to do and what not to do to build a successful company. Neil Araujo is our guest in this episode, to share the story of how iManage became the success it is today and to give us a preview of what lies ahead on its product and development roadmap, including its plans for expanding its use of generative artificial intelligence. . Do you need some help in changing habits to reduce stress? In this episode, Tyson discusses the importance of stress reduction and shares practical tips for managing stress in the legal profession and as a business owner.Tyson talks about the various ways to reduce stress as well as some things he has implemented. One of his tips to reducing stress is the method of box breathing. Box breathing involves inhaling for 4 seconds, holding your breath for 4 seconds, exhaling for 4 seconds and then holding your breath once more for 4 seconds. What this does is help center yourself and reach a state of calm.Another tip is to turn off notifications. People are on their phones way too much and get distracted by all the apps. It can cause a lot of stress and many people can become addicted. Tyson suggests doing this as it allows you to control the flood of information that gets to you. You can control the amount and when you absorb it.One final tip is to schedule your workouts. Realistically, if you do not schedule it, it's not going to happen. Insights into Personal Injury Law and the Role of Personal Service In the legal industry, effective marketing strategies are crucial to stand out from the competition. It's not enough to rely on word-of-mouth referrals or traditional advertising to attract clients. Digital marketing, content marketing, and public relations are just a few examples of strategies that law firms can use to build their brand and establish credibility in the industry. This time, we're sitting down with Matthew Dolman from Dolman Law Group. Matthew also is a highly accomplished personal injury attorney hailing from the sunny state of Florida. In this conversation, we delve deep into the world of personal injury law, uncovering the hurdles these legal eagles face. Matt corrects the misconception about personal injury lawyers. He shares a couple of cases he's handled. Lastly, we spent a lot of time talking about how he's firm thrived through the noise of the marketing competitions. Key takeaways: Personal injury attorneys often face negative perceptions, but providing personal attention and service can help break the mold Personal injury attorneys also represent individuals in cases involving product liability, medical malpractice, and other types of cases. Firms that actively litigate cases and take them to trial pose a risk to insurance companies Mass tort cases can be easier to pick up than single event cases, but require effort in organic outreach for maximum results Having multiple spokes in the wheel, such as partnerships and offline media, can help avoid over-reliance on one marketing strategy Having visibility and credibility through speaking engagements and expert appearances can lead to more referrals and business Personal branding and business branding go hand-in-hand All this and more, on this week's episode of Beyond 7 Figures. Stay tuned for the next episodes, where I talk with more entrepreneurs who have broken through 7 figures. So, don't forget to subscribe to the show to get that episode as soon it gets released. Until then, be profitable. Links: https://www.dolmanlaw.com/ matt@goldmanlaw.com
