Toward the end of March Dominique and I met for an afternoon's conversation which I've divided up into three episodes. Last week we talked about puzzle solving. This week rope handling is in the spotlight. Dominique is going through my on-line rope handling course. She's just reached a section which describes what it means to turn a lead rope on and off. This is involves what can seem like a very fussy rope handling skill but the horses have shown us this use of the lead makes a difference to them. That's especially true when you're working with nervous horses. This detail emerged through the in-person clinics. We were looking for differences that made a difference and helped horses to settle. That's when I spotted this little turn of the hand that I was doing when I shifted from an active use of the lead to a more passive use during an at ease version of grown-ups. The lead signaled to the horse that he didn't need to pay close attention or try to offer behavior. The lead was switched off which meant he could switch off as well. Once we spotted this simple turn of the hand that turned leads on and off, we could test it with A/B reversals. What happens when we use this signal? How does the horse respond when it is not used? The horses all told us they preferred the clarity that activating and deactivating the lead provided. Okay the horses liked it. The handlers didn't. That's because this simple turn of the hand was anything but. It's only simple once you have the pattern in your hands. Otherwise, it can become a head spinning puzzle that could easily put someone completely off rope handling - especially since turning a lead on is a first step in whatever you are about to ask. I'm not going to try to teach you via this podcast how to turn a lead on and off. What we are going to talk about is reversibility because that's the teaching strategy that you'll use to learn this finger twisting puzzle.

He talks about how this law seems intuitively true, but has been difficult to prove. Wolfram outlines his decades-long quest to fully understand the second law, including failed early attempts to simulate particles mixing as a 12-year-old. K., Deco, G. Abstract: Brain signal irreversibility has been shown to be a promising approach to study neural dynamics. Nevertheless, the relation with cortical hierarchy and the influence of different electrophysiological features is not completely understood. In this study, we recorded local field potentials (LFPs) during spontaneous behavior, including awake and sleep periods, using custom micro-electrocorticographic (ECoG) arrays implanted in ferrets. In contrast to humans, ferrets remain less time in each state across the sleep-wake cycle. We deployed a diverse set of metrics in order to measure the levels of complexity of the different behavioral states. In particular, brain irreversibility, which allows us to quantify the level of non-equilibrium captured by the arrow of time of the signal, revealed the hierarchical organization of the ferret's cortex. We found different signatures of irreversibility and functional hierarchy of large-scale dynamics in three different brain states (active awake, quiet awake, and deep sleep), showing a lower level of irreversibility in the deep sleep stage, compared to the other. Irreversibility also allowed us to disentangle the influence of different brain regions and frequency bands in this process, showing a predominance of the parietal area and the theta band. Furthermore, when inspecting the embedded dynamic through a Hidden Markov Model, the deep sleep stage was revealed to have a lower switching rate and lower entropy production. These results suggest functional hierarchies in organization that can be revealed through thermodynamic features and information theory metrics. Copy rights belong to original authors. Dick's speech "The Android and the Human", given at the Vancouver SF Convention at the University of British Columbia, in March 1972. It focuses specifically on Dick's view that the distinction between the mechanical or electrical and the animate is beginning to break down in late modernity. She has been acknowledged for her work on Dr. Rea's book, “Reversibility of Chronic Degenerative Disease and Hypersensitivity”, Vol. 1. and his recent book, “EMF Effects from Power Sources and Electrosmog”. She has extensive experience with electromagnetic sensitivity and has given multiple lectures and interviews on the subject, most recently at the virtual international EMF conference in January 2021. She is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the International Society for Environmentally Acquired Illness, and on the board of the National Association of Environmental Medicine. She graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1993 and from Pepperdine University in 1989. She has built her own eco-friendly, low-electromagnetic-field home, consulting with well-known experts in healthy house building, including David Rousseau and Tang Lee of Canada, and Mary Oetzel in Texas. She has also lectured on other areas of Environmental Medicine including the subjects of indoor/outdoor air quality, avoiding pollutants in air, food and water, implant syndrome, and on the preparation of antigens for provocation/neutralization immunotherapy. Since 2017 Dr. McCarter has worked with LDA (low dose antigen) and LDI (low dose immunotherapy) for treatment of allergies, Lyme disease, Streptococcal infections and chronic viral infections. Robert and Brian then discuss the unhelpful instinct of some car collectors to 'clean the machine' and the benefits of simply removing the layers of dust and dirt in old finds (11:37) before Robert asks Brian to detail how he approaches conservation vs. restoration on a case by case basis with his clients (16:14).  After a short break, Robert asks Brian to talk about one unique car he had worked on recently, The Jenkins' Bus--an important fixture in SC during the Civil Rights Movement that has now been permanently placed on the Historic Vehicle Association's National Registry (19:23). Brian shares the history of B.R. Howard and Associates and its philosophy in the conservation industry (23:35). In the 1970s psychologist David Rosenhan sent healthy volunteers to 12 psychiatric hospitals, where they claimed to be hearing voices. Once they were admitted, they behaved normally, but the hospitals diagnosed all of them as seriously mentally ill. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the Rosenhan experiment, which challenged the validity of psychiatric diagnosis and set off a furor in the field. On this episode of MOVE, Andy Albright tells you why you need to use a "Ready, Fire, Aim" mentality when it comes to your career. How many times have you seen the Nike slogan, “Just Do It?” Three simple words. Yet, so many people don’t get it or DO it. One way I help people get things done is by showing them my “Ready, Fire, Aim” worksheet. What I share with people is that you need to get a project from conception to about 50 percent of what you think is complete and then seek input from people that know what you need to do to make it better or complete it. Don’t build the whole car or plane before you get feedback. That’s crazy. Now, I’m not saying sit there and talk about what you could do or what you should do either. Move. Take action. Just do it. Get started now. The “DO” or “action orientation” is the primary difference between high achievers and low achievers. Low achievers and non-achievers have good or great intentions. Many of you have heard the Randy Travis song “Good Intentions” that includes the line that goes “And I hear tell the road to hell is paved with good intentions … and mama my intentions were the best.” Well, intentions will only take you so far. You’ve got to move and get things done or your words fall short when it comes to being successful. Why wait to get started? Let’s go. There is something called the Law of Reversibility that deals with psychology and metaphysics. Did you know that you are more likely to ACT yourself into feeling a particular way than you are to FEEL yourself into acting? Act “as if” you are the person you desire to be! With the qualities and talents that you desire to have your actions will generate the feelings that go with them. TIP: Get advice = take action! Here is my advice: walk, talk, dress and behave like the people you hold in high regard or edify, and you will soon FEEL like the people you want to be like. You will treat other people the way LEADERS do. You will WORK like top performers and you will get results like successful people do. Many people like to say, “Fake it until you make it.” I would say, “Faith it until you make it.” Now, there will be issues, difficulties and challenges. Will you use those times as opportunities to get instruction and not let the challenges obstruct you? When you run into trouble that is the time to seek out training and help rather than shut down and give up. Oh yeah, these are times when you need God and prayer too. I want you to have an unshakable persistency that is THE model for others to follow. Do what former N.C. State basketball coach Jimmy Valvano said, “Never give up!” I see each potential obstacle or setback containing a seed that holds an equal or greater advantage or benefit to a person. But, you have to know it is in there and figure out how to get it grow and expand. Your job to stay focused.
