When you think about ways to improve your well being, you are probably like me and think of eating better, exercising, getting outside, hydrating, maybe even taking supplements or filtering your water. But what about rest? I think because of cultural norms and values as well as the busyness that we build into our lives - rest isn't top of mind. Or maybe you think of rest as a pathway to health, but struggle like me to actually slow down and make it a priority. In this episode, I chat with Erin Taylor about rest. She is a passionate advocate for the importance of rest and recovery in our busy lives. In this episode we really focus in on what prioritizing this could look like for busy moms. I'm not gonna lie, Erin stepped on my toes in this episode - in a good way. And you might feel it too. But we really need to hear this encouragement. Listen in and discover how rest can be your new superpower. In this enlightening episode, I sit down with Grace Secker, a passionate psychotherapist and chronic pain coach specializing in the intricate connection between the mind and body. Grace shares her personal journey from experiencing chronic pain and trauma to discovering transformative healing methods that integrate emotional awareness with physical well-being. Listeners will gain valuable insights into how unresolved emotions can manifest as physical pain and learn practical tools to foster a healthier relationship with themselves. Grace's early inspiration to become a therapist stemmed from her own experiences with depression, anxiety, and trauma as a teenager. The disconnect between mental and physical health in traditional medical training often overlooks the mind-body connection. Chronic pain can be a manifestation of unresolved emotional trauma, often exacerbated by stressors in life. The concept of trauma includes both "big T" traumas (e.g., abuse, loss) and "little t" traumas (e.g., emotional neglect, bullying). Understanding one's "window of tolerance" is crucial for recognizing how individuals respond to stress and trauma. Pain reprocessing therapy focuses on retraining the brain to stop sending danger signals to the body, allowing for emotional healing. Somatic practices, including breathwork and mindfulness, help individuals reconnect with their bodies and emotions. Grace emphasizes the importance of building a better relationship with oneself to foster healing and emotional regulation. Story of a participant in Grace's program who overcame debilitating symptoms through the mind-body healing method. In this episode I'm sharing my thoughts on the tricky and not so helpful messaging of breast cancer awareness month. And then the messaging that I think would be much more helpful. After 30 years of breast cancer awareness months, don't you think it's time we actually start talking about prevention. Because we know lots of way to help prevent breast cancer, and they aren't promoting it. I'm also going to share about all the ways you can do a breast cancer screening, if you didn't know - you have lots of options beyond a mammogram. In this episode, we dive into the world of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and IV therapy with Cloe from Oxynergy2. Discover the benefits of these therapies and how they can enhance your overall health and well-being. From healing post-surgery wounds to improving mental health, Cloe shares real-life success stories and explains the science behind these treatments. Tune in to learn more about these innovative therapies and how they can complement your existing health practices. Main Points: Growing up in a health-conscious family: Chloe shares her experience of being raised in a household focused on organic, whole foods and regular exercise. She explains how this upbringing shaped her perspective on health and led her to explore alternative therapies. Understanding hyperbaric chamber therapy involves being in a pressurized vessel while breathing in pure oxygen. It helps increase oxygen levels in the body, promote healing, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow to areas that may be lacking. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted her mother to explore hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a preventive measure. They discovered its numerous benefits and decided to open Oxynergy2 to make this therapy more accessible to the community. We discusses biohacking tools offered at Oxynergy2, including targeted red light therapy, infrared sauna, biocharger therapy, lymphatic drainage massages, and IV vitamin drips. Success stories: Chloe shares inspiring stories of individuals who have experienced life-changing results through hyperbaric oxygen therapy and IV therapy, including improved wound healing, relief from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and increased mobility for individuals with neurological conditions. These therapies are meant to be used as a complement to a healthy lifestyle. She encourages listeners to do their research, consult with their healthcare providers, and consider these therapies as additional tools for optimal health. This episode helps women in perimenopause think forward and prepare the best they can for menopause. The more we prepare our bodies with these healthy living tips, the easier that transition will be. Julie Daniluk helps us have an empowered, positive mindset about going through these female changes and gives us lots of hope about what that season of life can look like. It's also a great episode for women already in menopause, as we cover lots of things that can help with challenging menopausal symptoms. Julie Daniluk is a nutritionist who specializes in helping women navigate menopause and improve their overall health. Menopause is directly tied to blood sugar levels, and controlling blood sugar is crucial for managing symptoms like hot flashes. Eating foods in the right order can make a significant difference in blood sugar levels and reduce hot flashes. Mindset is important during menopause, and embracing the transition as a time of empowerment and wisdom can lead to a more positive experience. Addressing past traumas through therapy, such as EMDR, can help improve mindset and overall well-being during menopause. Anti-inflammatory nutrition is key for managing menopause symptoms, including avoiding foods that cause inflammation and focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods. Women in menopause may need to adjust their diet and lifestyle to support hormonal balance and weight management. Getting professional help, such as testing for thyroid function and working with a nutritionist, can be beneficial for women struggling with menopause symptoms and weight gain. Building a supportive community and seeking accountability can also be helpful in navigating menopause and making positive changes to health and lifestyle. Women should consider reaching out for professional help if they experience symptoms of inflammation, such as joint pain, fatigue, or mood swings, or if they are struggling with weight management during menopause. A big part of our lives are about relationships. As moms, having healthy relationships with our kids plays a big part in our overall health. I have found, in my 17 years as a mom so far, that being present with my kids really helps foster a healthy dynamic in our relationship. When you are present with someone, it speaks to how much you value them. When your relationships are healthy and positive, especially inside the home - it reduces your stress and increases your joy. Both of which are great for your wellbeing. Erica, creative genius on family systems and creating moments of presence, joins me on this episode to share about: Planning: Intentionally schedule time to be present with your family Solid routines: Automate parts of your day to free up mental energy for being present No-tech time: Set aside dedicated periods without technology to focus on your family Clearing out clutter and distractions: Create a calm and clutter-free environment to enhance presence. It's Autism Awareness Month, and on this episode of Shifting Perspectives, we are taking a stroll back through time with Melisha Williams, the mother of a brilliant and autistic teenage son. Melisha is now, not just an advocate for her son, but a voice for parents who are walking in similar shoes. Hers is a wonderful example of how not giving up is perhaps the best thing you can do for your autistic child. Guest Bio: Melisha Williams is an ABA specialist here in the Turks and Caicos Islands. She started her journey in education in 2005 when she completed her Bachelor's Degree in English. Melisha is now dedicating her time to offering support to families, spreading awareness, and gearing towards acceptance within her community.Shifting Perspectives is a conversation with Yolande and Latasha that challenges listeners to fuel themselves with diversity in the way they think, the way they work, the way they parent and the way they live their lives.

In this episode, we hear the inspiring story of Melisha, a mother who has given birth three times and also gone through an adoption journey. Melisha shares her experience of navigating motherhood and wellness, and how it has led her to become an advocate for others.Melisha always knew that she wanted to have natural births. She felt strongly about the importance of trusting her body and allowing the birthing process to unfold naturally. She had an epidural with her first birth but it didn't work on half of her body so she got to experience what it would be like to birth medication-free. Her first two births went smoothly and without complications, and she felt empowered and proud of herself. However, Melisha's third birth was more challenging. She had back labor, and the experience was longer and more painful than she had anticipated. Despite the challenges, Melisha persevered and gave birth to a healthy baby.In addition to her birthing experiences, Melisha also shares her journey of adopting her son. She talks about the challenges and joys of the adoption process, and how it has deepened her understanding of the importance of health and wellness for all.Throughout her story, Melisha emphasizes the importance of being an advocate for yourself and others. She encourages listeners to prioritize their health and wellness for their whole family, and to be vocal about their needs and preferences. And she reminds us that even in the face of challenges, we can still find strength and resilience within ourselves.Overall, Melisha's story is a testament to the power of natural birthing, the joy of adoption, and the importance of advocating for ourselves and our loved ones.Connect with Melisha and check out her website here, her Instagram, the Daily Wellness Community, here, and check out her new podcast, The Daily Wellness Podcast here!Visit our website and blog: www.goldenhourbirthpodcast.comFollow Liz on Instagram here and Natalie hereFollow us on Facebook here.Intro Song by Carpathians (Donny Rodgers): https://carpathians.bandcamp.com/track/lavaman

Hate Networking? 5 Steps to Becoming a Social Butterfly. For this Women of Color Rise episode, Analiza talks with Melisha “Mel” Jackman, Executive Director of Brooklyn Kindergarten Society. Mel shares how she wanted to rise and have more impact, but she couldn't just depend on hard work. She needed to stop playing small and invest in her social capital and network. How did she go from a person without a LinkedIn profile to becoming a social butterfly? Try these 5 steps. Step 1: Be aware of how you feel about networking. Get to the root - Do you like it or not? If you do not like it, then there's some work that you have to do. For Mel, she needed to overcome her fear of rejection. Step 2: Practice your elevator intro. Step 3: Before you go to an event, have an intention, and do your research. Are you going to be in a corner looking at folks or are you going to jump in? Understand who will be there. Do your research, and find an organic way to start a conversation. Know why you want to meet the people that you're meeting. How would you add value to them and vice versa? It has to be two sided. Step 4: Follow up with anyone you interact with through an email. Try to get a connection. Be clear about what you are going to talk about. Are you pitching something or are you genuinely invested in their organization? Are you looking for a job? Step 5: Finally, at the very end of the day, you have to be confident. If you are nervous about networking, you've got to dig deep. What is that about? When you get your mindset in the right place, you can feel much more comfortable networking and building relationships. In addition to networking, Mel also shares the power of community and how participating in Boss Mamas helped her have a safe space to help and be helped by others. A former advertising copywriter and magazine editor, Melisha Mitchell stumbled into the world of adoption reform in 1996 after reconnecting with the daughter she had lost to adoption during the infamous Baby Scoop era. Over the next two decades, Melisha launched the White Oak Foundation, a non-profit focused on helping adoption triad members circumnavigate Illinois´ closed record laws, and spearheaded the movement to overturn her home state's outdated adoption statutes. Her efforts led to Illinois becoming the 9th U.S. state to release original birth certificates to all adult adoptees upon request and, through her Foundation, the reunification of thousands of Illinois adoptees with their families of origin. On today's episode of Felony Friday John is joined by Melisha Johnson. Melisha did over 10 years in prison for wire fraud. She was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to 144 months. On November 18th she was released to home confinement due to the Cares Act. Melisha will be the first to admit that she made a mistake and deserved to be punished, but serving more than tens years in prison far exceeds what should be considered a fair punishment for the crime she committed. Like so many past guests Melisha has exposed that the justice system is not about justice and reform, it's about control and extortion. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Limitless Conversations with Melisha Reddy A GBV Story 'It was just once' Gender-based violence is a pervasive issue in South Africa. Today on the show, we bring you a real story - not about a victim, but about a survivor of Gender-Based Violence (domestic abuse). Our Guest Melisha takes us through her brave journey of how she was able to turn her pain into power. In this chat, we cover Melisha's story and dabble into the nuanced female experiences that are often not spoken about - we all know about physical abuse, the scars are often there to see, but about 'emotional abuse'. We learn that abuse is a spectrum and this conversation could not be any more timely as it coincides with the global campaign - 'The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign', a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December. “Child abuse thrives in the shadows of privacy and secrecy. It lives by inattention.” So said Dr. David Bakan, professor of psychology in his book “Slaughter of the Innocents.” Melisha’s death at the hands of her stepfather brought such a bright spotlight to the dark nasty secret of child battering that immediate changes were made in the United States. Today we’ll review the good –changes in the policies and regulations followed by social services and welfare departments -- that led to greater protection of children who were in similar situations as little Missy was. Before speaking about the changes to social services we need to understand why Melisha was placed back with her parents. Melisha Gibson’s stepfather abused her severely at 11 months old and she lived for more than three years in a foster family with whom she had a deep bond. Foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins considered Melisha, or Missy as she was called, and inquired about adopting her. Ronnie and Wanda Maddux wanted their children returned, however and over the course of months, one-by-one the state returned all of the children, placing Missy there last. Why? Why did social services in the US hold reunification of the family as so important? And since it was so important, why didn’t social services provide more resources or require treatment that would have given a family placement more chance at success? Two months after the Maddux’s trial ended, Judge Witt said,"These people got the fairest trial they could get. I don't care where you try this case; you can try it in Hong Kong, you can try it in the Alps' Mountains, you can try it on the banks of the Nile; you're going to get the same verdict." In this episode we’ll discuss the verdict and the legal aftermath for Wanda and Ronald Maddux. When Wanda Maddux took the stand to testify in her own defense, she told the jury that the day before her daughter died her husband, Ronnie, "acted plumb wild. He's been mean before, but I've never seen him that bad." Will Wanda be able to convince the jury that Ronald Maddux was a batterer who targeted Melisha for abuse without her consent or approval? Targeted: True Crime Domestic Violence. We’ll investigate one case of family violence each season, using academic research to interpret the events so that we can become better advocates. Stepfather Ronnie Maddux testified that Wanda and his older stepdaughters were the ones to abuse Melisha. He revealed Wanda told him that Melisha "doesn't love you." Could this be why Melisha died? It's a short episode this week as Mo Blackwell was traveling during the week and recording in a hotel closet! Before the Maddux murder trial began Judge Witt asked one of the attorneys a question in open court, "Don't you realize that everyone, no matter how low and how despicable, has a right to be represented by an attorney?" This question was widely published in newspapers, and sets the tone for the trial that was about to begin. The Madduxes were low and despicable and while they had a right to a trial, it was really a formality to endure before the inevitable prison sentence occurred. website: www.targetedpodcast.com email: targetedpodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @targetedpodcast #2podsADay: http://www.our-americana.com/2podsaday/ The Punnery: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-punnery/id1243263910?mt=2
The public pressure was intense surrounding Ronald and Wanda Maddux’s guilt of murdering their 4-year-old daughter, Melisha Gibson. Petitions and protests called for the Madduxes to be put to death. Country music star Hank Snow even wrote TN Govenor Ray Blanton demanding the death penalty for anyone convicted of child abuse. I tend to think of the road to a trial being an ordered and logical progression from arrest to arraignment to trial. The road to a trial should be well-marked and driven upon with caution. But it seems to me as if the typical slow and steady drive on the road to a trial didn’t happen. It was more like this case was hijacked by a bunch of teens delivering bootleg moonshine, careening through the Appalachian mountains with the acceleration pedal firmly stomped to the floor. #2podsADay: http://www.our-americana.com/2podsaday/ website: www.targetedpodcast.com email: targetedpodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @targetedpodcast

How and why did he behave in this manner and why did the mother allow it? I believe that Ronald fits the profile of a Patriarchal Terrorist, also known as an Intimate Terrorist.
