Caomh McGillion joins me to talk more about captivating filmmaker Michael Mann. This time, we highlight some of our favorite moments from his small-screen narc shows to his big-scale movies.   Which key sequence in one of his '90s masterpieces has music play a pivotal role in beginning the sequence?   Which scenes have some neat editing and gaffing choices?    And which ones leave us wanting more of these rich characters and their gritty underworld backstory?   Feel the heat around the corner, get your body armor & roll out in the copters with us!      SONG USED: "Force Marker" by Brian Eno & "God Moving Over The Face of the Waters - End Credits (Film Version) " by Moby (from the HEAT original soundtrack)                   MAIN LINKS:  LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/JURSPodcast Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/JackedUpReviewShow/ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2452329545040913 Twitter: https://twitter.com/JackedUpReview  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacked_up_podcast/        SHOW LINKS: YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCIyMawFPgvOpOUhKcQo4eQQ   iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-jacked-up-review-show-59422651/   Podbean: https://jackedupreviewshow.podbean.com   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7Eg8w0DNympD6SQXSj1X3M   Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-jacked-up-review-show-podcast/id1494236218   RadioPublic: https://radiopublic.com/the-jacked-up-review-show-We4VjE   Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1494236218/the-jacked-up-review-show-podcast   Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy9hNDYyOTdjL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz   Anchor:  https://anchor.fm/s/a46297c/podcast/rss   PocketCasts: https://pca.st/0ncd5qp4   CastBox:  https://castbox.fm/channel/The-Jacked-Up-Review-Show-Podcast-id2591222   Discord:  https://discord.com/channels/796154005914779678/796154006358851586         #MovieReview #FilmTwitter #PodFamily #PodcastersOfInstagram #Movies #Film #Cinema #Music #Reviews #Retrospect #Podcasts #MutantFam #MutantFamily #actionmystery #bmovies #scifihorror #truecrime #historydramas #warmovies #podcastcollabs #hottakes #edgy #cultmovies #nsfw #HorrorFam #badass

Send us a textRemember Collateral from Michael Mann starring Jamie Foxx and arguably the biggest movie star worldwide, Tom Cruise? We didn't remember a lot from this movie either. What we did remember was that it was more realistic than your average action film of the time, and Jada Pinkett Smith seemed normal. But with these two mega stars, this director, and a supporting cast that is downright diabolical, we have high hopes.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Mann-o-Mann!

We're back with an episode featuring just Neil and myself discussing a cinematic topic we both are invested in: The crime/heist genre. The core of this chat is an examination of how the structures of the genre intersect with social, racial, and economic contexts in four specific films. Sparked by our shared admiration for Justin Kurzel's The Order, we trace the lineage of socially conscious crime narratives from classic noir to contemporary thrillers. We consider genre cinema's desire to convey a sense of prestige - think of the notion of elevated horror - and revisit some of the core theoretical foundations of genre as a self-contained system, as proposed by thinkers such as Steve Neale and Rick Altman. Then we tackle four films as case studies: The Order (2023) - Justin Kurzel Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) – Robert Wise Collateral (2004) – Michael Mann Widows (2018) – Steve McQueen We analyse how each of these films, in varying ways, deploy genre frameworks to narrate the struggle for power, identity, and survival, and we interrogate the evolving relationship between cinematic pleasure and political subtext. John Cena's back on top… and Kevin Nash has thoughts. In this week's episode, Big Kev breaks down the shockwaves of WrestleMania and why he thinks the ending was more “Hogan in '96” than the crowd may have realized. From kayfabe power dynamics to merch-moving politics, it's all under the microscope as Kevin sets the table for what should come next. But before we get into the squared circle, we take a cinematic detour. Michael Mann's Heat, Kevin Bacon playing a literal devil's bounty hunter, and how many rewatches does it take to admit Collateral might not hold up? Kev's got opinions, Sean's got DVD nostalgia, and somehow Al Pacino ends up with a jobber's gimmick. Welcome to Kliq This. The boys also break down what it really means to “look like a star” in today's wrestling climate—whether you're a 6'10” killer or a 5'1” flipper. Kev doesn't mince words when comparing Rey Mysterio's legacy to modern high-flyers, and yes, someone ends up being called a Shetland pony. Is the WWE pricing out the working-class fan? Is Heyman really the MacGuffin that holds the industry together? And why do modern entrances feel more like Coachella sets than fight-night spectacles? Kev walks through the economics, the nostalgia, and the fire (literally) of what makes a great entrance… and why Diesel's never gotten the love it deserved. And finally, WrestleMania predictions fly fast and furious—including a huge twist involving Cena, Cody, and Paul Heyman. Kev sees the chessboard clearly, even if it ends with someone becoming a “Heyman bottom.” If that line doesn't get your attention, nothing will. Watch now—before the markets open.

This week on the podcast, the gurls recap "We're Off to See The Wizard," aka Everyone's Drinking Dumb Bish Juice. This episode leaves them asking why The Elders don't have a Magical Negro while applauding The Seer's behind-the-scenes work for team Underworld. Penned by writing duo Alison Schapker and Monica Owusu-Breen (women who go on to write for Scandal and Alias, respectfully), this episode has the girls and the gurls in their emotional bag; for Nelle, it's 90% the episode and 10% the comment section. For Rae, Paige is the Halliwell sister at the bottom of the pyramid. In the R.E.P.O.R.T, the gurls talk Beyond the Gate's Turtleneck Ted. While watching the Devil May Cry anime, Nelle takes us on her manifestation journey. Rae goes down an 80s rabbit hole watching Kramer vs Kramer and Michael Mann's Manhunter. Rae's convinced the Halliwells guzzled dumb bish juice. Nelle's wondering why Rae expects better from them. Tune in for laughs, side-eyes, and just enough chaos to keep things magical.

Muhammad Ali is widely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of all-time and one of the most important figures of the 20th century. In addition to his long and celebrated career as a boxer and three-time heavyweight champion of the world, Ali changed the conversation about race, religion, and politics in America. Ali's refusal to be inducted into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War on religious grounds—a profound act of resistance that resulted not only in Ali's three-plus-year exile from professional boxing, but also a criminal conviction and five year-prison sentence that Ali almost had to serve until it was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court—represented a pivotal moment of the 1960s. Ali has been the subject of numerous books and documentary films, including the Oscar-winning When We Were Kings (1996) and The Trials of Muhammad Ali (2013). He is also the subject of the 2001 Hollywood biopic, Ali (co-written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Will Smith as Ali), which focuses on the ten-year period from Ali's capture of the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in 1964 to Ali's fight against George Foreman in Zaire in 1974 (the famed “Rumble in the Jungle”). Once a sharply polarizing figure, Ali became one of the most celebrated and eulogized individuals in America, whose rich, if not incomparable, legacy reverberates around the world today.  Timestamps:0:00    Introduction2:22      Formative experiences5:00     From Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali10:26    Opposition to the Vietnam draft13:16     Ali's loss of his prime years15:42     The broader significance of Ali's opposition to induction 18:08    Ali's legal challenges and the U.S. Supreme Court22:48:   The Fight of the Century24:06    From a symbol of resistance to reconciliation27:50     Becoming a global icon: The Rumble in the Jungle35:30    Ali and Howard Cosell 36:57    Ali and Malcolm X41:08    Some problems of the Ali biopic44:12     Ali's post-boxing career47:53    Sports and resistance: Ali's legacy      Further reading:Hauser, Thomas, Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times (1991)Kindred, Dave, Sound and Fury: Two Powerful Lives, One Fateful Friendship (2006)Lederman, Marty, “The story of Cassius Clay v. Topics include: slow cinema, fiction/doc hybridization, the movie's relationship to neorealism, critical forms and aesthetic forms, hyper-mediated Mise-en-scène and the Three Gorges Dam. Watch Still Life here. Seriously, watch it, it's great.   Corbin reccomends an album, avaibale on album streaming services or at your local record shop. Tyler reccomends Passing Fancy, an Ozu movie. Matt reccomends Eternity's Pillar, available here. Next week, the boys take it to the limit one more time and discuss Michael Mann's Generational Male Frienship/Global Capitalism Epic MIAMI VICE. Watch it on Apple TV if you can stand to spend four bucks, it's looks GREAT there and kind of bad in other streaming locations.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 134 - Nathan Crowley - Production Designer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with production designer Nathan Crowley (WICKED, DUNKIRK, INTERSTELLAR). After growing up in England, Nathan's dreams of selling secondhand sports cars in LA were cut short after a run in with set designer and fellow countryman Joe Hodges at a bar outside Paramount, and we learn how Nathan dove headfirst into the art department after assisting Joe on HOOK. Nathan later shares how he made the jump to heading the department himself, and we discuss his approach to production design throughout the episode. We uncover the reasoning behind the aesthetic choices of DUNKIRK, and Nathan shares how he accounted for the practicalities of filmmaking during a globetrotting location scout to help realize the vision of INTERSTELLAR. In the back half of the episode, we discuss Nathan's recent work on WICKED, and he shares what attracted him to the film and what scared him about designing one of the most well-known worlds in the American imagination, and he reveals how Donna Langley, the head of the studio, helped convince production to plant millions of tulips for the film. Plus, Nathan shares a key lesson he learned while working with director Michael Mann about following his instincts. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

“Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” released on January 10, 2025, is the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2018 heist thriller “Den of Thieves.” Directed by Christian Gudegast, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul T. Scheuring, the film reunites stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr., reprising their roles as the relentless Los Angeles Sheriff's Department detective Nicholas “Big Nick” O'Brien and the cunning thief Donnie Wilson. This installment shifts the action from the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the sun-drenched, glamorous locales of Europe, delivering a high-stakes diamond heist narrative inspired by the real-life 2003 Antwerp diamond robbery. Produced by Lionsgate, alongside Diamond Film Productions, G-BASE, and Tucker Tooley Entertainment, the film blends tactical crime drama with a newfound lightness, trading the original's brooding intensity for a more playful, buddy-cop dynamic. The story picks up with Big Nick, still reeling from personal turmoil, including a recent divorce, as he tracks Donnie across Europe. Donnie, now entangled with the notorious Panther mafia, is orchestrating a daring heist targeting the world's largest diamond exchange in Nice, France. The plot kicks off with a pulse-pounding opening in Antwerp, where Donnie and the Panther Crew, led by the enigmatic Jovanna (Evin Ahmad), steal a rare red diamond, setting the stage for a cat-and-mouse game. Nick, gone rogue from his department, pursues Donnie not just to apprehend him but with a surprising twist of intent—teaming up for the heist. Their unlikely alliance, cemented over drunken shawarma and banter about French cuisine, injects the film with a shaggy charm reminiscent of early “Fast & Furious” films, though it's layered with Gudegast's signature procedural detail.Spanning 144 minutes, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” luxuriates in its slow-burn buildup, dedicating much of its runtime to the meticulous planning of the diamond center break-in. From camera cycles to fake identities, the film revels in heist logistics, punctuated by tension from vengeful ex-crew members and a Sardinian mobster demanding the stolen diamond's return. The payoff arrives in the second hour with a gripping infiltration sequence and a standout car chase through the French Alps, evoking Michael Mann's “Heat” and John Frankenheimer's “Ronin.” Butler's Nick, hanging off Donnie's getaway car, firing at pursuers, anchors the visceral action, shot with a metallic realism by cinematographer Terry Stacey using Arri Alexa cameras. The cast expands with strong supporting turns from Evin Ahmad as a potential love interest for Nick, Salvatore Esposito as a mafia heavy, and Meadow Williams reprising her role from the first film. Filmed across Tenerife, the Canary Islands, and the UK from April to July 2023, the production transformed Santa Cruz streets into a French diamond district, enhancing the film's European flair. Kevin Matley's score replaces Cliff Martinez's from the original, adding a fresh sonic pulse to the Mediterranean setting.Critically, the film sits at a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, lauded for Butler's charisma and the thrilling set pieces, though some, like Rolling Stone's David Fear, critique its convoluted plot and overlong runtime. Grossing $57.3 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, it topped the U.S. box office with a $15 million opening weekend. Now streaming on Netflix as of March 20, 2025, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” refines its predecessor's macho ethos into a more elegant, if familiar, thriller—leaving the door ajar for a third installment, already greenlit, set in Africa.

On March 16, the New York Times published “We Were Badly Mislead About The Event That Changed Our Lives”. It reports that 77 Nobel Laureates and 31 scientific societies were involved in the cover up that included deliberately planning to mislead journalists. (Actually, the NYT can be accused of failing to do its job). Guy Hatchard analyses what really took place in New Zealand and elsewhere under the heading of "A strange mental illness is spreading via infected information networks". It's a most revealing discussion. Also we comment on “The climate scam is over”; a ground breaking study using AI to debunk the man-made climate crisis narrative. Who would've thought. (Michael Mann is getting destroyed every which way)! And the Mailroom with Mrs Producer is excellent. Former Republican U.S. congressman Bob Inglis offers a conservative perspective on climate solutions in discussion with Penn climatologist Michael Mann. --- Politically conservative and concerned about climate change? In this special episode of the Energy Policy Now podcast, Penn climatologist Michael Mann talks with Bob Inglis, former Republican Congressman from South Carolina and current executive director of RepublicEN.org, about bridging the partisan climate divide. In a wide-ranging conversation recorded live during Energy Week at Penn 2025 at the University of Pennsylvania, Mann and Inglis discuss a conservative view on climate change, how conservative messaging on climate has evolved over time, and how common solutions might be found in an era of partisan climate divide. Inglis also offers his view on carbon pricing and strategies to reign in carbon emissions in the U.S. The conversation is moderated by Sanya Carley, faculty director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. Bob Inglis is a former U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. He is the executive director of RepublicanEn.org at George Mason University. Michael Mann is director of the Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media at the University of Pennsylvania. Sanya Carley is the Mark Alan Hughes faculty director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. Important note on the conversation: Due to a technical problem, the first two minutes of Bob Inglis’ conversation are difficult to hear (from 5:40 to 7:40). We’ve transcribed those two minutes in the show notes, below, to make it easier to follow along. A full transcript of this and all Energy Policy Now podcasts is available on the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy website. Bob Inglis (5:40): Yeah, so for my first six years in Congress I said that climate change is nonsense. All I knew was that Al Gore was for it. And as much as I represented Greenville-Spartanburg South Carolina, that was the end of the inquiry. Okay, pretty ignorant. But that’s the way it was my first six years. Out of Congress six years, as you just heard, doing commercial real estate law again and then, had the opportunity to run for the same seat again before, our son had just turned 18, so he was voting for the first time, and he came to me and he said, dad, I’ll vote for you. But you’re going to clean up your act on the environment. His four sisters agreed, his mother agreed. New constituency, you know. So you got to respond to those people who can change the locks on the doors to your house, you know. So, very important to respond to these people. And so that was step one of a three step metamorphosis. Step two was going to Antarctica with the [House of Representatives] Science Committee and seeing the evidence in the iceberg drillings. Step three was another Science Committee trip and, um, really a spiritual awakening which seems improbable, right, on a godless Science Committee trip, because we all know that all scientists are godless. Right? Well, apparently not. Because this Aussie climate scientist was showing me the glories of the Great Barrier Reef. I could see he was worshipping God in what he was showing me. You know, St. Francis of Assisi supposedly said “preach the gospel at all times. If necessary use words.” So Scott Heron, this Aussie climate scientist who’s now become a very dear friend was doing that. I could see it in his eyes, it was written all over his face. It was in his excitement about what he was showing me. He was clearly worshipping God. So I knew we shared a world view. Forty words were spoken. Happy week of St. Patrick's Day! We have a full show coming up with lots of news coming out of Ireland - most of it not good. And we bring you the latest on our friend, the writer and broadcaster Mark Steyn who has SLAPPed back against the climate fraudster Michael Mann. And more climate hypocrisy as we reveal how alleged tree huggers are destroying the rainforest to have a conference to tell US how we shouldn't destroy the rainforest. And speaking of hypocrites we reveal how Stephen Colbert is the biggest late night Tesla/Elon Musk hypocrite of them all. Also, the anti semitism never stops in the Emerald Isle. It certainly is not Ireland of the welcomes with Israelis being spat on in bars and being pro-Israel student is now a punishable offence in Irish universities, like in the case of a Dublin University student who was ousted as chair of his debate society. And the plans to deport Hamas-loving Mahmoud Khalil may be stalling. We look at whether it is a free speech issue that means he is protected. Our conclusions may surprise you.Don't forget to subscribe and leave a comment.
