Talk 7 Elm Park Baptist Church (1951-1958) Part 2 Welcome to Talk 7 in our series where I'm reflecting on God's goodness to me throughout my life. Today I'm going to tell you about my decision to follow Christ, my baptism and church membership, and my call to the ministry. My decision to follow Christ As I mentioned in an earlier talk, I cannot remember a time when I did not believe in Jesus, and, when at the age of eight I was asked by my father if I believed that Jesus had died for me, my immediate answer was yes. That was, after all, what I had been brought up to believe. But there is more to salvation than believing. Jesus began his ministry by preaching, The time has come…Repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). The fact that Jesus loved us enough to die for our sins demands a response. If we truly believe it, we will repent, because we will hate the fact that our sins made it necessary for Jesus to suffer and die in our place. And true repentance will involve not just being sorry. It will entail a decision to turn from our sin, and to dedicate our whole life to him. I made that decision in April 1953 at the age of fourteen. Why it took so long I'm not quite sure. I remember that when I was about eleven my Sunday School Teacher asked us if we would like to ‘ask Jesus to come into our hearts' and for some reason I didn't respond. I think that part of the reason was embarrassment. I didn't want my parents and some of my aunts making a fuss and saying how wonderful it was that David had ‘made a decision'. So what eventually prompted me to surrender to the claims of Christ and give my life to him? Of course the correct theological answer to that question is the convicting power of the Holy Spirit working through the preaching of the Word of God. And that must have been what was happening, although I didn't realise it at the time. For several weeks in Bible Class my father had been preaching on John 3:16. Week by week I was constantly challenged by the thought that, if God loved me so much that he gave his only Son to die on the cross and save me from my sins, surely the very least I could do would be to give my life to him. So the major driving force behind my decision to do just that was undoubtedly the love of God. But that was not the only factor. There was also the fear of hell. And I think that may have been what finally clinched it. I was made very aware of the reality of hell through the preaching of Evangelist Tom Rees one Saturday night in the Central Hall, Westminster. Elm Park was only an hour's journey from central London and a group of us had travelled in to hear him [1]. Towards the close of his sermon, he stressed the dangers of rejecting Christ, and when he made the appeal I knew that I should stand up along with the many others who were responding to his message. But once again I resisted. My pride was holding me back. I didn't want to make a public declaration that I was a sinner who needed to be saved. My baptism But the next day everything changed. There was to be a baptismal service in the evening and during the day my mother asked me if I had ever thought of being baptised, and I found myself saying yes. I understood very well that her question was not merely about being baptised. It carried with it part of the significance of baptism, the confession of Jesus Christ as my Saviour, my Lord, and my God. And so that evening when the minister made the appeal at the end of his sermon, while the congregation was singing the closing hymn, I walked forward with several other young people to indicate publicly my decision to give my life to Jesus and my desire to obey him by being baptised. The next baptismal service was arranged for July 19th, so there were several weeks to wait. But that gave us the opportunity to attend weekly baptismal classes at the ‘manse', the name given to the house where the minister lived. Each week he taught us the basics about the Christian life, paying special attention to the subject of baptism, and explaining why infant baptism, which is practised in some churches, is not biblical [2]. However, there was no teaching on the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which was something I did not hear about until I met some Pentecostal Christians a few years later. Nevertheless, I did find the minister's teaching very helpful, and I think that's why, when I became a pastor myself, I decided to provide similar classes for all those wanting to be baptised. In fact, the talks that I gave were later to form the basis of the contents of my little book, How to Live for Jesus. And of course they did include teaching on the baptism in the Spirit. When the day scheduled for the baptismal service finally arrived, the baptisms took place at the end of the Sunday evening service. The minister, who was dressed in black waterproof clothing, went down into the water first. Then, one at a time, the candidates went down to be baptised and each of us was asked by name, Do you acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your Lord, and your God? To which we replied, I do. Then the minister would say, Then on the confession of your faith and repentance towards God, I baptise you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. He then immediately baptised us, leaning us backwards into the water, dipping us right under (because that's the meaning of the word baptise) and as we came up out of the water the whole church would sing, Follow, follow, I would follow Jesus, Anywhere, everywhere, I would follow on. Follow, follow, I would follow Jesus, Anywhere he leads me I will follow on. And that is something I can honestly say I have tried to do ever since. And now, 72 years later, I have no regrets. The pathway he has led, and is still leading me on, has been wonderful. It has not always been easy, but it's been far better than going my own way. God's way is always best. Church membership After baptism, the next step was to become a church member. Of course, from the perspective of the New Testament, we all become members of the church the moment we receive Christ as our Saviour. We become members of the universal church which is comprised of all Christians, those already in Heaven, the church triumphant, and those still on earth, the worldwide church, the church militant. Our membership of that church remains permanent as long as we remain Christians. But which local church we belong to may vary from time to time according to where we are living. And, of course, in any one area there may be several different local churches, which has sadly resulted in some Christians having no real commitment to any one local church and acknowledging no real accountability to any church leadership. This is why many local churches, while recognising that all Christians who worship with them are members of the body of Christ, the universal church, nevertheless insist that to be a member of their local church a person must identify with the doctrinal beliefs of that church, acknowledge their accountability to the leadership and their fellow church members, and show a genuine commitment to that church. And that was what was expected of me when, shortly after my baptism, I asked to become a member of Elm Park Baptist Church. The application process was simple. I had to ask someone who was already a member to be my sponsor. After a friendly interview he brought a report to the next Church Members' Meeting and my name, together with the names of other young people who had been baptised at the same time as me, was put to the vote. As a result we were all accepted into membership. Church membership carried with it the privilege of being able to join in the discussions at church meetings and included the right to vote, even for those of the minimum age for membership, which was just fourteen. I always enjoyed those meetings, which were held every two months. Being able to participate in decision making meant that I felt a sense of responsibility and I was constantly aware of developments in the church programme. Now I realise that different churches operate in many different ways and that some leaders are hesitant to involve the members in this kind of way for fear of the kind of unpleasantness that I have heard has gone on in some church meetings. All I can say to that is that, in my experience, the advantages of involving the people in decision making on important matters far outweigh any disadvantages. What's more, the dangers of abuse and corruption that so often have taken place when all the power is vested in a few, or even in just one person, must be avoided at all costs. I do believe that leadership should lead, and lead by example. But to be a leader is not the same as being a dictator. If you are really a leader, people will follow you. That's why, as a church leader, I have never been afraid to ask the people to endorse any major decisions made by the leadership team. But that brings me to my call to ministry. My call to ministry As a teenager, of course, my understanding of church and church leadership was very much determined by my limited experience of Elm Park Baptist Church. Like most people then, and many people still today, I assumed that a local church must be led by a man called the minister or vicar. It was his responsibility to lead and preach at all the services and that, to do this, he needed to have received a special call from God. So when I refer to my call to the ministry I am using the expression in the way that I understood things back then. I have since come to see things very differently, and that will become evident in later talks. For now, it will be enough to say that I now understand that the word minister simply means servant and that, since all God's people are called to serve him, all God's people are in a sense ministers. But that is not to say that some people do not receive a special call to some particular area of service. In my particular case, I now realise that other people may have seen in me the potential to become a preacher long before I realised it myself. I was only fourteen when I was asked to give a short talk in the Sunday evening service at my church. It was what was called a Youth Sunday when the young people from my father's Bible class were asked to take responsibility for the service. Three of us were asked to speak for five minutes each and my father gave us help as to what we might say. That was my first experience of public speaking and, to my surprise, the following year I was invited to take on the preaching single handed. Then, another year later, I was asked to preach at the Sunday morning service. I am so grateful to the church leaders for spotting the potential that was in me and giving me the opportunity to develop it. Even then, however, although I enjoyed preaching, I did not feel any sense of call. That came when I attended a Baptist Church summer school held at Mamhead, not many miles from where I now live in beautiful Devon. Mamhead House, built in the nineteenth century regardless of cost and set in 164 acres of glorious parkland overlooking Lyme Bay and Exmouth has been described as ‘Devon's grandest country mansion'. Summer School was a holiday for young Christians which included sessions of teaching until 11:00 AM and evening meetings for worship and further teaching after the evening meal. The rest of the day was taken up with leisure activities which included trips to the nearby seaside town of Dawlish, coach trips to Dartmoor, and rambles in the countryside surrounding Mamhead. I attended Summer School there for three years in succession from 1954 to 1956. But it was in 1955 that the Lord clearly spoke to me about my future. I had completed my O Levels in 1954 and was now halfway through my A Level course and beginning to think about my future. But I wasn't particularly looking for guidance at that point as I was expecting to go to university after my A Levels and felt I had plenty of time to make up my mind. Then, one evening, after the preacher had finished speaking and we had sung the final song, the Revd. Cyril Rushbridge, who had been leading the meeting, said something like this: This isn't part of what we had planned for this evening, but I just feel that the Lord wants me to tell you how I felt my call to the ministry. He went on to explain that he had had no dramatic experience like Saul on the road to Damascus but described in a simple way how he had ‘received his call'. Unfortunately, I can't remember the details of what he said. All I can tell you is that when he had finished speaking I just knew that God wanted me to be a minister. And to clinch it, Kathleen O'Connor, a girl from our church came up to me as soon as the meeting had finished and said, David, do you now know what God wants you to do with your life? To which I replied, Yes, Kate, I'm going to be a minister. I later went and spoke with the Revd. Rex Mason, a graduate of Regent's Park College, Oxford, who had been the preacher that evening and asked for his advice. He had read English (I think) at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, before going on the read Theology at Regent's Park. He recommended that I do something similar, widening my outlook on life by taking a degree in something different before concentrating on Theology. The next thing to do was to let my parents know what had happened and, as I was away at Mamhead for at least another week, I sent them a postcard saying something like, I hope you don't mind, but I've decided to be a minister! And when I got home they told me something they had never told me before. They had prayed for this from before I was born. I also told my minister, the Revd. Leslie H. Moxham, about my call to the ministry and asked if there was anything I could do immediately to start to prepare for what God was calling me to. And he suggested that I start attending the midweek Prayer and Bible Study meeting, something I had not done because of all my other commitments to church activities. So I did what he suggested and was not disappointed. He was a great Bible teacher and I learnt a lot in those meetings, even though, as I have already mentioned, the number of meetings got me into trouble with my History teacher at school. So looking back, I am very grateful to God for my years at Elm Park Baptist and, although I was to move on when I was baptised in the Spirit in 1959, my remaining years there were to prove some of the most exciting and significant years of my life. But that's the subject of the next talk. [1] Incidentally, in the years that followed we also went several times to hear Billy Graham during his visits to Haringey, Earls Court, and Wembley Stadium. [2] Please see Chapter Thirteen of You'd Better Believe It where I show the biblical reasons for saying this.
Pastor David MorrisonJonah had been running because the Lord had told him to give a message. Jonah was running from the creator of the seas and found himself in the storm.- Jonah 1:2 (NLT)The sailors offered God a sacrifice and vowed to serve Him!God Rescues the Pagan Sailors- Jonah has been running from God, and he doesn't want to do what God says so much that he is willing to leave his country and go as far in the opposite direction as possible! So, they cast Jonah overboard, and God sends a great fish; Scripture says...it doesn't mention a whale, and it swallows Jonah, and he lives in the belly of the whale for 3 days and nights.God Miraculously Rescues Jonah- So, while in the belly of the fish, he cries out to God in prayer: - Jonah 2:1-3a, 7-9 (NLT)- Jonah vows to do what the Lord says, as though he were surrounded by death. God hears him and is his salvation! Then the Lord tells Jonah to go to Ninevah and deliver the message He gave him, "Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are."Jonah goes to Ninevah. It's a massive city, so big it takes three days to walk across, and he walks in one day and says a few words. It almost feels done halfway.Jonah 3:4b (NLT)- The people of Ninevah, including the king, heard the message, repented, and declared three days of fasting and mourning, even for the animals.Jonah 3:10 (NLT)God Rescues the People Of Ninevah- This is good news, right!? Not in the eyes of Jonah. Ninevah was the Capital of the empire of Assyria, a massive empire that was taking over part of the world. They did this ruthlessly and under the authority of its false gods.Jonah 4:2-3 (NLT)- When a prophet says something that doesn't happen, that's not good for his prophet's street cred.Jonah 4:10 (NLT)- As I prayed about this, I was moved by the power of repentance and God's forgiving nature! The Old Testament presents a picture of the Gospel, the Good News of God's Grace! In this story, God rescues a group of filthy pagan sailors who say they will serve God now. He rescues a rebellious prophet who ran from God and wasn't obedient with a good attitude, and then He rescues a group of people known for their brutality, who simply repent!"Repentance is a change of mind, heart, and direction." - David's Sunday School Teacher.- True repentance is like Jonah, who went 2,500 miles in the opposite direction - it is a change! It is one thing to recognize that God's grace is available to all people; it's another to accept that this is possible for people who have harmed you. When extending grace becomes personal, you realize just how powerful it is. God's grace doesn't rely on your approval, but Scripture also says that the measure we use will be returned to us. Here is the wild thing: sometime later, the people of Ninevah invaded Israel and Judah and captured the holy land. God forgave a people that he knew would sin again in the future. As I began to examine how Jonah's life mirrored Christ's, I realized that Jesus started His ministry on earth in a region near Galilee, where Jonah was from.Matthew 4:17 (NLT)- The message was simple: repent, for God is among us, and His kingdom is coming. So, turn from serving the wrong things and follow me.Matthew 12:39-40 (NLT)- Jonah foreshadowed the resurrection of Christ, who died to restore God's relationship with humanity and demonstrate His authority to do these things! He cares about you so much...- He offers an opportunity to repent and turn to Him.- He offers you a chance to stop running from the call that He has placed on your life.- He offers You a call to extend grace to those that you would rather not.He cares about you so much that, like Jonah, He invites you to answer a question: Shouldn't I feel sorry for such a great city?Do you share the burden that God has for others? Do you share the love for the unlovable that God has?

When the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints rejected Jeffrey Lundgren from both a position as the Kirtland Temple Guide and Sunday School Teacher, his already disturbing beliefs became completely unhinged. Having already developed a following of individuals within the church, he convinced many of them that it would be their Godly mission to oust the current church elders and recapture the Temple to bring about a long time mormon belief. As the plan took shape, Jeffrey's vision grew increasingly violent. Fortunately for the church, local police became suspicious and began working with the FBI to put a stop to the plan. Unfortunately for Jeffrey's followers, he caught on and the plans changed along with who he condemned. They would instead go out to live in the wilderness for a time to meet Jesus. He insisted they could only do so if they rid themselves of the worst sinners and according to him that was a family with 3 young children. "My parents pushed me to do my best," say Gina. "They had high expectations all the way." It didn't help Gina's cause that one of her teachers told her mother that "you could be an outstanding student if you tried." But in time the message paid off.Now a proud mother of three and a Childbirth Attorney, Gina works full time as did her mother. It's that balance of working all day and time to spend with kids after school on the field, cheering them on from the sidelines.Susan or Sue, "was the brains behind the operation" says my guest about her mother working full time as the VP of "Champion Screw Machine Engineering" in Michigan. Sue was also passionate about playing her guitar. She performed regularly at the Contemporary Services at their local church in addition to being a Sunday School Teacher. One of the most significant messages Gina has learned from her mom is to be non-judgmental. Grandmother and daughter had similar personalities and when ever the three grandkids went to spend time with their grandmother, she was sure to drop everything and loved spending every minute with them. Gina was so proud to have been asked to deliver the eulogy at her grandmother's funeral service. My guest's message comes from the heart and as a Childbirth Attorney, she wants couples to be prepared and aware of the nuances of a delivery room and the benefits of choosing the best doctors possible to help ensure the delivery of a healthy baby and a happy mother.Gina's recent book is titled "A PARENT'S GUIDE TO A SAFER CHILDBIRTH- EXPECTING THE BEST:USING THE POWER OF KNOWLEDGE TO HELP YOU DELIVER A HEALTHY BABY.”A childbirth attorney for over 20 years, Gina wants to give her readers the tools to prevent any accidents that may possible take place in the delivery room. She delves into what happens during birth and trying to figure out from the delivery team what exactly happened. Her goal is to help parents prepare for child birth to make sure these mistakes and complications don't happen during the birth, so they can have a healthy baby and mother. She suggests that getting involved before birth can help save lives. I just would to express something; please keep in mind that brick and mortar doesn't make a church, people do. People can also divide or break a church too. You may hold a church service anywhere at any time. At a coffee shop, on a park bench, on a motorcycle, online, in your living room, on your back deck… And we all should and need to attend church, please see my article at this link: https://purposeprinciplespassion.com/2020/05/20/3502/ Some churches or denominations and “Boards of Elders” and/or “Deacons” do not get this. It is the gathering of believers seeking knowledge, wisdom, repentance, to learn, serve, grow, get equipped and go out to make to Disciples whom make Disciples. Granted we need the biblical organization and storehouses as described in the bible. However, NEVER forget people are the church! I personally have been a Deacon, an Elder, a Church Treasurer, a Sunday School Teacher, a Missionary, a Ministry Leader of multiple ministries, a Pastors “right hand man”, and been involved in church for a very long time. Church was never meant to be a museum for saints, artifacts, fancy worship theatrics, craft coffee, man made doctrine, human bureaucracy, clicks, favoritism of the whom has and whom has not, for whom tithes more and whom tithes less, whom has recognized talents and whom does not, whom may have a certain social class and connections and whom does not. We are all human, we all bleed the same, and we are all sinners only saved by grace. We are to love others to the cross by our Godly wisdom, not of our human flesh. We are to love the hell out of others with empathy, love, mercy and grace. It is not about organized religion, or being adhered to a man made doctrine or denomination. It is about building, delivering, or sending a hospital for sinners, and we are all sinners, to love others, accept them, and walk along side them to lead them to the cross and an understanding of what a relationship with Jesus Christ is all about. To have Jesus as our example to strive to be like. To speak, lead, serve, teach, and love like Jesus. And to me it is not longer the acronym of WWJD (What Would Jesus Do), it should be DWJD, (Do What Jesus Did). I'm not perfect here, by far. I've made mistakes, I've failed and offended. But I have learned a bit along the way and read, feel, believe with both head and heart knowledge that I know what the Gospel says after over 30+ years reading. studying, and humbly trying to mold it into my life; while being involved in church more than half my life; that more than not a lot of churches simply do not get it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/purposeprinciplespassion/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/purposeprinciplespassion/support

Nana's Summertime Treats by Sharon RogersAs far as my family can remember, from back in the early 1960s up to the present, most summers when school is out African American children are sent down South to stay with close family members, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, to learn how to work the fields or just for free child care. In those days, we truly believed in the scripture that says, "I am my brother's keeper" (Genesis 4:9).This story is about a little girl named Kiari in the twenty-first century, and the routine continues. Kiari is taught that Nana, her grandmother, does her share to keep the family going. What Kiari learns is that being a good cook is hard work. Today's message, entitled “The Christian's Privileges and Responsibilities Toward God” was preached from Romans 12:1-2 by Dr. J. Ralph McIntyre at Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The announcements for the day included a Sunday School attendance report, an invitation to the evening service for the ordination of Doug Miller, and an invitation to be present for the WMU meeting featuring W.T. Robertson, missionary to Vietnam as the special speaker. A ladies trio then blessed the congregation with the singing of "I Am Not Worthy" followed by the congregational singing of "All Creatures of Our God and King" and "I Will Sing of My Redeemer". Following a selection by the choir Dr. McIntyre gave the church family a stewardship challenge for the month of February. Dr. James Henry, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and superintendent of Chattanooga City Schools gave his testimony as to the value of tithing to the Lord's work. Hello, vitality seekers. This is your host, Caroline Schafer. Please help me welcome Josh Hicks. Josh is an Army veteran who has a crazy, amazing personal triumph story. He has lost 60 pounds and went on to competitive bodybuilder. Please go to my Facebook page and see his transformation picture. It is unbelievable! He is an independent certified health coach and the owner of Hicks Health Coaching. Josh has been transforming bodies and lives for two and a half years now. And I can't wait to share his story. It is truly inspirational. Welcome, John. Hey, it's good to see it. Thanks for having me on today. Absolutely, I love your story. I love the idea to help motivate people that change is possible, and you are such an exemplary example of this. So please, let's start there. Let's start with your story. I know you are a veteran and I thank you for that. Let's start where it all began. Wow. What a story, you know, , I'll take you back a little bit. I really want to encourage you as listeners to just really hear this. You know, a lot of times as we go through life, we all have a lot of life happening that sometimes we miss some key elements of a conversation piece that could really help us move forward in our own journey. So I really would encourage you today, just unplug a little bit and disconnect from where you currently are, the things that might be limiting you and your own disbeliefs of, obstacles that you're facing to really hear this message, because I'm going to tell you I was at a place for a very long time, where I felt like everything was happening to me and nothing was happening for me. And this can be such a crippling factor that holds you back from what's really inside of you that's great in each and every one of you that hear this There is something incredible and unique that's with you. That sometimes it's just a length of time and period of time that passes before you actually tap into that. And I want to take you down a memory lane with me and where I've really started and how I became to the person that I am today and really finding that greatness within myself. And hopefully by hearing this will compel you to challenge yourself to become that best version of you. As a little kid, I can remember, you know, always having insecurities. Insecurities crippling me from as long as I can remember, and we all have them, but just like we have insecurities, we all have a safe place. It could be physical or in our minds. And we go there a lot more than we care to admit if we're really honest and vulnerable with ourselves. For me, one of my safe places was running to my grandparents' house. I grew up in a very abusive home. I saw my mom beaten from a young child and to my early adult life, really. And it was a really hard thing for me to cope with. I saw some things that you can't unsee.. See, it was really difficult for me to really challenge my way of thinking and overcome those obstacles in my own mind. So I became very insecure. And I would deal with that stress and unhealthy ways, really. And if we're honest with ourselves, we can really relate to this areas in our lives, that we are stressed to the max , and we've run to a safe place that may not really be serving us very well. I never really dealt with these insecurities and it followed me, you know, until I became a young adult, really just trying to find my way. I became a person that didn't want to ever experience a broken home. I went through a divorce while I was able to break that generational curse of domestic violence. I wasn't able to break the generational curse of divorce. So I had a separated home for my children, and I had to figure out how to cope with that. I grew up in church. I had a praying mother and I'm so thankful for that. I didn't have the opportunity to have a relationship with my father, but that doesn't limit to me for what I can do for others and how I can be the father from mine. So I want you to really meditate on that. The things that you may or may not have had in your past, don't limit you from becoming or having in your future. It's a choice we're always faced with choices every single day but I want you guys to understand that it's not easy. It's not easy facing those adversities and facing those areas where you've tried to kind of just sweep them under the rug, but it's necessary because it really defines and molds who you will become or who you won't become, really. I love the expression. Choose your hard. You know, you can either pick feeling horrible, about yourself, eating the wrong things and when everyone else is eating Doritos and you're eating celery sticks and working out in the gym at 6:00 AM that, you got to pick your hard and I know where mine lies. That's 100%. I mean, you absolutely do. And I, and I say in this. Ordinary is a choice, but so it's extraordinary. And we get hung up on that. We get hung up on complacency, keeping us in an average lifestyle when we desire so much more, but we won't contend for what we desire because we take what we can have at the moment. And it holds us back. And often times, when we take what we can have at the moment versus what we desire a little piece that was hangs out in that safe place. I ended up finding myself one day, really struggling. I remember having a Sunday school teacher one day telling me just as a young boy. Wow. You have so much positivity inside of you. And I didn't really know that Sunday school teacher. Well, and she didn't really know me very well, but it stuck with me that someone saw something in me that I didn't see. I'm telling you there's something in you. I started with that and I really want to leave you with that today. My life didn't turn out exactly how I anticipated it to be. I got lost along the way. And that's okay. Because it all came together for the greater good, and that is what counts most. So that Sunday school teacher said something that was impacting and resonated with me to my bones. The power of words, right? Words have meaning words have meaning. And we tell ourselves things all the time. We don't realize how crippling they really are. You don't even have to voice it, that little voice inside your mind. That's verbalizing all the time, internally you're telling yourself things as a mind monkey. Yeah. You know, it, it stops you from getting up with a certain attitude. Some days you get out of bed and you, and you anticipate to have an attitude of gratitude, but really you had stinky thinking you started catastrophizing and realizing all the things that you had to deal with versus what you had to be grateful for. Right. And this kind of mindset can really move a person. Or keep wanting to digress. You're not meant to digress. We need to continually move forward and become better each day. And it starts with the mental piece. You fast forward in my life. I went through some obstacles there. I went through a divorce yet life happens, but how do you recover from it? It's a choice. It's a decision that you make. So I ended up not doing what I thought I was called to do. I would want it to be a pastor. I wanted to lead people, but I got divorced and, you know, I wasn't able to churches didn't really adhere to that calling from me because of my past. So it kind of felt like it was limiting me. And this is where add though, that makes that, that makes me sad because you learn best from your mistakes. I feel like you you've learned and then you can help others with your new found knowledge, but people won't let you. It's a hundred percent, right? I mean, you learn. That's why history is so important. We learn what not to do from the mistakes that we made yesterday. Absolutely. We can't control our circumstances sometimes, but what we can absolutely always control is the feeling that's attached to that circumstance and feeling bring results because your feelings will actually give you the tendency or the commitment to act on. And this is where you've got to take your thoughts captive. Now, for me, I couldn't figure out how to overcome this. I was depressed in a lot of ways, disappointed in myself for failures and not being able to do what I really felt like God was calling me to do. But if you look at where I'm at now, 10 plus years, I'd say I'm doing a pretty big thing for God, and that's awesome, but you can't always see things when you're in the middle of it, but you have to tap into this greatness that's inside of you. You it's a must. This is starting with your mental piece. You have to get really intentional in the mind. I ended up running so far from what I wanted to do, trying to fill those voids with other things that were just picking me further on a digress. I love that I got to serve in the military. There was a lot of great things that came out of that for me, a lot of personal development. But I remember when I went into the national guard, I was in bootcamp and I remember them telling me something the fastest way out is through it. And that stuck was me, oftentimes we're looking for the fastest way to something or the fastest way out of something. There's no easy way to get to where you want to be, you have to be willing to do what's necessary in order to win. It goes without saying that everybody that's listening to this call today, you want to win. Rather that's in a financial matter, whether that's in your relationship matters, whether that's in your personal health journey somewhere, you have some areas that you are really just surviving and you want to be thriving, stop waiting for that, to come to you and figure out exactly what it takes. So that way you can get there. It will not be easy all the time, but it will absolutely be worth it every time. I remember being on that. And I was when I was serving and my insecurities came back in a big kind of way. Many people don't talk to you about their fears. So outspokenly, they put on this facade that they've got to be this hard person, but we all have a vulnerable side too. You have to be able to identify with that so you can overcome it. Otherwise it will lean into you and not you lean into it. I was telling you. was a deployment that was supposed to be pretty easy until the tempo changed drastically. And I was hugging my pillow and I was crying, asking God, why am I here? What is the purpose of this? Why, how did I even get to this place that I am? And I got to that place for a reason. But part of that reason that brought me there was because I was running and trying to fill in voids with something or anything didn't even know what it was. And you fast forward, I got through that deployment, right? Because we get through the things, even when we feel like we can't, you might be in a situation right now. Like, how am I going to get through this? You will get through it. I got home. I have a beautiful wife. I started in construction business. I named this business Godly Installments. I created this business with my wife. We knew nothing about running a business. I new construction. Well, because I had a background. But when it came to running my own business, there was a lot to learn a lot of room for growth, but there was a whole lot of error along the way. The business grew faster than I anticipated, which was a good thing in one way, but it became a hindrance in a lot of other ways. I wasn't liquid. I didn't have the financial backing. I couldn't get loans. I wasn't mature enough in the business world for banks to give me those loans. And I was looking for ways. To make quick cash to support the business that I had grown because I had people working now that I couldn't figure out how to make payroll every Friday. I couldn't pay these, these subs and these workers every Friday. Right. So I did something, I looked for the fastest way out of a mess and it got me into a bigger mess. I took one of those quick payday loans. And while I'm not saying they can't be beneficial, For me and where I was in my maturity with the business, it wasn't beneficial for me. My wife would look at me on Thursday evening and say, we've got this bill due. We've got these people to pay and we don't have the money. Monday through Friday, every single week without hesitation, I would pray and I would ask God to continue to provide for us. Now it required action. You can ask and ask and not get nowhere. If you think I'm just going to ask or hope for something to happen. There was a lot of action, even if it wasn't necessarily. The greatest action steps in order to get me to a more successful venture. But I was praying and I was moving in faith and doing everything I possibly can. And he does a lot with a little, because every single week by Friday, sometimes checks didn't clear or they might've bounced. But by Monday there was something in there from a deposit to cover and keep the cashflow, there was enough to keep these workers going. And I remember people asking me why won't, why won't you just file bankruptcy? It was so deep, the mess that we were in with contracts that needed to be fulfilled and what needed to happen. That we couldn't just take the easy road out. Just takes care of it again, the fastest way out of it is through it. I told you in the very beginning, I struggled from a childhood just being insecure, being scared, seeing and be exposed to physical abuse. I remember standing in the kitchen and I heard this loud thump and my mom crying and saying, look what you did to my face and she asked me if I would come into the kitchen real quick, being the older brother, I had to take one of those wind up cameras and take a picture of my mom's eyes and she could send it to the commissioner. She got kicked so hard that her entire side of her right side of her face, her eye was swollen shut. She walked around with the sunglasses on for days. There's some things you just can't on. See, it sets those insecurities in further. When I got out of the army, I now had kids and I felt like I was failing at all areas trying to make a better life for me and my family start a construction business insecurity set in trying to find a safe place to go to can't run back to moon pub hops, where I used to always run. When I was scared. You have a safe place in your mind that you run too. You can't always run there. It's not going to serve you and move you forward. You have to lean into those moments. You have to identify the fears with the facts and start telling yourself the truth and not identifying with stories because the stories that we put in our minds are not the realities that have to be, unless we choose to. So I remember getting through this, this business escapade and I went three and a half years, praying that same prayer every single day, doing the actions, staying awake, Saturdays and Sundays thinking, how am I going to get through the next week? How can I possibly continue to keep jobs coming in so we can keep the cashflow move and to some degree to get, get the current jobs and contracts that we have done complete it and satisfied customers. It was sleepless nights, was stressful. My body was really just, it was taking a toll on me. I came home from a deployment , struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, you know. Here I am trying to get myself together, mentally. My physical health is struggling. Now. My finances are down the drain. Meanwhile, my wife, I can't even look at her with any kind of pride because I feel like as a husband, I'm not giving my family what they need. I remember being in the gym one day, I was working out in a small gym right here in Maryland, just trying to outwork the bad diet. And I'm going to tell you right now for any of you that are, are in that situation once your health, and you think that you're going to go to the gym, you're gonna your cardio and you're going to combat the weight loss. Let me just put a disclaimer on that for you. You cannot work a bad diet. It starts with your food. I didn't know that nor did I care about it. I was eating my feelings many times. We definitely bring food in as comfort to mask other situations we don't want to deal with. Well guess what?rsThat was the day in March when my life was going to radically change. And this is one of the places where people get hung up so much on really moving forward and propelling to the place they want to be. They are so afraid to fail that they won't even try. They will live on the excuses and the victim mindsets that will hold them back from becoming the best version of themselves because they see everything as. Not an opportunity for them. It's nice for some, but not for all. Well, I can tell you, I was at a place where I was desperate to change. Didn't know what I needed, but knew I needed something. There was a guy from Malaysia, it was traveling through Maryland happened to be in the gym at the same time I was, that was a divine appointment. He came to me and he said, oh, sorry, I get a little emotional because I know where I was. He said, um, you remind me a lot of myself and, um, I want to talk to you for a minute. I gave him a short answer because I didn't feel like talking to anybody. I had no money, so I didn't, wasn't interested in some sales scam, and I wasn't in a place mentally where I had any interest of talking to anybody that wasn't going to serve me well. So I gave him the short answer and gave him my business email and figured I'll never hear from this guy again anyway. Now, financially struggling. I'm 60 pounds overweight and my mental health is just in the tubes to a stranger coming from across the globe.Walks up to me at a random has a conversation about how I reminded him a lot of himself. That's power. That's a call for change. And I'm telling you right now you have signs and opportunities right in front of you that you're missing because you're so buried in the feelings that you can't see the facts. I got home, I looked at that email. And I don't know why, but I was moved to do it. I knew I want to change. I knew I certainly wanted to look better than I felt. And I went ahead with a complete stranger and signed up for a program. Now my wife was not happy. She's looking at me like you just bought a box of food from a stranger, you know, nothing about, you're probably never going to eat and we cave and pay our workers. Much less our own bills. Look at my van. She said she had a Honda Odyssey van and this thing had been through it. The driver's side door would fall off the hinges if you open it. So we knew not to open that side. I took the van to the carwash, but I forgot to tell the people at the car wash not to open the slider door when they vacuumed it out, the door was ripped off the hinges and there was a string of traffic behind me. I was so embarrassed and ashamed. The owner wasn't their fault, but the such a graceful guy is so humble and kind, he came over to me. He gave me a $10 gift certificate and said, I'm really sorry that this happened now at the time, I was thinking, God, when is enough enough? I've been through enough already. Can we move on from this life? And I remember like it was yesterday. I picked up my pride and my ego got the van door back on the hinges and it took about 35 minutes. It felt like it took 10 hours because you got all these people staring at you and it's like, so embarrassing, but you know what? I didn't do. I didn't run from it. I let them vacuum the car out that day. I finished what I started, even though I was ashamed, I was holding my head down. I didn't want to be there any longer. And from that point forward, I got very intentional. I started doing extreme things to make extreme growth in my life, my finances, my personal development and my physical transformation I bought this program. It was the best, thing that I could have ever did because I need to change. It's not about the program. It's about the habits that I change using the program as a tool to really get me where I want to be. I started dropping weight, feeling better, having energy and really getting to a better place and better frame of mind because I started being intrinsically awakened to bad habits, bad mindsets and routines that really needed to change. And I started slowly changing these patterns and habits, and I started coaching this program to, I want to inspire others with my journey. I didn't even have a Facebook at the time. So I was like, I was telling my wife, I'm going to use your Facebook. I was taking pictures and putting them on Facebook, showing my transformation week by week because I wanted to help other people feel the way that I felt. That's awesome. And it was, it was so amazing. It was so freeing because I felt like for the first time, in a long time that I was doing something that I knew made me feel good. I put all kinds of structural tension in place. Here I am an overweight construction worker. I signed up for a bodybuilding competition at the same time. I went in for this all natural bodybuilding competition. I had some, some judges that were looking at me before I was even remotely ready and telling me you don't want to do this. You're going to look emaciated on stage is you need to give yourself another year or so. I decided at that point in time that nobody tells me I can't become what I desired to become. And you need to tell yourself that take a second right now and look at yourself in the mirror. Wipe your eyes out for the tears running down in the pain that you have, and the shame that you have, pick your chest up, pick your chin up and say it. Nobody tells you that you can't have the life that you deserve. Because you can, if you choose to. Right, I love Gary V., He is on that parade about, you know, don't worry about what everybody else thinks and nobody should be judging anybody else. And I love that, it's so true. And we all tend to do that, but you really got to get that out of your head or otherwise you can not move forward. So this story comes to some breakthrough in March of 2019, I said yes to a bodybuilding competition as a 60 pound overweight construction worker with a failing business. Really my family is failing in a lot of ways and I wasn't there providing the way that I had anticipated to October of 2019 walking on stage for the first competition ever in my life took first place in an all natural men's classic physique competition. And that was the beginning of great things starting. I said yes to a program that I knew nothing about, but I knew I need to change and change requires doing things your, scary to do at times it's the necessary. From that point forward, I continue to be very intentional about what it is that I wanted to create for myself, from my family, my friends and people that I'd never even met yet. So I continued to this day to help people all across the nation really become awakened to what their goals are, what their why is and show them a vehicle that can really help them. If they are really ready to make them changes. I will post that picture of your before and after, that is an incredible transformation that you made, I must say and that should be very motivating for our listeners. You don't have to do bodybuilding competitions, but, if you lose the weight, you feel better, you're guaranteeing your health, and future. So much better of an option, because most people choose to try to make a decision when they get some kind of verdict from the doctor. That's not a good time. So do it now! So, yeah, you fast forward 2021, I'm so grateful, I'm humbled and honored to say that, uh, God installments is a business that no longer exist, is a. And it was a connecting flight to bring me to where I am now. Sometimes we can't see the things that God's doing, but he's doing big things in our lives and he's just preparing us for the journey. It's a preparation. And so we're honored to be here on this call today with you. We live a completely different life today. The grind is worth it, but you are worth it.nautAnd that you need to understand. I love when we talked earlier, you said, giving people an awakening or having an awakening yourself, would you speak more on that? Yeah, a hundred percent. One of the leading causes to death, across the cross, the globe really, emotional mismanagement. You know, we are so emotionally mismanaged. And the biggest reason for that is because we keep measuring our lives. Current reality on the stories that we tell ourselves and stories are not facts, feelings are not facts. That's so true. It's so true. And I, you know, the more I learn about psychology and neurology and all those things, that is what amazes me is that we get any. Tony Robbins say release things publicly. It no longer hold you prisoner. And yeah, I think that's such an awesome thing to think about and When they do, it's like so many people can resonate now with that and feel comfort in knowing that they're not alone and look at how they pulled themselves together and that. There is a possibility of some happiness and good times. I had a, if you just choose to make the change, I love that emotional mismanagement. So love those words. That's awesome. So, tell me, about maybe a client of yours, maybe one quick success story. You know, I have so many of them that I love to celebrate, but I, but I'll tell you one. You know, a lot of people, um, again, are looking for a short, quick fix. They want to take some pill. And I mean, what about, we're talking about real health here. We're talking about this is your body. You get one body and how you fuel it will determine the state of health it'll be in, you know, if you're really looking for ultra health and I want to say this real quick, this is so important. I hear people say, I'll do anything for my family. I'll do anything. But when it comes to taking care of yourself, will you do that? We look, we don't think twice about going through a quick, fast food joint or getting something off of a grill menu. We don't look at the research of it. We don't look at how processed it is or high-glycemic it is or how it can lead to be addictions to food. We just do it. But when you tell somebody, I want to give you a, an opportunity to really help you, with good dense nutrition that's made from whole food. Well, I got to research that. Yeah, Amen to that thought. So true. Yeah. So, one person that comes to mind for me is, a lady named Denise. She's just an awesome, awesome person. And I got so many of them, but, you know, we got to celebrate with her in a lot of ways, because not only did she get healthy, she became a coach as well. You know, when she got, she became a coach during her journey, just so you understand. Yeah. A lot of people have this common misconception. If you don't have six pack, abs you can't coach somebody that's, that's not remotely true. Okay. I would be, I would venture to tell you that if you're that vein and you're in body image that you feel like you have to have some ultimate physique before you can lead somebody else, I would tell you that I would really re rethink that because it's not that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, The accountability and structure that will hold for your own self and accountability level to coach somebody else, it will actually measure your own success to help you stay successful in your own health journey. Now, I'm not saying that you can't have to be in some different kind of frame of mind, right? If you have a bad relationship with food, you probably shouldn't be trying to tell somebody else to have a better one. But my point to that is that there's a time and a place for everything. And sometimes we limit where we can actually be based on the conclusion that we need to be. Beyond that first, right? Yes. Sorry. And don't yeah, it doesn't have to be perfect. I've learned all about that in the past year. It's not my natural go-to. but yeah, I've learned that. Just kinda jump and build your wings on the way down. So. Yeah, but she's optimizing her weight, which is amazing. She's a school teacher, you know, and here she was, last year, on a mountain top in Arizona, you know, climbing a mountain top because she was in a place in her health where she could do that. And we were with her and we were there to be able to celebrate and be part of that with her. And that's amazing. You know, and how many of mountain tops do you guys that are here in this right now? How many mountain tops do you have in your life that you want to climb physical or emotional? Spiritual. Right. But you're not because you feel like you're not in a good frame of mind, not in good mental or physical health to do it, but what if you could change. Yes, so true. And that that's very symbolic is the, for the mountain, everybody has their mountains. And, but if you just stick one foot in front of the other and start, you know what I mean? That that's how you'll get there. You're not going to get there, just standing at the bottom, looking up, you know. Okay. So my last question, my signature question is, if there was one thing that you could eliminate from the world, what would it be and why? If there was one thing I could eliminate from the world, it would be self doubt. It will be self doubt. Uh, you know, I, I say, I tell you that $10 gifts to pick a card because I want you to put a $10 gift certificate in your wallet and say no more, no more. Do you need anybody to discount your greatness? Ooh, that's so perfect. I love words. And that was so awesome because you have a discounted card and you don't need a discount in your life. That is good. A lot of really successful people have those little reminders I call them triggers, um, that you carry around with you. It could be a mission statement, it could be a picture. Wasn't it. Jim Carrey, who wrote a million dollar check and he carried it in his wallet or something. One of those things are very powerful. Don't discount them. They truly do work, but that is such a great answer. I love that. Josh tell our listeners where they can contact you. You guys can find me on Facebook. If you're a mutual friend here with Caroline, you can just find me right through there, but Josh Hicks, I'm public. I'm easy to find. I have a transformation picture. You guys can also send me a text message if you want it. My cell phone and we can put that in the comment. Absolutely. I will do that. And I'm going to stick that picture right on my Facebook page, because that speaks volumes, you know, that how much change is possible. And that was a pretty quick turn to on your end. Pretty amazing. Like most people take is years to get there. But you had a man on a mission. You were on a mission. I thank you so much for sharing your story. It was truly inspirational and I hope people got value from that. Um, please like, and subscribe if you did. And I just want to remind all our listeners life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself. Thanks Josh. Thank you.
What does progressive Christianity look like in an increasingly secularized world? We sat down with Preston Meyer, the host of the Holy Watermelon podcast and a Sunday school teacher from Canada, who dispels some myths some people may have about Christianity and Mormonism, such as the notion that Mormons primarily go door to door proselytizing or that Sunday school is just for children. We cover topics like whether or not religion is a tool, the role of questioning religious doctrine in the church and how that manifests as tension between Biblical literalists and the Christians who believe Christianity is more about values and a belief in a loving God, whether or not having more Christians in the world would create a more moral society (spoiler: Preston doesn't think so), whether or not it makes sense for Christians to retreat into more secluded communities to protect their values as the mainstream world becomes more secular, and the role of religion in the world in the next 20-30 years. Teaching children things of the Lord is an honor and a high calling. Children have boundless energy and may appear distracted, but they are capable of understanding biblical truths even adults have a hard time grasping. Children's minds are easily impressed with new thoughts, whether good or bad, and will remember many of their young lessons for the rest of their life. Adults and churches tend to provide entertainment to occupy the children, but children ought to have our undivided attention. Jesus said, let the little children come to me. They were worthy of His time and devotion, and they are worthy of ours. Expect to be challenged and inspired as you read this classic from Charles H. Spurgeon. Learn how to enlarge your heart for all types of children, learn what lessons are best, and learn what results to expect. May this helpful little book be the catalyst for many new or improved shepherds of the Lord's lambs.

Jordan Peterson could easily be called "The Most Interesting Man In The World." He is the sceptic's Sunday School Teacher, reinvigorating the need for religion in the minds of millions who thought even the idea of God is passé. He has been the pastor to many encouraging them to "clean their room" because, like Moses' serpent, that simple act will change their lives. Billy Graham would smile at his impact. Yet Peterson has not publicly declared himself a Christian or even a believer in God. He is quite an enigma. Today we talk to Matthew R. Petrusek, co-author with Christopher Kaczor of Jordan Peterson, God, and Christianity. My "Good Guys" series continues on the podcast! It seems as though the expectations of romance and love in the church has been skewed quite a bit and porn in all its varied expressions has had a role to play. I once told ya'll, it felt as though men of faith were looking for a mix of a "Sunday School Teacher & a Porn Star..." An expectation and fantasy we as women feel we can't fully live up to (Hello Comparison Game) and a fantasy that robs men of true intimacy with a real live woman. So yes. we are going there sweet fam! And I can't wait for you to hear this convo! Sathiya Sam has a passion to see people come alive. He is described as being a "Brilliant communicator" and "Clever innovator." He's created music, books and courses to help people around the world live a life of freedom. Lady Cassaundra Webb I was born in a little town called Nacogdoches, TX on November 25, 1968 (actually the oldest town in Texas and the home of the Stephen F. Austin State University). I am a mother of five children, grandmother of two precious little girls; and have been married for 21 years to one man Elder Jack Webb. I was raised in the community of Pine Flat, Texas and my church home was Pine Flat C.M.E. While a member, I served as the Sunday School Teacher, member of the choir, and also taught Mission class. I was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost in July of 1993 at Wood's Memorial COGIC under the pastor, Supt. Chester Robinson. One Sunday night, after service I randomly walked up to Supt. Robinson and he spoke these words to me, “You look like you ought to be saved”. Those words anchored themselves deep in my spirit. I used what he said to make up my mind that I needed JESUS. During a revival on a Wednesday night, the Lord did a new thing in and for me. I had been AT church all my life, but now I've been in church the actual “Body of Christ”) for over 20 years. During the years following my Spiritual Birth, I have served as a youth choir director, Sunshine and Purity Band leader, Y.P.W.W. teacher, and whatever I have found for my hands to do. I come from a long line of gospel music singers, musicians, and preachers (Moore, Tolbert, Henderson, Horn, and Hart Families). There is someone in my family that can sing, play instrument, or something. Gospel music was and is my outlet in life! If I could just get a musical praise out, everything would be alright. Some of my favorite artist were and are Shirley Caesar, Dottie People, Beverly Crawford, Vicki Winans, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Karen Clark-Sheard, Twinkie Clark-Terrell, Carolyn Traylor, Kathy Taylor, Rev. Timothy Wright, Rev. James Cleveland, Rev. James Moore, and so many more.

Pastor Sean Wilson is a native of Chicago, Ill and joined the Active Army at the age of 19. He has had the privilege of serving in several locations throughout the world in his 21 year career, to include Iraq, Germany twice, Korea, Hawaii, Missouri and North Carolina. During his time in the military he has also had the distinct pleasure of attending and being taught by some great men and women of God culminating in serving under Bishop Kelsey Lewis of Pacific Revival Center located in Honolulu, HI a Victory Church affiliate. At the age of 24, Pastor Sean knew that God had a great purpose for his life it wasn't until he was 26 when he started to commit to what he had previously heard from the Lord. Pastor Sean is serious about kingdom business and he considers himself as servants to both God and all people. He fully understands that Jesus has opened the door for all men and women unto righteousness and it's everyone's choice and responsibility to accept the call. You will often hear him quote the verse from I COR 3:6 “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow”. He believes that if he plants the seed of the true Word of Jesus and waters it with love, then God will provide the revelation to the chosen. During his journey Pastor Sean has had the opportunity to work in several different ministries along the way; Usher, Media Ministry, Deacon, Men's Ministry, Choir, Praise and Worship, Children's ministry, and Sunday School Teacher to name a few.
