Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Abby Taylor, founder of Playa Bowls, tropical super fruit bowls, prepared on demand nation wide. Surfing being a major part of Abby's upbringing, various açaí bowls were present at most surf towns she would visit. Taking this into account, Abby and her co-founder, Robert, decided to recreate their favorite recipes with their own twist at home at the Jersey Shore. They made a deal with the owner of the pizza shop they lived above on 8th Avenue in Belmar, NJ. They bought a blender, a patio table, a fridge & a freezer and set up a makeshift pop up stand on the sidewalk in front of the pizza shop. They spent a lot of time & effort telling their story and educating customers on the benefits of acai. As word spread of this creative & intuitive pop up stand, more & more people stood in line on the side of Ocean Avenue to see what Playa Bowls was all about. After finding much success with this location, they expanded to now over 120 locations nationwide.  Make sure to check out Playa Bowls for yourself at: https://www.playabowls.com/   Follow Starting Small: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/startingsmallpod/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Startingsmallpod/?modal=admin_todo_tour LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/cameronnagle   Support for Starting Small comes from Humanscale, the leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance ergonomic products that help create a healthier work life. It took Laura 633:41:39 to finish.   From       Endurance News: A federal safety board issued a surprise recommendation for mandatory bike helmet laws in all 50 states — unanimously approving a last-minute resolution that had not been recommended by the board’s own staff. The National Transportation Safety Board voted 3-0 to recommend helmet laws even as staff members reminded panelists that such laws may reduce overall cycling, and lead to the “unintended consequence” of more road fatalities because fewer cyclists will mean less pressure on local officials to build the kind of protected infrastructure that is proven to improve cyclist safety.   From     Last week, events company AEG announced that the Amgen Tour of California, the last remaining UCI World Tour race that’s brought some of the world’s most talented riders to the U.S. for the past 14 years, would be put “on hiatus.” In a statement announcing the cancellation, AEG did not detail any specific reasons for it, but suggested that the ATOC would not be coming back until they figure out the biggest barrier to bike racing here in the United States: money. “This has been a very difficult decision to make, but the business fundamentals of the Amgen Tour of California have changed since we launched the race 14 years ago,” Kristin Klein, president of the Amgen Tour of California and executive vice president of AEG Sports said in a statement. “This new reality has forced us to re-evaluate our options, and we are actively assessing every aspect of our event to determine if there is a business model that will allow us to successfully relaunch the race in 2021.”   From     At 17, Mary Cain was already a record-breaking phenom: the fastest girl in a generation, and the youngest American track and field athlete to make a World Championships team. We are your hosts coach Rich Soares and 303 Chief Bill Plock. Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance. Thanks to last week's guest Nige Tassell on the book Three Weeks Eight Seconds.  It's a great book to read while watching the Tour de France. The story of the 1989 Tour as told in the book is told with such insight and detail that it really helps the reader get the game within the game, so-to-speak. Grab a copy of the book if you love cycling and the Tour, or if you just want to read a great story told by a great writer with a passion for a topic. Prepare to be inspired! Prepare to be moved in today's show. If you've been following the show, you certainly got a chance to hear a little from the Newton Running athlete panel over Ironman Boulder weekend.  Brent and Kyle Pease, the first push-assist brother duo to complete the grueling IRONMAN World Championship and founders of The Kyle Pease Foundation, join us to tell their story through the book, Beyond the Finish, an inspiring memoir about brotherhood and relentless determination. As you will hear shortly, Kyle is the brains and Brent the brawn in the brotherly bonded duo that has inspired people around the globe and helped all of us develop a better perspective on what cerebral palsy is, its variations, and that the people afflicted are people with personalities, ambitions, have dreams, want to be inspired and to inspire others, and yes, are sometimes athletes….even Ironmen. Thanks to last week's discussion guest Nige Tassel who tells the story of the most famous bike race I the world and this epic battle in the book Three Weeks Eight Seconds. Don't Fry Bacon Naked: Last week we introduced this segment with a discussion about really worthwhile test to get done, which is glycogen muscle ultrasound.  I've had it done and had athletes get it done.  It has helped reveal low glycogen levels, which can show symptoms if are severe enough.  It can also be high enough to not show many symptoms, but low enough that it could be revealed to you in a long race of two hours or more. The point being that if your glycogen stores are low, you could bonk much earlier than you might expect. This week's lesson is about open water swimming and safety. This past weekend I was at one of our local spots for open water swimming.  We had a little scare with a swimmer last weekend.  A family was OWS for the first time and one person had a bit of a panic attach and another was overdue at the shore and there was a concern for his safety and an informal search that ensued.  Fortunately the overdue family member turned up and all was well.  OWS is an experience that can cause anxiety, particularly for less experienced swimmers.  There are a number of factors that cause feelings of panic. Some are genuine fear of drowning, but its typically caused by a number of factors that are physiological as well.  Episodes 27 and 85 with coach Will Murray "What's New in the 303": https://303triathlon.com/kirstens-race-tips-for-boulder-peak/ https://303triathlon.com/boulders-clare-gallagher-wins-western-states-trained-in-the-arctic/ Triple Bypass       Endurance News: Skip this week   Upcoming Interviews: Next week we will have coach Will Murray on phobias and post traumatic stress. Welcome to Episode #183 of the Mile High Endurance podcast. You are listening to your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance goals. We are your hosts coach Rich Soares and 303 Chief Bill Plock. Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion. This week we have a really interesting discussion for you.  Think about the people that have left a legacy in triathlon.  Who is the first person who comes to mind?  This week we are sharing a panel discussion with 5 athletes who are creating legacies as they continue to race.  We have Kyle and Brent Pease (the Pease brothers), Chris McDonald, Craig Alexander (Crowie), and Andrea Ramos.  The event was hosted by Newton Running and owner Jerry Lee.  It was facilitated by Andrew Maxwell and the central discussion was about what legacy they want to leave in the sport.  It's personal for each and we hope you will feel a connection to one or more of these stories. Thanks to last week's guest TO and the breakdown of Ironman Boulder.  We are looking forward to seeing him in Kona. She's completed the most notorious races - the Badwater 135 mile footrace through Death Valley in the heart of summer, the Kona Ironman World Championship, and the Furnace Creek 508 mile cycling race, to name a few. We sat down in Venice Beach, CA to discuss her training methods, career and life story; what I learned is that she's also one of the most impressive and dynamic people in the world of sport. A survivor of sexual trauma and bullying, Meredith has never let anything keep her from achieving at the highest level. She played collegiate tennis at Vanderbilt University, where her team was ranked among the top ten in the country. She later graduated with honors before eventually moving on to professional endurance sports, where she earned sponsorships from the top brands in the industry, including TIMEX, Newton Running, Generation UCAN and others.Throughout her own career, Dolhare raised two young men, both of whom are now in college. She also became active in various charities, even founding her own non-profit aimed at solving the homeless crisis called RunningWorks - a mentorship based organization that seeks to improve the mental and physical well-being of the homeless population in the Carolinas. The 4-decade battle for the world’s most iconic endurance race Per The New York Times, the Ironman Triathlon puts on more than 260 races in 44 countries and is valued at nearly a billion dollars, making it one of the world’s most premiere sports brands.   Now, over 40 years later, the people at the forefront of its creation haven’t seen a dime, and the legal triathlon continues. It all started in Hawaii... Long before the Spartan or Tough Mudder, naval officer John Collins and his wife, Judy, thought to combine 3 of the toughest endurance races: On Feb. 18, 1978, the first “Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon” was born. There were 15 participants. John wrote a 3-page rule book with 10 major rules that boiled down to: “Swim 2.4 miles! Run 26 ¼ miles! Bike 112 miles! Brag the rest of your life!” But, it was rule number 8 -- which set the entry fee at $5 and stipulated that the event would be sponsored by participants -- that would later cause the biggest headache.  Gettin’ Silky with it By ’79, Collins needed someone to run the 3rd edition of the event, so he handed over a box of paperwork to husband and wife fitness club owners Hank Grundman and Valerie Silk -- no lawyers, no signatures. By ’82 the race had ballooned in popularity, and John Dunbar (the runner-up in the original 2 races) started selling copies of the original trophy. He, like the other 14 OG racers, presumed a stake of the competition still belonged to him... So, when Silk registered the Ironman trademark in ’83 and told Dunbar to cease sale of the throwback trophy he was pedaling, he didn’t go quietly. The real triathlon... Silk sold the brand for $3m in ’89 and, in 2015, after years of expansion, the brand was acquired by its current owner, a Chinese conglomerate called Dalian Wanda Group, for $650m. 4 decades later, Dunbar continues to argue that the famed triathlon belongs to him and the original 15, even though the courts, and many of Dunbar’s allies, have insisted it’s too late.  Silk said no original competitors showed interest in Ironman until it made money. She changed the rules and re-created the race -- “I changed everything,” Silk said. “And I never heard a peep from anybody.”   Triathlon Trivia: https://www.triathlete.com/2018/03/news/triathletes-earned-prize-money-2017_311286 https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Triathlon/Elite/Prize-Money-Leaders Upcoming Interviews: USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris to give an update on "Time To Tri" Caryn Marconi, Shelbi Meyer and Tammi Hanson on the Compete Clean program and USADA Anti-doping resources and rules Sam Appleton on his pro career and 2019 schedule Our show is also supported by 303 Endurance Network, which includes 303Triathlon and 303 Cycling, which covers the endurance culture, news and events on triathlon and cycling. We talked about commitment. We talked about honesty and "tough love".       We characterized the things that detract from a positive relationship were lack of communication, lack of commitment. What we are really talking about here is TRUST. Out of sheer coincidence, I was at a leadership training event this week presented by David Horsager on the topic of trust. His company is the Trust Edge. He has written a book, The Trust Edge. And, David is also a triathlete and his wife is a marathoner. https://www.amazon.com/Trust-Edge-Leaders-Relationships-Stronger/dp/1476711372/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1548421130&sr=8-1&keywords=David+Horsager Elements (or Pillars) of Trust Clear communication - demonstrate genuine listening, empathy, honesty, focused, open minded, mean what you say, no manipulation; be clear about where you are, where you want to be, why, and how you are going to get to the goal Being compassionate - listen, appreciate, being present, and serving selflessly Character - humility, honesty, don't guess, actions that match your words, doing the right thing over the easy thing. er the easy thing. Solos Smart Glasses - Our goal is to bring information about products like this to our audience and give them insights that they might not otherwise be able to find on their own. I've read some online comments and want to comment on a few of them. "I’m not sure that these Smart Glasses will help the wearer stay present, if they’re taking calls, checking email, social media etc." I've used them for a few weeks now. While you can receive or make a call, you can do that if you have your phone in your pocket anyway. You have the same choice to answer or not. If you do decide to answer it, you can do it without taking your hands off the handlebars or without looking at your phone, making it safer in my opinion. You can not check email or social media, so that comment is simply misinformed speculation. "Durability and long term reliability are my concerns like if dropped on accident, or cold rainy weather scenarios." I have to say that's a concern of mine as well. I am constantly dropping my glasses and I worry that I would do that with these. "Need a view from what's behind you and I would by them in a second!" Scott addressed this in the interview and it sounds like this is something that is on their roadmap, assuming it meets the "not distracting" test. Note: This episode has a few swear words so please be aware of your surroundings when listening out loud! I recently took a free self defense class at Way of the Crane in Boulder. It was hosted by Newton Running and the sensei, Melanie Murphy, was fantastic. She was strong and bold and in just one hour, she made us feel stronger and bolder. I knew immediately when she started talking that I needed to get her on the podcast. We recorded a couple weeks ago and I decided her message was the perfect way to start the new year. Today we talk about: Traumatic events that push us to find our power Melanie's philosophy on self-defense Dis-ease: turning someone else's disease into a weapon you can use to defend yourself Asshole repellant Tricks that predators use: intimidation, manipulation & more What we can do to help our kids develop their power and avoid being preyed upon Flipping the power switch I know this episode will resonate in some way with each of us. For more empowerment, Melanie offers free classes on the calendar every month and a 4-hour intensive class that will drive home what you learn so that it starts to become second nature. If you’re in Colorado, this is a great opportunity for you to gain strength and confidence. Check the calendar here for more info. In the very short term, she has a free intro class on Wed Jan 9 6-7PM and she’s taking enrollment for her 4 hour workshop on Jan 27 from 12-4. To further enhance your strength and empowerment this year, Skirt Sports is offering you 20% off your orders through March. Just use the code RUN20. If you aren’t familiar with Skirt Sports, I founded the company in 2004 because I wanted clothing that didn’t ride up or chafe, that fit my body, and that was cute! So I figured out how to start a clothing company and I did it. Over the years, we have grown and evolved. Today we offer a full line of women’s athletic apparel that fits our bodies and makes us feel good. So be sure to use the code RUN20 as we’re launching all sorts of incredible stuff this season. To close out, it’s Melanie's final nugget that you need to hold close as you enter this new year. “Speak from your heart. Believe your soul. And trust your body.” As always, thank you so much for giving me a very long 5k of your time. If you have any recommendations for guests, feedback, questions or more, let me know. I’m here for you. All right then, you know what time it is. It’s time to get out there and run this world. Have a great workout and I’ll see you next week!

Available On: iTunes  | Google Play  | Stitcher  | Spotify For Thad Beaty, musician-turned-triathlete, “Music That Moves” is the literal summation of his incredible journey thus far. A guitarist who has spent 9 years with country juggernaut Sugarland, he has shared stages with Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Rhianna, and Beyoncé as well as contributing as a writer on albums selling upwards of 10 million copies. After his mother’s diagnosis with colon cancer and his own realization that the rock and roll lifestyle had resulted in his own poor health, he set out on a new journey to reclaim his health, the health of his family, and now, a quickly growing community of triathletes all over the world. Music That Moves was born out of Thad’s journey back to health in all areas of his life. Through the medium of a plant-based diet combined with a goal to compete in an IRONMAN, Thad found himself over 70 pounds lighter and surrounded by fellow athletes and musicians who wanted his help with their own journeys. Never one to do anything halfway, he dove in head first and pursued multiple coaching certifications (USA Triathlon Level 2, USAC Level 2, Training Peaks Level 2, USMS Level 2, Newton Running, Dynamic Movement Assessment,TRX, Spartan SGX, Triathlon Research, and Scheduled to sit for his Nutritionist certification and NSCA CSCS) to better coach the athletes he is leading. After discovering his passion to affect people’s lives for positive change, Thad was asked to be a celebrity mentor on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Weight-loss Edition, helping to coach and train a participant to complete the New Zealand Half-Ironman. "People think I'm being critical but I (often) talk about what I call the 'echo chamber' of the sneakerhead world in that a shoe/brand/event is bounced back and forth inside this 'echo chamber' and it makes it seem like it's a really loud voice, but when you look around the big world outside, most people don't even know that it's going on. So very many of the hot sneakerhead shoes are just not commercial in units sold." This week, Sneakerologist Matt Powell joins the show. Matt is a prominent voice in the sneaker industry and is a vice president and sports industry analyst for NPD Group where he covers the business of sports retail, wearables and especially sneakers. Matt has been covering the sneaker industry for more than 20 years and also is a contributor to the Forbes Sneakernomics blog. On this episode, we take a deep dive into the business and culture of sneakers — how did the industry get so large over the past 30 years? Matt shares some numbers in market shares, compares trends vs. sales, discusses brand loyalty, as well as gives us some insight into some of the startup brands such as BrandBlack. We also discuss the alleged impact of celebrity collaborations with brands (including the Kanye/Adidas Yeezy), sneaker customization, the reselling industry, as well as the sensitive topic of violence in the retail side of the sneaker business. Matt also covers wearable technology at NPD Group so we end with a discussion on the future of wearables in sports, including 3d printing. Audio Question from Ange: Could you weight in on "Carb Backloading"? Involves: Training in the morning when you get up, maybe have a cup of coffee (with cream) but have no macro-nutrients before working out. She always thought you should take in carbs and/or protein before working out. ~ In my response, I mention my original response to a carb backloading question. Audio Question from Matt: Planning on running some marathons and an Ironman in the next 12-16 months. Has a very irregular work/sleep schedule. Trains in the morning whether he work days or nights. He's looking for nutritional advice to fit a schedule like his. Also would like to know what to eat after his workout when he goes to bed directly after. What supplements should he take to make the most of his sleep - currently takes melatonin and casine-isolate shake. ~ I mention my sleep recommendations. Audio Question from "Belly": 2 years ago he was 30kg heavier than he is today (he is 33). Back then, he started walking several times a week and then started running. Loves running. Even though he has lost weight he still has a layer of fat around his belly. Could you elaborate on how to get rid of the belly fat (he knows about runner's belly related to cortisol levels). Audio Question from "Bones": His wife just had a bone density scan and was diagnose with osteopenia. They are wondering what supplements she should take. ~ In my response, I mention Capraflex. Also liquid trace minerals, Vitamin D, Magnesium, and Vitamin K2. Audio Question from Craig: Based on your recommendation he has been wearing blue blockers in the evening. Wants to know if there would be any advantage to wearing sunglasses in the morning before sunrise. Audio Question from Scott: 2 weeks ago he had blood work that showed his testosterone was low (8.2 nmol/litre 22.5 pmol/litre Testosterone Free Reading). Started taking medications. Has been running twice a week and as well as lifting weights. Had blood work done again and his testosterone levels went down. What would you recommend to raise his testosterone level? ~ In my response, I suggest that he read these testosterone recommendations. Audio Question from Pat: Not an endurance athlete, lift weights and does jujitsu. He recently read the book "Chi Running" and has started running once a week, just a couple mines (or 3 at most). He's never heard us mention the book and wanted to know what we thought. ~ In my response to Pat, I mention this interview with Danny Abshire from Newton Running shoes. I also mention this Chi Running audio cue I made. Christine asks: I am thoroughly enjoying your new book! I have discovered I am a mesomorph female and had a question about the workouts. Quite a few exercises require cable workout equipment, which I do not have in my home. Can I substitute alternative exercises that work the same muscle group and maintain the high rep, low weight protocol? ~ In my response to Christine, I mention the Body by Jake Tower. Elizabeth says: Last summer, as I was in training for my first half marathon, I decided to stop taking my birth control because I didn't want the extra hormones and all that goes with taking birth control. I expected to not have a regular menstrual cycle at first but from August to February I had only one period. I have gone to the doctor and she said it was because I am too lean and am training too hard for the marathon. She gave me progesterone pills to take to see if she could restart my menstrual cycle and it did but now it has been 2 months since then and I have not had another period. My body fat percentage is around 21%. I'm wondering what I can do so that I can have regular menstrual cycle and still train for endurance running events. Connie says:I had some cardiovascular test done but have no clue what the results mean and thought maybe you would know. I have done 4 Ironman races. I am very slow and had a gastric bypass 6 years ago. The Doctors are saying I tested extremely high so that's why I'm confused. I had a Bruce Protocol Stress Test and I lasted 17 minutes 7 seconds ending at 5.5 mph at 20% grade, my VO2max calculates at 71.07 using the formula of 4.38xT-3.9 (T=time I lasted on treadmill during stress test) My functional aerobic capacity attained was 160% and my SBPxHR is 27360. HR went from 61 to 171. Does any of this make sense because I am totally lost. If my stats are good does that mean I should maybe start to push myself to not be so slow. Newton Running products were conceived and designed by Danny Abshire through his experience as a runner and designer of lightweight custom orthotics. Working with elite athletes, Danny dreamed of creating a shoe that would help runners of all levels get back to natural running techniques. Danny has been a running coach and the Director of Biomechanics and Injury Prevention for Multisports.com since 1993. He is also a consultant with the Lydiard Foundation and received his Pedorthic training from Northwestern University. Danny not only is an avid runner but also enjoys art, camping and spending time with his wife Jennifer, who manages the Newton Running Lab, and his two sons. Where did the idea for Newtons begin? Are there different types or styles of a running shoe like a Newton? What type of distances and speeds would that type of shoe be designed for? Are there injury risks or precautions that people should be aware of if they are switching from a non-Newton shoe? Should people put orthotics in a shoe like Newton? Do you support the use of barefoot running? ------------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -The first BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle podcast was released this week! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Cynthia asks: After I finish a bike ride, when I sit to take off my shoes, the tops of my quads (on the outside) begin to cramp up. Even if I stretch my quads a little first, this still happens. What could be causing this, and what can I do to alleviate it? Ashley asks: I 29 years old and have been running for 10 years. I have run 1 half marathon, and had hopes of running a full marathon, but this past spring I was diagnosed with ITB and Runner's knee. This derailed my running plan to say the least.  I worked diligently with a PT and strengthened my quads, and glutes. I also started incorporating a lot of stretching and using the foam roller. My ITB and knee are great now, my latest issue is Plantar Fasciitis. I have never had foot pain before and I am frustrated that my body keeps putting up road blocks preventing me from running. I am a vegetarian and eat very little dairy, I am diligigent about taking my daily multi-vitamin, D, Flax Seed oil, C, as well as Magnesium, Calcium and Zinc. Since the PF has come up I have been rolling my foot and icing it as well as stretching my foot. Can you suggest anything else I could do? Thanks for your help. In my response to Ashley, I recommend the free Muscle Imbalances Revealed report and also the podcast #97 interview with Tom Vachet. Mat asks: Do you think longer consistent sleep is more important than total hours(should I get up an hour later and forego my work nap)? You can take the deep sleep sheep test by clicking here. Mat asks: I spend at least 4.5hours everyday in the car,is there anything I can do in that time, other than listen to your podcast, that will help me achieve my fitness goals? I've heard you suggest jumping jacks every hour but that would just prolong my journey time....you did mention 'powerbreath' recently,is there anything else of a similar nature that could be used whilst driving? Kim asks: My friend and I have been discussing the right time to take Vitamin B-12. We are both vegan and take a Vitamin B-12 supplement as well as Chlorella, which has a high amount of Vitamin B-12. My first question is: Should we be taking this much Vitamin B-12? Secondly, she recently underwent some blood work which showed her B-12 to be low. We have read that Vitamin C blocks Vitamin B-12 when taken at the same time, so we avoid taking both together. However, we were wondering that since most of the food we consume consists of Vitamin C, is it possible that it is blocking the Vitamin B-12 we supplement in our diet? And, if so, how do we get around that? Listener Robert asks: I have been told newly caffeine has a huge impact on adrenal gland since those are all the time “provoked” so that some time they no longer are able to fulfill their mission, plus ongoing high adrenal level in the body, in general, has unwished impacts on the body either way. What's your take on that matter, and how far may I go [mg of caffeine on daily basis]. Is there any proven evidence backing this up or merely another uprising hysteria? Lee asks: If you get the chance, would you mind having a look at this supplement, Vital Greens? http://www.vitalgreens.com/ I am unable to get some of the supplements you mention here in Australia and wondered what you get from the ingredients list on the site. In my response to Lee, I mention Enerprime (pictured right). Go here: http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#enerprime Listener Jeff asks: I'm taking up aqua jogging to overcome a tenacious bout of plantar fasciitis. I'm a runner and begin marathon training in late November. I want to knock out this demon for good and stay off the roads until I do. I'm sustituting two indoor cycling classes per week, 2-3 swims per week and now aqua jogging. The Speedo belt and aqua shoes are enroute from Swim Outlet.com. I'll be in the pool with a free range of motion (that is, not touching the pool bottom). Can you recommend some aqua jogging workouts? Do you have a question for Ben? Also  any thought on Newton Running shoes? i run in a new pair of Asics  pronation support shoe..i roll inward ..ive had trouble with hip and  knee when .physical thearpy said hip is rotated and gluteus medius is  weak. He also suggested midfoot to forefoot running is better on the  body and he wears Newtons.  i looked up proper running form and seems  more people run midfoot to forefoot as well. Any thoughts or advice on this. Thanks. Anonymous asks: Hi there Ben have a question about the pros and cons to white rice?  I  eat quinoa rice on occasion and had a couple bobybuilding friends tell  me to eat white rice and chicken pre-workout to help increase energy  levels. im a triathlete and very clean eater and am anti-white rice. i  am struggling with getting enough good carbohydrates in. i rarely eat pastas or  rice or potatoes. usually two days out to a race is the only time i eat  them. struggling with energy levels and recovering and my friends  suggested it was due to no substatial carbs. i eat quinoa oats in the  a.m on a swim and bike day and weight days/ run days i go with egg  whites in the a.m. Any helpful advice?  THanks Listener Sal asks: Hey Ben, I have a question regarding weight vests and ankle weights.  I am   a student, and I spend much of my time in the library or in class sitting   down.  However, I do walk quite a bit to and from class, going up lots of   stairs throughout the day as well.  I was wondering how beneficial it would   be to throw on some ankle weights or even a weight vest underneath my   clothes.  Since it is winter, and i am usually wearing pants or a   sweatshirt anyways, I doubt anyone would notice.  Would this extra weight   cause any substantial calorie burn throughout the day?  Would it build leg   and general body strength? Also, what are the downsides to having this   stress on the body for such a long period of time.  I am not expecting much  from this idea, but thought that positive effects might be worth it since   it would take up no additional time in my day.  I would appreciate any   suggestions or comments on this topic.  Thanks, Sal Listener Lance asks: How can alpine skiing fit into "off season" base building? I am an avid skier who lives 4 hrs away from the hill, but still manage 30+ days a year from school vacations and weekends. In the past, I just skied until the snow ran out, then went mountain biking until it snowed again. This year I want to participate in a long triathlon season, so endurance training is the priority. Unfortunately, skiing is an anaerobic sport, and in the past it kept me unfit on the bike. I am unsure about how to balance the sports. There are two points of conflict: Weekends: Usually the only available time either to ski or do long rides or runs. Spring: There is often quite an overlap between spring skiing and training that needs to be done for spring races. How can I fit together my disparate interests so I can enjoy the ski season, but still have reasonable fitness for spring Xterra races? Listener Diane asks: Ben,  I don't know if you have ever come across anything like this  but I am getting desperate.  My docs are stumped.  For the last few years during stressful exercise(mostly races) of any length I start urinating every 10-15 min copious amts. I am very competitive and successful (won my age group in Kona this year), and this is negatively impacting my times as you can imagine.  If it starts during a triathlon usually doesn't start until the bike portion.  If a marathon usually after first hour.  It is rare for it to happen during training unless out very hard for long time.  I don't feel bad just very wet.  My primary doctor thought maybe diabetes insipidus and gave me DDAVP to take before race.  This worked maybe twice. He sent me to urology who didn't feel they could help.  I take electrolytes and have tried different ones and it doesn't change anything.  During a recent Ironman event in Nov at mile 20 on the bike I started every 15 min and then on the run hit the portapotty every mile. This is an example of how it usually goes. If you have any suggestions I would be very appreciative.  I have not found anyone else with this problem. Listener Chuck asks:  I have a trip to Las Vegas planned for April 16-19th.  I plan to have a good time, not kill myself, but probably drink a fair bit each night.  Of course, I'll try to get in as many good workouts as I can, but how will this affect me for the half Ironman on May 8th? And what can I do maintain as best as possible on the trip? Listener Carmen asks: What do you know about exercise and Hashimotos thyroid disease and how it affects adreanal health? Limitations? Listener Brad asks:  I just got turned on to your podcasts on my new phone through Google Listen. Your advise and podcasts are awesome and now I look forward to the advice you give each week on your podcast regarding triathlons. Last year I got in a few Ironman 70.3 at 42 years of age under my belt in just my second year of doing triathlons with a best of 5:14 in Kansas with a fractured foot. Had way to much energy when I finished both of them. I wish I would have known about you before committing my current coach here locally. He is one of the best here in Dallas area with 20+ yrs experience so I know I am in good hands. Maybe in the future it work out. I heard your latest podcast about the UA mouthpiece and I should be getting mine within a week. My dentist was able to pass it off as a sleep aid for grinding my teeth at night so after insurance I only paid $62 of the $495 price tag. I will let you know how it works for me as I increase my workouts. Still doing off season work and light workouts. Again, please keep informed on your findings with the mouthpiece. Listener Dave asks: I have been following your podcasts on the benefits of goat milk.  I have an acquaintance that has a friend that raises goats.  The milk is raw, unpasteurized straight from the goat.  He has offered to let me have some.  Would you have any concerns about this milk and implementing it into a diet? Listener Todd asks: Ben, I've been reading alot about Vit. D3 sources, and that the tablet form (small white disc, that comprises 90% of the Vit. D3 out there) is not very well absorbed by the body. Because D3 is oil soluble, we should be taking it in oil form (i.e. a gelcap).  It was even suggested that this form is better that the sublingual spray.  Any thoughts on this? ---------------------------------------- For  the next 2 weeks, the podcasts from Ben Greenfield Fitness will primarily focus on "Listener Q&A's", due to Ben's undertaking of a huge triathlon-focused side project that is going to bring you an instant and affordable way to get customized triathlon training advice!
